Poll Position: Which party’s most pooped about 2012 race?
Some of the Republicans who are weary of — and Democrats who are delighted by — the GOP’s long primary process have taken to pointing to turnout numbers as proof the party faithful are uninspired. In Mississippi’s hard-fought primary this week, for instance, turnout was lower than four years ago when John McCain already had all but wrapped up the nomination. We’ve seen similar results in other states throughout the primary season.
Then, along came Karl Rove with evidence the current president is suffering an enthusiasm problem of his own.
Which party has the least enthusiasm regarding the 2012 presidential race?

Loading ...In his weekly op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, Rove noted that Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee had a combined $91.7 million in cash on hand by the end of January. At the end of January 2004, by comparison, Rove pointed out that George W. Bush and the Republican National Committee had a combined $122 million in the bank. Obama is lagging behind not only Bush’s pace, but his own expectations: He’s bringing in money at about half the rate required to hit the $1 billion mark (a goal his campaign has since tried to play down, if not abandon).
All this, even though Obama “has already attended 103 fund-raisers, roughly one every three days since he kicked off his campaign last April (twice his predecessor’s pace).”
Part of the problem, according to Rove, is that Obama and the DNC are burning through cash at a much faster rate than Bush and the RNC did. But he also noted one difference that definitely speaks to enthusiasm:
The Obama campaign itself reported that fewer than 7 percent of 2008 donors renewed their support in the first quarter of his re-election campaign. That’s about one-quarter to one-third of a typical renewal rate: In the first quarter of the Bush re-election campaign, for example, about 20 percent of the donors renewed their support.

You mindless party hacks (left and right) must really have to try to be excited about the current candidates. Down on Jay’s blogs a regular posted an article similar to what you are talking about Kyle. The apathy of the Republicans as opposed to 4 years ago. I think that also applies to the Democrats.
I have read from several of the fanatical democrat posters on Jay’s blog that while they will (of course) vote for Obama, thye aren’t exactly thrilled with him.
As an independent, I’m not thrilled with him either, but he seems to be more palatable than the current crop of Republican nutcases seeking the job. I keep hoping for some ‘miracle” candidate to appear on the horizon like the old Cowboy riding in from the west to save the day, but I don;t see it happening. Given that the lunatic fringes rule BOTH major political parties in the Country no one but nutcases can win a primary anymore…….

Rove is comparing how much the current Presidential campaign has on hand to a Presidential campaign before SuperPACs even existed (ahem, like the one Rove has with millions to spend) to PROVE that the current President’s campaign has an enthusiasm gap? Seriously?
It’s going to be 80 degrees out today in mid-March. Based on Rove’s logic, that must mean that global warming is real.
Oh, wait, a single fake data point is not a trend.
The only enthusiasm gap that matters is the one at the voting booth. And that shows that Republicans are lacking enthusiasm about ANY of the nominees. It doesn’t show anything about the President… yet.

Leave it to Rove to equate money with popularity. That might be the reason he’s wiggling out. Romney has outspent Santorum 3 to 1 in states where he has been trashed. By Bush’s Brain’s logic, Romney would already be the de facto winner…and he isn’t. And Rove feels like his power is slipping. You gotta love Karl Rove, bless his black heart.

Apples and oranges, Kyle. The amounts of money each candidate had at similar points in their lives being apples, the oranges have it! Super PAC’s, as noted above, and ecomonic conditions are vastly different today than in 2004. I believe the Democrats are also vastly more confident that they will prevail, given the state of the opposition. The last orange, also noted above, is that the Democrats haven’t had to turn out to vote yet. And, finally, anything Karl Rove says needs to be examined with a left-leaning microscope to attempt to find the truth in the center.

