It appears that, come November, Americans will elect as president either a wealthy member of a narrow elite or … another wealthy member of that narrow elite.
Of course, I mean the prospect of Barack “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and seen what they charge for arugula?” Obama facing Mitt “[My wife] drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually” Romney, in a contest to seem more in tune with Americans who gravitate toward iceberg lettuce and Fords.
This would be true even if Charles Murray hadn’t just published “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010.” And while Murray does not discuss presidential politics in his treatise on the growing gap between the New Upper Class and the New Lower Class, his book’s arrival is timely — and ought to inform the 2012 debate.
“Coming Apart” has been one of the most talked-about books in the commentariat in the past couple of months. But in case you have not come across any reviews of it yet: Murray focuses on “white America” to control for divisions rooted in America’s cruel history of race. “Don’t kid yourself,” he warns, “that we are looking at stresses that can be remedied by attacking the legacy of racism or by restricting immigration.”
That admonition alone would improve our political dialogue. But the trends Murray describes go much further.
He argues that, while our nation has always had disparities of wealth, for almost 200 years Americans shared common cultural experiences. In part, this was because the rich, the middle and the poor interacted. They were not isolated by religious practices or educational attainment; they consumed similar culture in terms of music, television and cinema; they had similar tastes in food and bought different models from the same auto makers.
Over the past 50 years, he says, this has changed. A critical mass formed of highly educated, well-to-do people with jobs of great cultural and/or political influence. There were enough of them, and they were sufficiently mobile and connected, for businesses to cater to their tastes. Think craft beer, espresso, sushi (and arugula).
By and large this New Upper Class is, Murray notes, politically liberal. Yet, in their private lives they behave more traditionally. For example, they marry before having children, and most of them stay married, even as out-of-wedlock births and divorce have risen among all white Americans. Perhaps surprisingly, they are more likely than members of the New Lower Class to attend religious worship services regularly.
Religion and marriage aren’t the only social institutions weakening among the New Lower Class. Its members are less likely to participate in sports clubs, the Elks Lodge, scout troops, elections.
Murray devotes little of “Coming Apart” to identifying the causes of this stratification. But he suggests one reason is the crowding out of social roles by government programs. Another is the New Upper Class does not preach what it practices. Lest they seem judgmental, our elites stay mum about behaviors they deem essential in their own lives. Murray calls them the “founding virtues”: marriage, industriousness, honesty, religiosity.
The reference to the founders is instructive. The people who practice these virtues — increasingly, the elites but not the lower class — are more likely to say they are happy. That is, they are succeeding in “the pursuit of happiness.”
A presidential election that explores this malign neglect of virtue would be worthwhile. Certainly moreso than a contest to see whose theme songs make them most “authentic.”

I’ve posted on this before but I think this is one place where urban/suburban life is different than rural life. In the cities and suburbs, there is often times little interaction between the classes. Out here in the country and in small towns, people at least know each other. When it comes time to sort out problems, that can be a first step. You tend not to demonize people as much, if you actually know them.

All to give themselves more power.

Good essay, great point – choose between a professor whose policies have failed, or a businessman whose policies are unknown. VP may make a difference for a change – as Mr. Romney’s gaffe rate is approximately equal to that of Chauncey, hope he can find someone less goofy than the current VP. (Although, in all fairness, reports say Biden tried to talk Chauncey out of going after the Catholic hospitals – that may tell us who is the goofier one.)

Once again, Kyle does his part to execute the right-wing tactic of making Obama seem like one of “them” on the flimsiest of evidence.
Eating arugula, according to the right, means that you’re out of tune with most Americans? Yes, that’s what Michelle Malkin, Glenn Beck, Pat Robertson, and now Kyle want us to believe.
For the record, arugula is grown by Iowa farmers (yes, Iowa is in America), and it’s sold in nearly every grocery store. Also, it’s just salad.
Look, if Romney prefers iceberg lettuce, well, that’s his loss. Something tells me, however, that he and his family have eaten more than their share of arugula too. He just won’t advertise that fact, now that his immature voting base chuckles at the sound of the word.

