I’m not going to lie: I have a hard time writing about 9/11.
This is (for the most part) a political blog, but politics seems like a very small topic for a day like today. 9/11 is a messy day, not just because it’s still full of sorrow and anger for so many people who lost loved ones that day or any of the hard days that followed, but because still it is not a closed case.
On a micro level, there are still discoveries, such as the note that a Connecticut man dropped from a window on the 84th floor of Two World Trade Center that day, and which reached his family just before last year’s decennial remembrance, and which finally made it into the press this week. A fresh wound for them and, albeit on a much smaller scale, for the rest of us, too.
On a macro level, there’s a war in Afghanistan that began shortly thereafter and continues to this day. There are still tens of thousands of Americans fighting in that war, being shot at by our enemies and our alleged friends. Their mission, their fate, are still deathly important to them and their families, and should be to the rest of us, too. But to talk about those things today feels off-putting, because it invariably means diving into the politics involved in making decisions about the war and thus getting away from the unity of the day, and it feels cheap, because it’s too easy to talk about those things today and ignore them for the other 364.25 days of the year. (I am far too guilty of that myself.)
On a personal level, I feel like most people are out of things to say by now, myself included. I was working in a carpet mill that day, a month away from starting my job with the Associated Press, and didn’t even hear about the attacks until someone from the office part of the building told me in the break room at lunchtime. I still didn’t comprehend what had happened for another four hours, when I finally got a chance to see a television and the images of what had happened and was still happening, images and events that were nearly impossible to imagine before 9/11 and impossible to forget ever since.
What I remember most is the visceral reaction I and everyone else had, and that was best captured by people who spent that day capturing it instead of shuttling rugs around a mill. To this day, I prefer re-reading what was written then to almost anything written more recently. If you’ve never read Dan McLaughlin’s eyewitness account from back then, today’s the day to read it. For a longer treatment, Tom Junod’s 2009 exploration of the “falling man” photograph is haunting. Feel free to share others in the comment thread.
And feel free to share your own memories and thoughts, even the political ones. Heck, this is still a mostly free country. Just because I had to get this off my chest before getting on with the rest of my day doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

Had just walked into work that day. Remember the receptionist saying that a plane had hit WTC.
I figured it was a small plane and an accident and went about my day. Then I heard another plane had hit. Tried to get on cnn.com and couldnt. Site was down.
Thats when I knew something was up.
Can recall the incredible anger I felt most of the rest of that day and through the night.
Thank god we finally got out of Irag and Osama bin Laden ( the mastermind behind 9/11) is dead.

I just hope 9/11 remains a day of remembrance for everyone.
To remember the horror of the terrorist actions and the external (and internal) threats we face.
For the feelings and thoughts we had in the months after 9/11.
To remember all the lives lost that day, normal people with families.
And for the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces after.
9/11 will fade over time and become more history than memory. But I hope not yet.
Too many people have suffered from, and sacrificed for, 9/11 to be written off already.

If W’s admin hadn’t been so totally caught off guard and then violently embarrassed by the fact they missed the boat, America probably wouldn’t have so totally collectively lost it’s marbles.
They were so embarrassed they sent this country reeling – color alerts moving up and down depending on the severity of W’s latest scandal, waterboarding, Gitmo, removing shoes at the airport, wire tapping civilians.

Our President crushed this small gang and took out their leadership.
He did not use politics of fear, he took action and focused on the enemy.
Instead of attacking him, the cons should praise these actions.

the administration’s level of inaction was so negligent that senior intelligence officials actually considered resigning, so as not to be in a position of responsibility when the attack took place:</i?
Officials at the Counterterrorism Center of the C.I.A. grew apoplectic. On July 9, at a meeting of the counterterrorism group, one official suggested that the staff put in for a transfer so that somebody else would be responsible when the attack took place, two people who were there told me in interviews. The suggestion was batted down, they said, because there would be no time to train anyone else.

Over 2900 American civilians died that day and our president and his national security advisor were warned and lied about what they knew. Then our president read “My Pet Goat” while our country was being attacked. That’s what I remember. See article below of Tenet’s warnings to Condi, her distraction with other neocon priorities and what she failed to do when warned.

