Want more from Romney, Obama? Vote with your remote

The presidential race begins in earnest over the next two weeks with the nominating conventions, and we’ll get under way with the start of the GOP gathering Monday night. Unless you don’t have cable, in which case you’re stuck with “Hawaii Five-O.”

That’s right: CBS plans to air a rerun of a remake rather than a primetime speech by Mitt Romney’s wife Ann. ABC is going with “Bachelor Pad” rather than remarks by tea-party favorite Rand Paul of Kentucky.

When you hear the GOP is just a bunch of old, white males, recall that NBC offered you “Stars Earn Stripes” instead of Alabama Democrat-turned-Republican Artur Davis; Senate nominee Ted Cruz of Texas; the Indian-American governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley; Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington; and Lucé Vela Fortuño, wife of Puerto Rico’s governor.

Hey, at least it’s a new episode.

This election is a critical inflection point for our country. Why would the networks bail on any of the nights? (At least the cable news channels are sticking with the news; the networks will air a single hour of convention coverage the other three nights.)

Maybe it’s because the airwaves are already thick with negative campaign spots. Peggy Noonan, in the Wall Street Journal, had the line of the campaign so far, about what folks are doing while they tune out the vitriol: “That sound you hear after the Obama attack ad is not cheers, it’s toilets flushing.”

Yet, Noonan counts herself as one who thinks voters would like to hear more from the candidates, if they talk about themselves and their plans. So do I. The conventions are one such opportunity.

Maybe the conventions are less than must-see TV because they are so stage-managed, so — ironically — made-for-TV.

It wasn’t always thus. At the 1880 GOP convention, James Garfield arrived in Chicago to nominate fellow Ohioan John Sherman and left town, 36 ballots later, as the party’s reluctant nominee. Imagine if there were even a slim possibility Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who was scheduled to introduce Romney on Thursday night, could, as Garfield did, wind up atop the ticket. (Note: As of Friday afternoon, Tropical Storm Isaac was forcing the GOP to consider pre-emptive changes to its convention schedule to minimize any disruption.)

In 1912, William Howard Taft fought off a hostile takeover bid by his fellow Republican and predecessor in the White House, Theodore Roosevelt. As late as 1964, moderate Republicans thought TV coverage of their proceedings would spark a backlash against presumptive nominee Barry Goldwater and produce a different standard bearer (they were wrong).

Either way, we know this year’s conventions won’t be the last we hear from Mitt Romney or Barack Obama. Amazingly, this was not always the case, either.

In her account of Garfield’s rise to the White House and eventual assassination, “Destiny of the Republic,” Candice Millard describes what the 1880 campaign was like for the Republican nominee:

“Although [Garfield] argued that he should ‘take the stump and bear a fighting share in the campaign,’ traveling from town to town and asking for votes was considered undignified for a presidential candidate. Abraham Lincoln had not given a single speech on his own behalf during either of his campaigns, and Rutherford B. Hayes advised Garfield to do the same. ‘Sit crosslegged,’ he said, ‘and look wise.’ “p. 59

Fat chance Romney or Obama would take Hayes’ advice today.

Nor should they. We need to hear more from them. If you agree, then, during these conventions, vote with your remote.

Kyle, I watched much of the last national convention to go beyond the first ballot. It was the Democratic National Convention in 1952 which nominated Adlai Stevenson on the third ballot. This is why the networks do not broadcast much of them. Besides, CNN, Fox, MSNBC and C-Span will broadcast most of both conventions. So the public will have a chance to watch Ann Romney’s speech. Unfortunately we will not get a chance to see George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. I would be very interested in hearing what they have to say for themselves.–Bill Clinton will be front and center.—There will be the debates to hear what the candidates have to say.

There will be the debates to hear what the candidates have to say.

And debates are only as good as the moderators posing the questions.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has now announced the names of 2012’s chosen referees: CNN’s Candy Crowley, PBS’s Jim Lehrer and CBS’s Bob Schieffer will preside over the three presidential debates; ABC’s Martha Raddatz will host the sole vice presidential debate. While the debate panel trumpeted the gender diversity of its picks, the chromosomal diversity is far outweighed by the political uniformity, class conformity and geographical homogeneity of the group.

Why Brett Baier (sp?) or Chris Wallace weren’t included is “a mystery.”

Based on what I’ve seen, they’re the only ones willing to deliver the hard-hitting questions to both parties.

not wanting to hear more from obama doesn’t equal being a racist. we simply HAVE heard from him EVERY day since he’s been elected and it’s gotten boresome and has us over 5 trillion more in the hole than when he was elected. oblamo needs to stand up like a man and say “i was wrong and I wasted far too much taxpayer money—i will learn from my mistakes” but you’ll never hear him say that so it’s time for him to go otherwise we will have a depression and it will be much worse. We may still have a depression if we can’t get things downsized to a point we can afford them in Wash. D.C.. and that will require getting harry reid out of the leadership of the senate as well as defeating obama. it’s a very simple choice–want more jobs, less welfare, and to see washington d.c. downsized—obama is not the answer—romney may be –time will tell (as well as how the senate looks).

