TAMPA — So I’m sitting at the gate in the Tampa airport, Sunday column filed, and finally have time to put down some quick thoughts about Thursday night’s finale at the RNC.
First, Clint Eastwood’s performance is a good example of why (I presume) he insists that the actors in his movies follow a script. There were some grand moments in there — “You, we, we own this country. … Politicians are employees of ours” being one of them — and the image of President Obama as an empty chair is going to have staying power in this campaign. But his 12-minute bit could have been done in much less time and been even more effective. As rambling and bizarre as Eastwood was at times, I don’t think he hurt Mitt Romney with his performance. He just didn’t help as much as he might have.
Second, there were a few primetime-worthy appearances earlier in the evening that would have done much more to burnish Romney’s public image. The first was a trio of speeches by members of Romney’s church in Massachusetts, talking about their friendship with the Romneys and the ways Mitt Romney went out of his way to help them in times of personal crisis. I won’t go into these too much because Sunday’s column focuses on one of them. But they were extremely moving and shed light on two aspects of him: his faith, and his service to others. Ann Romney said Tuesday night, going off-script for a few moments to emphasize the point, that he doesn’t like to talk about things he does for others. But the stories of that trio went a long way toward demonstrating there’s a lot to tell.
The Olympians’ appearance was also worthy, particularly Derek Parra’s speech. Even better may have been the video about his salvage job at the 2002 Winter Games. If I can find it online, I’ll add a link.
Third, Jeb Bush’s appearance with a teacher and student from Florida was strong. The time devoted to it, taken with Condoleezza Rice’s remarks about education reform and school choice, suggested strongly that those would be high-priority issues in a Romney presidency. Then Romney himself named them in a list of five things he would do to reinvigorate the economy in the short and long terms. If the campaign continues to talk about school choice, it could make for an unexpected but welcome complement to school choice advocates’ charter school campaign in Georgia this fall.
Fourth, Marco Rubio was outstanding, as expected. He spent a great deal of time talking about himself — which some observers have taken as a way to promote himself for 2016 or 2020 — but I don’t think the Romney folks will worry too much about that. That’s because any promotion of Rubio’s story is a promotion of American exceptionalism and the endurance of the American Dream. Indeed, Rubio was just one of several speakers this week who described themselves as first-, second- or third-generation Americans. At a national level, there is an obvious intent among Republicans to change the way their partisans talk about immigration. Which is not to say going soft on illegal immigration, but to make clear that there are a host of welcome, legal immigrants that the GOP intends to celebrate.
Finally, there was Romney himself. Let’s get this out of the way: He wasn’t the best speaker of the week. He might not even have been in the top 5. But that is not what makes him presidential material, and he certainly gave an address worthy of a presidential nominee. It built carefully but surely to a strong finish, and everyone I spoke with came away thinking he had done a perfectly fine job at capping off the week.
Overall, if the GOP’s goal was to explain the message it’s selling to voters clearly and confidently, the week was a success.

Yeah thats what Georgia needs. Charter schools where the first thing they do is through out Science and replace it with Religion. At taxpayer expense mind you.

A biology textbook used by a Christian school in Louisiana that will be accepting students with publicly funded vouchers in the fall says that the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland is real. And it isn’t just any monster but a dinosaur — an effort to debunk evolution and bolster creationist theory.

Three take aways from the RNC:
1. Invisible Obama uncomfortableness
2. Paul Ryan’s all out lies
3. Mitt Romney in his best speech ever (But too bad it wasn’t full of more details. Just because you read your bullet points 1 through 5 doesn’t mean you are explaining policy specifics. But this has been the campaign stategy all along, so I am not suprised.)

Kyle, I agree emphatically with everything you said. Great job, mission accomplished. We can do better than what we have (not much, as was pointed out)
The best part of last night was the testimonials from the church people. Knowing several Mormons, that I really respect, this is normal for what they do. They spend inordinate amounts of time serving others. Their bishops counsel their members for anything they wish to improve in their lives. I don’t agree with some of their beliefs, but if I had to be in a foxhole with someone shooting at me, I would be glad to know their were Mormons in the hole with me.
I’m sure Obama has gone out of his way to help someone somewhere, maybe he will tell us about it at the Dimfest. Surely he has assisted someone back to the clubhouse, whose cart broke down on the backside of the course, or something.

A convention is not a place where you get into minutia. Romney’s detailed plan is on his website.
Obama’s very detailed plan is in his words, spoken daily, Rich need to pay their “fair share”. End of plan.

I thought Clint Eastwood’s performance was rambling, and bizarre. I also thought it was absolutely brilliant and hilarious. The rambling part helped it come across as real and unscripted common sense straight from the heart. He poked fun at Obama hitting him with one zinger after another, and you’re just not allowed to do that to the incredibly thin-skinned Obama. The liberal msm lackeys are in overdrive attacking Eastwood. The relatively few conservative voices on msm publications should not help them out or be influenced by them. What Eastwood did was devastating for Obama. Watching Eastwood’s presentation is funnier the 2nd time when you realize what he’s up to. That Eastwood drew so much attention and scorn means that millions who didn’t watch the convention are now seeking it out on the Internet.

