Why I like the Ryan pick

I was out of the house all morning and didn’t have a chance until now to blog about Mitt Romney’s pick of Paul Ryan as a running mate. But now I have time, and I must say: Ryan is an excellent pick.

I have made a few mentions during the past couple of months about my enthusiasm for putting Bobby Jindal on the ticket, and I still think he would have made a good choice. But he and Ryan, who for a long time didn’t appear to be on Romney’s short list, are like a No. 1 and No. 1a for me.

Some people will say Ryan is a risky pick because he has laid out the most detailed plan of just about any elected official — from either of the two major parties — about how to put Washington’s fiscal house in order. That means he brings a lot of targets with him onto the ticket, about Medicare in particular. To those people I say: You are crazy if you think the Obama campaign wasn’t going to make Romney answer for Ryan’s plan anyway.

For one thing, Romney already had endorsed the biggest aspects of the Ryan road map. For another, it’s already abundantly clear that the Obama campaign, which has already suggested Romney is a felon and tried to pin a woman’s death on him, considers nothing off-limits in this race. Romney could have disavowed Ryan’s plan altogether, and there still would have been a TV ad at some point showing Romney helping Ryan push Granny off a cliff.

So, I don’t think the risk is as great as you might be led to believe. But the potential reward is all there.

Paul Ryan has been the face of the GOP on these issues for more than two years now, and he has proven unafraid of taking arguments about taxes, spending, deficits, debt and entitlements straight to President Obama. He will boost tea-party enthusiasm about the GOP ticket, and he might be just the edge Romney needs to win in key Midwestern swing states: not just his home state of Wisconsin, but also Ohio, Michigan and perhaps Minnesota and even Pennsylvania. Giving him a national platform to talk about these issues and his plans to address them, and putting the Romney stamp of approval on those plans, means Obama won’t have to answer only about his mediocre record in office. He’ll also, finally, have to tell us exactly how he would tackle these problems.

Sorry, Mr. President, but the Buffett Rule won’t be enough.

It’s incredible, really, that the man who has presided over three straight trillion-dollar budget deficits, and whose proposed budgets make no attempt to rein them in, has been allowed to skate by as easily as he has on this topic. Even Obama’s own party, which still controls the Senate, makes no attempt to work with his budget proposals, much less approve them. He is very vulnerable on this issue.

Mitt Romney is not going to win a popularity contest, and he’s not going to win a small-issues election. Michael Dukakis tried to win on “competence” and couldn’t even beat George “The Vision Thing” Bush. Even the stagnant economy is not enough to put Romney in the White House — although he must still keep hammering at that issue. Incumbent presidents lose when the public thinks the challenger has a better idea of where to take us, and how to get there. Putting Ryan on the ticket means Romney intends to fight a big-issues election, and that he has the running mate to help him lay out that vision.

The referendum on our President failed with his horrible Summer so he changed the course because he was losing the base.

I think he just lost the house and if you want to address welfare, include corporate welfare and the tax code or zip it.

The gop just spent another 642 billion on defense for the mic.

… except that any fair assessment of the “plan” ends up with a conclusion that the plan results in a large deficit than the path the President has proposed. Such a plan you have in Ryan…..

Nobody can accuse Ryan of being a Washington slacker.

Mr. Ryan studied economics in college and meant to become an economist. Somewhere between stints working for Jack Kemp, a mentor, and Senator Sam Brownback, Republican of Kansas, he meandered into public policy. The inner nerd seeps through: he often sleeps on a cot in the office, says he has “every 15-minute interval” scheduled months in advance, and writes up PowerPoint presentations himself.–NYTimes

Thank you, Bill Bennett! Ryan is just what this country needs. His objective is to reform Washington, not America.

@Kyle…”It’s incredible, really, that the man who has presided over three straight trillion-dollar budget deficits, and whose proposed budgets make no attempt to rein them in, has been allowed to skate by as easily as he has on this topic.”

Spreading the manure early eh Kyle. As you well know the first of those deficits was in fact inherited from Duhbya and while the decrease has not been much it has decreased since. As you also well know the defict been driven as much by revenues as spending which was also an inherited problem.

As for Ryan, this pick puts the Medicare issue front and center which is a net negitive for Romney/Ryan. The other issue is that this is clearly an attempt to make the deficit a central message…according to Rassmussen these are the top 10 issues of this election…

Economy 74%
Health Care 67%
Gov’t Ethics and Corruption 64%
Taxes 55%
Energy Policy 44%
Education 55%
Social Security 60%
Immigration 47%
National Security/War on Terror 46%
Afghanistan 30%

Please note where the deficit falls on that list.

