And you wonder why voters rejected the T-SPLOST

If you want to see a microcosm of the reason metro Atlanta voters didn’t trust our transportation planners enough to approve the $7.2 billion T-SPLOST tax, I recommend this news from the AJC:

The state Transportation Board is poised to declare the Downtown Connector a gateway to the state, and to help fund a makeover to pretty up some of the high-profile bridges that pass over it.

The first two are the Peachtree Street bridges that pass over the Connector and back, in Downtown and Midtown.

“This lets the traveling public know the city of Atlanta is the capital city,” said DOT board president Johnny Floyd. “We want to showcase it and make sure it looks good.”

The makeover, according to the Midtown Alliance, will include colored under-lighting for night time and the words “Peachtree Street” in lights, as well as sculptured fences and sidewalks on the surface level over the I-85/I-75 interchange.

The Department of Transportation’s board approved the expense on Thursday. DOT will put $1.7 million toward the $5 million project for two bridges. Three other bridges would follow later, said DOT board member Sam Wellborn.

Yes, this must be the best way to spend $5 million in transportation funding (the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District is to contribute some of the money). Just think how pretty Peachtree Street will look as motorists are stuck in traffic on or underneath it!

Now, before you say, “It’s only $5 million. How much traffic relief could we get for that kind of money?” — I have numbers.

The T-SPLOST list included mostly projects that cost millions, if not tens or hundreds of millions, of dollars. But it also included some less expensive projects, particularly in the city of Atlanta.

In fact, there were 14 Atlanta projects that each cost less than $1 million. For $5 million, we could complete the nine cheapest of these — including some projects in the Downtown/Midtown vicinity: improvements along 10th Street, 14th Street, Edgewood Avenue, North Avenue and others, with almost $275,000 to spare. Or we could see some other combination of projects adding up to $5 million.

Admittedly, I didn’t spend a lot of time examining these smaller-scale projects leading up to the July 31 referendum. I don’t know how much congestion relief we’d get from them. But if they made the cut to be on the list, they almost certainly would be more worthwhile than putting some street names in fancy lights on interstate overpasses.

Ah, but what about this line from the AJC story?

The DOT money comes from signs near highway exits that advertise businesses at upcoming rest stops. That money is dedicated to making “gateways” to the state attractive.

Shouldn’t that stipulation preclude the money from being spent on traffic improvements rather than sprucing up our roads? I dunno; ask me again after the state has stopped diverting other fee revenues from the purposes prescribed by the laws creating them.

In any case, I can think of few ways to make a state “gateway” more “attractive” than ensuring motorists can exit the Downtown Connector and actually get to where they’re going. That strikes me as a relevant and better use of the money.

A big part of the public distrust regarding the T-SPLOST was the idea that the state is already spending money as wisely as possible. This is one more episode that makes the skeptics say, “Told you so!”

I certainly agree that this money could be put to better use. Besides, there are 70000 Peachtree Streets in Atlanta. And I will certainly be glad to know that I am looking at one of them while I sit in traffic trying to get to work every day.

Right. Passing the T-SPLOST would have allowed for spending of transportation dollars on a more local basis than the current GDOT-driven system. Without it, we’re all at the mercy of GDOT and the entire state. But that’s water under the neon bridge.

As I stated on the other blog that had this story, I think that the capital building itself tells passers by that they are in a capital city rather than in some backwoods farm town (the skyscrapers, 18 lane highway, and traffic as far as you can see help too) a little more effectively than a sign that says what street you are underneath.
And by the way – didn’t the decorative fencing over 17th Street collapse into freaking traffic below last year?

Kyle,

Am I reading that last sentence correctly?”A big part of public distrust was the idea that the state is already spending money as wisely as possible.”

I thought the public thought the state spent money unwisely. That T-SPLOST just gave them justification to spend a lot more.

You meant the public thought the state couldn’t do any better even with T-SPLOST.

So these silly sign prove that T-SPLOST would have eliminated silliness and kept the spending sensible.

