We finally have the birth certificate — I hope no one has to ask “whose birth certificate?” — long form and all.
So, there you have it.
Do I think this will end the debate? No, because conspiracy theorists generally aren’t persuaded by evidence. This was a ridiculous “debate” in the first place, and I expect it to become simply more ridiculous from here on. In fact, I think this may be good politically for President Obama, because the birthers will seem even crazier now.
As for Donald Trump: The potential presidential candidate is claiming the birth-certificate release as a scalp because he was the one who made a (kind of) mainstream issue of it. I disagree. How does it add luster to a candidate to make an issue of something that turns out to be much ado about nothing?

“How does it add luster to a candidate to make an issue of something that turns out to be much ado about nothing?”
In my opinion, this didn’t turn out to be much ado about nothing. It has been much ado about nothing the entire time.
During the 2008 campaign, Obama had shown his birth certificate, independently verified by multiple sources. The same official version that all persons born in Hawaii receive when they request their birth certificate. The same official birth certificate used to get a driver’s license, register to vote, get a passport,…
Hawaii does not release long-form copies. However, to satisfy the media, Obama hired a personal lawyer to ask the State of Hawaii to make an exception and release a long-form copy . An authority within Hawaii’s Board of Health agreed to the exception.
The story isn’t that Obama obtained and provided a long-form version of his birth certificate. The story is that the media allows politicians, pundits, and personalities to go on the air and lie to their viewers.

The State of Hawaii certified his birth certificate decades ago. That should have been the end of the story.
He has had US Passports since he was 4 years old. That should have been the end of the story.
The Supreme Court has refused to hear the case 5 times. That should have been the end of the story.
It was not the end of the story because Obama is the first black president.
And that my friends is the end of the story.

Kyle,
You’re buying into the hype. Obama used his power as President to force the state of Hawaii to manufacture a new birth certificate. Then, they took it to the CIA to make sure that it was aged appropriately. Don’t you understand this is why they announced Panetta is going to head defense at essentially the same time. He played ball with the whole conspiracy but demanded to head the DOD in favor. That socialist is creating a New World Order and we need to fight!!!
Don’t you already know this Kyle?

The argument that it “took too long” for the President of the United States to show his birth certificate is insulting. The fact that people say it took too long implies that the President was hiding something, which we all (hopefully) know is not the case. He didn’t have to show it at all, at no point was his actual legitimacy in danger. Those who question his legitimacy should just be happy he showed it all.
Now you’ll have to find some other form of disguised racism.

Aquagirl: I’ll call your attention to page 8 of the Zogby poll I linked in a comment above. Do you find it equally disturbing that, at the time, nearly half of Democrats polled said they thought Bush either consciously let 9/11 happen or actively made it happen?
Or do you think that, as my colleague Jay Bookman has suggested in the past, that the responses to poll questions about Obama’s birth certificate (I would also put the 9/11 truther issue in this category) reflect mere tribal loyalty?

Well said, Ragnar.
I also think that perhaps this little slip of paper has been sitting in President Obama’s desk for a while, to pull out at the opportune moment. Why not? He knew, and his advisors knew, there was not a snowball’s chance in hell of being able to turn around the economy quickly, and it might even get worse. This is a PR stunt, and if any kudos are to be given to Trump, it would just be that he sped up the release. But President Obama may have played his “immunity idol” a bit early, he may wish he had it at the next round.

I want to see if one—just ONE—of these people will admit “gee, I was wrong, I let fringe elements whip me into a frenzy over a complete non-issue.” I’m betting not one of them will do it. It’s a sign you’ve surpassed an adolescent in emotional maturity.
So no, I don’t care to drop the topic of the day and jump to whatever you think you need “proof” for. I don’t care what you think about obamacare, or TARP, or your issues with not getting a date to the senior prom. Donald Trump shows his ignorance each time he opens his mouth trying to bring down our president. As a nation, we should be ashamed to ask a president to present his birth certificate. This is pure racism; if Mc Cain had been elected and made some of the same decisions as President Obama, the Republicans would not have blinked an eye. Rather, they would be patting him on the back. Wake up, people: we have a Black president. Get used to it and support him. George Bush left behind a mess that will take many years to alter.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, okay. Now the former birthers are gonna say that Obama was just playing politics and waiting for the “opportune” moment to release it.
How does it get so easy to ignore the facts?
Nevermind the fact that Obama had to ask the state of Hawaii for an exception to their law, and to release his birth certificate. Why didn’t he just release his own personal copy, you ask. Well, dead behind the eyes, that’s because had he released his own personal copy, then this board would have been full of people saying “ahh he just printed one up, it’s so easy to photoshop those things.”
He released an official copy that is certified by the state of Hawaii, and this just happens to be the date it was released. It was inevitable that the day he released it, someone was going to say, “typical Obama, he had to release it today.”
End. Of. Story.

