The big bear in the kitchen is the price of oil. The president must be prudent and calculating in his response to this situation so that the least damage is done to our economy and U. S. prestige. He can’t just run off at the mouth as Mr Romney has done as well as conservative commentators. Since 1979 the U.S. has tried to figure out how to deal with these people and had no success. I don’t see that changing.

First, stop arguing over how fast the US should intervene when Muslims are killing Muslims. We had people demanding that the President invade Iran, Egypt, Libya and now Syria because Muslims were killing Muslims. If the Muslims do not mind fellow Muslims killing their brothers, why on earth should the US care?

Now, if Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq etc, etc want to invade Syria to stop the slaughter, I would be open to providing intelligence info and satellite data to assist.

If some counties cannot, or will not, protect US embassies and consulates, then the State Department needs to advise those countries that the US cannot protect their embassies, consulates and UN missions in the US and they had best withdraw them.

This story, perceived or real insults to Islam, will continue and will result in the same pattern of behavior over the coming years. As each situation is different, an announced firm policy will not work. Each incident must be handled individually.

I think that going Rambo is the last thing we should do. I like the idea of cutting economic and military aid completely, then expelling their diplomats and if not that then at least cancel all visas from those countries into our country.Send them a message that they are not welcome if they are going to trash our embassies and kill our diplomats.

Other sanctions including blocking them in the IMF would be very serious and loss of most favorable nation status if any of them have that would also be devastating.

I would support a very targeted drone strike against the killers of our diplomats but that’s it as far as military action goes.

We need to expel the diplomats from the countries that refuse to honor established protocol of the host country protecting our diplomats. Send them packing and bring ours home. Cut off funds until the country involved assures us that they will protect our people regardless of the issue. Put live ammo in the weapons of the USMC guards at the embassies. Beef up the USMC contingent at all the ME embassies.

And as Tib points out, Obama could do the honorable thing and resign as he has lost control of foreign policy in the ME. Remember two or three days ago, he was grinning and poking fun at R/R, saying they were “new to foreign policy”, like he was the svengali in that area.

The administration was absolutely stupid (and Nixon-like) for redacting their records. Any subsequent gaffes by Obama are also not to be discounted.

It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s FIRST response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

Wake up, cons. Your guy is going to lose this election. And this desperate slimeball Limbaugh-like lie is not going to change that. Nor is tibs, nor anyone else’s pathetic, substantiveless, (is that a real word? LOL!) debunkedless (that one is not!) rebuttals.

J conservative pretty much nailed it at 12:38. While we have always sought to maintain or strengthen diplomatic ties to just about every country on earth, it is a different wold now. US embassies are extremely important for the variety of work they do that goes unnoticed. however, if our host country cannot provide some semblance of security ( not to mention their outright support for this riotous behavior) then we should have no choice but to suspend issuing visas and withdraw State staff. That or maintain a military force at each post so great that one may presume to have a new base in these countries.

Foreign relations is one subject for which Kyle is guaranteed to take leave of his God-given intelligence!

None of the options offered in his ”poll” is necessary and sufficient. All are needed options, but not all need to be done yesterday or even today. One thing that needs doing immediately is for Republican politicians to denounce the trash video that instigated the region-wide flare-up of anti-US demonstrations. Surely that video does not represent American values, not even Republican values.

Enraged mobs are best left to play out their outrage: they cannot be reasoned with or intimidated. The planned attack by militants on the US consulate in Libya must be investigated, with the assistance of the Libyan government, and the miscreants captured or killed. Over the long run, the new governments of the region need to be patiently encouraged and assisted to expand freedom and relieve poverty and ignorance. And Israel needs to solve its long-festering Palestinian problem.

Sounds like the present foreign policy, doesn’t it?

Republican politicians have nothing useful to contribute to the situation: their foreign policy of “bluster and blunder” has proved as ineffective as their domestic policy of “spend but don’t tax”.