Guess I just don’t get it. The whole thing sounds like an amateurish DOT any way you put it. SPLAT, T- SPLOST or .SPUMONE

The transportation dept. has too much money–they’re tearing up every street and highway with no regard to traffic problems they cause. Their ruining business, especially this repaving on I-285 on weekends. You can use the highway and merchants in shops at Perimeter Mall must be feeling poorly these days. The money could be spent on the states other needs–like education or something. Anything but more asphalt.

By the way, these projects have been scaled back over the years…originally they (locals) wanted to cover the whole Interstate downtown because it was considered an “eyesore”. They never considered ventilation of the tunnels it would create. And the cost was way over $5M.

I’m a conservative but it’s these kind of short-sighted vision-less opinion pieces which cause me to part company with many of the conservatives of this region. Atlanta and Georgia are in competition with other states and cities. There is a general trend in the country where business and population would like to locate to cities if possible. This is due to young people preferring to live in the city to a degree that didn’t exist for the generation before, and it’s due to the middle-aged and older people increasingly wanting to be near amenities they can easily get to once the kids are out of the house. The suburbs are just not as appealing as they used to be. It is farsighted for things to be spruced up in Atlanta and I think it’s actually great that the state of Georgia shows some interest in doing so. It is not a waste of money. It will make both Atlanta and Georgia a more attractive place for both potential future residents and businesses who are trying to determine which parts of the country to locate in.

Tiberius – . If you think the state is just approving charter schools and walking away, you are very wrong (again).

Here’s a link to HB 797, assuming you’re interested in facts, not your just your opinion of things:

http://www1.legis.ga.gov/legis/2011_12/pdf/hb797.pdf

a few points in the legislation about the new charter school commission’s duties, etc. (question marks added):

-Conduct facility and curriculum reviews of state charter schools
-Approve or deny petitions for state charter schools and renew, nonrenew, or terminate state charter school petitions
-The commission shall ensure that each state charter school participates in the state’s education accountability system (?)
-Develop, promote, and disseminate best practices (?) for state charter schools
-Monitor and annually review and evaluate the academic and financial performance, including revenues and expenditures
-Review and recommend to the General Assembly any necessary revisions to statutory requirements regarding standards (?) and accountability for state charter schools
-If a charter for a state charter school is not renewed or is terminated, the state charter school shall be responsible for all debts of such school. Neither the state, the State Board of Education, or the commission shall be liable for any debts of the school in the event the charter is not renewed or is terminated.

The last point was smart – it will encourage compliance to the state in order to keep the charter active.

After all, those Democrats did vote him into office and should demand that the president not drive the country over the fiscal cliff while waving bandaids at poor people who think they are getting healthcare. National bankruptcy is a lot worse than a few frivalous neon signs.

Why not use native Red Maples? Dogwoods are one of the prettiest trees but in their natural habitat, they grow in the shade, They’re an understory tree and don’t do as well in the sun, especially in times of drought, which come pretty regularly.

You were so keen on liberating the people of Iraq, and in favor of that war. Now you cry about the national debt. That war cost the US at least a trillion dollar. Did we have the money? NO, we were already about 6 trillion dollars in debt. So how about paying that trillion first, it is long overdue. How about raising taxes to get a trillion dollars and use that to reduce the debt, with the understanding that it is paying back the money spent on Iraq. Would that not be a good first step? Surely you would agree with that.

The dogwoods here have suffered some but they do their “thing”in the spring. Even the crepe myrtles have presented some royal golds in their departing leaves. I must mention my camellias which are blooming in rose, red, pink with white to come. Some blossoms arealmost three and four inches across. This fall has outdone itself with color.

I think that it was in March of this year when Obama passed Bush in indebting the U. S. In other words, Obama had added more to the national debt in three years and three months than Bush did in eight years! That is quite an accomplishment, and one in which liberals seem to delight.

The liberals defense of Obama’s spending is always, “Well, Bush fought two unfunded wars and drove the debt up!” That truly is not a defense but rather a deflection.

