Romney closes out the primaries by attacking Obama’s unfairness

The news from last night was not that Mitt Romney easily swept the five states that held primaries; that was assured once Rick Santorum left the race, if not before. Nor was it the prospect, which is being confirmed this morning, that Newt Gingrich would also drop out of the race as a result.

No, the news is that Romney finally gave the speech some of us have been waiting for him to give. (Click here to see a video of the speech, which lasted about 13 minutes, or here to read the prepared remarks; he didn’t stray too far from them.)

The heart of it was the contrast he drew between himself and President Obama. First, what he said about the president:

Government is at the center of his vision. It dispenses the benefits, borrows what it can’t take, consumes a greater and greater share of the economy. You know, with Obamacare fully installed, government would have control of almost half of the economy, and we would have effectively ceased to be a free enterprise society.

This President is putting us on a path where our lives will be ruled by bureaucrats and boards, commissions and czars. He’s asking us to accept that Washington knows best — and can provide all.

We’ve already seen where that path leads. It erodes freedom. It deadens the entrepreneurial spirit. And it hurts the very people it’s supposed to help. Those who promise to spread the wealth around only ever succeed in spreading poverty around. Other nations have chosen that path. It leads to chronic high unemployment, crushing debt, and stagnant wages.

And then there’s his counteroffer:

I have a very different vision for America, and for our future. It’s an America driven by freedom, where free people, pursuing happiness in their own unique ways, create free enterprises that employ more and more Americans. And because there are so many enterprises that are succeeding, the competition for hard-working, educated, skilled employees is intense, so wages and salaries rise.

I see an America with a growing middle class, with rising standards of living. I see children even more successful than their parents — some successful even beyond their wildest dreams — and others congratulating them for their achievement, not attacking them for it.

The repeated mentions of free enterprise, and the good line about congratulating people on their success rather than attacking them for it, are welcome. But here’s where Romney signaled an important theme leading to November:

This America is fundamentally fair. We will stop the unfairness of urban children being denied access to the good schools of their choice; we will stop the unfairness of politicians giving taxpayer money to their friends’ businesses; we will stop the unfairness of requiring union workers to contribute to politicians not of their choosing; we will stop the unfairness of government workers getting better pay and benefits than the very taxpayers they serve; and we will stop the unfairness of one generation passing larger and larger debts on to the next.

When an opponent — as Romney correctly said Obama would do — wants to run not on his record but on distractions and distortions and fuzzy notions of “fairness,” you hit back at what other people might consider unfair. And there is a great deal of unfairness to be found in Obama’s conventional liberal positions, some of which Romney catalogued.

This is a promising start to turning Obama’s raw populism on its ear.

An excellent synopsis of a good speech. I am glad to see Romney accurately defining the problems we face and from where they come. A “promising start” indeed to a new beginning.

getalife: The U.K. has increased spending each of the past four years. You read that right: Each. Of. The. Past. Four. Years. Check the EU’s official stats agency, Eurostat, if you don’t believe me. Britain lowered the “tycoon tax” this year after the tax increase last year didn’t bring in nearly the expected revenue. That is indeed a lesson for America. The U.K. may be slipping into recession, but it has nothing to do with the GOP economic plan because the U.K. didn’t follow it.

Oh, and before you bring up Ireland … from the same source: Dublin did in fact cut spending in 2011 by 27 percent — after it raised spending in 2010 by 33 percent. The net effect is that spending over the past two years combined was 15 percent higher than it would have been if it had been kept flat at 2009 levels.

The only country that has experienced true austerity is Greece. Spending has been cut sharply there — by 5.5 percent last year and 8.4 percent the year before. It’s biting the economy hard, for sure. But you may recall that the reason for the cuts is that Greece had increased spending by so much before 2009 — by 8.5 percent a year (!) on average between 2002 and 2009 — that it couldn’t keep up and had to be bailed out by the rest of the EU in order to make its debt payments. (On, and btw: Spending in 2011 was still higher than it was in 2007.)

So, if we’re going to talk about what’s happening here vs. there, let’s invite the facts to join us.

“… and we will stop the unfairness of one generation passing larger and larger debts on to the next.”

Well we started doing this in 1981. And the train keeps going faster and faster with no one putting on the brakes.

So I welcome this hint that maybe, finally, someone will lay out a detailed plan that both stops deficit spending and starts paying off the $16 trillion debt.

We started this debt trip with the idea that cutting government revenue and increasing government spending would result in smaller and smaller deficits. We have been doing this for 31 years and somehow, someway, we still believe it will work.

He, like so many rich men of his ilk, talk a good line, but when the record is examined closely, not so good a deed was done. Obama is not the one being unfair. He isn’t the one who pushed and pushed for unequal tax treatment for the top 1-2%; he isn’t the one who supports the GOP war on women and their rights. Obama didn’t take us to two immoral, unnecessary wars of choice, which to this day are not paid for. Obama isn’t the one striping public schools of their resources, so as to give to private and religious schools – without accountability to anyone. Obama isn’t the one who isn’t trying to enforce immigration control; but only so much can be done with the money allocated from Congress. Obama isn’t the one being so unfair as to try and limit the voting rights of everyone, but white males and their wives. When asked why they were now ready to cast their vote for Mr. Romney, a majority of those Republicans polled “strongly agreed” with the statement, “Why do you think? No one else is f***ng running anymore. Stop asking such stupid f***ng questions. I don’t need this s***.”

Underscoring the sense that he is now the presumptive nominee, the Romney campaign unveiled a new slogan this morning, “You Have No Other Options Anymore. Start Dealing With It, Losers.”

“He, like so many rich men of his ilk, talk a good line, but when the record is examined closely, not so good a deed was done. ”

Yeah, ’cause balancing budgets, working across the aisle, actually creating jobs without government money and finding a legal way to provide healthcare for his state are really, really, bad deeds.

“Obama is not the one being unfair. He isn’t the one who pushed and pushed for unequal tax treatment for the top 1-2%; ”

And yet the top 1%-2% still pay most of the taxes. Doesn’t sound very unfair to me.

“he isn’t the one who supports the GOP war on women and their rights. ”

Nor does Romney, because the on GOP war on women is a figment of the DNC’s imagination.

