Some liberal groups are finally acknowledging the obvious: Hardly anyone believed their claims that ObamaCare would “bend the cost curve downward” and help balance the federal budget.
The public rejection of the claims may not be news, but the left’s acknowledgment of this defeat does qualify as a scoop — and Politico’s Ben Smith is the one who got it:
Key White House allies are dramatically shifting their attempts to defend health care legislation, abandoning claims that it will reduce costs and the deficit and instead stressing a promise to “improve it.”
The messaging shift was circulated this afternoon on a conference call and PowerPoint presentation organized by Families USA — one of the central groups in the push for the initial legislation. The call was led by a staffer for the Herndon Alliance, which includes leading labor groups and other health care allies. It was based on polling from three top Democratic pollsters, John Anzalone, Celinda Lake and Stan Greenberg
The confidential presentation, available in full here and provided to POLITICO by a source on the call, suggests that Democrats are acknowledging the failure of their predictions that the health care legislation would grow more popular after its passage, as its benefits became clear and rhetoric cooled. Instead, the presentation is designed to win over a skeptical public and to defend the legislation — and in particular the individual mandate — from a push for repeal.
The presentation concedes that groups typically supportive of Democratic causes — people under 40, non-college-educated women and Hispanic voters — have not been won over by the plan. Indeed, it stresses repeatedly, many are unaware that the legislation has passed, an astonishing shortcoming in the White House’s all-out communications effort.
“Straightforward ‘policy’ defenses fail to [move] voters’ opinions about the law,” reads one slide. “Women in particular are concerned that health care law will mean less provider availability — scarcity an issue.”
The presentation also concedes that the fiscal and economic arguments that were the White House’s first and most aggressive sales pitch have essentially failed.
“Many don’t believe health care reform will help the economy,” reads another slide.
The presentation’s final page of “Don’ts” counsels against claiming “the law will reduce costs and [the] deficit.”
So, what do the pollsters and advisers recommend? That Democrats and their fellow travelers focus instead on personal stories like greedy doctors who needlessly remove kids’ tonsils — er, I mean, greedy doctors who amputate diabetics’ feet instead of telling them to modify their diets — er, I mean, well, Smith reports the advice here:
“People can be moved from initial skepticism and support for repeal of the law to favorable feelings and resisting repeal,” it says. “Use personal stories — coupled with clear, simple descriptions of how the law benefits people at the individual level — to convey critical benefits of reform.”
And, finally, they recommend telling the public that the law may not be that great, but don’t worry — the great ObamaCare debate of 2009-10 was just a prelude to our efforts to truly fix health care:
“Keep claims small and credible; don’t overpromise or ’spin’ what the law delivers,” it says, suggesting supporters say, “The law is not perfect, but it does good things and helps many people. Now we’ll work to improve it.”
How about this for a tagline: “We had to pass the bill so that we could find out what needed fixing in it.”

It was never about what was in the bill, it was about getting something – anything – on the books while they could cram it through.

Way before the bill passed SNL had a skit showing Biden with a stack of paper saying something like, we don’t even care if all the pages are blank just as long as the cover said health care reform.

Ain’t it great that you make 90k a year and don’t qualify for subsidies, but don’t you worry, maybe you can convince your neighbor who makes 88k to share the boat he is going to buy with the subsidy money you are giving him.

I would agree with that. I don’t think this bill pleased anybody but the insurance companies, as they will reap the benefits. “Everybody” will have to be covered now, so they can raise the rates on everybody but in reality, people who couldn’t afford coverage before, still won’t be able to afford it. Oh, they’ll have a program to pay for those at the bottom of the economic sector but there will be many who make too much to qualify but not enough to afford coverage. They’ll get caught in the squeeze like they always do. The real problem is health care costs and this does nothing to address that.
So my prediction (as it has been all along) is that nothing much will change and in the next year or two we’ll be reading about record insurance company profits. They played the system like a cheap violin, pretending they were against it, knowing all along how much they would benefit from it.
If Obama really believed in this, instead of handing it off to Pelosi and Reid, he should have submitted his own gill and taken to the bully pulpit to convince America, why his bill was the way to go. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too and wound up with a stale twinkie.