Maybe they didn’t teach that where you went to school, but they mean two different things, especially in politics. And he’s doing it with the rank and file voter, not the SuperPAC donors, which is the logical and smart thing to do.
As for voting enthusiasm, while there is some in the GOP ranks, and while some can be attributed to the set of candidates still in the race, there remains but one goal for the GOP voter come November: ensure that the current Disaster-in-Chief gets the term “former” tacked onto his sorry title.
There is equal lack of enthusiasm on the left, with the exception of the union vote. Fortunately, there are far less of them than there used to be, so their myrmidon-ish knee-jerk ticket punching won’t mean as much as it used to. The Occupy Movement (insert your own joke here) is dead, if it ever had any real life except in the media anyway. And with no bumper sticker message like the dopey “Hope and Change” to attract the American Idol generation, we should be seeing far less videos of truly ignorant people being posted on the web answering questions incorrectly about the candidates they did (or didn’t) vote for this time.
Once again, it will all boil down the the moderate middle and independents (the real ones, not the ones like Fred who just claim to be in order to stake some position on a blog). If they want change, the current Disaster-in-Chief is out. If not, he stays.

Rove is spot-on with his analysis. The Lefties can deny if they wish, but when the Obama campaign and DNC tells those lower on the ladder to expect zero money to flow to their campaign, they have a problem with fundraising.
As to enthusiasm, come November Conservative in-fighting will be completely gone from the rear view and record numbers will vote. The desire to get Obama out of office exceeds all other concerns.

It’s not an enthusiasm problem. It’s a satisfaction problem. Bush put us in such a bad situation, it kept people in political angst. His first term polarized people because of Iraq. The second drove donations because he had driven America off a cliff.
People don’t have a lot to worry about, so they were lethargic. They aren’t polarized and mad. The only mad people are far right Republicans. Most folks are indifferent about Obamacare, and the unemployment doesn’t personally effect them. Iraq and a stock market crash equaled both sides really, really wanting to win, and the donors stepped up with cash to do so.

It’s not surprising that Obozo is lacking in support. His horrible performance aside, remember — a LOT of people voted for him only because he’s black. The shallowest did if for the novelty of it, and now that they’ve “been there, done that, still have the tee shirt” many of them probably won’t bother this time around.
Then there are those strange, psychologically warped white people called “liberals” who voted for a man based on the color of his skin… to “prove” they aren’t racist and don’t care about skin color! Polls and surveys are showing that this segment is fractured for various reasons, and many of them probably won’t bother a second time around… especially those who thought Obozo would have given them lot’s more freebies by now.
He’s still very dangerous, but because many of the stupid and braindead who voted in 2008 are turned off, there’s some hope that the GOP still has time to get their act together and put up someone who can save the country from this moron and his merry band of Bolsheviks before civil war breaks out.

The polls are indicating that both parties have seen a drop in “enthusiam” since the Republican primary voting has started. The Republican drop has been larger than the Democratic drop but both parties are down from December.

There are several indicators of Obama reelection weakness. Most recently, he and Biden are now in full-campaign mode yet they don’t even know who their opponents will be. There is the fundraising issue, plus a recent USA Today poll showed a majority of voters in swing states want Obamacare repealed. Energy policy is proving to be Barry’s undoing, which is well deserved. He is so in-bed with the rabbid environmentalists he deserves the thrashing. Even the unions are turning against him becuase of the pipeline.

Agreed, the middle will (again) decide the election and thankfully so as they are the ones with enough cognizant ability to understand that the pure form of either party’s ideology will not alleviate our most daunting problems, and that the plentiful demagogues on both sides are simply fanning the flames then blowing smoke up butts in efforts to energize their “bases”. In a nation that is generally split down the middle on most issues, compromise is an absolute necessity to any legislative accomplishments… yet compromise has been demonized amongst the public. Simply stated, any politician who refuses to even consider compromise on any issue (or at least the major issues) should be immediately removed from their position and sent packing without severance or benefits for refusal to perform a vital function of their job imo.
As far as change goes the situation is not quite as cut and dried as the poster seems to believe. Agreed, Obama could have accomplished more and better and an alternative to him would be a blessing to many. However one must consider the alternatives offered: Change from the republicans…? Change to what? Back to George W Bush’s fiscal policies… supply-side smokescreen whose benefits are weighted towards enriching the already-wealthy in ridiculous proportion in hopes that they may return some of that wealth to the nation’s economy via their urinary tracts? What else have any of these candidates offered? Anything new? This needs to be considered while thinking about change. Changing from Obama may not be a bad thing if the change is correct… changing BACK to W economics, however, is something this nation needs to avoid at all costs.

