Reading about terror in Oslo, and remembering a stroller

I remember seeing many things during the fast-paced day I once spent in Oslo: a 12-centuries-old Viking ship; the freaky sculptures at Vigeland Park; the hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year; a can of Coca-Cola priced at the equivalent of $4 at an honest-to-goodness Seven-Eleven.

But the image that keeps returning to my mind today — after hearing that reports that several people were gunned down at an island youth camp, following a bombing near the Norwegian parliament building — is of a stroller.

It was sitting alone outside the entrance to a store in downtown Oslo. And, yes, there was a baby in it. As hard as it is for most Americans to believe, the trust among Norwegians, my wife and I learned, was such that a mother could leave an infant in a stroller outside the store while she shopped.

How shattered that trust must be today.

Apparently, we didn’t take a photo (my wife recalls that the mother exited the store by the time we got the camera out) but there’s a similar image on this blog (nine photos down, as I write this): http://jannelleisstillalive.tumblr.com/

Evil is real. It’s not in our mind. It’s not somehow “our fault”.

My hearts go out to the people of Norway today.

The current picture of the poor woman with her face covered in blood is the one that will be burned in my mind for a while. What on earth prompted this? Not as if terrorist need a reason, they pretty much have decided they’ll attack anything Western. Is it just because of what the article said about them arresting the cleric? This is getting insane. How many countries have to go through their own 9-11 before enough is enough?

Don’t worry Norweigans, all over America, peace loving muslims are gathering to pray for you, collecting money to send, and electing representatives to come over and help clean up and nurse the wounded.

Well, maybe not, but Americans of all other colors and stripes will be praying for you and doing what we can. God Bless Norway.

We may have the EEC, China, and a splintered Middle East and a beleaguered USA finessing back room deals, (do you really doubt it?) but how long before splinter groups who refuse to coalesce are totally antagonized/alienated or just too tempted not to back off this one time?

Of interest though is how most media outlets are already pointing fingers at Islam’s direction, it reeks of too convenient rhetoric, the same type of rhetoric that has us arriving at blood stained footpaths in Oslo this evening. The city of peace makes the irony all too palpable…

I’m saddened to know that in a time where a country is mourning the loss of people in such a tragic way, people here have nothing better to do than leave snide comments or their own political views. What happened to the time where everyone simply banded together in mourning the loss of people, regardless of their race or nationality? Leave the religion and politics out of it, and try to have some compassion for the people who’ve lost their friends, family, and loved ones.

AJC and AP are reporting that it wasnt a muslim terror attack. It was apparently an anti muslim, right wing fanatic. But I love how the conclusions were jumped to.

I think the buttholes (Kennesaw Dave, I Report…) in this comment section are deeply disappointed they couldn’t blame these on Muslims.

A Facebook page matching his name and the photo given out by the police (((((((((((((((((((was set up just a few days ago.)))))))))))))))))))) It listed his religion as Christian, politics as conservative. It said he enjoys hunting, the video games World of Warcraft and Modern Warfare 2, and books including Machiavelli’s “The Prince” and George Orwell’s “1984.”

Yeah, a white wingnut Jesus freak with anti muslim views takes out his frustration on a hundred white kids. Maybe he thought they would all grow up to be little obama bin Ladens?

How much luck do you mouth breathers think Akmed would have had running around setting up bombs and carrying around assault rifles in the sea of white that is Norway?

I’m I the only one who can think?

But if it is your thing to cover up the killings of children on behalf of the latest islamic lunacy, then have at it.

Um, by the way, notice how the panty waist, mealy mouth liberal media never seems to be able to say “muslim terrorist,” even when suspects in custody are muslim, but the big fat front page headlines in this case are “RIGHT WING CHRISTIAN.”

This is so sad. When I was growing up in the 50’s I never heard of such crime. Today all you hear is car jackings, home invasions, kids bringing guns to school and killing fellow classmates. Every morning on the front page all you see is how may people were gunned down or stabbed during the night. It seems there is no respect for human life anymore. The world has gone totally insane.

Ughhh. Here we go again at right wingnuts declaring MeVeigh 2.0 “lone” and “madman”. That’s their M.O. – ALWAYS make the RIGHT WING TERRORIST out to simply be a nutjob…..mentally disturbed individual. Yep, that’s the ticket. I was amazed how conservative radio was all over this by diverting attention to Muslim extremism when it started to look like this was your typical paranoid white wing lunatic who simply grew the balls to do what many of them desire to do, they just don’t want to risk paying the price for doing so.

I lived and worked in Norway for two years. The practice of leaving babies on the street is common, and it’s expected that anyone passing by while the baby is crying will comfort the child. It was really a great place to live except for taxes and cost of living.

Where are all the right wing christians denouncing this man’s terrorism? If they don’t denounce the right wing extremism they are condoning it.

From the Republicans acting as anarchists in our country, seeking to destroy all they can in the sole name of getting rid of our President to this nutcase blowing up parliment and killing children.

This is what we can expect here. How many have been motivated by the right wing blowhards here and have been arrested on murder missions in our own country?

Yet the press is afraid of pointing this out lest those loudest of rabble shout them down as ‘liberal’. Disgusting.

Amid all the hoopla over the actions of the Tim McVeigh chapter of the Oslo Norway branch of their equivalent of the American Tea Party movement, there is some good news that has happened.

To those who after more than forty years, still don’t trust black ants (even though the local varieties don’t bite) and who still shake your shoes and boots out before putting them on ( scorpions and pit vipers), there is belated, but good news. The murdering, flamboyant, ego driven U.S. supported junta leader, and CIA assisted drug trafficker, Nguyen Cao Ky, has died, and if you believe in such things, presumably gone straight to Hell.
