Want more from Romney, Obama? Vote with your remote

The presidential race begins in earnest over the next two weeks with the nominating conventions, and we’ll get under way with the start of the GOP gathering Monday night. Unless you don’t have cable, in which case you’re stuck with “Hawaii Five-O.”

That’s right: CBS plans to air a rerun of a remake rather than a primetime speech by Mitt Romney’s wife Ann. ABC is going with “Bachelor Pad” rather than remarks by tea-party favorite Rand Paul of Kentucky.

When you hear the GOP is just a bunch of old, white males, recall that NBC offered you “Stars Earn Stripes” instead of Alabama Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis; Senate nominee Ted Cruz of Texas; the Indian-American governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley; Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington; and Lucé Vela Fortuño, wife of Puerto Rico’s governor.

Hey, at least it’s a new episode.

This election is a critical inflection point for our country. Why would the networks bail on any of the nights? (At least the cable news channels are sticking with the news; the networks will air a single hour of convention coverage the other three nights.)

Maybe it’s because the airwaves are already thick with negative campaign spots. Peggy Noonan, in the Wall Street Journal, had the line of the campaign so far, about what folks are doing while they tune out the vitriol: “That sound you hear after the Obama attack ad is not cheers, it’s toilets flushing.”

Yet, Noonan counts herself as one who thinks voters would like to hear more from the candidates, if they talk about themselves and their plans. So do I. The conventions are one such opportunity.

Maybe the conventions are less than must-see TV because they are so stage-managed, so — ironically — made-for-TV.

It wasn’t always thus. At the 1880 GOP convention, James Garfield arrived in Chicago to nominate fellow Ohioan John Sherman and left town, 36 ballots later, as the party’s reluctant nominee. Imagine if there were even a slim possibility Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who was scheduled to introduce Romney on Thursday night, could, as Garfield did, wind up atop the ticket. (Note: As of Friday afternoon, Tropical Storm Isaac was forcing the GOP to consider pre-emptive changes to its convention schedule to minimize any disruption.)

In 1912, William Howard Taft fought off a hostile takeover bid by his fellow Republican and predecessor in the White House, Theodore Roosevelt. As late as 1964, moderate Republicans thought TV coverage of their proceedings would spark a backlash against presumptive nominee Barry Goldwater and produce a different standard bearer (they were wrong).

Either way, we know this year’s conventions won’t be the last we hear from Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. Amazingly, this was not always the case, either.

In her account of Garfield’s rise to the White House and eventual assassination, “Destiny of the Republic,” Candice Millard describes what the 1880 campaign was like for the Republican nominee:

“Although [Garfield] argued that he should ‘take the stump and bear a fighting share in the campaign,’ traveling from town to town and asking for votes was considered undignified for a presidential candidate. Abraham Lincoln had not given a single speech on his own behalf during either of his campaigns, and Rutherford B. Hayes advised Garfield to do the same. ‘Sit crosslegged,’ he said, ‘and look wise.’ “p. 59

Fat chance Romney or Obama would take Hayes’ advice today.

Nor should they. We need to hear more from them. If you agree, then, during these conventions, vote with your remote.

I have to agree with Ryan. When asked about his budget he said Mitt’s the nominee not me. We run on his program. So I’d much rather watch a rerun of 5-0 than a speech from the loving wife of a draft dodger.

I’m very interested in what Romney- Ryan have to say about energy independence and putting millions of Americans back to work in high paying non-transferable jobs that must remain in this country. I, like so many others my age, who are well beyond 55 years old who will not be affected by the Ryan Safety Net Reform Plan still want to see and take part in reforming it so future generations can have something – as in personally owning and controlling it – to supplement them fiscally when they will most need it.

Peggy Noonan wrote the speeches that President Reagan read so convincingly from the teleprompter; just so you’ll know.

The prime news channels should carry the political conventions, and voters should follow every promise and accusation with skepticism and contempt. For sure, we’ll hear nothing new, but perhaps we’ll gain some insight to the sincerity of the candidates.

Unfortunately, the economic future of our country depends on the outcome of the November elections. If Obama is re-elected, we’ll slog along in a slow, steady recovery from the Great Recession while another do-nothing Congress quarrels and postures. If Romney is elected, we’ll first give the ultra-rich and Big Business more big tax breaks to inflate the deficit and the national debt, then endure never-ending, never-concluded Congressional strife over which tax deductions should be eliminated to pay for the revenue loss.