Money does not equate to votes. If that was the case Romney would have the GOP nomination sewed up. I contributed $50 to Obama in ‘08, but don’t plan to give as much this year. I reallly like the way Rove gets to Dems. They have no one who can hold a candle to his political savy. He can take a white board and laptop computer and run circles around them. You also did not mention that bringing down enthusiasm may be the plan of the Obama campaign. They may want this to be a base election instead of a change election because they may think they can win a base election, hence all the MSM talking and prodding the Republicans to talk about social issues instead of the economy and gas prices.

I disagree, and believe many share my opinion. While by no means the sole contributor to our piss-poor economy, Bush’s policies did indeed contribute greatly. Republicans’ staunch denial of that obvious fact detract greatly from their credibility, just like democrats who believe their partys’ policies had no part. Such vehement and consistent statements to the contrary belie self-imposed ignorance or true lack-of-interest regarding actual restoration of a vibrant economy. Again, this is something practiced on both sides of the aisle and is anything but beneficial to the nation. Sadly, republicans embrace of this tactic is far more visible in recent times and they are more inclined to cling to it because of George W Bushs’ failures (which are obvious to those who look somewhat objectively).
I’m not one who believes that Bush and Bush alone caused our economic woes… far from it, but todays’ GOP practice of TOTAL denial of ANY compliance makes todays’ GOP look ridiculous, especially in light of the fact that the GOP candidates are offering NOTHING new, only a return to GOP fiscal policy of 2000-2008. Both parties should be weary from all the lies and disinformation about the economy spouted by the leftist media (NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Yahoo, etc.) and the right (Fox News). The fact is that if ALL the profits from the big corporations and private enterprise were confiscated (taxes) by the fed government they would not even cover the INTEREST on the national debt – much less reduce the actual debt. Wake up America. We have a problem more important than government assistance for free contraception here! It’s called SPENDING. Like it or not these politicians are going to have to actually cut the size of the government, the military and the so called entitlement programs. Oblama’s plan to increase spending to save the economy is like throwing jet fuel on the fire. The clock on the national debt is TICKING! Bush and Oblama didn’t cause this problem – they just made it a lot worse. Vietnam was a Dem war, Iraq was a Repub war and Afghanistan is an Oblama war. All were and are a waste of lives, a waste of tax money and with what results? Three wars – no plan or desire to win on the part of the politicians. Just EXIT plans. Oblama has no plan to reduce the debt – just a plan to get himself and his comrades reelected. Keep those unemployment checks, medicaid checks and social security checks, government grants coming until after the election and then what? As Samuel L. Jackson said in EBONY magazine ” Oblama ain’t got no (expletive) plan to save this country, I’m not interested in his (expletive) plan. I didn’t vote for Oblama because of any (expletive) plan. I think any perceived lack of excitement on the part of the GOP base is there is no perfect candidate available to run against Oblamer, however, don’t for a second think that when Nov rolls around that moderate and conservative Americans are going to stay home, sit on their hands, and let this empty suit in office remain there. I think enthusiasm will spike in Oct and the eviction notice will be written and served.
Democrat voters may rally as they perceive the end near and force a great turnout effort to get their voters on the buses. We can all hope they fall short as many youth have left politics and returned home to mom’s basement. Blacks have to be discouraged at the rampant unemployment and lack of progress seen during the unfortunate period of nothingness that is the Oblamer regime. Many others dreading the implementation of Obamacare have waken to its harmfulness and extreme cost.
The greatest period of relief and enthusiasm for both parties will come the day after the election, when America steps out onto the road to renewal.

