More on those climate emails

Complete with a new name: Climaquiddick.

To get up to speed if you haven’t been following this story closely, here’s my post on it yesterday. Short version: A large batch of data from one of the world’s leading climate science centers was released on the Internet last week; this includes thousands of emails and other documents that reveal scientists at the center — people who have been intimately involved in the reports of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — may have been manipulating their data, and certainly intended to foil Freedom of Information requests and keep contrarian researchers out of peer-review journals if possible.

The focus on the story has turned from the emails the scientists exchanged to the computer code their center was using to produce its data sets, which have been an integral part of the IPCC’s reports. Declan McCullagh at CBS News reports some of the findings so far:

One programmer highlighted the error of relying on computer code that, if it generates an error message, continues as if nothing untoward ever occurred. Another debugged the code by pointing out why the output of a calculation that should always generate a positive number was incorrectly generating a negative one. A third concluded: “I feel for this guy. He’s obviously spent years trying to get data from undocumented and completely messy sources.”

Programmer-written comments inserted into CRU’s Fortran code have drawn fire as well. The file briffa_sep98_d.pro says: “Apply a VERY ARTIFICAL correction for decline!!” and “APPLY ARTIFICIAL CORRECTION.” Another, quantify_tsdcal.pro, says: “Low pass filtering at century and longer time scales never gets rid of the trend – so eventually I start to scale down the 120-yr low pass time series to mimic the effect of removing/adding longer time scales!”

At Pajamas Media, which has been producing some of the most in-depth coverage of this story, Charlie Martin examines the code further and concludes:

[P]ut this in the context of what else we know from the CRU data dump:

1. They didn’t want to release their data or code, and they particularly weren’t interested in releasing any intermediate steps that would help someone else

2. They clearly have some history of massaging the data — hell, practically water-boarding the data — to get it to fit their other results. Results they can no longer even replicate on their own systems.

3. They had successfully managed to restrict peer review to what we might call the “RealClimate clique” — the small group of true believers they knew could be trusted to say the right things.

As a result, it looks like they found themselves trapped. They had the big research organizations, the big grants — and when they found themselves challenged, they discovered they’d built their conclusions on fine beach sand.

But the tide was coming in.

Even if the CRU crew are only guilty of promising more than they could deliver, that’s still a hugely important turn of events in the climate-change debate — and reason enough to put the policy debate on pause while this new information is sorted out.

Finally, on a more humorous note, check out this video created for Minnesotans for Global Warming by the folks at JibJab.com:

“The University of East Anglia has released statements from Prof Trevor Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Prof Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit, and from CRU.

Statement from Professor Trevor Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research

The publication of a selection of the emails and data stolen from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) has led to some questioning of the climate science research published by CRU and others. There is nothing in the stolen material which indicates that peer-reviewed publications by CRU, and others, on the nature of global warming and related climate change are not of the highest-quality of scientific investigation and interpretation. CRU’s peer-reviewed publications are consistent with, and have contributed to, the overwhelming scientific consensus that the climate is being strongly influenced by human activity. The interactions of the atmosphere, oceans, land, and ice mean that the strongly-increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere do not produce a uniform year-on-year increase in global temperature. On time-scales of 5-10 years, however, there is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will continue to warm, with attendant changes in the climate, for the foreseeable future. It is important, for all countries, that this warming is slowed down, through substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to reduce the most dangerous impacts of climate change. Respected international research groups, using other data sets, have come to the same conclusion.

The University of East Anglia and CRU are committed to scientific integrity, open debate and enhancing understanding. This includes a commitment to the international peer-review system upon which progress in science relies. It is this tried and tested system which has underpinned the assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It is through that process that we can engage in respectful and informed debate with scientists whose analyses appear not to be consistent with the current overwhelming consensus on climate change.”

Regardless of the ‘innocence’ of the hacked emails and programmer’s notes, clearly the muddled mess of the data (the programmer can’t figure out what files are what, what the right dates are, where some files are, which instrument station is which) screams that the results could not possibly generate results that are correct to a tenth of a degree globally – for any time period.

It can easily be inferred that the CRU scientists knew of the poor quality control of the data, considering the great lengths they went to hide it from review.