“Obama didn’t take us to two immoral, unnecessary wars of choice, which to this day are not paid for. ”

No, he just hasn’t stopped them, and continues to pay for them. Which is worse? No difference to me.

“Obama isn’t the one striping public schools of their resources, so as to give to private and religious schools – without accountability to anyone. ”

Of course, taking money and students from public schools will drop the associated costs of public schools, therefore your argument is simply silly.

“Obama isn’t the one who isn’t trying to enforce immigration control; but only so much can be done with the money allocated from Congress. ”

Yeah, let’s blame somebody else for the failures. And btw, maybe he shouldn’t be suing states who ARE controlling immigration better than he could ever hope to do.

“Obama isn’t the one being so unfair as to try and limit the voting rights of everyone, but white males and their wives. ”

And yet no one else is, either.

“Romney is just a good ole boy from MA, who wants to relive the “glory days of the 1950 and 1960’s” at everyone else’s expense.”

Hate to clue you in, Rockerbabe, but Romney was merely governor of Massachusetts. He’s lived more outside of the state than inside the state in his lifetime, and he doesn’t speak with our accent.

And there is no such thing as a “good ole boy” from north of the Mason-Dixon line. You can be a Townie (if you were born there), a hack (if you spent your entire lifetime in a local or state government job that didn’t require you to work), a layabout (otherwise known as your common variety Democrat), or one of The Beautiful People (liberals like John Kerry, anybody named Kennedy, or Elizabeth Warren whose first words out of their mouths are usually, “Do you know who I am?”).

“Should he be shouting that “government is the problem” while expanding the government and jacking up the national debt, like Reagan? ”

Ayn, don’t quit your day job, ’cause history isn’t your strong suit. Reagan jacked up the debt due to increased MILITARY spending on his part, and some increased social spending he had to give Tip O’Neill in order to get his plan to bankrupt the Soviet Union through a Democrat-controlled Congress. His actions to cut Federal red tape is what largely contributed to the robust economic recovery he had vs. the anemic recovery the current Disaster-in-Chief has managed.

“And, RomneyObamaCare will ruin the country will it? Why is Massachusetts doing just fine after several years of it?”

Fact is that Romneycare relies on two things that Obamacare can’t match; a public / private partnership between government and insurance companies, and a massive influx of Federal health dollars to keep Massachusetts from increasing taxes exponentially to cover their costs. Oh, and doctors aren’t accepting new patients in Massachusetts, so waiting times are now increasing for non-emergency care. Bottom-line, Ayn, Romneycare isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I was not for Romney, but like all other Conservatives knew all along I would support him if he is the nominee. His speech of last evening makes it sooooooooo easy to do so.

What a contrast. Obama and gang goes around pointing fingers, blaming Bush, dividing the Nation, with no responsibility shown for their failures and their only goal not to improve America but to get Obama reelected.

It will be Romney in a landslide.

getaclue, you’re once again engaging in deflection.

Your conclusion (based on that economic genius, Jay Bookman) is that Europe is in a recession due to austerity, while my contention is that they are finally crumbling under the inevitable weight of their excessive social programs that cannot be sustained.

Your inability to understand “cause” and “effect” is simply stunning.

Where do many of our consumer goods come from, getaclue?

China.

Since I’ve already warned you about some pretty bad retail numbers about to come out, why do you think China is slowing? Because we’re heading into our double-dip recession here. Retailers are not maintaining near the levels of inventory as they did just 2 years ago, because they, unlike you and this administration, actually saw the coming signs in Europe and the U.S. in lower consumer spending.

For us, its all about the stimulus money finally running out after 2 years, no longer artificially propping up employment for governments who refused to cut positions or increase taxes to pay for them, and now those alleged 3 million created or saved are about to go away.

You can’t prime the pump with debt, getaclue. You need economic policies that will allow the private sector to expand, and that is what this current Disaster-in-Chief has failed to provide.

Yes, we must not allow government to compete for workers from the same pool of employees that private business draw workers from.

And we must not let government pay employees a competitive wage. What do yo want, intelligent people working in government? No, we can’t have any of that. Speaking of government workers, FOX had a piece last evening where the government is paying off student loans as a hiring tool. The program predates Obama to when, apparently, there was a shortage of certain skills and the loan payoff was a recruiting tool. But the program has continued even for skills like attorneys where they are a dime a dozen. But, not to worry, remember Obama did a complete review of all agencies to save money and tighten the belt.

How does that make you feel? The government using your money to pay other people’s debt?

I think if you listen carefully (or in your case, listen at all) you’ll not hear one word from Romney regarding any issue of “competitive wages”. What you’ll hear is that when government workers get paid MORE than their private sector counterparts, that is the problem.

Especially when you consider those covered by civil service, which is nearly the equivalent of a lifetime guarantee of employment (something the private sector does not enjoy), maybe wage equivalence is even a bit too much for public workers.

Have you forgotten how it feels to be out of debt, able to pay your mortgage, going to your family doctor, a hassle free voting place, pride in the armed forces, older friends retiring but not fired, advanced education within the means of many, religion appreciated, and gasoline at an affordable price? Have you really forgotten all of that?

That is what Romney is talking about. He wants American values back in place. and our freedom to be the great value we once appreciated. That is what he wants and that is what I want. I hope you feel that way too.

“I know from personal experience that Obama lied when he said he had given up drugs in college, and I can attest in detail to the fact Obama engages in homosexual sex,” Sinclair said.

In addition, Sinclair says he believes that the murder of Donald Young – the homosexual choirmaster at Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago – was an attempt to protect Barack Obama’s secrets. Young was murdered shortly before the 2008 Iowa Caucus.

Good speech..but Romney is starting off with some inherent problems the GOP refuses to address. Most in the Republican party don’t really like Romney, but are voting for him in an ABO (Anyone But Obama) vote. That’s not really a good place to be. Second, there are those conservatives who feel ignored by GOP leadership and they are angry enough they could vote against Romney to prove a point to the establishment. Third, while his religion shouldn’t really matter, there are those conservatives who simply will not vote for a Mormon. You may never win them over on the religion issue, but must win them over politically.