Anyone with “walking around sense” knows where this spending is going, and how it will end. My only prayer is that the liberals suffer the most when their president finally brings this country down.

So now we get to the nitty gritty. President Obama should be able to keep raising the debt because President Bush went to war protecting our country. (Info was given to Bush & Congress by the two greatest intel organizations in the world.who said there were wmds.) As negative as that seems to you even after 9/11, President Obama has followed the plans of President Bush, no matter that he said he would not. But,oh, the expensive tryouts Obama has manufactured himself! Wow!

President Obama has pushed a failing “stimulus”, then healthcare//insurance for one of the largest countries in the world which will be far more expensive than any wars. If everybody in the country paid the rates of rich people , we would still NOT be out of debt.

I know you don’t believe it. Find your own facts, not published in liberal quarters. Might give you some thoughts other than” you did not express that correctly”.

That war cost money. That money has to be paid back, just like any other loan. So I am asking you if you agree to paying that money back by raising taxes.

I think this is a great idea. Every city needs to have a “gateway” entrance. I think once all of the scheduled bridges are done it will really help the image of the Connector.

What I would really like though is to use that money to put tolls entering from outside of I-285 on the northern parts of I-75 and I-85. That money could be used strictly for MARTA. Now when you leave the city you wouldn’t have to pay anything, only when you are coming in. Since the OTPers hate ATL so much let them stay where they are and when they come for the ITP jobs and entertainment they will pay to support our transit here, since they are too dumb to join.

Cuts and economic measures are the only way to decrease expenditures and lower the debt. The President is doing neither and Democrats in the Senate are blocking any moves in Congress. I have neither time nor desire to debate anything with someone, who is incapable of keeping track of what the argument is about, namely you. (I am making an exception for Dusty, who is quite notorious in this, out of shear goodness of heart, but do not extend it to others.).

The point of my response to Dusty regarding the increase in national debt during the Obama administration, which she blamed the President for, was that President Obama had to deal with an enormous financial and economic crisis, which he inherited, and which required huge spending to mitigate. I did not write anything about blame. Therefore, when you wrote your “– interpretation — It’s all George Bush’s fault!,” it was not only beside the point, it was plain stupid. And that continued in your other comments, trying to extend the blame game to all kinds of other people, who are not President Obama, and introducing all kinds of other, irrelevant subjects. I could not care less about your opinion about who was responsible for the recession, except that there are analyses different from yours, but have no intention to rehash that subject.

Obama’s lawsuit was one element of a national “anti-redlining” campaign led by Chicago’s progressive groups, who argued that banks unfairly refused to lend money to people living within so-called “redlines” around African-American communities. The campaign was powered by progressives’ moral claim that their expertise could boost home ownership among the United States’ most disadvantaged minority, African-Americans.

President George W. Bush warned the Democratic Congress 17 times in 2008 alone about the systemic consequences of financial turmoil at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and also put forward thoughtful plans to reduce the risk that either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac would encounter such difficulties.

Unfortunately, these warnings went unheeded, as the President’s repeated attempts to reform the supervision of these entities were thwarted by the legislative maneuvering of those who emphatically denied there were problems.

To this day Barack Obama blames Bush for the 2008 economic meltdown.
The truth is, it was Obama not Bush who destroyed the economy.

Nearly a dozen top United States companies plan to start laying off hundreds of employees with the implementation of Obamacare, according to the non-profit political action group FreedomWorks.

FreedomWorks compiled the list, reported in Friday’s Washington Times, from statements made by the firms since President Barack Obama’s healthcare mandate was passed.

The firms include:

Welch Allyn — a manufacturer of medical diagnostic equipment in central New York — which says it will cut 275 employees, about 10 percent of its workforce, over the next three years.

Dana Holding Corp. — a global auto parts manufacturing company — which warned of layoffs due “$24 million over the next six years in additional U.S. healthcare expenses.’’

