RNC 2012: Tuesday night thread – roll call, Ann Romney, Chris Christie

Good evening from Tampa, where Mitt Romney has just become the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party. New Jersey’s votes put him over the top in the alphabetical-order roll call of state delegations. He might have gotten there a couple of states earlier if not for a smattering of votes for Ron Paul, including three of Georgia’s 76 votes; one additional Georgia delegate was reported as unassigned, meaning Romney received 72 votes from a state whose March primary was won by Newt Gingrich.

Paul Ryan was confirmed as the vice presidential nominee, and now we’ll have a brief recess and then several speeches in a lineup packed due to the cancellation of Monday’s agenda. Among the speakers are Rick Santorum (on the welfare reform he championed in the 1990s and the Obama administration’s recent move to weaken it), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Ann Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

I’ll be commenting on the speeches here, so feel free to join in below.

Thulsa

He gives a big flip. He has changed so many social positions it is pathetic. They all do it and it is his right to do so, but let’s be honest here.

He didn’t change all those stances for $hits and grins.

If he knew just economic would win the day, he would have kept his stances. So I am not sure if he really is a social conservative who switched to govern Mass or he is really a moderate.

Not impressed. Granted Obama is not a prize but not impressed with Romney.

“He has changed so many social positions it is pathetic.”

They both suck,

Exactly! That’s my point. And what does that tell you? That he really doesn’t give much of a flip about those side issues if he’s constantly changing positions on them. He doesn’t care about that stuff. His concern is the economy, the debt, and unleashing capitalism to its fullest potential. And at this point in our nation’s history we don’t need the abortion debate all over again. We need the economy to grow and to get our fiscal house in order. All else is secondary.

I’m only one vote and in a red state it means little, but not impressed with Romney. A Republican Congress will have a field day with him on social issues.

I could be wrong, but my vote isn’t taking that chance

If not so many prominent social conservatives with the power they have in both the House and Senate, I would truly consider it. Since it is not the case and it is what it is, I will have to take my chance with Obama and all the warts that come with it.

they both suck,

I dunno. I don’t see much from Congress on social issues. Most of the bills I see pertain to reforming Medicare, bills geared toward deregulation, jobs bills, bills on taxes, on cutting the debt, etc. I don’t see much in the way of social issues that would concern liberals.

Bush and Cheney is more than just a former potus and veep. Its also a sort of dietary supplement. Its a form of red meat fed to frothing liberals suffering from BDS(Bush derangement syndrome). Feed them a little Bush and Cheney and they are satiated for hours on end.

Dusty,

They both suck definitely leans left. But you can still have a thoughtful, meaningful dialogue with him. You know how it is. Ya got your koolaid drinkers that can’t be reasoned with or see a point of view from the other side to save their life. And then you got people that tilt to that side but can open their minds to your point of view. They may still disagree. But they are at least open minded enough to hear what you have to say, disagree politely if they’re not convinced, and agree to respectfully disagree. They both suck is one a them types.

Thulsa,

I’m quite familiar with both kinds of liberals. Unfortunately, what we see here most of the time are the extremists. I left the Bookman blog because of the detrimental atmosphere there. I hate to see it brought here especially when it seems to be done only to disrupt the blog, not to present other political views.

Yeah. I’m a little disappointed that josef doesn’t stop by at least to say hi to Bruno. Me and aquagirl usually go at it a little but she’s good at heart and she even defended me the other day. Plus she says some downright funny things and that’s gotta count for something. I remember one time she referred to Bush as Captain McBunny pants. I still get a chuckle out of that. But some of the regulars who spout nonsense like “there’s your sign” because they can’t make an intelligent debate point need to just stay over there.

Sher Valenzuela, candidate for Lt. Gov. in Delaware, has a pretty powerful story about having an autistic son and starting a successful business in order to make the money to pay for her son’s needs

She’s a great example of the Power of Gubmint assistance:

1998 First State Manufacturing got its feet on the ground with an initial $20,000 loan from the Small Business Administration.

1999 Earned larger contracts with assistance from local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)

2001 It got a $65,800 disaster loan to deal with business fall-out from the Sept. 11 attacks.

2002 two loans from the SBA , one for $96,000 7(A) to modernize and expand inventory.

• FSM’s 40 employees now work out of facility funded by a $1.8 million SBA 504 loan.

SBA doesn’t underwrite any loans, the capitalists on Wall Street do. You can’t even apply for a loan through the SBA, you have to go to the BB&T’s or the Wells Fargos and they give you the money.

The government is only there to bailout the Wall Streeters if you can’t make the payments. Kinda like the housing bubble that almost destroyed our country.

And nothing like it was done before this crappy government grew too big for it’s britches and left the risk to We The People.

But then again, We The People used to be grown ups who didn’t need the crappy government to carry us around.

Tundra Dude,

You mentioned 5 different loans/contracts given to this one company by taxpayer money. At what point do they become independent, quit relying on taxpayer funded money, and get conventional loans from private markets like everyone else. I’m sure its a nice story and all but why does my taxmoney have to be used to fund this particular business- or any business for that matter. I have a small business. No one funds my small agency. So why am I paying taxes to fund someone else’s small business when I myself get no funding?

Thulsa Doom

August 28th, 2012

My younger brother and my former business partner both went down to the SBA to see about getting a small business loan. Both of them literally had the SBA officer laugh at them. In a nutshell they were the wrong skin color. My brother thought about getting a female friend as a business partner but eventually just went it alone and without govt money. My friend eventually just went into business with me. Both times the guy that laughed at them was a white guy and basically just leveled with them and said it wasn’t going to happen with them unless they had a minority partnership. That was a wake up call for both of them about the govt playing field being not quite equal. Not for them anyway.

Overall, very impressed with Ann Romney’s speech. She really put the War on Women crowd back on their heels with the first part. I loved her line regarding their “fairy tale marriage” not being written with MS and breast cancer. Very good line about Mitt helping people because he considers it a privilege, not a political talking point. That one might even shut up Chris Matthews, but I doubt it. Her money line about Mitt was that “he will not fail”.

Chris Christie’s speech was excellent as well. Yeah, he took too long to mention the actual nominee, but otherwise, he threw down the gauntlet to Obama about this campaign now being about the big issues. I don’t know how this will play with the electorate, but it was refreshing to hear that kind of talk instead of the “we’ll make it all better” crap coming from Obama.

I thought that Mitt was the son of a multi millionaire, CEO, Governor. Boy did I get it wrong. Turns out old Mitt was born in a log cabin that he built with his own two hands. Now that I know that Mitt had to burn his tax returns to keep from freezing, at valley Forge, I fully understand why he can’t provide them them. What are we waiting for? There’s plenty of room left at Mt. Rushmore.

It was mentioned above that Romney is too far right on the social issues, and that is certainly debatable. But here’s how I see it……those issues mean very little when an economy is adding 1.5 trillion to the debt each and every year.

Obama’s solution seems to be reigning in the engine that runs the train while Romney is ready and willing to rev up the engine. I’d much rather try to slow the train down at some point than do 5 mph for the entire trip.

And those social issues? I guess we can stand around the unemployment lines and debate those all day long since the economy will be stuck in neutral……………
