History and the numbers say Barack Obama will be re-elected tomorrow. History and the intangibles suggest Mitt Romney will unseat him. Which will prevail?
Let’s look at each.
The numbers have moved solidly in Obama’s favor. He caught Romney in the Real Clear Politics average of national opinion polls on Halloween after trailing for the better part of the previous three weeks. More importantly, he holds leads — usually narrow leads, but leads nonetheless — in enough swing states to push him past the threshold of 270 electoral votes (EVs).
There’s been much parsing of the polls this year, much of it focused on the partisan-ID breakdowns that various pollsters were using. A poll of “likely voters” inherently tells us something about who the pollster believes will actually bother to vote, and that’s as much art as it is science. Many pollsters have been forecasting an electorate similar to that of 2008, a wave election that saw Obama rack up 365 EVs and the Democrats claim a huge majority in the House and, eventually if briefly, a filibuster-proof margin in the Senate.
It strikes me as very unlikely that the electorate will tip so heavily in favor of self-identifying Democrats again. That said, the pollsters would have to be very wrong for Romney to win enough states to capture the presidency. If you look at the RCP average for the swing states, he has a lead in states with a total of 235 EVs. For him to surpass 270, the polls would have to have been wrong by more than 2.8 percentage points on average — bumping his total to 285 EVs.
One of the last states that would flip to him in that scenario would be Ohio. That’s ominous because no Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Ohio.
On the other hand, Obama arguably has an even tougher historical precedent to overcome. Only two presidents have won re-election with a smaller number of EVs. The first was Woodrow Wilson in 1916, who had captured an excessive number of states in 1912 because William Howard Taft and Teddy Roosevelt split so many votes on the right. That won’t be the case in this year’s election. In the event, Wilson did increase his share of the popular vote, from 41.8 percent in 1912 to 49.2 percent in 1916.
The second was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who won a larger margin in both the popular vote and the Electoral College in his first re-election (1936) but tapered off in his third and fourth presidential victories (1940 and 1944) — situations that aren’t really analogous to Obama’s seeking a second term.
Barring a huge turn of events, Obama is not going to repeat his 2008 performance in terms of EVs or the popular vote (he won 52.7 percent of the latter four years ago). So his re-election would be fairly historic.
Why do presidents almost never win re-election with smaller majorities? Maybe it’s a matter of a small sample size; only 15 men have ever been elected to two or more consecutive terms as president. Or maybe voters tend to decide the incumbent either deserves re-election or doesn’t, and move either decisively in his direction or away from it.
If it’s the latter, almost every other measure of this contest favors Romney. Enthusiasm has been higher among Republicans almost uniformly. Obama breaks even in approval ratings — at best — and has lost his edge in favorability. Self-described independent voters have favored Romney — often by double-digit margins — in most polls, regardless of the top-line leader.
The states that moved into the “tossup” category during the past month are states the Democrats once considered comfortably in Obama’s column: The action toward the end of the campaign, in terms of spending and appearances by the candidates and their surrogates, has been in traditionally blue states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Early and absentee voting totals in most swing states, particularly in the specific areas of those swing states he’s counting on the most, point to a shift away from Obama compared to his totals in 2008. Seven of the 10 swing states according to RCP have elected GOP governors since 2008, and an eighth (North Carolina) is expected to do so Tuesday.
In short, the numbers are what they are — but anyone looking for reasons not to believe the poll numbers can find plenty of them.
My head tells me Obama will be re-elected. My gut tells me this hasn’t looked like the kind of campaign an incumbent wins.
My gut tells me the surge Obama has seen in national polls during the past week comes from voters he wasn’t going to lose to Romney, but could have lost to apathy, who will show up and cast ballots for him — but mostly in states he was going to win anyway. My gut tells me we might be seeing a repeat of 2000, when it looked like the Democrat would win the Electoral College but lose the popular vote, only for the scenario to flip in the final days.
My gut tells me Romney picks up North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Colorado and at least one of Michigan/Ohio/Pennsylvania — and will become the 45th president of the United States.

SBinF: As I wrote in the OP, likely-voter polling is an art, not a science. And the other numbers I based my gut feeling on — numbers about enthusiasm, favorability, etc. — are still, you know, numbers. It’s just a matter of which ones you tend to believe. My head tells me these other numbers ought to be more reflected in the topline poll results. My gut tells me they’ll be reflected in the actual voting totals. We shall see.
But I do agree with your last line — although I’m not sure one of those halves, the pro-Obama one, is mentally prepared for the very real possibility its guy will lose. See, for example, mike @ 4:24.

