Poll Position: What’s your rooting interest in the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is almost here once again, and the Falcons … well, they’ve long since packed up their lockers until next fall. Atlanta has plenty of transplants, so there may be plenty of New Yorkers or New Englanders for whom that’s no big deal. (For those non-football fans among us: The game will be between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.) But it leaves those of us who live here with a dilemma: which team to root for?

What's your rooting interest in the Super Bowl?

  • Who cares? (12 Votes)
  • I just want a good game. Or commercials. (11 Votes)
  • I'm a Giants or Patriots fan (9 Votes)
  • The team with my favorite player (5 Votes)
  • My team's conference champ (4 Votes)
  • AFC because I'm a Republican, or NFC because I'm a Democrat (4 Votes)
  • The team with a player from my college team (0 Votes)

Total Voters: 45

Loading ... Loading ...

Go for the champion from your team’s conference? (For Falcons fans, that would be the Giants.) Root for a favorite player? Maybe it’s the team that has one or more players from your college team of choice. (UGA fans: That’d be the Giants, who have running back D.J. — formerly Danny — Ware. Tech fans have ex-Jacket Gary Guyton playing linebacker for the Patriots. Everyone else: Do your own research.)

How about politics? While both New York and Massachusetts are all but assured of going in Barack Obama’s column this fall, the Democratic candidate has a much better chance when the Super Bowl is won by an NFC team (3-4 in those years) than an AFC team (1-3). So maybe Republicans ought to pull for the Patriots and Democrats for the Giants.

Or maybe you’re just hoping for a good, close game.

In any case, that’s this week’s Poll Position. Whatever your choice, register it in the nearby poll and in the comments thread below.

Pulling for the GIANTS……New England still hasn’t absolved itself of the cheating it’s done!

I have lived in San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh, when each of their football teams won the super bowl. In fact, they each one the first year I lived in each. Of all these, and including Atlanta, where I now live, the only time I was interested in the Super Bowl was in Pittsburgh because you have real fans there. They all come out for their teams, all the time, put up big banners, and really make a party of it. St. Louis is another “sports” town. As for the rest, ho hum.

Ill be rooting for the rich guys.

They deserve it because, as we all know, the rich are the ones who really have it tough in America and pay all the taxes.

Its the poor that really have it made with all those benefits and government programs.

“the Democratic candidate has a much better chance when the Super Bowl is won by an NFC team (3-4 in those years) than an AFC team (1-3). ”

Even if I weren’t a huge Patriots fan (and yes, HDB the so-called “cheating” has long been forgotten except for miserable people without lives like you), this gives me yet another reason to root for them!

And wallbanger, you’ve obviously never experienced sports in Boston. Over 300 Red Sox home games and counting at Fenway Park sold-out (an MLB record), and the ONLY new football stadium (Gillette Stadium in Foxboro) built ENTIRELY with private funds.

I’m rooting for the Labradors in the Puppy Bowl, though the Jack Russells made a good showing last year. It’s gonna be a close one.

Pats big over NY. Brady has a chip on his shoulder and the little Manning brother is going down.

BTW, UGA will never ever ever ever win a national title.

Do What???, I’m thinking that too many prognosticators are ignoring the MHK thing going for the Patriots.

They’re playing for her memory and for their owner.

I’m hoping for that huge Pats blowout as well. That Ravens game nearly gave me a heart attack!

I wouldn’t read too much into the football game and presidential election. I remember back in 04 when some in the media were talking about the Redskins playing on the Sunday before election day. They said that the sitting president always lost when the Redskins lost on that day yet when they lost, Bush won anyway.

Since I like Eli, I’d like to see the Giants win but it’s not going to affect my day, either way. Probably only about a 10% chance I’ll even watch any of the game. It’s almost time for pitchers and catchers to report, anyway.

There definitely is a real dilemma for us here. Do we watch the game knowing it will be a great one while knowing at the same time we will become ill thinking how bad the Falcons are?

None. I don’t give a rip about sports of any kind. After the first football strike in the ’70s that’s all it took to turn this once fan against all professional sports period.

1.2 million Americans completely dropped out of the workforce last month, unable to find work and left with no hope, and the liberals celebrate.

The Miami Dolphins are the only NFL team to finish the season & win the Super Bowl with an undefeated (i.e. PERFECT or “lossless”) record.

Speaking of records, our 44th, yet illegitimate, President BLOWS.