Fascinating sentence. So Murray believes that the “new money” is liberal.
I will need to ponder the ramifications of this statement. Is this why Obama is president? He did carry the over $250K family income crowd in Pennsylvania in 2008.
If the controllers of money are liberal, what will happen to the conservative movement if it is the movement of “old money” and “no money”.

Mitt needs to find a way during the first debate to point out Oblamers wealth and lifestyle of the rich and famous. Oblamer will use the class warfare attack every chance he gets. Romney needs to eliminate that right off by finding some clever way to point out that Barry is a wealthy social snob.
He might steal from Reagan as Reagan chastised Mondale by saying he wasn’t going to make age an issue in the race by pointing out Mondale’s youth and inexperience. That quip silenced much of that talk in the race.
Romney could say he is not going to make personal wealth an issue in the race if Barack can give him some tips on cool vacation sites and places to buy organic arugula.

i believe that people that get out and work and earn money should keep more of it. not have it redistributed. that simply requires washington d.c. to spend less money and to spend no more than it takes in. we need less federal government not more (as obama and the likes want). we need lower gas prices to sustain our economic growth (which both obama and his energy secretary are against). rush limbaugh is an entertainer and should be treated the same as maher, etc.. the difference is limbaugh actually promotes smaller government, people improving themselves, and people working for the money they earn (as opposed to having that money taken away from those who earned it and given to those who didn’t). the democratic party several decades ago figured out they could buy votes with other people’s money—the strategy has paid off–we now have more voters getting money of some sort from the government than the voters that do not. If and when illegal immigrants get amnesty as obama/napolitano/et al want then the taxpaying voter will lose all elections and we will become a 3rd world country —which is the direction obama and his policies now have us headed.

What can we do to improve the “virtue” of lower-class Americans? And, why not fix the “virtues” of the politically powerful and the ultra-rich, while we’re at it; they play the same marriage/affair/divorce, brat-spawning games as the lower classes, albeit in better clothes.
Surely, nobody’s “virtue” can be improved by legislation, prohibition, disapproval, and coercion. The neo-conservative politicians say starve and deprive the lower classes, and they’ll come around to “upper-class” virtues. Surely that’ll lead to revolt, not reform.
The lower classes are not a new phenomena; they have been around always, throughout history in all societies. Older Americans remember the days of “white trash” and “shiftless blacks”. Today, the lower classes of society are more visible, but less maligned. And, they have access to social media, especially television, to glorify their ignorance and destructive behavior.
Class division based on social behavior, rather than privilege, is due to low intelligence, primarily, and deprivation, secondarily. Think about it! Only half the American population could score above IQ100 on an intelligence test. Many Americans are just plain pig-drool dumb, unable to associate cause with effect, unconcerned about their future, and gullible for religious and political demagoguery.
The way to handle the lower class burden on our society is to do what we are already doing, but do it better: placate them. Give those unwilling to work, or unable to do anything useful, food stamps, a small monthly stipend to cover their basic expenses, and health care coverage as good as that they would receive in prison. Guarantee everyone a flat-screen TV to watch the network trash, ball games, drug commercials, and Sunday religious services. Give everyone a smart cell phone for improving their language skills by texting their equally ignorant acquaintances.
But, give the lower class children good schools, and an opportunity for those who have inherited above their gene pool to lift themselves from the mire.
Now that we’ve solved the problem of the “lower classes , let’s try to improve the lot of the “upper classes”. How about teaching proper dress and manners in schools? How about requiring restaurants to offer arugula salads, French wines, good cheeses, and refined main courses? How about reserving television and cable channels for non-commercial entertainment and non-political news from the BBC?

