Thoughts on (maybe) (possibly) (perhaps) the last GOP debate

I haven’t written recaps of each GOP presidential debate this cycle, but I do have a few thoughts about last night’s, which may have been the last one with these four candidates.

Rick Santorum had a tough night. He appeared aware that he would be attacked, but his answers didn’t always impress. While he deemed his support of the No Child Left Behind law as a mistake he made under pressure from his party because “politics is a team sport” — a sentiment seemingly at odds with his earlier one-word description for himself, “courage” — he gave a lengthy defense of congressional earmarks. There is a case to be made for earmarks: It holds that they allow Congress to preserve more power of the purse rather than yielding more decisions to the executive branch. Even Ron Paul makes this defense. But defending earmarks is a bad spot for anyone in the tea party era, and it’s especially bad for Santroum because it also serves as a reminder that he was in Congress at a time when Republicans were falling off the small-government wagon. That said, I don’t think it was so bad as to have a large effect on his chances in the Arizona or Michigan primaries next week.

Mitt Romney fared better, and it helped his appearance to the TV audience that so many people in the live audience were his supporters. But Santorum landed a good blow on him by observing that even Michael Dukakis had balanced the Massachusetts budget because the state’s constitution requires it. And his attack on Santorum for endorsing Arlen Specter over conservative stalwart Pat Toomey in a 2004 U.S. senate race (as did most of the rest of the GOP establishment at the time) had the unfortunate effect of ensuring Specter’s name was being invoked when Barack Obama’s name could have been. That’s a loss for Republicans.

What about Newt Gingrich? He was back on his game, coming off as knowledgeable, focused and ready to defend conservatism. And he did so without attacking the moderator or, for the most part, the media. But at this point, do debate performances continue to move the needle for Gingrich? Like his divorces and some of his missteps as Speaker, good performances in debates are baked into the cake for him. At this point, that cake is valued at third place by the GOP primary electorate. He wasn’t good enough Wednesday night to surpass expectations, so I have a hard time seeing how the debate spurs him very far upward.

Ron Paul was Ron Paul, maybe a little more appealingly so than at other times. But while his foreign policy stance might help push the party away from military adventurism, it’s not going to be adopted wholesale by Republicans anytime soon. And that pretty much counts him put as a potential nominee.

There is a case to be made for earmarks:

That’s true but the fact that they most often try to hide them, says a lot about earmarks, as well.

I was impressed with Mullah Santorum’s quest to return the United States to the 13th century, while it is always entertaining to hear what dishonest pandering will come out of Mitt’s mouth next. He proclaimed President Obama was against crippling sanctions against Iran, yet has implemented the strongest sanctions in history against the country….he also suggests the President is anti-religion, particularly with the issue of contraceptives in the healthcare bill, which he also included in his Mass. plan.

“he also suggests the President is anti-religion, particularly with the issue of contraceptives in the healthcare bill, which he also included in his Mass. plan.”

Which, if you look at Mass. state law, Romney did not.

Kyle, it was interesting to see Santorum simply eviscerated by Romney and Paul on his NCLB vote. The pundits later in the evening all pointed the dichotomy between Santorum’s description of himself – courage – following his rather tepid explanation of “taking one for the team” “it was against his principles” on that vote.

I thought all sides got in good punches on earmarks, which shows they all support them in one way or another, just to different degrees.

I also thought Santorum’s attack on Romney’s support of TARP was misguided, and Romney’s response was great (not wanting ALL banks to fail and pointing out Santorum’s support for steel industry bailouts).

I was surprised at how laid-back Newt was last night. He made some good points, but for a guy who arguably needs a knockout punch or two, he seemed more willing to counter-punch rather than take the fight directly to the front runners.

It does seem as if Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are in cahoots in some fashion. Don’t know the hows or the whys about it, but they are two of the more unlikeliest candidates to join forces against another in that field.

I am not sure what facts I ignored…..so re-reading the second paragraph, Romney was for a birth control waiver to Catholic hospitals before he took it out and required them to comply?

As for the 13th century reference, I should have made it more clear so even a hillbilly could understand. That was the period right before the renaissance swept Europe and brought the age of reason and enlightenment. My modern day points of reference to Santorum 13th century mindset are his disdain for birth control, women working outside the house, equal rights for gay Americans, and for proposing the teaching of “Intelligent Design” in science classes.