This race is too close to call. This, in itself, is a problem. Regardless of who wins tommorrow, about one-half of the nation will have voted for the loser. This means we are a deeply divided nation.

“As I wrote in the OP, likely-voter polling is an art, not a science.”
And this is certainly true, however if you take hundreds of polls over time, you begin to see a picture that is far more scientific than artful. Many people on your end of the political spectrum swore up and down that the polls were all biased. Then when they showed Romney gaining ground, the polls suddenly had validity. The problem I guess is that the Right is fine with facts and figures when they agree with the Right’s opinion. any other time they are part of some huge liberal conspiracy. In this case, the numbers don’t point to a Romney win, so we’re now left to interpret tea leaves (since you know, polls don’t mean much).

I think you’r e right Kyle. Although I think it will be a bigger win. I think the President loses the Youth vote he had last time. College kids are not dopes. they have seen NOTHING from the promises 4 years ago. they are unemployed and in debt…He loses a good percentage of Catholics.. Not all, but enough to make a big difference because of his stance on contraception and Obamacare, Loses ALL Evangelicals. He is losing his stronghold among married women. He is getting pummeled by men. His base is roughly 35% of the electorate. He has lost many,many independents. Independents are breaking 59/35 for Romney. he will lose at least “some” fiscal conservative Democrats and will get NO Voters that voted for McCain. He is losing some Union workers, ie, Coal miners and pipeline workers… Add it all up, and it’s Romney by way more than the polls show.

I also believe that Romney wins. I have barely seen any mention of it in any political reports in the papers and on the air but I think there is a hidden vote that has totally been forgotten this election season. Religious conservatives. There are 2 millions plus of them that only go to the polls to vote on social issues and they stayed home in 2008. I do not think they will sit on the sideline this year and will come out and vote for Romney. You also have all the Catholics that were in the pulpits this past weekend basically saying a vote for Obama is a vote against the church.
This will be the difference imho.

The Obama campaign is having to compete in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, & Colorado. You can usually tell how a game is going by where the game is being played. They have claimed that Romney’s play for Pennsylvania was a “Hail Mary”. It fully depends upon where on the field the race is currently being played. Romney’s campaign feels that they are close to scoring; Obama’s is convinced that he is not.
Throughout October, the outcomes of polling have been governed not by the responses, but the turnout models that the pollsters assumed. Polls favoring Romney have assumed a more equal distribution of voters (like 2000 or 2004). Polls favoring Obama have assumed a distribution like that of 2008 (or -in some cases- assuming greater percentages of Democrats than voted in even 2008).
One set of assumptions will be found correct tomorrow night. If the models assuming D+x are correct, then it will likely be a close Obama win. If the models assuming a more equal distribution are correct, then it will be a very good night for Romney.
Either way, there is vindication for some and disappointment for others on the very near horizon!

What’s funny, SBinF @ 4:46, is that folks on the left started making some of the same excuses about the polls once Romney took the lead. It’s more human nature than anything partisan or ideological, imo.
Like I wrote, my head tells me the polls tell a persuasive story about a very narrow Obama win. But they don’t tell the same kind of story we’re seeing play out via the campaigns. Which is what made me start questioning whether the polls really had it right.

Even if Obama had had a decent 1st term (like Bush 43), there is no way that he would get Dem/GOP/Independents that were for him turnout the same or larger than ‘08 as the enthusiasm would no longer be there. Inasmuch as he’s had a miserable 1st term, the pro-Obama vote will be greatly diminished. On the GOP side enthusiasm has never been higher and a large majority of Independents support Romney. “The Obama get-out-the-vote drive (GOTV) is not quite the powerful juggernaut it was in 2008 and the Republican effort is far better than four years ago. The Republican National Committee isn’t alone this time. Americans for Prosperity and a coalition of a dozen conservative groups—from the National Rifle Association to the Republican Jewish Coalition—have put together a massive GOTV effort focused on swing voters in key states. They’ve averaged 1.8 million phone calls per day in recent days.
Early voting numbers are further evidence of ground game parity. Democrats have a slight edge, but their numbers are down significantly from 2008. Far more Republicans have voted early this year than in 2008.”