That these ’scientists’ claimed they could produce the results they published, with the uncertainty levels as low as they presented, is fraud all by itself.

The data these guys used became the basis and assumptions of many studies researched and produced by dozens of ethical, honest climate scientists around the world. All of their work is now tainted….and they are mad. Angry, too, are all the scientists who could not get published in peer-review literature because their conclusions were ‘not consistant with’ AGW.

Some people are facing a very big fall. Those on the periphery need to start coming clean to salvage their reputations.

It’s not surprising. At this point, I can’t imagine that they will come up with anything meaningful in Copenhagen — probably a promise to come up with a plan — so if I were him I would skip it. But I won’t fault him for it the way I did his trip to the Olympics meeting in Copenhagen.

I’d say that, if nothing else, this should put to rest the idea that there’s any sort of scientific “consensus” on man-made global warming. And considering most of the scientists backing man-made global warming base at least some of their research on data from the East Anglia institute, making ANY laws based on this junk science would be the height of irresponsibility.

I guess some might call me a global warming denier. That’s not so. I merely want it researched more, as it seems like we were basing a major restructuring of the entire world on inconclusive data backed by science we hardly understand, and certainly haven’t mastered. So now that a lot of it turns out to be fake science, let’s open this up for real debate. Let’s get some solid data, have some reliable models created, and see what’s going on. And throw out any data that ever came from East Anglia, as it cannot be trusted.

Time for real debate and discussion, and time to ignore Gore, as he bases everything he says on data from East Anglia.

The Scam Artists are in full panic and damage control mode. Entire careers are on the line and this causes extreme panic and stress for those who have now been caught. How stupid can they be to think they would not eventually be exposed?

They misled the entire planet. This is the exact same thing as the so-called bad and cooked intelligence for the Iraq war. The Left thinks its free to cook false data.

The Left is WRONG. So many people have bought into this lie through stupidity and trust in the “integrity” of “science”. Here’s a clue – so called “scientists” on the Left can be just as crooked as anyone else. They are not heroes. They are not saints. They are greedy, lying, petty little left wing dweebs who have now been caught RED handed.

Hey Kyle…….what do you make of this ?

The Arctic ice cap has collapsed at an unprecedented rate this summer and levels of sea ice in the region now stand at record lows, scientists have announced.

Experts say they are “stunned” by the loss of ice, with an area almost twice as big as the UK disappearing in the last week alone.

So much ice has melted this summer that the Northwest passage across the top of Canada is fully navigable, and observers say the Northeast passage along Russia’s Arctic coast could open later this month.

If the increased rate of melting continues, the summertime Arctic could be totally free of ice by 2030.

And add to that the fact that he flies around the world in private jets (HUGE carbon footprint) going from speech to speech polluting the world with more carbon and more bullshit, and what you have is a major hypocrite. If he was serious about all of this, and not just increasing his bank account, why doesn’t he hold big speeches over the internet instead of taking a private jet?

From looking at some of the data and papers, itseems to me that these guys were mixing ordinal and nominal data sets at will without regard for sound mathematical principles. This is just plain bad science and not being careful.

His total electric & gas bills were $29,268 in ‘06 & $31,512 in ‘05. These are 20 times higher than the national average.

Peter@11:33, The global warming theory was supposed to based on science. It was more complicated than using a thermometer & a Fyrite device. You would be surprised how far science has come. Scientists have been drilling holes in the ice in Antarctica & Greenland for decades up to 3623 miles deep that record past environmental conditions stretching back 740,000 years covering up to 8 glacial periods. There’s proof that oxygen, methane, CO2, dust & temperatures rise & fall together & have been for hundreds of thousands of years.

Peter,
I believe the point Linda was trying to make is…Al Gore, considers himself to be champion of the Global Warming cause. Why wouldn’t he live in a resident where the energy footprint to cool/heat it would be much smaller. If he can make that happen in a large house, then great (but he certainly doesn’t seem to be). But for him to stand infront of the rest of the world lamenting the woes of Global Warming while his home uses huge amounts of electrical and gas energy seems very disingenious.

