Poll Position: How should Obama respond to embassy attacks?

The big story this week was the series of attacks on U.S. embassies across the Middle East and North Africa: from Libya, where our ambassador was killed, to Egypt, Yemen and, today, Tunisia and Sudan. In Libya, the government is cooperating with the investigation into the murders of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The responses from the other countries have been mixed, but they have been rather tepid on the whole.

How should Obama respond to the attacks on our embassies?

  • Cut foreign aid (255 Votes)
  • Pursue the killers in Libya; otherwise, lie low (173 Votes)
  • Stop issuing travel visas for people from those countries (130 Votes)
  • Bomb 'em (108 Votes)
  • Economic sanctions (106 Votes)
  • Too soon to say (102 Votes)
  • Cut diplomatic ties (91 Votes)
  • Increase foreign aid (5 Votes)

Total Voters: 517

President Obama made a mistake Wednesday evening when he said of the Egyptian government, which has been in place less than three months, “I don’t think that we would consider them an ally, but we don’t consider them an enemy.” It was a mistake because the White House on Thursday had to walk back the statement; later Thursday, the State Department had to walk back the walk back, clarifying that Egypt retains the official designation of Major Non-NATO Ally it has held since 1989.

But this post isn’t about criticizing Obama for shooting first and aiming later. (OK, maybe it’s a little bit about that.) It’s really about the question most of us have been pondering since the attacks in Libya and Egypt on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of 9/11: What is the proper response?

Some of you took my first post on the subject to imply a military action is needed. As I tried to make clear in the comments, that’s not the case. Things would have to spiral much further out of control before we were talking about military action.

Unless, of course, you include drone flights and a possible targeted strike on the terrorists responsible for the ambassador’s death, which the Obama administration appears to be considering at the very least.

Otherwise, there are a range of options here. We could pull our diplomats from their capitals. We could expel their diplomats from Washington. We cut cut or eliminate foreign aid to these countries. We could, I suppose, increase our foreign aid to them and use it to promote and educate them about our laws and values (such as freedom of expression). We could officially remove them from our list of allies. We could stop issuing travel visas from their country to ours. We could impose some form of economic sanctions. Or we could essentially do nothing more than pursue the people who killed Stevens and the other Americans.

What should Obama’s response entail? That’s this week’s Poll Position question. Answer in the nearby poll — NOTE: unlike most of my polls, you can select more than one answer in this one — and the comments thread below.

Fred @ 6:10,

Are you really going to let one word said tongue-in-cheek lower your discourse to that? Look, I didn’t start with the crooked teeth analogy. You did. I noticed you didn’t even attempt to continue to try and ride that analogy further, once I helped you realize that it wouldn’t meet your objectives, but rather weakened your argument. Perhaps in the future you shouldn’t use analogies which are pretty clearly within the expertise of your debate opponent, so you aren’t forced to drag the debate down as you have attempted. Not going to engage. We’ll just assume, since you couldn’t make the analogy fly on its merits that you’ve learned your lesson, and we’ll move on. You’re welcome.

And you should try adding a little tongue-in-cheek humor to the discussion sometimes. It makes these debates much more lively and fun! Especially if the tongue-in-cheek humor is about the ideas and not about the opponent, him- or herself. You should try it! It’ll make you a better debater, and earn you more respect, even in the face of disagreement.

Absolutely in agreement with other posters here. You allude to a mistake by Obama… it’s actually a little scary that the US MSM cannot even recognize subtle diplomacy when they see it! His “mistake” was actually a very subtle yet clear message to Morsi. And EFFECTIVE it was – the next day Morsi gave a speech condemning the violence .. .which has now stopped in Egypt. Seems to me that that signals that we may indeed be developing an effective relationship with Morsi. As to Libya – Obama is working with their new government to find the culprits – and I’m sure he will be effective at that as well. It’s a sad and scary situation – made sadder by the fact that apparently major news outlets of the United States are so dummbed down by neocon chest thumping that they don’t even recognize real diplomacy when they see it. God help us!

For whatever reason, Secretary Clinton chose to double down on misleading the American people. “Libyans carried Chris’s body to the hospital,” said Mrs. Clinton. That’s one way of putting it. The photographs at the Arab TV network al-Mayadeen show Chris Stevens’s body being dragged through the streets, while the locals take souvenir photographs on their cell phones. A man in a red striped shirt photographs the dead-eyed ambassador from above; another immediately behind his head moves the splayed arm and holds his cell-phone camera an inch from the ambassador’s nose. Some years ago, I had occasion to assist in moving the body of a dead man: We did not stop to take photographs en route. Even allowing for cultural differences, this looks less like “carrying Chris’s body to the hospital” and more like barbarians gleefully feasting on the spoils of savagery.

It was difficult to decide what to excerpt. Perhaps you should read it all.

