The accused Colorado gunman appears in court Monday. AP Photo
The suspect in Friday’s horrific shooting at a Colorado movie theater appeared in court today and didn’t speak a word. Police have said he isn’t speaking while in their custody, either, so it could be some time before we learn whether there was any kind of motivation for the man charged with murdering (as of now) 12 people and wounding dozens more.
My rule of thumb in these cases, absent any evidence, is to begin by assuming they are the work of madmen with thoughts and beliefs unthinkable to the vast, vast majority of us. Until investigators and reporters closer to the situation uncover more about the accused, I would argue that’s a good working basis for all of us.
At Hot Air, Mary Katharine Ham has compiled an excellent series of brief sketches from various news outlets about the 12 who have died so far (there are others with life-threatening wounds), complete with photos. I’m struck that survivors said five of the 12 died protecting others, including two soldiers and a Navy veteran who gave their lives.
***
This post is rather late in the day and pretty brief, and there are reasons for that. Among other things, I have a family funeral to attend tomorrow and two speaking engagements soon afterward for which I need to prepare today. I plan to post something tomorrow morning, but it may be a couple of days before I’m blogging on a regular schedule again. Thanks in advance for your patience, and please try to keep it clean on the comment threads in the meantime.

You and your family take care, Kyle.
As long as Holmes took to plan his attack, he had to have SOME motivation. I’ll be interested in hearing what it is. He doesn’t look as crazy as Jared Loughner, but looks can be deceiving.

@ curious – The NRA can’t see through the fog of bullet smoke. All the NRA cares about is defending peoples’ rights to arm themselves as much as they can, irrespective of why, where, by whom and for what. The NRA can’t “take the lead on developing a solution” since the demise of the NRA and the repeal of the “right to bear arms” is the only solution to our gun crazy problem.

Not much different than this clown with the red hair who indescriminately slaughtered and maimed a ton of innocent people in a SINGLE outing. But oh…he’s “sick” ,”deranged”, etc. No… he’s evil and an @@@hole just like many like him who cannot control their rage because they become convinced that others are trying to impinge upon their opportunities or whatever. You don’t like civilian ownership of assault rifles, move to The People’s Republik of Kalifornia. They confiscate them there (after telling you to register them “for information purposes only”
yeah, right). Or maybe New York City, home of “stop and frisk”, DC, Chicago…
Groups like NRA exist to protect our rights from those in government (and those who support them) who would take them away because some people abuse the right, such as nutjob up there. That guy looks like he’s completely gone off the deep end. (But the insanity defense most likely won’t work for him.) It’s difficult to decide what is and is not legal with regard to gun ownership. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the laws already in place vary between states and municipalities. For example, the AR-15 assault rifle and 100-round clips used by Holmes would have been illegal to purchase in Denver but are perfectly acceptable to buy in the rest of Colorado. Seems like an earnest discussion among leaders and lawmakers from across the country need to review what should be done here. IMHO no civilian should be allowed to carry and use the above items. Alas, the two Glocks and shot gun would have still done some harm; but those items I feel are reasonable items to be allowable.
The line needs to be drawn somewhere, and it needs to be universal throughout the country.

Or maybe women are just innately more intelligent or grounded in reality. Before the movies how many of these things happened? I watched a Vanguard documentary on life in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and these guys spoke to how they aqcuire their weapons though initially they were not going to talk about it. It is no different than how extremely poor communities in this country become flooded with these high powered weapons – corruption in police, politicians, and gun sellers…and other “funders”, as with these militia groups. As is said in many an “urban” crime drama with social message embedding, “they don’t make these guns in the hood”. They surely seem to find their way there though. I’m still trying to figure out where this clown got all the money to purchase all this weaponry and tactical gear! It’s all part of a larger effort; it ALWAYS is.

As I mentioned in the thread below, nearly 100 people in the US die each day due to firearms, while a similar number die each day from traffic accidents. IMO, all of their stories need to be told, yet the media will pick out one sensational story like this one and beat it into the ground.
Personally, I’m not fascinated by people like Holmes. Whatever drove him mad doesn’t really interest me, because his “solution” was to harm innocent people. If he wanted to end his own life, so be it, but leave everyone else out of it.

