Europe shows the result of total insistence on tolerance

The American people, having been put through endless sensitivity training over the past few decades, know offensiveness when they see it. And they see it in the mosque proposed for lower Manhattan.

So, yes, the American people are a bit stunned to find the fingers pointed at themselves when controversy erupts over a $100 million Islamic project just two blocks from where 10 terrorists brought down two 110-story towers in the name of Islam. They don’t find this turning of the sensitivity tables ironic, but outrageous.

They are more than irked to hear the speaker of the House of Representatives suggest that those Americans speaking out against the mosque should be investigated to see who’s bankrolling them, not least since the identities of the mosque’s donors are still being withheld.

They hear lofty talk about tolerance and upholding the First Amendment — or at least part of it — and they think, “The freedom to practice Islam in this country does not hinge on the specific placement of one mosque in downtown New York. That’s not what this is about.”

They find it hard to believe that reputedly moderate Muslims dedicated to “improving Muslim-West relations,” as the Cordoba Initiative group behind this project says it is, would be surprised to learn that Americans’ wound hasn’t scabbed over in nine divisive years. Or think that they can demonstrate good faith by tacking on a 9/11 memorial at the last minute.

In fact, if the Cordoba planners and their supporters understand anything about America in 2010, they will see a country that can’t seem to snap out of an economic downturn, that is underemployed and overextended, where an entire coastline stands to be covered in oil (until it isn’t), where the states are suing the feds over a health care law and the feds are suing a state over an immigration law and everyone is suing everyone else over gay marriage laws, where anti-war protesters are throwing pies in the faces of Democratic senators and flight attendants are cussing out their passengers and taking the emergency chute.

And they will think, maybe this is not the very best moment to gauge the national reserves of tolerance and patience.

The wiser heads among us will think about the ground zero mosque and that immigration law, and their thoughts will turn once again to that place that so often lately has been showing us the future consequences of our present actions: Europe.

They will recall that the political class’ general prescription for everyday Europeans’ misgivings about their substantial Muslim influx has been more insistence on tolerance, more multiculturalism and the dismissal of any concerns to the contrary from polite political conversation.

They will observe that the result in formerly tolerant places like Holland, where a filmmaker and a politician critical of Islam and immigrants were assassinated, and Belgium, where certain immigrant-heavy areas of the capital Brussels and the port city Antwerp are virtual no-go zones for people who look European, has been a spike in the popularity and electoral success of openly anti-immigrant, anti-Islam political parties.

They will note that the failure of political leaders in these countries, and in places like Denmark, Switzerland and even Britain, to deal seriously with popular complaints about the other has not ended the complaints but made them louder and uglier.

And they will conclude that even in America, with a prouder history of assimilation and inclusiveness than Europe has, it would be prudent to meet this outrage with something other than finger-wagging.

grand forks is retarded, go back to hiding in your bomb shelter. US is still free.

Hamas, he added, “is representing the vast majority of the Arabic and Islamic world — especially the Islamic side.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who so far has not taken a position on the mosque, dismissed the endorsement.

“Hamas is a terrorist organization, and their views don’t deserve any weight on anything,” his spokesman said.

What is mendacious, is to attempt to put words into my mouth that I never said. You misrepresent me completely when you falsely state:

“I just think that it is disingenuous of you to put forth that the worst places in London are muslim neighbourhoods…”

I did not say this.

However anywhere ‘worse’ (as you say) in London is due to poverty, deprivation and lack of education. The situation in East London’s Muslims neighbourhoods is something entirely different. It is the city’s only example of neo-cultural imperialism and racism. It is backed by the wealthy Muslim countries who compete with each other to fund extremist expansion and activity in foreign countries; (in this example London; in the case of this story in NY).

You seek to obfuscate the reality of the Islamic invasion of London, and its attempts to convert entire regions of the city to pure Islamic boroughs, (with the aim of controlling the whole city in the future). However you contradict yourself when you admit that your in-laws live “thankfully far” from the ‘Islamified’ parts of East London.

