UPDATE at 11:25 p.m.: And that’s it. Ohio has been called for Obama, and it looks likely that Florida will follow suit. A couple of near-billion-dollar campaigns, and it looks like two states (Indiana and North Carolina) will have flipped, maybe three if Romney ekes out a win in Virginia.
We’ll have plenty of time in the weeks to come to talk about what comes next for the GOP nationally. Tonight is for Obama and his supporters.
The silver lining here in Georgia, for me: The charter schools amendment passed, giving students and parents more choices in the near future.
—
UPDATE at 9:56 p.m.: With Michigan and Pennsylvania being called for Obama, Romney is right where most people thought he would be: needing to sweep Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio, plus one more smaller state, to win. None of those four has been called yet, and all are within reach. But the hour is getting late, and his margin for error is gone.
Incidentally, and just for the record: Some news outlets have called Wisconsin for Obama even though the votes that have been counted there show Romney leading. Admittedly, the exit poll there doesn’t look good for Romney. But it reminds me of Florida in 2000, when I was looking at the AP feed of votes counted and seeing George W. Bush leading even as the state was called for Al Gore. I’m not saying that’s going to happen this year in the Badger State, but I will wait a bit longer before handing that state to Obama.
—
UPDATE at 8:42 p.m.: Most media outlets are projecting that Georgia’s 16 electoral votes will go to Mitt Romney. This is not surprising, of course, and I wish we were getting exit polls to give us an idea of how the state might have changed since the 2008 election, but there it is for the record.
In other Georgia news, the charter-schools amendment is doing better than expected outside metro Atlanta, which wasn’t necessarily expected to be the case since the issue isn’t as well-known in other parts of the state. With about 800,000 votes counted, the “yes” vote is ahead by more than 50,000 votes, or about 6.5 percentage points.
Nationally, it’s becoming clear — again, not surprising at this point — that Democrats will retain control of the U.S. Senate. Florida’s Bill Nelson is projected to retain his seat, which is one Republicans probably had to flip if they were going to take the Senate.
In the presidential race, I’m seeing some disagreement among Virginia-minded pundits about what’s happening in that state. The exit polls didn’t really bode well for Romney, but you can ask President John Kerry about how much that matters. Obama seems to be holding his edge in certain parts of that state, but not all of them. It will probably be a while longer before we see how that state shakes out. If Romney can’t take it, he will be hard-pressed to string together enough other states to get to 270 electoral votes.
—
UPDATE at 7:08 p.m.: The polls in Georgia closed a few minutes ago. I am going ahead and calling a majority in the state House and Senate for the Georgia GOP. Shocker, I know.
After all, Republicans entered today with 29 guaranteed seats in the Senate to the Democrats’ 15, and 90 in the House to the Dems’ 48. That’s 182 of 236 state legislative seats (77 percent) decided before the polls opened, much less closed, because they weren’t contested in the general election. That lack of competitiveness shouldn’t surprise me at this point, but somehow the magnitude of it always does.
The real Gold Dome drama tonight, of course, centers on whether the GOP can achieve super-majorities of two-thirds in each chamber. That, and what happens with the charter schools amendment.
Also, the AP has called Kentucky for Romney and Vermont for Obama. So, Romney leads 8 electoral votes to 3. LET’S JUST END IT NOW AND GO HOME!!
Kidding. Of course. Sort of. No, really.

ORIGINAL POST:
The first polls closed at 6 p.m. in Indiana and Kentucky. Georgia’s polls close at 7 p.m., as do a number of other states. The flood of election results will begin in earnest sometime thereafter.
Follow it all here and on Twitter, as I’ll be posting updates on the charter-schools amendment, the race in Georgia’s 12th Congressional District, the balance of power in the statehouse and the U.S. Senate — oh, and that other election between Mitt Whatshisname and Somebody Obama.
And if Twitter, blogging, and the Google+ Hangout from earlier today — along with the next Hangout we’ll do either tonight or tomorrow morning — aren’t enough, tune into WABE, 90.1 FM, around 9:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. to hear me discuss the results during the station’s election coverage.
OK, I think that’s it … join us one way or another.

I didn’t think Georgia would be called by Fox at 7:01PM. Guess all those liberals who blog here didn’t vote, or could it be, that their numbers here are much higher than representative of the state as a whole.

Fox giving hints that Virginia may go to Obama as blacks, Latinos, and government workers in the northern part have increased in numbers since even 2008 when they overwhelmingly went for Obama. Exit polls are not directly released to the public – they are used with the initial raw vote to make the media calls.
Ohio is another problem for Romney with the taxpayer auto buyout that is more popular their than most other states. Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati for Obama overwhelmed the suburbs and rural areas in the last election and turnout looks to be similar spelling more trouble for Romney.
Romney absolutely must win Florida, Virginia, and Ohio – along with another battleground like Iowa and/or Colorado. Uphill battle for a late night.