Stryker — a medical device manufacturer — which plans to close its facility in Orchard Park, N.Y., eliminating 96 jobs in December. They also say they’ll slash 5 percent of their global workforce, about 1,170 positions.

Boston Scientific — a medical device manufacturer — said it plans to cut between 1,200 and 1,400 jobs, while shifting investments and workers overseas to China.

Medtronic — a medical device maker — which cut 500 positions over the summer, with 500 more set to be eliminated by the end of 2013.

“To cons like you, saying the US is not “blessed by God” and perfect is close to treason.”

That is certainly not the case now, else Obama would not be your president.

“I’m sure you think we did just great in Iraq and should probably invade Iran.”

I will hate to see us when we have to deal with Iran. The only knowledge Obama has of war is what he learned on the streets of Chicago as a community organizer. Taking on Iran would be far more responsibility than he can handle because he must always have a “fall guy” in case things don’t work out. Well, seems we have a devoted group here, all reading from the same script. The president is tres beau and blameless. Indeed, he is making wonderful trips abroad and may possibly return home if necessary..

Now that President Obama will soon leave the wonderful countries vital to our enhancement, i.e.Thailand, Cambodia and Myamar (aka Burma). we can celebrate this great achievement and wait for more. There’s always Andorra, Grenada and Liechtenstein to vist and check on our all important links to these countries.

Indeed how charming it was to see the president in his sock feet in the Buddhist temple with Hillary trailing along behind (no leash) and spreading more good will than Santa Claus.

He even frowned a bit over Myamar’s ethnic suppression and the home- jailing of their leading lady politician for years.. Yes, mam. we don’t think that is nice. Otherwise, throw a kiss for the king of one and the sinking dictators of others. Ah what joy for our traveler.

My last post concerned the importance of said countries to the USA. The importance of Thailand, Cambodia and Myamar seems as little as that of the smallest countries in the world Andorra, Grenada and Liechtenstein. The was the point you wished to ignore.

Tthe president could spend another week visiting countries of little importance. You would still avoid speaking of the president’s unimportant travel and avoid that subject entirely. While Gaza burns and rocket bombs, Israel fights back, Europe’s finances wobble and the USA is debt ridden, the president had rather do some traveling. You, in the meantime, try to demean anyone who mention the ineffectiveness of the president.

Continue your hero worshiip. I will continue to consider the dilemmas that face this country. But not the president. Seems he had rather travel.

Please judge your own education instead of mine. Your evaluation is prejudiced. political.and uninformed.

No matter how you like to support the president’s every move, the importance of trade with any country besides China is of less importance than issues in the USA. You can support other countries from home but it is not as much fun as traveling, bowing & scraping, and letting someone else handle mammoth problems at home. .

Dusty,

I do not “try to demean anyone who mentions the ineffectiveness of the president. “ Also, I do not have “intolerance of anyone who does not share” my “impenetrable political opinion.” Also, I have a rather high tolerance for people trying to demean me.

I do have intolerance for statements that demean the elected president of this country on the basis of ignorance, false accusations and lies. You recent sarcastic comment about countries fell into the first category and you just dug yourself deeper when you tried to defend it instead of admitting your error. What is truly demeaning, and it is more to the writer than to the President, is to call President’s official visits “some travelling.”

I could have mentioned other factors, such as that foreign travel like that is arranged long before it happens, the events in Israel and Gaza happened very recently, and all that the President can do about them can be done from the board of Air Force One. As for Europe’s finances and US debt, I seriously doubt that the few days of President’s travel will make any difference.

If I wanted to characterize your post @ 9:23 pm by one word, “petty” comes to mind. I am sure you could do better.

LLB was cut as an armchair qb. He could not even do that.

You have epitomized your own characteristics. Rude, blind and conceited.

You refuse to see any fault with the president as he goes into his second term with a failing first term behind him. You give the impression that everything is fine. Imagine!!

You perform like a trained seal who jumps for Democrats and I can’t understand it. Do you ever read the news?

Reflect on my education all you want. I fear for your mind when I read your comments.. .