There is no negotiating with these people or their neighbors. Libya has been a thorn in America’s side since 1801 when they were then known as the Barberry Pirates. They would capture our ships, hold our sailors for ransom or sell them into slavery. How did our President deal with it then? Jefferson sent battleships over there to blast their ships out of the sea and then we sent a contingent of Marines to take out Tripoli. “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.” Yep that’s where the song came from. Long story short were dealing with goat herders with guns. They only understand power and nothing else.

This kind of statement by L’il Aynie is a clear example of the mindset of a liberal. Note that the most important issue for this person is blaming the film as the problem – not Obama’s foreign policy, not radical Islam, not the poor security decisions made by Obama’s administration. Okay, I’ll bite. Say we take Aynie’s advice and keep “denouncing” this film. Any rational person would recognize that there are hundreds of other offensive films/writings/cartoons that would be next in line for these fanatics in the Middle East to get enraged about. Give me a break. This is such a straw man. We need to get to the bottom of this entire situation and find out why our facilities were so poorly guarded on the anniversary of 9-11, we need to find out why (and IF) our intel had no idea that this was coming, we need to find out why we didn’t have more backup from the government forces in the areas of the attacks, and we need to find out why Obama didn’t bother to go to any intelligence meetings in the week leading up to 9-11, which for the past decade has been a known red flag for possible terrorist activity. What should Obama’s response entail?

If we had the same information in hand as obama our responses would be better, Kyle. Senator Chambliss let us in on the fact that the Libyan attacks were not random happenstance. However, given obama’s lack of experience in foreign affairs his decisions fortunately will be based on the better foreign policy judgements and skills of those like Hilary Clinton who has to rely on before making a commitment to any particular actions.
Even with that kindness extended to obama, after reading a few excerpts from “Price of Politics” ~ by Bob Woodward and his interview with several people like Diana Sawyer, obama’s leadership abilities should seriously be called into question. As Woodward said aptly… Reagan and Clinton work able their will with the opposing party in power. obama has shown he cannot.

If you cannot work with your own countrymen in the face adversity how shall you work with people who are your known enemies in the face of terror?

There will need to be several actions taken on several levels, given the ongoing protests and violence in multiple countries. First, close down our embassies in those areas and allow for Americans to leave. Second, tell the governments they must crack down on the vandalism and protests immediately or all funding stops. Temporarily stop funding to show them you mean business and to compensate for the loss of property. However, continue a dialogue with the governments to restore order. Send in military (which the president had done) but make sure they have ammo. Address the issue before Congress and let Congress decide and authorize the president if this warrants a war action or distinct military action in these other countries. Perhaps use the drones to target bomb cities or countryside where massive protests are occurring or where these terroristic groups are. However, don’t hurt the government buildings if officials are helping us. Covertly find those responsible for the death in Libya (if not all in custody) and send our snipers to take care of them without any publicity until they are all dead. Push for those arrested to go on trial for war crimes. If we send in ground troops, which I am hesitant to do, it would have to be one massive show in each city with a lot of artillery and perhaps combined forces with British and German NATO forces (which might be plausible since their embassies were also bombed) to restore order, help local governments make arrests and get things under control. This shouldn’t be an act of war against those governments unless those governments do nothing to stop the riots.

My opinion is that he wanted to communicate his dismay that, having attained the highest office in an America with historical barriers to his race, that the life of an unarmed young black person could be taken, without any immediate legal sanction. That the so-called “post racial” America his election signaled to many, was lethally untrue to some.

For the ignorant ones on this blog- there is a small contingent of US troops in Egypt on the Sinai as peace keepers..pursuant to the peace treaty with Egypt. Had the Embassy no to tried to calm the
atmosphere about this right wing christian movie and the libel against jews as the sponsors, those troops would have been at risk.(remember 159 Marines killed as peace keepers in Lebanon). I am sure Romney considered all that before running his mouth.

They do these things not because there is any factual basis for their beliefs, but because their self identity is so strongly tied to the Republican party, that it would damage their fragile egos to admit the failures of that party. As a result, they project their own commitment to party over country onto everybody else. It is evidence of their deep down self-hate, much in the same way the loudest, harshest right wing haters of homosexuals are themselves gay. They criticize Obama as un-American, because deep down they know that THEY have become un-American, celebrating the death of Americans to prop up the party of their identity.

