Growing tired of the omnitopical presidency

Our bitter, aggravated politics has many fathers, from gerrymandering to genuine, deep and abiding differences of opinion about how to move the country forward. But here’s another problem with our politics I’ve noticed lately: We can’t escape it.

I don’t mean the 24-7 frequency of our news media — in the age of Twitter, it’s really 60-60-24-7 — although that bears part of the blame. Rather, I’m talking about the increasing tendency of our politicians, especially our presidents and those who would be president, to pop up everywhere else, too: on Oprah and The View, on Leno and Letterman, during SportsCenter and the Super Bowl and the Final Four.

A friend’s mother calls this “inmaface.” As in, you can do things with which I disagree, just don’t do them “inmaface.” When it’s harder and harder to enjoy the apolitical without the intrusion of the politicos, they’re inmaface.

I think political handlers think this is a way to soften their man’s (or woman’s) image, to make him seem more human, to lessen the polarization toward him. And maybe there’s something to it: Barack Obama, who has taken the omnitopical, borderline-celebrity presidency to a new level, remains more well-liked than his approval ratings would suggest.

Maybe that’s because he complains about the vagaries of the Bowl Championship Series and fills out March Madness brackets — hey, just like me! I wonder, though, if there won’t be diminishing returns to flooding the airwaves this way.

When I watched Obama talk about his daughters and basketball during halftime of the men’s college title game Monday, I was struck again that, for all my and other conservatives’ complaints about his policies, Obama seems like a genuinely good father and family man.

But when he picked his Final Four? Heck, I barely want to watch Dick Vitale pick the Final Four, much less a president with more important things to do and think about. I’d rather hear Obama talk about what he’d do to stop Washington’s red ink. Or, better yet, what he plans to tell Vladimir Putin once his “last election” is over and he has more “flexibility.”

Before the week was up, he was at it again, opining through his press secretary that the Augusta National Golf Club ought to begin admitting female members. And, lest you think my complaints are only about Obama: His Republican opponent from 2008, John McCain, and his presumptive opponent this fall, Mitt Romney, made sure to air the same belief.

Personally, I couldn’t care less what Augusta National does — and have a hard time believing that it says anything meaningful about equality for a woman or two to join a private club for the 1 percent of the 1 percent of the 1 percent. So why do Obama and McCain and Romney have to chime in?

In their defense, often it’s because they’re asked about these topics by my colleagues in the media. And maybe Romney, for instance, would have declined to answer about a private club’s choices if he felt confident it wouldn’t become the latest skirmish in the GOP’s alleged “war on women.” (Promisingly, he declined to prognosticate about March Madness.)

But then, the possibility a non-answer about women joining a country club would become political fodder speaks to our bitter polarization.

We’re electing a president, not a pundit-of-all-trades. The job is demanding and — just as important — it has limits. Maybe, just maybe, we’d have higher opinions of those who would hold that job if they kept their opinions within those limits.

The centrality of the family flowed from its role in the inheritance of property, which required women’s sexual monogamy and social subordination. Engels termed this “the world historical defeat of the female sex.”

We have entered the age of the American Idol President; one where the officeholder believes he has to be seen as “popular” due to his or her activities instead of his policies, and where the people the officeholder is trying to reach have the attention span of a gnat and room temperature IQ’s.

Historians will look back at this time frame in American history and conclude unanimously – this began the end of the United States of America.

Hillbilly is correct, it is called respect for the office. It is like class, some people have it, others not so much. Reagan would not enter the oval office without his jacket on, GWB would not answer bomb throwers, saying it was beneath the office of the president. Others like Clinton and Oblamer do not seem to have the same reverence for the office.

Tiberius, we have to agree to disagree here. While I didn’t think much of 43 as a President, I was amazed at how respectful he was, often at his own peril. When Hairy the Reid or Nanci Pelosi screamed at him daily, and Al Gore, said he betrayed his country, and Hillary laid on the war for oil criticisms and most of the Dems talked about Bush/Cheney’s war crimes, he respectfully did not respond. He said he had too much respect for the office to respond. Clinton or Obama, like the man-childs they are, use the tit for tat method to respond every time.