Let’s face it folks. Kyle put out a first-class commentary on trying to get to the root causes / symptoms of the divide that many of you on the left complain about on a daily basis, and what do you do?
Whine about arugula being associated with the President. Oh, the horror!
This sums up what my reaction to you folks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbXFyNv7c-8
I’m not saying this Murray guy is right or wrong, but his theory is at least worth intelligent discussion for crying out loud!
Ayn Rant’s most recent rant misses the point entirely. It devolves into yet another screed about how we should “fix” something that cannot and likely should not be fixed. You cannot change the natural order of things; that being that there will always be some people better off than others. There will always be some people smarter than others. There will always be some people luckier than others (even though we usually make our own luck).
We are guaranteed equal rights, not equal outcomes.
The issue is (if I understand his theory correctly for lack of a better terminology), the destruction of the whole “melting pot” concept of America. The age of the hyphenated American has taken hold. We’re not Americans anymore, we’re (insert your chosen designation) – Americans nowadays.
It makes us feel special. It makes us feel above average, even if we’re not. “I’m not merely American, I’m (whatever) – American.”
Big frikkin’ deal.
When we were only Americans, we had a common goal. Now that we’re hyphenated-Americans, we no longer focus on the shared, common goal, but on ourselves and those who share our smaller (and therefore lesser) designation. And make no mistake; it is government that has fostered and encouraged this practice of hyphenated-Americans for years. And yes, it is largely those folks of the liberal persuasion who have encouraged this class warfare they now rely on so much by insisting on designating us by subclass, ultimately weakening the foundation of this country that ultimately benefited us all.
Instead of the usual political attacks this blog usually turns into, why don’t you each try to understand and maybe learn from what this author postulates. My belief (nor his) can be considered the only right arguments in this issue, but except for Kyle’s initial attempt, they’re the only one’s addressing the argument at hand thus far.
Up your game, folks. Some of you are capable of doing so.

One thing never to forget, Obama is black. No matter what quote you draw from him you cannot misrepresent his hardship in a matter of a blue blood disconnect. Any disconnect is from the white race to him. They have misrepresented his birth, education, religion and political positions when their real problem with the man is he is black. The problem with this country is there are people being born on third base who think they have hit triples. Romney is defiantly one of those as was both Bushs. Clinton grow up poor as did Obama. Now I want to hear more about the rich being liberal. It seems to me unless they have blood test for such there is no hard evidence of this conclusion. Also the rich is not a race into itself. You can be rich today and poor tomorrow.
The white race is “coming apart” by its own hand no one else. They have gravitated to the lowest denominators of our society in my lifetime. Instead of being an Obama or a Clinton and lifting themselves above their class of birth, there has been a mass demotion of the white race self imposed. Religion has become far less important in this crowd, as has education, tradition, and formality. Churches now days are bluejeans and tshirts, cigarettes and tattoos. Radio personalities have become gurus, drama a way of life, watch Jerry Springer and tell me where you see any separation in conduct between the races. Media instead of raising the bar find it more lucrative to lower it. Media has become the classroom of the 20 and 21st century.
When people become educated they may become more moderate. They open their minds more and see the world differently. This is not a rich, poor, equation it is a educated, uneducated equation. It benefits the Republican Party to keep the country uneducated. There is evidence in the position of such states like Georgia or Mississippi or Alabama as to their educational ranking and how they vote. These are Newt states and he plays them like a fiddle. The country will gravitate towards a national personality, it always has. What we have today are fear merchants leading this country who will not speak out on our real problems. We have just gotten to be a bunch of sorry people who want to blame our sorriness on other people instead of taking ownership of it ourselves.