State polls are most assuredly NOT more accurate. They are often done by non-professionals unlike the national ones by Gallup and Rasmussen. All the state polls have a widely inflated Dem turnout. Any state where Romney is w/i the margin of error, he wins easily.

Actually the majority of polling in 1980 showed Reagan leading and with momentum.
Taking polls from weeks and even months before the election and attempting to depict it as what was occurring right before the election is either being disingenuous, uninformed or just lying.

We already know that healthcare and education costs are going up and that, barring an international calamity, we are rebounding and 12 million jobs are coming along with moderate growth for the next 4 years, that’s if nothing new happens from today for the next 4 years.
If Obama is re-elected, then the filibustering Congress will need to do something akin (but not with Akin I hope) to compromising to get something accomplished. They won’t be able to block everything forever or it will become blatantly obvious that it is in fact, their fault. By blatantly, I mean even fox newscasters will say it.
If Romney wins, then the filibustering Congress will have to watch how much they let get accomplished because if the spigots suddenly open wide on Jan 21st, then it will be obvious that it is in fact, their fault.

“Pretty indicative of our political climate….some people subscribe to quantitative analysis and science to understand the world, while other people go with their gut feeling.”
As someone who is familiar with statistics methods, and have been closely following the polls in this election, I wouldn’t be so ready to dismiss “gut” feelings.
For one thing, statistics itself is an art rather than a pure science–if it were otherwise, we would remember President Dewey. It is my understanding that only about 9% of people called respond to any given poll–that’s one massive “nonresponse bias”!
And then you have Obama’s office biasing Gallup, by threatening them with legal actions if they didn’t change their methodology.
And finally, you have levels of energy: Obama has attracted “Incredible Shrinking Crowds”, while Romney energy is pretty strong, even in places like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Most polls are based on 2008 turnout numbers–an election that was an aberration in many ways as well (and was different even from 2010 numbers).
There are lots of reasons, both tangible and intangible, for distrusting the polls. Some of this can even be quantifiable, for those who do it; but for those of us who don’t do it, but sense that something weird is going on, we can call this our “gut”.
Of course, ultimately the only numbers that count are the votes that are cast on or before November 5th.

Unemployment is similar. Heck it remained bad until late 82 into 83, I believe.
1. It is cited that polls showed Carer ahead. Not true, vast majority of polling had Reagan leading and gaining momentum in the last few weeks.
2. Obama’s approval ratings are not the ratings of Carter.

I think the American public has vivid memories of the disaster that was the George W. Bush presidency. They remember the irresponsible tax cuts (which we still live with today). They remember the irresponsible wars based on lies (which we still live with today). They remember the irresponsible housing bubble used to cover up the recession caused by outsourcing American manufacturing. But, most of all, they remember that Republicans, under George W. Bush, very nearly caused the world economy to collapse. Then, they had the gall to condemn Barack Obama for “saving” Wall Street from the collapse they caused. I believe it’s going to be generations before the American public forgets what the Republicans did to this country. If ever.

Good analysis- If Obama loses it will be because of the following:
1. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi;
2. high unemployment;
3. increase in deficit ;
4. “you did not build it comment”
5. Obama is an introvert and does not know how to woo the opposition or even members of his own party;
6. Looming crisis in the entire Middle East;
7. acting too presidential and aloof in the first debate and not being aggressive towards Romney;and
8. Lingering doubts of his true core beliefs.and
9. lack of business experience.
Romney could easily lose because:
1. GOP has caused gridlock in Congress;
2. He has numerous conflicts of interest;
3. He truly does not give a damn about the 47%;
4. He looked like a fool in the last two debates;
5. He is a chickenhawk draft dodger who protested for the war and the draft;
6. He is hiding too many questionable transactions by not disclosing his taxes;
7. He is the father of Romneycare but disavowed Obamacare;
8. He has not been truthful on his position on tax cuts for the rich and how it will benefit him;
9. He has not been truthful about his fake blind trust;
10. He has not been truthful about women’s issues;
11. He has not been truthful and given full disclosure an profits from the auto bailout and his family’s
profits in Delphi;
12. He has not been truthful on his history of offshoring and outsourcing.and
13, He has saddled up with the worst of the neocon chickenhawks but does not give a damn about our troops and veterans.
Conclusion.
If George Romney were running for president I would vote for him but not the son.
I am voting Libertarian.Anyway it makes almost no difference in this state who you vote for in the presidential contest.