Obama and Hillary knew this because they are part of the evil. Both Obama and Hillary are traitors. They both support Muslim Terrorist groups like the PLO, Hamas, Hezbullah, and the Muslim Brotherhood. In FACT under this disgraceful corrupt President and Secretary of State and his administration they have given away almost 4 Billion taxpayers dollars to these groups. Not counting our money in the IMF or UN. Liberal idiots like AmVet and others are too stupid and blinded by the obama kool-aid to understand this. Remember Obama’s state of the union speech when he promised another 920 million dollars to these groups. When we freed Libya, Egypt, Yemen the Obama administration gave them more money to rebuild their economies and cities. When will you jack a$$es get mad about this. This is real money that could have been used to help our own Nation instead of the enemy’s. Obama is a MUSLIM TERRORIST (my opinion). Both Hillary and Barry are Communist.

getalife should be working for obama making up more lies and excuses for him. romney had the sensible response to this mess and the media tried to run him over—the tape of them preparing their questions to keep repeating “did you jump the gun” clearly shows they are in obama’s corner and are not to be trusted. obama’s staff and his “media” tried for several days to portray this as a viral video problem rather than a radical muslem problem— the media also failed to focus on the press coverage of the democratic convention which kept on touting osama’s killing (20 some odd times during the convention) just prior to the sept. 11 anniversary. they also failed to tell the people of the usa all of the stuff that went on prior to that embassy attack. obama had about as much to do with killing osama as i did—not too difficult to make that call. So far this administration has only succeeded in putting people in power in the middle east that are anti-america —but that was to be expected after all the bowing and apologizing.

I noticed you didn’t even attempt to continue to try and ride that analogy further, once I helped you realize that it wouldn’t meet your objectives, but rather weakened your argument.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

First off, it wasn’t a word said tongue in cheek. Man up and admit to what you say and think, it’s all here in print Doctor, don’t be a Del. You used cheap talk radio bumper sticker talk (nod nod wink wink). When you do THAT you show a decided lack of original thought. As to the tooth analogy, I never pursued it because it was clear that you lacked the basic knowledge to go there. You did the old Republican/George Bush thing. You made a statement/action and declared mission accomplished.

I realize that people with a mouth full of your hands and instruments aren’t’ exactly good practice for polishing up your debating skills but just damn. Really? I guess you call mission accomplished there as well and if that doesn’t work just up the flow of the nitrous oxide…………

But IF you are telling me that you can take a set of teeth and in two weeks of braces set them right then you are either a liar or one really bad dentist. THAT is all you “proved.” There is nothing tongue in cheek about THAT.

Use facts, not bumper sticker phrases. Try thinking for yourself not relying on Neal Boortz to do your thinking for you. I’m NOT a Republican and trite little phrases and then calling victory don’t cut it here sport.

Try again. That is IF you have something of substance to say. Or you could be like Del and call me a piece of crap without REALLY calling me that because he likes that passive aggressive stuff and won’t man up.

I would prefer you use some intelligence, FACTS and logic. If you can’t then you are no more than a slogan spouting waste of time.

We all make fools of ourselves on occasion, tripping over small things and then overreacting to them. This phenomenon happens much more frequently when our arguments are weak. No president has escaped from terrorist attacks. Let me remind you of this horror while Reagan, the holy saint of the GOP , was president.

1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, by Lebanese terrorists supported and directed by Iran. The attack, which killed 241 American servicemen (220 Marines, 16 Navy personnel, and 3 Army soldiers), was the deadliest single-day death toll for the Marines since the World War II battle of Iwo Jima and the deadliest for the U.S. military since the 1968 Tet offensive in Vietnam. The suicide truck bombing, along with a similar bombing that day that killed 58 French paratroopers, was perpetrated by the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah (“Party of God”), which was created, supported, and directed by Iran.

Libyans See al Qaeda Hand in Embassy Attack

“The head of Libya’s new national congress has blamed al Qaeda-linked militants for planning Tuesday’s deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, raising further questions about the motive behind the mayhem that killed four Americans.

U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal on Friday that they are investigating indications that a local group of Libyan militants, Ansar al Sharia, held a series of conversations Tuesday with al Qaeda extremists about the assault that day on the consulate, in the first sign of possible coordination in the attack between local fighters and the global terrorist movement.

“I think this was al Qaeda,” Mr. Magarief said in the interview. “If you take into account the weapons used, like RPGs and other heavy weapons, it proves that it was preplanned. It’s a dirty act of revenge that has nothing to do with religion.”

Just remember who disengaged with ideas first. I still said a lot of things in my post other than that one word. You only diverted because of one word and didn’t address any of the ideas.

You obviously didn’t read any of the substance of my post. In two weeks, you should already be seeing teeth beginning to move in the right direction. If you see them moving in the OPPOSITE direction to the objective, time to debracket and start over and rethink your case. You obviously have made a serious error in attempting orthodontic movement, so either get educated on how to do it, or just stor trying and do something else and let those of us who know what we are doing do it for you. It’s not the end of the world, though. You just get rid of the problem and start over. Simple.

Who is Neal Boortz?

Of course you are welcome to continue back on a civil, ideas-based debate anytime you are ready. Just to refresh your memory, you had just had your crooked ass teeth analogy handed back to you. Otherwise, nothing says “mission accomplished” more than ideological surrender of the opponent. Since no more ideas seem to be coming, we’ll move on.

Oh so NOW you are ready to discuss things. Ok. Using the analogy in two weeks you CAN see if things are going right or wrong…….. maybe. Since braces are a process which take YEARS two weeks, as you well know isn’t enough time to to determine anything. But let’s pretend it is.

Ok, so in the two weeks since you’ve put those braces on little Johnny Joe’s teeth his mom has been using a pair of pliers to adjust them herself. You see, as soon as you said Johnny Joe needed braces SHE said he didn’t and she would do all in her power to assure that those braces didn’t last two weeks.

How effective are those braces now? Can you be intellectually honest enough to go with me here, or are you just a hard core right wing fanatic.

Oh and don’t EVEN try to pretend you don’t know who Neal Bootz is. The only thing I hate worse than fools is liars. Your credibility is already low as you are a Baptist, don’t ruin it further.