Either way, we lose. But let’s not be caught by surprise!

Draft deferments for “ordained” clergy had to be handled in DC. Muhammad Ali requested the same deferment Willard did. Willard got his, Ali didn’t, refused to serve and went to jail. Willard is a draft dodger.

I don’t have a job now. I’ USN Retired, Vietnam vet. I heard a rumor about Willard’s “deferment” and googled it. At least 5 different sources said he got an “ordained minister” deferment for his mission of the Mormon Church. No one I know in the Mormon Church has ever heard of such a thing.

By the way, how was the beach trip? Did you skip the light fantastic over the boardwalk? Ate cotton candy and coucous and frivolous fish at famous fooderies?

Trip was great. I made some money in a big poker tournament, then turned around and blew my winnings at the crap table. Bought some salt water taffy on the Boardwalk.

I have no happy memories of that beach. Start with a cancelled reservation at a convention and go from there to a dumpy hotel

Next time, head a little south to Ocean City. Much nicer beach, no riff-raff. PB and I had a grand time playing putt-putt on the OC Boardwalk.

If there were ever a need for public access tv, political campaigns are perfectly suited for such vehicles. With Congress out of session, I see no reason why a combination of C-Span and Public Access TV can not give full coverage to both conventions.

That would give both parties equal footing with unbiased coverage. One could hear the speeches without the background noise of all the talking heads. I don’t need somebody to explain what I just heard. I am very well capable of hearing on my own.

Maybe this is something else that should be worked into a election reform plan.

Kind of ironic that the left derides conservatives as being “narrow minded” and “bigoted” and “intolerant” even as they nominate a Mormon and a Catholic. And it’s the oh-so-tolerant, open minded left that makes an issue of President Romney’s and Vice President Ryan’s religion.

Bruno,

What up? I just got home and figured I would check to see if any late nighters are up. You wouldn’t believe what I’m looking up before I hit the sack. Looking up mathematical systems for wagering- namely Oscar’s grind and Fibonacci’s system. Got any thoughts on the math behind these systems?

Bruno

August 25th, 2012
12:36 am

Oscar’s grind is a reasonable way to gamble–It’s a more mellow version of the Martingale, in which you double your bet following each loss so that you eventually make a 1 unit profit when your pick finally comes up. The only problem occurs in each system if you run into a long losing streak, whereupon you lose more than gained all along.

The Fibonacci’s system is very similar, but progresses a bit more quickly than Oscar’s grind. In the end, you can’t really overcome the house’s edge, since each bet is considered an independent trial. In other words, dice have no memory, so that the odds for each new throw are the same as for all previous throws. Gambling establishments also fight back against progressive wagering systems by capping the maximum bet you can make at any table. E.g. most $5 tables have a $500 maximum bet. In that way, you can only double your bet 6 times before running against the cap on the 7th bet.

As for me, I’ve decided to stick with poker from here on out. It’s the only game in which you have any real control. By playing perfectly at the blackjack table, supposedly you can eke out a small 1 or 2% edge over the house. However, it still comes down to luck. Small gambling edges only manifest themselves over a large number of trials, the so-called Law of Large Numbers. However, an individual gambler has trouble generating 10s of thousands of trials to make it work out well. Each gambling session is essentially a “short-run” trial, in which large variations of luck occur.

Bruno,

Yeah. I was just busy reading Fibonnaci. What I was thinking is say that if you cap your losing streak at say 5 losses. And then start over but at twice the original bet and rebuild from there. Not really sure. I’m going to use it on football and the worst I’ve ever done is losing 6 out of 7 and the longest losing streak I’ve had in football was 5.

Now that money’s free speech, we’ll be treated to political adds nonstop till November. If you find that somehow you just can’t get enough,by all means watch the conventions. Just know this the elections coming and due to the genius, of our founders, very few votes will count for much more than symbolic gestures. If you live in a blue state, And Romney’s your main man, so what. Obama will get your vote. It’s called the Electoral College. Winner takes all. I live in Georgia, that means I get to vote for Romney. I might get fired up , and stand in line for an hour or so, to make a symbolic gesture, but what about the quaint notion that every vote counts.