Some people could honestly think that. I wouldn’t go that far, but I also do believe that you can’t condemn someone and say you understand their position at the same time, which is the confusing position Obama taking. I would love to hear the administration saying that we have First Amendment Rights of free speech, and we’re proud of that, period. As long as our leader is trying to placate people’s feelings abroad, he stands a good chance of slighting his own country.

We’re still pretty early in this and those of us here really don’t know what’s going on, other than what we read which may be true or may not be. Initial reports often turn out to be wrong and/or get revised as things shake out.

I’d think a lot depends on how the Libyan government reacts. Not just saying the right things but do they make a real, honest effort to find these people and punish them? If they do, then it’d probably be just as well to let the Libyans punish them (with our vocal blessings) because they probably won’t treat them as nicely as we would. If the Libyans just give lip service to it (which I sort of doubt as it stands now) then our people needs to hunt them down and kill them, wherever they happen to be.

But I’m sure there’s all kinds of things going on that I’m not privvy, too.

Those goons in the protests in Libya have never known what free speech is all about. They have had someone else making decisions in their life since being born. It’s like explaining the Hubble Telescope to your pet lab. There is no negotiating with these people. There leadership remains smart, focused and determined, although biased, they are the power in all Muslim countries. They use religious fanaticism to maintain control of all of these sheep. Tht means that they are losing 50K/car, even before it is sold. The typical Volt buyer makes in excess of 170K/yr so the vehicle is not marketed to the “average” American. There used to be a 7.5K tax credit for the purchase of the car. Bozo Motors has now upped the tax credit to 10K. So, in addition to the 50K that GM is losing on each car, add 10K of American taxpayer money that the government will not collect in taxes. The initial goal of Bozo Motors was 40K cars/yr. To date, they have only sold 14K units…… in two years. This is another colossal clusterf**k that is costing us much more than it is saving us. What else can you expect from a cross between the peter principle, a community organizer and a Chicago thug?

I disagree completely. I can understand their outrage and absolutely condemn the way that outrage is expressed.

But let’s not forget the main point of this debate, which was Romney’ claim that the Administration sympathized with those who waged the attacks. He clearly was talking not about all the Muslims, who were insulted by the film, but about those waging the attack. And there was NEVER, EVER any expression of such sympathy. One more time, a big lie.

I disagree that the film is irrelevant, even while I agree that it was just a pretext to violence for a group of militants. But the widespread violence would not have happened without it.

I think most sane sensible people would say that these radicals attacking our embassies are overreacting to put it mildy. As Secretary Clinton implied, this film these characters are reacting to so violenty was poorly produced by a few sick religious bigots with whom the U.S. government or anyone hurt or killed had any association.
Niether the perputrators of the film or the perputrators of the resulting violence, both of whom should be put into a locked cage together and allowed to kill each other, thought through or care about the consequences of their actions.
If these zealots, so sensitive about anyone criticizing their concept of God, really want to take God’s perogative of retribution into their own hands, it seems that they would go after the actual bigots that created the film- not just any American individual or institution handy.
This brings up another point. Are these characters actually so super sensitive about anyone’s criticism of their religion, or are they Al Queada influenced individuals looking for an excuse to attack anything American?
How shouild we react? The Republicans pathetically blamed everything on the Administration without offering an explanation of what they would have done differently to anticipate this situation. I hope more responsible individuals will reassess the necessity of having a presence in some of these volatile areas, and in places where we need to be, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

So, should we quit criticizing Muslims? Should we just avoid “offending” them for fear of them shooting our diplomats? Should we quake in out boots when we think they might not like what we say about them? If they stone their women to death for having an extramarital affair, should we just look the other way? Granted, it is none of our business how they live their lives but it is none of their business how we live ours as well. This double standard is something that they do not understand and never will. Our freedoms to them are a pipe dream, a fairy tale. They wouldn’t know how to deal with them. No fanatic Muslim thinks on his own. He is controlled like a puppet. That’s the game. It has to be for the big wigs to maintain control. So, democracy is something that they will not know for generations, perhaps never. The “enlightened” Muslims that live in America, while still very devout, have had exposure to something else. But they are, for the most part, silent. Where are the condemnations from them for an American diplomat killed in an Muslim country? So far, nothing.