John,
I was never a birther. They are stupid, and I never understood the fuss. His mama was American, so is he. No other way around it.
That said, as easy as it was for him to produce it today, quite convenient timing. He could have gotten wheels rolling a lot faster. Why didn’t he? Hmm, well maybe because Hillary was not a threat. Nor was McCain. But now, with him in presidency, and economic disaster threats hanging over his head (not all his fault, but there nonetheless), and the issue is moot now that he is already POTUS, why now? Sorry, but I believe him and his cronies to be politically savvy, and I am merely ASKING (not charging him, I just am suspicious of ALL politicians) if perhaps this is just timed well so as to deflect concerns about rising gas prices or another unpopular war? Maybe he hopes to have solutions to those two problems, and this is just a way to keep the media off his back for a short time.

Kyle, I do think, like with the 9/11 troofers, it’s a tribal thing. I wish there had been a more accurate division between people who really thought Obama knew he was born in Kenya, and people who were just asking why Obama didn’t release his birth certificate to put an end to the whole discussion. Some folks think it’s a matter of openness, and I think those people are a far cry from the true birthers.
I think trying to draw parallels between the 9/11 believers and birthers is a place you DON’T want to go. Because it shows how friggin’ close Republicans are to the edge of the cliff.
First, whether Obama was born in Hawaii or not is a pretty straightforward question. It’s not like global warming, or the events of 9/11. It’s a pretty much up-and-down question. There’s no complexity. Trying to decide if President Bush “let” 9/11 happen is not provable by a simple certificate. (For the record, I don’t believe he did, I’m saying that the proof he didn’t would be more complex.) Even before today, Obama had released a certificate authenticated by numerous sources, including Hawaii state officials. You can tell a true conspiracy theorist by their resistance to evidence and proof. Birthers have been doing backflips to get away from the evidence. That’s a clear sign of crazy.
But the clear difference between 9/11 nuts and birther nuts is DEMOCRATS DON’T LET THE CRAZIES DRIVE THE BUS. What leading Democrats endorsed, or tip-toed around the 9/11 nuts? Do you recall Nancy Pelosi saying “well, I’d like to think the President was unaware of 9/11, but there are certain questions by certain people….?” Did she say there were explosives in the WTC? Did any leading Democrat? The only one who comes to mind is Cynthia McKinney. Crazy Democrats of the 4th may have re-elected her, but the House leadership didn’t give her seniority back. She was not re-appointed to her committees, which is pretty much tradition.
No, the Democratic leadership treated McKinney like she deserved to be treated: a babbling, irrational, cop-slapping nutcase.
Now you have MAJOR Republicans who engaged in this silly birther junk. Gingrich calling Obama a “Kenyan.” Sheesh. Can you imagine if 90 or so Georgia General Assembly Democrats had signed a bill demanding proof Bush was not behind 9/11? Birther beliefs are not fringe among elected Republicans.
A large part of America is shockingly illogical and just plain mean-spirited. But the Republicans–with their global warming denialism, creationist junk, and now birtherism, are WAY ahead of progressives, or libs, or Democrats, or whatever you want to call them. They love their nutty thinking and the assumption the other guy is evil and not to be trusted under any circumstances. They embrace their supposed moral superiority, with their blather about family values and anti-abortion rhetoric.
The last time we got into that sort of “I’m good, they’re EVIL” mode, it resulted in the Civil War.
If our political leaders don’t show more wisdom than they did in the 1850’s, it’ll be just as bad. Seriously. This dabbling in birther and denialist crap has infiltrated the highest levels of the Republicans. They need to knock it off, now.

