Gingrich fires back at Carter’s ’subtlety of racism’ charge

In an interview to air on Piers Morgan’s show tonight, Jimmy Carter suggests Newt Gingrich is engaging in “that subtlety of racism” when he talks about food stamps and “welfare mommas”:

Over the phone a few minutes ago, Gingrich gave me this response to Carter’s words:

It’s sad to watch people on the left who have no solutions for the problems of poverty and who automatically start talking about racism the minute a conservative starts talking about how to solve poverty. Carter tried The Atlanta Project*, it didn’t work. You would think he’d have a little happiness that someone was trying to solve poverty.

Gingrich sounded cautiously optimistic about his chances in South Carolina but did not commit to a particular share of the vote or ranking he thinks he needs to hit. (”I hope to come in first.”) If he does well there and in Florida on Jan. 31, Super Tuesday on March 6 — with Georgia as a major prize — will be a huge day in the campaign. Texas, too, “depending on where Governor [Rick] Perry is.” If Perry is out of the race by then, as many observers now expect, Gingrich expects to do well in Texas relative to Mitt Romney.

As for Georgia: Gingrich cited his friendships in the state, including his supporter in the governor’s mansion, and volunteers, many of whom are working for him in South Carolina at the moment. His campaign themes here are unlikely to differ from those elsewhere:

Jobs and economic growth will be number one. National security and American strength, number two; American exceptionalism, number three; and balancing the budget, number four.

*I have never heard of The Atlanta Project. Fwiw, this evaluation is not exactly boastful (”TAP doesn’t claim to have all the answers, or the solution for eliminating urban decay”) and it’s probably not a good sign that the link to the TAP page at the Carter Center doesn’t work and the most recent document about TAP on the Carter Center’s site is from 1999. If someone has more recent or complete information about TAP, post it below.

Newt has proved, many times over, that he will say anything to get elected. So, of course, he is engaging in subtle and not so subtle racism. Newt is a smart guy and he knows how many white votes he needs and how many black votes he doesn’t need to win the primary. When he gets into a primary where he actually needs substantial black support, he will say whatever he thinks will win him votes.

Gingrich: It’s sad to watch people on the left who have no solutions for the problems of poverty and who automatically start talking about racism the minute a conservative starts talking about how to solve poverty.

Excuse me, but what exactly are Gingrich’s solutions for poverty? Eliminate child labor laws, fire the adults, and replace them with children?

Now THAT is sad.

Carter was the worst president in a long time. He was also our worst governor and George Busbee had to come in behind him and clean his mess up – in the midst of a horrible national economy of Jimmy Carter’s. I would think Carter would be embarassed to show his face, much less jump in with crackpot remarks. He was a complete and miserable failure and virtually every state acknowledged that after his pathetic one term.

So every time he switches from fixing the poor by having their kids work as janitors to talking about black teenage unemployment, he isn’t trying to draw a connection? Or when he talks about food stamp president and then says he’ll go to the NAACP to tell them to demand paychecks, he’s not implying blacks utilize food stamps? Why not address poor rural white Americans? Do the poor only live in inner city neighborhoods?

The dude is absolutely pulling the race card out…albeit in weakly coded form. BTW, I’m not black…I just someone that can’t stand this type of political code and the bigoted cheers from the SC audience. No wonder they battle it out w/ Mississippi to be last in education.

Actually, George W Bush was the worst president in modern history. It should be noted that the Bush administration consulted with Gingrich throughout his term. Essentially, Gingrich wants to continue and build upon Bush’s tax cuts for the rich/corporate welfare/deregulation policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

It’s also worth remembering that Gingrich was a cheerleader for the Iraq war and he wants to applied his failed judgment to Iran and other foreign policy issues.

I don’t know why anybody thinks that we need Bush 2.0, but apparently, some do.

Jimmy62

So the fact that more white people are on food stamps than black still makes him racist? And who said anything about eliminating the safety net? An economic safety net is fine, but when near half the country is using it, it’s not a safety net, it’s a mass entitlement/income redistribution scheme. I’m not sure how that empowers anyone. Nor am I sure how being against that is racist. The only racism I can see here is you guys who manage to insert race in to every argument, which is why we will never be able to have an honest discussion about poverty in this country.

What age is acceptable for kids to start learning responsibility

Are you seriously asking me this question? Do you seriously want to have the same debate about child labor laws that our country had a century ago? Do you seriously need to be educated on why child labor laws were put into place in the first place?

If you want kids to learn responsibility, send them to school year round, send them to school all day, and make them study. If making kids clean toilets in public bathrooms is your idea of teaching responsibility, then please, don’t have kids.

I know you know this, but just a reminder the former Bush Tax Cuts were for every tax payer, not just the wealthy. 85% of the money went to the middle class and poor. Rafe,

Here’s the Tax Policy Center talking about the effects of the Bush tax cuts if made permanent: “…the tax cuts would be regressive, raising after-tax income by a greater percentage for high-income households than for all others…Several other commonly used measures of the distributional effects also suggest that the benefits of making the tax cuts permanent would be tilted toward high-income households in general and toward households in the top 1 percent of the income distribution in particular.”

As I’m sure you know, Obama’s concession to extend the Bush tax cuts was ransom for ratifying START (which Republicans supported until they found they could demand a ransom), passing a budget, and passing payroll tax cuts. As much as you’d like it to be so, paying the GOP’s ransom does not convert the Bush tax cuts into the Obama tax cuts.

Certainly the former president is acquainted with the subtlety of racism. From the Washington Examiner:

“Carter, in the early 1960s, supported legislation in the Georgia State Senate, which would have effectively eviscerated the Civil Rights Act, and would have prevented the desegregation of public schools there as well as open housing.”