Paul Ryan is an anti-Reagan Republican who will be cheered by the Tea Party, and most likely alienate independents. Romeny has gone from trailing Obama by 1.8% 2 weeks ago, to trailing by 4.6% today according to the Real Clear Politics average. In those 2 weeks Romney has lost support from independent voters not Tea Party voters who are motivated by one thing only, ending Obama’s political career.

Reagan- “Deficits don’t matter.”
Ryan- Hates deficits

Reagan- Largely responsible for the Earned Income Credit that Republicans hate. “42% pay no taxes.”
Ryan- Would end the Earned Income Credit.

Reagan- Expanded Medicare
Ryan- Would gut Medicare.

Reagan- Raised taxes
Ryan- Would cut taxes on the rich

All these people who have been lambasting Romney for lack of specifics can now shut up. I pointed out all along that after 3.5 years we still have no specifics from Obama, just give Romney a chance. Obama’s featherweight economic policy is just tax the rich and improvise from their.

Now, the left will not like the Ryan Plan, but at least Romney/Ryan can say we have a plan. Obama has no plan. That in itself is pathetic when our President does not have any semblance of an economic strategy to create jobs, nor address the deficit, nor address the debt, nor how to craft a budget, nor how to reform income taxes, nor a plan to control spending.

The Ryan plan is going to be attacked as “extreme”. Some one who believes in only spending what you earn is “extreme” in today’s America. This “Extreme” plan balances the budget in something like 28 years or so. How can that be “Extreme”. What, are we supposed to wait 100 years to balance the budget? What the heck is the Obama plan to balance the budget? No existent, that is EXTREME.

Where the deficit falls on your list. #1, 74% think the economy is the number one issue. Paul Ryan believes the debt and deficit are two of the biggest reasons for the economic malaise. He is pretty good at explaining his reasoning and the fact that those have to be addressed to get the economic engine moving again.

Romney/Ryan plan is Tax cuts for the rich + making future seniors pay thousands more for Medicare = a massive loss in November for Republicans.

The truth is Team Romney made a desperate pick. Too bad they didn’t consult Team McCain for lessons learned before they did so.

Another truth is that Romney is still at the top of the ticket, is wildly unpopular except with the unreconstructed Obama haters and needs to show his tax returns already.

I ‘m sure Obama/Biden thanks the Republican Party for conceding the White House and Senate and making the election about control of the House. Kyle, Ryan was a good pick, if for nothing else it shifts the topic off Obama’s mudslinging to the real issues.

It will be hard for Obama to continue the personal destruction attack on Romney, when Ryan is out there everyday explaining how he is going to get America working and the economy moving again. Some MSM reporter inevitably will slip up and ask Obama a question about something Ryan has proposed. I’m sure Obama will try and get by with slinging mud at Ryan/Romney, or by tossing out his mumbo jumbo about going back, the “we ain’t going back” crap, but eventually he will be forced to explain how his plan/policy differs from Romney/Ryan. That is where he is on shaky ground, as he has no plan and his policies have failed and are not supported by the American people.

As you also well know the defict been driven as much by revenues as spending which was also an inherited problem.

JDW–It’s this simple: The budget for the majority of the Bush years averaged in the $2.5 T range. It spiked at the end due to TARP and some stimulus spending, both one-time expenditures. Since then, federal spending has remained in the $3.5 T range, a nearly 50% increase. Though revenue has been down, spending has gone waaaay up. We need to roll back the spending, period.

It is going to be a great race. Mitt needs to man up on his tax returns if we are going to take up tax and entitlement reform. Just get it over with, Mitt. I like to learn how Mitt avoided taxes, we all could learn from Mitt’s experience, truly.

All the same, I admit, I am one of those “idiots” that doesn’t take every deduction I am entitled to by law, because frankly some years it gets to the point where it feels immoral to do so. That 09 ruse about it being Bush’s budget is just so much horse hockey. Bush has said he never asked for all those earmarks and would have vetoed many of them. Obama vetoed none deliberately. At the time, Obama was signing off on all the earmarks and excessive spending tucked into those bills, he was advocating that Government needed to stimulate the economy. He was lobbying for the Porkulus Bill to be passed. He would have looked like he didn’t believe in his ideology if he vetoed spending in one place and lobbied for more spending in another.

