RNC 2012: Tuesday night thread – roll call, Ann Romney, Chris Christie

Good evening from Tampa, where Mitt Romney has just become the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party. New Jersey’s votes put him over the top in the alphabetical-order roll call of state delegations. He might have gotten there a couple of states earlier if not for a smattering of votes for Ron Paul, including three of Georgia’s 76 votes; one additional Georgia delegate was reported as unassigned, meaning Romney received 72 votes from a state whose March primary was won by Newt Gingrich.

Paul Ryan was confirmed as the vice presidential nominee, and now we’ll have a brief recess and then several speeches in a lineup packed due to the cancellation of Monday’s agenda. Among the speakers are Rick Santorum (on the welfare reform he championed in the 1990s and the Obama administration’s recent move to weaken it), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

I’ll be commenting on the speeches here, so feel free to join in below.

Hope you are enjoying your time. Take it easy on the libations.

Will check back for your comments, however I will be watching about as much of the Republican speeches as I will be watching of the Democratic speeches…….. little to none.

Personally I think the conventions are too much pep rally and not enough substance, but that is just my opinion.

one additional Georgia delegate was reported as unassigned, meaning Romney received 72 votes from a state whose March primary was won by Newt Gingrich.

I’ll admit to not being one who follows all this stuff but what’s the point of having a primary if the delegates are free to vote however they want?

I have been trouble sleeping at night. This should fix it.

And as for this little throw away line -” on the welfare reform he championed in the 1990s and the Obama administration’s recent move to weaken it”- why are you repeating a proven falsehood Kyle? Do you lack integrity, or are you ignorant of the facts? Have you not read that every credible fact checking source calls this charge total bunk?

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/07/mitt-romney/mitt-romney-says-barack-obamas-plan-abandons-tenet/

The truth is that Obama administration is responding to requests from REPUBLICAN governors who want more flexibility. I am guessing if GWB did this he would be “promoting local control” and “getting Federal government off the backs of the states”, but since its a Democrat, its eeeeeeeevil and soshulism!!!!!!!!!

saywhat: You will not be surprised to learn that I don’t think those two articles are the final word on the subject. For one, Haskins is not the only authority on what the effect of the change would be. For another, even Haskins acknowledges there is room in the change to allow some mischief. As he notes in the second linked article, it’s about trust. And given that Obama has said in the past that he didn’t like the welfare reform law, there’s reason not to trust his administration to prevent the mischief.

You will also not be surprised to learn that I don’t think it’s at all reasonable to rebut my phrase about “weaken[ing] it” with articles arguing it was wrong to say “They just send you your welfare check.” There just might be some space between those statements…

What I meant by that is obviously if three people come together and form a government, no matter how they limit it, it will intrude on some of the things they felt like they could do before the government was formed.

Yes, the founders tried their best to limit Government. Obama has said many times that is what he dislikes about the Constitution, is that it limits what Gov can do, but does not require Gov to do anything. He thinks the Gov should be required to feed the poor and provide them with insurance, free cell phones, EBT cards, etc.

Kyle, don’t repeat a Romney campaign lie; you should know better! Obama has not “weakened” the welfare reform enacted in the Clinton administration. He responded to the pleas of state governors, including Republicans, to allow the states more flexibility in administering the work/study requirements.

The highlights of this evening will be the speeches of Ann Romney and Governor Fatso. In preparation for her attempt to “connect” with women voters, Mrs. Romney has been shopping for clothes at Costco, and serving home-made cookies to some of the delegates.

I’m not sure of Governor Fatso’s preparations; a heavy meal, I suppose. He’s sure to highlight his record of fiscal responsibility in New Jersey, but I doubt he’ll mention the results of his “responsible” agenda: New Jersey’s unemployment is the 4th highest among the states, higher even than Michigan’s.

Just a reminder to commentors about lineage. President Obama’s father was born in Kenya. Mrs. Obama’s father was born in the USA. Romney’s father was born in Mexico. Mrs. Romney’s father was born in Wales.

Police in Tampa stopped a dozen anti-war protesters from entering an event attended by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after the group said it intended to arrest her for war crimes.
The protesters from Code Pink carried handcuffs Tuesday and tried to enter a performing arts center. Rice was attending an event in conjunction with the Republican National Convention. They said they wanted to make a citizen’s arrest of Rice, who was Secretary of State when the Iraq War started.

The officers told the protesters to leave because they were on private property. They went back to the sidewalk and several lay down under sheets made to look like they were blood-splattered.

The group says it will try to arrest other members of the George W. Bush administration.

