The day is almost upon us. It’s time to declare.
After a very long election season, we’re a few days away from learning whether Barack Obama will be re-elected or if Mitt Romney will replace him. Which way will it go?
Who will win the presidency?
Total Voters: 1,759
Now, you can find any number of data points to support your desired or predicted outcome. National polls, state polls, battleground polls, early voting totals, absentee ballot requests, TV ad spending, campaign stops by the candidates and their surrogates — all point to a tight race, and any can be used to explain why Obama will win or Romney will be victorious. In such a close race, with hardly anyone still undecided and likely to vote, it’ll probably come down to which side’s base is more enthusiastic, and which side’s get-out-the-vote efforts or “ground game” is more effective.
I’m not asking you to make a case for your preferred candidate, just to tell us what you think is going to happen. The nearby poll for this week’s Poll Position offers a range of possibilities for you to register a strong to moderate to narrow win for either candidate. Feel free to be more specific in the comments as to which swing state will go to each candidate.
As for me …
I’ll make my prediction next week!

Your comment is exactly the reason I advocate U. S. withdrawal from the U. N., and booting the U. N. out of this country. I like the way early voting is going with less Democrats and more Republicans. Given that historically more Republicans vote in significantly higher numbers on election day, if the trend continues we’ll be say President Romney early on November 7th.
But the margin will still be less than 20 electoral votes, as I have predicted from day one no matter who wins.
I also predict MSNBC will need a new lineup of hosts, as there heads will collectively explode if this happens.

STATUS UPDATE ON GALLUP ELECTION POLLING following “Super Storm Sandy” has compromised the ability of a national survey to provide a nationally represenative assessment of the nations voting population.
After the highly photographed Obama Christie meeting, the suffering has returned bigtime to New Jersey, Long Island and NYC. 3.8 million without power,no gasoline, not enough food or heat. As the President goes back to campaigning the populace goes back to suffering.

I stand by my view that Republican turnout will be up significantly from recent-historic lows in 2008 in the key swing states (Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado) and nationally, because the post-2008 elections, the party registration data, the early-voting and absentee-ballot numbers, and the Rasmussen and Gallup national party-ID surveys (both of which have solid track records) all point to this conclusion. I stand by my view that no countervailing evidence outside of poll samples shows a similar surge above 2008 levels in Democratic voter turnout, as would be needed to offset Romney’s advantage with independents and increased GOP voter turnout.

The latest Politico battleground poll, released earlier this week, shows Romney with a massive 19-point lead over Obama among suburban voters. Surprisingly, it’s actually one point higher than his lead among rural voters. Obama leads among urban voters by 29 points. In 2008, Obama won the suburban vote by 2 points. The 21-point swing away from him makes his reelection very difficult.
Obama’s approval rating among suburban voters is deeply underwater. Just 42% approve of the job he is doing, against 57% who disapprove. A staggering 52% disapprove strongly. Romney has a net 23 approval rating among suburban voters, 59% approving with 36% disapproving.
Over the past 30 years, no one has won the presidency without winning the suburban vote. Bill Clinton’s successful campaigns were built on getting strong support from suburban voters. To some extent, Obama inherited much of the goodwill Clinton earned with this important voting block. Yet, in just four years, Obama seems to have squandered that.
As the suburbs go, so goes the nation. Today, at least, the suburbs are going with Romney.

One, because the majority of polls in question have oversampling of Democrats trying to mimic 2008 turnout (which I don’t believe will happen), and two, because voting trends of actual and historical trump polls.
This is not the Obama-mania election of 2008; more in the mold of a traditional election where both candidates are equally inspiring and uninspiring to their respective parties. And if I were Obama, I wouldn’t like the cry for help out of Pennsylvania yesterday, especially with a possible depressed vote out of Democrat stronghold Philly due to the storm while western PA (more fertile GOP territory) has no issues.