He believed that Gov spending was the way out of the downturn. He owns it. He then turns around and said all this 2009 delusional spending and the Porkulus Bill should be credited to Bush. He then uses 2009 as a baseline, so all outlying years, where spending was minutely less, would look like he cut spending. A Deceiver in Chief, is what he is.

Haha! I don’t think so. I’m sure the press will give him a honeymoon period, but he is going to have to explain his votes in Congress just as both then Senators Obama and Biden had to do. So what he is actually going to explain is why he voted for two wars and a drug prescription plan that are still driving up our debt. Of course he’ll brag about voting no on the stimulus plan, but he also voted for the bailouts!

Ryan may like to think he has “ideas”, but it is just the same stuff. Perhaps Senator Ran Paul will explain why he voted not to pass the Ryan Plan due to the trillions it will add to the debt. We can then follow that with ads featuring Newt and “right-wing social engineering”.

To day we have seen and heard about Ryan being Romney choice for the VP. Now on the other hand it was said they came out swinging. No matter what is said by Ryan and Romney being best for America..when we know romney selected him to take the heat off of his past with Bain and not producing his income tax. It is hope that this can be about all of the things they want to make an issues of; such as jobs, economy, healthcare and spending. Romney and Ryan needs to be careful because Romney had an opportunity to clear up his CEO at Bain, sending jobs overseas, not producing his income taxes, and lied saying he step down at Bain when he was still in charge. Yes, we all can open our mouths and talk about what President Obama have done or did not do…..the fact remains is he is trying to do something verse not doing anything. When converse about Democratis and Republicians….that means nothing to me because both side are playing a game and they are merely human beings who can’t get their act together for the people of America. Let there be no misunderstanding, we can say what we want about either party, or continue to make jokes and critized President Obama and his administration about takiing on what was left behind; there is perhaps another side to this whole thing and when we seek to destroy or comdem one it turn the table around on us because we really don’t know what good it has done no for us personally; but what things could have been. Romney, and Ryan might think they can do better in their minds but not one have actually been down in the ditch looking at things from the bottom because they have merely looked at the icing that has not been even broken, yet! As we have found out that our own Governor here in Georgia a Repubilcan who have lied on his financial statement while he was running for the governor of Georiga also has indeed tarnish himself and Georgia Republician Party. How can one not know about the finance they are involved in and then not tell the truth! Governor Deal should resign; and so now we look at Romney, he knows he are lying and have not faced up to his responsibilities to those who might vote for him for the highest office here in the US. The question is; do you want someone who is dishonest or honest….he is going to lead you all right up to the election and then spring a trap on his taxes. I say this to all; something “wicked” thisway comes and I think it is best to not let that wickness make you vote for anyone who can’t tell teh truth. Ryan……..perhaps is just doing it to make a point or get recognized because he too is in for a rude awaken!

“Today, the Romney camp sent out a talking points sheet claiming that while picking Paul Ryan, Romney had his own budget plans. This is delusional and not credible spin. You pick Paul Ryan, you defend his budget. It is that simple. That one bullet point sums up a summer of dysfunction. I am an optimist that believes that if he explained the dangers of continuing with the Obama’s spend and spend more plan, the people can be persuaded. I know many of the voters just want to get more and more, but a rational person, at some point, has to realize that government can only confiscate so much of the money floating around, before the economy collapses.

The question is other than raising 80B from not extending tax cuts for those making over $250K, what is the Obama plan for debt and deficit? Does he just want to continue to spend until we reach the point of no return, and hope that point occurs after Jan 2017?

It’s the Conservative/Libertarian wing of the GOP that doesn’t fully support Ryan’s budget proposals because it doesn’t eliminate government bureaucracies. I think it’s 3…maybe 4 government agencies that Rand Paul’s budget proposal wants to cut.

There’s time within an 8 yr Romney/Ryan administration to do just THAT.

