Emails show White House knew of terrorists’ Benghazi claim within two hours. So why blame a video for two weeks?

The Obama administration/campaign’s story about what happened in Benghazi on Sept. 11 keeps having run-ins with the facts. The latest comes from Reuters:

Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.

The brief emails also show how U.S. diplomats described the attack, even as it was still under way, to Washington.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault, which President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials ultimately acknowledged was a “terrorist” attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.

Administration spokesmen, including White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.

The story goes on to say officials referred to evidence that the violence “erupted spontaneously” — an apparent reference to the alleged protests about an alleged anti-Muslim video. But as we now know, there was no protest leading up to the attacks on the consulate, so it’s hard to understand what sort of evidence they could have been describing. A claim of responsibility by an al-Qaida affiliate, on the other hand, would seem to have been sufficient evidence not to frame the issue even once as a matter of First Amendment freedoms gone wrong.

Unless, of course, one happened to be running for re-election and basing one’s pitch to voters in large part on the idea that al-Qaida is on its way to defeat.

Diverting attention from a true terrorist attack during the initial news cycle, and pretending it was a spontaneous demonstration gone out of control was a mostly successful political maneuver.

Slowly correcting the dodge is old news with much less impact. The MSM downplays it to help Obama. But then you knew that when you asked the question: “So why blame a video for two weeks?”

That somebody had claimed responsibility is evidence? In what world do you live, Kyle? Why was that a better evidence than, let’s say, the following:

LA Times, 10/19/3012: “The assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi last month appears to have been an opportunistic attack rather than a long-planned operation, and intelligence agencies have found no evidence that it was ordered by Al Qaeda, according to U.S. officials and witnesses interviewed in Libya.”

Of course not, but logic also dictates that if they knew this, they shouldn’t be going forward with a false narrative that would also be suspect of being true.

The logical course would have been to say “we aren’t quite sure just yet”…….and that didn’t happen.

Why?

@markie mark…”but then we shouldnt immediately dismiss it either”

Of course not which is why this was said

September 12 — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:

“We are working to determine the precise motivations and methods of those who carried out this assault.

September 12 — White House spokesman Jay Carney, in response to questions about whether the attack was planned:

“It’s too early for us to make that judgment.

September 13 — State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland:

“Well, as we said yesterday when we were on background, we are very cautious about drawing any conclusions with regard to who the perpetrators were, what their motivations were, whether it was premeditated, whether they had any external contacts, whether there was any link, until we have a chance to investigate along with the Libyans.

There is more but you get the idea. If you look at most of the statements regarding the video they reference the unrest in the region rather than just the specific incident.

This President has a clear history of dismissing the seriousness of our enemies and blaming the events on Americans.

What is even more appalling is the number of media and Americans who stand firm with him, even though they know what is really happening.

For some, the ends will always justify the means.

It just means the rest of us must not bend to the pressures to merely accept things because someone in government makes a claim.

“Emails show White House knew of terrorists’ Benghazi claim within two hours. So why blame a video for two weeks?”

The answer is given in your last line of the column, but there is even more to this. Obama and his entire administration is built on lies. They have become so accustomed to the unquestioning masses accepting their lies that they now believe they can lie about anything and the public will buy it. Certainly the Kool-Aid drinkers wrap themselves in the lies and enthusiastically repeat, support and defend those lies. Really…2 weeks to the day…

September 25 — President Obama on ABC’s “The View,” in response to interviewer Joy Behar’s question, “I heard Hillary Clinton say it was an act of terrorism. Is it? What do you say?”:

“We’re still doing an investigation. There’s no doubt that (with) the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn’t just a mob action. We don’t have all the information yet, so we’re still gathering it. But what’s clear is that around the world, there’s still a lot of threats out there.” Obama also said “extremist militias” were suspected to have been involved.

Now where in that statement is the video blamed?

Rarely before in American history has a candidate for president campaigned on such a blank slate. Yet, paradoxically, not a day goes by that we don’t hear Romney, or some other exponent of the GOP, claim that businesses aren’t creating more jobs because they’re uncertain about the future…….