I was in lockdown with eight special needs kids that day. I couldn’t help but look to their innocence for comfort, wondering what the future held for them.
This is what I choose to remember about September 11, 2001:
While tragedy unfolded, life continued. It’s estimated that over 10,000 families in the United States welcomed a new baby into the world on September 11, 2001.

Bush’s biggest mistake pre 9/11 was that he was still stuck ( much like Romney ) in a cold war way of thinking about foreign threats.
One of his biggest priorities pre 9/11 was the National Missile Defense system. Its what he and Rumsfeld wanted badly.

This is a political blog, but what we need least today is to blame anybody in this country for the tragedy of 9/11. As far as I know nobody has ever presented evidence that any action of any American would have absolutely prevented it, or that inaction of somebody who should have acted was a unique and definite cause of it happening.

Beautiful day in NYC, but it was raining here in Atlanta. I was in inside sales with IBM at the time, and my boss, Cruella DeVille, insisted that we continue to make outbound sales calls to clients and prospects, as if ANYONE in the world wanted to discuss AS/400 hardware at noon on 9/11/01.
The internet crashed because the traffic was higher than ever, and about two dozen IBM’ers stood around a radio listening to AM750, trying to get updates.
What a terrible day.

What dismays me is that our government did not react appropriately, or very effectively, to the attack.
There was the understandable need to ‘do something’, but going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan missed the mark and did not get to the root of the problem. 9/11 was a criminal terrorist action, not a military one. The bad guys reportedly are situated across the globe. The way you eradicate a threat of that nature is with surgical incursions like the Navy Seal op that took out OBL, not by re-fighting World War II.

First, it is disgusting that anyone would put a political attack on a day like today, on a blog which began on such a serious and thoughtful note. You SHOULD be ashamed of yourselves, but I don’t think that is possible with those that are doing so.
To Kyle’s column, I was at home that morning, and thankfully no longer traveling in a job that used to require a lot of air travel. Found out about 30 minutes after the first plane hit that my nephew was working and studying in the WTC area while in college, and waited frantically for hours to finally hear that he was safe and sound.
Haven’t flown since, and barring some family emergency, never will again. The over-reaction of so-called Homeland Security is not my cup of tea.

I agree about Muslims celebrating. It was rare, both here and abroad.
When we see Muslims burning the US flag or burning our presidents in effigy, keep in mind that is the equivalent of them seeing a film of a clan rally burning a cross. They are ignorant extremists, and in the great minority.
Footage of a dozen arabs laughing and dancing in the streets on 9/11 set back US-Muslim relations 20 years, and it is a shame.
It is similar to when the media reports on a hurricane. They will find a wind-tunnel between two buildings to exagerrate the ferocity of the wind. They do it because shock footage attracts viewers. Don’t let media footage of anything determine your opinion on any issue. Think for yourself.

I thought the images of Palestinians dancing in the streets were deplorable and inexcusable. But it wasn’t so much a Muslim reaction as much as a nationalistic reaction by a group of people who despise both Israel and their closest ally, the United States. I sat all workday next to my friend and colleague of over ten years, a Sunni Muslim with a very long name but who we all called “Alee.” I assure you he’s a loyal, patriotic American and he was as shocked and saddened by the events of 09/11 as anyone. Just a few decades ago Christians rounded up about 6 million Jews and slaughtered them in concentration camps. No religion has a monopoly on good or bad behavior.

Kyle thanks for taking this time for remembrance of those innocent non-combatant lives lost 11 years ago today.
I had just dropped my wife off at her office and I was returning to mine when the news came over the radio. Instead of going into my office I drove home and turned on the television. Couldn’t believe the re-runs of those Twin Towers being hit and the people in the streets. The country united in the aftermath of 9-11 but it didn’t last very long.