There is nothing conservative about “Conservatives”. Ask them how much we spend on “defense” and they don’t know because they don’t care. Ask them about the biggest government agency in the world that they created (Homeland Security) and they don’t care. Ask them how much money we give to Israel every year and they don’t know because they don’t care. The only thing they care about is deflecting blame from the past eight years of disaster cause by their vote for bush. If someone tears your house down for 8 years, do you really expect someone else to come fix in less than four years while fighting off vandalism from the previous occupiers? BTW, CNN turned into Fox after Hillary lost to PRESIDENT Barack Obama. Ask Republican scum who owns the “Federal Reserve”, they don’t know, ask republicans who created the “Federal Reserve”, they don’t know and why, they don’t know. Ask rescums, how does the “Federal Reserves” make their money and how much do they make, the rescums can’t tell you because they don’t care. The rescums are only dedicated to them making money not to the country of The Great United States Of America. Rescums have even stop pretending to care about anyone else except other rescums. I simply hope ryan will give romney enough backbone to really stand up and turn this economy around—the first years will be difficult as we try to wean ourselves off the borrowing 40 cents of all our spending. still it must be done. the way to do it is decrease the size of federal government and decrease the spending. Particularly the spending on multiple welfare programs— one program or reduced amounts for two programs is enough—we shouldn’t have people on food stamps, earned income tax credits, rent credits, free health care— there has to be limits to some of these freebies—- not to mention limits to paying healthy people not to work. simply stated that is not the principles america was founded on and should not be how we proceed as a nation. ryan, rubio, or christie all would have been good picks. any of the 3 are head and shoulders better than joe biden…. he’s a joke.

Had he been allowed to keep that money, he might have bought life insurance with it, that would have benefited the children for more than 2 years.

Ryan would like to keep Soc Sec for those who are now getting close to retirement and give younger workers the choice. Dems seem to like choice for women to terminate their pregnancy, but oppose all other choices. Why is that? Why is my freedom to choose not as important as a woman’s?

This following comment is for Dusty, who for some strange reason believes that I am cute and that I am being paid by the “Dems” for my earlier post regarding Paul Ryan and his position on Medicare. (BTW, I’d love to get paid for posting, unfortunately, not in my wildest dreams!)

From Wikipedia:

“In 2008, Ryan voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Wall Street bailout that precipitated the Tea Party movement, and the bailout of GM and Chrysler.[44]”

“On May 21, 2008, Ryan introduced H.R. 6110, Roadmap for America’s Future Act of 2008,[49] commonly referred to as The Ryan Budget…..This proposed legislation outlined changes to entitlement spending, notably major alterations in Medicare.[50] The Roadmap found only eight sponsors and did not move past committee.[51][52]”

“On April 1, 2009, Ryan introduced his alternative to the 2010 United States federal budget….It would [also] have phased out Medicare’s traditional fee-for-service model, instead offering fixed sums in the form of a vouchers for Medicare beneficiaries to buy private insurance with, starting in 2021.[54] The plan attracted criticism since the voucher payments would not be set to increase as medical costs increase, leaving beneficiaries partially uninsured.[54]… Ryan’s proposed budget was heavily criticized by opponents for the lack of concrete numbers.[56] It was ultimately rejected in the House by a vote of 293-137, with 38 Republicans in opposition.[57]”

“In late January 2010, Ryan released a new version of his “roadmap”.[58] The modified plan would: give across-the-board tax cuts by reducing income tax rates; eliminate income taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest; and abolish the corporate income tax, estate tax, and alternative minimum tax. The plan would privatize a portion of Social Security,[59][60] eliminate the tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance,[60] and privatize Medicare.[59][60]”

“On April 15, 2011, the House passed the Ryan Plan for 2012 by a vote of 235-193. Four Republicans joined all House Democrats in voting against it.[61] A month later, the bill died in the Senate by a vote of 57-40, with five Republicans and most Democrats in opposition.[62]”

Dusty, these Wiki notes are for Ryan’s first budget plan, the Road Map. As legislation, it was rejected, and not only because of Democratic nay votes, but because of Republican nay votes as well. But that’s not all. This was Ryan’s first budget plan; his second plan has received even more criticism, and again not merely from the Democrats. But don’t belive me, read the entry for yourself:

One of the big problems with Medicare is the ever increasing cost of medical care. Nobody has yet to address how to control the cost, that I can see. In my opinion, those rising costs are the real economic danger, long term.

Those costs will continue to rise so long as we have a profit-oriented medical care system. Unlike many other countries, we have physicians who, having been educated at public expense in many cases, believe they’re entitled to a quarter million dollars per year in compensation. And we have a medieval guild system run by states to ensure that only a limited number of new physicians may enter the system. Just try to get into a medical school without a recommendation from a practicing physician. There’s your main expense. The others, emanating from makers of million-dollar machines and the profit-oriented labs that operate them, are a relatively minor part of the costs.

