TAMPA — The consensus around here seems to be that Chris Christie might have been Tuesday’s keynote speaker, but Ann Romney stole the show from the New Jersey governor. I agree, and will have more thoughts on Mrs. Romney’s speech later. But Christie delivered exactly what I expected, and was quite good at doing so.
Christie built on a key theme developed earlier in the night by a series of Republican governors, most of them elected since Barack Obama entered the White House. Ohio’s John Kasich, Virginia’s Bob McDonnell, Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, Nevada’s Brian Sandoval and South Carolina’s Nikki Haley talked about how they’d gotten their states’ finances on track without abandoning their conservative principles, and Christie offered maybe the most dramatic examples of that:
They said it was impossible to cut taxes in a state where taxes were raised 115 times in eight years. That it was impossible to balance a budget at the same time, with an $11 billion deficit. Three years later, we have three balanced budgets with lower taxes.
We did it.
They said it was impossible to touch the third rail of politics. To take on the public sector unions and to reform a pension and health benefit system that was headed to bankruptcy.
With bipartisan leadership we saved taxpayers $132 billion over 30 years and saved retirees their pension.
We did it.
“We did it” offered a clear contrast to the untested Obama promise from 2008, “Yes, we can,” and the examples of the kinds of tough decisions he and the other governors have made offered a clear contrast to the unfulfilled promise of the three and a half years of Obama’s presidency. What Obama has been unable to do — balance, or in most years even pass, the budget; reduce both current and future obligations on taxpayers; create better conditions for the private sector to flourish — they have done. And then they all took that thought to the next step: Mitt Romney can make it work, too.
Or, as Christie put it, “if we can do this in a blue state with a conservative Republican governor, Washington is out of excuses.”
Christie has become a YouTube legend for the zingers he’s flung, off the cuff, at vocal detractors during public events. In a setting like a national convention, that opportunity wasn’t likely to present itself, and didn’t. (A few protesters were removed much earlier Tuesday evening for trying to shout down speakers from the rafters.)
But that fame hasn’t come strictly because he has a quick wit and sharp tongue. It’s because he packs principled truth into those one-liners, and he had several such moments Tuesday night:
The delivery was a little rushed — Christie had to speed up toward the end to fit it all in before the networks cut away to local news at 11 — and it wasn’t quite the kind of performance that people will still be talking about even after Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney deliver their messages the next two evenings. But it had all the elements that remind us why Christie has become a conservative champion, and why 2012 is unlikely to be the high-water mark of his influence in the party.

Christie did exactly what the keynoter is supposed to do, energize the audience. I thought he did a magnificent job.
One of the post-speech critiquers, on PBS I believe, summed it up nicely. Mrs. Romney’s mission was to reach out to prospective voters, e.g. women, and Gov. Christie’s was to solidify the existing base. They both delivered in fine fashion.

Republicans believe in teachers? Lol. What a croc. Republicans believe that teachers and any other government worker is a leech that is taking money away from corporations. Just look at how teachers have been laid off in GA the last few years, while tax breaks were lavished on big business. Christie had a quote about always telling the truth as well, but even that was a lie. That’s why the media thinks his speech sucked, bc it wasn’t honest. Kyle can stay in bizarro world if he wants to. No word on the nut throwers who were kicked out either. Only some rafter yelling people that no one heard. What a hypocrite.

It will be no surprise that the libtards will pan a speech touting American values and beliefs.…that was filled with half truths.
The Democratic legislature unanimously approved a teacher tenure reform package in June, and Christie signed it a few weeks ago. Except, for all of Christie’s fiery anti-union rhetoric, the bill was actually crafted with significant input from the state’s teachers union, which supported its passage. Again, Christie can claim some credit here for pushing the issue aggressively in the public square and making it a priority.

Republicans always argue that tax cuts, cuts to government spending, and balanced budgets will unleash the economy and create jobs. How has that worked out in New Jersey? The unemployment rate has gone up since Christie took office. UP! Mr. Christie forgot to mention that:
“There’s one number New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie almost certainly won’t mention in his keynote speech Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention: 9.8 percent, his state’s current unemployment rate.
That dwarfs the troubling 8.3 percent national unemployment rate under President Barack Obama. And while the national rate has stayed relatively flat for the past five months, the Garden State’s has risen from 9 percent in March when its previous decline stopped.”