1. Obamacare cuts $700 billion from Medicare, reduced coverage anyone?
2. Obama commissioned Simpson-Bowles and then spit on their recommendations, so what difference does Simpson-Bowles make?
3. He didn’t lie about Janesville. The plant closed in April 2009, which is after Obama took office. Further, in his comments, all he did was quote the president nearly word for word. I know the “fact checkers” claim he lied, but when you read the transcripts that gets debunked rather quickly.
4. America’s spending problem is what led to the credit downgrade, and the president has spent more money during his administration than every other president combined. I’d say that the Dems were a pretty big reason for the credit downgrade.

Judge overturns Ohio law, restores in-person early voting in 3 days leading to Election Day
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A federal judge has overturned a recent Ohio state law and restored in-person, early voting for the final three days leading up to Election Day.
The lawsuit was brought by President Barack Obama’s campaign and the Ohio Democratic Party which sought to overturn a new law that would have shutdown early voting after 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 until the polls opened on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Judge Peter C. Economus of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio ruled that the new statute is unconstitutional.
It “is unconstitutional to the extent it changes the deadline for in-person early voting from the close of business on the day before Election Day to 6 p.m. on the Friday before Election Day,” the ruling reads.
The ruling goes on to say that “in-person early voting is restored on the three days immediately preceding Election Day for all eligible Ohio voters.”

I enjoyed the interlude with Clint Eastwood last night. If taken as entertainment and not some serious political discussion, it was excellent. He made a few really good points, some of which Kyle posted, but overall I found his time on stage to be a conversation which almost every other American (without tingles up their legs) might have with Obama.
Romney’s speech wasn’t epic, but that’s not the way he does things.
He just succeeds at everything he tries to do. He succeeded last night.
And if anyone took the time to watch some of the speakers last night put a “human” face on Mitt Romney, they would have come away more informed and more willing to support a guy who just can’t find it in him to brag about his personal accomplishments.

@Tiberius – Wow.
So you really think that what YOU wrote (and supposedly what Romney said?) is different from Bush’s economy? Wow.
A. A defined energy plan to harness ALL our available energy sources by 2020… Bush wanted to “drill baby drill” – I think was the catch phrase. This was to use “American” resources. Wasn’t it?
B. Cutting regulations that slow down business expansion and creation… Bush did this, in particular with Banks. Don’t you remember what happened? He cut the regulations and the “red tape” to make business “better.” Let me remind you that what happened was massive corruption and massive stealing from the middle class. Oh yeah – but Bush’s friends made out like bandits – literally.
C. Cut Federal spending to 20% of GDP… Bush did cut federal spending of sorts. He cut out a lot of the “big spending” on the social safety net – which by the way is less than 1% of the federal budget. LOL!
D. Expand educational opportunities to help train our workforce for the 21st century… I guess this means allowing those private colleges to steal more of the education loan dollars from unsuspecting people? How much you want to bet that Romney (or some other big wig republican) has stock in Phoenix University or the like?

C. Cut Federal spending to 20% of GDP.
Top Romney economic adviser GlennHubbard reiterates that he would aim to reduce federal spending from roughly twenty-four per cent of G.D.P. in fiscal 2012 to twenty per cent by 2016. Romney hasn’t spelled out how he would reach this target, but simple arithmetic suggests he would need to impose about five hundred billion dollars in annual spending cuts, which is equivalent to more than three per cent of G.D.P.

Don’t mistake local cuts in education with a plan to help educate from the Federal level. In addition, don’t confuse throwing money down the current rathole of education with creating a plan to better educate our people.
” How do you plan to expand the economy by CONTRACTION!!??”
Contracting the Federal government is the first step towards expansion of the private sector. Government doesn’t create permanent private sector jobs, by and large.

Bush “wanted” – operative word here – to drill, baby, drill. Never got around to it. Romney succeeds in everything he does. He will drill, but he’ll also expand coal, wind, solar and nuclear for a comprehensive energy plan.
Deregulation was not the ultimate cause of our financial meltdown, except for the deregulation that was caused by the repeal of Glass-Steagall (and yes, both Republicans AND Democrats voted for that disaster).
And Bush NEVER cut spending. Ever.

” But, of course, aggregate coverage of the RNC across networks topped “Honey Boo Boo’s” numbers.”
Actually it is a shame that one group reports inaccurately, and that others, who should know better, do not question every single “fact” that they report.

