Night of the living public option

At Reason, Peter Suderman asks a good question: Why won’t the public option die?

And don’t start by telling me that it’s oh-so-popular and yet somehow Republicans have just scared too many people –including a number of Senate Democrats — about it. If the public option is so darn popular, why is Nancy Pelosi trying to rebrand it so that people think they’re getting something other than what we’ve been discussing for months?

If it’s so popular, why has President Obama remained non-committal about it all this time? The fact is that the hypothetical public option in which millions of Americans magically receive new health coverage from the insurance fairy is popular, but a public option in which people are specifically asked to help pay for other people’s new coverage is not. Thus Speaker Pelosi’s attempt at trickeration.

The new “opt-out” idea from Harry Reid, in which states could decide not to participate in the new federal government insurance plan, is cut from the same cloth as Pelosi’s maneuvering. If the point were to give states a true choice in the matter, an “opt-in” plan would be far more intellectually honest since the easiest thing for state politicians to do is to not to deviate from the default option that Washington gives them. But Reid’s point, of course, is to set a public option in motion while giving the appearance of flexibility. Don’t fall for it.

“Thus Speaker Pelosi’s attempt at t-t-trickeration.”

Thus Spake Stutter-palooza.

CNN just reported that this Halloween will be the first halloween where trick or treaters can say, “trick or tweet”, because if they don’t like the lousy candy you hand them, the word goes out on twitter, and your house could be “smart-TP’d” by mobs of sugar-gorged twitter followers, man.

So give the M+Ms, and don’t be so cheap. And tweet your congressman in support of a public option. Tweet often. Be polite. And be sure to use 25 words or less.

My understanding of the opt out plan is that states could opt out for the next four years, but the plan would still be paid for from general funds meaning citizens from these states would be paying for citizens in the states which remain in the plan.

Please let me know if I’m wrong. And don’t use the argument that the plan would be self sustaining. There are provisions for the government to pay all or part of the cost for those earning under $54,000 for a family of four. A bunch of tax dollars will be required.

No, jconservative, I’m saying just what I’m saying: that if you’re going to have a plan in which states get to decide whether to participate, opt-in is more of a real “option” than opt-out.

Kyle,

I just got my question answered. The illegitimate news network, FOX, just interviewed a democratic senator from Penn. The question asked him was what tax consideration would opt out states get in the bill. He stated there is no savings to those states, however after initial costs
to get the plan up and running, it should be self supporting.

This means there would be costs to the general fund to subsidize lower income people so they could afford the plan. This also means the opt out states would subsidize those who opt in. This in turn means opt out would be a stupid option for any state.

So, if the states could choose to “Opt In” rather than “Opt out”, you’d support it?

I don’t think I even understand what the difference would be, but fine.

I am happy that the Public Option is being included in this bill. If Georgia
“Opts out” then I can decide if I want to Opt out of Georgia to a state that chooses to provide health care for its citizens. I think its the best idea yet. Let the states be different. Completely different. Let Georgia be a state with low taxes, no government programs like social security or welfare, strict moral legislation, religious indoctrination in schools, and other things taht are popular here. Then otehr states can have their legal drugs, governmnet provided healthcare, gay marriage, and other things that are popular there.

Then, all we have to do is move to the state that best meets our desires.

Obama’s big change: He moves America to the Right

By: Byron York

As promised, Barack Obama is bringing change to America. He’s making it more Republican.

It’s not that more people are actually becoming Republicans or calling themselves Republicans — the number of voters who formally identify with the party is at its lowest point in years. But we appear to be in the early stages of a shift in which political independents, people who not too long ago were sick of Republicans, are now leaning toward GOP positions on some key issues.

They still call themselves independents, but they’re worried by the left-leaning policies of President Obama and the Democratic Congress, especially on the economy. “The middle, which wanted to move away from George W. Bush, did not want to move this far left,” says a Republican pollster who is tracking the shift. “They are tending to agree with what Republicans are saying more and more, despite the previous eight years.”

