UPDATE at 10:28 p.m.: Predicted sound-bite highlights of the night: Romney’s devastating rundown of the failed economic recovery the past four years, Obama’s comment that it’s “offensive” for Romney to suggest he and his administration weren’t forthright about Benghazi attacks. The former was the best, most sustained argument of the night from either man. The latter, a perfect way for Obama sympathizers to say “the president is back!” We’ll see which one — or something else — resonated the most with voters.
***
UPDATE at 9:54 p.m.: One story line tomorrow will be the way Romney dinged George W. Bush for his budget deficits. And, also in his answer to the way he differs from Bush, says his party “has been focused on big business for too long” and should be more focused on small business. That answer flies in the face of one of Obama’s main lines of attack tonight.
***
UPDATE at 9:36 p.m.: Obama says, “It’s just not true.” Romney says, “It’s absolutely true.” The topic doesn’t matter — it’s been like that all night. This one will go to the fact-checkers.
***
UPDATE at 9:15 p.m.: So far, “aggressive Obama” sounds a lot like “lecturing Obama.” He also is making a big bet that viewers will believe his argument that Romney only cares about Big Business and “the rich.” We’ll see how well the two work as a combo.
***
Will we finally see a second-term vision from President Obama tonight? That’s the advice from Democratic consultant extraordinaire James Carville’s firm, Democracy Corps:
The campaign has reached a tipping point where we believe the president has to offer a bold narrative, policies and choice if he is to win re-election and get to a substantial enough victory that enables him to govern and face the great challenges ahead. The first debate really did disrupt the race and presents a painful real-time test of what happens when the president tries to convince people of progress and offer a very modest vision of future change. Voters are not looking for continuity but changes that help the average Joe.
So far, Obama’s second-term vision consists of more of the things he did with Democratic majorities in Congress or would have accomplished, if it weren’t for those darn Republicans after the 2010 midterm “shellacking.” Put another way: leftovers.
Carville’s firm suggests he try something else — but in fact, the advice looks a lot like using better, more poll-tested ways of saying essentially what he’s been saying all along. This is a bit reminiscent of Obama’s customary excuse that he just hasn’t explained himself well enough. And if Obama does come out with new proposals tonight, will that be satisfactory to undecided voters — or will they see it as a cynical ploy this late in the game?
We shall see. The live-blogging will commence shortly after the debate does, and I’ll be tweeting my thoughts as well.

In the event a faux-intellectual leftist ever publishes a disparaging note on “trickle-down” tax policy/economics/whatever, Dr. Sowell has published a foot-noted disproof of the leftist thesis.
http://www.tsowell.com/images/Hoover%20Proof.pdf
Of course, since it is 12 pages long, not likely any leftist has sufficient cerebral power to stay focused so long, so it may be a waste of time to offer the referral.

Let me rub my crystal ball. Oh, crystal ball, what will come to pass if Romney’s elected?
A new multi-regional conflict will erupt in the Middle East involving Syria and Iran which will involve the Russians and Chinese (since their interests are intertwined with these countries).
To even begin to compete in this new multi-regional war, the United States will have to re-instate the draft and young people will have to go fight in a war they know nothing about.
There is the likely possibility that the United States will suffer another humiliating defeat a la Viet Nam at the hands of the Russians and Chinese.
The United States will lose status in the region and Israel will have grave doubts about their future existence.
Thank you crystal ball.

Real Men laugh at the two kabuki make-up-wearing clowns———————–
.
Here’s what Johnson supporters had to say after the first presidential debate between Obama and Romney: “We didn’t see a debate tonight. We saw two slightly differing versions of defending the Republican and Democrat status quo that has given us war after war after war, a $16 trillion debt, and a government that is the answer to everything. Nowhere was there a real plan for reducing government, balancing the budget any time in the foreseeable future, or a path that will actually put Americans back to work.”
No doubt, Johnson supporters will say the same after debate #2 between Obama and Romney. Much like Ron Paul, Johnson has shown that he will keep fighting, regardless of being excluded from the debates.