The week before 9/11 I was in New York. Busy week, had lunch at Windows on the World and at the time didn’t really think twice about it. Now I still have flashbacks.
On 9/11 was a Tuesday. Normally I commuted to Boca on Monday’s but because I had been travelling for a couple of weeks I went on Tuesday that week. I boarded at around 6:20am and we hit ground in Fort Lauderdale a little after 8 am. By the time I got to the rental car the radio had the news that a plane had hit the Tower…my first thought was one of those little one engine sightseeing planes had gotten too close and clipped the Tower. Then in a few minutes the second hit occurred and I remember thinking how surreal this was.
Got to the office and the TV was on and that’s when I found out what the scope was and also that we had two employees in the building. We did not find out they were safe until after the buildings came down. When that happened I was on a conference call with some of our Board. Their office was on Madison Ave and from their window they had an eyewitness view…damn spooky.
I went to NY 10 days later…I remember looking at the skyline coming in and thinking how weird it was. I still think that everytime I go.
For the next six months I was in crisis management mode as the event had a significant impact on our business so I didn’t do much reflecting. But since then I have.
I have never made the leap to say that The Bush Administration should have prevented the attacks but they certainly missed opportunity after opportunity to do so. I can’t say they were negligent but they were damn sure incompetent.
As for the aftermath, it is hard to imagine a poorer overall performance by an Administration. Everything from mismanaging our response to knee jerk Patriot Acts to Cowboy bluster to actually torturing Prisoners of War.
I morn the lives lost that day but what we really lost was our perspective as a nation…a perspective we have not since recaptured.

“”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”"If any one person was responsible to prevent the 9/11attacks, it was the National Security Advisor, Condi Rice. She told the 9/11 Commission and the 9/11 Widows that the “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US” memo did not warn of upcoming attacks. The memo warned of preparations for hijackings and planned attacks inside the USA with explosives. The widows came to call her “Kindaliesalot Rice”.
The widows gave the 9/11 Commission 300 questions. They only got 27 answers. They gave Condi 65 questions and got 7 answers.
On July 10, 2001, CIA director George Tenet and Richard Blee warned Condi that al Qaeda attacks were coming in the next few weeks. Later they said that if she had acted on those warnings, 9/11 might have been prevented. Cofer Black said “The only thing we didn’t do was pull the trigger to the gun we were holding to her head.”
There were also warnings from 13 foreign countries, and 3 FBI offices. The UK, Germany, Italy, and Egypt specifically warned of aircraft as weapons. Russia warned of suicide pilots. Jordan and the Cayman Islands warned of attacks involving airlines. France, the UAE, Taliban, India, Morocco, and Argentina also warned. Israel warned of 19 terrorists inside the USA planning something big, and even named at least 4 of the alleged hijackers.
The video also provides support for the report in the German press that the August 6 PDB was actually 11-1/2 pages long, not the 1-1/2 pages we have been shown.

More on topic:
My wife called me at work and told me an airplane had been hijacked and crashed into a building. Since my workplace is very near Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, I wondered if my building would be next. For the next couple of hours, I had one eye on my work and the other looking out the windows. Then my co-workers and I got orders to evacuate the building and go home. I didn’t have to hear that twice. Just before getting home, I stopped at a day-care place to check on my son. He was fine, but the receptionist asked me if I wanted to take him home. Since I didn’t have a car seat for him, that should have been an instant “no,” but I was so rattled, I needed a minute or so to figure out whether to take him with me. Finally I said I would come back later for him. A few minutes later, I saw my wife. She had NEVER before been so happy to see me safe.

I don’t remember any rain in Atlanta on 9-11. In fact, I went to tennis practice, and when my husband showed up and informed us that the first tower had collapsed, we all left the court in a state of shock. We tried to decide if we should try to shield our four-year-old from the news, but there was really no way to do it; the story was everywhere all the time. I had nightmares off and on for weeks. One really sobering incident happened to me later that year. I’m a court reporter and had a witness show up to a deposition with a small child (which is not at all kosher for that setting). I made the best of it and did my best to redirect the child every time they’d come over and touch my steno machine. After the deposition the witness apologized for the child being there and told us that both her parents had been killed in the WTC. Boy, did I feel bad about all the irritation I had been feeling. Gave me a new perspective for sure. Prayers today for all those affected by that terrible attack.