The GOP hierarchy is afraid of it’s own shadow. Christie should have held up page whatever of the Bozocare health care plan that says that over 700B in Medicare funds will be cut. He should have pointed out that we have not had significant growth in 4 years and that our unemployment is over 8% and has been for about 43 months. He should have pointed out that the person who is posing as president of this country is an incompetent buffoon. But, oh no, we might lose independents if we go that route. Someone in this liberal joke we call a media might just criticize us and we can’t have that, now can we. RE: “17 recently elected Republican Governors, faced with significant democrat representation in their state legislatures, are making progress…”
Congressional Republicans have refused to work with Obama on legislation that Republicans previously supported and/or campaigned on such as health care mandates, stimulus during economic recession, infrastructure spending, cap-and-trade, and even a grand bargain that would have cut deficits by $4 trillion dollars. They even voted against a deficit commission bill that they introduced and co-sponsored because President Obama embraced the idea. Even now, Republicans are running around the country complaining about the sequestration budget cuts that they themselves proposed and voted for.
Yet, some would have us believe that Republicans abandoned their own positions because of Obama’s poor leadership skills.?
No, Congressional Republicans are opposing President Obama at every turn, not because of policy differences and/or lack of leadership from the White House. They’re doing it because of politics. Their view is that any success for Obama hurts their chances of winning back the White House. So, they’ve done everything possible to thwart him. In response, members of their base make the false claim that Obama doesn’t have leadership skills rather than recognizing the fact that they are being conned.

It is pathetic that criticism of people of means is so vilifying. Wonder how all of those limousine liberals like Kerry, Gore, Ted and Jack Kennedy and John Edwards feel about the plight of the unfortunate? Answer…. every time there is an election. They trot out the same old tired rhetoric about Republicans caring about nothing but their wealth. Republicans only care about how much money they make and certainly don’t care about women, minorities, the unfortunate, our water supply, someone’s job, social security, medicare…… nothing. Only about making money and screwing anyone they can just to make more. That crap might win over someone who is stupid enough to believe it, and unfortunately, thanks to that joke we call the media, there are those who will believe anything as long as they hear it from some liberal talking head who is “supposed to know”. I just hope that the majority of the electorate is intelligent enough to grasp the truth. The rest of them, including the vast majority of the black community, is hopeless.

There’s only one reason why millionaires register their mega-yachts in the Cayman Islands — and it’s the very same reason why Mitt Romney has offshore accounts registered there. Taxes — or, more accurately, the lack thereof. It makes a perfect kind of sense. Millionaires want to help Romney get elected because not only will that prevent Obama from raising their taxes, but it could well result in their current tax burden falling even further. So there’s a beautiful honesty in gathering together on a yacht that pays no U.S. taxes — see, America, this is what we’re all about.

wow, and this from a conservative?
[M]illions of Americans who do not pay federal income taxes do pay federal payroll taxes. These taxes are regressive, and the dirty little secret is that over the last several decades they have made up a greater and greater share of federal revenues. In 1950, payroll and other federal retirement contributions constituted 10.9 percent of all federal revenues. By 2007, the last “normal” economic year before federal revenues began falling, they made up 33.9 percent. By contrast, corporate income taxes were 26.4 percent of federal revenues in 1950. By 2007 they had fallen to 14.4 percent. So who has skin in the game?

Must be something in the drinks Kyle had at that GOP love fest but in sixty years of watching conventions that was the absolutely worst keynote speech I have heard. Scott Walker and Nikki Haley had my attention riveted and would have been excellent in that slot. Christie shoule be on Jersey Shore and give up politics. I have no idea what he was saying about Romney and all those GOP governors made Romney look really bad touting their accomplishments and no one dared mention Mitt’s accomplishment of that unmentionable state with that umentionable healthhcare program as his main non-accomplishment.
Anne Romeny talked about compassion and love which have no place at this convention. Mr. gangster from Jersey says in typical mobster fashion moments later- to heck with that love respect-we only want respect. I hope those two campaign together. quite a pair.
Did some Democrat sneak into his speech the part about compromise, bipartisan support and truthtelling?? And this is after Santorum embellishes the big lie and race baiting tactic of saying Obama illegally cut work out of welfare?