Obama may think he is clever by suggesting that Romney is insensitive, unlike himself, rich with too many benefits, unlike himself, not a man of his word, unlike himself, but, Obama never mentions that Romney is even more educated that himself, a Harvard graduate, a very charitable man who gives many millions to charity every year, unlike himself, has a resume that is long and illustrious, grounded in reality. Obama is trying to portray Romney as a selfish, greedy, a liar. Obama is trying to put words in his mouth. Obama likes to paint Romney as a rich man who is out of touch with normal citizens. Untrue. Romney donates his time for good causes without pay all the time. Romney is willing to challenge Obama unlike those who surround Obama in his daily life, telling him what a great job he is doing, buT never confrontiNg him for fear of reprisal. Obama has finally met his match.

Ted–I’m sure you’re aware, but the Obamas gave only a pittance to charity prior to his candidacy for the Presidency. Joe Biden shouldn’t even show his face in public based on how little he gave. Yet, these two Bozos want to paint the ever-so charitable Romney as being hard-hearted. Worse, their rube followers believe them. Style over Substance all the way.

Timeline of Libya Consulate attack reveals administration contradictions
• June 6: Unknown assailants blow a hole in the consulate’s north gate described by a witness as “big enough for 40 men to go through.” Four days later, the British ambassador’s car is ambushed by militants with a rocket-propelled grenade.
• July: Anti-Islam video “Innocence of Muslims” posted on You Tube.
• Aug. 14: SST team leaves Libya. Team leader Lt. Col. Andy Wood has testified that Stevens wanted them to stay on.
• In the weeks before Sept. 11, Libyan security guards are reportedly warned by family members of an impending attack. On Sept. 8, the Libyan militia tasked with protecting the consulate warns U.S. diplomats that the security situation is “frightening.”
• Sept. 10: Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri calls on Libyans to avenge the death of his Libyan deputy, Abu Yahya al Libi, killed in a June drone strike in Pakistan.
• Sept. 11: Protesters converge on the U.S. embassy in Cairo, scale its walls and replace the U.S. flag with the Islamist banner. The protests eventually spread to 20 countries around the world. That night, Republican candidate Mitt Romney criticizes an embassy statement denouncing the video before the events unfolding in Libya are known to the world. Late that night, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says in a statement that “some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet.”
• Sept. 12: Media outlets report that Stevens and three other Americans have been killed in an attack by well-armed militants. Obama denounces an “outrageous and shocking attack” without mentioning the video or terrorism. Reuters reports for the first time that some administration officials believe the assault “bears the hallmarks of an organized attack.”
• Sept. 13: White House spokesman Jay Carney says “the protests we’re seeing around the region are in reaction to this movie.”
• Sept. 14: Carney says the administration had “no actionable intelligence” about a pending attack.
• Sept. 16: Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, does the rounds on the Sunday talk shows and says the video is the “proximate cause” of the assault in Benghazi. “Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous — not a premeditated — response to what had transpired in Cairo,” Rice tells ABC. That same day, interim Libyan president Mohamed Magarief insists on CBS that “it was planned, definitely.”
• Sept. 19: National Counterterrorism Center director Matthew Olsen testifies before the Senate Homeland Security Committee that the assault was a “terrorist attack” but goes on to call it an “opportunistic” attack in which armed militants took advantage of an ongoing protest.

Sadly some folks don’t understand how the economy works and what the role of the government is in helping it to succeed in creating jobs.
Mitt, unlike the Marxist obama, understands that the role of government is to create an economic climate that is conducive to job creation in the private sector.
The corporate tax rate obama now claims is too high he could have cut four years ago when he had absolute power, why didn’t he?
Nah go read what Steve Wynn said about obama… obama is clueless about how jobs are created in the private sector.
Wynn On Obama: “I’ll Be Damned If I Want To Have Him Lecture Me”
On the Tuesday broadcast of the nightly Nevada political program “Ralston Reports,” Steve Wynn, CEO of Wynn Resorts sat down with host Jon Ralston to discuss the presidential election.
Wynn, an outspoken critic of President Obama, didn’t hold back in his latest criticism of the incumbent president seeking a second term.
“I’ll be damned if I want to have him lecture me about small business and jobs. I’m a job creator. Guys like me are job creators and we don’t like having a bulls-eye painted on our back,” Wynn said about Obama to Ralston. An excerpt of the interview is below.
WYNN: I’ve created about 250,000 direct and indirect jobs according to the state of Nevada’s measurement. If the number is 250,000, that’s exactly 250,000 more than this president, who I’ll be damned if I want to have him lecture me about small business and jobs. I’m a job creator. Guys like me are job creators and we don’t like having a bulls-eye painted on our back.
The president is trying to put himself between me and my employees. By class warfare, by deprecating and calling a group that makes money ‘billionaires and millionaires who don’t pay their share.’ I gave 120% of my salary and bonus away last year to charities, as I do most years. I can’t stand the idea of being demagogued, that is put down by a president who has never created any jobs and who doesn’t even understand how the economy works.
Wynn on a scrapped business plan: “I’m afraid of the president. I have no idea what goofy idea, what crazy, anti-business program this administration will come up. I have no idea. And I have to tell you Jon that every business guy I know in the country is frightened of Barack Obama and the way he thinks.