All the pollsters who analyze state by state races mathematically have the race breaking materially towards Obama. The most popular of these is Nate Silver who has Obama at 80.8% likelihood.
It comes down to if you trust the relatively new method of aggregating all available data points or do you like to cherry pick data points to fit your narrative like voter enthusiasm or rely upon partisan polling organizations like the GOP Rassmussen…..or best of all listen to Dick Morris and his predicted GOP landslide.

Democrats win and here is why:The GOP takes its marching orders from Grover Norquist, Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh. Bill Clinton is spending every waking minute either campaigning and explaining the issues to the electorate or working on his Global Initiative. Jimmy Carter is here in Atlanta working on global health care initiatives. His grandson exposed what goes on behind closed doors when Romney speaks to his base and when Romney explained his true objectives and feelings about the 47%. By contrast George Bush has been living the good life out of sight and is today speaking behind closed doors in the Cayman Islands to wealthy investors on how to invest off shore. His former henchmen like Dan Senor, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove keep advising Romney on how to cast false allegations on Obama and on phantom enemies like Vladmir Putin hoping to stir up the base.
More news comes out that the Romneys increased their wealth by tens of millions of dollars due to Obama’s auto bailout funds with investments in auto parts suppliers like Sensata and Delphi. Both companies have used their new found profits to pack up, fire American workers and reopen their factories in China. Romney hides all this with a phony blind trust and slanders GM and Chrysler saying they are shipping American jobs to China.
Of course we would know a lot more about Romneys offshore investments, role in Bain, phony blind trust and profits from the auto bailout if he would disclose ten years of taxes. His wife says “you people got all you need” dismisively to the voters judging her families numerous conflicts of interest.
Obam inherited the same economic conditions as Herbert Hoover and turned the economy around without a Depression, employment is back to 2008 levels, real estate is coming back, interest rates are still low and the stock market is back where it was in 2007, and Obama inherited three live wars which he is successfully bringing to a conclusion (Unless you believe the unfounded GOP rumors that Al Quaida is resurgent). No other President faced such a challenge -NONE!
The above are sufficient grounds to vote for Obama and the Democrats in Congress and trust Obama will continue to do what is best for the country all American workers and not just the top 1%.

I am guessing that Obama wins between 281 and 303 EV’s…CO, VA and OH remain the main wildcards. I am also sticking with my original thought that the Senate remains 52 or 53 Dems. I think the House will shift toward the Dems by a few say 3 to 7 seats.
I see where the RCP trend line has now moved back to Obama at +.1 overall and that is before several more positive results from yesterday. Given that Romney’ support in the South is overwhelming I think that has a tendency to skew his overall results. For example one of the Gallup Polls that had Obama trailing by 6 also showed Romney leading only in the South and behind in all other geographies.
That said this one that is so close there could be some serious surprises…we may not really know until late in the week.

stands, I think Nate Silver is usually on target (not always), but I don’t think you can punch in numbers each and every time to account for subtle nuances in play this year, especially in particular states. For instance, if you take Iowa and their historical ventures into early voting, Democrats wipe the floor with Republicans in early and absentee voting turnout, while the Republicans do the opposite on election day – including 2008. Not so this year. Democrat voters way down, GOP voters way up. Could they all of a sudden be switching voting preferences? History would say probably not, especially given that there is no historical significance to this election as there was in 2008. Same with Ohio. Obama’s win margin there in 2008 has been virtually wiped out with early and absentee voting, yet we still have election day ahead when GOP-ers traditionally vote.
Now it’s possible that trends are changing due to the proliferation of early voting, so none of this is cast in stone, but there is no indication that 2008 was nothing more than an aberration and isn’t likely to be repeated in 2012 (or possibly ever – unless we get a female nominee at some time).

There is no evidence that Romney can win Iowa and the ground game in PA and NV are just too strong for Romney to win without being ahead in the polls leading up until election day.
Senate may have some wild cards, it will be interesting to see if Bob Kerrey can win NE with all the late Republican endorsements. Indiana may be a surprise as well.

