In February — three years after Barack Obama became president, and 32 months after the Great Recession officially ended — the United States recorded its largest monthly deficit ever: $232 billion. So, last month we borrowed the equivalent of Portugal.
The relatively good news is that February usually features low revenues and high spending. The country is not actually on pace for a $2.8 trillion shortfall this year. Whew!
The decidedly bad news: Washington still is well on its way toward a fourth straight year of spending $1 trillion more than it takes in.
That word, “trillion,” has lost some of its shock value during the past three years. But if you have children, grandchildren or just expectations of living more than another 10 years or so, you must know runaway red ink is the most important issue we face today. And, with apologies to each Republican telling the country that putting him in the White House is the key to America’s future, any steps toward solving this problem must begin in Congress.
Which brings us to the best news so far. In between the Romney campaign’s giving an unexpected boost to Etch-a-Sketch and the Broncos’ trading Tim Tebow to the New York Jets this past week, the most consequential member of Congress tweaked his plan for backing away from the fiscal abyss.
Paul Ryan, the House budget chief from Wisconsin, laid out his revised Path to Prosperity. The plan may or may not be politically practical, but it is vitally important in illustrating the kind of choices necessary to balance the federal budget.
He does this by recognizing two realities Obama still denies, if we are to judge by the president’s plans.
First: Tax revenues during the past 60 years, regardless of tax rates or loopholes, have averaged 18 percent of gross domestic product. So, if we are serious about balancing the budget, we cannot keep spending above 22 percent of GDP, as Obama proposes to do indefinitely. We have to get it to 18 percent or less.
Ryan’s plan does this, in part by holding down spending on Medicare and Medicaid. The program for retirees would be reined in by helping seniors pay for competing, private insurance plans rather than having the government insure them itself. Medicaid would be effectively handed over to the states, which would get less money from Washington but also much more freedom to shape their health plans for the poor.
But he also does it by cutting spending for defense, for education — for everything besides health care and Social Security — almost in half within 10 years. Would that be a shock to the federal system? Certainly. But, just as certainly, it represents the scale of change required to bring Washington’s spending under control.
The second fact is that we will escape our budget hole only by growing the economy. Among other things, that prevents absolute levels of spending from plummeting even as they shrink as a share of the economy, making cuts more politically palatable.
He proposes to do this with a complete overhaul of the tax code. Among other things, the current six income-tax brackets would collapse to just two: 10 percent and 25 percent. The falling rates would be offset by removing the litany of loopholes and carve-outs that favor the well-connected and distort decision-making. Ditto for corporate loopholes, as that rate fell to 25 percent, too.
There is no greater issue for the country than getting control of Uncle Sam’s finances, and no starker contrast with what Obama proposes to do if re-elected.

lefty_316@12:57, How many young women do you think there are in the US today who can not afford birth control pills for $9 per month? Only young women who do not want children?
Women volunteered for Komen & walked for miles with bleeding feet, unaware that funds were going to PP. How many women will die from breast cancer with fewer volunteers, fewer donations & funds being used for abortions rather than research?

Just@1:57, Many people don’t even know the difference between deficits & debt. Democrats keep harping about Clinton’s budget surpluses without realizing that every year he was in office, the national debt increased. Budgets are only blueprints, guidelines. Once the fiscal year is over, they are history.
The wars & the economic stimulus bill were paid for the same way, by borrowing, by adding the costs to the national debt.
There were no Bush stunts. Budgets are passed by both houses & there was a Democratic congress during the last 2 years of Bush. At least there were budgets back then. The Democratic Senate hasn’t even passed a budget in over THREE years! Obama’s budget last years was voted down in the Senate 0-97 & Reid is afraid to bring Obama’s ‘13 budget to a vote.

We have both a spending problem and a revenue problem. Both sides having to recognize that you can’t ‘cut cut cut’ to a solution or that taxing the highest 10% more is going to fix it. Even conservative economist say that taxes are going to have to increase and spending cuts are going to have to be made.

He’s added $5 TRILLION to the national debt. Gas prices have doubled. We are about to see the second country obtain nuclear weapons on his watch. As was Medicare Part B.
And Ryan’s plan, eliminating deductions such as mortgage interest and charitable contributions, is a start on reducing that debt. And for providing a wake-up call that there’s going to be unexpected pain.

Paul Ryan’s plan is to charge an 18% consumption tax on vaseline that the poor and middle class will be needing. There’ll be enough excess tax revenues from that to give his wealthiest supporters all their past taxes back and still double the DoD budget.