Obama didn’t need to do anything, The crazier the birthers got – the more they were tied to the GOP at large. Why do anything that will prevent your opponents from looking crazy?
So I am not sure why he released it now. Maybe he wanted to finish off Trump, take folks off high gas prices for a few days, who knows. Maybe this creates a divide – you either stop being a birther, or you continue with the illusion. Will be easy to tell now.
But I do agree with some that say a lot of Dems thought Bush was involved in 9/11. That conspiracy theory is really more appaling than the birther stuff.

So ok, Kyle, we’ll play your game for a moment. Is Boehner a leader? Is Cantor? Both have used the coded phrase “I take Obama at his word that he’s an American.” Does that ring a bell? Cling to your imaginary shreds of dignity if it makes you feel better. But like I said, for the sake of your children and the entire country, stay the h3ll away from the voting booth. And while you’d never admit that out loud, much less on a blog, you know it’s true. Angry, fearful people are great targets for manipulation. At least cut the damn strings.

President Obama made this an issue for political gain. Why is the POTUS wasting time on this? For him to try to turn this into political gain says something about him, and it’s not positive. If the Clinton machine couldn’t disprove his American citizenship, then there is no need to believe otherwise.
President Obama got to where he is because he thinks you’re stupid. He learned his lessons from Saul Alinsky well. If you believe he sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for twenty years and heard nothing, then read his books.

The term “race card” was created in an attempt to trivialize the elephant in the room that every person in America knows exists. That’s why the term is used when someone points out the elephant but others wish to ignore it.

For once, I agree with you Kyle…the madness won’t stop. While taking credit for forcing it’s release, Donald Trump says he won’t believe it until he examines it and verifies it’s authenticity. This is the same man who recently said he hired an investigative team who proved Obama was not born in the US. Wonder if he had a money back guarantee. This is also the same man who basically claimed he’s financially worth whatever he says he’s worth. Of course, this is the same man who is polling number 1 among the list of possible GOP presidential hopefuls.

Tech Man, I don’t think it’s the shrinking budgets so much as the 24/7 news and the “let the viewer decide” approach, all combined with the University of Google syndrome. People really think they can do a couple of internet searches and suddenly, they know it all. And if some “so-called expert” disagrees, well, they’re part of the conspiracy.

LOL…the Dems don’t want to “lower the deficit” at all. Otherwise, they would cut spending. They have zero desire to do so…they just want to raise the debt limit to tack on another trillion to our existing debt and spend us into oblivion. In order to serious about lowering the deficit, you cannot have ObamaCare in the same sentence. Fiscally, it will not work, it is not possible. Why Dems don’t get more upset at the thought of us going into bankruptcy blows my mind. If that happens, you won’t be able to get healthcare, or gasoline, or groceries cause our currency will be worthless. Wake up you big dummies!! We all pay enough taxes already, we need to cut 25% across the board just to survive and preserve our way of life. The only one who has said anything to date who realizes this is Ron Paul. I laughed at him 4 years ago, but would support him based solely on his support of cutting everything possible, including our military, foreign aid, etc.

Not one single person on the blog has even mentioned what the issue is. None of the lefties know what they are talking about. Obama’s citizenship is NOT the issue. Let me explain it to you, using an example.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former governor of California, is obviously a citizen of the United States. He could be a US Senator, but he could NEVER be President of the US.
According to the US Constitution, the president, in addition to being a citizen, must be a natural-born citizen. That refers to the time of his birth.
The Constitution is vague so we look to the US Code for clarification.
http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_citi.html
Had Obama NOT been born in the US, he still could have qualified to be President, if he met the requirements.
Everyone has their own agenda in deciding who to vote for. Making certain that a man or woman meets the minimum requirements as required by the Constitution should be important to every voter. It should have been equally important to Obama to be forthcoming & “transparent, as he promised.

Why on Earth would anyone request their long form and wait 15 weeks or more to receive it makes no sense when the short version is legal and serves the same purpose? If you needed a Passport within 30 days and didn’t have your birth certificate, you’d request the short form not the long. Makes sense doesn’t it.

You are all over the place, aren’t you? I will make it simple, and your sarcasm doesen’t change one thing. You are a “birther”.
Now that you and your loony right buddies have egg all over your faces, you are spinning your story differently.
Please, move on!

I agree on 24/7 news/opinion pushing ridiculous stories to fill time.
That being said it’s a shame Obama is forced to react to Trump rather than the news media.
That is akin to the Mayor of Atlanta having to respond to NeNe and Sharie rather than AJC.