Romney wins by a larger margin than predicted. The 2010 voters just went home for a lemonade and will return in a foul mood. I heard one standing in line, yesterday, say he has been waiting for 4 years just for that moment, and he didn’t mind the long lines.
I know that four years from now, we will still be debating the accuracy of the polls, but it seems that with all the emphasis and complaints on reliability, that this time we could sort out what works in polling and what does not. Why doesn’t Gov. Rmoney talk more about this Planet Kolob place? I have so many questions! Like, if he becomes the US President, does this earn him a position of importance on Kolob? Is it a wonderful, magical place, or is it an overrated shizzz hole? Will American textbooks finally contain chapters on this long-overlooked geographic sphere? Will we finally learn about the history, politics, and economy of Kolob?
Also, will Delta have regular flights there, and will we be able to “build our own” vacation packages on Planet Kolob by combining flight, hotel, and rental car rates? Can we wear our own undergarments, or will we be required to purchase their special ones upon arrival?
If Gov. Rmoney is going to be our leader, I think we need to know these things NOW.

I think Obama wins with a few states to spare. Romney’s recent dash for moderate positions (basically, Obama’s positions) has made this a closer election than it should have been. Still, a lot of people remember what he said when he was trying to secure the GOP nomination, where he had to move to the right of Gingrich, Perry, Paul and Santorum in order to win. Now, in Georgia, that’s a popular place to be, but parts of the country that are a little saner don’t necessarily agree. I. mean, we have Paul Broun and Tom Price and only a few states can boast nuttier reps than those guys.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in a statement Friday the jobs data is a “sad reminder” of the state of the economy. Earlier, the Labor Department said 171,000 jobs were created and the unemployment rate was 7.9% in October. “Today’s increase in the unemployment rate is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill. The jobless rate is higher than it was when President Obama took office, and there are still 23 million Americans struggling for work.”

For the most part, a lot of you need to calm down and realize that your life isn’t going to change much based on this election.
To Romney supporters: Obama’s reelection isn’t resulting in this complete obliteration of capitalism and a toal government takeover of your money.
To Obama supporters: Romney’s election will not result in the government throwing your grandma off a cliff and seizing your uterus.
On the day after election day, you’re going to wake up and go to the same job you had the day before. Four years later, we’re going to whine about the same issues we’re talking about today.
I remember four years ago when people said if Obama was elected, Israel would no longer exist, the terrorists would kill everyone, there would be a total government takeover of health care, taxes would exponentially rise, and the immigrant Mexican army would breed us out of America. Still waiting on any of that.

Post-recession economic growth in 2010 was 2.4%, and dropped in 2011 to 1.8%. This year it has dropped again to 1.77%. Few, if any, net jobs will be created with growth of less than 2%.”

Romney wins by a narrow margin. Ohio and Florida have been hit so badly and their recovery so slow that the undecideds there go to Romney much the way Reagan turned a close race into a landslide. NC and VA return to the Republicans and Mormon volunteers help turn out the Romney vote in Colorado. Romney’s familiarity squeaks out a win in NH. That comes to 279.
Several states will be very close and whoever wins will get less than 300 electoral votes.

Really does not matter. But it is vital that Romney win this election.
Obama has raised the national debt to 16 trillion, the greatest deficit this country has ever experienced. Romney has experience in finances, in business affairs where he made decisions, and the experience of running an entire state.
Obama’s record shows little more than inexperience and failure. He has not made America proud, debt free, inspired or employed. I usually don’t go for this stuff, but here’s an interesting take on November 6:
Mercury goes into retrograde on Tuesday, November 6, meaning the road that we have been on for five years since 2008 now requires that we make choices and decisions. The climb to the summit has ended but now we must choose the directions we need to go, to pursue the spiritual journey, purpose and pathway for 2013. This Mercury retrograde is setting the stage from the incredible climb since 2008, to now make choices of the path to pursue that takes us into our true purpose.
All of the challenges, difficulties and accomplishments can now become part of our shift into a new world. 2012 is a universal FIVE year (in numerology terms) which represents CHANGE, BREAKTHROUGH AND FREEDOM. You will need to be ready to break free from the past and move into new directions, shifting your goals, location and purpose. The day before Mercury turns retrograde, the planet of Uranus turns retrograde, to begin the changes that will come with the changing winds of Uranus. It is time to break free from the past situations in which we have been diligently working since 2008. from David Letterman Show:
Biden’s top 10 reasons for voting early
10. I’m not saying each early voter gets a free cheeseburger, but I’m not saying they don’t either.
9. It’s vastly more effective than voting late.
8. You know who votes early? People with a backbone like a ramrod.
7. In a less crowded polling center, there’s plenty of room to stretch out, linger and relax.
6. If you vote early you don’t have to pay taxes. I’m sorry I’m being told that’s not accurate.
5. Single and looking to mingle? Find that special someone in the early voting booth.
4. Of course, there’s the open bar.
3. Not exercising your right to vote is malarkey – it’s literally malarkey.
2. Early voters will receive a $5 million donation from Donald Trump.
1. Honestly, don’t you want this election over with already?

