Update at 11:30 p.m.: Looks like a run-off in Atlanta barring some surprising late results. We’ll go through those late results Wednesday morning.
Update at 11 p.m.: New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has just conceded to Republican Chris Christie, giving the GOP two new governorships. Some people, however, will point to the congressional race in upstate New York, where Democrat Bill Owens continues to lead Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, as a place where the Democrats salvaged something.
I’m on the road tonight and don’t have access to which precincts are reporting, but locally it’s surprising to me that Norwood is down to 44 percent and Reed is up to 38 percent at this point. The narrowest projections I had seen/heard were still calling for a double-digit margin for Norwood even if she didn’t win outright. If the margin stays in the single digits, Norwood will really face an up-hill battle in the run-off.
Original post:
Election results are coming in…while it’s still early here in Atlanta, Republicans have swept three offices in Virginia and are leading in New Jersey as I type this (with 68 percent of precincts there reporting).
For all the political junkies out there tonight: Which races are you following most closely? Does anyone think Mary Norwood’s anti-Republican ad in the last days might have cost her the support she needed to win without a runoff?

Ha Ha , Obama’s shine has worn down again. I’m glad he wasted our countries time and the soldiers time doing the only thing he is good at, campaigning. Tonight is just a small look at what is going to happen in 2010. Change in 2010 and 2012, Change we are looking forward too.

SF: Methiks you are jumping the gun. Va hasn’t elected a governor from the same party as the president since 1977. It has also been split 20/20 over the past 40 years between both parties. In NJ, Corzine won in 2004 against Doug Forrester, who had won the Republican primary with only 36% of the vote. NJ also has had Republican Governors 12 of the past 20 years. Corzine had never been particularly popular and had approval rating as low as 35% and disapproval 40% in 2006. His approval held around 355 in the recent electon yet still managed to get around 45% of the vote. The real story is the 23rd Congressional District in NY. Granted Owens won with only 49.1% of the vote, but Republicans have held the seat since 1994 and have won with a minimum of 60.5% of the vote.

Looks like the y’all lost the special election for the house seat in upstate NY Kyle.
That seat has not elected a dem since 1852. It appears that the Conservative purists have misjudged their power. The candidate supported by Fox News and the WSJ lost — so much for ideological purity — huh Kyle?
The GOP candidates in NJ and Virginia ran more moderate campaigns and won. (Corzine is an ass and I’m glad he lost.) But I’m sure you won’t hear that distinction in the GOP echo chamber (which is just as bad as the democratic echo chamber). Maybe its time the two parties and you pundits realize that many voters don’t like either one of the parties and we will vote as we feel — not as you dictate.

Why do Republicans hate women? Red States hits the Republican problem on the head, is anyone listening in the 20% party or they too busy taking money from the lobbyist?
“As a result, the New York 23rd Congressional District race will end up being between a Conservative Party candidate and a Democrat. In many ways, that pairing reflects the reality of national match-ups more than the typical partisan competition. There are more conservatives than Democrats in America, and there are more Democrats than Republicans.”
Guess that throws the whole idea of moving the party to the left to capture more people into question, eh? We should be moving RIGHT to get more heads.
“One reason for this is that while Republican voters overwhelmingly consider themselves conservative, only 56% of conservative voters consider themselves to be Republicans. In other words, nearly half of all conservatives nationwide reject the Republican Party label.”
There you go. The GOP has a branding problem even among conservatives. Be all things to all people and you got someone that no one likes. Like a football referee.

Ghetto Grandpa, what you and other troglodyte libs seem to not understand is that Dede dropped out of the race and threw her support for the Democrat. SHE IS AND WAS A DEMOCRAT! She took 6000 votes away from Hoffman. Hoffman also didn’t enter the race until late in the game.
Bottom line: That district will be up for re-election next year.
Democrats lost and lost bad last night in states that they controlled for a long long time. New Jersey is and has been a democrat controlled state for years. Its equivalent to Texas if Texas went blue.

Gay marriage was voted down now in 31 states. Maine is hardly a conservative red state and that should tell the liberals and the liberal media that America rejects gay marriage.

Why it it that this piece of crap newspaper never passes on an opportunity to race bait here in Atlanta? Nice headline today on “Racial bias in suspensions” but no facts in the article to substantiate. Just an opportunity to give some people who want to holler discrimination their 15 minutes of fame – what a pathetic organization.

The NY 23rd election will be a short term for Owens. He must run for re-election next year. A Republican will win (if it is not Hoffman – wow, what a lazy, lousy candidate) in 2010. After 2010 the district will disappear when NY redistricts after the 2010 census. News reports said that was why McHugh, the incumbent, took the Sec of Army job from Obama. He was going to be out of a job anyway.
I find it amazing that for 9 straight elections the White House has lost the Virginia governors race the very next year. One would think that with really good politicians like Reagan, Clinton & Bush 43 that one of them would have broken the trend. But no.
And now NJ has done the same thing 6 straight elections.
Tip O’Neill was correct – “all politics is local”.

