Dear people signing secessionist petitions . . .

Stop. Just stop.

If you haven’t heard, a number of pro-secession petitions have cropped up on the White House website’s page for public petitions. When I checked earlier today, there were petitions for “peaceful withdrawal” from the U.S. by 20 states. Not all of them went for Mitt Romney last week, or are in the South: There were also petitions for such states as Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Oregon.

It should go without saying that these petitions a) aren’t going to lead to any kind of action and b) aren’t supported by the vast majority of people who voted against President Obama. If you could cross-check the two groups, I suspect there would be a lot of overlap between the petition signers and birthers.

To those who are signing these petitions out of a sense of anger or exasperation or desperation, let me say this:

Maybe you believe all hope is lost now that we’re getting four more years of Obama. There are a lot of possibilities for his second term that I’m not happy about, either. Quite the opposite, as should be clear from pretty much everything I’ve written on this blog.

But the election, while not all that close in terms of the margin in the Electoral College, was rather close to producing a different outcome. By the count of National Review’s Jim Geraghty, Romney fell short by a combined 407,000 votes in four states that, had he won them, could have pushed him to 275 electoral votes and the White House. I point this out not to engage in wishful “what ifs,” just to observe that it was very much possible to have gotten an outcome that would have had the left in a fit of apoplexy instead.

And when the nation is that closely divided, the conclusion in my view is not to decide it actually needs to divide in two. Rather, it’s that it wouldn’t take much next time to earn a more amenable outcome.

To do that, Republicans have to make some necessary but hardly revolutionary changes. But it does not help them do that when there are people signing petitions that confirm the worst stereotypes the left can dredge up about the right. Let’s face it: In light of the need to appeal to a wider swath of the electorate, comparisons to the Civil War do not aid the cause.

So, please: Find another outlet for whatever energy you’re expending on this kind of junk.

NOTE: The comments thread on this post has long since devolved into mostly personal attacks, so I’m shutting it down. A new post will be up soon, and a number of you may be facing some time away from the blog. I’m not sure yet which will happen first.

If folks want to sign petitions, that’s their right. It’s really nothing to get excited about.

As for the country being divided, it’s always been divided. The only time it was ever united for any period of time was WWII. That’s not apt to change.

Mitt Romney lost in a close election. Whoever you voted for, the election is over and now is the time to stop the endless bickering and complaining about who did what to whom during the runup to the election. The far right nor the far left represents most Americans. Don’t draw lines in the sand and not expect to have someone step over that line. There is room for all viewpoints and compromise should not be a curse word for either party.

Romney got fewer votes than McCain did. And this in a year with a highly vulnerable incumbent. It has literally been a generation since a Republican won the popular vote by more than the 2.5%-3% that Obama will have won by in 2012 when all the votes are counted. Republicans have lost 5 out of the last 6 popular votes. I hope you cons continue to think that it was a close election and that with just a little luck here or there you would have had it, because by believing that you’re much more likely to stay the same course. And the longer the fringe lunatics control your party as they do now, the longer Democrats will find themselves in the White House.

Articles of Impeachment is what we should be drawing up.

Now let us play out that fantasy.
1) Republican controlled House votes to impeach
2) Democrat controlled Senate finds there is nothing to impeach

Yes that is definitely the single most important issue the country faces right now. 2 out of 3 branches of the federal government have nothing better to do.

Just wish people could/would view the President as the mostly-centrist politician he is and not the America-destroying (choose your derogatory adjective) portrayed by the right. If you think liberals are all in, in regards to Obama, you would be quite wrong. Romney’s positions came very close to Obama’s toward the end of the campaign. Obama, thus, must not be near the socialist ogre he is portrayed as. I had said all along that if W Bush deserved two terms, Obama did by a longshot. Fair-minded americans must have felt so as well. That 400,000 or so votes does seem small considering Romney reportedly got 2 million less votes that McCain. That’s pretty amazing.

A couple of points:

While I believe that it is inevitable the the U.S. breaks up into separate countries eventually, the time is not now. We’ll survive Obama, even if he will put us on an irreparable course towards a breakup that will happen in about 50 years or so

Traitors are Presidents who go to bed while their ambassador is pleading for rescue.