Tiberius – we may be talking about two different issues, I am referring to the Massachusetts health care law, passed while Romney was Governor, that requires that companies, including religious hospitals, to provide coverage for birth control. This is the same issue on which Romney is currently attacking the President.

What you are correct on is that Mass. does not require all hospitals to supply the morning after pill, even after rape, but if they deny such care, they have to provide transportation for the patient to another location that will provide such treatment.

What it boils down to is that saying things like the President is the most anti-religious in our nation’s history has no basis in fact and is only meant to rile up mouth breathers with red meat. This is particularly outrageous given the fact that Romney’s polygamous Grandfather was forced to move to Mexico because of religious intolerance.

Actually, it does!

Article IV, Sections 1 & 2:
Section 1

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

Section 2: 1: The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.

Basically, if a contract is entered into in one state, it must be recognized in all 50. If gay marriage is legal and recognized in ONE state (and it is in 7…plus the Disctict of Columbia), then, it must be recognized in all 50…therefore, it’s de facto LEGAL!

Plus….add in effect the 14th Amendment – equal protection under the law……..

Sorry, conservatives, but while the current Disaster-in-Chief’s energy policies are ridiculous at best, the current gas price hike is due to WORLD markets that need gasoline more than we do (demand) and a healthy supply of gas being produced in the U.S. today. We’re SELLING our gas to other countries (China being one of them) and reducing our trade imbalance by doing so.

Bill O’ Reilly, Stuart Varney and Lou Dobbs all covered this in the last few days.

That being said, the demand for special blends for the summertime (mandated by the different state’s fuel requirements) is coming up, and you can expect the supply to decrease and the demand to go up, which will increase gas prices further.

And you CAN thank Federal energy polices for THAT upcoming increase.

It’s true that whomever is President doesn’t really have a lot to do with gas prices but when the prices are going down, whomever is President struts around and takes credit for it, so when things are going to hell, they get the blame. Obama who as a state senator voted to protect doctors who killed babies who survived the abortion…”

Only 4 newspapers & 1 wire service reported on his remarks today. The AJC was factually wrong. Gingrich was NOT “referring to Obama’s opposition to a bill outlawing late-term abortions…” Another newspaper’s initial article has disappeared.

Gingrich was referring to Obama’s opposition in the Ill. state senate in ‘01, ‘02 & ‘03 that would have mandated that a child born alive as a result of a botched abortion be given medical care.

Have you ever looked at the statistics around gays who DO marry as opposed to those who demand gay marriage? It’s as if they’re pushing for something they’re likely to reject. They’re actually more in love with the idea of marriage than the institution itself. None of my gay friends are looking to get married.

This research report offers estimates of
gay and lesbian marriage rates based on the
best available data. The highest estimate to
date of the proportion of gays and lesbians
who have married in any jurisdiction where
it is available is 16.7% (Massachusetts).
More typically, our survey of marriage
statistics from various countries that legally
recognize same-sex unions suggests that
today between 1% and 5% of gays and
lesbians have entered into a same-sex
marriage. In the Netherlands, which has had
same-sex marriage as a legal option for the
longest period, between 2% and 6% of gays
and lesbians have entered marriages in the
first five years.
Trend data is extremely limited, but the
available data suggest that the number of
gay marriages tends to decrease after an
initial burst (reflecting pent up demand).
Whether same-sex marriage will emerge as
common or normative among gays and
lesbians, or fade as time and novelty passes,
cannot yet be determined.

All legalistic documents have moral values attached to the reasons to write the law or Constitution. For example: We say that it is against the law to commit murder. This is a value judgement that we made that murder is wrong and we must not allow people to do it without consequences. The same applies to gay marriage. Without seeing the statistics, I figure the vast majority of abortions occur in the first trimester, and at that, early on in the trimester.

Kyle W, heads up.

According to The Daily Caller, a politically conservative news site (via The Detroit News), the United Auto Workers union is helping to organize a group called The 99% Spring, which describes itself as an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The 99% Spring is a coalition of 43 organizations, but The Daily Caller says the UAW is the “powerhouse” behind the effort that seeks to train 100,000 Americans “for non-violent direct action.” While UAW president Bob King has voiced support for the movement, an unknown source told The Detroit News that the UAW is merely a part of the coalition and is not its “mastermind.”

Josh Bolotsky, a so-called online organizer listed as a contact for The 99% Spring, told The Daily Caller that “an independent tech issue led to some docs, both public and private, appearing briefly on [the UAW's public-facing web site],” adding that activists at the Movement Strategy Center and the New Organizing Institute were “[t]he chief co-coordinators of the overall project.”