Do you have to guess? Those protestors in Tampa are Anti-Bush, continuing their hate against a president who led us through the worst of times.

You don’t have to look for them just in Tampa. Their sentments creep into this blog and others. For me, that puts them right in with the KKK, the Black Panthers and drug cartels as those who do great damage to the USA.. They should be arrested for endangering the lives of others.

It was a rhetorical question. Of course I know they are simply anti-Bush. The day he left office is the day they up and disappeared into obscurity.

The irony of course is that its Obama who has committed numerous armed drone attacks against civilian villages in Pakistan- rendering of course numerous civilian casualties. If anyone is really doing anything that can be considered an atrocity or war crime it would be the bombing of civilian targets. It would be Obama that a serious case of war crimes could possibly be established.

Naw. McCain to me was a major disappointment. Washington had corrupted the man. He had been there way too long and I think Washington just rots people at the core. And McCain had little if any private sector experience to my knowledge. He was stale and just a Wash insider in my opinion.

Romney and Ryan are exciting because Romney has actually accomplished things and actually understands the economy and business. He has succeeded in several walks of life and not just as a politician. And Ryan understands the danger of our escalating debt crisis as well as or better than anyone.

Be honest. Romney’s executive experience dominates Obama’s limited experiences. And as for Joe Biden good God. The man is a walking, talking asshat of a joke. He is a national embarrassment.

As for Romney I wouldn’t let the social conservative aspect bother me if I were you. I don’t see Romney as giving a flip about abortion and stuff like that. I see him as being more focused on the economy, the debt, etc. And I think most cons right now are much more focused on the economy and the debt than the social issues. Personally I’m not that concerned about abortion, gay rights, etc. My issue is limiting the size and scope of the federal govt, getting the debt under control, and restoring economic growth. I’m much more Libertarian about the other issues and I suspect Romney is the same. One thing is for certain. If he does become potus I don’t think his priority is going to be social issues- its going to be getting the economy going and the debt under control.

He doesn’t care about that stuff. His concern is the economy, the debt, and unleashing capitalism to its fullest potential. She’s a great example of the Power of Gubmint assistance:

1998 First State Manufacturing got its feet on the ground with an initial $20,000 loan from the Small Business Administration.

1999 Earned larger contracts with assistance from local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)

2001 It got a $65,800 disaster loan to deal with business fall-out from the Sept. 11 attacks.

2002 two loans from the SBA , one for $96,000 7(A) to modernize and expand inventory.

• FSM’s 40 employees now work out of facility funded by a $1.8 million SBA 504 loan.

SBA doesn’t underwrite any loans, the capitalists on Wall Street do. You can’t even apply for a loan through the SBA, you have to go to the BB&T’s or the Wells Fargos and they give you the money.

The government is only there to bailout the Wall Streeters if you can’t make the payments. Kinda like the housing bubble that almost destroyed our country.

And nothing like it was done before this crappy government grew too big for it’s britches and left the risk to We The People.

Tundra Dude,

You mentioned 5 different loans/contracts given to this one company by taxpayer money. At what point do they become independent, quit relying on taxpayer funded money, and get conventional loans from private markets like everyone else. I’m sure its a nice story and all but why does my taxmoney have to be used to fund this particular business- or any business for that matter. I have a small business. No one funds my small agency. So why am I paying taxes to fund someone else’s small business when I myself get no funding?

Thulsa Doom

August 28th, 2012

My younger brother and my former business partner both went down to the SBA to see about getting a small business loan. Both of them literally had the SBA officer laugh at them. In a nutshell they were the wrong skin color. My brother thought about getting a female friend as a business partner but eventually just went it alone and without govt money. My friend eventually just went into business with me. Both times the guy that laughed at them was a white guy and basically just leveled with them and said it wasn’t going to happen with them unless they had a minority partnership. That was a wake up call for both of them about the govt playing field being not quite equal. Not for them anyway.

Chris Christie’s speech was excellent as well. As I understand it, Christie held back due to Isaac’s impending landfall.

I’m one of those rare birds who isn’t fond of negativity in a campaign.

Leave that to the DNC and Obama. With such a dismal record, that really is all they’ve got going for ‘em.

What I wanted to hear was how they did it.

Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia took a rather effective stab at squaring this vicious circle for Republicans. He sought to claim that what economic success there is in the country has come courtesy of Republican Governors.

“In states with Republican governors,” he declared, “the average unemployment rate is a full point lower than in states with Democratic governors. Republican governors lead seven of the ten states with the lowest unemployment rates, and 12 of the 15 states ranked best for business. While the Obama administration borrows over $3 billion a day just to keep the lights on, Republican governors have closed $65 billion in budget shortfalls, without raising taxes.”