The election will come, and the outcome will be decided by folks living in purple states. Break that down further, and the future of America rest in the hands of people living in as few as twenty to thirty counties.I find it funny that so much money will be spent to influence so few people. I also find it a major hoot that so many people buy into the notion that their vote counts.

It will never happen, but I’d love to see a general boycott of the election by all the people living in red or blue states that disagree with their states majority view. Maybe that would shame our leaders into doing something about a seriously broken system of government. Elections shouldn’t be decided by a handful of “Independent” voters influenced by billions of dollars worth of lies and propaganda. I’ve voted in every national election since I was eighteen years old. I’m sitting this one out. There’s a limit to how much hypocrisy I can stomach.

You socialist liberals will be glad of that fact when the Conservatives regain power as the MAJORITY. Without a Republic you’d have no rights whatsoever, cause in your DEMOCRACY only the MAJORITY has rights!

Yeah Brenda Wood, the electoral college means we don’t elect our Presidents by popular vote and we use to have U.S. Senators elected by State Legislators’ rather than by popular vote. The Commission on Presidential Debates has now announced the names of 2012’s chosen referees: CNN’s Candy Crowley, PBS’s Jim Lehrer and CBS’s Bob Schieffer will preside over the three presidential debates; ABC’s Martha Raddatz will host the sole vice presidential debate. While the debate panel trumpeted the gender diversity of its picks, the chromosomal diversity is far outweighed by the political uniformity, class conformity and geographical homogeneity of the group.

Why Brett Baier (sp?) or Chris Wallace weren’t included is “a mystery.”

First and foremost, they are not debates, they are parallel interviews.

They are put on by the by the tools in the corporate lame stream media (the American version of TASS) who act as a sort of public relations agency for the US Government.

And they are orchestrated by the perverted Commission on Presidential Debates – the equivalent of the Politburo – who got their start in 1987 and are run by and exclusively for the benefit of whom? The Democratic and Republican Parties. Which is awesome for them, but terribly costly and detrimental to the nation.

So you Party Sheep keep on playing your mindless Republicrat and Demopublican finger pointing games, while the United States of America slowly goes down the toilet and the working people, the ones who built this country, get shafted decade after decade after decade.

We permit things for others people who are not citizens, and yet, we hate our own kind and do wahtever we can to keep them from this or that; we let our own government official to lie and not be accountable after all we elect them into office. Sad for many of us, we can’t even realize that we are hurting ourselves when we don’t treat one and other the same because we feel that being seperate will get us somehwere…..and it really don’t. We are angry because we are suffering at the hands of those who ave stolen from us and took what we save up and yet, those who have did that are not even prosecuted; we are angry because we are treated different fromt those wo took our money to make their and yet, we are helded accountable for the actions of those who have commited the crimes against us. No matter who speak at the upcoming convention, it really don’t matter. Why, because every one of these people are so selfish and feel so much more intellectually superior than the next person, who thinks they too are elite, that they can never come together, organize, and accomplish anything of substance.

md

That is pure bunk. A bullet does just as much damage when fired from a friendly source as from an enemy. These people are paid to protect, not to injure accidentally. If they can’t shoot straight they should get on the range and practice. If they don’t know who the bad guy is, watch for awhile before shooting the first person you see.

One of the chief arguments the lefties throw out, when someone mentions we need more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, is that you fools will be shooting yourselves or injuring innocent bystanders. But, that is ok for the police?

Reminds me of a police shoot out, I think Geraldo featured a year of so ago, of Los Angeles police shooting at a guy in a car. They had the car in a crossfire and after firing hundreds of rounds at the car, they never hit the driver and they found like two actually struck the car. If they are not any more effective with their shots than this, they should keep them in the holsters.

They are more likely to do harm than good.

And debates are only as good as the moderators posing the questions.

That’s why there really are no Presidential debates; they’re really just joint news conferences. What they really need to do is have one moderator to enforce time constraint rules and let them have at it, ask each other, anything they want to. That will never happen, though, because the talking heads have to interject themselves into the process because they see themselves as important. And any talking head involved in the debate knows if he/she can land that one “gotcha” blow against one of the participants, their stock will skyrocket in the performer/journalist world. It can be that golden ticket to more fame and more money.

I wonder how the talking heads think the country survived all those years before there was television and we had them to help the Great Unwashed “understand” what we just saw and heard.