Kyle, you are wandering off into economic analysis again. Not your strong suit. The plain fact is Europe is essentially following austerity program you like and is failing big time. Austerity without growth equals deflation equals Depression. Economics 101. I know you hate to admit but John Maynard Keynes was the biggest economic genius of the 20th century and his theories have consistently stood the test of time. Republicans have been getting us more and more into trickle down for the last 30 years, especially under President Sluggo (i.e. “W”) and the test of time has proven it to be both a failure and a fantasy. “Bush did it” is so outdated it is laughable as we watch the current president fail at everything he tries. Meanwhile you folks look everywhere but President Obama to place blame.

Bush is not the man to blame. Obama is the president now and his failures are his and not those of anyone else. No amount of your squirming changes that.

Hey Tiberius——How about this====From the Good Doctor———-
.
For your “Anyone but Obama” friends and family.

While it is true that the other three Republican candidates would, to some degree, roll back this country’s incessant march under Obama toward European SOCIALISM, they would NOT be able to thwart the more sinister march towards FASCISM, which is occurring at the same time.

The term “fascism,” of which there are many different kinds, comes from the Latin word “fasces” which means a “bundle”, and thus has been connoted to symbolically mean, a bundling or a concentration of power, as what happened in Italy, Germany, and many other sordid examples in recent world history.

An early stage of fascism being seen here in America is “corporatism”. Corporatism is the “bundling” or the collusion of big government and big corporation interests into one sleazy, diabolical, authoritarian rule.

American corporatism has been building in this country for over 100 years.

I list the complex, or the “bundle”, first, then a government agency, and then a private corporation, in that bundle:

Military Industrial Complex / Department of Defense / Blackwater

Prison Industrial Complex / Department of Justice / Correctional Corporation of America

Food, Agricultural & Chemical Complex / FDA / Monsanto

Medical Industrial Complex / FDA / Pfizer

Financial Industrial Complex / Department of the Treasury / Federal Reserve

(Yes, the Federal Reserve is the privately-owned portion of that bundle.)

And of course, the dark list goes on and on.

As mentioned earlier, all of these concentrations of power have been slowly building and networking amongst themselves, for over 100 years, making it easier for a dictator to rise in their midst and wield the power of them all. (cont.)========

Thomas Heyward Jr.

April 25th, 2012
8:06 pm

Accordingly, over those same 100 years, the office of the president and the executive branch in general, through legion shadowy and unchecked ‘executive orders’, has slowly aggregated absolute power, and thus there is the potential for a malevolent dictatorship to suddenly arise, and without warning.

All it would take is one psychopath who manages to slip through and win the election.

In short, Corporatist America in 2012, is just ONE parallel universe from devolving into a full-blown fascist dictatorship.

A shift towards European socialism, although bad enough, in my view, and a form of passive slavery…is a CAKEWALK when compared to the potentially violent and extremely dangerous ‘fascist shift’ (Naomi Wolf’s term) that COULD conceivably occur in the future if we don’t stop it in its tracks.

Because Obama is oblivious to the marionette strings that are controlling him, and he understands NOT these forces, if re-elected, he would be unable to stop either march toward SOCIALISM or FASCISM, and both would continue, unabated, spiraling dangerously and apocalyptically out of control.

Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich, if elected, would roll back SOCIALISM to some degree, but because they are bought and paid for by the Corporatists, they are oblivious to the march towards FASCISM that is occurring at the same time, so they would be powerless to stop it even if they could, as it grew, unabated, and spiraling dangerously—and apocalyptically—out of control.

Ron Paul…and ONLY Ron Paul, if elected, can—and would—STOP THEM BOTH (socialism and fascism) COLD…in their disgusting, slimy tracks!

What people are not learning from history is that such levels of economic inequality as is present now leads to more economic problems. When 1% of the population controls more than 60% of its wealth, the middle class goes into decline….and so does the nation!! This has occurred primarily under Republican Administrations…starting with Hoover…and progressing thru the Bush years!! Now, the GOP has placed as its standard bearer the Poster child for income inequality!! Romney has lied so much, how do we know what the truth really is??

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-l-borosage/romneys-big-lie_b_1451541.html

Romney’s Big Lie

Mitt Romney opened the general election campaign last night in Manchester, New Hampshire, using his acceptance speech to unleash a fierce attack on Barack Obama’s “false promises and failed leadership.”

He said little about his own policies, preferring to contrast his free enterprise vision with what he called Obama’s government-centered vision.

And buoyed by his victory, Romney felt free to issue a clear defense of privilege.

At the heart of the contrast Romney drew with Obama was the big lie. After the absurd charge that under Obama, we will have “effectively ceased to be a free enterprise economy,” Romney made his defense of privilege:

We’ve already seen where this path leads. It erodes freedom. It deadens the entrepreneurial spirit. And it hurts the very people it’s supposed to help. Those who promise to spread the wealth around only ever succeed in spreading poverty.

What world is he living in? In America, extreme levels of inequality have led to economic calamity. The Gilded Age extremes of the 1920s — when the richest 1% owned about 44% of all private wealth — were followed by the Great Depression. The excesses of the Bush years — when the richest 1% owned nearly 40% of all private wealth — were followed by the Great Recession.

And of course, the greatest period of growth and widely shared prosperity in the US came in the decades after World War II. And in those decades, public policy purposefully “spread wealth around.” The top end tax rate was at 90%. With labor unions representing over 30% of the workforce, workers shared in the benefits of rising productivity. The GI Bill gave an entire generation of veterans access to college and affordable housing. Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican president, built the interstate highway system vital to national competitiveness. Wall Street, shackled by New Deal reforms, went decades without a major bank crisis.

And from 1945 to about 1975, America grew together. The rich got richer, but the incomes of middle and low income Americans grew faster than those at the top. The broad middle class — the heart of what made America exceptional — was built step by step.

That period ended when America made a conservative turn in the mid-1970s, consolidated under Ronald Reagan. Top end tax rates were slashed; finance deregulated; domestic investments starved; trade policy turned over to multinationals; a fierce war waged against labor unions. Exactly the policies that Mitt Romney champions today.

The results are very clear. Growth slowed. The rich captured ever more of its rewards. Workers didn’t share in rising productivity. Incomes for most Americans stagnated. The middle class sank. The economy was racked by Wall Street excesses. And the 1% now control as much wealth as 90% of Americans. In 2010, the 1% captured a staggering 93% of all of the income growth in the society.