Kyle, you have to be kidding me. Ryan’s “budget” basically destroys education (student loans), and cuts spending on those folks who can least afford it. Plus, tax cuts for the folks who least need it! Please tell me when tax cuts on the rich helped the economy grow? This is the same tired economic plan that has failed to deliver again and again. Here’s my proposal: lets go back to the tax structure of the 1950’s and 60’s when the rich were taxed at 90% of their income above a certain level PLUS add a value added tax (VAT) which every other industrialized country has. We also need to cut defense spending (we currently spend more than the entire world COMBINED). You cannot cut down the deficit by a combination of spending cuts on the folks who can least afford them and on tax cuts on the folks who least need them!!! That’s just complete baloney!

Just@2:44, I can’t even remember budgets from years ago. I go by debt. If there were Bush stunts with his budgets, there were Clinton stunts with his budgets. Debt has been added to the debt every year for decades.
Medicare Part B is not added to the national debt. It’s considered an unfunded liability such as social security & Medicare.
No, Ryan’s plan is not a start on reducing the debt. It’s a start on reducing deficits. The debt will continue to increase for years to come.
In my humble opinion, the only way to pay off the natl. debt is through energy independence.

In the early ’60s, when Kennedy cut the capital gains rate.
In the 80’s when our President Reagan dropped the top rate, resulting in two decades of nearly uninterrupted growth.

Linda, you must live on the same planet Fox News lives on.
1) Let’s see, the unemployment rate when Obama became President was growing exponentially due to the financial meltdown and recession that started under Bush. When did the recession start? Early 2008! Who was President then?
2) He added $5Trillion to the deficit to stave off an economic DEPRESSION! Or would you have preferred that??? In fact, the vast majority of economists say he didn’t spend ENOUGH!
3) Gas prices have doubled but presidents do not control that. That’s a fact!
4) 2nd Country going nuclear under his watch??? What are you smoking??? Korea went nuclear in 2006. Who was president then?
5) As far as the rest of your rant is concerned, Obama maintains high popularity ratings among Jews in this country, among the youth, minorities and among women in particular. The last two are especially true since Republicans declared war on minorities (black and hispanic) and women’s rights.
Your rant is a classic example of the misinformed. The part about Obama letting a 2nd country go nuclear under his watch is classic. Where do you get your “facts” from???

Hey LiL Barry, since Reagan cut taxes, the deficit has also been growing exponentially. In fact, Reagan is called the father of deficit spending for a reason. Maurice@2:29, Revenues need to increase but not necessarily through taxes.
A survey of economists ranked Milton Friedman & John Maynard Keynes as the most popular economists of the twentieth century. The Economist described Friedman as “the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century…possibly of all of it.”
Obama has been following a pseudo philosophy of Keynesian economics on spending. (????)
Both economists were opposed to raising taxes. Keynes said,
…to create wealth will increase the national income and that a large proportion of any increase in the national income will accrue to an Exchequer, amongst whose largest outgoings is the payment of incomes to those who are unemployed and whose receipts are a proportion of the incomes of those who are occupied…
Nor should the argument seem strange that taxation may be so high as to defeat its object, and that, given sufficient time to gather the fruits, a reduction of taxation will run a better chance than an increase of balancing the budget. For to take the opposite view today is to resemble a manufacturer who, running at a loss, decides to raise his price, and when his declining sales increase the loss, wrapping himself in the rectitude of plain arithmetic, decides that prudence requires him to raise the price still more—and who, when at last his account is balanced with nought on both sides, is still found righteously declaring that it would have been the act of a gambler to reduce the price when you were already making a loss.”