“In 1966, during the contested gubernatorial election in Georgia, Carter had a choice as a state senator. He could support the Republican, Bo Calloway. He could support the moderate Democrat, Ellis Arnall. Or he could stand with Lester Maddox, one of the repugnant leaders of segregation in the South. Carter chose the stand with Maddox, in order to protect his political future.”

“During the nasty 1970 Democratic primary for governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter’s campaign mass produced photos of his opponent, Carl Sanders, with the black members of the Atlanta Hawks. Sanders was the real progressive in the campaign.”

“Even as late as 1976, Carter, while campaigning in the South, praised Senators John Stennis and Jim Eastland, two longtime Southern Democrats who were supporters of “Massive Resistance,” the attempt by some whites in the South to oppose racial integration. For the record, President Lyndon Johnson had also supported Massive Resistance early in his Congress in Texas.”

“When reporters caught up with Stennis to ask him his position on racial desegregation he replied, “I’m against it. Always have been and always will be.””

“Also that fall, Carter’s home church, the Plains Baptist Church, voted to ban blacks from joining. Carter did not quit in protest, knowing it would undermine his “Southern Strategy” in the election. Weakly, he said he would attempt to change the policy from the inside.”

For all of his screwups, President Carter had three legitimate accomplishments in his not-quite-brief-enough administration.

(1) Abolition of Interstate Commerce Commission, which set the rates interstate trucks and trains could charge for transporting good.

(2) Abolition of the Civil Aeronautics Board, which set the fares airlines could charge passengers in interstate travel.

(3) Effective abolition of the Glass-Steagall proffered Reg Q, which told banks how much they could pay on interest-bearing accounts.

For now I see no Obama initiative up to par with those few acts of small genius. Thus Carter is no longer the worst president since Buchanan.

Gingrich probably understands the elderly ego of President Carter. He mildly reminds the world that he, Gingrich, is not a racist to mention poverty. Nor even to mention that teenagers learn a lot by working.

Thus goes the recruiting of Democrats to speak against Republicans. Will President Clinton join the “maddening crowd”? I doubt it. He’s smart politically. I haven’t heard Hillary either. Maybe they are too smart to join the Lee Atwater smudge brand of politics. The Dems used it for eight years with Bush. They still try and fail.

Do not show yourself heated up at anyone making his way successful,
At the man carrying out [his] ideas.

8 Let anger alone and leave rage;
Do not show yourself heated up only to do evil.

If you speak up and say anything these race pimps and Obama supporters perceive as negative towards Obama then you will be called a racist. HDB – the problem with you and your Leftie buddies is as Ronald Reagan stated – you know so much that is not true.

Clinton put CRA on steroids and with Janet’s help forced banks to make loans they otherwise would not. Republicnas want Glass-Stegal repealed but Clinton agreed only after receiving pressure from the Southern Christian Leadership Confrerence, Lowery’s group. I won’t go as far to say it was a conspiracy, but the two certainly did fit well together. After that, the greed set in and we have today’s housing market which no doubt it and energy prices are the two biggest reasons the economy has not quickly recovered. BTW – Barry is trying to give large mortgage reductions to the same people who should have never had the loan in the first place. And, we certainly see at the moment how sincere he is on energy indenpendence.

If you want overwhelming suppport in denying CRA try Jay’s blog, most there believe as you.

If you would take off you partisan spin machine mentality for one minute then you would know the real reason why the metro Atlanta area is not doing very well right now. When you build one of the fastest growing economies in the world almost solely on the backs of the construction industry then you have a recession and the housing market is still in a depressed state then your economy is going to be at the bottom. Add to that fact the increase of over 1 million people then you can lead in business moving in a record levels and still have an overall bad economy.

This economy was built on the backs of the construction industry which was driven and was dependent on companies and people moving here. The entire industry was poorly regulated…see bank failures, miserable zoning, traffic congestion etc…

Now over the last 10 years we have allowed ourselves to fall further behind the curve and the benefits of the region no longer outweigh the negatives. Surprise, surprise sufficient numbers of people and companies are not moving here, and folks like you just didn’t see it coming.

You are looking at the results not the reasons.

The Democrats and the Republicans are to blame because it does not matter the county (Cobb, Fulton, Dekalb, Gwinn, Clayton) they all started changing their zoning laws to have very dense housing. When you make the parasites responsible for there actions and have to pay their own way then they are not going to want to stay and will look for a more inviting place to live. There are many cases where minorities with less education etc are hired over more qualified white people. In fact, just look at the guy who is in the White House right now. He never released his grades, has no leadership qualities, never dealt with a payroll in his life, never had any executive experience etc….

In this country just being “white” is qualification enough. I’ll bet those minorities who they hired had the same education and could do the job just as well or they wouldn’t have applied for the job in the first place.

I think most Americans are tired of having the Race Card and the ole slavery mentality thrown at us. It has been almost 2 generations since “segregation” was declared unconstitutional. It has been a lot longer since the “slavery” days. Most people of all races now have an equal opportunity to get an education and build some character. Many want to say they are still drowning; yet they are in a shallow amount of water and all they have to do is to stand up and be saved from drowning. Jobs and earning money in early life teaches responsibility and gives dignity to the wage earner. This is the American way of values, respect and life.

Taxes have to be raised, the question is who will pay? Here in Georgia in Governor Deal clearly favors the wealthy. Last year he proposed private jet owners/Gulfstream/General Dynamics be entitled to a new sales tax exemption for parts in repairs, in the meantime, to make up the difference of the revenue lost, he suggested adding a new sales on labor for the repair of automobiles. It seems in this bad economy people, the lower classes are having to hang onto their old vehicles, longer. So, here you have it, Deal’s idea of how to broaden the tax base: robbing from the poor, to give it to the rich.

Look for more of the same this year. He says his work is still not done.