Full copies of the documentation obtained by The Daily Caller from the UAW website can be seen after the break… so we suggest you draw your own conclusions.

That works for me.

From this day forth, I decree that civil unions must precede church sanctioned marriage. Then everybody’s happy up to and until the time gays demand the church accept their marriage.

I’ve always seen the unborn as innocent bystanders. Then there’s the other type of bystander:

The bystander effect or Genovese syndrome is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer any means of help in an emergency situation to the victim when other people are present. The probability of help has in the past been thought to be inversely related to the number of bystanders; in other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help. The mere presence of other bystanders greatly decreases intervention. This happens because as the number of bystanders increases, any given bystander is less likely to interpret the incident as a problem, and less likely to assume responsibility for taking action.

Too many people suffer from Genovese syndrome.

And yet, I don’t call for ANY of these things, Linda, which is why you are so very wrong about me in so many ways.

Here’s what you conservatives have the right to do:

You may poo-poo the decision to abort all you want.

You may pray for the salvation of the mother and the “child”.

You may look down upon them with disdain.

You may forgive them if you so choose.

But you MAY NOT order them about as if they are your property, because they are just as free as you are.

#2 Gingrich and the R’s promising lower gas prices is for the foolish to believe. Fuel is a commodity and the price is a market function. All China or India need is for 25% more of their respective populations to want cars to drive and that alone will push gas prices higher. There is a simple equation that the R’s don’t want people to remember: more demand than supply will create the conditions for higher prices (even if that fuel is produced here in the US of A — the oil companies will want to make that profit no matter where the oil, gas, or coal comes from).

By your statement above, you appear to be supporting the Lib School of Thought which proclaims that a woman has absolute rights over her own body, so that no one, particularly a man, can enforce any rules of conduct whatsoever. If that is your position, then it’s not a very sound one. The law absolutely does, in fact, regulate personal behavior on many other matters.

In the end, pregnancy is a unique situation because 2 lives are involved. It’s not possible to confer absolute rights to the baby, because that would require the woman to surrender full control of her own body and organs. At the same time, it’s not possible to confer absolute rights to the mother as explained above. Thus, two competing interests have to be weighed. Which is why I support abortion with lots of restrictions.

“What do you think is the difference between genocide & infanticide?”

Certainly genocide is on a much larger scale in the immediate result, rather than one at a time. Certainly genocide is targeting a specific group based on some of many different circumstances; i.e., color of skin, religious beliefs, etc, while infanticide is between the mother and the infant for whatever reason. In addition, genocide will get you an international manhunt, while infanticide likely will not.

I have said repeatedly that I would have been completely in, fully in support of the federal bill that everybody supported – which was to say –that you should provide assistance to any infant that was born – even if it was as a consequence of an induced abortion. That was not the bill that was presented at the state level. What that bill also was doing was trying to undermine Roe vs. Wade. By the way, we also had a bill, a law already in place in Illinois that insured life saving treatment was given to infants.

So for people to suggest that I and the Illinois medical society, so Illinois doctors were somehow in favor of withholding life saving support from an infant born alive is ridiculous. It defies commonsense and it defies imagination and for people to keep on pushing this is offensive and it’s an example of the kind of politics that we have to get beyond. It’s one thing for people to disagree with me about the issue of choice, it’s another thing for people to out and out misrepresent my positions repeatedly, even after they know that they’re wrong. And that’s what’s been happening.

Brody: I wanted to give you a chance to clear it up.

Obama: I appreciate it.

Brody: Thank you so much.

I read your link and went to all the other sub-links. Nothing was said where Obama supported infanticide. NOTHING.

Did he want a perfect bill before supporting it? Probably. That is a part of this discussion that I can agree with. Too many times legislators try to put so many things into a bill in an attempt to get support from many different sides that it can make the bill even worse than if it was a single thread.

Should he have offered up an alternative? Absolutely! But he is incompetent, so I am not surprised that he didn’t. He’s really a very lazy elected official who doesn’t want to do the hard work of governing, in my opinion.

You and I can both be disappointed that he didn’t do more, but I am not going to falsely accuse ANYONE of doing something they didn’t do.