Now as the ground is falling beneath your shoes you try so hard to keep your troops in check by comforting them that the world is not getting better this is an allusion. Allusion was an economy living off easy credit, politicians cooking the books to make America believe we were living in high times. Notice we are having a recovery now without smoke and mirrors, no easy credit, no Erons or MCIs cooking the books, giving huge contributions of stolen money to the Republican Party, nope this one is for real. And independent money scares the hell out of the Republican Party. You got Romney buying an election, Newt staying in one because of super-pack money. If Kyle wanted to make us aware of Charles Murray’s “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010” and encourage us to read it, he could have done it in a much simpler way. But to submit this complex sociological study, which has been subject of both praise and strong criticism, for a blog discussion? The only justification might be that this trivialization of the subject would be in tune with what is happening on this blog every day. Having taken the time on this pretty day to read some of the inane comments, I have the following to say before returning to this beautiful day outdoors.
I don’t throw the stupid word around, probably as much as I should, but the comments that some make to justify their position, that there is no difference in Romney and Oblamer, is stupid. I think people say this to justify doing or not doing what they know they ought to do. If they are slackers they know that taking of the dole is wrong, but to justify it, they say, well there is no difference in the two parties, so why change anything.
Well, here is the difference between the two on just a few issues.
Oblamer wants to raise taxes, Romney wants to cut taxes.
Oblamer says oil is the fuel of the past and he is not worried about rising gas prices, Romney said it is absurd that we are developing our resources and using all our energy options.
Oblamer wants to grow government, Romney wants to free the private sector to grow non government jobs.
Oblamer wants to appoint liberal justices to the Supreme Court, Romney wants to put more conservatives on the Supreme Court.
Oblamer wants more government control over your life, like Obamacare, Romney wants to repeal Obamacare.
Oblamer wants the government to be in control of the economy, Romney wants economic freedom.
I could go on and on. Idiots that think they are one and the same, need to turn off American Idol and Dancing with the Stars and come out from your TeeVEE induced coma and do some investigating. I think if you look you will quickly find that this economic downturn is the second longest in USA history. Do you think that it is coincidence that Oblamer is in charge.
People who say, he inherited all these problems and he can’t fix them overnight, need to study Harry Truman. Think Barry got a short straw, check ole Harry’s plight at the time he first stepped into the oval office. Never heard Harry blame anyone. “The buck stops here”, he said.

Surely the difference in lifestyle between the high IQ elite and the lower IQ underclass is largely explicable purely by the different prospects in life ensuing from their different intellectual levels. It’s OK for a clever, well educated lawyer with a high salary to talk about the virtues of marriage as he/she won’t struggle to find a partner but many low ability men who can’t find a job and by nature aren’t full of scintillating conversation have no selling point for marriage. The fact that the IQ- rich have now pulled apart so those talented people who used to enrich communities and provide role models to others have now separated themselves and associate only with one another leaves many communities which used to be mixed full of only low prospect, low talent people with low chances of marriage. There used to be many couples, too, where one marriage partner was significantly brighter than the other but society’s polarisation has been increased by intelligent men and women being able to find and marry one another so that many couples are either both intelligent (the married ones)or both unintelligent.Generally, there’s far less of a middle ground in society. Perhaps the church should urge talented and well off people to move into less fortunate areas and enrich them with their lives rather than throwing money at them. The problem is that so many politicians have themselves come from elite and very sheltered backgrounds.

The concern should be about segments of society that still suffer the effects of slavery, racism and bigotry. Additional attention should focus on why poverty and hunger still exicst in this country.

Leftists require regimentation of society, a la “ObamaCare,” or “Dodd-Frank” or any other business law or regulation. That mandatory goose-stepping is objectionable to all who prize freedom. Other than those narrow areas that constitute a fraud on the market – “collusion” and “fraud in the inception” – there is no need for bureaucratic control of the decisions of free individuals.

Well, I just reread Kyle’s piece and I might disagree somewhat on some things. For instance, when a political scientist like Charles Murray starts writing about “the state of White America”, he loses me right there. There is no “White America”. He’s just throwing out a bone to get some snarling. We are a “melting pot” and color is neutral.
From Google I read a comment from the NY Times which says the book “depicts members of white elites as hypocrits living in a bubble”. Oh, bubble bubble toil & trouble, Rich people used to live in castles. They don’t live in a bubble now. Rich just means you made or received more money and whatever comes with it is theirs. Not ours but theirs. They can live in a tipi is they so desire. I don’t care.
That has been true forever in case this political scientists doesn’t know it but he does. He also knows to publish a race & rich book when political fires are at full heat.
The rich are not our problem The fact that our country is short on riches, better know as money, is the problem. And we don’t send people to Washington to manage the US money when they have never managed much of their own. We TRY to send the brightest and the experienced to Washington and that is usually someone who could manage their finances.
Kyle has to read such books to keep “current”. I don’t have to be bothered. I’ll just bungle along without a political scientist to tell me what shade of Americans is doing what.