Tech man, grow some. I understand the Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Back-Pedaling today. But don’t pull a Palin. Don’t mutter and posit your coy little “isn’t it strange he won’t show the long form?” snipes for years, and then claim you’re not involved, of course you knew all along it wasn’t an issue, and why is Obama trying to distract us from the important stuff anyway?
If you thought Obama needed to show further proof, and someone should have been investigating, own up to your birtherism. Be proud.
BTW, I go potty mouth on people who say “Some of my best friends are black, BUT….” Likewise for guys like you who say “I’m not a birther, BUT….”
Contemptible weak-kneed people shouldn’t expect floral speeches. Deal with it.

Linda, Obama didn’t come forward sooner because no other candidate in history that I’m aware of in the U.S. ever had to produce a birth certificate. And, given that there wasn’t a shred of evidence that he was not born in the U.S. The WH knows this is all racially driven. Let the crazy right-wingers rant a few years then look incredibly stupid.
Vann Jones got booted too didn’t he?
From the 911Truther idiots I’ve seen in documentaries, etc., I haven’t seen any liberals, but rather crank libertarian types. Of course, C. McKinney was a crazy member.

Aquagirl@6:17, Apparently you did not read what I wrote. Hillary Clinton started the birther rumor. I was never a birther, assuming if there was anything to it, that Hillary & Bill would have gotten to the bottom of it. I bet they are laughing their heads off today.
I don’t know if it was Trump or the polls that finally forced Obama to prove himself today. According to a recent USA Today poll, only 38% of Americans believed that Obama was definitely born in the US. By Obama not being transparent, as he promised for 3 yrs., he let this rumor fester & boil. The other 62% of Americans MUST have included tons of Democrats & Independents who voted for Obama.
As for Van Jones, your interpretation of his apology was different from mine.
I didn’t sign the 9/11 petition because I disagreed with it, but I have no reason to question the 9/11 org.’s responsibility, ability or methods to authenticate their petition. I do question Van Jones’ denial of his signing a 2004 petition 5 years later in 2009.
I will say the same thing to you that I have said to numerous liberals, whose strategy is to slander conservatives. I am not, nor will not be intimidated by your & your kind. As a matter of fact, you & yours embolden the right & the conservatives. Just keep it up. We know your tactics & if you were really as smart as you think you are, you would realize that they did not work in 2010, are not working in 2011 & will not work in 2012.
Evidently, you & Sarah Palin agree that fighting “like a girl” is a winning strategy. I prefer to fight like a lady. I hope that you will eventually acquire a little decency, understand the difference between girls/women & ladies & clean up your mouth.

Hillary & Bill are laughing their heads off tonight.
Do you really think Obama was so intimidated by Trump & the birthers, whoever they are, that he produced his papers today, after 3 yrs. of requests?
He finally requested & produced them because only 38% of the American people believed he was born in the US, according a recent poll in USA Today. Are the other 62% “loony right buddies” that have “egg all over” their “faces?”

Well, the President’s release of his long form birth certificate today has resulted in some pretty lively conversation — with the BS and “opinions presented as facts” pretty high on both sides. Just for the record, I consider myself a moderate “mainstrean Republican” (a centrist Pub leaning right – where many experts say the majority of Americans are now hanging out politically these days — with libs and looney libs at about 20% of the electorate — but they control he media and they are very vocal and clearly enlightened and smarter than every one else – just ask them, they’ll tell you), and neither I, nor numerous other Pubs I know ever bought into the Birther nonsense. Obviously, some poor misguided Pub souls did. Trump, a very smart guy, used it to get attention and to promote himself (an art that he has more than perfected). And, who knows if he ever really believed it at all? There’s a good possibility he is laughing up his sleeve right now, because the strategy obviously worked, and now he takes the credit for forcing the big revelation. His name has only been mentioned (good, bad, or ugly) about a thousand times in these posts. If he actually does believe it – a possibility – then he is clearly not as smart as I thought. Boehner is the big disapointment to me. Cantor came right out when asked point blank, and said it was nonsense, and Boehner punted — Of course, he tells people what to think every day, that’s a big part of his job — again, a big disappointment. I hated this stupid Birther nonsense primarily because it gave the Dems and libs a plausible rationale to play the race card — the card they live to play anyway, and especially when their intellectual arguments aren’t working or winning in the market place of ideas. And how they love to play it (these posts are chock full of it), blissfully ingoring the fact that without almost 50% of the white vote, Obama never would have been elected President in the first place. Yes, “racist” the magic word that ends every reasoned, logical, and intellectual argument you may be in the midst of losing a the moment. “Well, uh, uumm, I mean, well, uhh, gosh, uhh, ummm . . . well, that just proves your a racist.” End of discussion. No doubt there were those Birthers who had racist motivations and attitudes. No reasonable person would deny that fact. But, I think the “facts” as stated by all of these arm chair political experts and pundits in these posts, that the Birthers just took over the party leadership and over ran the entire Republican party, so the Pubs are all crazy and should not vote in the next election, etc. (wishful thinking by the 20% noted above) might be just a “slight” exaggeration. I saw that some Fox News hating Dem/lib “expert” on a post for Wingfield’s, or maybe Bookman’s column, who clearly never watches Fox News, demanded an apology from the network over the Birther issue. Obviously, he did not know that O’Reilly (and Fox News as an organization) has been saying for months that Obama was born in Hawaii and the Birther issue was nonsense. Facts can just be so inconvenient.