In fact, Romney has created far more uncertainty. He offers a virtual question mark of an economy.

Meet the Press, September 16
MS. RICE: “Well, let us– let me tell you the– the best information we have at present. First of all, there’s an FBI investigation which is ongoing. And we look to that investigation to give us the definitive word as to what transpired. But putting together the best information that we have available to us today our current assessment is that what happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of– of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, which were prompted, of course, by the video. WHAT WE THINK THEN TRANSPIRED IN BENGHAZI IS THAT OPPORTUNISTIC EXTREMIST ELEMENTS CAME TO THE CONSULATE AS THIS WAS UNFOLDING. [My emphasis]They came with heavy weapons which unfortunately are readily available in post revolutionary Libya. And it escalated into a much more violent episode. Obviously, that’s– that’s our best judgment now. We’ll await the results of the investigation.”

LA Times October 19:
“The assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi last month appears to have BEEN AN OPPORTUNISTIC ATTACK RATHER THAN A LONG-PLANNED OPERATION [My emphasis], and intelligence agencies have found no evidence that it was ordered by Al Qaeda, according to U.S. officials and witnesses interviewed in Libya.”

5. Mr. President, given the fact that the international media has been all over the consulate grounds in Benghazi, why have you not insisted that the FBI get to Libya and investigate this attack immediately?
6. Mr. President, when will you lay out all of the facts for the American people, indicating what was known when by whom and why certain decisions were made the way they were?

What are the chances of getting answers to ANY of these questions before the election?

” It is impossible to look at the G.O.P.’s behavior in the last four years — from its unwillingness to consider Obama’s jobs bill, which was praised by independent economists, to the unwillingness of its presidential candidates to consider a $1 increase in taxes for $10 of spending cuts, to the time it spent on sheer lunacy such as questioning the president’s birth certificate — and not conclude that many in the party just wanted Obama to fail in the hope that they could pick up the pieces. Too many Republicans, particularly moderate business types, don’t want to admit how much their party has been led around of late, not by traditional conservatives, but by a radical Tea Party base that has driven decent, smart conservatives — like Bob Bennett of Utah, Bob Inglis of South Carolina, Richard Lugar of Indiana and Olympia Snowe of Maine — out of office.

What I’d say about Obama’s domestic and Middle East policies is that, given the messes and political constraints he inherited in both arenas, he did about as well as anyone could. He kept the homeland safe, prevented us from getting drawn into any sinkholes and killed bad guys. It is not the stuff of foreign policy legend, but it was not bad. I’d say the same at home. He stanched the bleeding in the economy and initiated some smart reforms in education, energy and health” Friedman.

“Ms. Rice, the United States ambassador to the United Nations, has said that the judgments she offered on the five talk shows on Sept. 16 came from talking points prepared by the C.I.A., which reckoned that the attack that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans had resulted from a spontaneous mob that was angry about an anti-Islamic video that had set off protests elsewhere. That assessment, described to Ms. Rice in briefings the day before her television appearances, was based on intercepted communications, informants’ tips and Libyan press reports, officials said.

Later that Sunday, though, American intelligence analysts were already sifting through new field reports that seemed to contradict the initial assessment. It would be several days, however, before the intelligence agencies changed their formal assessment based on those new reports, and informed administration officials about the change. Intelligence officials say such a lag is typical of the ever-changing process of piecing together shards of information into a coherent picture fit for officials’ public statements…

The gap between the talking points prepared for Ms. Rice and the contemporaneous field reports that seemed to paint a much different picture illustrates how the process of turning raw field reports, which officials say need to be vetted and assessed, into polished intelligence assessments can take days, long enough to make them outdated by the time senior American officials utter them.

Intelligence officials, alarmed that their work has been turned into a political football, defend their approach, noting that senior administration officials receive daily briefings that reflect the consensus of the nation’s array of intelligence agencies, but can also dip into the fast-moving stream of field reports, with the caveat that that information is incomplete and may be flat wrong…

‘Right now, there isn’t any intelligence that the attackers preplanned their assault days or weeks in advance,’ said the intelligence official. ‘The bulk of available information supports the early assessment that the attackers launched their assault opportunistically after they learned about the violence at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.’”