And who elected you God? Polls show that many people do.

I think that Reid is setting up the amendment from others (Snowe perhaps) for the trigger on the public option. Insurance companies are already acting like the banks in adjusting rates up before the banking and now the health care laws go into affect. This legislation would go into effect in 2013, plenty of time to see what the healthcare industry is up to. Constantly increasing rates with reduced coverage is what’s in store if nothing is done. Can’t you see that? We’re ranked 40th something in world healthcare still? I think conserves thought that we were NO 1!

And we cannot catch diseases from low income folks? Yeah, sure!

More bad news for Obama. If the former communist news is saying that we are moving to socialism……

America Moving from Kingdom of Cash to Socialism Slowly but Surely

Obama’s decision not to build the Missile Defense System in Poland and the Czech Republic and his Noble Prize have not yet been comprehended from a philosophical viewpoint. It’s time to do it.

Power of Money against Power of Spirit

The last turning point similar to the current one happened approximately 400 years ago. The Western European society discovered a new hierarchy of values. Feudalism that valued service and chivalry was replaced with capitalism. Wealth became the measure of success, and everyone was to care about his own pocket only. The cult of money replaced all other values, including religious.

The fact remains that politicians are trying to buy votes with OUR money. What in Hades name is the problem with taxpayers who seem to think they are not paying for everything the various governments provide. Understand that the parasitic citizens do not pay for the same services because they yearly pay no taxes directly and many actually receive funds provided by taxpayers for purchases. So why do liberals want to destroy the happiness of 70% of Americans to make the other 30% happy. Does that seem like a democratic thing to do? Whatever name you want ot put on this scheme from the Democrats the bottom line is it will effectively drive most private insurance companies out of business. It is targeted right at them. The government will always be able to undermine the cost simply by either operating at a loss for a while or increasing taxes, sorry the Dems word is fees, on everybody. As the private insurance companies go out of business more and more people join up on the government plan increasing costs which will force taxes to go up. It is a self defeating plan and is pretty much nothing more then a Ponzi scheme similar to what Bernie Madoff went to jail for and why Social Security is in trouble.

8 US troops die; new deadliest month in Afghan war

KABUL – Eight American troops were killed in two separate bomb attacks Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, making October the deadliest month of the war for U.S. forces since the 2001 invasion to oust the Taliban.

In one of the insurgent assaults, seven Americans were killed while patrolling in armored vehicles, U.S. forces spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Vician said. He said an Afghan civilian died in the same attack. The eighth American was killed in a separate bombing elsewhere in the south, also while patrolling in a military vehicle, he said.

The military issued a statement saying the deaths occurred during “multiple, complex” bomb strikes. It said several troops were wounded and evacuated to a nearby medical facility, but gave no other details.

Capt. Adam Weece, a spokesman for American forces in the south, said both attacks occurred in Kandahar province. In Washington, a U.S. defense official said at least one was followed by an intense firefight with insurgents who attacked after an initial bomb went off. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release the information.

The deaths bring to 55 the total number of American troops killed in October in Afghanistan. The previous high occurred in August, when 51 U.S. soldiers died and the troubled nation held the first round of its presidential election amid a wave of Taliban insurgent attacks.

The deadliest month of the Iraq conflict for U.S. forces was November 2004, when 137 Americans were killed during the assault to clear insurgents from the city of Fallujah.

“A loss like this is extremely difficult for the families as well as for those who served alongside these brave service members,” said Navy Capt. Jane Campbell, a military spokeswoman. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends who mourn their loss.”

The loss of life followed one of the worst days of the war for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since they launched air strikes in 2001 to oust the Taliban from power.

On Monday, a U.S. military helicopter crashed returning from the scene of a firefight with suspected Taliban drug traffickers in western Afghanistan, killing 10 Americans including three DEA agents. In a separate crash the same day, four more U.S. troops were killed when two helicopters collided over southern Afghanistan.

