Poll Position: How should Obama respond to embassy attacks?

The big story this week was the series of attacks on U.S. embassies across the Middle East and North Africa: from Libya, where our ambassador was killed, to Egypt, Yemen and, today, Tunisia and Sudan. In Libya, the government is cooperating with the investigation into the murders of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The responses from the other countries have been mixed, but they have been rather tepid on the whole.

How should Obama respond to the attacks on our embassies?

  • Cut foreign aid (255 Votes)
  • Pursue the killers in Libya; otherwise, lie low (173 Votes)
  • Stop issuing travel visas for people from those countries (130 Votes)
  • Bomb 'em (108 Votes)
  • Economic sanctions (106 Votes)
  • Too soon to say (102 Votes)
  • Cut diplomatic ties (91 Votes)
  • Increase foreign aid (5 Votes)

President Obama made a mistake Wednesday evening when he said of the Egyptian government, which has been in place less than three months, “I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy.” It was a mistake because the White House on Thursday had to walk back the statement; later Thursday, the State Department had to walk back the walk back, clarifying that Egypt retains the official designation of Major Non-NATO Ally it has held since 1989.

But this post isn’t about criticizing Obama for shooting first and aiming later. (OK, maybe it’s a little bit about that.) It’s really about the question most of us have been pondering since the attacks in Libya and Egypt on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of 9/11: What is the proper response?

Some of you took my first post on the subject to imply a military action is needed. As I tried to make clear in the comments, that’s not the case. Things would have to spiral much further out of control before we were talking about military action.

Unless, of course, you include drone flights and a possible targeted strike on the terrorists responsible for the ambassador’s death, which the Obama administration appears to be considering at the very least.

Otherwise, there are a range of options here. We could pull our diplomats from their capitals. We could expel their diplomats from Washington. We cut cut or eliminate foreign aid to these countries. We could, I suppose, increase our foreign aid to them and use it to promote and educate them about our laws and values (such as freedom of expression). We could officially remove them from our list of allies. We could stop issuing travel visas from their country to ours. We could impose some form of economic sanctions. Or we could essentially do nothing more than pursue the people who killed Stevens and the other Americans.

What should Obama’s response entail? That’s this week’s Poll Position question. Answer in the nearby poll — NOTE: unlike most of my polls, you can select more than one answer in this one — and the comments thread below.

And Fred, as far as pigeonholing goes, hard to do that when I don’t know where you are coming from. I haven’t been on this blog long enough to remember everyone’s typical positions. I will say getalife is a definite exception to that. It’s very clear where he/she comes from.

The only things I knew from your post we’re these: 1. You disagreed with part of my argument, and it was unclear as to what part, since you invoked an analogy which supported my post instead of not supporting it. 2. You tried to use an analogy about which I’m well-educated on being able to understand. I have no idea how much of your life you have given to studying and learning about orthodontics, but by your use of the very enlightened term “crooked ass teeth,” I think it’s safe to say that orthodontics may not be your forte. 3. You have little knowledge on how to go about moving teeth orthodontically or the concepts which drive those processes, otherwise, if you had any debate sense whatsoever, you would have been smart enough not to try to use that as an illustration in support of your position. You may be a smart guy, but this clearly could not have been your most intelligent debate tactic.

In summary, you made an unclear, poorly constructed attempt at communicating your disagreement with my post which didn’t even make clear what the disagreement was.

So like I said, if you’d like to step it back and choose a different way to voice your disagreement with my original post, it would be welcome and would do your argument a wealth of good as well. Or you can continue your vitriol, but that won’t help your case in the eyes of those who might actually be swayed by the debate. Like I said before, if all you’re trying to do is upset me, I’ll go ahead and let you try while I continue to let those who are seeking truth judge our arguments by both their merits and how we conduct ourselves on here.

Show me any regulars on this blog (with the exception of Hillbilly Deluxe and myself) who judge ANY position on any other factor than the devotion to their own preconceived hard left/right wing policies.

I would include you. You are more concerned debating the meaning of the word “is” than you are conceding the obvious point of my original post. The point was that in the short time that the President HAS been President, it was way to soon to jump to the conclusions that you made in your post. I used the tooth thing because you are a dentist and I thought it would be easy for someone with a willingness towards discussion to SEE that point. I still maintain that. I think despite your now passive aggressive attempts at “listening” you have no desire at all to exchange ideas.

Fred,

You said:

Ok, so in the two weeks since you’ve put those braces on little Johnny Joe’s teeth his mom has been using a pair of pliers to adjust them herself. You see, as soon as you said Johnny Joe needed braces SHE said he didn’t and she would do all in her power to assure that those braces didn’t last two weeks.

A. No one needs braces. I would never say that. Unless, of course, I had already learned that the patient (or their parent) had a desire to have straight teeth. (Not everyone does, BTW, as your own teeth testify.) No one that I know of has ever died from not having orthodontic tooth movement. I don’t start a case until the first payment is made and informed consent has been obtained, so if mom doesn’t want straight teeth, there is no case to begin with. So this is a REALLY bad analogy. In fact, doing orthodontic treatment on a child without first obtaining informed consent front the parent or legal guardian is technically assault. So, that being the case, your analogy actually suggests that Dr. Obama ’s foreign policy is an assault on the United States. Is that what you are trying to say?