The poor master of hate missed a very deep thought yours truly expressed previously in response to another comment made in regards to the politically liberal new upper class elite’s virtues of religiosity while ranting in the abyss. If only his malign of other’s intelligence could ever rise to equal his ego, perhaps then he wouldn’t feel their tin-ear had slighted his own eyes so dreadfully.
Churches in the traditional past were the community gathering places for white and black America, rich, middle and poor alike. Much of this “Coming Apart” as it is called can be traced to a departure from this tradition of community Church(the foundational bedrock) which maintained virtues: “marriage, industriousness, honesty and many others”.
Unfortunately, as Theologians would readily identify, this is the Church Age of Laodicea. Which is noted for being lukewarm, as it was cited for being neither hot or cold. Hence the earlier attributing of today’s churches to status of Country Clubs and Social Networks, no longer places where rich and poor worship one God, in one place, on the same level plain in a central commonality that reinforces transcending shared values and virtues.
Ron Paul made mention of a time in this country, while in one of the debates, when there was no Medicaid, Medicare including very little widespread company sponsored healthcare but nobody went without needed treatment.
Hard to believe?
Then again, how many today realize the close connection Catholics, Protestants and Baptists (the three major denominations in this country) have with schools, hospitals and clinics in this country?
Try telling people of this entitlement America now dependent on government, in many case for their daily bread that once upon a time, not much more than a half century ago, your local community church was the “Safety Net” in this country, which kept people from falling through the cracks so to speak. Yes, it was the churches who took care of the sick, the homeless, the widows and orphans. The community church was there when a new life entered this world and it was there when a life departed – A different kind of universal womb to tomb coverage than most would understand and even fewer appreciate.
People are readily quick to protest and rightly so to condemn any religious intrusions of churches into the role of our government. However, not so much as a mummer seems to have been heard while government invaded hallowed grounds beyond its’ Constitutional boundaries, into the role of Church.

M.H.Smirh @ 5:54 p.m. The double standard is not new. It should not shock you that Bill Maher can call any woman he chooses a slut, protstitute, or worse, and he will not be challenged or condemned by women in any way, as long as he is aiming his arrows at conservative women. This same type of double standard applies to blacks. Maher or any one of his ilk can call a conservative black man or woman anything he or she wants, including the N word, but usually Uncle Tom or something like that suffices. — and with no out cry and no retribution. Why? Because blacks and women OWE the Dem/Libs. They owe them for all the “great things” that liberalism has brought them over the decades — like four generations of welfare dependents, but let’s not go there right now. If you are a consersvative black or a conservative woman, you are obviously a TRAITOR to the “cause” and disillusioned, as well as delusional, to boot . . . and you are totally and completely FAIR GAME for any slander they want to throw your way. If Sarah Palin had been a Dem/Lib woman, she would be a holy and sainted martyr now for what she has gone through at the hands of the Dem/Libs and their lamestream media lackeys. Remember when Bill Clinton, the President of the United States, convinced a 20 year old girl to give him oral sex in the Oval office? Do you recall the indignant and huge out cry by the National Organization for Women (NOW)? Do you recall their outrage, their livid anger, their disgust, their frustration, their hatred and their stated inention to bring this guy down, and to bury him, to ruin him politically . . . forever? Do you recall that? No. Of course you don’t. Because it didn’t happen. NOW is a Dem/Lib organization. It was then and it is now, and it will be forever. When Clinton did that, they all collectively disappeared. They practically left the planet. Did you hear one word out of them? One little peep? No, not one. Clinton was THEIR guy. Now, what do you think their reaction would have been had Clinton been a Republican? The mind boggles at what they would have done to a sitting Republican President. Just look what they did to poor Clarence Thomas for far less, and based only upon the nutty testimony of an obvious woman scorned. She never could answer why she went back to Thomas for advice and counsel afer the alleged harrassemnt and “pubic hair on a coke can” incicent. Why? Because there was no harrassment. The Dem/Libs were desperate to keep a conservative black off of the Supreme Court and Anita Hill was their dupe. Double standard???? Do ya think? Do ya really think?? Like duh.