Its much easier to make Frankenstein look pretty (not to mention useful) if you at least have a Frankenstein to work with. “Starting from scratch” was how Frankenstein was created in the first place. Even Frankenstein is better than the 10 Draculas and 20 Wolfmen we had before.
I too would prefer a “Medicare for all” plan over what we have. It will be the next step, someday.

Republicans Block Bill to Aid Small BusinessBy DAVID M. HERSZENHORN
WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Thursday rejected a bill to aid small businesses with expanded loan programs and tax breaks, in a procedural blockade that underscored how fiercely determined the party’s leaders are to deny Democrats any further legislative accomplishments ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The measure, championed by Senator Mary L. Landrieu, Democrat of Louisiana, had the backing of some of the Republican Party’s most reliable business allies, including the United States Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business. Several Republican lawmakers also helped write it.
But Republican leaders filibustered after fighting for days with Democrats over the number of amendments they would be able to offer. A last-ditch offer by Democrats to allow three was refused by the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

It’s got plenty of substance. Much of it is like substance you scrape off your shoes, but substance nonetheless. There’s part of it that makes every business in the country file a 1099 for any company they did more than $600.00 worth of business in a year and because they claimed that the provision would net them x number of billions from tax cheating they can’t change it without coming up with this entirely made up number of dollars.

“The confidential presentation, available in full here and provided to POLITICO by a source on the call, suggests that Democrats are acknowledging the failure of their predictions that the health care legislation would grow more popular after its passage,…”
No, the presentation doesn’t suggest anything of the sort.
The premise of this article (and Kyle’s post) is, not surprisingly, entirely false. If the folks as Politico (or Kyle) would do a little research, they’d find plenty of independent research showing that health care legislation has become more popular since its passage. The plurality of voters, if not the majority, don’t want to see it repealed, do want to give more of its benefits a chance to kick in, and do want to build on it. (As evidence, observe that Republican politicians are running on hating minorities again and are no longer running on repealing the Affordable Care Act.)
It should also be pointed out, that despite Kyle’s spin, there’s nothing in this presentation that says the the Affordable Care Act “may not be great”, “needed fixing”, or anything to that effect. It does claim that the legislation isn’t perfect, but seeking to build on good legislation isn’t the same as fixing bad legislation.
In addition, with regard to focus group testing, Kyle likes to pretend that Newt Gingrich’s word list never existed (Gingrich still refers to it often), that GOP pollster and messaging coordinator Frank “call it a bailout” Luntz was never born, and that Republicans don’t do focus group testing (in truth, that’s about the only thing they do). Unfortunately for him, pretending doesn’t make it so.
I suggest that readers actually click on the link and view the slide show. It’s actually relatively benign and, for those who aren’t familiar with the legislation, informative.

Sister Cynthia DID impress me when she took my phone calls in reference to the Romany issue…she lost me when she set out to defend first, many, many moons ago the scurrilous and clasically racist column by Colin Campbell on the funeral of a Roma notable (I still use it in my cultural sensitivity workshops) and later when she defended the use of the term as “okay” when spelled with a lower case “g” and referring to such things as “gypsy” cabs…the AJC has since corrected its error and no longer uses the term, but it took DECADES to get them to see the point…there was a similar situation in reference to the AJC “challenge” of awarding minority contracts to “blonde, blue-eyed” Cherokee…something that was of significance in this household where we have a red-haired one who would not pass the AJC’s editorial Strassbourg test of racial purity…

Yea, this kind of reminds me of the time when the argument was put forth by the Bushies that the war in Iraq would pay for itself …. almost a Trillion $$$$ later we are still paying for it (but finally getting out of that rat hole). Also like that Medicare prescription drug program, only supposed to cost $144 billion …. one half Trillion $$$$ later we’re still paying for it. Also reminds me about how those Bush tax cuts were eventually going to trickle down and the deficit would be cut in half. 5 Trillion $$$$ later (On top of the $5 Trillion deficit already accumulated)and still paying for it.
I don’t think Obama and the Dems have the corner on bending the “truth”. Seems like there are no innocent bystanders be they either Republican or Democrat. So, Kyle, your side is no better than the other side when it comes to “bending the truth” (lies maybe). It just comes down to whose lies do we want to believe.