It would definitely surprise me considering there is nothing that is “free”. Many countries in Europe include college as an entitlement, but they also have a tax rate around 50%……
Problem over here is folks want it to be “free” as long as others are paying for it………

I didn’t watch all of the convention, but REALLY enjoyed watching the usual suspects in the AJC blog universe freak out over and over again- particularly after Ryan’s speech. The Obama team is scared. One conclusion of the convention is that the GOP has a much deeper bench than the Dems do. The only response the Dems have are personal attacks and the race card. Americans can see through that BS. Paul Ryan, Susana Martinez, Marco Rubio, Mitch Daniels, Bobby Jindal, Chris Christie are actually accomplishing things at the state level that Obama only dreams of. Just compare what is going on in Obama’s home state of Illinois to the surrounding state’s led by Republican Governors. Looking at the Charlotte convention speaker’s list makes you realize that Bill Clinton is the best member of their team and he isn’t running for office. Hillary will be far away from Charlotte. The Pelosi/Reid crowd are out of ideas, basically corrupt, and intellectually bankrupt. The next generation of Democratic leaders- Sandra Fluke, Lily Ledbetter, and Snooki (that Life of Julia character)- well we know what they have accomplished and it certainly won’t get the U.S. out of recession. The other big take away from the GOP convention for me is that Obama and his team can’t handle criticism. They have been sheltered by a friendly media, but when they are confronted with facts- like the fundamental flaws in Obamacare math- they try to blame Bush or play the race card. You are right that Romney is not the best speaker. However, when he outlined his five point agenda, he made sense and gave more detail than Obama has in four years. George (Ooompa Loompa) Stephanopolous will lob Obama softball social issue questions during the debates because he knows that Obama can’t handle questions about the economy (You didn’t build that), international affairs ( I will be more flexible when not running for office), energy ( $billions of program losses Keystone pipeline, private sector shale dominance), and the ability to accomplish bipartisan legislation ( No Federal budget for his entire term, fiscal cliff). Regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, Ryan’s image of the 20 something year old college grad living in Mom and Pop’s basement frustrated about not being able to find a job is a sad memorable reflection of the Obama years. Obama has disappointed his backers from 2008 and has no plan for the future. The country can no longer afford to have a union puppet trying to adhere to yesterday’s business models or we will never get out of this recession. Obama is over his head is it is time for amateur hour to end.

Based on what people tell me. I have run into many who voted for Obama and plan to correct the Mistake this time. Haven’t had anyone tell me they voted for McCain and are sorry.
I have a good friend, who caught a great deal of grief over his vote for Obama. He was trying to justify it in Dec/Jan 2008, and he said he was so sick of Bush that he thought we needed a change. When he was asked about Obama’s radical promise to fundamentally change the America we love, his response was, can’t happen, Presidents never get to do much because of Congress. He said he wasn’t inline with Obama on much, but thought, he was a nice guy and would be mostly ineffective, so what difference did it make.
Well he has seen enough damage, to finally admit he made a terrible mistake.

I tuned in to MSNBC late last night, and all I heard was how Clint Eastwood totally bombed. Ditto on yahoo.com this AM. I just watched the piece in its entirety, and quite frankly, I laughed my butt off–WITH Eastwood, and not AT him. He made numerous solid points and cut a few good jokes in between.
All I can say is that the Libs in this country are a bunch of tight-arses. The man was funny, give him his due.

As for Romney’s speech, I only caught the end, and I thought it was fine. The best point to me was how he emphasized that we are the UNITED States of America, emphasis on UNITED. Since Day 1, Obama has gone out of his way to subdivide the country into special-interest groups based on race, wealth, political affinity, or what-have-ya. IMO, this has been extremely harmful to the collective psyche of the nation. We’ve come full circle from Kennedy’s “Ask what you can do for the country” back to “What can the country do for you??”
Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m sick and tired of Obama and Libs in general. Bunch of whining losers in my book.

Believe it or not, LBB, I thought the fairest Lib commentator on MSNBC last night was the Right Reverend Al Sharpton. “The Republicans had the task at the convention of making their candidate more palatable, likeable to the American electorate,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark. “Our data suggests they have absolutely succeeded.”
Especially notable was Romney’s boost among independents, 45 percent of whom rated him favorably, compared with Thursday’s 34 percent. Twenty percent of independents found him likeable, up from Thursday’s 16 percent.
Although lagging behind Obama in most other favorable metrics, Romney continued to make headway in categories such as “represents America,” “understands people like me” and “is a good person.”
Respondents said Romney would be more effective than Obama as president by a margin of 37 percent to 33 percent. The margin was even wider among independents, at 26 percent versus 17 percent.

I’ve heard that discussion many times pertaining to shouting, being in the spirit, etc. My view is it’s not my place to judge. God will sort it out, when He sees fit. It is an interesting topic, though. I think in all religions that some folks make the mistake of following a man, rather than the religion.
But so as not to disappoint you, here’s something country. I like country the same as I like most other genres, straightforward and to the point. This is the real thing.