No need to discuss the NRA here- they have succeeded in controlling all levels of government and now can put unlimited money in advertising and lobbying with no disclosure. Both presidential candidates cower in fear of doing anything to anger the NRA. We will all be at the mercy of George Zimmermans who may or may not be sane when we go in crowded public places.(All that body armor will require a bazooka or propelled grenade- no problem if you have an NRA membership)
Of course Hollywood takes its share of blame. That trailer that has been pulled of gangsters shooting up a theater and this latest wack job truly believing he was the Joker should make us think about the culture of violence we are perpetuating. Sad – what is a six year old girl doing at a movie like that that starts at midnight. Was that responsible parenting??
” A well regulated militia being necessary for the security of a free state” . This part of the second amendment was thrown in the trash by a conservative Justice who claims to be a literalist and strict constructionist. I assume the NRA got to him and his buds too, How sad.
Anyone want to convince me that selling an arsenal of highpowered weapons and ammo to the latest wack case is within the definition of a well regulated state controlled scheme? And how secure do the free citizens of Colorado feel when they go in the future to any theater? Maybe the framers knew something we can’t apparently comprehend.

The Republican presidential candidate spoke to donors in San Francisco Sunday night at roughly the same time Obama consoled grieving families in Aurora, Colo. A gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theater there early Friday, killing 12 and wounding scores more.
Romney said he appreciates the president’s actions Sunday. And he generally avoided partisan attacks, declining to go after Obama by name “in keeping with the seriousness of the day.”

Far more people died of car accidents that day. And probably far more died of alcohol-related issues. 1. Why aren’t we making cars illegal? A crazy man with a car could easily kill a lot of people by driving in to a farmer’s market or something. 2. Why aren’t we making alcohol illegal?
Did you know that 14 people died in a truck accident in Texas that same day, yet no one is talking about them, and no one is talking about restricting Constitutional rights because of it.
And far more people die from the drug war each day. If only the anti-gun crowd would focus on preventing deaths by doing things that not only don’t restrict our rights, but actively help people, the world would be a better place.

“In March 2006, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, an Iranian-American, intentionally, as he confessed, hit people with a sport utility vehicle on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to “avenge the deaths of Muslims worldwide” and to “punish” the United States government. While no one was killed in the attack, nine people were injured (none seriously).”
The fact that there were no deaths was an element of luck. Had there been deaths involved, would those calling for bans also wish to ban cars?
Had that kid walked into the theater with a can of gasoline and a lighter, would there be calls to ban gasoline?
Evil does as it pleases for the most part……sometimes we get lucky and stop it before it occurs. More often than not, we respond to it vs prevent it. Police respond to crime scenes, they don’t prevent them.

The president got into the act too. He “condemned U.S. gun laws as ‘mistaken’ and urged Washington to review them after a shooter killed 12 people and injured more than 50 others at a U.S. movie theater on Friday,” Reuters reports, quoting his tweet: “Because of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy, the American Congress must review its mistaken legislation on guns. It’s doing damage to us all.”
If one person in that audience, seated in the right location, had been in possession of a Nine with laser sights, a whole lot more people would be uninjured and around to tell their loves that they are fine.
But the theater barred concealed carry.
Well, guess who didn’t have any problems getting their weapons through the door.

“…and the repeal of the “right to bear arms” is the only solution to our gun crazy problem.”
Based on your suggestion for repeal, are you recommending a Constitutional amendment? If so, then you are free to propose that as a means to achieve your intended ends. However, as the right of private citizens to own firearms is guaranteed under our Constitution within our Bill of Rights, ending it would need to follow the prescribed process of amendment.

If we communally adopted a policy by which you lose your status as a member of society by committing a crime like that, it might possibly reduce the number of incidences. Banish his name.

Bob–It may not be much consolation to gun-control advocates, but death by firearms have been steadily falling in this country, both in absolute numbers and deaths per 100,000 people.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0764212.html
The majority of deaths by firearm are suicides, with almost all of the other deaths committed by felons and gang members. Accidental death by firearms is around 1100 per year, not a very high number considering there are about 235,000,000 guns in the US.