You got it wrong, Mitt. We can understand why you’d be confused. As Upton Sinclair famously said, “it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

Mitt has amassed a personal fortune of over 200 million dollars and pays 14% tax rates on $20 million in annual income, so it isn’t surprising that he confuses this history. Spreading the wealth around is in the national interest, but it surely isn’t in his.

I Report (-: You Whine )-: mmm, mmmm, mmmmm! Just sayin...

We Democrats fought hard to rally our Nation behind a comprehensive energy policy and a good program, a new foundation for challenging and exciting progress. Now, after 3 years of struggle, we have that program. The battle to secure America’s energy future has been fully and finally joined. Americans have cooperated with dramatic results. We’ve reversed decades of dangerous and growing dependence on foreign oil. We are now importing 20 percent less oil — that is 1 1/2 million barrels of oil every day less than the day I took office.

I can’t believe people keep throwing those numbers out there in today’s global economy……this isn’t granddads 40’s or 50’s, those numbers are purely for class warfare/political purposes.

For the reality, wealth is a global equation, and those here with money are NOT taking it from others below them……..it is NOT an either/or equation.

For truth, dig into the $500 billion ANNUAL trade deficeit to get an understanding of where the money is going……and folks, it is you the consumers that is sending it there.

Yes, that’s correct, you are sending your own money to others around the globe……and they thank you greatly.

I love it when HDB and the columnists he reads chide Romney for not telling the American people what he’s going to do in his speech this week. Heard the same comment from a talking head on MSNBC, which shows you the value of that type of comment.

First and foremost, it was a victory speech. Victory speeches are written for specific policy discussions; they are written to fire up the people watching him, which it obviously did, or you libs wouldn’t be so darned worried since it was given.

Second, Romney has spent the last 9 months telling people who would listen what his policies are going to be. If you don’t like them by now you never will, so asking him to provide more of the same is a waste of his time, and yours. There’s not a chance in Hell that Romney is going to say anything to sway the partisan hacks like HDB and AmVet who blindly support possibly the worst President since Jimmy Carter in our current Disaster-in-Chief, so stop wishing for something you aren’t going to listen to anyway.

To the non-partisan independents and the GOP faithful, Romney’s speech provided the same message of hope and change that Obama promised 4 years ago, but far more eloquently than Hope & Change – the slogan, because he doesn’t have to tear a whole class of people apart and divide us into groups.

That speech scared the crap out of you libs because it was so damned good and it spoke to EVERYBODY.

Deal with it.

JohnnyReb: “How does that make you feel? The government using your money to pay other people’s debt?”

This has been going on for decades and was the brainchild of Congress. It was originally designed to get students into education, math and science so there would be more public school teachers and more folks in engineering and science overall, so as to also support the space and related research programs. But since, so many of the GOP wanted someone else to pay for their kids’ ivy league educations, other professions were also included in the program.

Since public teachers are now another object of the GOP’s war on women [80% of teachers are women], folks like you are complaining. And, because teaching is such a hazardous profession now days, so many leave before the first five years are up, it all seems like such a waste. And, now that the GOP and its business allies have declared war on science [evolution, global warming, tobacco related cancers, women's health, etc.] the sciences are being dragged down by politics.

What a shame. . . the need for highly skilled specialist and the debt needed for the average student to get those skills is astounding. Little good has come from the GOP’s contract on America. Just denial of the truth facing everyone on this planet, a backlash against inclusion of ALL citizens in this country, the almost out-of-reach cost of higher education, stagnation of wages and salaries and the decline of benefit package. And you are worried about the debt some lawyer got allievated of by a government program aimed at increasing the skills of Americans!

Where were you when the Congress gave the 1% all of those tax breaks that has exploded the country’s debt? Where were you when Dubya took us to two immoral, unnecessary wars and didn’t bother to activate Selective Service or fund the wars? But your “America-loving majority” comment – I guess the other side does not love America – shows your true colors.

I can’t think of any better way to divide a country than one side telling the other “you don’t love this country.”

My father was a democrat all of his life. He was shot out of a plane in WWII and spent 366 days as a prisoner of war, weighing 98 pounds and suffering from Malaria when he was released. He spent 9 months in a hospital when he returned to the states just to return home. I would LOVE for you to have walked up to him and even insinuate in the slightest bit that he didn’t love his country because of his politics. Even at 85 years old, he would have mopped the floor with you. During the Bush years, when some republicans were insinuating they loved this country more because of their politics, while calling democrats unpatriotic, he said it made him sick to his stomach.

So go ahead Burnout, wave your flag and keep saying your side loves this country more. Then complain the democrats are trying to divide the country. But be careful. You may be standing beside an old democrat war veteren that will put you on the ground.

In 2008 the heads of the money center banks went to Washington and said the economy would collapse without help from the government. Bush’s secretary of the treasury worked with congress (mostly democrats) to enact TARP. The economy did not collapse, and many banks have paid back their TARP funds. From the 1930s to the 1980s regulations and the insurance funds (FDIC and FSLIC) protected the financial system without bailouts. Deregulation led to the S & L bailout and the TARP bailout. Romney opposes government regulation, so he is wrong.
A sergant coming back from his fourth tour in Iraq has a higher tax rate than an investment banker. Romney supports this, and he is wrong.
When vets apply for assistance, they are applying for an entitlement they have earned. Giving them a voucher is a slap in the face. Romney supports this, and he is wrong.

Again, would love for you to had been able to stand – face to face – with my father, and tell him republicans do love this country more and that democrats want this country to fail and just watch the show.

Think about it, you would have been telling a man that gave up a year of freedom from his life that YOU love this country more than he does and that HE wants the country to fail.

This shows how brainwashed and utterly ridiculous you are – for you to truely believe that. I check this blog out every now and then just to get a good laugh. And post some things just to get you riled up. Just for fun.

But you guys that are on here everyday, spouting the same crap over and over, day in and day out. It’s pathetic. What kind of lives do you lead? Is this what you need everyday? You have nothing better to do daily but insult people? I feel sorry for the people that must interact with you on a daily basis.

But I’m done. It was fun while it lasted. But when someone like Burnout can say republicans love this country more and they want America to succeed more than democrats, and actually BELIEVE it? Why would anyone want to interact with such an unstable, ridiculous man, even on a blog?