If this is true (and I’m not vouching for the veracity of this site’s reporting), this is VERY disturbing. The explanation right now is that over voting is due to two ballot “cards” being available and some voters didn’t vote on both. Not impossible, but not likely, either:

I actually really like the fact that the polls tightened up somewhat after the first debate. Up until then conservatives were about to dump Romney and begin putting more money into Senate races. But instead they got their hopes up and believed the “skewed” polls were underestimating Romney’s chances. They began to really think he was going to win. It wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun to watch them fall apart and wilt into hysterics if they hadn’t gotten their hopes up so much. But that’s what happens when you live in a fantasy world. That fantasy world came crashing down when reality smacked them in the face last Tuesday.

And white married couples over 30 years of age voted for Romney. Not much else matters. A president who was elected and re-elected through identity politics has brought about a state of affairs where demographic voting determines the outcome. Obama actually had more raw votes than any candidate in history except for one- his own vote count in 2008. If you want to continue believing this was a close election then go ahead and keep living your delusion. It was an electoral college drubbing and the popular vote margin was wider than any Republican victory in a generation.

I’ve been writing about this for about a decade or so as our country becomes more divided along hyphenated-Americans rather than the melting pot we used to be. We have also become more dependent on government to solve out problems; a trend that has grown steadily since FDR, but accelerated since LBJ. “Sooner or later, well or badly, that majority’s demand for representation will be filled. Whereas in 1968 Governor George Wallace’s taunt “there ain’t a dime’s worth of difference” between the Republican and Democratic parties resonated with only 13.5 percent of the American people, in 1992 Ross Perot became a serious contender for the presidency (at one point he was favored by 39 percent of Americans vs. 31 percent for G.H.W. Bush and 25 percent for Clinton) simply by speaking ill of the ruling class. Today, few speak well of the ruling class. Not only has it burgeoned in size and pretense, but it also has undertaken wars it has not won, presided over a declining economy and mushrooming debt, made life more expensive, raised taxes, and talked down to the American people. Americans’ conviction that the ruling class is as hostile as it is incompetent has solidified. The polls tell us that only about a fifth of Americans trust the government to do the right thing. The rest expect that it will do more harm than good and are no longer afraid to say so.

While Europeans are accustomed to being ruled by presumed betters whom they distrust, the American people’s realization of being ruled like Europeans shocked this country into well nigh revolutionary attitudes. But only the realization was new. The ruling class had sunk deep roots in America over decades before 2008. Machiavelli compares serious political diseases to the Aetolian fevers — easy to treat early on while they are difficult to discern, but virtually untreatable by the time they become obvious.”

If one really wanted to parse numbers, a good place to start would be the elections for the US House, where Democrats actually received more votes than did Republicans but still trail in members to congress, i.e. the people’s house, thanks to Republican gerrymandering. 2010 was a bad election to not show up for. Please note, I’m not saying Democrats don’t also gerrymander.

ROFLMAO!! Ha!! No trooper, a bold spirit of NEVER AGAIN, won the election for Obama. Nothing more, nothing less. One of metro Atlanta’s tride and true red counties is now BLUE. I will leave it up to you to figure out which one. The people who stood in line for 2,3,4 HOURS did so willingly with the chant playing in their heads, NEVER AGAIN!

Regardless of endless attempts of FLAs governor to disenfranchise its voters especially in specific geographic areas, they stood in lines winding up the road 6,7,8 hours…some even voting as late as 1 and 2 am… they sang in their heads NEVER AGAIN!

In Cleveland… and Philadelphia both ground zero for voter suppression of minorities they braved ridiculous lines and did so with RESOLVE, only two words repeated themselves over and over in their heads – NEVER AGAIN.

All those young people and WOMEN who realized that the clock was attempted to be turned back on them as far as their issues braved the sport that was voting – NEVER AGAIN!

If you want to go on believing that people voted for Obama and helped him win, simply because he was Black, giving away “stuff”, “cool”, “great orator” or whatever, go on believin’! I am here to tell you a whole mess of us in this country REFUSE to go back to the days of old, where only certain groups of people called the shots and controlled everyone else’s destiny. NEVER again. Call it the “truly pissed off vote”!