I can remember preparing to go to work at United Airlines when I turned on the news and saw Tower 1 in flames! Told my co-worker…”I know where ONE of them is!” From that point, air travel has not been the same! 25,000 people lost their jobs two weeks ;ater; many have yet to recover from what happened!
What really hurts is the good will from the rest of the world that this nation wasted! If our leaders had taken that good will to go after OBL rather than Saddam, we would have taken another step towards peace….and the US would have garnered a greater deal of respect!!

Cairo (CNN) — Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and hauled down the American flag, replacing it with a black standard with Islamic emblems, apparently in protest of the production of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.
The incident prompted a volley of warning shots to be fired as a large crowd gathered outside, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene.
The replacement flag read, “There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger.”

@Kyle…the 9/11 report clearly details multiple warning that were ignored by the Bush Administration including those from Clinton, Clarke, Pavitt, and Tenet. The Report further concludes that “the system was blinking red” and that “an al Qaeda attack was imminent”.
As I said before the Bush Administration might not have been negligent but they were damn sure incompetent. It is not so much that they failed to stop the attack as it is they failed to have even a high level principals meeting until September at Bush’s ranch. It the systems is “blinking red” a competent Administration DOES SOMETHING! They may fail but they act.

Well, there have been some very wise and wonderful posts here today. Kyle gave us his honest review and others here have told us of both the sadness of loss and the joy of finding loved ones not lost.
I seem to have a place in my mind that I don’t like to visit for too long a time. The first thing there is the Kennedy assassination. That was like having a blow to the middle and the lights going out. One so young and happy to lead us and gone in the flick of a trigger from a fanatic killer.
Next part in remembrance is the explosion of the Challenger in midsky. I was standing in a store with a large TV for viewing. That terrible sight unfolded on screen as I watched horrified. .Not the brave, the explorers, the undaunted, not them! But they were gone.
Then came 9/11, disaster doubled and tripled into the thousands while we watched life as we know it depart and crumble carrying our magnificient monoliths away and with them mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, breaking the heart of America.
I don’t like to consider that sadness too long. We have recovered, rebuilt, and remembered and we move on to establish the goals of many who left us that day. We keep hope for a “better day”. We can be thankful for that hope and still have the freedom to find it.

I watched the 9/11 events on live TV while on a trip abroad, and I can never forget the feeling – the mixture of disbelief, desperation, outrage, sadness, determination, and many others. To me also it ranks side by side with the Kennedy assassination
After reading Kurt Eichewald’s column in NYT, I find the most significant words at the end in the answer about whether the attack could have been stopped: “We can’t ever know.” But I find a different meaning of those words. We can never know all the events, actions, inactions and circumstances that might have changed the course of this and other histories. And I find the efforts to use the 9/11 tragedy as a political tool – from either side – rather indecent. The most political I could go with this issue would be to remind everybody to be careful about putting blame on others just because something happens on their watch.

Kyle linked to a response about the piece describing the Bush Administrations’ lack of vigilance in the weeks and months leading up to 9/11. The original piece stated that “some in the administration considered the [terrorist attacks] warning to be just bluster.” Among many bad defenses, the best defense that the above article had to offer was, “this is undoubtedly earth-shattering news to those who didn’t bother to read the 9/11 Commission Report (published in 2004), in which these warnings were first disclosed.”
This argument seems to say, “They screwed up, but we already knew that, so why should we care?” Seems to me that we should care.
Actually, however, we didn’t already know what the Times article reports. The Times article informs us that the neo-cons in the Bush administration did not take the threat of terrorist attacks seriously, despite cries from the CIA to do so, because Bush and friends thought that bin Laden was faking the threat of a possible attack specifically to draw their attention away from Iraq. Seriously. That’s what it says.
If true (key words), then this is disturbing on so many levels. The level of incompetence, negligence, and pure stupidity among Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and friends would way beyond anything than most of us can fathom.