I do want to ask you, as a great lover of strong independent women, and a supporter of free birth control and abortion on demand, why do you not care about Muslim girls not being allowed to go to school, being sold to their husbands, not being allowed to show their face in public, being required to be covered from toe nail to hair in 100+ temperatures, being stoned to death when they are caught having sex outside marriage, not allowed to vote or drive, blah, blah.

Very dangerous indeed. I think your nominee needs to think hard on the words he uses and not fan the flames. I think this situation will calm down in a few days and they are learning about freedom on the Internet (they think our President could stop the video and he did request Youtube to look at it but they did not take it down) and tolerance of other opinions. They consider insulting Islam as a capital offense.They have a long way to go and we need patience but will not tolerate harming Americans. Our President made that clear and they will be brought to justice.

With very few differences, foreign policy hadn’t really changed much as far as the ME goes since the Carter administration, which I think we can ALL agree was a disaster. But toward the end of GWB’s years, and especially during Obama’s presidential campaign, it was stated SO strongly in the MSM how Obama’s more-diplomatic approach would result in so much of a different response from other nations. It was stated mercilessly that the reason that all these countries hated us was because of the policies of GWB and his ilk. The creme de la creme was when Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize…for having done…well…nothing…other than making speeches about how much more everyone should get along. The HOPE and CHANGE that were supposedly the inevitable result of his change in our stance regarding these nations drove the liberal media pundits to have thrills up their legs, etc.

And now, as the more conseravtive pundits predicted, the actions and hatred against the United States have NOT stopped. It HASN’T changed, at least not for the better. And in the meantime, these groups have continued to stake a larger claim of other European nations such as GB and France, who are struggling as well. The promise of HOPE and CHANGE–for the better–has NOT been realized. His power and ability to manipulate these other nations to hate us less is as empty as his qualifications for the Nobel Prize. Bare. Ass. Empty.

Even if these killings are not directly Mr. Obama’s fault–and for the purposes of avoiding useless argument, let’s say he is not–what they show is that his strategy hasn’t changed anything for the better. He’s been ineffective in bringing the change about. And so one of the major justifications for his rise to power turns out to be empty promise with unfulfilled result.

That is what we are saying.

The president should declare that his effort to engage the jihadists was a strategic error, and that as of today the policy of the United States will be to confront the jihadists wherever and whenever they are found. Not one of those proposals was included in the stimulus bill. At the health care summit in 2010, congressional Republicans suggested a variety of ways to improve the American health care system: for example competition through a national insurance marketplace, malpractice reform, and ending the tax penalty against individuals who buy insurance. Not one of those ideas was included in the health care bill.

For two years, the House Republicans have passed a budget that at the very least is an opening bid in a good-faith negotiation over spending and taxes. For two years, that budget has died in the Senate. The president says the House proposal is “antithetical to our entire history.” Then he castigates the Republicans for their “tendency to shoot first and aim later” and calls for civil debate.

This is the broken and anxiety-ridden world Barack Obama has made. Our adversaries are stronger. America and her allies are weaker. And yet, after spending practically a decade blaming every last thing, including the bad weather, on President Bush, the media seem determinedly uninterested in ascribing even the slightest amount of responsibility to President Obama.

Woodward’s book depicts a president confident in the power of his own ideas but ill-equipped to manage the complex negotiations necessary to achieve consensus among legislators, even those in his own party. Members of Congress come to the negotiating table already held hostage to the partisans and interest groups that dominate their parties and thus unmotivated to work together. And no one has much concern about the promises they made to get elected in the first place. All that matters is minimizing liabilities and gaining the upper hand politically.