Aquagirl, your reading comprehension skills are as lacking as usual.

I never said Republicans were the reasonable ones. In fact, I stated clearly that both sides have equal shares of unreasonable people in them. My assertion is that it is the Democrats who consider themselves reasonable, when they are just as guilty as the Republicans.

Pay attention to what people write, not what you think they will write, OK?

And Obama DID pay off his union buddies with stimulus and bailout money. Bailed out GM with Federals funds (yet to be paid back), payed off his teachers unions with Stimulus funds (never to be paid back), paid off his auto unions again with Cash for Clunkers. Paid them off up and down the line, Aquagirl. Sorry those facts elude you.

The majority of these offices are held by reform Republicans who were elected on the pro-growth GOP platform on spending and taxes. Voters are clearly open to that message, if delivered competently. ”

Among other things that were up for vote last week:

“1. Republicans retained control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
2. Voters in Alabama, Montana, and Wyoming all passed measures limiting Obamacare.
3. Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, one of the conservative movement’s brightest rising stars, overcame establishment GOP opposition to clinch a U.S. Senate victory in Texas.
4. Corruptocrat Beltway barnacle Rep. Pete Stark was finally kicked out of office in California.
5. Despite entrenched teachers’ union opposition, a charter school initiative in Washington state triumphed.
6. Despite entrenched Big Labor support, a radical collective bargaining power grab in Michigan failed.
7. Oklahoma voters said no to government race-based preferences in college admissions, public contracting, and government hiring.
8. Montana voters said no to boundless benefits for illegal aliens.
9. Washington state approved taxpayer-empowering limitations on its state legislature’s ability to raise taxes.
10. For the first time since Reconstruction, the GOP won control of the Arkansas state house.
11. Voters rejected tax hike ballot measures in Arizona, South Dakota, and Missouri.
12. Louisiana voted to protect gun rights.
13. Kentucky voted to protect hunting and fishing rights.
14. Parental notification for minors’ abortion prevailed in Montana.
15. North Carolina Republicans claimed the governor’s office, congressional gains, and control of the state’s general assembly.
16. Paul Ryan will return to Congress after winning re-election and continue to carry the torch for entitlement reform and budget discipline.
17. Conservatives won big victories in the Kansas state legislature.
18. Republicans won historic supermajorities in Tennessee.
19.Across the country, Republicans reached a post-2000 record number of gubernatorial victories.
20. Conservatives who were devastated by the national election results demonstrated how to lose with dignity and grace.”

Glenn Beck and md, as I posted before (when I posted the original link), I had my doubts about the explanation from the elections supervisor’s statement.

There may be a way to set up the ballots as two different cards for counting (her explanation), but it is grossly inefficient and certainly confusing, especially given the results. There is also some question about recounting CERTAIN early votes (not all – what is it with these Democrats who don’t believe in equal protection anyway), but not recounting ALL of them, especially given the huge swing in vote totals as a result.

The story needs to play out further, but there are some interesting cautionary tales out there in OH and FL that needs to be investigated fully.

I posted this earlier on Galloway’s blog on this subject:

Bit of history: Georgia was not readmitted to Congress of the “One Nation” after losing the War Between the States until June of 1869 but was kicked out in December of the same year. It finally acknowledged reconstruction in July of 1870 and was readmitted again. The United States government has never recognized the right of states to secede, and considers the states to never have left the union during the war. So the President’s answer would be the same today, “You can’t.”

And while you’re thinking about it, what about saying good bye to Kings Bay, Robins, Dobbins, Fort Benning. Also, most of the corporate headquarters located in Georgia, the Braves, Falcons, and Hawks. Finally, try to balance a budget (as the State Constitution requires) with pecans and peanuts (you ain’t got no money).

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

“Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”

“Society will develop a new kind of servitude which covers the surface of society with a network of complicated rules, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate. It does not tyrannise but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.”

“It is indeed difficult to imagine how men who have entirely renounced the habit of managing their own affairs could be successful in choosing those who ought to lead them. It is impossible to believe that a liberal, energetic, and wise government can ever emerge from the ballots of a nation of servants.”

note* – turnout percentages will show over 100% due to a two page ballot. the tabulation system (GEMS) provides voter turnout as equal to the total cards cast in the election divided by the number of registered voters. also note that some voters chose not to return by mail the second card containing the amendments.