‘I never thought I’d have to clarify but I guess there are some simpletons around.’
No need to clarify.
It is quite simple. As evidenced by the shooter in this case, not all gun owners are sane. Imagine that 10 people in that audience are packing…shots, panic and confusion begin. Perhaps one or two accurately assess the situation, but, there is a good chance that in the panic and confusion several inaccurately assess the situation.
One could assess that the person shooting the initial shooter is the ‘bad guy.’ Perhaps, in the dark, and amidst the panic and confusion, multiple gun carriers inaccurately assess the situation.
If it were you, you would probably soil yourself and then shoot yourself…

Adam Yahiye Gadahn, an American-born spokesman for the terror network Al Qaeda, cited America as an example where Muslims in the West have tools at their disposal for a holy war against “the enemies of Islam.”
“America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms,” said Gadahn, who is known as Azzam al-Amriki. “You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check and most likely without having to show an identification card.
“So what are you waiting for?” he asked in a matter-of-fact tone.
It’s a strange world we live in. Voters are required to show multiple documents before they’re allowed to exercise their most fundalmental right, but terrorist can buy assault weapons with no questions asked.

Rafe: For all of human history, the military has a much better record of installing tyranny than overthrowing it, although “removing the wrong man from power” is often a convenient excuse to grab it. Statements like “we might make a mistake and elect the wrong kinda guy” don’t reflect a lot of faith in democracy.

“We are fooling ourselves. That the law could allow even an inflamed lunatic to easily acquire murderous weapons and not expect murderous consequences. Fooling ourselves that the Second Amendment’s guarantee of a ‘well-regulated militia’ be construed as a God-given right to purchase and own just about any weapon of destruction you like. That’s a license for murder and mayhem and it’s a great fraud that has entered our history. . .

It’s too bad Kyle won’t let us libs “comment” like he does the wingnuts… but whatever it’s his blog… It’s frightening how ugly it gets when you all wingnuts and your ilks get together in one place.
Anyway… I can’t help but notice that those same cities with gun laws and high crime rates already have laws against criminals and gangs… ergo that approach doesn’t work either.

I wonder why middle class murderers from the suburbs are “madmen” while gang banger murderers from the inner city are thugs.
The guy isn’t mad. He’s a killer. That’s it.

What can I say… I’m a product of the GA education system… that’s what happens when you teach wingnuttery in schools instead of the 3 R’s…

“md: So expressing sympathy with the boy’s family, the people who have to live with the loss of their son, is premature? If Zimmerman is telling the truth, does that make the death of a teen-age son any less disturbing to his parents?”
Mr B….one can express sympathy without jumping to conclusions and possibly putting one’s foot in one’s mouth.
Let’s pretend that Martin turned out to have had more in his background than was/is currently known……suppose the guy was found to be a real honest to goodness thug…….
Now, apply his comment and see how it sounds…………that is why a smarter man would choose his words more carefully.

Weighing in on the gun control question, I don’t blame my tooth brush or my dentist when I get a cavity and I don’t blame uns for Holmes killing 12 people and injuring scores more. Do we need to make a better toothbrus? Definitely! Holmes should have never been able to stockpile the number of bombs, chemicals and weapons he did in such a short period of time. However, the ultimate responsibility lies with James Holmes and no one else. Not the NRA, not gun manufacturers, not hollywood for making movies and defintiely not his parents (who of course pushed him too hard and didn’t hug him enough).

Wow, surprise he is not a Mulism from the brother hood, we have so many idiots like M. Bachman and scum bag R. Limbaugh and the racist Glen Beck, who are so bent on accusing people of color as terrorist yet all the major killings have been inside terrorist of sick white males.

Amazing, Travon Martin had no record was only 17, walking home not bothering anyone yet he was killed and the right wing nut jobs accuse him of being a thug, and the killer goes on misinformed fox and make up a story because a dead man can not talk and the right makes him hero.
This monster kills 12 people and all you hear from the right he had a mental break down, and the right wonders why people around the world look at them as a bunch of bigots and hypocrites””””

I do not think that Holmes is a madman. I do not believe he is legally insane. I believe he is putting on an act.
This man knew what he did was wrong. When he was caught he warned the cops that his apartment was full of explosives. This proves he knew right from wrong. A true madman would have seen no need to warn the cops.

Slick Rick: repeal of the “right to bear arms” is the only solution to our gun crazy problem.

The fascist Democrat wet dream of dismantling the Bill of Rights is not an option.
And tell us why we should believe any effort to ban possession of firearms would be any more successful than the war on drugs.