You betrayed yourself badly when you employed a Judeophobic blood-libel at 10:01pm, (which is a crimial hate crime in some countries), to discredit and dismiss the description of this reality in an article quoted from the NY Sun (above): Israel is engaged in a defensive war against Hamas in Gaza and yet you seek to argue that the publishers of the NY Sun are Jewish and along with all Jews want to “kill or bomb” Muslims. Israelis and Jews are not the same thing. If Israel or Jews wanted to Kill and Bomb Muslims as you falsely state I doubt Gaza (and several other Muslim countries) would exist anymore.

I do not hear Israelis calling for the Muslim countries to be wiped off the ‘pages of history’ / ”map’ (whatever). The same cannot be said for the Muslim countries (most of whom do not recognise Israel, are at war with it, fund Terrorists to attack its population or are seeking nuclear weapons to enact Holocaust 2, while denying Holocaust 1).

If you do not want all Muslims held liable for the actions of Al Quaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, The Muslim Brotherhood, (need I go on with this infamous list?) then I suggest you stop holding all Jews responsible for the civilians deaths caused by Hamas hiding behind Muslim children as they fire rockets at Israeli children.

The word ‘hypocrite’ springs to mind.

Back on topic: NY needs to prevent Mosques being errected to repeat what is happening in European cities from happening in NY. The thesis of the article is correct.

This just in:

Anonymous sources have reported that the obama administration will broker a deal to allow a Dubai based company and the Target Corporation to sponsor the new World Trade Center or “Freedom Tower”.

In reaction to anti-muslim sentiments by walmart, The Target Freedom Tower will proudly display their Target Corporation logo above the 100th floor accompanied by the crescent moon perched atop the 300 foot antenna that will adorn the 1776 ft. building.

Administration officials believe this will act as an olive branch and show of solidarity with our muslim brothers.

What this is is a warning against being so tolerant that you blindly submit to invasion by a muslim culture that does not seek to assimilate itself, but to force out free speech and thought. They will use our tolerance as their weapon, just as they have in Europe–where returning troops from the Middle East are jeered and had things thrown at them by muslims. When the left finally wakes up to what has happened, it will all be over, and way too late to do anything about it.

Zen, Zen, Zen… where did you manage to get so lost? Wealthy muslims funding the ‘extremist expansion’ of muslims in working class and poor neighbourhoods in Western countries? This is a very far stretch. I won’t argue that Wahhabis and other extremist groups have been behind the funding of some mosques and madrassas in Western countries, but they have certainly not bankrolled large-scale immigration of muslims to the west. If you were to be truly honest about your assessment of the muslim neighbourhoods of London, you would accept that the same scourges of poverty, deprivation and lack of education affect them as in the bad areas populated mainly by other ethnic groups. You are quite the conspiracy theorist to believe that muslim immigration to the West is part of a calculated campaign by wealthy Arabs to create Islamically pure boroughs. Which one of us needs to put the crack pipe down?

I did not contradict myself by indicating that I am glad that my in-laws live far from the areas we are speaking of. I did not say that I was glad they were far from ‘Islamified’ areas, I said I was glad they were far from crime-ridden, dangerous areas. You accuse me of putting words in your mouth and misrepresenting you, but you are doing precisely the same thing to me!

As to the Jewish question… Firstly, Israel is not engaged in a ‘defensive war’ with Hamas. It
is engaged in a brutal and illegal occupation of Palestine and the cruel oppression of the people of both Gaza and the West Bank. Before Ben Gurion and crew declared the state of Israel, illegally and in defiance of the UN, Jews occupied 6% of Palestine. They blamed the Palestinians for not accepting the partition plan, but the fact is that the UN partition plan, which gave the Zionists half of the territory, was patently unfair. No Palestinian in his right mind would have accepted such an unfair plan. In declaring and establishing their illegal state, the Zionists ethnically cleansed and murdered the occupants of the territory they wanted to possess, just as they had been ethnically cleansed and expelled from their lands by the Nazis, and just as the European colonists in North America dispossessed the Native Americans of their lands and lives. I see a pattern.

Zionists do not need to call for muslims to be wiped from the pages of history. They have a state (Israel) committed to wiping muslims from areas they wish to claim as their own and a sponsor state (the US) that steadfastly backs them up in the face of international outrage. They have no need for inflammatory rhetoric when they have the bombs and security forces to do the job for them.