*student loans: fed. govt. is broke
*tax cuts for the rich: Taxes aren’t based on wealth. Taxes are based on income. Rich people don’t necessarily make high incomes or any incomes. High income people aren’t necessarily rich.
*tax structure of 50’s & 60’s when the rich (high income earners) were taxed @ 90%: You did not read Kyle’s article, which states, “…tax revenues during the past 60 years, regardless of tax rates…have averaged 18% of GDP.” I cited proof with a graph from the White House Office of Management & Budget yesterday on this blog @ 3:43.
*cut defense spending: TRILLIONS for which is protecting our interests in the Middle East because we are too stupid to drill our own oil
@3:26,*Gentlemen don’t try to insult ladies. Only liberals are that crude.
* FOX News: I was betrayed by the corrupt media for over 50 years.
*The unemployment rate has been higher every single month for over 3 years under Obama than it was any single month for over 8 years under Bush.
*The economic stimulus bill of almost a TRILLION dollars was a Democratic celebration. There is absolutely nothing to show for $5 TRILLION of debt except for a credit downgrade.
*I’ve listed on this blog over a dozen ways that Obama has personally caused gas prices to double & quoted his adm.for his intentions to double them. He’s halfway there.
*N. Korea went nuclear in 2009.
*The polls in 1980 in Jan. was Carter 62%, Reagan 33%, Feb. was Carter 60%, Reagan 31% & in Mar. was Carter 58%, Reagan 33%.
*Liberal rhetoric. Obama trashed the constitution by dishonoring religious rights & insulted women by trying to bribe them for votes for $9 per month.
*I obtain my facts from Al Gore’s internet.

The so called Bush tax cuts are now the Obama tax cuts. The “Bush”tax cuts resulted in deficits in the neighborhood of 300 billion per year while the “Obama” tax cuts result in more than 1.2 trillion dollars per year. The Democrats want even more spending which is their reason for more tax revenue. How many times has the federal governement increased taxes? Dozens? Hundreds? I don’t know but I know this, if tax increases decreased natonal deby, we wouldn’t have a national debt. One things is clear, to reduce debt we must reduce spending, period. Giving the governemnt more money will not do it.

If they can’t afford to have a baby then don’t…..you’ve hit the nail on the head! Let’s help them out to the tune of $9 a month for the birth contol they can’t afford instead of adopting the policies of the religious right and committing to …..I don’t know, $200 perhaps, the monthly cost to taxpayers for 18 years to help them raise their child.
And let’s stop dishonoring our core Founding Fathers and the founding generaton by attempting to legislate religion. They were Enlightenment thinkers who valued science and reason and placed a low premium on religion. Did they think the New Testament was word-for-word true? Not Ben Franklin, he was a Deist. Not James Madison, he was agnostic. Nor Jefferson, who wrote that the New Testament, in his opinion, was a product of “inferior minds” and parts of it were so outlandish, so divorced from reality they ought to be considered “dung.” John Adams? No, he was a Unitarian. George Washington? According to his pastor William White Washington “never took communion, usually left the service early and never gave any indication that he was a believer.”
Let’s put an end to the dishonesty about our Founders and the idea that America was always intended to be a Christian nation.

Linda you asked how many women can’t afford $9 a month for birth contol. I don’t know the answer to that but apparently it is in the millions.
The Planned Parenthood annual budget breaks down as follows: 40% for breast cancer screening and other preventative measures, 40% for birth control for the indigent, 10% for miscellaneous and 10% for abortion services, The money for abortion services all comes from private donations. The states match $1 for every $9 the federal goverment contributes to PP.
Last week the state of Texas passed legislation that, due to a technicality, will assure PP in Texas no longer receives federal money. 130,000 women will be effected.

I do not for a moment believe the breakdown of the budget for PP, nor does it guarantee that taxpayer dollars are not used for abortions. PP was founded by a woman for eugenics, the destruction of the black race. The very name of the institution reveals that it does NOT specialize in anything other than abortion.
Taxpayer dollars should not fund abortions. Taxpayer dollars should not go to institutions who perform abortions. Taxpayer dollars should not go to institutions whose primary business is to wipe out the black race.

I guess if the tenets of Christianity aren’t your cup of tea then you gravitate directly to socialism becoming followers of Pol Pot, Mao and Stalin, some of the human “greats” of history.
Notice how all these left wing lunatics always believe in the power of the state, same as Hitler did?
If you can name one marxist that ever uttered the words “Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness,” outside of an election campaign, of course, I’ll become one.
That’s what I thought, looks like I get to stay with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, same as our Founders did.

Matthew 7:21 – 23
“Not EVERYONE who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only HE WHO does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. AWAY FROM ME, YOU EVILDOERS!’

Lil Barry you asked the sloth, stupidity and irresponsibility of the indigent.
I’m interested in practial solutions, not the corrupt idiology of the religious right. That why I’m happy to have some of my tax dollars go to Planned Parenthood every year to pay for birth control for the indigent.
Your attitude toward the less fortunate does not reflect or resemble that taught by Jesus in any way whatsoever. I think your claims of being a Christian are dubious at best.