You’re not going to get a reduction in the costs voluntarily. The foolish Medicare system of limiting reimbursement to providers merely drives more providers away from accepting Medicare. In a cartel, which the current medical community certainly is, there is no such thing as demand driving supply.

Our budget ends welfare for those who don’t need it, but strengthens welfare programs for those who do. Government safety-net programs have been stretched to the breaking point in recent years, failing the very citizens who need help the most.

Instead of letting critical health and retirement programs go bankrupt, our budget saves and strengthens them so they can fulfill their missions in the 21st century.

-Then rationalize/apologize that it was only fair, the right thing to do, etc for him to receive the benefit someone else actually earned.

If you take that outcome you see as correct, you’ve put yourself and Ryan in the position that the horrid Democrats say is the proper position for an American government, toward its citizens: Help those who need help.
Try this: Every time you’re ready to criticize a needy child who’s receiving a government benefit that they personally did nothing to earn, substitute the name of Paul Ryan for the child, see if that seems to you “the right thing to do” for an American government that is genuinely exceptional.

Trustees: Medicare Will Go Broke in 2016, If You Exclude Obamacare’s Double-Counting

The Trustees of the Medicare program have released their annual report on the solvency of the program. They calculate that the program is “expected to remain solvent until 2024, the same as last year’s estimate.” But what that headline obfuscates is that Obamacare’s tax increases and spending cuts are counted towards the program’s alleged “deficit-neutrality,” Medicare is to go bankrupt in 2016. And if you listen to Medicare’s own actuary, Richard Foster, the program’s bankruptcy could come even sooner than that.

CAN YOU SPELL F-I-C-A?

Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax is a United States Federal payroll (or employment) tax imposed on both employees and employers to fund Social Security and Medicare —federal programs that provide benefits for retirees, the disabled, and children of deceased workers.

Social Security benefits include old-age, survivors, and disability insurance (OASDI); Medicare provides hospital insurance benefits for the elderly.

The amount that one pays in payroll taxes throughout one’s working career is associated indirectly with the social security benefits annuity that one receives as a retiree.

Your co-worker had a good point on this, Kyle. The Ryan pick sets a clear tone. Many people have mentioned Ryan and his budget are unpopular. Sometimes things that are good for you aren’t popular. In this case what’s good for the country might not be popular. We’ve pretty much reached a crossroads. You can either continue down the path of government control or you can try and roll back some the massive government waste and interference.
I personally think it’s a fifty-fifty shot. This might be the point where history considers the tipping point of the United States. If you believe that the Democrat Party and the federal government has your best interests at heart (and will for all eternity), feel free to vote for President Obama and the entire Democrat ticket. Understand this; once the Democrat Party has gotten support well above the fifty percent level of dependance, from then on the mob rules. Go read your history people. It happened to Rome and it can happen to us as well. We can lose our republic as easily as they did.

“So the tax breaks are to be paid for with spending cuts to our already flimsy social programs.”

This is so grossly incorrect it is unusual even for you, marko.

Let’s break this down, shall we?

The tax RATES are proposed to be lowered, and are projected to be paid for by ELIMINATING the current tax breaks, resulting in a flatter set of tax rates and a simpler tax code. The net result is that revenues will remain the same for most everybody.

The only spending cuts being proposed is an increase in the retirement age for people who are 50 (or 55) depending on which age is being bandied about at the time, and only to Social Security. Are you now admitting that Social Security is a “flimsy social program”? If so, congratulations on finally admitting that it is in trouble, because that’s what many of us have been saying for years. Now remember, no changes to Social Security are proposed for people older than the ages I wrote above, so seniors currently on Social Security have NOTHING to be worried about.

Oh, and btw, why don’t you tell us what Obama proposes to save Social Security? Maybe something he’s tried to get through Congress since he became President 3 1/2 years ago? Should be a short list, as in NOTHING!

Medicare? No changes to the program at first, except to block grant the money to the states and let them administer it best for them. Eventually transitioning the program to something more efficient through the private sector in conjunction with intelligent health insurance reform.

