Showdown time for Kasim Reed and Occupy Atlanta

I will have misjudged Kasim Reed if he allows this to happen again tonight (from the AJC):

The activists encamped at Woodruff Park plan to leave Tuesday afternoon for a protest march to a downtown Atlanta bank headquarters, but vowed in an e-mail to return to the park and remain there “for as long as it takes.”

The group’s vow to stay at the park comes after being told Monday night that they were violating city rules prohibiting remaining in city parks after 11 p.m. …

Late Tuesday morning, the number of protesters at the park had dwindled to around 75, with several dozen tents still pitched on the park’s grass. Those remaining on Tuesday morning were low-key, not chanting or carrying the protest signs that were seen on Monday.

An anticipated showdown between the protesters and police never materialized, as authorities made no effort to forcibly remove the group.

“We’re allowing the protesters the opportunity to leave the park peacefully,” Candace Byrd, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s chief of staff, said Monday night.

But no deadline was given at the impromptu press conference, and overnight police presence around the park was minimal. …

It’s uncertain how long the city will allow the group to stay. Byrd said officials held two meetings Monday with protest organizers to inform them of ordinances preventing “urban camping.”

Reed is as politically astute as any elected official from Georgia. Surely, he knows that it’s one thing to show some forbearance before telling the likes of the Occupy Atlanta folks to go home — and another thing altogether to watch them flout the law after being informed of it and given a chance to comply willingly.

Surely, that is, Reed knows that he can’t be seen by his constituents as unable or unwilling to enforce such a basic law.

Between the group’s brushing off Congressman John Lewis and taking advantage of Reed’s exceeding patience once already, I can’t imagine that forcing the group to leave would cause Reed nearly as many problems as letting them ignore him.

And if the group’s “leaders” can’t trust the protesters to show up again tomorrow if they have to go home tonight, well, I guess they don’t have much of a movement.

If he does, my hands will be raised…my fingers will be wiggling.

So far, the main crux of these movements is that the public largess should be bestowed upon them. “Pay my mortgage/healthcare/student loans/etc”

When the movement is “Gimme because I perceive that you have given him” rather than “All of this gimme gimme gimme has to stop”, the movement is doomed to fail.

I think the mayor is right on this one. These freaks and geeks are just looking for attention. By ignoring them and refusing to give them the pleasure of being filmed in a fracas with police forcing them from the park, they’ll just lose interest and go home. The OWS protest is about the diminishing middle class.

Most, not all of the protesters I’ve seen interviewed should BE IN CLASS. They have no class, nor are they old enough to be part of a class. Their parents? Maybe.

Many of the older protesters are re-living their radical youth. Parents like that rarely ask much of their children. They usually encourage them to be free spirits or some such nonsense. Free spirits wanting everything given to them freely.

That’s not how real life plays out.

Jim Crowe

The middle class is disappearing in this country as the super rich gobble up more and more of the money.

The protests you see are a result of that.

“Why shouldn’t the American people take half my money from me? I took all of it from them.”

Edward Albert Filene (1869-1937)

Filene (of Boston’s Filene’s Department Stores) founded the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to encourage businesses to contribute to the welfare of their communities. He eventually quit the organization, disappointed that it had become a bastion of right-wing conservatism and an anti-tax lobby.

While such a statement may conveniently fit your preferred narrative, the reality is that the bloated federal government and its operatives (party affiliations notwithstanding) have for decades been failing to properly manage and operate what is supposed to be a limited federal bureaucracy and have instead grown the damn thing into the unmanagebale juggernaut that way too many have come to rely upon for their daily and monthly sustinence.

And with all due respect, which is unknown to me as I do not know you personally, our current president has done a woefully inadequate job at best. I submit he is more interested in throwing gala social events; playing golf; and reading lofty and accusatory missives; all the while, attempting to divert attention from his own shortcomings. He will soon be returned to a community in search of an organizer and our country can get on about the business of improving and prospering.

Keep it up folks. Dismiss this growing discontent at your peril. I felt the ground shake when the GOP overreached in Wisconsin with the Union bust, it shook more when the GOP held us all hostage with the debt ceiling debacle. Now there’s that shaking again.

I will confess that this may just be a flash in the pan BUT if these people become organized it could prove to be a seismic shift in the political landscape. Regular people are getting tired of being fed scraps from the table as our corporate overlords whip their lackeys into hues and cries of “wealth envy” and “class warfare”. It’s worked for an awful long time. But as the “job creators” continue to enjoy their corporate welfare programs without deigning to create jobs, well people begin to see that the emperor has no clothes.

I am personally PRO government, but am against the abuses that some people have chosen to institutionalize in society. The conservatives in the U.S. House of Representatives fought and stood on principle relative to the debt ceiling debacle created as a wedge issue. Somebody has to take stand or we all are at peril of a failed nation. The handouts and nanny-state must be checked and the time is long overdue.

I don’t know how you define “regular people”, but I am a pretty regular mainstream guy and I am not afraid of organized agitation fommented by a loser during a re-election drive. Taranto also has a marvelous essay on the phenomenon, which he calls “The Left’s Nervous Breakdown.” Closes with a clever argument:

“Leading Democratic figures, including party fund-raisers and a top ally of President Obama, are embracing the spread of the anti-Wall Street protests in a clear sign that members of the Democratic establishment see the movement as a way to align disenchanted Americans with their party,” reports the New York Times….