Haley WAS good. To have a Republican woman stand there and say (about Boeing) “We fought the federal government and WE won!” was inspiring.

“The republican governors of Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia and others bragged about their economic recovery, while claiming Mr. Obama had a failed economic program. Aren’t these states operating within the USA? Two of these states in particular have benefitted from the auto bailout and the opening of credit for car purchasers. The other from government jobs in Northern Virginia and the largest military installation in Norfolk.

Truth was hard to come by at the convention last night! That’s why we need the press to provide us with it.”

Old People

“If confession is good for the soul, this convention proves the GOP has no soul, only a voracious appetite for public money. No one expects them to admit they took the US from a surplus to seven trillion in debt, that they abolished the Bill of Rights, tortured prisoners, and invaded a country without cause, that they are responsible for thousands of deaths and eighty billion in repairs after Katrina. One might welcome the prodigal, if only he wasn’t still profligate.

Lies travel far and fast, but the truth is already there. Romney’s record of buying companies only to plunder the pension funds and move them to his tax-sheltered foreign bank account marks him as the kind of robber-baron aristocrat we threw out in 1776.”

But what most voters don’t know is the way Mitt Romney actually made his fortune: by borrowing vast sums of money that other people were forced to pay back. This is the plain, stark reality that has somehow eluded America’s top political journalists for two consecutive presidential campaigns: Mitt Romney is one of the greatest and most irresponsible debt creators of all time. In the past few decades, in fact, Romney has piled more debt onto more unsuspecting companies, written more gigantic checks that other people have to cover, than perhaps all but a handful of people on planet Earth.

Successful REPUBLICAN governors, one right after the other, showing people that you can cut budgets and get rid of deficits AND spur your economies without tax hikes.

Scott Walker, Nikki Haley, John Kasich, Bob McDonald and Chris Christie proves what happens when you COMPROMISE with a side that is WILLING to compromise, or provide tough LEADERSHIP when the other side doe not, and fix the problems that faced their states.

So make all the snarky and uninformed comments you want, libs. These new GOP leaders understand the mistakes of the GOP in the 2000’s and they have proven that they are serious about leading and succeeding.

You Built Nothing

Listening to the convention speeches on the radio as I drove home with my wife today, I was shocked that they picked “You didn’t build that” as the thing they all rallied around. It’s been obvious to anybody with more than two brain cells sparking about in their head that it was a comment clearly taken out of context. I figured they were just being opportunistic and trying to score a few political points with low information voters–hey, this is politics–but I’m beginning to wonder if some of them have started buying their own propaganda. Sitting there with my wife, she wrapped up what I was thinking better than I ever could with a simple comment: “They sound like parodies of themselves.”

Yes, they do. And this is their new “normal.”

We heard only relentless and distorted Republican attacks on President Obama’s record, with no mention of how, specifically, Romney/Ryan would improve the economy or make the country safer. The truth is, they don’t have a clue how to do it. Their obsession with debt–the debt that was accrued largely by the last GOP president–makes a robust economic recovery an ever-distant dream.

Their cluelessness when it comes to foreign policy–a policy that can be summarized as: do whatever Israel wants and demonize Russia (Russia!) as the greatest threat to America–was all to evident.

No doubt the GOP honchos pleased with how the convention is going so far. They shouldn’t count their chickens. Because undecided and independent voters are also tuning in, and they’re looking for answers to concrete questions. The Republican party has just two days left to provide them.

Liberals: Defending against Romney’s hostile takeover of America.

Here’s how Romney would go about “liberating” a company: A private equity firm like Bain typically seeks out floundering businesses with good cash flows. It then puts down a relatively small amount of its own money and runs to a big bank like Goldman Sachs or Citigroup for the rest of the financing. (Most leveraged buyouts are financed with 60 to 90 percent borrowed cash.) The takeover firm then uses that borrowed money to buy a controlling stake in the target company, either with or without its consent. But here’s the catch. When Bain borrows all of that money from the bank, it’s the target company that ends up on the hook for all of the debt.

Now your troubled firm – let’s say you make tricycles in Alabama – has been taken over by a bunch of slick Wall Street dudes who kicked in as little as five percent as a down payment. So in addition to whatever problems you had before, Tricycle Inc. now owes Goldman or Citigroup $350 million. With all that new debt service to pay, the company’s bottom line is suddenly untenable: You almost have to start firing people immediately just to get your costs down to a manageable level.