On July 20th 1969, the dream became reality. Sadly John Kennedy would not live to see Neil Armstrong take one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. As we remember the passing of this quiet courageous man, I ‘m reminded of something Henry Ford once said, “The man who thinks he can, and the man who thinks he can’t are both right.

Neil Armstrong did not go to the moon by himself. tens of thousands unsung hero’s worked their butts off to send him there. You’d had to be there, and watch the fuzzy out of focus images coming from our television screens to fully understand that a nation walked with him that day. His accomplishment was our triumph.

I haven’t seen the video nor do I intend to watch it (I’ve seen all the folks shot that I care to see, in this life) but from the accounts I’ve read, one guy has just shot another one in the head, when police attempt to stop the guy, he pulls a pistol, not much to do but ventilate him. In that situation, you can’t wait to see if your first shot hit the mark or if somebody else’s did or even if they fired, you just fire until the guy is down. It ain’t neat and pretty like in the movies and it’s all happening at hyper speed.

One thing I would be curious to know is what kind of ammo they were using. I don’t know how the bystanders were struck but if any of them were hit by rounds going through the target, then they need to take another look at their ammo. Hollow points are the way to go, in my opinion.

For the record, I don’t insult people just because they don’t share my views . However if I’m insulted, I feel entitled to defend myself.

Many of you are no doubt familiar with business cycles. Fewer are familiar with regulatory cycles. They also exist. Unregulated businesses invariably get greedy, and engage in risky economic activities. The government invariably steps in and introduces strict new regulations to control the activities perceived to be dangerous. the predictable out come is over regulation, which once again leads to deregulation, and we find ourselves back at square one.

As Franklin told us only death and taxes are certain. To his short list I’d add regulation. A government that seeks to maximize revenues should never over tax or over regulate it’s people as such activities are counter productive to the goals of raising revenues.

The question is are we over taxed and over regulated? Reasonable people can honestly disagree with other people on these issues however, reasonable people don’t call other people lairs simply they don’t share your point of view. That’s it for me good night one and all.

If all the economist in the world were laid end to end, they would never reach a conclusion._George Bernard Shaw.

When I left off last night, I suggested that reasonable people could disagree without bing disagreeable. I like Keynesian economics because it makes sense to me. When the economy contracts, we can choose soup lines, or we can use the occasion as an opportunity to get serious about the sad state of our aging infrastructure. Our infrastructure can be compared to the roofs above our heads. when they leak, it’s time to repair them. Choosing to ignore the problem will not make it go away. What could have been a simple fix, could easily cost thousands down the road should you choose to sit on your butt and think about it. Bridges are easier to repair before they fall into the river.

I’m told that a great philosopher once felt sorry for himself because he had no woman, but then he met a man that had no hands. It’s easy to slip into self pity, but always remember that others have it worse than we do. The normally big spending European’s have tried to correct their economic problems by using austerity measures alone. the results have made our pathetic recovery look awe inspiring by comparison. Their unemployment numbers are much higher than ours, and economist that never agree on anything, agree that Europe has slipped back into recession. Many of you seem to suggest that we should adopt the policies that have proven to be general disasters for Spain, Italy and Ireland. Some of you guys on the other side of the ideological divide are obviously bright and articulate. I do not question your honesty, intelligence or integrity. I don’t know, marko. Obozo blew $800 billion on his “stimulus”, and unemployment went…UP! Federal spending went from it’s long-run average of 20% of GDP to and unprecedented 25% and unemployment went…UP! More Americans than ever before are on the dole, so those programs are spending more money than ever before, and unemployment went…UP!

Whatever you call Obozo’s approach, it has failed miserably.

I suppose one could blame his hatred for business, private property, and capitalism. And one could blame his love of regulations. And one could blame his economy-wrecking fascist power grab known as Obozocare.

The recession ended more than three years ago. Where are the jobs? Where is the economic growth?

The bottom line is that the Obozo regime has been a disaster.

Do you realize how different your views are from Jerry Garcia? Jerry and most of the other artist can`t sue you for publishing their works because you are not charging a fee, but you can bet they would not want their music associated with your views or your crowd.

In a statement, Adams said, “Today, the Rand Paul campaign became aware of some disturbing images on a social network site attributed to a campaign staffer.

“The images were not placed there by this employee but by someone posting on the site. These images in no way represent Dr. Paul or his campaign nor do they represent the beliefs of this staff member. These images are reprehensible and have no place in civil discourse.