What’s their slogan going to be, “Smash the system–re-elect the president”?

One “senior House Democratic official” tells the Times: “That’s the danger with something like this–that you go from peaceful protests to throwing trash cans.” Throwing trash cans is an unlikely way to effect change, but it’s an even unlikelier way of preserving the status quo.

Besides, this group is fun to watch. They remind me of the barroom scene in the first Star Wars movie.

Great job, Kyle!

Keep this up. Stay on top of the Mayor and these bozos!

Carlosgv:
People protest for a reason, and when the numbers are this large, you know that something is really wrong
THESE people don’t really protest for a reason, at least not one that they give. Ostensibly they are protesting AGAINST greed, but what that really means is anyone’s guess, including theirs–not much of a movement, like Kyle said. When numbers are “this large” for a vocal but confused protest, yes, I agree, something is wrong with these people.

The overwhelming majority of Atlantians support the Occupy Wall Street protesters BULLCRAP!

But we see despite the bullcrap that liberals drone on in the face of all evidence to spite their own noses. … Mayor Reed and all the Democrats should support the protesters. There is a paradigm shift taking place in America right now… The aristocratic rich, elite (1) % and their lap dog Republican politicians have been practicing unregulated class warfare against non rich Americans for the last 30 years …..shave and a haircut. Two bits!

Right, the rich and their lapdog republicans have been doing it, so therefore, it makes sense if we excuse the community organizer in chief and a Canadian firm for conjuring protests on American soil to detract from administration failures, including the economy and corruption, such as fast and furious. When you accuse your enemies of what you are already doing (whether they are doing it or not), you by some twisted Marxist concept of fairness excuse yourself from doing the exact same thing. Castro does this. If you watch his May Day speeches (and if you speak Spanish) then you’ll hear it from a black belt communist.

These children may be aware of what they’re going through with their (worthless, but expensive) college educations, their trust funds or subsidies from their parents, but evidence shows they haven’t an inkling of what is going on in the world, except a) Obama is becoming VERY unpopular, b) the rich getting richer, c) somehow (they don’t know how) they are the ones who are destined to turn all this around.

The children with their hands on the reins of power…sort of like a baby piloting a spacecraft.

Fortunately, Obama fulfills this anaolgy as an older, but still petulent adolescent in charge, who also has no clue about what is good for the country–only that “something” is wrong.

You know what’s wrong, don’t you Mr. Carter? Tell’em Jimmy!

They are frustrated that that “hope and change” thing did not work out as they expected. Excuse from on top- big bad corporations and banks. They should be pushing for passage of the Chinese money devaluation bill that causes jobs to go to China. Mr. Boehner says he isn’t concerned and will mot allow a vote on the Senate bill; the administration isn’t sure what its position is- situation normal- stalemate That’s when it is time to take to the streets.

Camping in State and Federal parks requires a daily fee. The city should charge for the privilege of camping in a public park!

Just a thought – This should be about JOBS, the most important issue in this country! The wealthy or rich are heads of corporations(businesses), they provide and create jobs for people. I doubt any of the protestors have ever created a JOB for anyone. Secondly, was it Buffett or Soros who recently gave 26 million to Africa for humanitary reasons? I am sick and tired of tax payers money going to rebuilt nations like those Muslim countries( they hate us anyway), Mexico, Africa, etc. All these foreign aid monies should be going in the direction of helping American Citizens in obtaining jobs. Business must get tax breaks before they will increase their work force. Put CITIZENS back to work and stop the foreign aid handouts!

Lil’ Barry Bailout – I like your miniker :)

A few of the bully tactics used by individuals abusing their positions within large corporations are as follows:
1. Sending lawyers into UI benefits hearings to fight a VALID claim. I myself have one of these with full proof/evidence! I am nice enough not to name the company here.
2. Forbidding workers from becoming a Notary of the Public, running for political office off the clock, and demanding that workers obey Company Policy OFF the clock for hourly workers.
3. Retaliation against whistle blowers of other, unrelated, companies.
4. Discouraging the disabled from applying to work, suggesting they to go on Disability instead. This can be demoralizing, as I do not want to be stuck getting crumbs from society – I want to make my own success, and be able to take the credit.

I sure wish the sheltered housewife who visited us and wrote about it would realize that each of us are individuals, and because some are like clowns and belittle bottom line security instead of going to the individuals REALLY responsible (instead of a visible symbol of such – security), it does NOT mean that we are all one and the same.

I dress conservative, actually bathe, do smell nice, and can articulate my concerns with INDIVIDUALS looting the System for all it has and spoiling the party for everybody else. I can probably bet that she did not meet the OTHER mother of toddlers visiting who actually HAS hardship (no job, little savings, UI benefits about to expire, expensive car and dental problems, no insurance… small insignificant things like that.) – I am sick of seeing people wonder why people are so angry about the economy while I drive by entire shopping plazas dead because Small Businesses are being slaughtered because customers no longer have the money to spend.

The less educated will not know a mere symbol from the real institution. Instead, they will fight like teenaged girls and go after what appears to be the pretty FACE of the organization, to demoralize the company’s bottom line workers to destroy its FACE based support. People are not stupid – they just aren’t as educated, and they go after what they see. That’s all.