I agree with you entirely on the attack mode…my reason for not being the biggest fan of CT’s is that it took so long to get her to see the point which, in my opinion, should have been obvious spot on…I say she’s limited in that she sees this through a “black-white” prism and doesn’t readily grasp that it doesn’t matter the “group” we ALL have to be aware of our own falling into the same trap, even when we have no personal connection to or experience with “those people” whoever “those people” are.
And, yes, it is that “common bond” where I come to disagreement with her…if you can see it in your own case, why can you not see it in others?
And thanks for the positive thoughts about teachers…as I say (outside the pc fora!). teaching is like medicine, the ministry and other “public service” so-called professions…it’s a “calling” and you either have it or you don’t…

That “THEY” are promising to improve it is hilarious! These guys live in a childlike world of magical “do-overs” and “mulligans”. The great irony of all this is kook central in the Congress, hosted by Nancy Pelosi, who said (and I paraphrase): we’ll know what’s in the bill AFTER we pass it.
Now that we’re finding out, the Dems are promising to “change it.” History shows that they won’t read that bill before they pass it either!
What’s amazing is the complicit cover that the majority of the press supplies to the Democrats amidst their obvious bumbling, abrasive politics and awful fecklessness. Every day, the President looks more and more like the boob he is. Thanks for being one of a couple of lights at the ajc!

LIsten, I’ve voted for Republicans most of my adult life, but Obamacare is the result of GOP failures. If the Republicans I helped elect had done their jobs correctly, had walked the talk when they had the power, they wouldn’t have gotten the boot in 2008. But they didn’t. They grew government just like the Democrats. They got us in two wars and had no intention of ending either of them. They trampled the Constitution in favor of some perceived security. And as for health care, they ignored it.
You can gripe about what the Democrats have done with Obamacare all you want, but at least they’re looking at the problem. We pay 50% more in health care costs (as a product of GDP) than the countries with the best health care in the world and we get much poorer results. We deserve better than that.

On prepositions and baseball players:
A while back Bob Costas was interviewing some former umpires on MLB Network. I can’t remember his name but one umpire told of this humorous conversation between himself, as home plate umpire, and Lou Pinella as batter. (From memory, may not be word for word)
Umpire: Strike
Lou: What?
Umpire: It was a strike
Lou: No, it wasn’t
Umpire: Well it looked like a strike to me.
Lou: So, if it was a strike, where was the pitch at?
Umpire: Lou, you know you aren’t supposed to end a sentence with a preposition.
(Lou looks puzzled steps into batter’s box)
Lou: Time out?
Umpire: Time
(Lou steps out of batters box)
Lou: So where was the pitch at, a$$hole?

Lou hasn’t really had any meltdowns in the last couple years; he’s mellowed I guess. Lou’s contract is up at the end of this year so it’s no surprise that he’s announced his retirement. The last 3 or 4 years, Ryne Sandberg, has been working his way up through the Cubs farm system as a Manager. He’s at AAA Iowa this year and the odds on favorite to get the job in Chicago next year. He’s done pretty well and I think it speaks well of a Hall of Famer, that he was willing to go back to the Minors and ride the buses, rather than just step into a Big League job.
Tyrelle Harris, who was part of the D Lee trade yesterday, pitched 2 scoreless innings tonight in his debut with the AA Tennessee Smokies.

Kyle is able to take any source to smear Obama. This was not an official government site but a group who wants to move further in reforming the health care system, as I do. Kyle regularly avoids the discussion of an issue in favor of discussions of the process. He does not understand the issue well enough to discuss the merits so he becomes a flak for the right wing. The government can’t provide ‘free’ health care to anyone because the government is not a producer- it does not create wealth. The government can only redistribute wealth through its ability to tax its citizens.Call it what you will, but any time one individual is taxed and another is not, yet benefit equally e.g. equal military protection/equal access to transportation infrastructure/etc. , the individual paying taxes has effectively had their wealth redistributed unjustly.