I would not expect anything else from you than what you have written about Romney and Obama, no matter how much I disagree. But I wonder why you keep repeating that “Obama has raised the national debt to 16 trillion, the greatest deficit this country has ever experienced.” As I have pointed out to you a few days ago, EVERY president in recent history raised the national debt to the greatest amount this country had ever experienced. (And please, for next time, do not confuse national debt and deficit.)

With all due respect, the problem is that you keep writing things you do not understand, and which are patently false. Not to mention the obligatory accusations like “blind protege of Obama’s.”
For one thing, no president really “raises a debt.” Perhaps you have not noticed, but it is the Congress that “raises a debt.” Second, you apparently also have not noticed the deep recession Obama’s term started with. Do you think it had nothing to do with the increase in the national debt? I could point out, for instance, that Ronald Reagan increased the national debt by 189%, more than twice percentage of Obama’s increase. I am not saying that it is an argument I would actually use, but it is no worse than what you argue.

Will we still be the USA(United States of America) or do we become the UUSA(Un-United States of America)? (2) Already got a plan in mind if Obama is re-elected. I will immediately contact federal govt to get my free Obama phone and get my free stuff, just like the liberals do.All cons should do the same, everyone get your free stuff and then the tax-payers will get pissed! I will make my prediction Monday afternoon.
I am struggling with how to handle one development. The weekend before the Denver debate Romney felt it necessary to move past the center to the left. Why?
Speculation leads me to believe that they did not believe they could win without that move. To me that means they are dependent on the ladies vote from the Democratic center; call them Romney Female Democrats. Those ladies may hold the election in their hands. Will that move to the left be successful?
Today I do not know.

The election comes down to this…Democrats are expecting equal or better turnout than in 2008. Won’t happen, economy just not doing well enough to expect that. GOP is expecting equal or better turnout than in 2010. That won’t happen either, Romney is just not conservative enough to get that much enthusiasm. Early voting usually favors Dems, but lots of reports that GOP is showing up early too. I expect polling locations to be steady but not crazy on Tuesday. The election is coming down to Ohio. I foresee Obama leading 263 to 253, with Ohio going undetermined for several days if not weeks due to voting machine and absentee ballot issues. Winner gets the spoils. BTW, that also explains why Romney is in PA, he is hedging bets and trying to win next closest (vote, not just geography) state, so that optimistically he could be ahead 273 to 243 and Ohio would not matter. But I don’t see him pulling it off. My hope is that whoever wins takes both EC and popular vote, do not want another 2000!