Let’s step back from the polls for a second, and just look at what’s available to see.
In Pennsylvania, signs for Romney are sprouting like mushrooms, while Obama signs are difficult to find.
In Wisconsin, Obama draws a crowd of 18,000 when he expected a crowd of 30,000.
In the various places Romney goes to, crowds are large and enthusiastic.
In speeches, Obama doesn’t advance any new specifics, and doesn’t really defend his record, but lashes out against Romney–reminiscent of George Bush Sr. against Clinton in 1992.
Does this *feel* like Obama is winning, and Romney is losing?
If we look at the polls, we see a lot of them using the turnout of 2008 as their model, when that was a special election in many ways; when we have a 9% response, which leaves the question of “Why does 91% not take the survey?” To say they are not hit because they use cell-phones, and are most likely Democrat, is wishful thinking on their part, for two reasons: Many of those who don’t respond, or refuse to respond, are on *land lines*; and, regardless of their non-response, we it’s dangerous to interpolate the polls into this group, because we simply do not know, and cannot know, why they didn’t respond to the poll.
Now, to suggest that the people missed because they aren’t home, or own a cell phone, or simply refuse to answer, are likely to be Democrat, is as much wishful thinking on their part, as mine is that Romney might just pull through: we simply do NOT know what these people are thinking.
(And to throw even more doubt into the polls: I don’t know how widespread this behavior is, but I’ve read accounts of a couple of people, who when they talk to a pollster, will lie, and say “I’m a Republican, and I’m voting Obama.” That’s another type of bias in polls that is impossible to fix; I cannot remember the formal name for that bias, though, but it can be a major bugaboo for statisticians.)
I am unaware of any poll in any swing state that has Obama above 50%. That’s not a good place for an incumbent to be in. Anyone who thinks that Obama is a shoo-in is as guilty of wishful thinking as anyone who thinks that Romney is.
And, being as familiar with statistical methods as I am, I, for one, find all this fascinating. A lot of polls say Obama is going to win, but there are a lot of reasons (including a lot of statistical ones) to question those polls!

The Redskins rule clearly says Obama shall win. During even-numbered centuries both results go the same way–if the Skins win, so does the incumbent, That way there are always en even number of winners in DC(either 2 or 0), to match the even-numbered 20th Century, which incidentally also has the digits 2 and 0 in its makeup.. During the odd-numbered centuries, the Skins do the opposite of the incumbent, so that there can be only one winner, which is an odd number. Proof: Bush won in ‘04.

“My warning, we need to stay calm for much of the day,” Stephanie Cutter, Mr. Obama’s deputy campaign manager, said, touting thousands of early ballots already submitted by voters. “We’ve already banked a pretty big portion of our vote.”
And yet Dem early voter turnout is less than 2008 and Republican early voting in 2012. Not a good sign IMO.

I predict that the polls will be rendered meaningless for this election, and likely the next one as well.
The methodologies being used are with land lines (which are disappearing) and also do not take into effect early voting.
Add to that, the mainstream polls are using a model (in many cases) with a higher turnout of Democrats than turned out in 2008. The “enthusiasm gap” between McCain and Obama does not exist in 2012 with Romney and Obama. In fact, larger crowds are greeting Romney at every even, and Obama’s crowds with Bruce Springsteen are drawing anemic responses.
The President looks, moves and sounds tired. In some instances, he sounds resigned, citing that this is his last campaign no matter what that is causing it. Or, could it be he sees the writing on the wall with his internals? Romney, on the other hand, sounds energized and upbeat. He’s added two more campaign stops on Tuesday in Ohio and Pittsburgh.
The early returns on the East Coast will tell it all. If Romney wins FL, NC and VA, we’re in for a long night of watching OH, CO, PA and WI. If Romney loses any one of those three eastern states, we can all go to bed early. If Romney wins PA in addition to the first three, it’s all over.
I still maintain that it will be less than 20 electoral votes between the winner and loser. That will be thrown out the window if Romney wins PA. And given the early absentee voting in OH and demographic changes, I just don’t see a path for Obama to win that state.
Either way, I will not be surprised with either outcome, just pleasantly surprised if it is Romney.