I frankly don’t have much of a problem with any of them, since it mostly depends on the context in which they are used ( though I am still trying to think of a context for “white trash” that is not meant to be demeaning- perhaps “That pile of discarded paper napkins, eggshells and marshmellows is white trash”?).

This healthcare law is so bad that it will be defunded once Republicans achieve their gains in November, and the Blue Dogs will be there to help.
The battle was lost once Baucus didn’t allow either single-payer or a Medicare buy-in to make it to the committee. Thereafter, it became a feast for the insurance companies. The rest of us will be stuck with higher and higher health insurance premiums to pay for it. The insurance companies aren’t going to swallow a huge loss. And worse, the law does absolutely nothing to control healthcare costs.
And I don’t much care if it goes down. Better no law than a bad law.

Obama’s Point of No Return
There comes a moment in a failing presidency where the incumbent, through some single gesture, action, or statement, crosses a certain line from beyond which there is no return. Through his own will and behavior, he so underlines his failings, so frames his negative image, that no further action can ever erase it. Fate, accident, and circumstance have nothing to do with it. It is the president himself who puts the period at the end of his own sentence.

Okay, I’ll give it a shot here. Bear in mind I’m posting from “the sick bed,” so I’m not up to snuff. First, to uppity. Yiddish has a great word for much the same, chutzpah, but it still misses somewhat in application to the English view of the similar attitude. Uppity is when a person refuses to accept the stereotypical “place” assigned and makes a point of it, generally successfully. Thus, when somebody calls me an “uppity” Southerner, Jew, gay or what have you, if done with negative connotations, they are acknowledging that I have defied the conventional image and have the chutzpah to establish my equality in so doing.
White trash is not quite so easily defined in cultural context. For many outlanders, it is automatically decoded as being “po white trash.” When Bette Middler termed her early act as “trash with flash” she caught the essence. Trash is, like uppity, less an attitude than a lifestyle and every group, regardless of socio-economic status, produces its share. White trash is just the racial identity of said individual. As a positive reference, the great little series “White Trash Cookbook” gives an insight. Come to my house today and given the general disorder due to me not feeling up to clearing the table, the dirty clothes thrown about, me still laying about half-dressed, hair not combed, unshaven etc and I would welcome you “to white trash heaven…”
Now “Gypsy” is a completely different matter. It is the pejorative name applied to the Romany people as an antipathetic term of segregation. It’s use as an adjective has been too often in reference to illegal, criminal or shady behavior/practices associated with the Romany and, even at its less negative, as a quasi-romantic view of the Romany as a vagrant, wandering and anti-social class of people. I go near apoplectic as you say for one reason…the continued use of the term in the media and among supposedly sensitive people over the objections of many Roma speaks to how little the greater society knows or cares about the fragile status of the Romany people around the world. Recent events in France are but one example. They are regularly attacked and hounded out of towns, their children denied schooling, and the list could go on and on… The first step in correcting our social mistrust of and discrimination against them is to understand them better and that starts by calling them what they call themselves…

josef, out of my league a tad here, but the term “white trash” has *for me* been more about a mentality, more than a socio-economic status. Yes, visions of trailer parks come to mind, but the term is also in the purview of the nouveau riche as well. Trash is trash, no matter if they make $25K a year or $25M a year.
And interestingly, it is often used, especially by blacks, as a slur, but also by whites of higher socio-economic status to jokingly describe their origins.
From wiki: In 1854, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the chapter “Poor White Trash” in her book A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Stowe tells the reader that slavery not only produces “degraded, miserable slaves”, but also poor whites who are even more degraded and miserable. The plantation system forced those whites to struggle for subsistence. Beyond economic factors, Stowe traces this class to the shortage of schools and churches in their community, and says that both blacks and whites in the area look down on these “poor white trash”.
So to my way of thinking, just as you can take the boy out of the country, but…, you can take the trash out of the trailer park, but…

I’ve mentioned it before on another blog, but since the topic is here, I’ll chime in the fact that I am no fan of this new health care bill simply because it is not single payer. In my opinion, that is the only way to actually control costs. I give the Dems in Congress and the POTUS a big F- on this. They caved and bought into the insurance companies. In my opinion, the insurance companies are the problem concerning costs — they represent a removal from the free market system of allowing customers and suppliers to directly set the price of services. They do nothing in regards to direct care, but are a large percentage of the price incurred for services. Several industries have had to re-invent themselves due to ever changing and new technology and I dont’ see why health insurance companies can not do the same. Single payer all the way– until then, nothing will change except the increase in our premiums.