He’s a politician plain and simple and has made billions off of this stuff. The Farmers Almanac is the only true source of weather predictions and is right year after year after year. No one can say that we will all die from rising sea levels or hurricanes. The Earth has changed on its own for 1000s of years. Here you go Linda…and excerpt……

Now 33 solar panels have been installed on the mansion’s roof, and are expected to generate 6,570 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. The Gores have been trying to put them up for nine months, but until April were blocked by local planning laws – dating from 1938 – which forbad them. A new ordinance now allows them so long as they cannot be seen by neighbours. The panels will still only enable them to get a relatively small proportion of their power from the sun – but they are now also installing an Australian-developed geothermal energy system to provide all their heating and hot water from rock 300ft under their home, which both Gores also use for their offices.

I posted this on Bookman’s blog several weeks ago. For those who missed it:

For sale: Carbon Debits (to offset the offsets)

For all of those who have not bought into the fallacy of AGW (Anthropogenic (man-made) Global Warming) and want to demonstrate your lack of faith in AGW to all those who belong to the Church of AGW (High Priest: Al Gore), which is, according to geologist Ian Plimer, the “New Religion of First World Elites,” consider Carbon Debits.

This is how it works: For those of you who don’t have the time to live a life of excess, send me $5, $10, $1,000–whatever you feel you necessary–and I will labor to live a life of excess, producing as much carbon as possible through traveling, water-skiing, fishing, watching plasma tv’s, etc. to help offset all of the offsets purchased in vain by those deceived by the “Greatest Scam in History” (according to the founder of the Weather Channel). You will get a receipt denoting the purchase of your Carbon Debit with a unique identifying number so that it cannot be duplicated.

To contact me just dial: BR5-49 (ask for “Junior”).

“Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.” – Barack Obama.

Peter@2:13, I mentioned the electric bills I quoted were from ‘05 & ‘06. The report was released in ‘07, coincidentally when the Gores started their “green” renovations, which have actually INCREASED their electric consumption by 10%.
The Gores purchased a monstrous 100-foot houseboat a few months ago. It uses bio-diesel fuel which is not sold at the marina where it’s housed. He says he’s ordered solar panels from the co. in Nevada (Chinese?) but it’s plugged into the electric socket on the dock. The jet skis on the boat use gas as does all his cars that will use fossil fuels to get to the marina & back.

Peter@2:17, Solar, wind & biofuels have already proven to be cost prohibitive, etc. There’s always a problem with solar since the sun SETS & with wind when it doesn’t BLOW. The answer for alternative fuels are natural gas & nuclear power. The BIG problem is that almost ALL our vehicles use oil. We have to have oil to survive (work, etc) until we have an alternative. Why can’t we drill more of our own oil?

Peter, What’s wrong with Yucca Mt for nuclear waste? We’ve spent $13.5 B developing it. There’s 60,000 tons of waste being held in pools & above ground concrete containers at 104 commercial power plants. Obama just scrapped the plan & said all this waste can just say where it is. The Dems oppose any energy they can’t cap, trade, tax & make $ on.
Owners of buildings can retrofit them without authority of energy companies. I have received credits from energy companies to make my properties more energy efficient.

Linda…this comment…….”The Dems oppose any energy they can’t cap, trade, tax & make $ on.”….I would say all parties think the sames, and so do the energy companies !

Great job on the redoing of your properties. We are redoing a ranch, we have all new windows and doors, lots more insulation, and I know that is going to help allot.

As far as commercial buildings, I imagine slowly that will happen. The nuclear waste is a major issue, I haven’t thought much about the subject.

With the cost of a nuclear plant these days in the billions of dollars, I don’t understand why solar is not viable.

For you alarmists and Global Worming Thugs, so what if the world temperature rises 50 degrees and mankind goes the way of the Do Do Bird? So what? Do you really think that Humanity or the earth for that matter is so important to the overall universal picture that it deserves saving?
No matter what you do in the 21st century it will be only a minor thought in the 22nd century or the 23rd century. Earth and humanity is a temporary thing. Face it.

We are just at the beginning of this scandal.

Rather than rely on “commentators” about what it is and what it isn’t, I’ve read 30 or 40 of the emails and, also, the comments on the “code”.

It is very damning and we just began to mine the politics behind AGW.