As Ohio Counts, So Waits the Nation
“If the presidential election goes into “overtime” — if no winner is known on Wednesday morning after the election — the culprits may be procrastinating absentee voters in Ohio. If it goes on beyond that with no decision, it may be due to lawyers from both parties’ fighting trench warfare over individual ballots in a bloody recount. It could easily happen in other states, but the danger of an “overtime” election is perhaps greatest in Ohio.
This year for the first time, Ohio officials mailed every registered voter in the state an application for an absentee ballot. A total of 1.3 million applications flooded in, and to date some 1.1 million, or 85 percent, have been returned. But many of the rest won’t be mailed before the election. So what if the voters who failed to send in their absentee ballots show up at their polling places on Tuesday asking to vote?
They will be allowed to, but only by provisional ballot in order to make sure they don’t vote twice.
…By law, none of those provisional ballots can be opened and counted for ten days — until November 17…”

Here’s my prediction (even though nobody asked):
You’ve got your true believers on both sides, who’ll vote for their candidate. Most of the rest will either hold their nose and vote for Obama or hold their nose and vote for Romney. Whichever camp can get the most nose-holders is the one that will win.
And while I’m answering questions that nobody asked, I’m voting against Amendment 2. It’s the perfect opportunity for somebody to lock their buddy into a 20 year lease before anybody realizes what is going on. Can’t/won’t happen you say……
More than 10 years ago, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners wanted to build a new courthouse, but they were held back by a provision in the state constitution that said local governments could not issue bonded indebtedness without first getting voter approval in a referendum.
Jackson County voters turned down the bond proposal in a referendum, so the commissioners took another approach. They drafted a lease-purchase arrangement to have a new courthouse built, then approved it without holding another referendum.

And don’t underestimate the “coal vote”…..
November surprise: EPA planning major post-election anti-coal regulation
“President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency has devoted an unprecedented number of bureaucrats to finalizing new anti-coal regulations that are set to be released at the end of November, according to a source inside the EPA.
More than 50 EPA staff are now crashing to finish greenhouse gas emission standards that would essentially ban all construction of new coal-fired power plants. Never before have so many EPA resources been devoted to a single regulation. The independent and non-partisan Manhattan Institute estimates that the EPA’s greenhouse gas coal regulation will cost the U.S. economy $700 billion.
The rush is a major sign of panic by environmentalists inside the Obama administration. If Obama wins, the EPA would have another four full years to implement their anti-fossil fuel agenda. But if Romney wins, regulators will have a very narrow window to enact a select few costly regulations that would then be very hard for a President Romney to undo.”

I am fortunate (blessed) to have used my God given talents to earn income sufficient enough to make charitable contributions and still pay too much money in federal taxes. Like Romney, if I given 30% of my income to charities that I support; the federal government should not ask me to pay more than others who make less to pay. To put the burden of the Nation of those who sacrifice, take more risks, and use their God given talents to earn an income for their families is wrong (both morally and spritually). Blue states have more Dems, obviously they are blue, but a better paid more educated class of Dems(union folk), red states just have more government dole uneducated Dems.

Nope, not if your small government belief is primary. But in 50 words or less:
I will never try to take your life, liberty or property through the use of force or fraud, and simply ask you to do me the same favor. Abort or don’t, marry or don’t – I don’t care. Just leave me and my paycheck and lifestyle (as boring as it is) alone.

November 5th, 2012
8:54 pm
“What happens to America if the trend towards the erosion of the middle class continues, and wealth continues to elevate to the few? Are the resulting poor SOL?”
Two points:
First, on the erosion of the middle class. Government statistics on poverty show that the percentage of people living in poverty hovers between 13% and 18%, and has since the advent of the Great Society enacted by LBJ. That means that untold trillions of dollars have been spent on the poor to elevate them out of poverty and the result is – no real change. So if the middle class is, indeed, shrinking, where did they go? Not lower, as the government even says they didn’t.
The only other direction is – UP.
To your second point, the resulting poor have a safety net that isn’t going to go away, despite what liberals and Obama supporters say. And frankly, given the relative standard of living of the poor in the US vs. the poor in other countries, the poor here aren’t as bad off as many think. Don’t get me wrong; they aren’t living the life of Reilly, but they’re not at death’s door, either.
My issue is with the unfettered expansion of the safety net. People need to try every non-government solution first before heading to the government for support, but it’s the other way around and has been trending in the wrong direction for decades. That needs to stop.