Bush’s lack of response/engagement resulted in many of these bogus charges sticking in the minds of the uninformed.

If Obama is running his household budget the same way he’s running the country’s budget, when he’s ousted, he & his family will be able to afford to live in an outhouse, specifically a one holer, on land that is rent-free. Maybe the EPA, his favorite agency, would be willing to donate land adjacent to their parking lot, with extension cords run as needed & energy paid for by “skyrocketing” costs, as he envisioned.

Obama fooled most of the voters when elected. He is now attempting to be re-elected by being all things to all people. Truely a logical impossiblity. Thinking rational people watch what a person does in comparison with what they say. When Obama is viewed this way he rarely does what he claims he will do and only nonthinking irrational people would claim otherwise. When one reads most newspapers, views network TV news programs, or hears liberal radio indications are that his actions are congruent with his words and the really sad thing is that these rose colored viewing reporters are actually legally permitted to be deemed sane enough to be registered voters. This is the dumbest article I’ve read from you in a while. You must be running out of things to complain about. If he gets asked a question, what is he supposed to do? Not answer? You would then complain that he is dodging questions.

You don’t like him. we get it. You write three articles a week that bash him in some way, but at least most of those have to do with his policies. This is just a personal attack.

You don’t like him because he’s too outgoing and likes basketball? You don’t like him because he has an opinion on Augusta national? He in no way tried to enact policies. It lowers your opinion of the office because he gives his opinion? If he weren’t outgoing, you’d complain he was too serious or boring.

You are close to recognizing the obvious: that President Obama is an intelligent, personable man who has patiently endured the obstruction of his political foes to guide us, within the limited scope of actions available to him, toward a slow steady recovery from the Great Recession.

How about going one step farther? Condemn the “tea party” folks for what they are: hate-filled Americans who are galled by the notion of black people living in the White House. Condemn the Republican politicians who cater to the lowest elements of our society, to divide our nation into red and blue states by exploiting the naivety and ignorance of the underprivileged and uneducated.

Then, take the ultimate step: abandon the outdated prejudices and political dogma you inherited in the last century from your parents and community, and put the interests of your children and your nation above your hatred of people you know only by the labels you have given them!

The deep and abiding differences amongst us are more than “opinions” Mr. Wingfield. These differences go to the very heart of what is at stake in this present political contest. What kind of government shall we have: A Constitutional Republic or a Socialist Democracy? What manner of economic system shall we employ: Capitalism or Marxism? What shall be the role of government be in our lives: One of Federalism with limits that protects individual liberties or one of Fascism without limits that denies individual freedoms?

Unfortunately, I’m afraid this “inmaface” helps create an intentional political illusion, a blurring, meant to distract from the above mentioned, very sharp, very distinct contrast. Misters, Romney and “obumer”(sic) are no where near alike as Rick Santorum would like to make GOP voters believe.

Romney is a hard core Capitalistic, obumer(sic) is a hard core Marxist. Romney would have us return to a Republic, obumer(sic) would have us be nothing less than a Socialist Democracy.

No matter how inundated or saturated we become of these two candidates over the coming months ahead the differences in who they are and what they want America to become is truly diametric, Mr Wingfield.