Obama’s America is today’s California–complete with $100 billion taxpayer funded bullet trains to nowhere; out of control environmental extremists who have destroyed family farms and left some of the most fertile farm land in America fallow in order to protect a three inch fish; permanent high unemployment; government policies hostile to small business job creators; crippling high taxes; an abysmal real estate market; bloated government that wastes taxpayer money; endless budget shortfalls due to massive unfunded liabilities; city after city declaring bankruptcy; and a state government run by, in the words of one Wall Street Journal writer, “a brothel of environmentalists, lawyers, public-sector unions and legislative bums.”

The platform Republicans are now running on–The Ayn Rand plan. A few quotes from Paul Ryan’s personal hero, Ayn Rand, (author of Atlas Shrugged) : “The man at the bottom who, left to himself, would starve in his hopeless ineptitude, contributes nothing to those above him, but receives the bonus of all their brains…Wealth is …made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools, by the able at the expense of the incompetent, by the ambitious at the expense of the lazy….”What are your masses but mud to be ground underfoot, fuel to be burned for those who deserve it?”–Ayn Rand
Ryan purchases copies of Rand’s books for his staff as required reading.
Ayn Rand on Christian Compassion:
“Now there is one word–a single word–which can blast the morality of altruism out of existence and which it cannot withstand–the word: “Why?” Why must man live for the sake of others? Why must he be a sacrificial animal? Why is that the good? There is no earthly reason for it–and, ladies and gentlemen, in the whole history of philosophy no earthly reason has ever been given. It is only mysticism that can permit moralists to get away with it. It was mysticism, the unearthly, the supernatural, the irrational that has always been called upon to justify it… one just takes it on faith.”

As I noted on Bookman’s blog yesterday, it didn’t take long for the “Lie of the Year” to get repeated.

5 Things Obama Doesn’t Want You To Know About Ryan And Medicare

1.) The Republican reform plan totally exempts anyone over the age of 55 from any changes…

2.) The Democrats’ non-plan does the opposite. It has already slashed more than half-a-trillion dollars (Update: $741 Billion, according to the latest CBO score) from Medicare to fund Obamacare,…

3.) Medicare’s own accountants have calculated that Medicare will be insolvent within 12 years. As Democrats claim that Romney and Ryan want to “kill Medicare” or “end Medicare as we know it,” they fail to mention that the calendar and basic arithmetic will do that in the face of inaction. Doing nothing is President Obama’s plan because it tempts voters with the illusion that everything is going to be just fine…

4.) After his plan was criticized for being too partisan in the first “Path to Prosperity” budget, Paul Ryan adjusted his reforms in the FY 2013 version. He updated his Medicare reform to embrace a bipartisan solution he co-crafted with progressive Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), which maintains the original “premium support” model, but includes traditional Medicare as an option for future seniors…

5.) The Romney/Ryan plan does not impose “draconian and radical cuts.” In fact, the Republican budget increases spending. Every year. It simply slows the rate of increase…

Unfortunately, the only side willing and capable of engaging in these discussions are the GOP nominees.

“Mitt Romney is not going to win a popularity contest,…”

Generally that is what the presidential election is all about. See Bush in 2000 and 2004 and Obama in 2008.

“Putting Ryan on the ticket means Romney intends to fight a big-issues election…”

That is a problem, not an asset. The short attention span of the American voter does not allow for a complete explanation for a complicated subject. And the Ryan Plan is about as complicated as one can get in Washington. See Obama’s attempt to explain the Affordable Care Act, it is just to complicated to explain so, he just quit trying.

American elections are won by 10 to 30 second sound bites, not 30 minute explanations.

All it takes is one major national security or foreign policy crisis between now and November and these two wanabees will show how inept they are in those areas. They’ll keep using the same discredited Neocons as George W. to spew out all that neocon trash about acting tough without a clue as to the diplomatic issues and true security concerns. Syria is a good example as well as Egypt.
Neocons want us to intervene and overthrow Assad. Problem is the Syrian Christians ar on Assad’s side and fear a jihadist takeover by the Sunnis. Our puppet government in Iraq hates the Sunnis and supports Assad. If the rebels get control of the huge chemical stores Assad has, Israel will jump in while Turkey backs the rebels and has distanced from Israel. So Romney is going to jump into another Muslim civil war at the request of the Neocons? In this mess? Whose going to pay ?Don’t expect any Romney family member to serve- three generations escaped service. How soon will Romney declare Mission Accomplished? And what are we going to do when the Rebel Sunni Jihadists we backed start trouble in Iraq or threaten Israel and the Syrian Christians?? Don;t expect the Romney/Ryan team to have a clue- just follow the Neocons into another quagmire and financial boondoggle..