Thank you for a thoughtful column. It’s so nice to read measured commentary.
I agree with many of your assessments, except your conclusion. I think Sandy, the Bloomberg endorsement and the bi-partisan showing in New Jersey may have stirred a huge group of apathetic, or maybe I should say resigned, potential voters. I think Obama may win by as big a margin as before.
And I think Alabama will crush Georgia if it comes to a showdown in December!

And I had thought he was not quite as divorced from reality as the ignorant masses who are his party’s base. Yes, he tiptoed around the issue and equivocated, but he chose to reject reason and side with unsubstantiated opinion. Maybe he actually does have a future in conservative punditry.

Kyle I would say your “heart”, not your gut, is picking Romney.
But truthfully, it is to close to call.
I have been playing with the RealClear poll averages for a few weeks. The move toward Romney I was seeing is now gone. Obama is up in 8 of the 12 states I am following. And there is no movement in the last 4 days. The numbers just sit there unchanged.
Romney will not carry any of “Michigan/Ohio/Pennsylvania”. He may lose Colorado also. But even without Colorado I have Obama with 281 EVs with a strong possibility of losing New Hampshire which would still give him 277 EVs.
I am Catholic and we Catholics need Romney to win. But it appears Obama will win and we will need to win the several dozen lawsuits already filed. SCOTUS we are on the way!

Tiber – Yes, some people are relatively poor and the percentage hasn’t changed all that much. Of course, the definition of “poor” changes over time, so you’re pretty much going to have the bottom 15% being the bottom 15% no matter how much or little they earn. What has changed greatly over time is the percentage of total income going to the top 1% of households. These are the people that whine that the government wants too much from them because they’re creating all these jobs and are so good for society. If life is so unfair for them, why are the rich getting richer at a faster rate in the USA than in any other first world country?

Apparently it is easier to understand Romney’s plan to cut taxes 20%, thus losing 4.8 trillion in tax revenue over 10 years, and add to that additional trillions of unnecessary defense spending, and not have the national debt go up and up.

I hope you’re right, Kyle…but I don’t think it’s going to happen.
All the early voting has been real heavy this year, and the great majority has been because the Democratic Party (and Black churches, in many areas) have made real pushes to get Democratic voters to the polls. (That’s one reason there has been so many lawsuits demanding early voting…gives them time to get more of their voters to cast votes.)
Also, Hurricane Sandy was a huge swing in the momentum. President Obama got to campaign by just doing his job…all the while claiming NOT to be campaigning. That’s one huge advantage of being the incumbemt…remember Bush at Ground Zero? Plus, that immediately transformed all FEMA money into Obama campaign funds.
And I think this is going to be one election where the Electoral College actually helps the Democrats. I think that Obama is going to carry a few key states by razor-thin margins, and the “winner take all” system will help him. If all states used the “congressional district aportionment” system for casting electoral votes (like Nebrasks and Maine), no election so far would have been different, although the final totals would have been slightly different. But this election might well be the first one that the “winner take all” system for electoral votes makes a huge difference.

Since that was the only rational thing you said, I’ll quote the worthy part.
If ALL Mr. Obama did was pay Bush’s debts, then I’d say you were right, but that is NOT the case, and you know it! Stop ignoring all the stuff–Obamacare being the one you can’t ignore, because it is his trophy legislation–that works against your argument, because that’s the only way you can continue without it collapsing on itself.
If Jane was wrong, then why is the DEFICIT (not the debt) MUCH higher than it was? If he was any good, at least the deficit would be ROUGHLY close to what it was. It is not, and you can’t just blame Bush for that without closing your eyes to truth some.

The bottom line is, who would you like to be going into this election? Obama or Romney? Who has more paths to victory? If you can answer that truthfully, then you know who’s going to win.
Romney’s campaign is beginning to crack and sounding increasingly desperate. The Jeep ad about jobs going to China was such a blatant lie that Chrysler stepped in to debunk it. Ryan claiming today that Obama threatens “christian values”. Ann Romney is looking more strained than usual.