That’s not true. Latest WSB poll showed it close, and the “yes” side’s internal poll didn’t show them running away with it. And probably fewer than half the votes cast in this election have been counted. It could very well tighten back up before the end. At this point, I do think it will pass. But probably not by 13 points.

@ Tiberius – Kyle works for the AJC. He can have opinions other than pointing out AJC bias. Denying AJC bias results in a total loss of a poster’s credibility. Galloway and Downey are opinion writers, but the AJC does not categorize them as such – on purpose. Kyle may be as far right as Bookman is left, but other than maybe Jamie Dupree (columnist for many outlets), the rest of the AJC reporters and editors are Democrats whose bias show every day.

It would seem Tiberious claims to know me. I assure you, this is not true. Old-school conservatives were worthy of respect, even when I did not agree with them on everything. (Who agrees with their preferred candidate on everything anyway? That would be silly.)
Real conservatives don’t think the government should stick its nose in a family’s personal and medical decisions. They value individualism and privacy, not the rabid, religiously-inspired dogma that’s oh-so convenient for getting the church crowd to care enough to vote while not caring enough to actually question or research for themselves. See, sell something to get something else, and you can’t have the first thing back.
Real conservatives care about the planet with which Father God entrusted them. They conserve resources, using them wisely, not wastefully or gluttonously, so that their grandchildren may enjoy those things which only Father God can create upon Mother Earth. Ah, but sell that for quick money on the short, and mega-profits on the long, and you don’t get to keep both. Tsk, tsk….
Real conservatives value hard work, and believe that a man who toils in a daily grind without glamor or fortune deserves respect for those efforts, as it takes all kinds to keep the economy and our society thriving. They do not ridicule those who cannot or choose not to seek the path of greed or exploitation, but believe that even the meek and lesser gifted can, and should, have dignity and basic necessities. The gamesmanship that dismantles American companies and ships jobs to slave laborers overseas for obscene, “know you can’t see how much I grossed” hoarding of wealth is disgusting to a true, thrifty, God-loving conservative. But you sell one for the thrill of power and replace morality with proverbs like, “there’s no such thing as being too rich” then you don’t get to keep the original value, and we see you for what you are.
Real conservatives are delightful people to know! Rare, and disappearing like the polar ice caps, but delightful nonetheless!

Here’s how far afield of normalcy the Commonwealth f Massachusetts has gone:
They reject the most moderate U.S. Senator in the nation for a college professor who claims to represent the 1%, all the while earning over $250k per year teaching two classes a year at Harvard, who owns a home valued at $1.4 million, who lied about her native American heritage to get ahead in academia, and who has never served a day in any legislature in her life. And toss him out by about 6 percentage points.
They appear to be re-electing a sitting Congressman whose wife and her family were CONVICTED of money laundering (he used the Sgt. Schultz defense when asked if he knew anything about it) over a moderate GAY Republican state senator.
Oh, and they elected another Kennedy who has done nothing but cash in on his family name to earn the seat.
THAT is the state of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as of November, 2012.

I have often thought that this election would be pivotal in the direction that our nation, and our world, would move in the 21st century because the choice of President Obama by the American people means that we as a race, a human race, are evolving toward greater consciousness of inclusion and egalitarianism in how we perceive one another.
No one lost this election because we are all moving in the direction that Providence would have us move, in my opinion. We are simply arriving sooner than later toward a kinder, more humanitarian world. There can be no losers when that has happened, and no one should proclaim victory over any other human being for to do that would not be in keeping with the beauty, and the grace, of this undertaking and its conclusion. The collective voice of the American people has spoken, and the now the America that I so love, and have always believed in, will be better able to lead the world, a grateful world, to its higher destination. Thanks be to God.

With all the polls showing Obama with leads in the key swing states, Kyle lead with his guts. As it stands now, Its Arithmetic 303 and guts 206. The GOP seems to have problem. It looks too much like Karl Rove. It’s too old, Too White, too angry and most of all too few. Go back to the drawing board and see if you can come up with a game plan that includes women , minorities and people with a preference for rational thought processes. I know it’s hard, but trust me you can do it. I’ve got confidence in you guys. As a young man, when asked my political affiliation, I’d respond that I considered myself a democrat on social issues and a republican on fiscal matters. That only ceased when the GOP became divorced from fiscal reality. Unfunded programs and wars. Yes you really did that and tried to blame the predictable results on some poor black guy. Count the votes, You didn’t get away with it.
Bottom line. We need two healthy competitive political parties, or we live in a totalitarian state. I’m sorry that the GOP doesn’t seem to be feeling so good. I sincerely hope that you guys get well soon. At any rate, I’m confident that we’ve all witnessed the last charge of the white brigade.