We all…as individuals, have our biases and prejudices…..but the key that many here fail to note is that those that have the POWER to exert their racism do it as frequently as possible; those that do NOT have the power can only talk about it!! The real talking points should be about costs. Insurance premiums are not being sent out with increases in their costs. The silent tax that is coming is that everyone will have to pay tax on the amount that your employer pays for you for your health insurance as this now becomes income to you. Benefits for you as an individual will not come until 2014, but many other costs are coming immediately to your door steps. They unanimously voted to have dinner at Kroger’s. They each selected their preferences of cans of beans & Vienna sausage. The Kroger deli was kind enough to let them use the can opener & some spoons. I thought they might enjoy attending the Braves game but they insisted on going to a wrestling match. On the way to the arena, I noticed they limited their comments to one sentence at a time, just like they do on the blogs. The sign out front indicated that Chris Benoit would be on the mat against Savage Love. I mentioned that Benoit killed himself (along with his wife & son). They denied that the story was true because MSNBC had not reported it. They agreed that it’s only common sense that if it’s not on MSNBC, “it ain’t true.” Anyway, we watched a fake wrestler participating in a fake sport & they enjoyed every minute. I was unable to get my limo deposit back. There was too much evidence of man-made global warming in the back seat.

“Now you’ve done it. Back to the old song & dance. BUSHWHACKED huh? Bush pulled this country together after one of the historical tragedies to hit our nation.. He brought Americans to their feet and defied those who would kill thousands of unprotected American civilians on one sad day…..”
Economically….the Bush years were NOT the best times for Americans; I know of too many people who lost economic ground (I, for one!)….THAT’S my focus! Bush took two wars and put the spending off the books…and sent the nation down economically! If that’s not Bushwhacked….please elaborate!!
“Maybe you such drop your brain washing and pay attention to real facts. ” I have…TARP, bailouts, economic downfall: all are attributed to the BUSH years! Where was the level of outrage over the deficit and risin unemployment…and the bailouts when Bush was in the White House?? The silence then was deafening!!
The GOP had 8 years to get healthcare straight…and did nothing; the GOP had 20 years to take care of the border…..nothing happened!! Obama’s ICE has deported more than Bush did…..and has made the attempt to work on health care….and the war spending is ON THE BOOKS..so we do know how much we’re spending!!
Not brain-washed…..just not buying all that the Bushies claim!! Also think about this: 1) Who funded the mujahaddin in Afghanistan in the 80s to fight the Russians…..and now, those who were funded have turned on the US? (Ronald Reagan) Who has a working relationship with the bib Laden family, serving on the Board of Directors of the Carlyle Group? (George HW Bush). Who allowed the bin Laden to leave the US when all aircraft in and out of US airspace were grounded? (George W. Bush) Who funded Saddam Hussein against the Iranians? (Ronald Reagan)
There’s more to this than you think….and I’m looking at it realistically!!!

My world’s GREAT! The focus of the NATION always has a racial tinge to it!! Look at how groups are pitted against each other! Is it “racist” to point that out?? Don’t think so…..but the more it’s pointed out…the sooner we as a nation can get past it!! To determine how to solve a problem, you have to see that the problem exists!! The nation isn’t perfect…but we are strving to create a “more perfect union”! You point out the flaws so that you can FIX them! Ignoring the flaws makes them harder to fix…….

The country was better under Bush than they have been under Obama. Bush has been vindicated with Gitmo, Iraq, Afghanistan, economy, and everything else.
Not everybody feels that way…..and as someone here said: perception IS reality!! I know of many who were working prior to 9/11/01….lost their jobs…and have YET to recover!! The economy went down….and in several areas, Bush has YET to be vindicated…but definitely vilified!!