It’s on the front page of this site:

Seriously? Like others have said, if people want to sign a petition, let them! You are telling people to stand idly by while everything they believe in is being ripped from their hands. It is our job as American people, being founded on Judeo-Christian values to stand for the morals we believe in. America hardly has morals and standards anymore. People can say all they want about being for abortion and homosexual marriages (and neither are sanctioned by our Creator) but can those people actually live what they say? I can’t see why people believe that things like homosexuality and abortion and even premarital relations are OK when there are natural consequences for those things! I don’t believe that these states REALLY want to secede from the union. We are beyond blessed to live in a nation with so many freedoms that other nations don’t have. If someone wants to sign a petition (doing what they feel is right) that probably won’t even get the chance to be considered seriously, don’t try to deny them that right. This government needs a little shake and a wake-up call. We gotta start somewhere.

It is the consensus of the media, even Fox and Boortz, the the Republican party is too old, too white and too male. I’d add too fat and too prejudice. They can still block any and all legislation because of the super majority in the Senate they drove through. So we’ll have 4 more years of Mitch. Only he can’t say one term anymore. He’ll have to say not on my watch. So the fiscal cliff will happen and the Republicans will get what they want. A depression. Then they’ll try to impeach. Unless rational people stop them. What’s the next step from here? That step is the final realization by the American Public that their government is controlled by corporations and that these corporations do not act in the public interest but in their own selfish interests. And that the only way their lives will improve is breaking the cycle of corporate ownership of government.

Hillbilly D: The secession members of Congress withdrew (walked out) and started an armed rebellion. Therefore those state’s representatives and senators had to be readmitted to Congress. Lincoln was determined that they should be allowed to return once they laid down their arms and consented to the laws of the land (including those passed while they were away) and that was the reason for the delay between the war’s end and Georgia’s representatives and senators being readmitted.

Fred-
as you probably know, to be informed implies that information is received, evaluated, and then assimilated by the informed. Unfortunately there are those who are unable to distinguish accurate information from erroneous made up drivel, and when given the choice, invariably choose the drivel every time. They then call themselves and their opinions “informed”, oblivious to the fact that they are actually misinformed. The weird thing is that even when confronted with solid undeniable evidence of their mistaken beliefs, their nuclear proof Cryberian Bubble of Self Delusion prevents even the slightest bit of that evidence from penetrating their wooden noggins intact. Even weirder, the C.B.S.D. somehow actually transmogrifies that evidence into further “proof” that they were right all along.

In other words, unless your fingers need the exercise from typing, or if like me, you find it to be mildly amusing to play here at the kiddie pool, you are only wasting electrons on a mission of futility. But then, you already knew that, didn’t you?

Detroiters Elect Ex-Con Brian Banks As State Rep

“Among the new group of state lawmakers to emerge from Election Day on Tuesday is Brian Banks, who has been convicted eight times for felonies involving bad checks and credit card fraud.

Banks, a Democrat and lifelong Detroiter, won a seat in Lansing as a state representative for the 1st District, representing the east side of Detroit, Harper Woods, and the tony Grosse Pointes. He won 68 percent of the vote to Republican Dan Schulte’s 32 percent.

Banks, 35, was convicted eight times between 1998 and 2004 of writing bad checks and credit card fraud.”

His excuse after the election was that while he didn’t mention it on the air last Tuesday, he had a “bad feeling” when he woke up that Romney would lose and it was God telling him that.

In this country we have hosts and parasites. Throughout all of these states there are both hosts and parasites as we all live next door to each other. The problem is that the Federal and state governments create the relationship whereby the parasites are able to feed off the hosts. The government does the stealing of resources from the hosts so that the parasites don’t have to get their hands dirty. And by parasites I am referring to everyone who gets their paycheck via the actions of the government. That not only includes those who receive a direct check straight out of the bank accounts of the productive, but also those whose companies have government contracts, work for the government, etc. In a truly free society, all income would have to be earned through voluntary exchange of goods/services for money – or through charitable (voluntary) giving.