How miserable your life must be.

The candidate that wins will have BOTH a specifically stated core set of values AND a number of specific policies relevant to our nations current problems and/or national debates that are in accord with those policies–which, importantly, turn out to be the same agenda as the “silent” majority of the voters.

On healthcare, Romney is going to need a specific and viable alternative to Obamacare –at least an overview–to successfully argue against it.

On economics, Romney is going to need to NOT support the Reaganomics “trickle down” policies that have p*$$ed on the so-called 99% for quite some time. He is going to need some very specific policies that can be sold as friendly to the 99%. Hint: not taxing either the corporations or the rich, individually, is NOT a policy that is likely to pass w/any but the one-issue “values voters”. If he wants business to thrive and he feels not taxing them is the answer, the he needs to tax that income using the same tax tables as “earned income” –the same rates paid by the educators, the first responders, the members of the military, the white collar workers, the construction workers and the unskilled laborers–people that risk their lives and/or sanity doing their jobs while the rich moneyed investor/employer class just risk money* (the love of which* is supposedly a root of evil).

The so-called “war on women” is not really a GOP thing as much as it is an evangelical puritan-like “women should be submissive” and “life is sacrad” thing. For Romney to win the women vote, he would be well-served to relate his philosophy on the subject by stating SPECIFIC policy decisions/plans and explaining how they adhere to the philosophies of “individual liberty”, “equal right under law” and/or “separation of church and state”.

For example: If either candidate wants to add a caveat that he personally opposes/supports abortion BUT as president of the entire nation he must act in the best interest of the nation in futherence of “individual liberty”, “equal right under law” and in order to respect every individual’s right to their own religious beliefs, must support “separation of church and state” and, for this reason he proposes………..?………..whatever. Then hope that most of the voters paying attention agree.

The candidate that best makes this argument in favor of his positions will get the women’s votes.

“Change” alone likely will not sell again. The candidate that wants to win is going to need to get specific.

Romney has been quoted as saying that if he tell people what he will do, he will not get elected. The reality is that if he does NOT tell people what he intends to do and hopes this election will be an up or down vote on Obama, it will not make Romney more electable.

Given the extreme mistrust of Mormens by many of the evangelicals upon which the GOP depends for votes, many may sit out this election. In that case and if they decide the devil they know is better than the devil they don’t, Romeny has no hope of winning if he cannot convince the independents with specifics.

Wouldn’t having presidential candidates set forth very SPECIFIC policy plans instead of a fistfull of slogans designed to appeal to different constituencies be a breath of fresh air?

I listened to Willard’s speech for about ten minutes and heard nothing of any substance that I can remember that told me definitely how he was going to solve any of our major problems. I thought I was listeneing to an Obama speech in 2008 about hope and change.

I get it that he disagrees with Obama on everything and belkieves government cannot solve our economic problems. However It is also clear that Willard will do everything possible to give big business more breaks and ability to profit without regulation- what the heck does that have to do with fairness for anyone other than the companies. but Kyle tell me how the public will react when the insurance companies start rebating over a billion dollars in excess profits due to Obmacare that would have gone to their executives? And how will the public react if the five conservatives on the Supreme Court cut off those rebates.? I do not see that scenario playing into Willard’s portrayal of himself and Republicans as models of “fairness.”

Give me a break- the Ryan budget is not about “fairness”. It is about economic survival. That fainess nonsense is no different than saying Willard can relate to Southerners because he ate grits for breakfast or Obama saying he will bring hope and change..
Lets hear some specifics .Where does he stand on student loan repayments besides making them harder to get in the future. ? Where does he stand on our real estate crisis? What exactly will hhe do besides eliminate Obama’s programs?

We need lawyers to craft our contracts and civil/legal documents. We need lawyers to help protect us citizens against a elected legislature that is hell-bent on undoing women’s rights, minority rights and upgrading corporations to personhood, while simultaneously stripping women of their actual human personhood, treating immigrants like disposal trash, etc. Lawyers do a lot of good and sometimes not so good; but if you happen to get into trouble with the police; a lawyer is your best friend for awhile.

Thomas Hayward Jr. (re: fascism), I agree with you. The terms “free market capitalism” and “free enterprise” is a gross misnomer for what actually exists in this country and on a global scale.

Years ago I watched a documentary on Joe Kennedy and his ilk and the decisions that were made by the moneyed investor/employer class that had created the collapse of 1929. They decided to seek control of government because their calculation was that government, not just money, would begin to be the power in the next era.

It now seems that after government began to respond to “we, the people” in a way that served to limit profits (EPA, social safety net, etc.), they began to redirect power toward the financial institutions–including the repeal of Glass-Steagall–while deliberately consolidating political power to maximize profits. (”How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich” Rolling Stone NOV 2011). The Dems were abusing power during the “cold war” to hold and increase their own political power–they just lost the favored status support of “big business” because, in their pursuit of votes, they supported the policies big business found impeded their ability to make huge profits.

Now, government is too bankrupt for “we, the people” to have the power via vote alone that existed even a couple of decades ago. With Citizens United in force, the moneyed can legally focus their money on undoing environment laws and any other laws that limit profits. Advertising is an extremely profitable industry because it works and gullible people will often vote for the most familiar name. The devil you know supposedly being better than the devil you don’t. The economy makes people more willing to not object to reversing the progress in environmental laws and/or social safety net. Combine this with the citizen apathy borne of no draft, a re-invigorating of racism and bigitory by the federal government’s refusal to address the illegal immigration problem (in pursuit of cheap labor), and apply that to several generations of youth taking it for granted that their generation would be better off than the prior generations, then combine that with the war-mongering and fear-mongering of the neo-cons and the military industrial complex, and you have the making of Big Brother. (As someone else commented in response to a blog and/or news article recently, if Wells had named his book 2012 instead of 1984, he could have been a prophet.)

Big Brother is government encroaching upon the privacy and individual liberty of the people, with government controlled by big business for the profit and power of the few over the many.

It is not beyond the possible that we are on the cusp of a modern “feudal” society with a relative few landed gentry and almost everyone else working for them, barely subsisting as they struggle to survive. In fact, since so few people actually own their own land debt free, and given the ongoing foreclosure rate, it can be argued that we have already begun that new era.