Your post on this is pure partisan hypocrisy.
Seems to me that al Qaeda was at war with us for some time before we took them seriously. Our President Bush inherited this mess and had no actionable information to act on that would have enabled Him to prevent the attacks. “Al Qaeda determined to attack? Put the country in lockdown!”
He did a great job reforming our intelligence-gathering and anti-terror efforts in response to 9/11, which we are benefiting from today. He brought democracy to 50 million people who didn’t have it before. The Arab Spring is an echo of those efforts and will, in time, make most or all of the Middle East freer and more peaceful.

RE: “But you don’t find it disturbing that Clinton could have easily disrupted al Qaeda by taking out bin Laden on the several occasions…
People have short memories. Clinton tried to kill bin Laden, and Republicans criticized him at the time for doing so.
Rep. Dick Armey, GOP majority leader: “The suspicion some people have about the president’s motives in this attack [on bin Laden] is itself a powerful argument for impeachment,” Armey said in a statement. “After months of lies, the president has given millions of people around the world reason to doubt that he has sent Americans into battle for the right reasons.”
GOP Sen. Dan Coats: Coats, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement, “While there is clearly much more we need to learn about this attack [on bin Laden] and why it was ordered today, given the president’s personal difficulties this week, it is legitimate to question the timing of this action.”
Wall Street Journal editorial: “It is dangerous for an American president to launch a military strike, however justified, at a time when many will conclude he acted only out of narrow self-interest to forestall or postpone his own impeachment.”
The list goes on and on.

That being said, I think the suggestion that republicans are less vigilant in the war on terror than democrats is really a stretch. Remember, we’re supposed to be the “hawks” and you guys are supposed to be the “doves.” Obviously there was not enough intel to clue our people in to where the attack would happen. To suggest that Bush or anyone else ignored a known threat is simply absurd. And the quotes you selected from Graham and others I suspect are in regard to the aspirin factory bombing right before the mid-term elections.

One of my vivid memories of 9/11/11 came hours after the World Trade Centers were hit. It was a clip of apparently extra ER staff of a hospital who had been called in to duty. They were standing outside the hospital on the sidewalk, looking toward the WTCs, wondering where their anticipated patients were.
Where were the hurt & injured, who were not coming? The hurt & injury in their expressions, in their hearts & in their souls were apparent, as the realization set in that their “patients” were dead. Their awareness of the hopelessness of 9/11 made me aware of the senselessness of 9/11.
We’ve memorialized the victims who died on 9/11/11 for 12 years. There will never be memorials for those who cleaned up the toxic aftermath of 9/11 & who have died & are dying for such heroic efforts.
My family’s prayers today, as always, will be for all of those who lost on 9/11/11 & for those who gained a renewed sense of patriotism & determination on 9/11/11.

Unfortunately, the evidence seems to suggest otherwise.
Recall that a CIA briefer spoke to Bush while Bush was visiting his ranch in Texas. Amid numerous red flags indicating a pending al-Qaeda attack, the CIA specifically set out to call the president’s attention to the August 6, 2001 memo titled “Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US.” Bush heard the briefer out and replied: “All right. You’ve covered your ass, now.”

FINALLY a voice of reason! When it comes to intelligence, there is what we KNOW versus what we THINK we know, and what we THINK we should do about it versus what MUST be done. Even if it was known that there would be an imminent attack on us by AlQuaida, what would a reasonable person do when there had been ABSOLUTELY ZERO history of terrorist attacks on our shores? And by that, I mean what concrete steps would you expect a reasonable person to take at that time? Then, we’re those stps recommended to the president? Then, did he disagree with those recommendations?
And then there is the accountability thing. If ALL Bush received was that there would be an imminent attack using planes from AlQuaida, but no known dates, times, places, and there has been no history of a successful terrorist attack on our shores, what is Bush supposed to do? What were the recommended security precautions that his advisors were recommending to him? It is hard to blame him if he got incomplete information that was not KNOWN. It’s so much easier to see in hindsight–especially, apparently, for those who are critical of the Bush administration–because our security mindset is completely different now than it was 12 years ago.
If you think being a Monday morning quarterback is easier than being a quarterback, it is infinitely easi to be a Wednesday morning president.