“Paul, in a statement, said, “I have never heard a single utterance of racism from this staffer nor do I believe him to have any racist tendencies. However, it is impossible to present the ideas and reforms we need in this country with this controversy present. Therefore I have accepted his resignation.

“Recently, Hightower got into a controversy by making light of a video that portrayed Grayson as Hitler.

The Courier-Journal reported Thursday that Hightower resigned a few hours after he told one of its reporters that he had never been a member of myspace.com and that the words on the site were not his.

And here’s the problem with that line of thought……if it doesn’t work the only thing that increased is the debt.

It’s a gamble, pure and simple. Japan has been trying it for 2 decades…..their debt to gdp ratio? 200%……that takes an awful big recovery just to get out of debt……which is compounded by the ever increasing service on the debt load.

It’s not necessarily the debt that does these countries in, it’s the service on that debt that is the killer.

Of course, calling the president a “monkey” is totally ignorant, racist, prejudiced, inappropiate, biased, loony, insane and Unamerican. It in no way reflects the president but does appear to describe the one who would post such things.

But, I can’t help but recall the numerous insulting and vitriolic names and insinuations made against the president of the USA, George W. Bush, by the liberal faction of this country. Not only bloggers and reporters but cartoonists like Luckovich who frequently would draw a “monkey looking” Bush.

I think none of this is appropiate for the president of our country whether you agree or disagree with him. We elected him. He is ours until the next election and then……the ire will rise again either way.. We will always have those who were never taught anything about manners or respect.

Yes, that may be true, but those two percent get equal protection, rights, and are allowed to speak their mind. They are allowed to participate in planning and governing the party, even led the party at one time.

The other party controlled by the ruling white elites keeps their minorities on the plantation and only brings them out for photo ops and demonstrations.

First of all, I am not an atheist. You, on the other hand and as I recall, have claimed to be.
Most of the voting public do not have complex motivations. And I am not persuaded that most vote on principle. Rather they vote to get something, to have something done for them. That matters a lot more than principle in most cases. So they better question is: what do these people GET from the Democratic party? And the short answer is: benefits in all shapes and sizes (sometimes they even get tax “rebates” when they haven’t paid a dime in taxes!). The sad reality is that we cannot afford to do this on the scale we have been doing it – even if we taxed the “top 1%” at a 100% rate (not even close). But I guess people won’t realize this until the Titanic actually sinks.

I have one question fro Bruno.

How many of the artist(Hollywood crowd) that you link concur with your right wing views?

Do you realize how different your views are from Jerry Garcia? Jerry and most of the other artist can`t sue you for publishing their works because you are not charging a fee, but you can bet they would not want their music associated with your views or your crowd.

skydog–If they gave out awards for stupid posts, you would be in the running for a Pulitzer. Your idea that a person can only post–or enjoy–links to musicians with whom they agree with politically is, in a word, asinine. In particular, the Grateful Dead were notoriously apolitical in their public lives. When asked to support various anti-Vietnam protests, Jerry Garcia always turned them down, stating that he had many friends and fans who served in the military, and that he didn’t see it in strictly black and white terms.

It is a free country and you can link what you want, but don`t think that just being able to link to a cool music video let`s you in the cool club.

I’m sure you’re aware that the term “Skydog” was the nickname given to Duane Allman. For you to co-opt it on a blog, in my opinion, is about as un-cool as you can get. I’m not really sure what insecurity is driving your inane blather, but take it somewhere else, loser.

Note that ALL the talk of race originates from the lefties.

LBB–For whatever reason, the idea that a person can and should stand on their own merit is an anathema to the Libs. It’s all about group identification with them. The old, tired divide and conquer strategy. Which is one of the biggest problems in our country.

Any fair look at the two party platforms reveals a deep degree of racism over on the Democratic side. All of the “special laws” such as Affirmative Action and Hate Crimes legislation are firmly rooted on the idea that certain races are inferior than others, and are therefore deserving of special favors and protections. But because it’s so nicely wrapped up in paternalistic benevolence, it’s never identified as such.

The conservative platform is simple–treat all individuals the same. A pretty hard sell when your opposition is in the “special favors” business, unfortunately.

Americans/Republicans (two overlapping circles in a Venn diagram) believe the path to electoral success is having superior policies and beliefs: free markets, free people, personal responsibility, strong national defense.