We can hope that this silent “crisis” situation hits a serious number of formerly “comfortable” people in an up-close and personal way jolting the “silent majority” of Americans out of voter apathy before it is too late–before the corporations can regularly steal elections with impunity –as, arguably, they may already have begun to do.

The problem is that because big business has, for quite some time now, been controlling both the Democrat and Republican parties and, thus the rules to control who controls government, we already seem to have no VIABLE alternative to the bought-and-paid for status quo.

If Big Brother can continue to control the message to control the panic when those that formerly considered themselves (economically) “middle class” are forced by circumstance to shake off the apathy, big business will have “won” their ongoing “class warfare” against “we, the people”.

The GOP has already co-opted the “Tea Party” protestors and the influence of businesses not wanting interference with profit are already shutting down OWS protestors. Now there is a move afoot to control the internet.

Unfortunately, “We, the people” that love freedom, may well have already lost to economic fascism.

So there you have it, fellow Wingfield bloggers. THIS is the “depth” of the liberal mind. Insults. Deflection. Misdirection.

ANYTHING BUT what you asked for. They can’t articulate ONE actual policy of Mitt Romney’s – let alone write semi-intelligently about their concerns regarding it.

So it begs the question: “Why are you here, losers?” Don’t bother answering that. I will.

You’re trolls, wasting your lives on a conservative blog with one goal in mind: Insult and denigrate anyone who doesn’t agree with you.

“we will stop the unfairness of government workers getting better pay and benefits than the very taxpayers they serve”
———————————————————————————–

This is what the current Republican vision, and what capitalism, itself, unchecked by the public sector and by government, can instill in citizens, i.e., one sector of Americans pitted against another, jealousies created by sizing up what you have as opposed to what I have, and a worldview of “everyman or woman for him or herself,” which is a vision of “survival of the fittest.”

Why not, instead, create another vision, one in which America’s citizens understand that “we are all in this together” and that every American might have, provided by their government, basic human rights, and safety nets of security, that all contribute toward receiving, such as those outlined by Franklin Roosevelt in his last inaugural address, referred to as America’s “Second Bill of Rights.” The people, themselves, should decide, through their votes, what they want from their government and what they want their government to be. They are, in fact, their government – a representative government.

Please view FDR’s 2nd Bill of Rights Speech Footage provided on YouTube in the link, below. What American would not support what FDR proposes? Roosevelt’s last line: “For unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace in the world.”

=======================================================

My beliefs in human rights and the “common good” (in the connotations of “true for all” or “shared together”) have been developed through studying the thoughts and worldviews of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. Would you consider either of those leaders to be “ordinary” or “unexceptional?” As I had mentioned in my earlier post this morning, FDR spoke of a Second Bill of Rights for all Americans and he secured Social Security for all Americans in their old age. Eleanor Roosevelt modeled her own message, entitled, “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” of which she spoke and advocated throughout the world via the United Nations, upon her husband’s Second Bill of Rights for all Americans.

In all due respect, you are making associations of thought that are simply stereotypical in nature. The associations that you draw, in fact, do not have to correlate. One can be both a leader of avenues and innovations of his or her talents, and also be the beneficiary of society’s social programs, which benefit all.

Our 1st assistance program is taxpayer funded education……of which 1/3 of kids are currently choosing not to participate. This in turn places a burden on society that threatens the very programs put in place for the benefit of all. Current estimates have dropouts costing society $300 billion annually……that’s per year for those that may have dropped out early.

Now, apply the same scenario to the other programs in which folks are choosing not to participate in and one can see we have a problem…….and selfish is NOT restricted to one end of the spectrum.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that fairness will ever be seen in polictics (whether Republican or Democrat). The politicians will always be looking to feed the hands that place them in office, and over the past two decades the general publics involvement in elections are dwindling while the large corproations and lobbying groups involvement in the elections keeps increasing.

Today, Lucko draws Romney as dismissing Bush. WHAT! Bush? Luckovich wants to point fingers as BUSH?

Well, Bush does remind me of one thing and Mary Elizabeth quoted FDR’s words that picture it. He said, “For unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace around the world!”

Bush knew that. He kept us safe after terrorism delivered its supreme surprise attack. Terrorists hit around the world but never the USA again.

Dusty,

Your adulation of President Bush is touching, but you arguments are not very convincing. Let me say first, however, that while I think GWB was not a good president, I acknowledge that he was not universally a bad one, and I do not think he is a bad person. He did some good things. But there is the undeniable fact that his terms ended with a very deep recession. Those, like you, who always claim that Obama is responsible of everything happening during his term, should therefore admit that Bush’s presidency was a failure.

Your main argument seems to be that he kept us safe. Well, technically, he did not. 9/11 happened on his watch. I do not want to get into arguments about whether he could or could not do something to prevent it, or whose fault it was. I just want to make two points about your claim. One, that other presidents have “kept us safe” against terrorism, and second, that “terrorists hit around the world but never the USA again” is a rather silly argument. After such a big success of 9/11, there is no reason to believe, and nom evidence, that that had the intention. But again, I do not want to disparage Bush’s effort to keep us safe, even though I very much disagree with some of the methods. It is a complicated world we live in.

And in this complicated world with serious issues at stake, it is more than a little petty to harp on such things as the use of Air Force One, Not only in view of the policy of reimbursement, which Real Athens has explained, but because other presidents, including GWB, used to be routinely accused of the same.

Your allegiance to anything liberal is also touching. You choose to ignore the fact that the debt of this country has risen greatly under President Obama. You choose to ignore that he is a very expensive president in his personal ventures, whether it be vacation of re-election efforts. You choose to ignore that this country has made so little progress under his guidance that it is listed in miniscule numbers. You also choose to ignore the fact that Obama is following in many of Bush’s programs although Obama promised before election to change all of them. Is he too then a bad president because he has continued so many times that Bush started such as Guantanamo, troop withdrawal, security? That we are facing another recession just starting again under Obama? That construction is at a standstill and the price of homes is at lowest level? That the president shows little pride in his own country?

Your moderate tones somewhat quell your criticism but they do not change the fact that you are as blind as a bat to any failure of our current president. You follow the familiar steps of blaming the previous president for what has happened the last three years.