Moonbat Betty,

I wish it were really up to New Yorkers. As a native New Yorker myself, it would be nice to think that the good folks of my hometown truly have the right of self-determination. If it were up to Mayor Bloomberg, perhaps they would. But just as Americans have claimed the right to determine what happens to Ground Zero, a part of Manhattan that most of them have never and will never visit, they claim the right to determine what happens on other parts of the island. On their own, they would not be able to actually influence what happens, but now that the issue has become an issue for national debate, the voice of non-New Yorkers may well influence what ultimately happens there.

So by your negative comment about Islamic tolerance (which is certainly false by the way) you’re judging the religion, apparently using that as a basis to oppose the Mosque (an abridgment of religious freedom). But I suspect you’re otherwise the kind of person who insists on the sacredness of the constitution in matters important to you at the moment.

You are right; there is quite a bit of residential resistance to the mosque. The big question is where the resistance is really coming from. Just as I accuse Americans at large of trying to influence what happens in Manhattan, I should point out that a lot of New Yorkers who do not live in downtown Manhattan also think they have the right to determine what happens there. That includes this New Yorker from Park Slope who hasn’t even lived in the US for over two decades! Perhaps we should all just shut up and allow the chips to fall as they may.

I am amazed @ the ignorance being shown here in relation to Islam. The stated goal of islam is to replace all the governments throughout the world with sharia law. Wherever islam is throughout the world there is terror, death, violence, intolerance, and war. It is a “religion” that is spread by force and violence. Always has been. They invade a country, impose sharia law, and kill anyone who disagrees with them and does not submit to their control. On 9-11, there was dancing in the streets throughout the muslim world because they had “struck a blow to the great satan”.
Why the hell should Americans be forced to tolerate that? Its BS & its time for right thinking Americans to stand up to this assault on our society and resist these people.Muslims! If you want sharia law, go back to mecca and leave us the hell alone.

You said: “My wife’s parents live in Hammersmith, thankfully far from the places that either you or I have mentioned” I only mentioned the Muslim areas of London.

You accept that Muslims pay for Mosques and Muslim infastructure, but you then deny that there is an organised effort to import their culture…you are contradicting yourself now.

You refer to ” the Jewish question” this is the precise language of the Third Reich. There is no ‘problem’ with all Jews; unless you are someone (sadistic and genocidal) that wants to kill them all.

You attempt to spin your revisionist ‘Islamic history’: Israel is not illegal, the UN voted recognition of it and the League of Nations created a legal madate for its re-creation (as it had existed before Muslims invaded it). In German surveys of the 1800s there were a majority of Jews living in what is now Israel including East Jerusalem which was later ethnically cleansed of Jews by the Muslims. The British inherited the mandate over Trans-Jordan which includes what is now Israel from the League of Nations at the end of the First World War. The League granted independence to many Muslim countries and set the scene for the freedom of all Muslims over the next three decades. Part of that plan was to provide the Jews a homeland as well. ALL of Trans-Jordan was given to the British to control under a legal Mandate, in order to re-constitute a Jewish country. However the British ILLEGALLY gave approximately 80% of the land to the Muslims who then founded the majority ‘Palestinian’ country of Jordan. So strictly speaking the Muslims already hold the majority of what the League of Nations provided for the Jews. In fact more Jews were expelled from Muslim countries in the late 1940s than the then entire Muslim population of what is now Israel, Gaza and the West Bank. You seem to have missed history class. Or perhaps you are misrepresenting history on purpose. Perhaps this is more in the line of the “Muslims founded the USA” stupidity?

You repeat the libels, lies and revisionism of classic Judeophobics. This is why non Muslims fear the Islamic cultural invasion of traditionally non-Muslim countries. It is not Islamaphobia, it is simple rationality. If you repeat such self-evident lies, nothing you have to say can be taken seriously.

This is not some Middle Eastern forum for ranting against Jews. Your libel against Jews is just an attempt to divert the debate. The subject is about a mosque being built in NY against the wishes of the vast majority of Americans. Stay on topic of you have the IQ to focus.

Craig,

I am amazed by YOUR ignorance. Obviously you know very little and what little you know you have gleaned from less than reputable ‘news’ sources.