B. So wait, was your issue that there wasn’t enough time to finish? Well, since the average orthodontic case lasts roughly 2 years, I suppose since a presidential term takes four, for a proper analogy, since Obama is three quarters of his way through his term, the analogous time allotment for orthodontic treatment would be about 18 months or so, instead of 2 weeks, right? So if you had had braces on a case for 18 months, and hadn’t seen any progress (or worse, if you saw the teeth getting MORE crooked), wouldn’t you think that you might want to rethink what you are doing and either bail and let someone else who knows better handle the case or else AT MINIMUM debracket and start over? Wouldn’t you agree that aniy doctor who has his head on straight would have wanted to see positive results long before 18 months into the case?

My advice? Say nothing about what you are going to do…Buy/cultivate precise information, then devise a plan to target actual participants…Say nothing about it until after they are taken care of….

Lets be clear…. The U.S. should not be in this situation…… This is a clear foreign policy/intelligence screw up…. Some people in the Obama Administration need to be fired. We know, and the terrorists know, Obama has no desire to put hunter/killer teams on the ground anywhere in an election year. Its what he should do in Libya, but only after good intel is acquired, and that won’t happen until after Nov….. These things can take some time………..

The older you start, the longer it tends to take. The bone isn’t as malleable. Glad to hear you are happy. I think most people who do it end up happy. Not all, but most.

The point is we were in such a mess that we are doing well to be as far recovered as we are now. Don’t think, – as Bill Clinton said – that anyone could have done any better.
And the GOP was doing their best to make Obama – and therefore America – fail. They stated their number one priority was to make Obama fail and not get re-elected. They number one priority was not to recover from the recession, or to protect national security, or to furnish jobs, but to make the president fail.
I call that treason.

It is difficult (but I will try) to take that statement very seriously, when THE most basic, fundamental step in keeping the fiscal house in some kind of order is to actually have a budget. Now I realize that there were a LOT of differences and drastic differences in what the two sides Wanted the budget to look like. But the process of negotiating a budget begins with the house. Then, the senate is supposed to make their changes (assuming they are ideologically opposed to the House, which is currently the case) and the negotiations continue until we get a budget. It was not the Republican-controlled house that failed to continue the dialogue. It was the Democratically-controlled senate. Mr. Reid and company are the ones who have failed to do THE most basic fiscally necessary task. Of course, Mr. Obama made a couple of pretty feeble attempts that we so symbolic-only that not even one congressperson would vote for it, even one from his ideological side.

Mr. Clinton, despite my differences with his stance on many issues, EVEN WITH BOTH HOUSES CONTROLLED BY THE OPPOSING PARTY was still able to get budgets passed. I think that Mr. Clinton wasn’t being truthful. He was politicking when he made that statement.

There may be some truth to what you are saying as far as resistance goes. Fair enough. But to also be fair, the liberals in the legislature have been the ones who have repeatedly just picked up their toys and gone home when it comes to fisca responsibility, and there has been little to no leadership from Mr. Obama to say–just get it done. Reagan was able to do it. Bush I was able to get it done, even at the cost of a second term. Clinton was able to do it. As hated as he was–and you know there was at least as much toward him as there is towards Mr. Obama–GWB got it done with the legislative houses switching positions. Still got it done.

Your statement that it couldn’t have been done better ignores history. It ignores the fact that when these disagreements occurred, that the president would work with both parties to find a way to get even something as fiscally basic as a budget done. And as anyone who has run a business well knows, financial stability STARTS with having a plan on paper. There is none, and our spiraling debt and lower standard of living i.e. lower wages and higher costs for many of the commodities is a predictable result when there is no plan in place.

Can you at least be honest and give our leader (or at least the Democratically controlled senate) a healthy portion of the blame for our continued decline?

Obama should have backed up the Iranian protesters in 2009. The “Arab Spring” movement started in Iran, and Obama did nothing to help keep the movement going. Once the ruthless Iranian government saw Obama would do nothing to help the protesters they crushed them. This began a pattern of silence that escalated to Egypt, Libya, and beyond.
How should Obama respond now? He should admit he failed when it counted in 2009 and resign and let others begin a new approach. The boy king has a failed foreign policy, just like he has failed with the economy.

Their significance became obvious when just after the regime fell in November 2011, rebel forces foisted the flag of al-Qaida over the courthouse in Benghazi.

Did Stevens understand what this meant? His boss, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, certainly didn’t. Following Tuesday’s attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Clinton said, “Today, many Americans are asking – indeed, I asked myself – how could this happen? How could this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save from destruction? This question reflects just how complicated and, at times, how confounding the world can be.”

Clinton, the bewildered stewardess of US foreign policy, then proclaimed with utter certainty that there is nothing to be concerned about.

Of course, what she failed to mention was that after the rebels felled Gaddafi’s regime – with US support – they began imposing Islamic law over large swathes of the country.

“And the GOP was doing their best to make Obama – and therefore America – fail.”

So very tiring to keep reading this crap.

For his first two years, he could pass (and did) everything he wanted.

And. It. Didn’t. Work.