Someone on Bookmans blog actually wrote that in 10 years, the gay population will explode and will be in will be normal in America.
1: How can the gay population explode when it can’t even reproduce?
2: Liberals in the 70s said that we would be living in an ice age right now.
3: Al Gore said we would be doomed 5 years ago. We’re still here.
4: Obama said the stimulus package would bring jobs back. Still……waiting…………
5: John Edwards and John Kerry predicted that paraplegics would walk again……if voters would vote for them.
AHHHHHHHHHH, the mind, I mean lack of a mind, of a liberal.

@Churchill’s MOM 9:30 am “Why do Republicans hate women?”
You turn a blind eye to the bigotry of the DemoCRAPtic candidates and constituents during the presidential primary and general election — unabashed misogynists, race baiters/hustlers, homophobes — that fish stinks from the head down.
That is just their seasoning for the stew of fiscal irresponsibility, maoist leanings, thuggishness, and corruption. Next, bus in the Seiu and Acorn goons to stir the pot.
For me the argument does not involve left versus right. It is strong, socialistic government versus our Democratic Republic.

NY-23 can be spun any number of ways: Democrat won, Democrat almost lost to a third-party candidate, Republicans nominated a liberal and that shows they should move right, Republicans savaged a liberal and that shows they aren’t “moderate” (perhaps the most undefinable word in the political lexicon).
To me, what matters is what happens as a result. Does the GOP look at other locations where party bosses decide nominees in back rooms, and try to put more inclusive selection processes in place? (Same goes for Democrats.) Does the GOP divide into warring camps? (I think this fear is overblown; Scozzafava favored so many Democratic policies, I don’t know how she could even be called a RINO. She may be the worst candidate in the history of candidates…there is a difference between ideological purity and insisting that the candidate of a certain party have some semblance of allegiance to what that party stands for.)
Maybe more importantly, does this embolden or discourage the tea partiers, who were able to shove Scozzafava out but didn’t get Hoffman over the hump? That group’s intensity and motivation (or lack thereof) will be an important factor in the mid-terms.

Churchill’s MOM, ditto to you. I wrote that because I see that liberal bloggers, over on Bookmans side, write stuff like about Republicans on a daily basis. Thought I would turn that around on them. And, no, CM, you were not writing over my head. I’m sure it makes you feel special when you think that you are writing over someones head but my questions were aimed at liberals who constantly make remarks about how conservatives are bigots and racists. It gets old.
Bottom line: Maine is not a red state and the voters voting down gay marriage is proof that this country is not as liberal as the media and the DNC believe. If America was making a left turn then the DNC would be “jizzing in their pants” as Andy Sandberg so famous sang it.

Spare me political parties that spend us into the ground. Spare me politicians who kiss up to the welfare recipients among us–those who contribute squat to the economy or to the general well being of the country and the world. Bring on the politicians who believe in individual responsibility, individual liberty and consequences for those who drop out but want to be supported all their lives. I am sick of the entitlement mentality so much of this country has. Let’s do abort all those unwanted little kids who will live lives of hell, and end up in jail all because some well meaning voter has salvaged the career of a “give away” or “redistribution” jerk like Obama.

I am with you 100% on that statement. I have been looking for that candidate since 1960, my first presidential election. I have yet to find that person.
Everytime I believe I have found that candidate I start asking questions. And I get answers. The Republicans I ask start giving me liberal, big government, answers to simple questions about individual rights & liberties. Democrats I ask start giving me liberal, big government, answers to simple questions about individual rights & liberties. I cannot find anyone who really believes in an individuals right to live a life free from government intervention & supervision.
If you find one please let me know.

Agreed. Take the last president to complete his full term. We political conservatives had been fighting against expanding entitlements for 25 years. And successfully. Heck, we basically ended welfare when Clinton was in the White House. Then Bush 43 gets in & first thing you know there is the first new entitlement in 25 years, Medicare Part D. $1.2 Trillion in costs over the first 10 years.
And as you say – “Once entitled ~ Always entitled”.

Pelosi dismisses Dem losses in Virginia and New Jersey
Most House Democrats tried to put a good face on Tuesday’s election results, saying they picked up two more votes for a sweeping health care bill that could be on the floor as early as Friday.
But it can’t make it any easier for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as she works to corral the last holdouts she needs to pass legislation overhauling the nation’s health care system.
Of course, the speaker, who told POLITICO recently she’s “not big on showing weakness,” brushed aside questions about how the Democratic gubernatorial losses in Virginia and New Jersey would impact her final tally and instead trumpeted the two special election House wins.
“From our perspective, we won last night,” the California Democrat told reporters during a Wednesday photo op. “We had one race that we were engaged in, it was in northern New York, it was a race where a Republican has held the seat since the Civil War. And we won that seat. So, from our standpoint, no, a candidate was victorious who supports health care reform, and his remarks last night said this was a victory for health care reform and other initiatives for the American people.”
“From our standpoint, we picked up votes last night,” a cheerful Pelosi said, “one in California and one in New York.”