If Hadley Climate Research Unit wants to prevent this from become a formal investigation, just release the data used in the models and the models themselves.

No, they fought releasing information and in one email pledged to destroy it before it became public.

Those on the fence and those with open minds … go to Wattsupwiththat.com website … or any website with the emails and make up your own mind.

Don’t depend on surrogates and commentators.

Read and decide.

I remember when Senator Sam Erwin in the Watergate scandal was challenged “how could you know that?”, he responded:

“Because I can understand the English language. It’s my mother’s tongue.”

The emails are in English … you decide … if you’re posting here, you have enough interest to read the emails and the “cooked code”.

If you are reading this you understand English whether it is your “Mother tongue” or not.

Read them yourselves and decide.

You better START liking Communism, because that is the purpose of climate change, which you defend. enjoyed everyone’s comments, even peter’s, who appears to be diametrically opposed to my viewpoints on every issue raised! As a former orange county, ca. republican, now a wyoming libertarian, I wanted to share a couple of points. #1, Nuclear power was shot down by the left 35 years ago, the so-called environmental movement is directly responsible for the prevalence of “King-Coal” in energy use today. Forget Carbon footprint junk science, Coal has some byproduct, including radiation, that is downright nasty! Lose coal via Nuclear or other alternate energy abd you’ll make everyone happy except the coal producing states and lobbies. #2, I live off grid, using two windmills and some solar, suplemented by a large and expensive propane generator. I don’t bo this because I give a $#%$ about Al Gores agenda, but because—–ready—– IT COSTS ME LESS!
The argument for alternative fuel use must be economic, people don’t change unless it hits their pocketbook. Wihch brings me to my third point, #3 WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF OIL. If the so-called greens and the Rational Anarchists like myself could simply couch our discussions in these terms you would be amazed what this country could dig itself out of. Soo ends the sermon….

What would be wrong in the first place if the Earth did get warmer? For one thing, people would be burning less fuel to keep warm in the winter time. When I was actually working in a greenhouse, I bought some CO2 tanks to enrich the greenhouse environment. The plants grew twice as tall, and produced more fruit. I cannot believe people, especially scientist, are so stupid.

Linda, I appreciate you thinking differently than I, but you on the other hand, are insulted by someone thinking different than you.

Please pray for yourself. Maybe you can be enlightened to the fact there are many many religions, beliefs, and theories on Religious beliefs.

Some folks believe as Taoists, or Buddhists……these folks don’t pray to a god. They believe all life is intertwined.

You mention you never heard God was a man made idea, if he is not then how was he originated ?

You also have a big issue with China, and think they are not aware of the ecological problems with the earth, and their region, and seemingly don’t care.

I suppose you are unaware of China’s 5-Year $454 Billion Environmental Initiative.

Short version of longer post which seems to have vanished into the ether:
The IPCC has responded to climaquiddick, which Kyle seems to call this issue. (Did someone die and I missed it?)

http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/26/pachauri-discusses-the-climate-files/

The interesting part is that there was a response to the IPCC’s response from one of the delegates to the IPCC. Both pieces are in the above URL.

As a person who has been in information systems since 1966, the comments are in the code are:
1. Not surprising, since they come from an amateur programmer, and
2. Utterly damning with regard to whoever was administrating those projects, from a data integrity, data recoverability, programming version control standpoint, forget what they have to say about AGW.

The net is that, given the amount of money and exposure we have on this subject, the administration of climate science appears to be too important to be left to climate scientists.

Hey all,
So even if Global Warming either is not occurring, or is not being caused by human activity, all of you worrying about how much it will cost you if climate change legislation is enacted should instead consider the investment opportunities that will exist in the many companies that will find ways to profit from cap and trade and CO2 sequestration technologies. In the end many who are crying now about the cost will be the ones that are making it hand over fist. It’s always the way.

“They changed the name from global warming to climate change, because the earth is getting cooler, not warmer.”

No, they call it climate change because it is more encompassing, Since the earth will not warm in a uniform manner (poles will warm up more), the increased temperature gradient will cause more severe weather, tropical cyclones in some areas, increased drought in others, flooding in still others. The name Global Warming does not capture this, hence “Climate Change”. Quite simple really.