Kyle, look at the very end of your column. See your considerate invitation to find you on Facebook and Twitter? As much as I appreciate the offer, I get enough of you in the funny papers. So politicians intruding outside the world of politics is what you’re mildly outraged about today. How are we poor saps to know that Sarah Palin and Donald Trump are regular folks, just like us, if they didn’t sit down and enjoy a couple slices of Pizza together? A quick note to Trump’s handlers, Real folks don’t have handlers, don’t eat pizza in front of television cameras, and the don’t eat pizza with knives and forks. Seriously how are we to know that Mitt’s the one to save us from the evil socialist, Kenyan usurper if he can’t prove that he’s just a regular multi millionaire just like the rest of us. Kyle you really need to lighten up here. You clearly have no concept of how difficult it is to get stupid people to vote for you. If you did you’d be more considerate. On a lighter note, the gang of five, down at the Supreme court, decided that it’s cool to strip search us for minor offenses. makes sense to me, after all a lot of seemingly normal looking folks admit they’re Kenyan usurpers when they’re water boarded long enough. As much as I hate to see it come to this, it’s clear we can’t enjoy the the blessings of a small unobtrusive government without allowing our police their fundamental rights to strip and torture us.

Why does he make such a grossly inaccurate statement when attacking the Supreme Court (again): “Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected congress.”

I mean, how does passing the House by a 220-215 margin of just 5 stinking votes constitute a “strong majority”? It’s bad enough when he lies, but it’s downright stupid to lie so transparently yet he does so to continue the POLITICAL nature of his presidency, rather than focusing on the policy.

He’s wasted so much political capital on two major initiatives (stimulus and Obamacare) and two minor ones (Lilly Ledbetter and DADT), and except for Ledbetter, they all have mixed or marginal results at best – all because he wants to be liked so badly.

I’d have far more respect for him if he would just shut up and try to represent the country, rather than just the people he wants to love and adore him.

I watch CNN Wolf Blitzer and that annoying nasal high pitch voice as he glues his eyes on the teleprompter and lectures the audience on what is important as if he is the supreme judge of what our attention is suppose to be focused on. Notes are draped out of his hands so if the life supporting teleprompter should fail him he can immediately pick up the boring lecture without losing a decibel in his monotone delivery. He then switches over to Anderson Cooper who stumbles over his speech as he tries to intimidate an interviewee, not one sentence comes out smooth, they are moving that teleprompter too fast or someone is screaming in his ear distracting him from unloading on a poor fool that has volunteer for this duty of being interviewed or is trying to get air time and desires the mockery of a teenage voice changing Cooper trying to look like an adult. “You know you pulled that girls hair in church, now why did you do it? We have pictures of you doing it or we did I can’t seem to get them on the screen but trust us you pulled that girl’s hair. Now we have a staff of world wide expects on hair pulling and they all agree you are a sick man.” At that point there are 12 of the most fake looking smiles across my television and they never stop smiling as they all are in agreement the hair puller is a sick man. Try a fake smile for 15 minutes as you get talking points out of that cramped mouth that never hear nor care what the question is the answer was thought out an hour ago, I even wonder if they don’t tape it earlier and these people are now getting a face message after all that smiling, leaving Cooper to fight his teleprompter and ear piece not noticing the real human is not on the screen, he is talking to a tape.

The press has made trivia news, and have been so hard on candidates that the results are Mitt Romneys who are as dull as dish water knowing their slips are bigger news than the point they are trying to make. In fact you don’t have to make points just be smooth while being interview by a stuttering over caffeined interviewer, who is working so hard to catch you off you game that the cure for cancer becomes secondary to the fact you scratched yourself inappropriately and the world wants to know why.

Now comes Obama. He is very good in all this got ya game. He is not afraid to stroll around common people even let them get him every once in awhile, it is part of being human. It also off sets the characterizations of a bias press, they see he doesn’t speak with an accent, he is not crazy and he is entertaining, quick witted. In these polls they look at what O is suppose to be about against a public relations machine that is trying to clean up a clumsy Mitt. Comparing the two next to each other the next few months will blow up a lot of money spent on PR by Romney, he is too up tight to get the support of the American people, and the media will make it even worse. Every time O appears on national television and looks the equal of an entertainer paid to do this kind of work he will pick up votes. If old Wolf couldn’t control the bush league GOP debates wait till he gets a load of Obama who actually knows what he is talking about.