I am a social liberal and fiscal conservative.

Then you’re a liberal. One cannot be a Fiscal Conservative and a Social Liberal. They are contradictory positions. As another has put it:

Social Liberals view society as a field in which fairness does not exist but must be imposed. Where people are suppressed and not free to pick themselves up but need to be picked up and supported by others. It’s a society where others have “too much” and must be compelled to provide for others. It’s a Utopian vision of Society, leveling, a construct. Social Liberalism leverages “Social Justice”, redistribution of wealth (property) and Public Services as the means to an end.

…Fiscal Conservatives believe in smaller Government and a basic set of reasonable operational guidelines. The result is a less costly Government less involved in the “day to day operations” of peoples lives. Social programs are very clearly massive Administrative undertakings with a ton of overhead, duplication and cost and are typically anathema to Fiscal conservative.

Social Programs – Social Security, SNAP, MediCare, HealthCare, etc. – are massively costly. That is absolutely undeniable. Gun registries, bans, etc. are also massively costly. They also absolutely ensure that you pay for other peoples choices while being able to order them around. It’s the worst of both worlds wrapped up in the Nanny blanket of compassion and Utopia.

Some of us care about making sure that the greatest nation even known on the face of this Earth continues on.

Some of us care that the freedom and individual liberty and responsibility our Founding Fathers meant for us to enjoy should be cherished by this and succeeding generations; NOT a reverence for government.

Some of us have principles, Shame, and would like for others to have them as well.

THAT is why some of us care – today, tomorrow, and when we’re long gone.

The Catholic Bishops have taken the correct positions on abortion and marriage, however, it seems that, along with many other Americans they need to learn this simple truth: It is no act of charity to be generous with someone else’s money.

No doubt the Catholic Church has seriously sincere motives here, and thinks that such a socialist position is in line with Christ’s teaching. However, Jesus teaches us to be personally generous, not to use the power of govt. to take the wealth of one to provide for another–especially to the extent that it occurs in the U.S. today.

In the 70s, of course, Ryan’s GOP won over the white working class with these sorts of anti-welfare appeals, and at the time it was understood that the takers weren’t white. The toughest issue for today’s GOP is that increasingly, government takers are white; many are white seniors, the core of the GOP base….the more federal money a county receives, the more likely it is to vote Republican. That money might not be merely food stamps or temporary aid for needy families; it might also be crop subsidies, housing payments, Medicaid and even military spending, along with the wildly popular Medicare and Social Security.

And here I thought liberals didn’t want the church interfering in matters of government. I wish you guys would make up your mind (singular).

Just as many Catholics are opposed to the Church’s stance on contraception, it’s highly conceivable that they’ll go against the CC and vote for Ryan whether the Bishops approve or not. It’s not like the Bishops enter the voting booth with the parishioners.

Just as blacks are not a monolithic group, neither are Catholics.

This year year has been the hottest ever recorded. All across the country, crops are coming in as a total loss. Not to worry about the Red State tractor Queens though. they have federal crop insurance.

Twenty insurance companies in Bermuda, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Canada and the U.S. were paid $7.1 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds from 2007 to 2011 to sell American farmers crop insurance policies, an Environmental Working Group analysis shows. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency paid these companies for administrative and operating expenses for the federally subsidized crop insurance program.

By definition government waste is the money the government gives to somebody else. The government picks up the tab for 62% of cost of federal crop insurance. Without it many farmers would be out of business. Their farms auctioned off, and their homes lost.

unlike 1938 when federal crop insurance began, few Americans work on farms these days. most the actual labor is done by migrant farm workers. As you silly liberals can clearly see , welfare’s for millionaires. Today government steals from the rich to give to the rich. If you aint rich, they really don’t have the time to waste on you. Remember elections cost money, and from congressmen’s eyes we’re all pretty much a bunch of dead beats.

What do you what to bet that grandma’s Medicare is expendable after your elected hero pockets the check from a generous foreign insurance company?

It’s weak to say Romney and Ryan have no foreign experience- as opposed to Obama and Biden’s foreign legacy. But that aside, the election will be won by whoever can make the voters feel more secure about the future, can convince grammaw and pawpaw that they are going to continue to eat at the trough of entitlements and can come up with an easily explained way of handling the growing deficit.