Replacing secular governments and imposing sharia law is not and has never been an objective of Islam as a whole. Yes, certain extremist groups have expressed such goals, but that is no more the raison d’etre of all of Islam than the Crusades were the expressed interest of all of Christendom. In actual fact, a great many powerful muslim majority states are resolutely opposed to radicalised Islam and sharia law. The Turkish military establishment has stepped in many times over the last decades to prevent radical Islam from taking a foothold in Ataturk’s secular state and Hosni Mubarak’s security apparatus has cracked down ruthlessly on the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Even the Ottoman empire in its heyday never tried to impose Islam on all of its subjects. In fact, it was extremely tolerant of the religious preferences of the territories it conquered. Even Iran, where the phrase ‘the great satan’ originated, is tolerant of its Jewish and Christian minorities.

On 9-11 I was in Cairo. I witnessed absolutely no dancing in the streets. Actually, most of the people that I came across were just as stunned as I was and just as appalled at the senseless killing of innocent civilians.

You really ought to get a clue. It is crass ignorance like yours that contributes to so much of the misunderstanding that makes our world such a dangerous and volatile place to live.

It seems that modern conservatism cannot exist without finding a demon to be feared and demanding the whole world hurl itself with utter abandon into the flames of that fear. Those of us who don’t buy into the fear are held up as agents of this demon. It’s a simple tactic, and it works because there’s something deeply in human nature that responds to fear more sensitively than to other emotions–perhaps it’s what makes us feel a baby’s cry more fully than someone’s laughter, a leftover from our pre-verbal past when primal emotions were what allowed us to survive.

Kenneth Clarke once said that the great enemy of civilization is fear–it’s fear more than any other force that makes civilizations fall. Fear is all conservatism has to offer. You simply have no other ideas to offer.

I have no more affection for Islam than I do for any other organized religion. I think all of them are designed not to reveal God, but to conceal God. That being said, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business except the local residents and property owners what gets built in Manhattan or anywhere else. The mosque issue is nothing but an attempt to distract us from what we really need to be doing, which is trying to rebuild this tattered, bankrupt country, provide for our future and put people back to work.

Who is funding the construction of this center and the other mosques and Islamic centers throughout the U.S? You can ignore the warning signs if you wish, but there is an agenda behind this. Back in June, I was traveling down to the gulf and went through Pensacola. I had a flat tire and had to make a detour to get the tire fixed. On the way to the tire place, we passed a sizeable mosque and cultural center centered on at least 10 acres of property. I guess we can’t learn if we don’t experience pain. The Muslims that support the building of the Mosque near ground zero seem to be surprised that building a place to worship God in their way would be extremely painful to other non-Muslim Americans. Although they have every right to do it others will view this as a blow to making Islam a normal part of the American religious landscape. Maybe the building of the Mosque in New York is the very thing we need to start the healing of 9/11 and teach us a new lesson in tolerance. Maybe it will feed a backlash of intolerance to Mosque building. I don’t know which way this will go, but I do know the lesson we can learn from this is that every America should have a right to religion and be able to worship God in their own way no matter what. We must put our faith in the Constitution and reaffirm our freedoms if we are to get through these hard times. We should make freedom of religion full and real to all Americans, Muslims included, and not give into hatred and intolerance.

From National Review
“Everything you need to know about President Obama’s fraudulent ethics pledge can be summed up in four words: SEIU lawyer Craig Becker.

Becker is the left-wing lawyer Obama sneakily installed on the National Labor Relations Board. The U.S. Senate declined to confirm Becker’s nomination on a 52‒33 cloture vote in February. Obama responded by flipping senators the bird and ramming through his recess appointment during the congressional spring break. (The New York Times approvingly dubbed it a “muscular show of his executive authority.” When that authority was exercised by GOP president George W. Bush, of course, the Times editorial board called it a “constitutional gimmick.”)

From ajc.com
Georgia’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 9.9 percent in July from 10 percent in June, as discouraged workers gave up their job search so they are no longer counted as unemployed, the state labor department reported Thursday.

“Although the unemployment rate remained virtually unchanged, a growing number of discouraged workers dropped out of the workforce,” state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said in a statement. “For the second consecutive month, the number of jobs in our state declined, new layoffs increased and long-term unemployment continued to rise.”

Now, if anyone wants to continue to demonize conservatives, I’ll go get the popcorn.

Good luck in November!
