My initial disagreement with your article Is that you use the term "Ponzi schemes" for Social Security and Medicare. They are shell games played by both political parties. My mother was a "Notch Baby" for Social Security. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/notch+baby Guess when the change was made.... The Social Security "surplus" has been used as a slush fund to pay for anything the controlling party desires. Already suggestions have been made for an adjustment for the "retirement" age and reduced benefits. How will Gen X feel when the Boomers have to continue to work???

Medicare... The best way to describe this situation is I have a friend who called me about it. He was handling his mother's affairs. A CPA retired from a Big Eight firm.

BTW the govt controls 60% of the health insurance in this country already through Medicare and Medicaid.

O will bail it out!
New Yorkers need you. So do those poor soles in CA. I've been having loads of fun in Boston, LA & San Francisco. I've been "bashing." It makes me turn red. I thank God every day I'm a Christian.
I don't comment on Krugman. His readers have no sense of humor & their noses are higher than the scrapers.
Good luck.

Mr. Axelfraud, Don't waste your talents this weekend. GA is mostly a respectable conservative state. People from blue states such as NY & CA need help & can certainly use yours. While you are on probation, go getum. You can converse with people who actually believe in anything from gay marriage, global warming, animal rights over unborn fetuses to organic foods. Tackle Krugman. He claims he's in the political class.

Mr. Liberty @ 8:58, You are wrong. I'm not a Rep. There's plenty of blame to go around for the mess we're in. The worst event was the world-wide economic crisis & Bush has been wrongfully blamed for it & most everything else.
How do you know what Fox is reporting without watching it yourself?
I don't know why Congress approved these 2 wars rather than hiring mercenaries, not why they didn't dispatch mercenaries to go after the radical Islamic terrorists who have been murdering & maiming Americans is dozens of countries for 30 yrs., nor why the US hasn't used it since the War of 1812. Sounds like a great idea for the pirate problem.
It was you who implied that we shouldn't have gone to Afghanistan since most of the terrorists were from Saudi.
I'm not killing anyone.
We're still debating on going to war in Iraq & Afghanistan & it's an interesting debate, but we are there, at war, today. The pres. is mulling over the # of troops, the mission, the time-frame, etc., again. Whatever is decided should be based on why we are there today, not why we went there 7 to 8 yrs ago.
I find it to be a coincidence & absolutely amazing that what we've spent on both wars in 8 yrs. is almost exactly what the current DC bunch approved in a matter of hours to spend on the economic stimulus bill, passed unread less than 3 wks. after this pres was inaugurated, the single most expensive piece of legislation in American history, which was never intended to stimulate the economy & hasn't.

Axelfraud: Just so you know, you and Calhoun will be in moderation until Monday. We had a good discussion yesterday -- no name-calling, lots of substance, a very spirited but civil back-and-forth. That is what I and most readers want on this blog. If you and Calhoun can fit into that kind of debate, you're welcome on here. Remember, you don't have to respond to any name-calling directed toward you.

And to everyone else: Don't try to bait Axelfraud, Calhoun or anyone else.

I was listening to an economics professor from the University of Maryland this morning. He said that by the time we hit 2011, the unemployment rate will be at 15% due to stupid policies by Obama.

Yep, that's CHAINS WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!!!!

Democrats. Can't live with them but you sure can vote them out of office.

Taxpayer - You should be implying that there is one underlying cause for the financial bubble. It is the same as the cause of the housing bubble, the stock market bubble, the dot com bubble, and every other financial crisis that has impacted this country since 1913.

The cause is the Federal Reserve and its ability to manipulate the quantity of money in circulation and the cost of money (interest rates). Their actions have cause the loss of more than 95% of the value of the dollar since its their inception in 1913. Their lowering of interest rates has caused untold malinvestment in stocks, real estate, and provided the cheap money that ultimately allowed the rampant lending to unqualified borrowers that is at the heart of the current derivatives, commercial real estate, credit default swaps, etc. crisis we are now only at the beginning of.

Please go to www.mises.org and read up on these issues. While republicans and democrats work to carry water for the criminals in the Federal Reserve, the mass media further continues to lie to the public about the Federal Reserves real role in causing the problems.

Everyone owes it to themselves to find out the truth about how this organization has singlehandedly destroyed the economic foundation of this great country.

Kyle, why don't you visit the site as well. You could really use a good economics education.

Linda, like so many republicans, you seem to assume that any criticism of Bush is an endorcement of Clinton, Obama, etc. Hillary is as big a liar as anyone. Everyone in the US government was lying about Iraq (except Ron Paul and out intelligence agencies). Hillary was doing it to try and look "strong" in preparation for a presidential run. If you are unaware of the oil pipeline, the failed negotiations that were going on with the Taliban and Shell Oil in August of 2001, and the repeated reports from our own intelligence regarding WMD's and Iraq, then you need to stop watching Fox News and start doing some real research. I really don't know how to counter an argument based solely on the lies coming from the government mouthpieces except to say look at the source and look at who benefitted from the two wars.

The Constitution provides a mechanism for Congress to address non-nation threats or attacks on american interests, etc. They are called Letters of Marque and Reprisal. Yes, right there in the constitution. Congressman Ron Paul was the only congressman to introduce legislation calling upon Congress to issue these letters and to put together a team of soldiers, mercenaries, etc. to hunt down those responsible for planning 9-11 and to bring them to justice. 9-11 was a crimial matter. It was not an attack on us by another country. There were camps in Afghanistan certainly, but they were not being funded by the government, and certainly were not a product of the democratic support of the population. Most of those 19 folks trained and lived in the US. You would not suggest that we should have attacked Florida for having a training school there. For that matter, just because they came from Saudi Arabia doesn't mean that Saudi Arabia deserved to be attacked and destroyed.

What is your problem?? Why do you need to kill innocent people for the actions of others? Because that is exactly what you are essentially implying in your questions to me.

Had we followed the constitution, organized individuals to hunt down those responsible, and not just blown the hell out of Afghanistan and Iraq on behalf of the military industrial complex and on behalf of the Israeli govnernment, we would be so much safer now and so much better off financially.

Real recovery is actually beginning in Germany, France, and other countries of Europe that were SMART enough to not get involved with us in our stupid and pointless wars in the middle east.

There is just no way to justify our military approach. It is unfortunate that you can only consider the total destruction of a country as the appropriate response for hunting down and capturing a few dozen or even hundred individuals for committing a crime. It is also unfortunate that so many of you have bought into the big lie about the need for endless war. Your children and your grandchildren will be forced to shed a lot of blood for this lie.