There is a notable moment of timidity early in Obama’s presidency when he is meeting with Democratic Congressional leaders on health care reform. Around midnight, House and Senate leaders were unable to agree on specifics for a final bill. Frustrated, Obama snapped at the group, “None of you are listening … It is very clear there is nothing I can do to help you.” He left and went to bed. As the group began to head out, then-Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel went through the proposals from both sides, line by line, and created a framework for a compromise. This was a shocking revelation, the president walking out on his top legislative priority. He was eager to lead but unwilling to do the hard work of leadership.

This wasn’t the only instance of the administration’s complete abdication of responsibility. The Bowles-Simpson commission was little more than a delay tactic on deficit-reduction, and its final report was ignored by just about everyone. The administration’s strategy on deficit-reduction was to “gimmick it up,” in the words of Larry Summers, director of the White House National Economic Council….

I do know how he should not respond and that is, by limiting our FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT OF FREE SPEECH.
By seeking to condemn the maker of the film that was uncomplimentary to the muslims.
FREE SPEECH is the foundation of DEMOCRACY. As I understand it the law has already taken the film maker into custody or taken his property. Not the way to go, if this became acceptable procedure then everytime the muslims heard of some derogatory comments they would start an uprising. I do not know why the U.S. bothers with them at all.

How is that analogy relevant to my post? If anything, I see it in AGREEMENT with my post. We are saying that if you listened to the MSM talk about Mr. Obama prior to his coronation, it sounded like it would be SUCH a stark contrast to the GWB policies that it would end, or at minimum significantly diminish, the vitriol against the US that was attributed to GWB’s foreign policy. It’s been 3+ years now, and just like teeth in braces, even in a short period of time you should begin to see movement of the teeth in the direction that heads toward the objective. That kind of movement in international affairs is ABSENT! In fact, it could be argued–although I will not do it here–that the movement is in the WRONG direction. In either case, if you put braces on and the teeth start moving in the opposite direction or not at all after a bit of time, better reassess what kind of brackets and wires you aree using and look at how you’ve put them on, because leaving things as they are won’t cause teeth to move in the opposite direction that they initially move.

Is that what you were trying to say? If so, you are right.

You seem very well-grounded to me.

Some women get so hung up on the Christian doctrine that wives are to be submissive to their husbands. What they fail to see is that there is a flip side to that coin. Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Uh, that is an even BIGGER call, and one that few realize. However, there are some who do, and what is amazing is how much easier it is to submit yourself to someone who genuinely loves you to the point of sacrificing themselves totally for your benefit, because they love you. But it is amazing when we accept the roles that God has designed us for how well a marriage can work. Certainly not without effort. But your time together does give testimony to the success of those principles when properly attempted. There is something very empowering about living your role(s) to its/their potential that can only be understood and experienced fully by those who devote themselves to it.

If the majority of 1 billion plus people wanted do to harm to non Muslims, this world would be up in flames; literally.

Well, there are a few embassies aflame! Maybe they just lack training, planning, and weapons, do you know? All I know is, what I hear the vocal ones shout, “death to America”, “death to the West”.
What the silent majority think is anyone’s guess.

I agree with most of what you said in your in your 11:14am, however, our nation and most of all our leaders really need to understand that radical Islam is committed to our destruction in anyway they can achieve their objective. I think by now we have more than sufficient evidence that radical Islam encompasses most of the Muslim world. Unfortunately, our adversaries go beyond the Muslim world. We have Russia, China, the N.K. and even some South American countries who’re not our friends by any means. The times we’re now living in is far more dangerous for our nation than the cold war or even the two previous World Wars we fought.

The “nut jobs” never ran $1.5 trillion deficits even once, much less four years in a row. They never had 8% unemployment, much less 43 months in a row. It took them eight years to add $5 trillion to the debt–Obozo did it in less than four. The credit rating was the highest possible for eight years–not any more. And there were a whole lot fewer folks on the dole while the “nut jobs” were in office.
