RNC 2012: Tuesday night thread – roll call, Ann Romney, Chris Christie

Good evening from Tampa, where Mitt Romney has just become the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party. New Jersey’s votes put him over the top in the alphabetical-order roll call of state delegations. He might have gotten there a couple of states earlier if not for a smattering of votes for Ron Paul, including three of Georgia’s 76 votes; one additional Georgia delegate was reported as unassigned, meaning Romney received 72 votes from a state whose March primary was won by Newt Gingrich.

Paul Ryan was confirmed as the vice presidential nominee, and now we’ll have a brief recess and then several speeches in a lineup packed due to the cancellation of Monday’s agenda. Among the speakers are Rick Santorum (on the welfare reform he championed in the 1990s and the Obama administration’s recent move to weaken it), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

I’ll be commenting on the speeches here, so feel free to join in below.

Liberals: Defending against Romney’s hostile takeover of America.

Here’s how Romney would go about “liberating” a company: A private equity firm like Bain typically seeks out floundering businesses with good cash flows. It then puts down a relatively small amount of its own money and runs to a big bank like Goldman Sachs or Citigroup for the rest of the financing. (Most leveraged buyouts are financed with 60 to 90 percent borrowed cash.) The takeover firm then uses that borrowed money to buy a controlling stake in the target company, either with or without its consent. But here’s the catch. When Bain borrows all of that money from the bank, it’s the target company that ends up on the hook for all of the debt.

Now your troubled firm – let’s say you make tricycles in Alabama – has been taken over by a bunch of slick Wall Street dudes who kicked in as little as five percent as a down payment. So in addition to whatever problems you had before, Tricycle Inc. now owes Goldman or Citigroup $350 million. With all that new debt service to pay, the company’s bottom line is suddenly untenable: You almost have to start firing people immediately just to get your costs down to a manageable level.

“once you learn to discuss a topic like an adult, you might receive a response.”

Really, misterearl? Try actually listening to the speeches. Try to understand that your insipid call for “specifics” during the first night of a party convention is utterly lacking in political knowledge. A convention is supposed to be a narrative; what is the current problem (and let’s face it, there’s a lot of problems to go around with this current administration), and THEN how are you going to fix them. Bringing out successful Republican governors who have balanced budgets, kept or cut tax rates, reduced debt and deficits, and reforming the things that make government expensive is the first part of that narrative.

Try using something other than DNC talking points when you post.

My apology to be the one who brings up the obvious politically incorrect observation, but I don’t see anyone taking Christie seriously until he takes himself seriously.

When I look at Chrisie’s morbidly obese physique, I have to ask myself if I trust a man with an apparent death wish with the nuclear code. He’s made some very poor choices regarding his health, and while we try to rid ourselves of prejudice, how can anyone overlook this?

” A private equity firm like Bain typically seeks out floundering businesses with good cash flows.”

Operative word…….”floundering”…..which means it is already in trouble. Any idea what happens to it if they get no help?

” But here’s the catch. When Bain borrows all of that money from the bank, it’s the target company that ends up on the hook for all of the debt.”

You mean the target company that more than likely couldn’t get any money on it’s own because it was already floundering??

This crap about Bain would be fine IF all the companies they financed went out of business……they DIDN”T. Bain had about an 80% success rate……..wonder why the agenda NEVER talks about the 80% just the others that were ALREADY in trouble.

Here’s your hypothetical for the day:

Let’s say you work for a company like GST Steel and the company was in jeopardy of going out of business (it was, hence the reason IT went to Bain for help).

As an employee, you have 2 choices 1- you vote to go it on your own knowing the odds are that everyone will lose their jobs when the company closes down or 2- you take a chance on a venture capital company coming in with some much needed capital and the possibility that the company can be saved and also knowing the guys at Bain don’t work for free……..

Which CHOICE do you make?

For that matter, OH was also a recipient of the bailout. No where to the extent that OH was but a recipient for sure as well as IN.

You can argue and in some cases that the bailout was not what should have been done, but unless you are being naive, you can’t argue it’s direct positive impact on jobs in the states mentioned

Romney’s Bain career is a story about rising inequality. It’s telling that George Romney, Mitt’s father, made around $200,000 through most of the years he ran American Motors Corporation. Doing work that clearly created jobs, the elder Romney paid an effective tax rate that averaged 37 percent. His son made vastly more running a corporate chop shop in an industry that does not appear to create jobs overall. In 2010, Mitt Romney paid an effective tax rate of 13.9 percent on $21.7 million in investment income—around 14 times as much as his father in inflation-adjusted terms. This difference encapsulates the change from corporate titans who lived in the same world as the people who worked for them, in an America with real social mobility, to a financial overclass that makes its own separate rules and has choked off social mobility. The elder Romney wasn’t embarrassed to explain what he’d done as a businessman or to release his tax returns.

BREAKING NEWS

TAMPA (The Borowitz Report)—On the opening night of the 2012 Republican National Convention, the Presidential nominee Mitt Romney received fulsome praise for being a “regular, down-to-earth guy” from his wife, Ann, whose dressage horse, Rafalca, competed in the London Olympics.
“Mitt has never let his success go to his head,” Mrs. Romney said. “Take away the seven-thousand-square-foot house in La Jolla and the bank account in the Caymans, he’s still the same fun-loving boy who pinned a gay kid to the ground and cut off his hair.”

Mrs. Romney adopted an intimate tone as she attempted to describe “the Mitt only I know.”
“Every now and then, Mitt will give me this devilish smile of his, and I know that can only mean one thing,” she said, flushing slightly. “He just fired someone.”
In a small flub that many delegates found endearing, Mrs. Romney said, “Mitt Romney is like you or me—he puts his pants on one leg at a time. Oh, wait. He has a fellow who does that for him. My bad.”

But the nominee’s wife brought the convention audience to its feet with her closing endorsement of her husband: “I promise you that if you elect Mitt President of the United States, he will never give less than thirteen per cent.”