Webster v. Reproductive Health Services

Webster v. Reproductive Health Services, 492 U.S. 490 (1989), was a United States Supreme Court decision on July 3, 1989 upholding a Missouri law that imposed restrictions on the use of state funds, facilities, and employees in performing, assisting with, or counseling on abortions. The Supreme Court in Webster allowed for states to legislate in an area that had previously been thought to be forbidden under Roe.

The Supreme Court’s decision

The Supreme Court overturned the decision of the lower court, stating that:
The court did not need to consider the constitutionality of the law’s preamble, as it is not used to justify any abortion regulation otherwise invalid under Roe v. Wade.
The prohibitions on the use of public employees, facilities, and funds did not violate any of the Court’s abortion decisions, as no affirmative right to the use of state aid for nontherapeutic abortions existed. The state could allocate resources in favor of childbirth over abortion if it so chose.
Provisions requiring testing for viability after 20 weeks of pregnancy were constitutional, but those limiting abortions in the second trimester of pregnancy were unconstitutional.

The opinions

Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s opinion was joined in its entirety only by Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy. In discussing the fetal viability section, the plurality asserted that the right to abortion was a “liberty interest protected by the Due Process clause” subject to restriction by any laws which would permissibly further a rational state interest such as protecting potential life. This, said the plurality, would require the court to “modify and narrow Roe and succeeding cases.”
Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Antonin Scalia joined Rehnquist’s opinion except for the section on viability testing. Each wrote a separate concurring opinion. O’Connor claimed that narrowing Roe v. Wade in the context of the Webster litigation, where upholding Missouri’s law could arguably be squared with Roe, would violate an important principle of judicial restraint. She then explained that she voted to uphold Missouri’s law because she did not feel that it would place an undue burden on the right to abortion.
Scalia, who was angered by the refusal of the plurality, especially O’Connor, to overturn Roe v. Wade, wrote a sharp opinion concurring in the judgment. In his concurrence, he argued that the Court should have overturned Roe, rather than attempting to uphold both Roe and the laws at issue, and he attacked O’Connor’s justification for declining to overturn Roe. He also agreed with Blackmun’s assertion that the approach of the plurality would make Roe a dead letter.
Blackmun wrote a dissenting opinion which focused on the plurality’s desired narrowing of Roe as described in the section on the viability testing requirement. In effect, Blackmun wrote, the plurality’s approach would overturn Roe, since it would allow a state to put virtually any restriction on abortion so long as it was rationally related to promoting potential life. Noting that the plurality and Scalia together were only a single vote away from effectively overruling Roe, he wrote “I fear for the future” and “a chill wind blows.”

“So, he votes against the Ill. versions of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act 3 times by either voting present or no, & you think that is okay?”

How many times do I have to admit that Obama is incompetent, Linda? Not knowing what was going through his head (if anything) during that time, I can only comment on what I see, not what YOU believe. Your emotions are blinding you to alternatives (once again).

“Since the US Senate voted 98-0 in favor of this bill, do you think Obama was minimally outside of the mainstream thinking in the Senate?”

Different bills, Linda. Do YOU think he would have voted for it if he had been in the U.S. Senate? Don’t bother. Your preconceived notions already tell me what you think. You’re as easy to read as a cheap novel in that regard.

“There is NO doubt that Obama supported infanticide & that the corrupt media, including the AJC tried to cover it up.”

Actually, there is EVERY doubt that he “supported” infanticide, as was stated as nauseum before. Opposition for ONE part of a bill does not equal support for another. Get over yourself.

Oh, and one other thing, Linda. Don’t ever consider running for elected office. People who serve are bombarded with contradicting votes on a daily basis, and you’re not up to handling more than one concept at a time. Trust me. I’ve served and I know how this works. Look at Santorum the other night, trying to defend his support for NCLB or his support for Arlen Specter. In the case of NCLB, he was given a choice between a bad bill and support for his President. He chose poorly. In the case of Specter he determined that supporting him over Toomey was better for future judicial nominees if Specter had won. Again, he chose poorly, but elected officials are given these choices all the time – vote for one part of a bill to get something good, even if the other parts are bad. Some people vote against bills if they aren’t perfect, as in the case of Obama in Illinois. He thought it would look great on his future resume if he was championing the causes that would get him elected, not realizing that in the future really dumb people would turn around his opposition to one part of the bill into support for killing babies, but then, that’s the political neophyte in him.