If you are not prepared to end this relationship with your fellow citizens and cast your lot into the free marketplace, then there is no point in signing a secession petition. It is the perpetuation of this relationship that has destroyed this country, and freedom from the oppressive regime in Washington (whether run by republicans or democrats – or both) will not be gained by recreating it again at the state level.

Seceed from the idea that it is government’s place to tell others how to live their lives, spend their money, run their business, what to put into their bodies, what to do with their bodies or their property, so long as they are not hurting anyone or violating anyone else’s rights.

We can have freedom once again in this country if everyone would reject the idea that government exists to do everything to everyone else that you would not be allowed to do on your own. We only need to seceed from that tragically well-ingrained idea.

There’s an article on Politico that details the partisan hackery undertaken by the fair and balanced Fox “News” and MSNBC leading up to the election. In the 8 weeks leading up to last Tuesday Fox “News” made 8 negative mentions for Obama for every positive mention. They report, I decide…..umm…..Obama is bad? Gosh I sure am glad they do thinking for me because I’m an just an American mushroom.

BUT…….and a big but at that…..the Fox hackery paled in comparison to that engaged in by flaming libs over at MSNBC. They laid waste to Fox with 32 negative mentions about Romney for every positive mention. That had to be a tiring process, digging that much mud, they must be all tuckered out. I should have watched because then I would have known Romney is bad, really bad, much worse than Obama bad. Thanks for deciding for me MSNBC, it saves me the trouble of trying to think for myself.

Hi Kyle –

Given all the absurd and nasty things extreme conservatives have said and done in the last few months, these petitions seem a bit of harmless fun to me. Disappointed and frustrated people are blowing off steam, why make a big deal of it? In terms of getting anything accomplished, sure it’s a waste of time, since the President does not have the power to grant secession.

Serious secessionists would do best to press for a constitutional amendment creating a detailed secession process. The Texas vs. White SCOTUS case seemed to deny that secession was even possible and see also the remarks of jconservative at 6:04 pm regarding Justice Scalia’s more recent thoughts on the subject, which appear to echo the same sentiment.

“No you read the first page of a 170 page document and jumped to a conclusion that is false. Out of a 170 page document you picked the only two pages that don’t provide official results.”

Actually, I was going off the comment made by the supervisor of elections where she herself stated she had never seen anything like that in prior elections. And yes, there is some confusion in terminology with number of voters and cards cast, which is also screwy because even with a 2 page ballot the numbers do not add up. And I also qualified the entire post when I made it by stating it may or may not be anything at all.

After READING further on the subject though, one would be able to see the mess that it really is as the 2 different recounts have produced two different tallies and there are votes that suddenly just appeared out of nowhere.

So I stand by my original post that something very well may be fishy…..

Hi again Kyle – Do you moderate your board at all? Of 9 pages, maybe two are on topic, probably less.

Anyway, back on topic, my b/f once read the ENTIRE constitution, every word of it, with an eye to what it had to say about secession. He says it doesn’t address the matter at all. That puts the issue firmly in the hands of SCOTUS (see my earlier post), although the Congress of the US could override their ’secession is impossible’ ideas by passing a constitutional amendment subject to ratification by the states. Who is left out of this equation? The executive branch. Therefore secession petitions to Obama are pointless.

In each election, people do not get who they want, you just cannot stop playing because you was unable to get what you wanted. Disappointment is a part of life, just like paying taxes (for some). People will have to change the old outlook on how we are divided in the first place. Georgia is halfway dead with bad housing, little or no healthcare, furlough days for teachers, 400+Million speed sign on 285, no transportation, and other bad financial decisions. Georgia had the worst economic disasters and the Government makes very bad decision. Georgia could not stand alone because everyone would move out of the state.

Those who have worked hard, saved their money for their future, have medical insurance and I might add, pay high premiums for it out of their own pocket are now going to be taxed at a higher rate. It’s about the economy. There are no jobs. Thanks to Bill Clinton who signed the NAFTA agreement, all the jobs were sent to other countries. Yes, this country is divided. Beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Dr. Sowell said it best:

Most of Obama’s arguments were rotten, if you bothered to put them under scrutiny. But someone once said that it is amazing how long the rotten can hold together, if you don’t handle it roughly.