Christie and the other governors Kyle cited did not “get their states back on track”. They killed hundreds of thousands of jobs, and turned down multiple opportunities for enormous infra-structure inprovements. New Jersey’s unemployment rate is the 4th highest in the nation, higher even than Michigan’s.
The action of the states in cutting jobs is the primary cause of the slow economic recovery. The federal government spent trillions in borrowed money to keep the economy from falling into depression. The states could have done their part in job recovery by raising their fuel taxes by a penny or two, and raising the income tax of high-earners by a few percent.

How to help America
1. Cut spending-when your checkbook is in the red….STOP WRITING CHECKS-home finance 101
2. Increase revenues-NOT by increasing taxes, but by creating an environment in which business NEED to hire workers…..the more people working translates to more tax revenue generated, which translates to fewer people needing government assistance-It’s a win/win-In effect you are cutting spending and increasing tax revenue in one fail swoop!
How do you create this environment? Make it profitable for companies to stay in the US, and not outsource jobs, etc…does this mean….GASP!!!….tax cuts for the wealthy? YES!!!! Ask most people if they want their boss to be successful and rich, or poor and struggling? The intelligent people want their bosses (i.e. the company they work for) to be successful and rich.
You see, when people become successful in business, they tend to continue to grow their businesses and henceforth, they provide wealth making opportunities for their employees. And if not wealth making, at least the ability to provide a decent living for themselves and their families. When you stifle business, the exact opposite occurs. They will inevitably cocoon what wealth they have and live with the status quo….which leads to stagnation and recession. It’s all pretty simple. I learned this in my freshman year of college in micro and macro economics….

They all want to perpetuate a regressive tax code which incentivizes the Wall Street wealthy who destroy our country, while talking bad about teachers and public education. They actually publicly tout that their prayers changed the course of Hurricane Isaac, as if God would care enough about their hate rally to move the trajectory of a hurricane from not particularly flood prone Tampa and instead send it straight back into a still recovering gulf coast. Millionaires talking about “shared sacrifice” in a country of people who’s tax dollars bailed out Wall Street while they lost their houses and jobs? These people are DEMONS.

Lulu, you do understand that we have heard that exact same claptrap for thirty years and look where it got us.
The environment you speak of does not exist in this perverted from of trickle-down capitalism.
Corporations are handsomely rewarded – via enormous tax credits – to ship decent American jobs overseas. 40,000,000 American jobs have been lost or sent overseas since the 1970s!
Maybe one day you fiscally irresponsible Republicans will understand the basics.
The American middle class has been devastated for forty straight years. As in FLATLINED wages. As in almost 80% of American workers make virtually no more money – in adjusted inflation dollars – than they did in the 1970s.
Though their productivity has doubled.
So, they cannot afford to buy anything.
When they cannot afford to buy anything, the makers of those anythings cannot sell them.
Which means that they do not hire any more workers, which means that more and more and more middle class workers don’t have decent jobs anymore.
But I’m sure you know that the millionaires and billionaires in this country are working really long and hard to fix that, huh?

The government needs businesses to operate. Therefore you need to support business growth, from the “mom and pop” store all the way up to the mega corporations. Without it, the country is doomed to fail and become completely, 100% socialist, in which all people look to the government to provide all things. And I disagree with you that running a government is not like running household or business. Especially regarding the deficit. As a household or business, if you continue to spend more than you bring in, bankruptcy will be in your future. The government is basically already there. Unless things change, and change quickly….

Where exactly have you been the last 30 years???? We had unprecedented growth and prosperity under Regan and Clinton, who both followed the “trickle down” philosophy. However, when socialist leaning administrations have had the power, social programs increased, the number of people on these programs increased and the drain on the economy was evident. Think FDR and the current adminstration. Yes, it is a complicated issue, but the basic tenants have been fundamentally the same since the beginning of time. People succeed when they get rewarded for doing so. They stop trying when it gets them nowhere.