Four more years of Oblama? He has no plan except to get himself and his comrades reelected. We need some one with the courage to actually reduce the government. That is not Oblama. Tax and spend won’t cut it. It won’t cut the national debt. The clock to disaster is ticking. If all the profits from all the corporations in the U.S. were taxed 100% (confiscated) they would not even pay off the INTEREST on the national debt – much less actually reduce the debt. Why do you have to use lies when you are trying to make a point? Last year the interest on the national debt was about 454 billion, while the profits of the US corporations were about three times that amount.

If you don’t think that after the election your unemployment checks, your medicaid, your social security, your government grants aren’t going to get cut off you are dreaming. The dream world in Washington D.C. is about to get real. What happens when you reach your limit on your credit card? You get cut off. China and Japan own over half of the bonds on our national debt. They get interest on those bonds. That interest is equal to ALL of the profits the Big Corporations in the U. S. produce in an entire year. That’s our tax dollars going to China. Talk about exporting jobs. We are exporting our future to China! China owns the credit card debt and the U. S. is nearing it’s limit. Wake up America! Oblama = Oblivion. The Dems philosophy and plan is to tax and spend. That won’t pay the credit card bill my friend.

The national debt is only 15 trillion? Wow! That is a relief. I thought we had a REAL problem! Despite what the news media would want you to believe corporations pay a lot of taxes in this country. They also have expenses. I am not talking about the gross profits. I am talking about net profits. The INTEREST on the national debt is more than the net profits of the U.S. based corporations last year. I refer to an article in Kiplinger Magazine that came out in 2011. They are an independent, reliable news source. So – if we ONLY owe about 2.4 trillion to the Japanese and Chinese guess who we owe the rest of this”credit card” debt to? Are you telling me that you don’t see a problem here that tax and spend can’t get us out of? You don’t think we need to reduce spending? What’s your plan? The U.S. credit rating was downgraded last year by Standard & Poors for the 1st time in the history of this country. That is a serious warning sign of things ahead if the U.S. doesn’t curtail it’s spending. I am neither Dem or Repub. How about a plan to reduce this debt and the GUTS to implement it. Oblama has a plan to get reelected. He has no serious plan to reduce the national debt. Ross Perot was the only one that was honest enough to tell America about this disaster and America didn’t want to listen. The credit card is about to be cut off. The clock is ticking.

The amount of profits I mentioned was after tax profits. As for who we owe the rest of the debt to, I could tell you, but why don’t you figure it out for yourself?

I won’t fault Rove as a technician. That is why he was so valuable to W. He makes some good points. However, I’ll bet that in an off the record moment even Karl would admit that each campaign is different. Obama has not been in primary contests and the Republicans have not yet clearly opted for a particular candidate, even though Romney is the presumed favorite. Still, it is hard to get your donors fired up without a clear opponent. And the election still seems like a long way off. On top of that, the negative nature of the Repub primaries has probably had a general effect of tamping down both voter turnout and small donations. Voters just don’t want to feel dirty by participating. And if the general elec. is uber-negative, the same effect will occur, although balanced in large part by the partisan juices flowing and the immediacy of an election. In short, what is happening now has little bearing on how voters will act in Sept.-Nov.

It is so much fun keeping the Democrats in a frenzy. They don’t know which candidate on whom to throw more dirt, whose name to insult on the bumper sticker. They bash Bush again!. Roust over Reagan. Even mention Sarah Palin. And the poor president is off “speaking” every three days in the proper places while Hillary, Panetta, & Biden(!) run “business”.

National credit card debt is approaching it’s limit. I have been informed it is $15 trillion + though I heard three weeks ago it was $13.7 trillion. Let’s not quibble over a trillion here or there. Rove is spot-on with his analysis. The Lefties can deny if they wish, but when the Obama campaign and DNC tells those lower on the ladder to expect zero money to flow to their campaign, they have a problem with fundraising.