Bill@7:08, “…no other candidate is history…in the US ever had to produce a birth certificate” might or might not be accurate. Why not DEMAND proof of credentials for all offices?
I’ve always submitted a copy of my resume for jobs to clients, without being asked. Even though Obama’s resume was deficient, I would have thought he would have gladly submitted his basic qualifications for the presidency of the US 3 yrs. ago.
Since the recent polls (USA Today) indicate that only 38% of Americans believe that Obama was born in the US, do you believe that the other 62% of Americans are racists?
Hillary Clinton started the rumor. Sorry you think she is racist.
Perhaps you need to refresh your memory of the 9/11 truthers. I’ve already cited a site above. Signers included Code Pink founders Medea Benjamin & Jodi Evans.

He won in a landslide over the favored white, republican candidate. Most of the good little southern republicans have never accepted that fact- and it is a fact. There apparently is nothing that he can do or say that they will agree with. But then of course there is no racism there- right?

It took over two years to make certain they paid off the appropriate people, the fact that you declare anyone who disagrees as “mad” just makes it more and more like the “Big Lie”.
For those who unfamiliar – that was lies so insane put forth for the political agenda of hitler and his supporters that were too over the top to believe …. two years for the richest and most powerful people in the world to produce a birth certificate?
Now someone needs to look into how many people in hawaii disappeared since then AND the bank accounts of those still in power.
So much less about madness than being willing to be swept up into believing anything the media declares as truth rather than what they offer for your consideration as possible truth.
Articles with titles that provide you with an assumption before your browse some data ought always to be questioned.

We are not an autocratic society where the “powers that be” dictate what we should think. We are a democratic society where you can express what you feel. Which also means we can choose whomever we want to listen to but when we are so myopic in our views listening to only those who look like us and never allowing ourselves a different viewpoint – it’s bigotry. Whites like Trump choose to believe that Mr. Obama’s Presidency is somehow not legitimate and what drives these notions is racism. What else can it be?

@captguitarman …….Its sad that you had to type a darn essay to get your point across.(A misguided point at that!) Just because someone voted for Pres. Obama, does not mean that you can not be a racist or at best take racist actions or have bigoted opinions. Its very foolish and ignorant for you to assume its not possible. For you to type so much ans say so little is really sad. If race is not a factor then why is threats against the President Obama gone up 400% versus the most unpopular President in American history?(I’m talking about Bush if you are too stupid to get the point). Why was he basically forced to show his BC to the American public(which has never been done before in American history) even after knowing he had to be vetted by the CIA before he could he could even run for President? Just because O’reilly stated that he believed Pres Obama was born here does not mean that Fox News did not play into the issue as much as possible. I watched everyday as they allowed the speculation to continue without offering any of the evidence they had to the contrary. Now you try to disassociate yourself from the radical foolish Republicans when it suits you. Now they will either try and discredit the BC or they will find another issue to attach his legitimacy. Hilary Clinton used what she could to try and win an election, it does not make her a racist and it does not mean she is not one either(I don’t believe she is a racist). As much as you say black/libs play the race card, true racism is squashed just as much. For you to not acknowledge the true depth of racism in the country truly shows that you have either yet to grow up or you are just plain dumb.