Bush and the TP had NOTHING to do with him not attending security briefings or parsing words on “acts of terror.” Bush and the TP had NOTHING to do with him going to sleep while America was under attack or putting a fundraiser ahead of the daily security briefing. Bush and the TP had NOTHING to do with the clearly political line the admin was pushing about a “mob.” Nothing.

Interested Observer–I can’t say that I’m “outraged” by the Obama Admin’s handling of this incident, but I am bothered for a few reasons. First and foremost, I think that we deserve basic honesty from our leadership. Unless there is some overriding national security concern in play, then we are entitled to hear the facts straight up. When there are security concerns, withholding information until a later date is acceptable, but not straight-up lying. Secondly, I was offended by the Obama Admin’s kowtowing to the radical Islamists via their “sympathy” for their poor, hurt little feelings that someone dared make a video which is critical/disrespectful to Mohammed. As Romney emphasized the other night, Muslims world-wide need to grow up and join the 21st century with the rest of the world, a world which includes freedom of speech and equal rights for all people.

Pizzaman @ 11:47: I thought you were questioning where Reuters got the emails. I see what you’re saying now. But the Reuters story explains that these emails were sent from the State Department’s Operations Center.

I (obviously) see this story differently. It appears to me that, about a week after holding a DNC with themed in large part on Biden’s football-spiking “GM is alive and bin Laden is dead” line, there was a terrorist attack on our people in Benghazi. Because “bin Laden is dead” implies that al-Qaida is also mortally wounded (and Obama and his administration/campaign officials make that point pretty explicitly at times), such an attack by al-Qaida affiliates — on a consulate in a country where we intervened militarily, and on the anniversary of 9/11 no less — would be pretty damaging to that narrative of foreign-policy success. Would it not?

And so it appears the White House tried to pin as much of the blame as possible on the video. Yet that story is continually unraveling, and I think it’s perfectly appropriate for voters to take that into account.

“Well, let us– let me tell you the– the best information we have AT PRESENT. They came with heavy weapons which unfortunately are readily available in post revolutionary Libya. And it escalated into a much more violent episode. Obviously, that’s– that’s our best judgment NOW. WE’LL AWAIT THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION. And the president has been very clear–we’ll work with the Libyan authorities to bring those responsible to justice.”

GREGORY: The images as you well know are jarring to Americans watching all of this play out this week, and we’ll share the map of all of this turmoil with our viewers to show the scale of it across not just the Arab world, but the entire Islamic world and flashpoints as well. In Egypt, of course, the protests outside the U.S. embassy there that Egyptian officials were slow to put down. This weekend in Pakistan, protests as well there. More anti-American rage. Also protests against the drone strikes. In Yemen, you also had arrests and some deaths outside of our U.S. embassy there. How much longer can Americans expect to see these troubling images and these protests go forward?

MS. RICE: Well, David, we can’t predict with any certainty. But let’s remember what has transpired over the last several days. This is a response to a hateful and offensive video that was widely disseminated throughout the Arab and Muslim world. Obviously, our view is that there is absolutely no excuse for violence and that– what has happened is condemnable, but this is a– a spontaneous reaction to a video, and it’s not dissimilar but, perhaps, on a slightly larger scale than what we have seen in the past with The Satanic Verses with the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Now, the United States has made very clear and the president has been very plain that our top priority is the protection of American personnel in our facilities and bringing to justice those who…

What we think then transpired in Benghazi is that opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding. They came with heavy weapons which unfortunately are readily available in post revolutionary Libya. And it escalated into a much more violent episode. Obviously, that’s– that’s our best judgment now. Why waste your time on a foolish hitpiece aimed at politicizing a tragic event and furthering the GOP’s disgraceful agenda?

Kyle and his ilk are the same people who never uttered a word when a war based on LIES in Iraq, killed 4000 members of our troops, and about 100,000 Iraqis. But hey, no problem. Their answer is “Bush is not in office anymore.” That ought to make everything “great” now.