[snip]

On election night, the rotten held together because Mitt Romney had not handled it roughly with specifics. Romney was too nice to handle Obama’s absurdities roughly. He definitely out-niced Obama— as John McCain had out-niced Obama in 2008, and as Dewey out-niced Truman back in 1948.

[snip]

In this year’s first presidential debate, Obama out-niced Romney. But, when he lost out doing that, he then reversed himself, became the attacker, and ultimately the winner on election night, despite a track record that should have buried him in a landslide.

http://www.creators.com/opinion/thomas-sowell/nice-losers.html

Take Fred, for instance. He wants the freedom to attack but then cries “foul” when conservatives respond in kind. Fred even creates attacks where there are none.

Even after suffering a resounding loss, Republicans still don’t get it. Mitch McConnell and others vow to continue the fight against the president, and others yet point fingers outward instead of acknowledging that their party has much internal work to do.

Instead of wanting our country’s president to fail, it’s time they want him to succeed and that they join him in the work for the good of our country. Step away from the microphones; stop the gratuitous ranting and realize that the Republican path is out of touch with the cross-section of Americans.

It’s time to stop the name-calling of the First Family; stop the racial hatred, the negativity, the fight. It’s time Republicans again respect the office of the president and this man–Barack Obama–who is the president of these our United States.

It is incumbent upon Republicans to work with the president, not continue to fight against him. Isn’t it time?

It usually is many years after a President has left office before historians and pundits can fairly access his performance.

But, YOU already know Obama is a bad President.

The War of Northern Agression was much more than about slavery.

When Obama is introduced, the speaker states – the President of the United States. Read that again – of the United States – not the president of the Federal Government.

Our history is full of progressive moves that take away more and more liberty from the States in favor of Statism which can only be defined as a form of Socialism.

Our citizens are misguided, are historically illeterate and value the warm federal government blanket over their liberty.

Signing petitions is a guranteed freedom. But, you can bet the farm the Obama administration is searching each name for ties to militia groups, etc.

Instead of belittling secession petition signers, there needs to be a thorough look at why they sign.

We have for the first time in our history a president elected on popularity and socialism as there is no way a politically sane person would vote for the guy.

We are in big trouble. Yea, he will be gone in four more, but there are some things that once out of the box can’t be fixed.

@Repubs
Maybe you should give your advice to President Obama and Biden, Reid and Schumer. Quit the name calling and denigration. Act like you represent all the people, not just one wing of one party. Its incumbent upon the president to work with Congress, not just sit back and try to blame all of his troubles on them and cast aspersions on any who don’t agree with his approach.

Obama’s approach is to say, “I want to work with the Republicans. They are low life scum trying to steal from the poor and give to the rich who want to see America fail, but I’m willing to work with them if they vote for everything I propose. I’ll even let them in the photograph when I sign MY bill.”

Don’t despair yet wingnuts; there’s worse to come. And, it’ll keep coming for a long time.

You are the reason that the remains of the Republican party- once a national party- can’t nominate a candidate who can win a national election. The republicans will have to do something about you before they can hope to elect a president. Or control the senate. For the foreseeable future, the only thing they will continue to win a majority of are gerrymandered house seats.

You, the secessionists, the birthers, the tea partiers, those who scream “socialist” but can’t define the word and all the other fruit flies on the GOP’s carcass will push the party further and further into irrelevancy for a long time to come.

Keep up the good work!

” those who scream “socialist” but can’t define the word”

For clarity, socialism comes in various forms and to varying degrees…….the proper term when applied to this country should be “socialistic”. And one can look at it on a sliding line graph moving left and right.

Whether one wants to acknowledge it or not, adding another “socialistic” entitlement program to the stable of entitlement programs has moved the pointer on that line to the left……which is closer to socialism and further away from capitalism……….