Linda @ 8:37 pm,
Linda, I used to work at practices where a majority of patients were Medicaid (MC). I have worked in Atlanta area practices and I worked in one in LaGrange. There was a VERY significant difference in the quality of the people who I saw in the two areas.
In LaGrange, those who were on MC treated my boss and I with respect, because they knew we were taking a huge pay cut to see them. They were appreciative, and most of them were just simply down on their luck and not trying to abuse the system or act like they we owed anything. There were, of course a FEW exceptions, but for the most part, they were good people, and I felt good helping them out.
But the MC patients in ATL were the POLAR OPPOSITE! Most treated me like they were OWED the work. There were more a users of the system than the exceptions who were just simply good people who were down on their luck. Heck, I saw too many driving nicer cars than I drive bringing their 5 kids. It taught me QUICKLY that I NEVER want to have a MC practice in the ATL area. I would rather be gracious and generous to families and individuals for whom I personally have compassion.
To be honest with you, as bad as those patients could be, NOTHING was worse than treating atlanta-area DMO patients. They were worse, because they THOUGHT that because they paid $8 per month to an insurance company that they should then have access to th best dentistry for practically nothing more, and unlike the MC people, they PAID for it, so they were quite belligerent. Miserable. I will never work in those environments again. There are rumors that the government might one day FORCE all dentists to take some MC. I will MOVE or QUIT first! I am a generous man, but I want the right to choose when whom I am generous, not have the government force me to be generous to who they want me to.
I have chosen to have a practice where I offer some of the very best dentistry. I don’t always DO the best dentistry, because many can’t afford to do it the best way. But I firmly believe that the best medical system is one that COMPLETELY eliminates third party payers, where a patient and a doctor decide what is the best direction to go and how much the fees are. I say this BOTH as a patient and as a doctor.
People try to say it is a pipe dream, and to some degree it is, but every time someone complains about the state of health care, if you simplified it to an agreement between doctors and patients, it eliminates WAY more problems than it creates. I say this as someone who has to pay full price for his dentist to see him. I do it because he is the best, and that’s what I want for myself. When it comes to my mouth, I want the best, and I’m willing to save my money to get it. I think about all the crap I get around by just saving my money and paying cash for my work to be done. If you think that ANYONE who uses a participating provider is getting the best dentistry, I can tell you for certain that they are not. I cannot offer my highest level of care to my in-network patients. I lose money if I try, and no one goes into business to lose money. They have to settle for pretty-good dentistry, and most are happy with that. If anyone thinks they can get the best care at a discount, they are fooling themselves.
Hope that helps bring a reasonable context to my answer to your question.

Dr. Boag, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your lengthy answer to my question.
My premise is that health care in the US will need to be reformed so that patients pay cash to their primary care physicians for routine care & a percentage of the cost of emergency/illness care.
Health insurance needs to be the same as hazard insurance for homes & auto insurance.
As far as our homes, we pay for our utilities, our repairs & replacements & improvements for appliances carpets, roofs, paint, etc.
As far as our vehicles, we pay for our gas, our tires, our brakes jobs & our windshield wiper blades.
Health insurance needs to work the same way as hazard & auto insurance for the USA to ever creep its way out of the fiscal cliff that we face, specifically with Medicare, Medicaid & private health insurance.
What do you think?

President Bush was told in the months before the Sept. 11 attacks that Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network might hijack U.S. passenger planes – information which prompted the administration to issue an alert to federal agencies – but not the American public.
CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin says the warning was in a document called the President’s Daily Brief, which is considered to be the single most important document that the U.S. intelligence community turns out. The document did not, however, mention the possibility of planes being flown into buildings.
NY Times
On Aug. 6, 2001, President George W. Bush received a classified review of the threats posed by Osama bin Laden and his terrorist network, Al Qaeda. That morning’s “presidential daily brief” — the top-secret document prepared by America’s intelligence agencies — featured the now-infamous heading: “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” A few weeks later, on 9/11, Al Qaeda accomplished that goal.

