RNC 2012: Tuesday night thread – roll call, Ann Romney, Chris Christie

Good evening from Tampa, where Mitt Romney has just become the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party. New Jersey’s votes put him over the top in the alphabetical-order roll call of state delegations. He might have gotten there a couple of states earlier if not for a smattering of votes for Ron Paul, including three of Georgia’s 76 votes; one additional Georgia delegate was reported as unassigned, meaning Romney received 72 votes from a state whose March primary was won by Newt Gingrich.

Paul Ryan was confirmed as the vice presidential nominee, and now we’ll have a brief recess and then several speeches in a lineup packed due to the cancellation of Monday’s agenda. Among the speakers are Rick Santorum (on the welfare reform he championed in the 1990s and the Obama administration’s recent move to weaken it), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

I’ll be commenting on the speeches here, so feel free to join in below.

ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – A former fifth-grade teacher implicated in a cheating scandal reportedly gave students the illegal assistance because she thought they were “dumb as hell.”

That can happen after five years of government schooling.)

Just shows the teacher wants to be a Democratic politician. They want to do it for the people since they believe they are dumb as hell, while they pick up a bonus for themselves for their trouble.

Overall, very impressed with Ann Romney’s speech. She really put the War on Women crowd back on their heels with the first part. I loved her line regarding their “fairy tale marriage” not being written with MS and breast cancer. Very good line about Mitt helping people because he considers it a privilege, not a political talking point. That one might even shut up Chris Matthews, but I doubt it. Her money line about Mitt was that “he will not fail”.

Chris Christie’s speech was excellent as well. Yeah, he took too long to mention the actual nominee, but otherwise, he threw down the gauntlet to Obama about this campaign now being about the big issues. I don’t know how this will play with the electorate, but it was refreshing to hear that kind of talk instead of the “we’ll make it all better” crap coming from Obama.

Christie made his bet last night and I figure his information is pretty good. He knows Romney is going to lose this election, and Christie just went ahead and made a speech about Chris Christie to set himself up as the next Republican nominee for president.

It’s obvious that Christie has thrown in the towel on Romney.

It couldn’t get worse than it is. The whole convention now looks to Ryan to pull it out of a slump.

The problem is that Ryan is toxic to the undecided, moderate voters that Romney desperately needs to succeed. To the extent that Ryan brings down the house, he also brings down his Party in November.

Christie could have helped Romney, but he sealed his fate.

As I understand it, Christie held back due to Isaac’s impending landfall.

I’m one of those rare birds who isn’t fond of negativity in a campaign.

Leave that to the DNC and Obama. With such a dismal record, that really is all they’ve got going for ‘em.

What I wanted to hear was how they did it.

Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia took a rather effective stab at squaring this vicious circle for Republicans. He sought to claim that what economic success there is in the country has come courtesy of Republican Governors.

“In states with Republican governors,” he declared, “the average unemployment rate is a full point lower than in states with Democratic governors. Republican governors lead seven of the ten states with the lowest unemployment rates, and 12 of the 15 states ranked best for business. While the Obama administration borrows over $3 billion a day just to keep the lights on, Republican governors have closed $65 billion in budget shortfalls, without raising taxes.”

Haley WAS good. To have a Republican woman stand there and say (about Boeing) “We fought the federal government and WE won!” was inspiring.

“The republican governors of Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia and others bragged about their economic recovery, while claiming Mr. Obama had a failed economic program. Aren’t these states operating within the USA? Two of these states in particular have benefitted from the auto bailout and the opening of credit for car purchasers. The other from government jobs in Northern Virginia and the largest military installation in Norfolk.

Truth was hard to come by at the convention last night! That’s why we need the press to provide us with it.”

Old People

“If confession is good for the soul, this convention proves the GOP has no soul, only a voracious appetite for public money. No one expects them to admit they took the US from a surplus to seven trillion in debt, that they abolished the Bill of Rights, tortured prisoners, and invaded a country without cause, that they are responsible for thousands of deaths and eighty billion in repairs after Katrina. One might welcome the prodigal, if only he wasn’t still profligate.

Lies travel far and fast, but the truth is already there. Romney’s record of buying companies only to plunder the pension funds and move them to his tax-sheltered foreign bank account marks him as the kind of robber-baron aristocrat we threw out in 1776.”

But what most voters don’t know is the way Mitt Romney actually made his fortune: by borrowing vast sums of money that other people were forced to pay back. This is the plain, stark reality that has somehow eluded America’s top political journalists for two consecutive presidential campaigns: Mitt Romney is one of the greatest and most irresponsible debt creators of all time. In the past few decades, in fact, Romney has piled more debt onto more unsuspecting companies, written more gigantic checks that other people have to cover, than perhaps all but a handful of people on planet Earth.

Successful REPUBLICAN governors, one right after the other, showing people that you can cut budgets and get rid of deficits AND spur your economies without tax hikes.

Scott Walker, Nikki Haley, John Kasich, Bob McDonald and Chris Christie proves what happens when you COMPROMISE with a side that is WILLING to compromise, or provide tough LEADERSHIP when the other side doe not, and fix the problems that faced their states.

So make all the snarky and uninformed comments you want, libs. These new GOP leaders understand the mistakes of the GOP in the 2000’s and they have proven that they are serious about leading and succeeding.

You Built Nothing

Listening to the convention speeches on the radio as I drove home with my wife today, I was shocked that they picked “You didn’t build that” as the thing they all rallied around. It’s been obvious to anybody with more than two brain cells sparking about in their head that it was a comment clearly taken out of context. I figured they were just being opportunistic and trying to score a few political points with low information voters–hey, this is politics–but I’m beginning to wonder if some of them have started buying their own propaganda. Sitting there with my wife, she wrapped up what I was thinking better than I ever could with a simple comment: “They sound like parodies of themselves.”

Yes, they do. And this is their new “normal.”

We heard only relentless and distorted Republican attacks on President Obama’s record, with no mention of how, specifically, Romney/Ryan would improve the economy or make the country safer. The truth is, they don’t have a clue how to do it. Their obsession with debt–the debt that was accrued largely by the last GOP president–makes a robust economic recovery an ever-distant dream.

Their cluelessness when it comes to foreign policy–a policy that can be summarized as: do whatever Israel wants and demonize Russia (Russia!) as the greatest threat to America–was all to evident.

No doubt the GOP honchos pleased with how the convention is going so far. They shouldn’t count their chickens. Because undecided and independent voters are also tuning in, and they’re looking for answers to concrete questions. The Republican party has just two days left to provide them.

Conventions are always full of cheap applause lines and over-the-top attacks, but it was startling to hear how many speakers in Tampa considered it acceptable to make points that had no basis in reality.

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, for example, boasted of the booming economy in his state, never mentioning that he and Mr. Romney opposed the auto bailout that has played an outsized role in the state’s recovery. (Apparently Mr. Obama’s destructive economic policies do not apply everywhere.)

Four years ago, the Mitt Romneys of the world nearly destroyed the global economy with their greed, shortsightedness and – most notably – wildly irresponsible use of debt in pursuit of personal profit. The sight was so disgusting that people everywhere were ready to drop an H-bomb on Lower Manhattan and bayonet the survivors. But today that same insane greed ethos, that same belief in the lunatic pursuit of instant borrowed millions – it’s dusted itself off, it’s had a shave and a shoeshine, and it’s back out there running for president.