Cons and dems only talk about change. But their idea of “change” is making silly little meaningless tweaks around the edges of these massive problems.
And though I thought it was horribly crafted and misguided, at least BHO will go down in history as the only prez in fifty years to at least try making a massive change on behalf of working Americans with his PPACA. (Legislation that Republicans originally created, supported and sought.)
I support massive change to fix our dysfunctional government held hostage by the dual incompetent criminal organizations – the Tweedledee and Tweedledum parties. AKA the GOP and Democrats.

Ryan is absolutely correct, home finance and government finance have nothing to do with one another. At home, you have a limited amount of money to spend, to finance your home, food, cars, entertainment, etc. You are responsible for protecting those you love. You have to balance your budget or lose everything and your family suffer.
Government could more appropriately be compared to a drunken sailor, who has discovered he has found Bill Gates’ debit card and an ATM. He has an unlimited amount to spend, no guidelines on how to spend, no accountability on how it is spent, and no conscience about blowing the money.

For those of you, who didn’t take the time to check out my link @ 4:10, I’ll go straight to the most important part.
Can White Americans Criticize President Obama and Not be labeled A Racist?
In order to move forward, and perhaps closer to the post-racial era that Americans have been striving for – supporters of Barack Obama, particularly African American supporters, must learn that every time someone – particularly White Americans harshly criticises him, it’s not racist and doesn’t necessarily reflect racism. If the African American community insist on using the “race card” as a political defense against criticism of President Obama, White Americans will ultimately throw in the towel and say “enough is enough” and re-unite around issues of race thereby setting the stage to wipe out potential Democratic gains in 2010 and setting the stage for a defeat of President Obama in 2012.
Democratic gains in 2010? That already happened.
I’m addressing the liberals here…don’t know if you’re black or white…don’t care. Keep up the charges of racism and the damage might JUST become irrepairable.
Is that what you want?

And wages for College grads with such majors as engineering, math and science have been keeping pace.
Patently, 100%, made up out of thin air fallacious nonsense.
You still don’t have a basic grasp of the topic.
Otherwise college graduates – even in those fields – would be making at least $150,000 per year.
Right out of the shoot! With no work experience at all.
And that is NOT happening. Even the people in those fields with certain highly desirable expertise and experience are making maybe $75K to $125K.
Unless of course, you have credible links to verifiable evidence noting otherwise.
(It takes around $200K in 2012 dollars to equal $35k in 1970 dollars)

I know of what you speak, I occasionally try to see what the other side is saying and I tuned in to see Wolf Blitzer and two attack hounds interview Rubio. They would hurl an accusation at him and before he got 30 seconds to reply, hurl another. You could see he was getting very agitated, but I guess he thought it would be poor form to just walk off. I think, my opinion, that conservatives would be better off to just decline any interview from the left leaning press, unless it is live and one on one, none of this two or three attack the interview subject.
It is over the top, always been bad, but this year, I think they are desperate to prop up the Mistake.

Christie isn’t running for President…..and apparently the people of New Jersey wanted him in office….His weight is irrelevant. Ted Kennedy was a drunken murderer, but I guess he was fit to lead…???WTF I suppose you are the picture of health, because you are obviously a liberal. The government has been telling you how to live your life, and you have swallowed the kool-aid. I am assuming that you don’t smoke, that you eat all of the prescribed amounts of food from the USDA food pyramid, that you are considering becoming a vegetarian, that you exercise at least 30 minutes a day and get your heart rate up to 100% of resting each time you do. Because I know it is a FACT that all Liberals have BMI’s of less than 24 right?
Give me a break….people from both parties come in all shapes and sizes-it is ridiculous that this is even being discussed.
Let’s have a real discussion about what needs to be done to put our Country back on the right path. This country didn’t just appear…there were some pretty intellegent men who had a vision about how a free society should work. And for the most part it has worked pretty well. It’s when we as a people believe that the government knows what’s best for us, and we flee from what we know to work, is when things get “ify”. STOP looking to the government to make everything better-look to yourself for change.

JamVet: You know, you MIGHT be right. But look back at history and see what your line of thinking has caused. I’m referring to sterotyping on the basis of appearance, disability. And when you PRESUME someone has emotional and pyschological issues (dare I say, is “inferior” or “defective” or a “danger to society”), well, (1) look what damage that has caused in world and US history, and (2) think about what that says about YOU.
Your comments are a perfect example of why Government needs to be limited, out of necessity to preserve liberty and freedom.