I was at work, and my husband called to say a plane had hit one of the towers. My company told everyone to go to the conference room, where they turned on the TV for us. In horror we watched as a second plane crashed into the other tower. We then heard that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon, and later that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. A coworker from NYC cried, she had once worked in the World Trade Centers and her brother was a NYC fireman. She later found she had lost friends who where working there that day. A few days later, the VP of our department learned one of her friend’s daughter had been on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. Our company told us all to go home early that day. We were also told we could come in late the next day. I went home and sat with my husband, watching the TV for any news of survivors.
I visited the World Trade Center Memorial this summer. It was very beautiful and peaceful.
Today, I emailed my NYC friend to let her know if was thinking of her. She has sinced moved away, but we still keep in touch. I still feel the horror and sadness of that day.

Objectively, 9/11 might not have happened if Clinton had decided to take Bin Laden when offered to us, but as with the arguments about what might have happened to the economy or GM if McCain had been elected, we’ll never know.
Did Bush treat the warnings of a possible attack lightly? Maybe. Only those in attendance in his security briefings know for sure, and that certainly doesn’t include any poster on this blog.
Was the U.S. government setup regarding information sharing to blame as well? Probably. To say that if this government would stop interfering with an Amish farmer’s ability to sell milk and focus on one of the first roles of government – national security – would be an understatement.
There are far too many people, organizations and policies to blame for 9/11.

Did it make a statement about our culture? Yes. That’s a fair criticism, and as I noted, you were right. It could wait. And I issued an apology to you and others who might have found it inappropriate for the day.
BTW, my family lost a friend that day. He was a fire chief that was witnessed entering the North Tower 4 minutes before its collapse. Somewhat miraculously, even though many rescuers’ families had no traces of their loved ones to bury, they actually found his fireman’s hat. That was what was placed in his coffin.
I had already spent a good part of my day thinking about what we went through on that and the following few days. Perhaps my wanting to vent a little was a result of having done that for most of the day.

McTool says…Cons, take note that those attacks didn’t occur on US soil.
An embassy is considered to be that nations soil within the host country and failing to protect it could be considered an act of war.

Yeah, Del, I was going to address Finn’s lack of understanding on THAT issue as well.
As we have seen, CIVILIZED countries consider embassies to be sovereign territory. That is why England didn’t interfere with that fool Assange as he spoke from a balcony in London.

No, he’s a fool for allegedly raping someone and using the U.S. as a scapegoat for not going back to his country to face the charges.

Consider the story of Bain Capital and Duane Reade. Bain purchased the drugstore chain and hired a CEO who was later convicted of investor fraud, while the chain itself was selling out-of-date drugs and baby formula to its customers.
Duane Reade’s story is not unlike that of Damon International, whose Bain-anointed CEO was convicted for tricking doctors into ordering unnecessary procedures and billing them (ironically enough) to Medicare. Apparently Romney and Bain had an eye for healthcare talent: an evil eye.
But even that isn’t the biggest part of the story. This is: Mitt Romney and Bain Capital were among the first to to engage in the kinds of highly leveraged buyouts of private healthcare companies that pressures them to overtreat patients and overbill payers just to satisfy their investors.

The US embassy in Libya is in Tripoli, not in Benghazi, where the Ambassador and the other persons were killed. And they were not killed in the consulate there either, but in a car.

When somebody starts a jingoistic rant about “act of war,” (Del @9:19 am), it is time to check the facts. On one hand, we have the fact that the terrorist actions in Libya have been strongly condemned by both the Libyan and US government. Apart from that, some posts here contained false facts, such as the one about “sovereignty” of the diplomatic missions, and even the laughable nonsense that “wherever our ambassador is, that’s sovereign U.S. territory.”
Those, who are really interested in the laws regarding diplomatic missions, might check the pertinent document, The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, specifically Article 22.

MarkV, How about your misinformed ignorant nonsense that you posted at 10:44 am. Worse than your ignorance is that you appear to be relieving the Libyan government from any responsibility. This incident requires a full investigation to determine what level of aid did Libyan authorities render to protect the Ambassador and his staff? Were there any casualties suffered by Libyan police or military attempting to thwart the attack? This just can’t be written off as an unfortunate incident. Libya must cooperate fully in tracking down and bringing those directly responsible to full justice.