U.S. military officials insisted neither crash was the result of hostile fire, although the Taliban claimed they shot down a U.S. helicopter in the western province of Badghis. The U.S. did not say where in western Afghanistan its helicopter went down, and no other aircraft were reported missing.

Those casualties marked the Drug Enforcement Administration’s first deaths since it began operations here in 2005. Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of opium — the raw ingredient in heroin — and the illicit drug trade is a major source of funding for insurgent groups.

And, what does a real fake news show have to do with FOX NEWS?

Please provide facts that show FOX is not real news. And no, I don’t mean go and ask your boyfriend Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews.

If medicare is acknowledged as being one of the most efficient, and cost effective providers of health care, wouldn’t it stand to reason that a public option, styled on medicare, would likewise be cost effective?

I’m going to have to call a troll-coddling foul on Clyde Ringfelt today.

Today, Rush was ranting about obama’s deliberations concerning the surge in Afghanistan. “I will not ask you to risk your lives, unless it’s necessary”.

Rush cant ennunciate a mission for US troops in Afghanistan either. W couldn’t. Gates cant or wont, even though he’s former CIA director… Rumsfeld/Cheney – you’ve got to be kidding me.

There is no Afghan mission except to employ the defense industry. Capitalism doesn’t work without war.

Give our troops a mission. Somebody. Could it be that nobody knows what they’re talking about anymore? We just run our mouths, and we always threaten and cajole any dissent. If capitalism only works in wartime, then let’s start more wars and get Americans working again.

Somebody make a stand. The mission of US troops is to kill as many Afghan Scum as we possibly can…..WHAT?

Anybody want to take a shot at Iraq’s Strategic Mission? at long last?

Kyle, the reason the public option won’t die is simple. It is because in every creditable poll, more people are for it than against it. You can try to dismiss these polls as resulting from unrealistic beliefs of what the public option will or will not be, but that is pure conjecture on your part. You certainly are not claiming mind reading ability, are you? It seems a simpler and more reasonable guess would be that people are sick of being screwed over by insurance companies. With every passing day, more and more is revealed in the news of the slimy underbelly of the insurance industry. Why wouldn’t people want a system not motivated by naked greed?

The reason politicians don’t cater to the public will reflected in these poll results is because polls and public will don’t pay for re-election campaigns, dollars from insurance companies, big pharma, and for-profit healthcare do. Despite these dollars though, these entities can’t vote. Once a critical mass of public opinion is reached, where no amount of campaign funds can overcome it, the politicians will fall in line as well.

On the Today Show, former CIA covert ops agent Mike Baker said that the initial casualty estimates for our 2003 invasion of Iraq were “tens of thousands”, and he chided those estimates and the new ghastly estimates of our possible surge in Afghanistan. “The real casualty figures were way, way lower” in Iraq. Wow, he managed to diss our troop’s sacrifice in Iraq and hide behind the flag. It was appalling and shameful.

This contradicts Rush’s, “When will it be absolutely necessary? What about the troops in Afghanistan already dead? Who is it necessary for?” The Born Again Birthers contradict themselves because they spin every data point into their circular logic. “I’m Right, therefore I’m right.”

Rush is persuasive. We’re totally convinced. Lets surge in Afghanistan because he’s mugging on the radio. (People cant see those faces you make, Rush. You’re a radio star. I thought video keeled the radio star, but I guess that was too much ask of VH1)

Fox News just reported that the Saucer Mom has charged that Professional Wrestling is a fake. In an extended interview, Fox determined that the Saucer Mom also thinks David Blaine’s magic tricks are stupid and crude and easily explained. “He’s palming cards. He uses confederates and stooges. He’s editing video. He’s a fake. Word.”

No, I’m not saying that. As a matter of fact, I doubt very much there is any poll like that anywhere, nor will there ever be, because no credible pollster would ever ask such a rambling nonsensical question.