President Obama will be re-elected by winning swing states Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire and Ohio and possilbly Colorado. He will lose swing states Florida, North Carolina, and and possibly Colorado.
He will lose Wisconsin, not considered a swing state, and this will be the biggest surprise of the night.
And the political party of the “pale male” will be left wondering how it could have possibly lost this election to such a weak incumbent. Mainstream republicans will blame the hard right wing of the party and the hard right wing of the party will argue that Romney was never their choice in the first place.
In 2016 the hard right wing of the party will “wise up”, quit supporting multiple hard right wing candidates in the primaries thus allowing mainstream republicans like Romney, McCain and Bush to win the nomination. These hard right wingers will secure the nomination for someone like Santorium and then will lose the 2016 election in an electoral landslide.
An almost more improbable story of the election will be the democrats maintaining a majority in the US Senate. For this, there will be little doubt that the hard right wing gave away control of the senate by nominating senate candidates like Akin and that yahoo in Indiana.
Since the hard right wing of the party dominates in Georgia, Senator Chambliss will lose the republican primary in Georgia unless the hard right wingers are split among multiple candidates in the primary.

“I’m not asking you to make a case for your preferred candidate, just to tell us what you think is going to happen.”
It depends on who shows up to the polls. Most of the polls are using the same turn out numbers as 2008. Here is some points to look at.
1: African Americans turned out in record numbers and made up 13% of all people casting votes in 2008. Will that be the case this year?
2: Youth: Young people turned out in record numbers and voted for Obama. Will this happen again?
3: Suburban white married women with children voted 2% more for Obama in 2008. Will that happen again?
4: Religious conservatives was at a record low turnout in 2008 but they were the driving force in 2010 for the Republican take over of the HOR? What will their turnout be this year.
I think African Americans will make up their come back down to casting 11% (every year average except 2008) of all the votes. I feel that the youth is back to being mostly apathetic and will get back to levels in most elections. White Suburban married women with children will give their vote this year to Romney by 4 to 8% and that the religious right is not going to stay home and come back to normal levels this year.
The above will wipe out the 7 point win Obama had and will give Romney a 1 to 2 point win.

But once you start arguing with specific reasons, than either those are rational and truthful, or they are not. I have pointed out your statements, which were not either.

I think that most of the media and polls are slanted towards the dems. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a break for Romney on election day and wound up with a landslide for the GOP.
I do hope that is the way it goes anyway. I am very concerned with the current administration, and specifically with what Obama meant when he told Medvedev that he would have more flexibility after the election. If he plans on reducing our defenses or some other type of negotiation with Russia, why would he want to wait until after the election. Why be secretive. Very interesting to see how this “most transparent government” is working out for us.

@allegedly Independent Thinker
Texas had a similar real estate recession in the 80s, except it was worse. It was estimated 1 in 4 Houstonians lost their jobs in 1986. Unemployment peaked at over 13%. Nearly every S&L went under. All but one of the major banks went under or was acquired. My townhouse which was going for 80k at the peak (I bought at 66k) had a “twin” sell for 12k in 1986. 80% of the people in my townhouse complex got foreclosed on (often their choice).
There was no trillion $ stimulus. Yet in 3 years everything was back to normal. In 4 years, Obama has made things worse.
Obama thought unemployment would peak at 8% or so. And it might have if he didn’t tell everyone every day how bad it was going to be. Bill Clinton finally had to tell him to just shut up in February. I’d sent him an e-mail when he was elected telling him (not that I expected anyone to pay attention) he needed to tone down the negative waves. Millions are unemployed because he couldn’t quit complaining and he destroyed consumer confidence. He didn’t understand the power of the presidency. He just didn’t get the job.
He still talks about Bush tax policies causing the recession. It was a simple real estate bust, like many we have had in the past. He just doesn’t get the economy.
He tried to spend 51 billion on high speed rail when we had record deficits and huge unemployment. He had the only Congress (a democratic one in both houses) to never pass the budget. He just doesn’t get budgets.
We had unemployment and fear and the 1st act he does as president is provide funding for agencies that provide abortions overseas. He just doesn’t get the job.
And he has no ideas or plans to fix the economy. He has no ideas or plans to fix social security, just to pretend there is no problem. He has no ideas or plans to fix medicare, just to pretend you can magically fix it by continuing to reduce what you pay doctors. He has no ideas or plans to solve the terrorist threat in Afghanistan (ok, that’s a tough one), just ignore it by getting out on a predetermined date.