Where were you during the Reagan administration, Lil Buh Buh, in a cave, under a rock? Reagan’s government was bigger and more expensive than all the governments before him put together. He was not the man Noot and company would have you believe. He was popular on the right side of the aisle because he was likable and he had an R next to his name. It had absolutely nothing to do with his policies.

“By and large this New Upper Class is, Murray notes, politically liberal.”
I had taken the argument from Kyle’s observation that most of the elite rich are liberal, quoted from Charles Murray. First of all there is the loose use of the word liberal, then there is a reason behind what he is saying called education, the rich have access to real education. Just because you use an outhouse doesn’t make the toilet progressive to the general public. My question to Kyle is does poverty make you conservative or is it ignorance, which one came first?

Double standards also was the protection RL claimed in his defense. He claimed at first his comments were for humor. Rush is not a standup comedian though his work feeds a lot of other standup comedies with lots of good material, Bill Maher being one of them. Bill Maher, by the way is a true liberal, not the moderate like Obama, and really has helped the conservatives blur the reality of Obama’s message. RL is the professor in residence for the standards of the conservative movement. When he calls you a slut the whole ditto head nation now has license to use the word. I am just glad he didn’t use the n word, and set the country back another 100 years.

Some including those on the left consider Rush Limbaugh a clown. No real difference exist between Maher and Limbuagh, both are entertainers.
Where some may want to use “one against the other arguments”, as disingenuous people so often do: If it is wrong for one, it is wrong for all to use offensive unacceptable gender demeaning language. Only the morally bankrupt and intellectually deficient would defend this conduct regardless of its origin and worse NOT publicly denounce any duplicity of that fact.
Thankfully, as much as the leftwing nutjobs would like to make Rush Limbaugh the solitary voice of conservatism, he really isn’t: Though, I’m too, am glad he didn’t use the “N” word… regrettably Maher and those of his ilk have and do use the “N” word as well as other ethnocentric slurs that is too often accepted by those left, even embraced with frivolity and laughter rather than denounced in public outrage, as the duplicity of the current Marxist in the oval office reaffirms.

Michael H. Smith, there is no question regarding the historical fact of the role churches have played in this country.
The question is regarding THIS issue, which you have not tied anything to except, again, your own faith without anything but that faith to back it up.
You have failed to step up your game. Faith is your crutch for virtually every argument, but faith is a belief, not a theory, which requires at least some facts to back it up.

“Murray devotes little of “Coming Apart” to identifying the causes of this stratification.
But he suggests one reason is the crowding out of social roles by government programs
Another is the New Upper Class does not preach what it practices. Lest they seem judgmental, our elites stay mum about behaviors they deem essential in their own lives. Murray calls them the “founding virtues”: marriage, industriousness, honesty, religiosity.”
First improve YOUR pitiful reading comprehension will you? What part of the above doesn’t tie in to the question of this “Coming Apart”?
And YOU have been completely dismissive of the role the Church has played in this country, one point made in my comment directly addressed the role Churches gave to uniting communities.
Therein is no theory, it is a matter of public record.
But if you like to contend differently to the facts go ahead with YOUR excellent beliefs.
Want to begin with disassociating churches from the civil rights movement?
Oh maybe, you can tell me there are no hospitals in this town with ties to churches or ties schools? Oh but of course, it will be easy for your beliefs to supply reasons to suggest that rich and poor black and white had no shared virtues e.g. industriousness, honesty, religiosity, in seeing these fictional institutions brought to a visible fruition?

“It always surprises me to see how many people claim that the Commerce Clause can’t govern health care. The operation of every health care facility in this country — from a doctor’s office to a major hospital — is directly controlled by interstate insurance companies, an interstate body of health care professionals produced by educational institutions that serve a national clientele, interstate providers of medical supplies and equipment, and federal laws and standards that regulate all those people, schools, and companies.
The notion that any state is capable of providing and regulating its own self-contained healthcare system is pure fantasy.”
…and…
“Opposition to the Health Care Act claims that it is unconstitutional to force people to buy health care insurance. The question that begs to be asked is why should the rest of us be required to pay for those who are uninsured? If the goal is to be independent and free of big government involvement than why do we pay billions more for healthcare because the cost of covering the uninsured is priced into our care? So big government cannot dictate to us but big business can?”