HD–There’s probably a lot of truth to that, but there may be a sizable number of undecided voters still out there.
From a scoreboard standpoint, Obama definitely did a better job tonight, but Romney was just as strong, if not stronger than the first time out. Once or twice, I think Romney could have done a better job by softening up a bit. Bottom line, however, is that he projected an image as a tough fighter, while Obama still was long on making excuses and evading taking responsibility.

Overall, a draw.
Until the fact-checkers get to work.
I’m not sure Obama told the truth once tonight. Not sure his constant interrupting is going to go over well with women (something I warned about in this format), even if it will energize his base.
I found the questions that were picked (by the moderator and crew) were largely irrelevant, nor evenly balanced. Most were clearly designed to put Romney on the defensive and a bunch of softballs for Obama.
I’ll also note that if you really listen, Obama never directly answered any questions asked of him. While Romney wasn’t much better, he at least tried to stay focused. Obama was (wrongly) describing what Romney would do, and throwing out sound bites instead of actually answering the questions.

You’re going to lose. Just like you lost in 2008 only worse.
mike–Although I’m sure that I’m wasting pixels by addressing you at all, let me help you see the light. At the end of Bush’s time in office, he was so unpopular that it was a virtual lock that the Dem candidate would win. The Republicans didn’t help themselves a bit by nominating an old, angry candidate (McCain) who picked a bimbo for a running mate (Palin). Yet, even with those disadvantages going into election night, McCain made it fairly close.
This time the circumstances are a bit different. Obama was a blank slate in 2008, but now he has a record for folks to see–a failed record that is. The economy isn’t really any better now than 4 years ago, so why should the average American think it will be any different 4 years from now?? Romney is far from a perfect candidate, but he at least offers us some hope that things will change for the better.

Obama did go to Las Vegas on Sept. 12. But it was for an open press campaign rally there, not a fundraiser. The event was pushed back a few hours so that the president could first speak about the Benghazi attack from the Rose Garden, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by his side. Obama continued on to Colorado that night for another planned day of campaigning there.

ROMNEY: “I know he keeps saying, ‘You want to take Detroit bankrupt.’ Well, the president took Detroit bankrupt. You took General Motors bankrupt. You took Chrysler bankrupt. So when you say that I wanted to take the auto industry bankrupt, you actually did. And I think it’s important to know that that was a process that was necessary to get those companies back on their feet, so they could start hiring more people. That was precisely what I recommended and ultimately what happened.”
THE FACTS: What Romney recommended did not happen, and his proposed path probably would have forced General Motors and Chrysler out of business. He opposed using government money to bail out the automakers, instead favoring privately financed bankruptcy restructuring. But the automakers were bleeding cash and were poor credit risks. The banking system was in crisis. So private loans weren’t available. Without government aid, both companies probably would have gone under and their assets sold in pieces

“According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, sales of crude oil and other “condensate production” on federal lands and waters are down from last year — though they’re higher than during the later years under Bush. The agency says that amounts to 627 million barrels in 2011, 726 million barrels in 2010″

ROMNEY: “The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you’re paying at the pump. If you’re paying less than you paid a year or two ago, why, then, the strategy is working. But you’re paying more. When the president took office, the price of gasoline here in Nassau County was about $1.86 a gallon. Now, it’s $4.00 a gallon. The price of electricity is up. If the president’s energy policies are working, you’re going to see the cost of energy come down.”
THE FACTS: Presidents have almost no effect on energy prices; most are set on financial exchanges around the world. When Obama took office, the world was in the grip of a financial crisis and crude prices—and gasoline prices along with them—had plummeted because world demand had collapsed. Crude oil prices have since risen even as U.S. oil production has soared in recent years because global demand is reaching new heights as the developing economies of Asia use more oil.
Other energy prices have fallen during Obama’s term. Electricity prices, when adjusted for inflation, are down, and homeowners are finding it much cheaper to heat their homes with natural gas. That’s because natural gas production has surged, reducing prices both for homeowners and for utilities that burn gas to generate electricity.