I suggest you open your mind to what is happening NOW before you start blaming the past for most failures.

Surely you don’t forget that GWB had precise warnings by Deputy Clarks for more than 3 months about the 9/11 attack and did nothing. Yet, in his very first Cabinet meeting he was asking for something to give reason for an attack on Iraq.
If you missed all this, then you haven’t enough gunpowder to enter the explosive discussion.

“Well, Bush does remind me of one thing and Mary Elizabeth quoted FDR’s words that picture it. He said, ‘For unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace around the world!’ ”
=========================================================

In the context in which FDR spoke those words, he was addressing the social security of America’s citizens. He said, for instance, that having a job that pays an adequate wage, having decent housing, having healthcare and a good education, and knowing that one has social security in one’s old age would all create security in the American people. He believed, in other words, that if Americans were left socially bereft and insecure, they would not be able to advance peace in the world.

Watch the video, below, to hear FDR’s words which will give the meaning of his closing statement in context: “For unless there is security here at home, there cannot be lasting peace in the world.”

Dusty,

I am back at least for responding to your amazing insight into my psyche @2:48 pm.

“You choose to ignore the fact that the debt of this country has risen greatly under President Obama.”

How exactly do you know that I “choose to ignore” that fact? Actually, I am well aware of it.

“You choose to ignore that he is a very expensive president in his personal ventures, whether it be vacation of re-election efforts.”

Again, your clairvoyance is quite amazing. However, at this point you at least are absolutely right. I also ignore this petty argument. Would you perhaps care to calculate the percentage of the deficit due to the President’s “personal ventures,” to cost of which, I am sure, you know in detail.

“Is he too then a bad president because he has continued so many times that Bush started such as Guantanamo, troop withdrawal, security?”

Is that a critique of Obama?

“That we are facing another recession just starting again under Obama?”

A prophesy again? Can’t you wait at least until it starts?
“That construction is at a standstill and the price of homes is at lowest level?”

I am sure you can tell us exactly why it is Obama’s fault and what he should have done differently.

“That the president shows little pride in his own country?”

That, dear Dusty, I will call an outright, slanderous lie.

Dear MarkV

You never mention a lot of things you don’t want to think about. The debt seems to be one of them. The fact that our economy “ship” is in perilous waters and the “captain” can’t even see an iceberg in front of him is another one..

Now you can ignore all that and call it success. That is your privilege. And I mentioned the Bush items that Obama said he was going to change but then he did not. You did not seem to get that either.

Now if you have not noticed that our president goes abroad and makes apologies for our country when they are not needed, I certainly have. He makes our country seem less than important every time he goes abroad. Then he whispers to Russian diplomats like he could make good deals after he is elected again. What do you call that? Out right diplomacy with sneaky promises that have to be whispered? Intentionally or not,the president makes our country look second class. I hope he does not travel abroad any more. He should be the proudest person of this country and he isn’t.

You can call that a lie (which is rude and uncalled for) and go on acting blindly. It gives you no credit for integrity whatsoever.

He whispered to the Russian as everyone was listening about the ability he might have to make deals with the Russians after he was re-elected. The Russian president said he understood. It was sneaky and meant to be undercover. Of course, you don’t mind that.

Now, if you did not see that on TV, I cannot bring you up to date when you are obviously unaware of current happenings in Washington or don’t believe what’s in front of you.

As to the president’s promises he made before election, he has broken many of them. He was only saying what he thought people wanted to hear. He changed on Guantanamo and the troops overseas. If you don’t know that, I guess you will say I am not being honest.

When you decide to be aware of what is going on and not rush blindly to promote any action of the president, I will try to communicate with you. Otherwise, I see no point in trying. Trying to Shed Student Debt
[Democrat] Lawmakers Rethink Bankruptcy-Law Ban on Walking Away From Education Loans

The growth of student debt is stirring debate about whether the government should step in to ease the burden by rewriting the bankruptcy laws—again.

In 2005, Congress prohibited student debt from being discharged through bankruptcy, except in rare cases, because of concerns that many young graduates—who often have no major assets such as a house or a car—would be tempted to walk away from loan obligations.

Some lawmakers now want to temper that position, pointing to concerns that a significant number of Americans could be buried under education loans for decades. Their efforts, however, would apply only to private loans.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently offered a stark assessment of the threat to his state’s future that is posed by mounting pension and retiree health-care bills for government workers. Unless Illinois enacts reform quickly, he said, the costs of these programs will force taxes so high that, “You won’t recruit a business, you won’t recruit a family to live here.”

When did Rahm become a conservative?

When he called leftists “F-ing RETARDED”.

He was right about leftists and he’s right about government taxing its citizens out of an opportunity for future growth.

Had Obama listened to Rahm, he (Obama) wouldn’t be saddled with Obamacare.

Giddyup, Rahm!!!

Wasn’t it Nixon, who had a hit list?

The President Has a List—Barack Obama attempts to intimidate contributors to Mitt Romney’s campaign.

The Obama campaign has justified any action on the grounds that it has a right to “hold the eventual Republican nominee accountable,” but this is a dodge. Politics is rough, but a president has obligations that transcend those of a candidate. He swore an oath to protect and defend a Constitution that gives every American the right to partake in democracy, free of fear of government intimidation or disfavored treatment. If Mr. Obama isn’t going to act like a president, he bolsters the argument that he doesn’t deserve to be one.

WAIT NO LONGER:

1. Speaking to the NRA, Romney said, “The Obama administration has decided that it has the power to mandate what Catholic charities, schools, and hospitals must cover in their insurance plans…. Here we are, just getting started with Obamacare, and the federal government is already dictating to religious groups on matters of doctrine and conscience.”

In Massachusetts’ governor for one term, Romney took the same position Obama has adopted. He somehow forgot to mention this.

2. Romney also told the NRA audience, “We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners. President Obama has not, I will.”

The grammar in this sentence makes it hard to understand, but the implication seems to be that Obama has created new restrictions on gun laws. That’s a lie.

3. Romney also claims to be a “lifetime” member of the NRA.

In reality, Romney used to oppose the NRA, but became a “lifetime” member fairly recently by buying the honor from the group.