It is gratifying that Kyle, for a change, could not find anything more to attack the President for than that the President, like most people, had and expressed his opinions on a variety of subjects. Kyle admits that people like Obama often express their opinions because the journalists ask them, and that at least in case of Augusta National the opinion of the President (incidentally the same as Mitt Romney’s) was only drawn from his press secretary by a member of the press. Still, none of that dissuaded Kyle from writing a whole article about that fascinating piece of political matter.

But Kyle does not have to worry; he can always rely on the cohort of his sycophants to fill the blog with insults to President Obama, calling him moron (what does it say about the writer, who is certainly a less accomplished person that the President of the US?), raving about a vile community organizer “set about to change or destroy the Constitution,” (I must have missed Obama’s effort to change the Constitution; the author of that comment must have been foaming at the mouth), and even suggesting that Obama is a good father just to get votes – a truly pathetic fantasy, again telling more about the writer than about the President.

I have read several Ayn Rand books, in none of which she discussed religion. So, why do the liberals keep bringing up her lack of faith.

She lived through the Russian revolution and reported its affect on the people and she accurately predicted the types of problems we would encounter if we allowed the government to take over the economy and restrict our freedom. Rather than argue against the individual responsibility, liberty, and economic freedom she espoused, the liberals try to shock us with “she was an atheist.” What does that have to do with our respect for her ideas.

She has been far more accurate with her predictions, than the government propagandist, who assure us that everything will be wonderful, if we just get on board with their next great scheme to achieve fairness, which effectively limits our freedom and liberty.

SheeshLouise, I find it is almost always the liberals on this blog who try to bring up what the Bible (falsely) says about the role of government in an effort to denigrate Christians (as is their goal in life apparently). However, Christians hardly (if ever) bring up the immorality of government EXCEPT in it’s role in allowing abortions to occur.

In my mind both sides are guilty of attempting to push a religious spin on what are personal and private matters with individuals whom they will never meet. Both sides should just stick to the topic at hand, and keep religion out of political discourse.

That is where those who SAY they are “Christians” are exposed as frauds. I don’t major in the minors – the abortion debate being one such minor. I see it for what it is.

Just because principles are borrowed as being a good idea doesn’t mean we are a theocracy, as we have the 1st amendment to keep that from happening. ‘Cause if that’s the basis of your “logic” you don’t know logic.

And as to what Christ taught, while I am the furthest thing from a theologian, I do not recall anything in the Bible about bending over and taking whatever government makes you do in the name of helping your fellow man, rather that you should be willing to do so on your own if you are able.

Nowhere, SheeshLouise, however, the words “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” do appear in the Declaration of Independence.

Yet your point is moot, anyway. Again, you rely on the wordsmithing of “We are a Christian nation” to try to justify a false impression that everybody should be Christians in order to enjoy the fruits this nation can offer. NO ONE has made such a claim, despite the oft-used term, “We are a Christian nation”.

When using the term “this nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles”, that is without a doubt true. Our laws state that murder is wrong. That it is wrong to steal from another. That the choice to live free is held in high esteem. These are, in fact, Judeo-Christian principles that this country was founded upon.

Yet through all this, the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution specifically keeps government from instituting a national religion or interfering in the free exercise thereof, making sure that we will never be a Christian nation, but rather a nation containing Christians who just happen to be in the majority today, making the “we are a Christian nation” statement easier to say, but factually incorrect.

Oh but of course, conservative and Christian are not of necessity synonymous. One of the panelists on Fox News Sunday remarked that on the same day that the current Disaster-in-Chief was scolding the SCOTUS if they tried to overturn the will of a democratically-elected Congress (the one who passed it with a “significant” majority of 5 stinkin’ votes, btw) with his health care disaster, his own Justice Dept. was in a Federal court in Massachusetts trying to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (passed by a significantly LARGER majority than just 5 stinkin’ votes).

While I disagree with the DOMA in principle as something the Federal government has no right to regulate, encourage or support, if you cannot see the irony of scolding one court while encouraging another to do the very thing for which you scolded the first one – well, maybe you shouldn’t be on a political blog.