WHY would anyone want to secede when our nation’s top-brass sex scandal is just beginning to heat up? Hahaha! Not much of a voyeur myself, and certainly not interested in those horrid little fantasy books all the married women are reading, but jeepers — when the details start falling out, we’re all going to see how truly twisted these buttoned-up rightie militants really are. If you can’t leave, your not free. Secession is the founding American political principle and the Declaration of Independence is a Secessionist document. You reject this means to an end at your peril. By the way, there is an active Southern nationalist movement: The League of the South. I suggest you check it out. All you Toby Keith lovin’ heel clickers who just can’t wait for the next war might not feel welcome. But those of you who think we’d be better of without DC weighing us down just might like what you see at the League.

Okay. The civil war. Why? Slavery. The most important document in US history is Jeff Davis’s inaugural address. Read it, my fellow Americans. It proves what the war was about. Not states rights. Not taxes without representation. Not border disputes. Not anything but that very peculiar institution. Don’t believe me. Read what Jefferson Davis himself had to say when Secesh elected him The President of the Confederate States of America.

I am so sick of my Republican friends crying over this election. I know a few who would sign a pro-secession petition in a minute. However, these are the same people who never got off their butts to do one thing to help their party. Not one of them tried to change my opinion, not one wore a button, attended any rally, offered to take anyone to vote, no yard sign, not even a bumper sticker! So if they aren’t going to put any effort into helping their Republican party then I don’t expect they will do much to help the state secede from the union- other than a signature.

So “socialist” or “socialistic” is a free-floating pejorative that you can trot out to substitute for having an actual thought?
Since Teddy Roosevelt, the injection of regular doses of what you would call socialism has strengthened and preserved our capitalist economy. The removable of sane regulation (again “socialism”) by the Cheney-Rove regime brought us to the brink of complete collapse. That was an expensive lesson for you to sleep through…

No, it’s common sense. Socialism/socialistic refer to ideas of group effort vs individual effort, and all that goes with both.

And the “strengthened and preserved” part is highly debatable when we are in the middle of an economic crisis caused in part by a stable of entitlement programs we are having a hard time paying for………

Dear Mr. Wingfield, Must be easy from your lofty point of view to tell us to sit down and shut up.

I have two sons age 29 and 28. My oldest recently married and they would like to start a family. Both boys are afraid to even considering making career changes.

Four more years of Obama’s disastrous economy and wreckless foreign policy will rob them of the best of their earning years. If we do manage to finally get a fiscally sound POTUS it will take four more years to even hope for a marginal change in the economy and my sons will be close to 40.

You obviously do not live in the real world with the rest of us. Go grocery shopping prices are sky high.

Re-electing Obama does not make it a wise choice…Obama, LMSM and his supporters are turning the highest office in America in to a shameless reality show. The whole world is laughing at us.

Birthers how dare you??? We are suppose to have the power at the state level according to the tenth ammendment. The Feds role under the Constitution is limited and THEY ARE WAY OUT OF THEIR BOUNDARIES. Big changes for big problems. That is if the ME does not try to wipe us of the face of the earth along with Israel.

Stripped of all the post-Hayek mythology, socialism is just an economic model that features collective ownership of “the means of production” and allocates goods and resources through central planning. In it’s pure form it doesn’t work. But then, capitalism in its pure form doesn’t work either.
That’s all it is; an economic model. Calm down, it wasn’t invented in Hades to sap the soul of man.
When there are two competing economic models, neither or which works without elements of the other, how can you howl for purity?
By the way, one aspect of both capitalism and socialism is that a government’s revenues must be appropriate for things like- oh I don’t know, maybe two wars and a new giant entitlement program?

I think this thing isn’t a Republicans versus Democrats issue at all, I would personally support secession of any state, city, property, person, etc regardless of who is in office. I say dismantle the U.S. government, it’s corrupt beyond repair. Those in power are stealing your money through the Federal Reserve and sending our children off to die in unnecessary wars while handing the bill to the unborn generation all so some unscrupulous politician will get a popularity boost in the next polls. We should allow each state to determine its own future rather than the national government, because the decentralization will diminish wasteful spending and return more liberty to every individual because the states will to some degree compete amongst each other for land, labor, and capital. This competition benefits society as a whole because the states will have a larger area of possible control or lack thereof in which to affect the economy and social harmony in a community.

Agree with liberallefty… to wit… put up or shut up. States voluntarily joined the Union they can voluntarily leave. As I tell my friends this was Lincons fatal mistake, holding the Union together.
