Obama steals Lugar’s bad-news thunder

On a day when the political sob stories ought to focus on Dick Lugar, whom Indiana Republicans voted out after 36 years in the U.S. Senate, the bulk of the bad news from yesterday’s primaries instead concerns President Obama:

1. North Carolina is a swing state. Four years ago, Obama won the state by 14,177 votes out of more than 4.2 million cast. Last night, almost 200,000 voters in the state’s Democratic primary voted against him, even though no one else was even on the ballot. A constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, publicly opposed by Obama despite the mixed signals from his administration on the issue, passed easily, 61 percent to 39 percent.

2. Wisconsin is generally not considered a swing state — it’s typically been safe territory for Democrats. But 2010 saw the election of Republicans to a majority of the state’s legislative seats and the governor’s mansion. That GOP governor, Scott Walker, currently faces a recall election fueled by labor unions still steamed about his reforms of public-sector unions. In yesterday’s primaries for the recall, Walker, who faced only token opposition in the GOP primary, won almost as many votes as all five Democrats combined. What’s more, the preferred candidate of the fired-up unions finished second in the Democratic primary. The recall is considered a bellwether for partisan enthusiasm, both within the state and nationally given the large outside interest in the battle between Walker and the unions, and turnout yesterday does not bode terribly well for Democrats in the state. Nor does Walker’s $25 million war chest. If Walker wins, it just might be a springboard to making Wisconsin competitive in November.

3. West Virginia is not a swing state. Despite its track record of electing Democrats to the U.S. Senate — no Republican has won a Senate race there since 1956 — it has delivered its presidential electors to the GOP candidate in three straight contests and is a cinch to do so again this year. Still, the most embarrassing result from yesterday’s primaries is that a man who is slated to spend Inauguration Day in a federal prison in Texas won 41 percent against the Obama — a.k.a. the President of the United States — in the state’s Democratic primary.

No wonder famed Democratic strategist James Carville is telling his own side to “wake the you-kn0w-what up.”

It looks as though, after all the emotional and intellectual political arguements have come and gone, the voting majority who just want a lighter shade of pale in the White House will trump all reason and intellect.

Carlos: Taking out the race car so early? What will there be left to throw out there down the road. Sadly, I guess you can’t believe that there are those “cons” who don’t like Obama simply because we think he’s doing a poor job and disgaree with his policies. If race were truly the key, why would cons like me vote in a heartbeat for Gen. Powell or Condy Rice? Oh yeah, I forgot. Because they disagree with the Jacksons and Sharptons of the lib world, they are uncle toms or whatever. Vote the candidate on his/her strengths, positions, etc. Folks like you I guess will always look at skin color first.

Did Obama campaign at all in WV? Run any ads asking people to vote for him? Spend any money on a primary that he was going to win regardless of who opposed him?

Obama doesn’t need or care about WV this time around. Even Rove’s “Obama’s going to stomp Romney” map shows Romney winning WV. It’s not a bellweather of anything other than a slow news day after we dispense with the Lugar story.

WI is more interesting, but only as a “warning shot” to Democrats thinking they had the governorship wrapped up. They have more work to do. Obama’s ground game will help them in November, but they need to step up and get people fired up again about replacing Walker. Walker’s got lots of outside money to spend and lots of PAC money is flooding into the state. I guess that’s good for their sluggish economy, right? Maybe Walker really is good for Wisconsin jobs, all evidence to the contrary.

If you had read my post a little more carefully, you would have seen I didn’t use the word “cons”. I said “voting majority”.

I, too, would vote for Colin Powell, but not Condi Rice.

DANGIT! Posted this downstairs:

Seriously!!??!!

Moderate Dems Bail on Obama in Primary Votes

The bad news for Obama is that Keith Judd, Inmate No. 11593-051, serving a 210-month sentence at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas, also outperformed the president’s 2008 West Virginia primary showing.

Judd, who lists himself as a “Rastafarian-Christian” and his career as “Founder, World Peace Through Musical Communications Skills,” took 41 percent of the vote among West Virginia Democrats and carried 10 counties.

This was about hardening resentment against Obama on the state’s top economic issue – Obama’s mounting restrictions on the mining and burning of coal – as well as a general sense among blue-collar, socially conservative Democrats that there isn’t a place for them in Obama’s party.

I didn’t know Rastafarians wore collars…more like T-shirts.

Too funny!

To those who will come on here claiming that Indiana is such a red state that they’d never elect a Democrat: You’ll need to brush up on your (recent) history. Obama won Indiana in 2008 and the state consistently had a Democratic senator until Evan Bayh chose to retire in 2010. The Democrat definitely has a chance in Indiana with Lugar out of the way.

And Obama might not win Indiana this time, but the electoral map is nearly insurmountable for Romney right now. He’d need to take ALL of the following states that Obama won last time- Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida. PLUS one more state (Nevada, etc.). That’s not going to happen.

Gee, when I click the provided link those 199427 votes are for “No Preference (DEM). Therefore, these folks would vote Democrat regardless. But I guess you see that as a vote against the President.

But there are also a lot of people who don’t like Obama not because of his policies, but because he is black. Trust me. I live in the South. I hear it all the time.

The Republican party is a mix of both. To what ratio is unknown.

I would say in the South the ratio of racist’s is much higher than in other parts of the country but again its something impossible to gauge.

People don’t admit to being racist on exit polls.

They (women) tend to be reactive and overly emotional as opposed to responsive and logical.

Hillary whooped Obama in the 2008 WV primary. Almost 20% of white voters there said race was an important factor in their vote. Unsurprisingly, most of those people voted for the non-dark candidate. So there is indeed a sizable contingent that openly admits why they vote against Obama.