Anyway, won’t matter one whit when we get a Rep President, who will sign the repeal. The votes are there, just need someone who will not veto the bill.
Its not nearly that easy.
1. No way the Republicans win this November. Romney wont excite the base and Santorum is unelectable in the general election.
2. Universal Healthcare is here to stay like it or not. Im glad because the countries who do have Universal Healthcare have a much better healthcare system than ours.

You are being VERY intellectually dishonest. People aren’t down on Kerry because he “fought for his country in Vietnam”, and you know it.

Conservatives Sowed Idea of Health Care Mandate, Only to Spurn It Later
By MICHAEL COOPER
Published: February 14, 2012
It can be difficult to remember now, given the ferocity with which many Republicans assail it as an attack on freedom, but the provision in President Obama’s health care law requiring all Americans to buy health insurance has its roots in conservative thinking.
The concept that people should be required to buy health coverage was fleshed out more than two decades ago by a number of conservative economists, embraced by scholars at conservative research groups, including the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, and championed, for a time, by Republicans in the Senate.
The individual mandate, as it is known, was seen then as a conservative alternative to some of the health care approaches favored by liberals — like creating a national health service or requiring employers to provide health coverage.
“In 1993, in fighting ‘Hillarycare,’ virtually every conservative saw the mandate as a less dangerous future than what Hillary was trying to do,” Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, said at a debate in December, casting his past support of a mandate as an antidote to the health care overhaul proposed by Hillary Rodham Clinton during her husband’s administration. “

The Republican wet dream: The ability to control others lives completely by stating that their view is the ONLY view.
———
Is that all it takes to control you?
Doesn’t seem nearly as effective as using the federal government to impose things on folks, like requiring them to purchase a product from big business.

I didn’t say that at all. I don’t expect you to get the context and the point. That’s ok.
Have to go now. Unless most of the cons on this blog I actually have a job and don’t just sit on it all day.
I will say this. Until the level of education goes up in the south they will continue to vote Republican. You can almost look at a map and the lower the education level of that state and the lower the number of college graduates the more likely its a red state.

Did Romney Support a Federal Mandate During the Obamacare Debate?
9:01 AM, Mar 3, 2012 •
As BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski reports, USA Today published a health care op-ed by Mitt Romney on July 30, 2009 — just days before the start of the August recess that quickly became the August uprising against Obamacare. In his op-ed, Romney seems to encourage President Obama to move in a slower and more bipartisan manner, to abandon his planned government-run “public option” (which, under constituent pressure, the Democrats eventually did scrap), to use Romney’s Massachusetts health care overhaul as something of a model, and (as a way to keep Obamacare’s costs down) to include a federal mandate.
Romney wrote:
“Health care is simply too important to the economy, to employment and to America’s families to be larded up and rushed through [Congress] on an artificial deadline. There’s a better way. And the lessons we learned in Massachusetts could help Washington find it.
“No other state has made as much progress in covering their uninsured as Massachusetts….Shortly after becoming governor, I worked in a bipartisan fashion with Democrats to insure all our citizens….For health care reform to succeed in Washington, the president must finally do what he promised during the campaign: Work with Republicans as well as Democrats.
“Massachusetts also proved that you don’t need government insurance. Our citizens purchase private…insurance. There is no ‘public option.’…

LBB…an interesting argument from the NYTimes…one reason that HCR will be constitutional:
“It is tempting to shout states’ rights when deeply flawed federal legislation is enacted, but the momentary satisfactions of that exercise carry long-term constitutional costs. Badly conceived bills die a thousand political deaths — in the appropriations process, in the states, through electoral retribution, in the executive appointments of a succeeding administration and ultimately in amendment and repeal. However, if courts read the Constitution in such a way that it enables them to make Congress ineffectual, and instead to promote 50 state regulatory regimes in an era of rapidly mounting global challenges, the risks should escape no one. Making our charter more parochial while other nations flex their economic muscle seems like poor timing. “