Me, I believe the majority of problems we have here in the USA now,are the result of the States not exercising their rights. It is probably far too late to address the power the Federal government has ursurped from the States. If we want to address the problems of a too large Federal government we need to elect Governors who will put their foot down and tell the Federal government “NO”. We need to elect Senators to do THEIR job, stick up for what is best for their STATES, not the folks who live in them (that’s the House of Reps. job). Actually I believe it is already too late, just get used to the Federal government telling you what to do, from cradle to grave.

Before the 17th amendment the States’ had representation of their rights in Congress.
However, the idea of it’s too late to reverse the centralized power of “Social Democracy” simply defies our human right to self-determination.

Whereas, the Supreme Court has the “last word” on what law is Constitutional in this country, it is we the citizens of this country who have always retained power and right of the “final and last word” on what we shall have for a Government and what we shall have in and as our Constitution to rule over the laws that we shall subject ourselves to live under.

This election could spell the end of an omnipotent federal government and the beginning of the return to federalism. That is, if the Supreme Court doesn’t usher that beginning in sooner than Nov. 6.

Perhaps women SHOULD be admitted to the Augusta National. Women could improve the entire tournament. The first thing we would do is get rid of that putrid green jacket & replace it with pastel Easter colors, beginning with pink, & change the color annually as a fashion statement. Who would be caught dead in last year’s colors?
The dress code is pathetic. We need to at least keep up with Kentucky’s derby. Women should wear frilly dresses, bonnets & high heels. Women could have a parasol contest. Men should wear suits, ties & dress shoes. Caps would be banned. Caddies could get by with nice slacks & shirts with collars.
Golfers’ posture is lacking, possibly causing back pain from bending over. Longer clubs would be an improvement.
Bad words & throwing clubs would result in fines.
Pets would be allowed as long as they are on leashes or in cages.
Those horrible sand traps are a nuisance & need to be filled in with dirt & grass.
Speaking of grass, it needs to be consistent. There’s way too many colors of green. It’s also too short. I was thinking that it would be festive if we had grass tall enough to have an Easter egg hunt for the kids, either before & during the tournament.
The name Masters must be changed to include either Misses, Madams, Ladies, Dames, etc. with ladies first. Madams & Misters sounds pretty good.
The ponds are a waste. They need to be stocked with edible fish & fishing should be encouraged.
Seating is atrocious. White wicker with pastel cushions would be much more appropriate. Tables with tablecloths should be considered with, of course, umbrellas. Waterford crystal, fine china & sterling silver flatware are always enjoyed.
Golfers became tired & (OMG) sweaty. Golf carts & scooters should be provided.
Food is way too far from the greens. Georgia is known for its BBQ & smokers should be set up all along the greens.
Hole. Sounds like something the gophers made. Dip sounds a lot better. Alternating among round, square & oblong dips would be fun.
Finally, the balls are too big. They would go a lot faster & further if they were a tad smaller.

Yes, it’s time for women to be invited to join the Augusta National.

Many don’t realize, but Internet stalkers start off just like pedophiles. First it’s a look at a pic, then it escalates. Same with stalkers. First it’s saving your comments, then it’s working at getting more information about you. The most deranged ones like Republicans Believe eventually start issuing you death threats after they’ve driven by your house to tell you something about your lawn or your car to show they know where you live.

In the meantime, Gingrich never gives up and he does have some good ideas. Here’s what he would like Republicans to keep in mind for “planks” for a new president.

1-Strong commitment to the 10th Amendment i.e. more power to the states

2-A balanced budget provision that would include a fund for debt repayment financed by royalties
from oil & gas

3-A plan for energy independence

4-A science research project to map the brain (to aid in Alzheimers’ and Parkinson’s study projects),something important to our aging citizens.

This information came from AJC’s Sunday edition in a reprint from Washington Post by Karen Tumulty. Gingrich may never be president but he will always have good ideas. It may help us to consider them.