In past years, when Americans have been killed in our embassies overseas under Reagan and Bush, the Democrats rallied around the Republicans Presidents in national solidarity to ensure it doesn’t happen again. However, under a Dem Prez, the Republicans can’t muster the decency to return the same patriotic gesture they received from the Dems under similar circumstances.

Instead, they can’t stop themselves from salivating in attacking the President. Had the shoe been on the other foot, these SAME critics will be calling the Dems “Anti-American” for criticizing a “War-Time” president.

Republicans were first outraged that President Obama didn’t refer to the attack as a terrorist act…but they were wrong. He did.

Then Republicans were outraged that he ever referred to this terrorist attack as a response to the video…but they wrong. Intelligence are still suggesting that the attack might have been organized and instigated as a response to the video (see my previous comments with links).

Then Republicans were outraged that administration officials, such as Susan Rice, acted as though the information they were reporting was definitive, when it wasn’t…but they were wrong. Susan Rice, for example, qualified her statements to indicate that the information was incomplete and that the investigation was ongoing (see my previous comment with transcript).

So, since we know that the Benghazi-related information that Republicans and their media representatives are reporting is actually misinformation, what am I supposed to be outraged about now?

Rather than simply setting the public record straight, could you put the whole event into a larger perspective?? In other words, will anyone be talking about this 2 or 3 years from now??

So why do Bush, Cheney, and most especially the idiot Gulianni continue to claim that “they hate us because we are free?” Ron Paul clearly smacked Guliani down over that one, the 9-11 commission report made it very clear that it is our foreign policy that the arabs and others hate, not america itself or our freedom, so why do NEOCONS continue to perpetuate the lie???

It is because, just like Obama, THEY are responsible for laying the foundation for the BLOWBACK and they are so morally bankrupt – just like Obama – that they cannot tell the truth.

It is better that thousands more continue to die for a lie than admit that our foreign policy of the past 60 years has been a complete and total failure. That would require them to admit that it must be changed, and the puppetmasters that pull their strings would suddenly see all of their blood money dry up. October 24th, 2012
1:15 pm

It was an obvious cover up and it is intellectually dishonest to try and parse every word to find some defense for all the lies. It actually started with the Little Rock shooting of soldiers at the recruiting station, Obama/Witholder conspired to say this was not an act of terror. Then we had Ft Hood and Allah Akbar Hassan shooting and killing multiple American service men and women. Again Obama/Witholder defied common sense and labeled this as work place violence, rather than another terrorist attack. Even when emails showed that Hassan had been in touch with the Mullah Looneytunes in Yemin. So, why not continue the charade of we have had no terrorist attacks on America, during the Obama regime, it worked before, the press bought it.

It is actually no different than Watergate, except this is more serious. I can still hear Sen Ervin asking, what did the President know, and when did he know it? We need Sen Ervin today to expose this fiasco. Eventually a whistle blower is going to come out and explain why they tried to dupe us, but it will be after the election. So, if Obama wins, then we can have impeachment talk once again in America. Hopefully, we will impeach him on 6 Nov.

Bruno

October 24th, 2012
1:17 pm

I don’t recall Obama apologizing for the video. What he actually said was “The U.S. rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others” and yes I agree with that.

I think a much stronger, more effective response would have been to emphasize that we support freedom of speech, however offensive that speech may come across. By sympathizing with the protestors, I think Obama sent a mixed message at best, a weak message at worst.

As for the harassment of the filmmaker…not sure what you are referring to…it seems he had some legal issues of his own already and they should be pursued. If private parties have harassed him they should not, however it seems that one should expect it in such cases.

Kind of coincidental that his prior legal issues only became important after the Obama Admin began blaming him for the ME protests. Last I heard, the guy was being held without bail.

Obama lied about why 4 diplomatic personnel died. We also do not know why no help came, and why security was not beefed up after multiple requests. Why you can’t see that this is more serious, amazes me, but then again, knowing your loyalty to the Mistake, maybe not.

This one is going to be around for awhile. There will be hearings for a longtime, much like the Watergate hearings and if the Congress can find a John Dean in the Obama regime, well follow the script.

John Dean report for duty!