President Obama wants to slow the rise of the oceans was the punch line that left them laughing at the republican convention. In the days leading up to the election Mitt was closing fast. Then came Sandy. It’s funny to me that the party that claims to be so holier than thou doesn’t recognize an act of god when they see one. Not only did the storm stop Mitt’s momentum, it reversed it. Polls are good when they tell you what you want to hear, and evidently they’re lies from the pit of hell when they don’t.
One factor that could skew the polling would be an over sampling of land lines, and a corresponding under sampling of cell phones. Let’s see who has land lines? Could it be old white People? Cell phones? That would tend to be the not so old and not so white. I would think that polling inconsistences, if they exist, would tend to favor the president. However, if voters in democratic districts should suddenly find themselves attacked by hordes of locust I’ll be forced to concede that I was wrong.

You decide. Sparkle or substance?

Handle any situation?
Really?
Did he “handle” the debt and deficit? No.
Did he “handle” Benghazi? No.
Did he “handle” bi-partisanship? No.
Did he “handle” creating any net jobs? No.
Did he ‘handle” openness and transparency? No.
Really, Finn?
And Romney shallow on details, huh? Governor of Massachusetts, didn’t raise taxes, balanced his budget, lowered unemployment to to what is considered to be full employment levels, maintained top notch public schools, created jobs without government help, saved the Salt lake City Olympics. Romney’s resume is something Obama could only dream of, even after 4 years as President.

Well the end is nigh! Barring an upset of epic proportions tomorrow will dawn with the President’s re-election with an EV count of probably around 303, the Senate in Democratic hands and some small gains in the House. Hopefully The President can rise above mediocrity in this cycle and allow taxes to revert to the Clinton era levels, hold the line on the Sequester and drive a budget bargain with the obstante Republican minority that includes revenue enhancement and spending restraint. It would be nice if we could get immigration reform passed and the health care law tweaked to counter the knucklehead Republicans that have not taken the Medicare deal.
On the Republican side, there had best be some serious soul searching because if you couldn’t make gains in this cycle when will this message EVER work?

OK, abortion.
Romney personally believes that abortion is wrong.
From a governmental side, he would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned and have the states decide how they would like to approach this. He doesn’t want the Federal government to fund abortion activities. Finally, he believes that abortion should be illegal, except in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

While I like the RCP averaging methodology I put more confidence in the professional polling organizations Rasmussen and Gallup and there polling shows a neck and neck toss up race. Rasmussen gives Romney a slim edge in FL, VA, CO tied in Ohio and Wis. and about a point behind in N.H., behind in Nevada but within the margin of error. So the argument is as follows: Romney WILL cut the tax rates across the board, which will cut the tax revenues by the estimated $4.8 trillion in 10 year, minus the unspecified cuts in loopholes and deductions, which would be a political suicide to spell out now. And IF the economy improves sufficiently, that MIGHT make up for the lower rates.
And IF NOT? We will be in an even bigger hole than we are now. But that will be for the next Democrat to worry about and be criticized for.

Tiberius wrote…”Find me a link which shows that Romney didn’t balance his state’s budget.”
Now unless you live under a rock you know that Massachusetts law requires that all state budgets be balanced. Romney didn’t do anything that any other Governor wouldn’t have been required to do.
Tiberius wrote…”Find me a link which shows Romney actually raised taxes.”
Well not but about $500 million annually…
“The state of Massachusetts raised $500 million in new revenue during Romney’s first year in office from fees, more than any other state surveyed.[34] Romney proposed 33 new fees along with increases in 57 existing fees,[35] resulting in higher costs for birth certificates, new car purchases, driver’s learning permits, firearms permits, professional licenses, and billboards advertising, as well as for many state services.[36][29] He also increased a state gasoline fee originally intended for cleanup of contamination around underground fuel storage tanks.[3] The two cents per gallon increase made for a total effective state gasoline tax of 23.5 cents per gallon, generating about $60 million per year in additional revenue ”
Sounds like a tax increase to me.
Tiberius wrote…”Find me a link which shows that Massachusetts schools dropped in their national ranking while Romney was governor.”
Massachusetts schools have been rated highly of course that is not Romney’s doing
“Education experts also link student success with the aggressive education reform law Massachusetts passed in 1993. These reforms established a state accountability system that became the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, or MCAS.”
All Romney did was cut funding and ride out the term
@Tiberius…”Find me a link which shows the unemployment rate going up in Massachusetts during Romney’s term.”
“Job growth in Massachusetts rose at a rate of 1.5 percent (compared to the national average of 5.3 percent), placing Massachusetts 47th of the 50 states in new job creation over the course of Romney’s term.”
Plus….
“Unemployment in Massachusetts rose during Romney’s first year from a rate of 5.6 percent in January 2003, when he took office, to a peak of 6.0 percent in mid 2003.[68] It then steadily declined over the remainder of his term, ending at 4.6 percent in January 2007,[68] his last month as governor, for a net improvement in unemployment of 1.0 percent.[61] Much of the improvement in unemployment during Romney’s first three years in office reflected the loss of working-age adults from the labor force,[64][69] many of them having left Massachusetts for other states during the period.[70][64] Massachusetts experienced one of the highest levels of net out-migration of any state during Romney’s term”
Only reason the rate was down was people LEFT.
Everyone one of your premise’s/Romney accomplishments is bogus.