Jumping in here, but who are the suckers? I venture it’s any of us who keep voting Tweedle-Dum (R) or Tweedle-Dee (D) We fall for the talking heads’ promotion of the two parties to the exclusion, and I do mean exclusion, of those who do come in trying to offer an alternative. The gubernatorial race here in Georgia is but one example. There is a third choice on the ballot. Someone said recently he wasn’t “getting his message out.” The media are intent on seeing to it that he doesn’t,
Racism, etc. Face it, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We are mired in a black-white dichotomy in this matter. Brown has found its voice and is beginning to get some attention now but black and white are, it appears, hell-bent on getting shed of as many of them as possible as quickly as possible up to an including virtual repeal of the 14th Amendment. Red has no voice and when mentioned is consistently referred to with crocodile tears in the past imperfect tense. Yellow? Let’s see, there was something on a slow news day about a MARTA line, wasn’t there?

josef, until we force change, the corporate owned media will never allow any non Rep-Dem voices to be heard. they long ago shut out and sold out the American people.
Just look at that farce called the Commission on Presidential Debates. Aka the American Politburo.
Take one teeny guess who controls it?
Yep, the Republican and Democratic Parties. Arguably, the two greatest failures in all of America.
But then they’ve ensured that the flacks who use our airwaves do so for free, not even paying rent to we the people, who own them, so it’s not at all surprising, is it?
And how ironic that the biggest blowhards in America, like HeadRush, and innumerable others, who rave and rant against the mooches turn out to be major league mooches as well…

HDB,
If you are going to go back decades in history and blame every thing there you don’t like on Bush, there is nothing I can say to you. You are acting like things were worse before Obama and that is not true. The debt was not as great whether you add in war expenses or not. You cannot say employment was wrorse with ‘Bush. You cann’t say the banks were in worse shape with Bush. You cannot say that the housing market was worse under Bush. You can’t say that worthless stimulus funds raising the national debt even more were thrown out by Bush. You want to nit pick the Bush years while ignoring the dilemma that is Obama.
Maybe if you hold up your head and look around you might notice that things are not going well. And you might notice that Obama is president and has been for some time now and the growing mess is under his administration. Keep whistling in the dark, fellow, but you have strayed from the obvious truth.

“You are acting like things were worse before Obama and that is not true. You cannot say employment was worse with Bush.” For some people, it IS true! Ask those who were suddenly thrust into unemployment on 9/11 (I know of a 25,000 person layoff that happened…I was IN it!) and have yet to recover; ask those who progressed under Clinton….and regressed under Bush!!
“The debt was not as great whether you add in war expenses or not.” Why then was the national debt DECLINING before Bush came to the White House…and his VP callously said: “Deficits don’t matter”?
“You can’t say the banks were in worse shape with Bush.” Then why was TARP necessary?? Why are the credit markets shot to h3ll right now??
“You cannot say that the housing market was worse under Bush.” Why then can’t people get mortgages? Why did the foreclosure rate begin to skyrocket?
“You can’t say that worthless stimulus funds raising the national debt even more were thrown out by Bush.” Why then are Republicans lining up to take credit for stimulus programs that they voted against??
“You want to nit pick the Bush years while ignoring the dilemma that is Obama.” No…not ignoring the dilemna..but I recognize the dilemna that Obama was thrust INTO!! What this Administration has to fix has been thrust upon it by 43 Administrations that preceeded it!! I don’t expect one man to fix in two years what took 234 years to screw up! For my two cents, “white trash” is a lifestyle and has nothing to do with money, lack of it, or where you live. A person that we considered “white trash” was just plain sorry. I’ve known plenty of them, rich, poor and in between.
Uppity, for us, just meant a person who was “big feeling”, sometimes they had reason to feel that way and most times not.

Crook or Liar – tough one, but the way it is supposed to work, crooks do their time and do their penance to society and are supposed to be absolved of their “mistake” (of which we all have done, but our society has allowed a mistake to morph into a lifelong pox).
Liars more than likely have perpetual character flaws (as do some crooks).