The SS Romney /Ryan slipped below the waves around 1 a.m. last night after suffering a nonstop barrage from the destroyers USS Bill Clinton and USS Barack Obama over the last few weeks. The Romney/ Ryan began taking on water in August after being hit by a torpedo launched by the USS Carter which contained a tape of the builders of the ship saying they intend to throw the passengers in steerage overboard.
.Tne Romney family all made it safely into lifeboats and clutching numerous valuable papers including voluminous tax returns and share certificates for offshore companies and bank accounts
Captains Romney and Ryan were last seen being rescued by a Yacht with a Cayman Island Flag which turned out to be pirates who were members of the 1% looking for money stolen by Romney for the SS Romney/Ryan . Big wigs like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Anne Coulter, Bill O’Reilly, Neil Boortz, Herman Cain, Laura Ingram and Donald Trump were all safe in a heated lifeboat after pushing tourist class passengers in the water. The USS Obama and the USS Clinton picked up survivors and headed back to port.

Popularity and Payoffs over Professionalism and Accomplishments.
That’s how this election will be written about in the coming years.
It will be a history centered on the least accomplished person to ever be elected President, done so solely on has race and popularity , who was able to largely maintain that popularity despite amassing a record of failure he couldn’t even run on. He did it by paying off key constituencies with deficit spending in the hundreds of billions of dollars that will never be paid back in stimulus and bailouts to teachers unions and auto workers.
It used to be illegal to buy votes with your own money, but apparently taxpayer dollars are okay.
The history will be written of how his campaign team spent weeks creating a mythical opponent while their fawning sycophants in the media helped them to spread the word about this fictional character who had ten times the accomplishments of the popular guy.
In this next century, lying this blatant will become the new norm, so thank God for term limits , as we will likely not see this combination of incompetence and popularity in our lifetimes.
A better man lost yesterday to a lesser man; a smaller man.
In the end, history will show that Mitt Romney was too good a man to subject himself to this type of sleazy campaign, but while he can’t claim he won the election for president, he won the election of class.
Something our reelected president can never claim.
Too bad a few union members who value payoffs over integrity made sure we’ll never be favored with a President Romney. America too another step into it’s grave yesterday.

Just think of all the doctors that spent hundreds of thousands of dollars educating themselves for what they thought would be a bright future for them and their families. Little did they know, at the time, that the government, a wholly parasitical entity completely incapable of self support, would attach itself to their chosen profession. How must it feel now to have an unaccountable bureaucrat writing your business plan for you? You think they’ll siphon off any monies so they can support themselves and their hordes of unproductive staff?
That’s right, why bother with it anymore.
So now the rest of the United States gets to find out what any veteran already knows, how atrocious your health care can be, up to the point that you’d rather be sick then deal with all of the government trash.
And for those of you sitting around smugly enjoying your new free contraception/ abortion package, are you a member of the next profession these parasites will surely turn their attention to, once they suck the health care profession dry?

There was not a single state where a combination of Romney and Johnson votes would have changed the results. Florida was close, but no cigar.

tibs, bemoaning classlessness.
Too funny.
I will say that like John McCain, Mitt Romney strikes me as fundamentally a good man and good American.
And had he run as the same man who won the governorship of Massachusetts, things may have turned out dramatically differently.
But………….. running the neocon gauntlet as a reasonable, rational, centrist moderate, willing to compromise to get good work done for we the people, is a non-starter in the Purity Test run GOP anymore.
There are two toxic names that have and will continue to sink your non-conservative ideology – George Bush and Dick Cheney.
Return to the middle like Mitt tried to (too late) or get used to more of this…

Proving once again that you have no capacity for paying attention to anything you don’t agree with, AmVet.
Because he basically DID run as that man. You were listening to the construct Obama, the DNC and the media were more than willing to create from fiction.
Because it fit into your narrow world-view without you having to think.

Americans voted for failure. Sad but true.
For now, Obama can revel in knowing what he pulled off.
Obama won despite an economy that sucked away much of the nation’s spirit. He won with the highest unemployment rate for any incumbent since the Great Depression. He won even though voters said they thought Romney would be the better choice to end stalemate in Washington.
He won even though a huge majority of voters said they were not better off than they were four years ago — a huge test of survival for a president.