Really, misterearl? Try actually listening to the speeches. Try to understand that your insipid call for “specifics” during the first night of a party convention is utterly lacking in political knowledge. A convention is supposed to be a narrative; what is the current problem (and let’s face it, there’s a lot of problems to go around with this current administration), and THEN how are you going to fix them. Bringing out successful Republican governors who have balanced budgets, kept or cut tax rates, reduced debt and deficits, and reforming the things that make government expensive is the first part of that narrative.

Voters have a choice this year.

Elect a ” Silver Spooner ” Someone who has had everything handed to him. Every door flung open. A trust fund baby with the world served up on a silver platter.

Or Obama. A mixed racial child who made it to the top based on his talent. Not his last name.

Interesting choice.

I am not saying that the new MI Governor has not had any impact, but do tell us exactly what he has implemented that overshadows what I already mentioned in terms of jobs.

For that matter, OH was also a recipient of the bailout. No where to the extent that OH was but a recipient for sure as well as IN.

You can argue and in some cases that the bailout was not what should have been done, but unless you are being naive, you can’t argue it’s direct positive impact on jobs in the states mentioned

Romney’s Bain career is a story about rising inequality. It’s telling that George Romney, Mitt’s father, made around $200,000 through most of the years he ran American Motors Corporation. Doing work that clearly created jobs, the elder Romney paid an effective tax rate that averaged 37 percent. His son made vastly more running a corporate chop shop in an industry that does not appear to create jobs overall. In 2010, Mitt Romney paid an effective tax rate of 13.9 percent on $21.7 million in investment income—around 14 times as much as his father in inflation-adjusted terms. This difference encapsulates the change from corporate titans who lived in the same world as the people who worked for them, in an America with real social mobility, to a financial overclass that makes its own separate rules and has choked off social mobility. The elder Romney wasn’t embarrassed to explain what he’d done as a businessman or to release his tax returns.

BREAKING NEWS

TAMPA (The Borowitz Report)—On the opening night of the 2012 Republican National Convention, the Presidential nominee Mitt Romney received fulsome praise for being a “regular, down-to-earth guy” from his wife, Ann, whose dressage horse, Rafalca, competed in the London Olympics.
“Mitt has never let his success go to his head,” Mrs. Romney said. “Take away the seven-thousand-square-foot house in La Jolla and the bank account in the Caymans, he’s still the same fun-loving boy who pinned a gay kid to the ground and cut off his hair.”

Mrs. Romney adopted an intimate tone as she attempted to describe “the Mitt only I know.”
“Every now and then, Mitt will give me this devilish smile of his, and I know that can only mean one thing,” she said, flushing slightly. “He just fired someone.”
In a small flub that many delegates found endearing, Mrs. Romney said, “Mitt Romney is like you or me—he puts his pants on one leg at a time. Oh, wait. He has a fellow who does that for him. My bad.”

But the nominee’s wife brought the convention audience to its feet with her closing endorsement of her husband: “I promise you that if you elect Mitt President of the United States, he will never give less than thirteen per cent.”

Humpty,

Yes, that one. You’ll note my lack of giving Snyder full credit in my post. The improvement in Michigan’s unemployment is multifactorial, and you know it as well as me. However, What I CAN say is that the unemployment rate in MI has continued to drop EVEN WHILE Snyder is cleaning the house financially. It’s far from over. MI has a long way to go, and let’s be honest: we, the taxpayers will NEVER get ur money back from our investment in GM. We are ALL now paying for MI’s job improvement…and with money that we don’t have. And the stock is still 25% of what it must be JUST TO BREAK EVEN, but I will capitulate that the government’s involvement DID improve Detroit’s short-term status to a significant degree, but–here come those words again–AT WHAT COST?

The reality may well have been that even though it would hurt Detroit more, that if GM/Chrysler were allowed to file BK, that there just might have been opportunity for other small companies to move in and make cars better. I appreciate Ford’s not taking the bailout, understanding that they were in a. Enter position than the others, but they still COULD HAVE. I just bought a Ford truck over the weekend, showing support with my $.

Having been through a BK myself, I KNOW that difficult/painful decisions are necessary to get out of a financial mess. Snyder’s making those unapologetically, and yet the unemployment is still dropping despite them.

Thanks for the exchange. While Ford did not take a bail out, they did accept very low interest loans to assist in revamping several facilities as well as the Ford CEO lobbying along with GM and Chyrsler for the bailout. They were also aided by the fact that the many suppliers were helped financially.

I give them credit for not going that route, but they have received direct and indirect help due to the bailout.

They didn’t pull that commercial about the bailouts because it was factual.