Why don’t you take the day off and just watch the results coming in? I can’t see how this “dueling” helps the country at all. Trying to cut each others throats in politics is bound to make conflict lfor the governmen/citizens of our country.
Didn’t you learn anything in the disgraceful foul play conjured up against Bush while he did everything in his power to advance our country? It is a lasting disgrace still offered by weak minds.
Now you are setting the stage for another foul onslaught for whomever wins this election. The attributes and failings of both candidates have already been fully discussed and cussed.
Let’s drop the sticks and stones mantra and look beyond the childish behavior. Our country needs the support or cogent citizens, not a pack of watch dogs snarling at each other.

I told my banks they had 2 choices (there’s that word again), lower my rate or not lower it and I’d pay off the balance. Only one was willing to play, they got my business. I still feel Mr. Romney should have based his political strategy more on the repeal of ObamaCare. Frankly I would just let the south go If I were America. Let it go totally.
They can elect Jefferson Davis grandson or something and live the way they want. Backwards.
Also the red states take far more from the Federal Government than they pay in. They are the welfare states.
States like New Jersey, as Gov Christie pointed out, take far less from the Government than they send in.
States like New York and California have been subsidizing the South for a long time now.
Just let the South go and let it turn into a third world country. Then the rest of the USA can thrive.

Arguing over polls is just as pointless today as it was nine months ago.
The fact that Obama does not deserve to be re-elected is a fact. Liberals tend to rely on Obama’s words, whereas conservatives rely on his actions. His actions have never matched his words.
Those hollow styrofoam columns reminiscent of Greece, of all places, were a dead giveaway, along with the fake smoke & mirrored teleprompters.
He promised to stop the flow of the oceans, but Sandy defied him & his FEMA squad who told homeless, hungry, thirsty, wet, cold, powerless callers to get help via the internet.
Obama has never wanted to BE president. He enjoyed RUNNING for president & ACTING like he was president. If he looses, that will not change much. On Wednesday, he can continue RUNNING for president for the next 4 years, just like he has for the last 4 years.

Obama is like Teddy Kennedy. He doesnt want to be President, he just doesnt want anyone else being President.
And Mr Fairplay Teddy, sabotaged Carters campaign against Reagan.

You must have been an out of control individual at one time or have you been so dry and rigid your entire life?
Some people who exhibit patterns such as those you exhibit, do so to suppress bad habits of years past. They get in a “rigid” zone.

Rigid? This is just a brief snapshot of what I ALLOW others to see……..
As for the rigid part, actually just the opposite……I say live and let live, but since it is fact that we choose everything we do, don’t come crying to me when your choices don’t work out for you…..I live with my bad choices (I have no problem raising my hand and saying my bad), so others can do the same.
Should a student that chooses to study 24/7, does not partying and makes A’s have to share those A’s with a student that CHOOSES to party 24/7, does no studying and makes F’s??
Now expand that question to life in general and ask yourself the answer……….many don’t much like their answer because it boils down to choices……or blame and excuses.

I did tell it all, Black Label…Our President Bush got the Dow up to 14,000 and then the Dodd-Frank recession hit. All this after inheriting the dot-bomb collapse and the Islamofascist 9/11 attack, which was conceived, planned, trained for on Clinton’s watch.
Obozo hasn’t managed to get it back to where it was before the recession. Obozo’s record is exceedingly pathetic.