It would reduce the whole instrument to a single phrase, that of instituting a Congress with power to do whatever would be for the good of the United States; and as they sole judges of the good or evil, it would be also a power to do whatever evil they please.” – Thomas Jefferson

Obama, Democrats not serious about passing budget

And yet, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid appears to believe it is not necessary for the Senate to fulfill its legal responsibility by debating and passing a budget to account for $3.8 trillion in federal spending next fiscal year, $15.6 trillion of debt and, according to figures produced by the Senate Budget Committee Republican staff, more than $65 trillion in additional unfunded liabilities.

To provide some perspective to these incomprehensible numbers, the total net private asset base — that is, the net value of all household assets, small business assets, and large business assets — of the United States is $82 trillion, according to figures from the Federal Reserve Flow of Funds Account from March 8, 2012.

Even worse, President Barack Obama and his administration seem to view budgeting as just one more political maneuver. His efforts have been so completely unserious that the President’s 2012 budget was rejected by a vote of 97-0 in the Senate. And three weeks ago, when Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-South Carolina, sponsored a budget proposal based on Obama’s 2013 budget plan, it lost in the House by a vote of 414-0.

That’s right, not a single member of Congress cast a vote in favor of Obama’s last two budgets. That is a stunning repudiation of his leadership. What it really represents is a total abdication of leadership.

Has anyone stopped to consider that Democrats may not know what a budget is?

Even more so when they use an opposing candidate’s own words parsed very carefully to make a point not in keeping with the candidate’s views.

Fox News showed THE ENTIRE Mitt Romney 2007 quote being used by the lying President Obama in his recent ad about Bin Laden, and it showed not only did Mitt Romney have a complete grasp of the situation regarding international terrorism, it showed the depth to which this Disaster-in-Chief is willing to LIE to keep himself in power.

See: Healthcare done at the state level vs. un-Constitutional Obamacare.

“He can’t run purely on personality a la Reagan, because, well, see foreign policy experience.”

Yeah, ’cause the American Idol President is why we need to re-elect him. What has Joe Cool really done for us?

Oh, and it is an insult to ALL Americans when you use it to complain about insulting the Disaster-in-Chief. It is also inaccurate when using it to describe Romney’s appeal given the most recent polls, as many “real Americans” are apparently buying his message of economic hope and directional change.

Still waiting for someone – anyone – to provide proof that Mitt Romney had deliberately lied about anything.

I suspect it will be as long a wait as I have had regarding any lib on here posting a factual policy position Mitt Romney has, and describing their reasoned, logical opposition to it. Been waiting about 4 days for a single post on that particular challenge.

The latest poll by Purple Strategies, conducted in 12 states that will make or break this race electorally, shows a swift tightening in those key battlegrounds, with Romney making remarkable gains on Obama in a very short time.

getaclue, stop being lazy. Everything I have read regarding “Mitt Romney’s lies” have been columnists taking exception with some campaign hyperbole, or disagreeing with his policies or pointing out what they consider his flip-flops.

Not one post where they can claim that Mitt Romney made a statement that was untrue when he KNEW it to be untrue.

Do the work. Make the case.

And under this President, those pioneers would have faced an uphill battle to innovate, invent, and create. Under Dodd-Frank, they would have struggled to get a loan from their community bank. A regulator would have shut down the Wright Brothers for their “dust pollution.” And the government would have banned Thomas Edison’s light bulb. Oh, that’s right. They just did.”

http://www.politicususa.com/mitt-romney-wins-illinois-and-lies-his-ass-off-about-president-obama/

No, they didn’t. The truth is that it was George W. Bush who signed the Energy Independence and National Security Act into law in 2007. (Notice how George W. Bush has been erased from the collective Republican Party memory). This is the law that mandated higher energy standards for light bulbs. There is no ban on light bulbs, but if there was it was George W. Bush who signed it.”

Obozo agreed after Democrats got whupped in November 2010 and extended our President Bush’s tax cuts. With luck, that will be enough to keep the U.S. out of a double dip recession.

Well, that and electing Mitt Romney, an American who wants his country to succeed. A refreshing change from the last four years.

This is too easy.

Saywhat, your first link proves what I have said all along. If yo don’t agree with the policy, write that it is a lie. The remark that 92 % of jobs lost since Obama became President is true. It is his fault? Yes and no. His policies have done nothing to reverse that trend, and an argument can be made that his stimulus bill didn’t adequately address the issue. You may interpret that facts any way you wish, but the statement is true.

Your second post regarding this is once again one of semantics, but not a lie. Romney never said Obama has proposed new gun legislation but that he would. Between the two of them who is the likelier to propose gun restrictions? Obama. That is all he said. Too bad.

Your third one is already disproved in the very statement he made. Romney said “the government would have banned Thomas Edison’s light bulb”. And “the government” actually did. Now, here’s the million dollar question: Did Obama vote for the bill that banned them (or did he just vote “present” again)? Because if he did (and I just looked it up – he did :D ), then if Romney made the specific claim that Obama banned them, he’d be correct even more so than he is.

Nice try, son, but another epic fail on your part.

Romney = Obama

As someone who voted for Rick Santorum and donated $2K to his campaign, I just cannot and will not be supporting Mitt Romney this fall. We Republican’s need to have an open and honest conversation about this election and the perils of blindly following the Republican Party establishment and who they have been shoving in our collective faces and down our collective throats. Voting for Mitt Romney will just get us exactly what we’ve had for the past 30 years: more of the same reckless fiscal policies and fiscal mess. Until and unless we get behind a TRUE conservative and not someone who just pays us lipservice to what Conservatives truly stand for and believe in, then we as Republicans are doing ourselves and our country more harm than good.

As much as I think this country needs a stark change in Presidential leadership and direction, Mitt Romney is not the answer for leading our party or our country. How can we as Republicans ignore Mitt Romney’s record and all the things that he has said repeatedly while previously running for US Senate and Governor of Massachussettes? Was he lying then or is he lying to us now about what he truly stands for as a man? Deep in my gut, I don’t believe what he says, nor do I trust anything that he says he will do if he’s elected our President?

We as Republicans have to expect and DEMAND better from our party leaders, to do otherwise, by voting for Mitt Romney just sends the wrong message to our leaders. Aren’t we all tired of settling for less than what we deserve and pay taxes for?! WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS!