Case in point: While serving in office, I voted against the annual budget, stating my opposition to the increase in our sheriff’s budget. Now, understand, the sheriff was getting about a 5% increase at a time when other departments were being asked to take less, and he has a nasty way of spending money for certain things he didn’t originally ask for, and I wanted his money to be a bit more controlled. In addition, I had already found a way for him to get a couple of new (expensive) pieces of equipment he had been crying for for years. Guess what? (even you might be able to see this coming) I was immediately painted as being “against public safety”, even though I was willing to approve a 3% increase and after finding ways to get him his new equipment (and bolstering the fire department budget too boot). But I was accused of being against public safety.

Sound familiar, Linda?

Take off your blinders and look at the big picture. Obama is a lousy President and was a fairly incompetent state senator, but he has never, and likely will never, supported infanticide.

You know, @@, we’ve had a fairly good relationship on these blogs, but you’re beginning to take liberties in your opinion of me that have no basis in reality. So I take exception to your uninformed opinion of me and my work ethic.

More importantly, why do you think it is your job in life (if you actually do anything, that is) to put yourself out on behalf of unborn children and interfere in the lives of people you don’t know and who can never affect you?

md, you really need to up your reading comprehension skills, son.

I was the one who originally said that the law wasn’t consistent, which has been my argument all along. The law treats a life differently in the womb that out of the womb when it comes to abortion, which is why (while I disagree with the stupidity of charging someone with more than one murder in the case of a pregnant woman), one is legal and one is not. On that, there is NO argument. If you don’t like it, change the law. Have at it. Good luck to you.

Below is a column from Howie Carr, one of my favorite columnists (sorry, Kyle!) writing about the annual summary of taxpayers in Massachusetts. For a little history, the state legislature years ago lowered the mandatory income tax rate but kept a higher, VOLUNTARY rate in place for those who wanted to “pay their fair share”. Remember that Mass. is HEAVILY Democrat populated, yet for some reason, very few liberals want to step up and help fund the society they helped to create. Interesting to note that it is largely the poorest taxpayers who contribute the higher rate each year, rather than the trust fund limousine liberals like the Kerry’s or Kennedy’s.

Read and enjoy.

md, the law, in general is inconsistent. Abortion law at it’s very core is not. See Rowe v. Wade. As was pointed out ad nauseum regarding gun ownership, the BASIS of gun ownership is consistent; the application of gun laws regarding unfettered access to guns is not. So, too, is abortion law. The BASIS of Rowe v. Wade is that abortions are legal. The application of abortion law can be up to the states, but the basis is still there and still CONSISTENT. You may not ban gun ownership outright and you may not ban abortions outright. Do you get that, md?

As to the reading comprehension remark, if I didn’t have to explain this over and over and over again to you, you might have a point.

But the fact that I have to do this yet again shows I’m right about that as well.

Did ya hear Obummers answer to gas prices yesterday? “Tiberius…..IT DOES!”

UGA, if your grasp of the English language is as tenuous as it appears to be regard the simple concept of “for” and “against”, then I wouldn’t go bragging about what institution of supposedly higher learning you graduated from.

I am against abortion personally. However, I am a guy, so that means that I cannot practice that belief in my daily life, so being against abortion doesn’t really mean a whole lot (as has been proven by the dearth of responses regarding who has actually prevented same this morning). However, I am FOR personal freedom and responsibility MORE than I am against abortion.

Don’t know what (or how) you were taught growing up, but the world is not a black and white proposition in most instances, and as has been shown before, one can be against a bill to ban infanticide if it has other things unrelated to infanticide within it, and not be FOR infanticide.

So again, while I am personally against abortion, and can assure you that will never have one myself, my objections to people unrelated to me telling me what I can or cannot do is stronger than my objections regarding abortion. In no way, shape form or definition, does it make me FOR abortion.

End of story.

Hillbilly D

February 24th, 2012

Abortion is the ultimate selfish act. If a person didn’t have one, the odds are well into the high 90% range that the baby would have been born healthy and happy. It’s taking one life, to make an irresponsible person’s life easier.

I had a friend who had a baby die, from a rare disease, at about the 6th month of pregnancy. Other than it’s very small size, it looked just like any other baby.

So parse, split hairs, justify and jump through all the hoops you want to but in an abortion, a life has been taken and nothing can change that. As for the law, as Dickens said, (paraphrase) “if that’s what the law supposes, then the law is an ass”.

Slavery and Jim Crow were once legal, too. This is just as wrong as that was.

While I love my nephew dearly (even if he can’t express that love in return very well), if there were a way to avoid my brother’s downturn by aborting that nephew before he was born, I’d do it and express my support of that action in a heartbeat.