6.5% unemployment in Ohio is not the lowest in the country. And for 3 years, they were one of the worst. Maybe the fact that it has dropped about 2% in the last year is helping Obama. And home prices have been hit very bad there.

Signified – Global warming has pretty much been debunked now. Since you like science, I suggest that you look at something other than the last 100 years, where the average temperature has increased by less than one degree. In fact, the earth is currently in a cool period. I suggest a little research before you post. Also, as far as your economic “facts”…..it is a fact that if we tax the American people at greater than 18% of GDP, which we are very close to now, revenue decreases. That means that raising taxes will acutally result in less money going in to the government. While we clearly need to tax people, we cannot simply tax our way out of a $16 trillion debt.

Polls are increasingly unreliable because more people don’t respond. No way to tell if those people slant one way or the other.
It was interesting how last month the media spins the drop in the unemployment rate despite the anemic job growth. This month all the headlines are the better than expected job growth (not that it is that great) and the increase in the unemployment rate is a footnote in all the stories.

WHERE IS THE PRESIDENT? HE SHOULD BE IN NEW YORK AND HE IS OUT CAMPAIGNING IN OHIO———-ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HE IS A HORRIBLE LEADER.
IT IS GOING TO GET BRUTALLY COLD UP THERE—NO FOOD–NO WATER—NO GAS—AND WHERE IS THE NATIONAL NEWS MEDIA ON REPORTING THIS LACK OF LEADERSHIP????

What is you point about the tuition? Seriously what are you getting at? Will you inquire about every private citizen in graduate school and how they could afford the tuition? Who paid Mitt’s tuition? Who paid McCain’s tuition? Who paid Cantor’s tuition? Are you assuming that some terrorist mastermind paid for it? Honestly why is this the question you ask? IDIOT.

WHO CARES?. Tens of thousands of students go to school on Federal Aid or through grants / scholarships, even if their family couldn’t afford it. At Harvard right now there are tons of students at school through some type of Aid or grant. Why is this important? Should you only be able to go to college if your parents can afford to pay the tuition? All grants and scholarships should cease to exist? Are you jealous that he has degrees from Columbia and Harvard and it was verified and vetted in the nomination process. Mitts degree is more authentic b/c his parent’s left money in a trust to pay for it? Honestly, this is very stupid query.

Can’t wait to see this arrogant incompetent president kicked out of office. Who on earth wants to remain unemployed for four more years while Obama polishes his helicopter and takes lavish vacations? You know who’s not going to be taking a vaction, lavish or not? Chris Stevens and three other Americans that are dead because Obama did nothing to help them, as we now know. Frankly, Obama should be impeached and put on trial for treason.

Tom,
It’s not a question that you would ask of Bush, Reagan, Clinton, Carter or any other of the 43 presidents. That’s the point. The same way no other president’s American citizenship has been questioned. So you and I know this is not an innocuous question on your part. You and people of your ilk have other motives and its quite disrespectful.

How do you figure? You apparently plan to support someone who doesn’t like America, someone who is working hard to destroy our free market capitalist foundation, who has no respect for private property rights, who believes government should decide how much people make. If that’s what you support, then you’re not an American.

Does Middle America honestly believe that Barack
Obama is going to take Oprah Winfrey’s money away
from her, and give it to Middle Class America?
Do you think Michael Jordan would support a president
who was going to take away his money and give to You?
Would P Diddy, George Clooney, Barbara Streisand or
Brad Pitt honestly support a president who took their
money and gave it to Middle Class America? You may
like to Imagine they would, but would they?
Quite the opposite, Barack Obama has taken your
Middle Class America’s tax dollars and given them
to, count ‘em, Wall Street Bankers, Wall Street
Credit Card Hounds, and Wall Street Mortgage
Brokers. How much bailout money did Barack Obama
give Y O U ? If you got Barack Obama’s bailout,
then vote for him, if not…
When I vote, I won’t be voting for the man who gave
away MY MONEY, I don’t care how many Wall Street
lawyers cried for it. Barack Obama may cut Middle
Class America’s fiscal throat, again, but I am NOT
going to help him do it.