Your statement is patenly ridiculous. I did not vote for Obama, but not because of his appearance. I didn’t vote for him because I do not agree with his policies. That is what Jet Vet was implying in his post. That Christie isn’t fit to lead because of his weight. Another great thing about this country is that you get to vote, and that the majority wins, but you have another chance in 4 years to vote for a new leader….that’s the way it is….I accept it, and so should you.

I trained to run in the Georgia Senior Olympics.
I am 57 and can still bench press my body weight and more.
I do not use tobacco and drink alcohol very rarely. I do read and understand extremely well the labels on food items as provided for by the USDA (one of the feral agencies that cons hate). I hav eeducated myself extensively on healthy foods and lifestyles.
And YOU, it seems, are somewhat ignorant on these matters as the food pyramid has been replaced with updated and improved information a couple of years ago.
Even after devastating, nearly fatal blood clots I am still extremely fit, more so than most flabby cons half my age.
I have a home workout that I do almost every day.
And what the hell does this mean?! …get your heart rate up to 100% of resting…
I have spent innumerable hours of my life in gyms and working out with tons of other people and I have never heard of that one. Are you making this stuff up? LOL.
In short, being in the best shape of my life, saved it. (along with the amazing doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital, Salute!!)
So yes, for me physical fitness (I grew up under Jofn F. Kennedy) is more than just a passing fad. I live it.

My point in my post is that we don’t need to government to tell us what to do or how to live our lives. I am so thankful that I live in a country where I can choose for myself what and how I am going to live my life. If I chose to be unhealthy, that is my choice and I alone will suffer the consequences. If I chose to be healthy, I alone will reap the benefits. But it’s MY choice. Unless liberals have their way.
And as a matter of fact, I am in excellent health. I haven’t smoked a cigarette ever, and I drink only on occassion. I didn’t train to be in the Senior Olympics, but I do cycle many races throughout the year, including “Ride the Rockies”.
And for somebody who is fit, you should know that in order to improve and maintain cardiovascular health you have to INCREASE your resting heart rate by approximately 100%. So if your RHR is 60 bpm, when you are exercising it should be around 120 bpm.
The fact that you categorize conservatives as flabby, and your comments about Christie, shows your true colors, and you are deflecting the real issues.

The guy said he never had a MySpace page. With all the hacking that goes on, it presents a case of reasonable doubt.

Anarchists????
Where do you come up with this stuff??
LOL!
Just admit that your pals here and around the country called those people every disgusting lie imaginable. Even the housewives, nuns, school teachers, firefighters, cops, middle aged employees, college students, veterans, etc.
They did not care.
They lumped everyone of them into their hateful diatribes about them ALL being jobless parasites and rapists.
It was FAR, FAR, FAR beyond anything that was rational and civil disagreement.
A little intellectual honesty won’t kill you…

A few days ago, ou offered up Hightower as evidence of Rand Paul’s racism.
Liberal blogs first posted allegations that Christopher Hightower had racist remarks and pictures on his MySpace.com Web page. Hightower originally disavowed any connection to the Web page; hours later, Paul’s campaign manager announced that Hightower had stepped down.
Only you and the huffers were interested in this Hightower fella. Most Americans never heard of him.

I confess to knowing the guy either and have not looked at all the facts. With that said just because you, me or anyone else doesn’t know someone, doesn’t say what Jamvet posted is untrue.
If a tree fell in the woods today and no one saw it, does that mean it didn’t fall?
Again I do not know the facts of this issue, but your rebuttal is ridiculous to say the least.

More anarchists claptrap? Must be the new flavor of the month for the McCarthyites!
You do not know what you are talking about, so you just make up stupid stuff like that.
Wake up!
White Supremacist groups and websites such as Stormfront regularly raise “money bombs” for Rand Paul and link directly to his site. He has also taken money from white supremacist William Johnson, who his father nominated for a judgeship and Carl Ford who is a member of the league of the South. His opponent Jack Conway has demanded he give back the money but while his campaign has issued statements, he hasn’t returned the money.
And quit endorsing racists…