Tiberius@11:41, A murderer does not have to SAY that he is in favor of murder to be convicted of murder. He is not even required to testify in court.

I have a sad life? I’m not the one who has been posting to myself for hours. I’m not the one in pain.

I judge people on my preconceived notions? I’m not the one who wants to sacrifice my nephew in exchange for my brother.

We’re not discussing the local sheriff or the city councilman. We’re talking about the president of the US, voting against a bill that would prevent children born alive to have medical care. There is right & there is wrong. Then there is horror. The first time I read this, I had tears in my eyes. It’s the worst thing I have ever discovered about the president. For you to dismiss it speaks volumes about your soul.

I did not use the word “racist” because it was easy.

I did it because it is “true”.

Since Obama was elected president the white robes and hoods have come out of the closet and car trunk.

It has been very easy to disrespect Obama when George W. Bush were president black people did not disrepect him.

We disagreed with him.

But what you guys are doing is “very racist” and disrespectful.

But black people and Obama know how to deal with hate and racism.

If we made it from Africa to the United States on crowded slaves ships and we made through slavery; what you guys are doing now ” IS A PIECE OF CAKE for us to deal with.”

“A murderer does not have to SAY that he is in favor of murder to be convicted of murder. He is not even required to testify in court.”

So now you’re equating the actions of a state legislator to a murderer? Pathetic, Linda.

“I have a sad life?”

Yes, so do.

“I’m not the one who has been posting to myself for hours.”

I post to respnd to others, never myself. What is it about the English language you do NOT understand, Linda?

“I’m not the one in pain.”

No, you just cause it – to others.

“I judge people on my preconceived notions?”

Absolutely you do. Yo assume (and you know what that word means) about people based on one action instead of taking the totality of their life and actions into account.

“I’m not the one who wants to sacrifice my nephew in exchange for my brother.”

I suggest you re-read what I posted, you jerk.

“We’re not discussing the local sheriff or the city councilman. We’re talking about the president of the US, voting against a bill that would prevent children born alive to have medical care.”

Actually, we’re talking about a state senator, not the President of the United States. Get at least SOME of the facts straight, will you?

“There is right & there is wrong.”

Yes and YOU are wrong.

“Then there is horror.”

Yes, enslaving women to do your bidding is horrible.

“The first time I read this, I had tears in my eyes. It’s the worst thing I have ever discovered about the president. For you to dismiss it speaks volumes about your soul.”

And once again, you are overly emotional and erratic in your thinking. Your emotions get the best of any hope you might to find reason in life.

Romney has no ideas that he truly believes, so he can’t argue a position; he must ridicule you. Santorum is just too much of a preacher to ever win the independent vote and he could not lead as the President. The Republican Party seems to vote based on the poll results that are meaningless. Let’s not vote for the candidate that has the only workable tax and energy plans. Let’s not vote for the candidate that can actually beat President O’bama. Let’s not vote for the candidate that has set and achieved goals for the advancement of conservatism. Newt has done more to advance the cause of conservatism than anyone in the presidential race. He not only ended 40 years of Democratic control in the House, he ended Democratic control of southern states like Georgia too. Republicans forget how much Newt has done for conservatism. Regardless of how he did it and whether he made a few mistakes along the way, he accomplished his goals. For example, he didn’t quit until Republicans controlled the house. It took him over 12 years to achieve this goal. (Funny, how people are so quick to conclude that Newt quit the speakership because he was scared he didn’t have the votes to win. How difficult is it to understand that he would rather step down than risk the Republicans losing control of the house.) Unfortunately, people just don’t get that the one and only reason Newt has ever done anything is not just for conservative values, but for American principles. Georgia should not allow states Newt hasn’t campaigned in to give this away so easily. It is too important, not to him, but to all Americans.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, talked about being a member of the “Coup Crew” that attempted to unseat then-Rep. Newt Gingrich as House Speaker in 1997. In case you missed it, Graham told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren that, in retrospect, he and the plotters were too harsh on the man who led them out of the political wilderness in 1994: I can’t imagine his job. The first time Republicans had the congress in 40 years, trying to lead a revolution, taking people like me that came here to burn the place down and govern the country and deal with Bill Clinton — a good politician. Looking back, I appreciate how hard his job was better than I did in 1997. And I’m here to say, as the guy who was in the coup, that looking back we were too hard on him and if he got to be the nominee I think he could win.”