Dusty,

Your post might have a smidgen of persuasiveness if you have bothered to support it with any evidence. But that is what you never do.

I was rude? Where?

“You refuse to see any fault with the president …”

How do you know that? Are you a mind reader?

“perform like a trained seal who jumps for Democrats?”

Again, where do you get these brilliant pieces of knowledge? “

”I can’t understand it.”

Now, this is where I agree. Not understanding definitely seems your forte.

“Do you ever read the news? “

Probably more than you do, considering your posts.

“Reflect on my education all you want.”

Oh, I have no desire to do that. I have seen the results.

Kyle,

It is your blog, and you can make such a decision, but frankly, I find it puzzling. This is an old blog, most comments are off the subject anyway. And you can hardy accuse either of us of being terribly rude, insulting, or anything like that, compared with other posts you keep allowing. If you paid any attention, you would have found that my exchanges with Dusty, and vice versa, while clearly from very opposite sides, are actually on a fairly friendly basis, and while I can speak only for myself, I do care about what Dusty thinks. We do not hesitate to be cutting, but within limits, limits that are being crossed much more by others.

And while I am writing this, I have question for you. Would you please define what you call “gratuitous name-calling ,“ and explain why, for instance, calling the democratically elected President “Obozo,” or calling a university student Sandra Fluke “a parasitic slut,” do not qualify?

Funny you should direct your bile and hatred in my direction, Glenn, when it is your buddy JamVet who attacked a Marine on this blog simply because he didn’t support Dear Leader.

Grow up, MarkV. Your whining about my calling Obozo “Obozo” reveals a skin so thin that it makes me wonder what the next step would be for you. Shall we arrest and jail someone for calling Obozo “Obozo”? I think you and your ilk are coming quite close to proposing such things.

If you can’t handle such blasphemy, perhaps a political blog is not the place for you.

MarkV: I asked you and Dusty to knock it off because your exchange was pointless. You’re not even arguing about anything anymore.

As for your question, see rule No. 2. And let’s not pretend that Sandra Fluke is a mere “university student” at this point — she was a primetime speaker at the DNC this year, among other things. I think she qualifies as a public figure at this point. (Which is not to say I agree with the referenced characterization of her.)

Did you serve in anything besides the church or school choir?

Since I do not know Jamvet, quit being the known liar you love to be.

Jam and the blogger he was responding to seemed to handle their own situation.

I do not nor have I ever spoke for him or said I did.

If you can’t handle the election results maybe a political blog is not the place for you.

Is there a reason you haven’t mentioned President Romney in a few weeks? It seemed to be prevalent in your posts not so long ago.

Kyle,

I disagree with your opinion that my exchanges with Dusty were “pointless,” and that we were “ not even arguing about anything anymore.” I find your judgment very selective, considering many other exchanges you have had no problems with.

As for Sandra Fluke, I asked my question exactly because she qualified as a public figure, and with full knowledge of your rule #2, which refers to name calling of public figures and your right “to take down comments that include gratuitous name-calling about anyone.“ The fact that you find calling ANYONE without justification ”a parasitic slut” something not requiring action speaks for itself and of your standards.

Hopefully you will be alright. I know the crying as been unstoppable, but get a grip.

Romney was a weak candidate; just listen to some of the Republicans who just want him to STFU already and go away.

Your crying and moaning only shows that you are unable to deal with conflict and come to resolution on issues. That is not good for business.

Be a man for a change. Well I am assuming that you are a man. Either way, be an adult and accept defeat.

Same here but still working hard. Went straight to military after high school. Got out after 6 yrs; worked and went to college. Worked for major corporation for a number of years and now own a small consulting business.

It is funny to read where people like you talk about the left as moochers as if the right doesn’t have any.

I’m nothing special, but my income would probably surprise you. You know for someone, like me that you love to throw narrow minded, ignorant insults at and claim “hates” the military that I served in.

You seem to get too emotional over politics. I have my leanings but never allow it to get in the way of good family, friend and business relationships.