All one needs to know about Debbie……at least her agenda is “transparent”:

“Do you at least acknowledge that the quote that you gave from “The L.A. Times” is completely incorrect?” Cooper asked, after a back-and-forth over Romney’s record on allowing for abortions in certain instances, like rape.

“No, I don’t acknowledge that. I know that is what you’re saying,” Wasserman Schultz shot back. When he started to read the quote, she interrupted, “Anderson, what I’m saying is, it doesn’t matter.”

“I think what you say does matter,” he said. “You’re quoting the LA Times and, again, you’ve misquoted them to back up a position.”

The televised “debates” are a farce for the addicts who can’t get enough Tard TV.

First and foremost, they are not debates, they are parallel interviews.

They are put on by the by the tools in the corporate lame stream media (the American version of TASS) who act as a sort of public relations agency for the US Government.

And they are orchestrated by the perverted Commission on Presidential Debates – the equivalent of the Politburo – who got their start in 1987 and are run by and exclusively for the benefit of whom? The Democratic and Republican Parties. Which is awesome for them, but terribly costly and detrimental to the nation.

So you Party Sheep keep on playing your mindless Republicrat and Demopublican finger pointing games, while the United States of America slowly goes down the toilet and the working people, the ones who built this country, get shafted decade after decade after decade.

About the only thing the “debates” are good for are the comedic value. As in the time when those three stooges raised their hands when asked if they did not believe in evolution.

Watched 15 minutes of CNN last night, Anderson Cooper, just to hear the other side. He had this Gloria Borger on and she had just finished an interview with Romney that is going to air sometime soon. When AC would ask her what Romney said about X, she would give the answer and then invariably say, “if you can believe him”. Why Romney took the time to do this interview is beyond me.

Both Borger and A/C thought the funny he told about the birth certificate was just the most divisive and negative thing anyone had ever done. Their faces were so contorted you would have thought they were watching the Batman Movie shooting live, all over a stupid joke.

CNN, is all in for Obama, apparently they no longer even feign objectivity. I guess they think they can improve their ratings by emulating MSNBC. Unfortunately there are a few thousand people who continue to watch.

With the Presidential Election drawing near; 99 percent of America’s voter are angry. You might say, angry for what; here it is, 99 percent don’t like President Obama being the president of the United States; he did not do what many of us wanted, low gas prices, jobs, economy to become better, housing market to get back where it was, etc., and now Romney is in the race bring the same issues up; not many of his own party want him or Ryan, and romney lied to his own state just as he is trying to lie in order to get elected. We all are angry because we let job go overseas, we talk with people over seas for customer service when we need our own english speaking personnel; we are saling good for other countires and can’t sale our own, look the automobiles industry of the countries right here in America. We permit things for others people who are not citizens, and yet, we hate our own kind and do wahtever we can to keep them from this or that; we let our own government official to lie and not be accountable after all we elect them into office. Sad for many of us, we can’t even realize that we are hurting ourselves when we don’t treat one and other the same because we feel that being seperate will get us somehwere…..and it really don’t. We are angry because we are suffering at the hands of those who ave stolen from us and took what we save up and yet, those who have did that are not even prosecuted; we are angry because we are treated different fromt those wo took our money to make their and yet, we are helded accountable for the actions of those who have commited the crimes against us. No matter who speak at the upcoming convention, it really don’t matter. Ryan, Romney will embrass them selves; it is like a job that you have to work and really don’t like it; but you have to understand…..it’s how the game is played. I don’t care about the party I have elected to serve; what is important is America is angry over the state of how we the
people are being treated.

That is pure bunk. A bullet does just as much damage when fired from a friendly source as from an enemy. These people are paid to protect, not to injure accidentally. If they can’t shoot straight they should get on the range and practice. If they don’t know who the bad guy is, watch for awhile before shooting the first person you see.

One of the chief arguments the lefties throw out, when someone mentions we need more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, is that you fools will be shooting yourselves or injuring innocent bystanders. But, that is ok for the police?

Reminds me of a police shoot out, I think Geraldo featured a year of so ago, of Los Angeles police shooting at a guy in a car. They had the car in a crossfire and after firing hundreds of rounds at the car, they never hit the driver and they found like two actually struck the car. If they are not any more effective with their shots than this, they should keep them in the holsters.

They are more likely to do harm than good.

And debates are only as good as the moderators posing the questions.

That’s why there really are no Presidential debates; they’re really just joint news conferences. What they really need to do is have one moderator to enforce time constraint rules and let them have at it, ask each other, anything they want to. That will never happen, though, because the talking heads have to interject themselves into the process because they see themselves as important. And any talking head involved in the debate knows if he/she can land that one “gotcha” blow against one of the participants, their stock will skyrocket in the performer/journalist world. It can be that golden ticket to more fame and more money.

I wonder how the talking heads think the country survived all those years before there was television and we had them to help the Great Unwashed “understand” what we just saw and heard.