I have not been on here regulary for a few weeks. I was hoping that there would be a chance that America could come together for the good of our country. Obama won. Get over it. Some of you seem to be very smart. Obama won both the EC and the popular vote. He won. He won by over a million votes. Get over it. I have read some blogs where people on the right keep talking about buying more guns. For what? Who has had to fire one single shot because of Obama? If you were the Patriot you claim to be, you’d help by doing something or saying nothing. I know, it’s your right. But it’s over. America has spoken. Get over it. How can you be a great American if your hoping she fails? Either we make it together or we sink together. The choice is yours.

Now I know that those of you on the right suspect that I am going to gloat over President Barack Obama’s overwhelming win and mandate. You are wrong. No, I think it’s painfully obvious to even the most dense Republican/Tea Party nutcase: you are out of step with the majority of the American people.
What you really want is a fascist government without democracy. I’m not going to revisit the numerous gaffs and insults and lies and half-truths that alienated the voters. There’s no need to. This should be a gigantic wake-up call to the Republican party. If you allow your party to be shoved to the far right by nut-jobs, prepare to fade into history and obscurity.

Obama has won because the majority of people realized that the state of the economy at the end of his first term could not be judged without considering what he started with.

I was wrong.
I placed my faith in an America that no longer exists, and in Americans with a will to persevere through self-reliance with a “can do” attitude. Unfortunately, changing demographics has placed those Americans in the minority of voters
I am reminded of the Biblical passages from Genesis describing the peoples’ surrender of their crops, livestock and land to the Pharaoh in return for refuge from famine. The people were not saved from the famine, many starved and the remainder became slaves in service to the Pharaoh.
Conservatism as a viable entity died last night. Liberals should closely examine the results, too, because liberalism perished with conservatism. The events that will follow last night’s “free” election will occur with breath-taking rapidity and will not be what most of the “winners” expect, but you shall experience it nonetheless.
So, to the “winners” I extend my congratulations. You, like the people described in Genesis, have surrendered your worldly goods to your “Pharaoh”.
Prepare yourself for your starvation and servitude.

cc at 10:23 — “I placed my faith in an America that no longer exists,…”
This appears to be a true statement. The coalition of minorities and women are a national voting majority. That is the voters Obama’s campaign targeted and successfully delivered.
The white majority has lost 2 straight presidential elections. And the Republican nominee who was being buried in September elected to move substantially to the Left in October and did, in fact, make it a competitive race.
What does it say about the Conservative movement that the Republican nominee for president felt it necessary to move to the Left to be competitive?
The question becomes: what will the Republican Party do to turn itself back into a national majority?
Pass more anti-women legislation? Pass more anti-immigrant legislation? Make it even harder to vote in elections? Just asking?
I am a fiscal conservative who believes that we need to pay for what we spend. I am a small government conservative who believes that government should be, in fact, small. For the past 31 years the US has gotten away from those principles.

“What does it say about the Conservative movement that the Republican nominee for president felt it necessary to move to the Left to be competitive?”
It says, as I said, that conservatism is dead.
“The question becomes: what will the Republican Party do to turn itself back into a national majority?”
I believe that now to be a moot point.
“Pass more anti-women legislation? Pass more anti-immigrant legislation? Make it even harder to vote in elections? Just asking?”
The ball game is over, the fans have left and the stadium is empty.
I also am a fiscal conservative and believe in small government, neither of which is espoused by the majority of today’s voters. The Republican Party has committed political suicide by so deeply involving itself in social issues.
What America faces now is a whole new breed of animal in Barack Obama. He is neither conservative nor liberal, and his plans for America further neither cause. For those who have read and studied him and his actions, what will follow will be no surprise. To those who have blindly placed their faith and trust in him, the coming months will be an eye-opening experience, or maybe what will come is what they desired? There is no “balance of power” because Congress has abdicated their authority and responsibility. The Supreme Court will doubtless be changed to reflect Obama within the next two or three years. Unless I am wrong (again), there will be no need for either the Republicans or the Democrats to worry about a candidate for 2016.

jconservative @ 10:51: Whatever the GOP learns from this election, it better learn this: Appearing to be unserious about the debt and deficit at a time of debt and deficit crisis is a killer for Republicans because of how much time they spend talking about those topics. Romney thought he could get away with criticizing Obama’s bad deficit math without being forthcoming about his own math. I understand the practical reason once one is elected not to have been specific — it makes it easier to cut deals with Congress, which ultimately will have a say. But one has to get elected first.
He obviously thought a lack of specifics was a good political bet, too. And he obviously was wrong.