ROMNEY: “I’m going to bring rates down across the board for everybody, but I’m going to limit deductions and exemptions and credits, particularly for people at the high end, because I am not going to have people at the high end pay less than they’re paying now.”
THE FACTS: Romney is proposing to cut all income tax rates by 20 percent, eliminate the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax, maintain and expand tax breaks for investment income, and do it all without adding to the deficit or shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class. He says he would pay for the tax cuts by reducing or eliminating tax deductions, exemptions and credits, but he can’t achieve all of his goals it under the budget rules presidents must follow.
The Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group, says in a study that the tax cuts proposed by Romney would reduce federal tax revenues by about $5 trillion over 10 years. The study concludes that there aren’t enough tax breaks for the wealthy to make up the lost revenue, so the proposal would either add to the deficit or shift more of the tax burden on to the middle class.

ROMNEY: “A recent study has shown that people in the middle class will see $4,000 a year in higher taxes as a result of the spending and borrowing of this administration.”
THE FACTS: Romney’s claim is based on an analysis by the conservative American Enterprise Institute that examines the amount of debt that has accumulated on Obama’s watch and in a potential second term and computes how much it would cost to finance that debt through tax increases. Annual deficits under Obama have exceeded $1 trillion for each year of his term.
However, Obama is not responsible for all of the deficits that have occurred on his watch. Most of the federal budget—like Medicare, food stamps, Medicaid and Social Security—runs on autopilot, and no one in a leadership position in Washington has proposed deep cuts in those programs. And politicians in both parties voted two years ago the renew Bush-era tax cuts that have contributed to the deficit. Even under the strict spending cuts proposed by Romney, the debt would continue to rise, just not as fast.

THE FACTS: Romney is referring to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a panel of experts that would have the power to force Medicare cuts if costs rise beyond certain levels and Congress fails to act. But Obama’s health care law explicitly prohibits the board from rationing care, shifting costs to retirees, restricting benefits or raising the Medicare eligibility age. Tiberius is right in that medical insurance policies are so expensive because government requires they be the same for everyone. People should have the option of buying a policy tailored to their needs. If you think you will need mental/emotional coverage (someone like Joe Biden) then you should have to pay more to add that to your policy. If you think you might need addiction rehab later, you should have to add that to a basic policy. People who don’t think they need those things should be able to pay for a bare bones policy and they should be able to select the amount of benefits they want. Do they want the insurance to cover every trip to the doctor or just cover hospital expenses. It should be like auto insurance, sit down with your agents, asses your risks and buy what you need.

I thought Romney missed a hanging curveball last night when Obama failed to answer the lady’s question about why nothing was done after two requests for more security.
He had limited time, but I think he blew it when he didn’t say right off, “he as usual did not answer your question”. He could have then blasted him for failing to protect our people, but he was so intent on pointing out how Obama lied when he blamed it on the video, he didn’t address the lack of security issue. Why do so many people think the Keystone pipeline is going to change everything? The oil companies are going to sell the oil on the open market just like all of the oil is sold today. The oil is not going to stay in the United States. Why do some people think the oil belongs to the US? It mostly comes from Canada.

The main thing is that it increases the world supply of oil and should in lower gasoline prices, plus we benefit from all the jobs building and maintaining the pipeline, and jobs refining the oil into gasoline and jobs transporting it to where it is going. It is not “going to change everything” but is a no brainer step in the right direction. Not building it is simply stupid.

Gas prices are set by Wall Street. When Iran said they were going to block the Strait, Wall Street increased the price of oil while no action was taken. An hour after Iran made the threat, the price dramatically increased the cost of a gallon of gas while it was already in the ground, being pumped by us. Why? No action was taken. The President, whomever is in the Oval Office, can no more control the cost of gas then he/she can control the price of a Big Mac. Unless an executive order is isissued to take over the cost. Wall Street does what they want. They set the price on everything.