Thus far, the current regime has shown very little ability to create a job-growth in any sector other than the “you want fries with that” service sector. Well, at least he has chased away a ton of Mexicanos, here for the housing boom that collapsed.

The ACA will obviously backfire on Obama- typical politicians’ reaction to an issue- throw a ton of regulations at it with little thought- remember this is a guy that was gonna kill Medicare Advantage programs. Businesses of all sizes are already looking at ways of cutting costs to address this new headache- read- layoffs.

Ryan, for all the arguments is probably the best one to be tackling financial issues- he at least has enough sense to come in outta the rain. I like this selection- young, smart as a whip, financially and economically capable of doing what needs to be done. Darn sight better than McCain’s Alaskan rogue diva.

As a business owner, I want someone who is going to give me credit for creating my biz, rather than someone telling me I didn’t do it- guvment did. Let’s give these guys a chance- this is one of those cases where the devil you know versus the devil you don’t doesn’t apply- we already have had 4 years of the devil we know and it ain’t flying too well.

And, oh yeah- those libs that keep pointing at military spending- be darn glad we do spend that money- Putin just mentioned upgrading Russia’s Air Force- if you think he wouldn’t start the cold war again, you have kept your head in the sand for too long- come up for air…and China is just one step away from expansionism- you gotta read history- they see themselves as a culture much superior to ours due to their being a 3,000 year entity while we are just children.

First, and perhaps most important, the budget would drastically change social safety net entitlement programs, shifting them away from the guaranteed benefit programs we know today to voucherized plans. The idea is to give people more flexibility on healthcare and retirement savings, but the effect could be far more severe. For Medicare, Ryan’s plan phases out the single-payer system that currently exists and replaces it with a “premium support system,” which essentially provides seniors with subsidies to purchase their own healthcare. But the vouchers are indexed to the growth of the economy, plus a little bit, while the cost of medical care has historically grown at much faster rates, meaning that over time, the vouchers will fall increasingly short of meeting the medical cost needs of seniors. This will save the government money, but shift costs back to seniors and undermine the original goals of Medicare.

Ayn Rand ended up on Social Security and Medicare when she was diagnosed with lung cancer after smoking for all those years. How hypocritical. And how typical. If Paul Ryan truly believed in hat he preaches, he would not be taking taxpayer funded medical insurance for the rest of his life. He would buy his own insurance and gambling preexisting conditions like the rest of us.

“If you ever read the “Constitution” it says “We The People” and “All Men Are Created Equal”.

Then you have obviously never read the U.S. Constitution, Robert, as the phrase “all men are created equal” doesn’t appear in the text of that document.

I think you might mean the Declaration if Independence for that phrase, son. Oops!

I suspect Tiberius wouldn’t know his constitution from The Constitution. In point of fact, it’s constipating just thinking about it.

CDC, please explain why someone should not use Social Security or Medicare when their pay is taken from them without any recourse for that expressed purpose?

Do you libs even bother to think before you post?

Wrong you are, Tiberius – the Bill of Rights are ten amendments added to (AND MADE A PART OF) the Constitution. Violating the Bill of Rights is UNconstitutional.

Please try again.

Slick Rick, you’d be reduced to a puddle of tears of despair if you engaged me in a debate on the U.S. Constitution and the Founding Fathers.

You’re not even remotely qualified.

Slick Rick, perhaps you might provide a bit more specificity regarding where, specifically, I am wrong on something?

Tiberius – Correct you are, this time on the puddle of tears I’d be in from debating the constitution with you; I’m certain it will be one of the most hilarious experiences of my life. (I think you might be correct on the despair as well, given how prevalent ignorant, know-nothing blowhards such as yourself are becoming in modern ‘Merica).

Here ya go, Tiberius; you couldn’t be more wrong on this. A direct quote:

““If you ever read the “Constitution” it says “We The People” and “All Men Are Created Equal”.

Then you have obviously never read the U.S. Constitution, Robert, as the phrase “all men are created equal” doesn’t appear in the text of that document.

All of the Ayn Rand critics should read “We the LIving”, her autobiographical novel, to see why she was so fervent in her beliefs. She and her family suffered greatly at the hands of the Marxists; that same treatment would have produced the same anti-socialism sentiment in most of you.

Slick Rick, you still have not pointed out where I was wrong. The phrase “all men are created equal” does NOT appear in the U.S. Constitution.

Nor in the Bill of Rights.

Step up your game, son.