Let’s take politics out of the election: Four US patriots were murdered in Benghazi. Let’s say that Obama called the action a terrorist attack the next day. Why did it take so long for Obama’s administration (Obama included) to say that it was a terrorist attack and not based on the anti Muslim video? Susan Rice, Jay Carney, Obama, etc. told us all (US citizens) that the attack was based on the anti Muslim video. The fact is that our President and his administration lied to us to cover up their failure to protect our Ambassador Chris Steven even when requests were denied to beef up security and all signs showed that this was an almost forgone conclusion. How can anyone trust someone (a leader) who is going to lie to us? This should be considered a criminal action. This was worse than any other presidential administration foible.

“I’m not an objective journalist. I’m an opinion writer.”

There are no truly “objective” journalists, because there are no truly objective people. The information each person receives is colored by his or her own personal filters: experience, prejudice, desires, ambitions, etc. The information one shares with others is also colored by these filters.

What we have, instead, are varying degrees to which people endeavor to support their opinions with FACTS when sharing them with others. This variation in the population (as within the journalism community) is broad.

Facts exist independently of how one thinks or feels about them, or whether they’re even known, but most people have no problem sharing opinions with OR without them. Just sayin’.

Romney’s latest debate myths:

17)“I would tighten those sanctions. I would say that ships that carry Iranian oil, can’t come into our ports. I imagine the E.U. would agree with us as well.”

Iranian oil has not come into the United States since Ronald Reagan signed an executive order in 1987 banning all U.S. imports from Iran.

Romney’s latest debate myths:

23) “I was in a state where my legislature was 87 percent Democrat. I learned how to get along on the other side of the aisle.”

Given Romney’s 844 vetoes as governor, Massachusetts legislators dispute this claim. As the New York Times has noted, “The big-ticket items that Mr. Romney proposed when he entered office in January 2003 went largely unrealized, and some that were achieved turned out to have a comparatively minor impact.”

The White House and Obama and Carney and Clinton and Rice made up a story. Al Quida is in 30 countries. Obama has bragged that Al Quida is dead. Obama told us Osama is dead. There is a cover-up going on. Obama wants to be re-elected. This attack would undermine his re-election. Obama did nothing. He let 4 people die. Two of the people died in the latter hours of a 7 hour attack. There were multiple requests for security. Obama is in denial so that his construction of reality does not take a hit. Obama’s story was that A Quida was dead. He created an artificial reality. Obama cannot even bring himself to talk about terrorism. In his world there is no terrorism. He lives in an alternate world created through his own delusions and ideology. He killed Osama, therefore there is no more terrorism.

Surely you, as a journalism major, understand the power of the press. As intelligence begin to come in, it was clear that no one knew exactly why the attack happened. Eye wittnesses gave and continue to give conflicting stories.

However, the main thing to remember is that in this violent and unstable part of the world, a planned terrorist attact and a violent street demonstration are virtually the same thing. My suggestion to you is that you research Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from Jimmy Carter to the housing bust. You might want to enlighten yourself as to the impact that Christopher Dodd and Barney Frank had on the collapse of the housing market. If you are indeed astute, you might manage to learn of the efforts made by President George W. Bush to get Congress to address this impending problem and subsequent collapse.

You will, of course, do none of this because you would then have to admit where the true fault lies.

The aftermath of the attack on our U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya on 9/11/12 leads Americans to only one of two possible conclusions about the Obama Administration. Either the Administration was incapable for nearly 2 weeks to determine we were again victims of a terrorist attack on 9/11, rendering Obama unworthy in our faith or trust with our national security for another 4 years, or the Obama Administration deliberately attempted to mislead the American people about the true facts concerning the terrorist attack since it did not fit their faulty political narrative about their progress in dealing with terrorism, which would also render Obama unworthy of Americans faith or trust for another 4 years. How can we trust an administration to protect us when they can’t even determine when we are attacked, or would lie to us about it?

If there were simply one or two inconsistencies I would give Obama the benefit of the doubt, but even in a court room , the volume of circumstantial evidence can pile up to the point where a conviction is handed out by a jury.

At this point the odds of a cover up are much higher than a series of incredible blunders that stretch our common sense.