What I am saying is that it is not hard to understand why most people would rather have the option available to buy their insurance from the government for a reasonable rate, and have benefits managed based on research proven best medical practices, rather than shell out exorbitant sums to a corporation and yet still be denied coverage based on technicalities or pure randomness for the sake of corporate profits. Do you have a poll that say people would prefer the second scenario?

Dismantling America

By Thomas Sowell

Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many “czars” appointed by the President, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?

Did you think that another “czar” would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers– that is, to create a situation where some newspapers’ survival would depend on the government liking what they publish?

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/10/27/dismantling_america_98883.html

David Axelfraud

October 27th, 2009
5:07 pm

Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called “experts” deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments?

Scary as that is from a medical standpoint, it is also chilling from the standpoint of freedom. If you have a mother who needs a heart operation or a child with some dire medical condition, how free would you feel to speak out against an administration that has the power to make life and death decisions about your loved ones?

Does any of this sound like America?

How about a federal agency giving school children material to enlist them on the side of the president? Merely being assigned to sing his praises in class is apparently not enough.

How much of America would be left if the federal government continued on this path? President Obama has already floated the idea of a national police force, something we have done without for more than two centuries.

We already have local police forces all across the country and military forces for national defense, as well as the FBI for federal crimes and the National Guard for local emergencies. What would be the role of a national police force created by Barack Obama, with all its leaders appointed by him? It would seem more like the brown shirts of dictators than like anything American.

How far the President will go depends of course on how much resistance he meets. But the direction in which he is trying to go tells us more than all his rhetoric or media spin.

Saywhat, There is a thrift store in my little hometown that sells everything dirt cheap. Books are 10 cents & clothes (even formal gowns) are 25 cents. Residents have to practically give their items away @ yd sales.
There’s no way private health care co’s can compete with gov-run health care. Businesses can’t compete with govt., non-profits & charities.
The goal of the DC bunch is to put private insurance companies out of business & to socialize our health care, just like did with our financial system, 2 of our 3 auto makers, the largest insurance company in the world (AIG), Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, etc.
We had the best real estate financial system in the world & a great real estate market, but the govt. decided that home ownership was a right, not a privilege, & required the banks, savings & loans, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac (who bought loans from mortgage companies) to make loans to anyone who breathed. Our fed. gov’s philosophy of Affordable Housing caused a world-wide economic collapse.
Health care is already a right. Now, they’ve decided that health care insurance is a right, not a privilege.
The health care reform bill has nothing to do with health, care or reform. Medicare is ripe with fraud & will be bankrupt in 7 yrs. Americans don’t want to give up the best health care insurance system in the world for socialized health care, which is neither healthy or caring. The govt. will never reform tort as long as lawyers are in charge in DC. If this was really about insuring the uninsured, all they have to do is contract with insurance co’s for group rates for everyone, regardless of citizenship or pre-existing conditions. Just a few phone calls would do it. It would be cheaper for the govt. to buy all the uninsured insurance policies than to create these 53 new agencies & try to run it like the post office or the IRS.
Unfortunately, there’s no money to do either. Check debtclock.com. Our deficit already this year has quadrupled. We not only owe almost $12 T that we’ve borrowed but there’s another $106 T we owe but don’t have the money for, including $14 T in social security & $73.5 T in medicare that the govt. took from our paychecks but spent. We’ve indebted our great, great, great, great grandchildren & Cap & Trade/Tax has already passed the House. What money they haven’t borrowed, they’re just printing which will cause massive inflation. Our triple A credit rating will go down. In 3 yrs., our debt service will be equal to the income from taxes! We are close to bankruptcy. Our national security is at risk. We’re borrowing money from China who in turn sends us lead based toys & toxic baby formula & refuses to reign in N. Korea, & from countries that jack up the price of oil for you & me while ships are dumping it out in the ocean. They have us over a barrel, so to speak.
While I’m at it, the economic stimulus bill had nothing to do with the economy or stimulus. It made the economy worse. DC raised the minimum wage during the worse economic crisis in decades. Remember Econ 101? The people who are suffering the most from lack of health care is the middle class, average American taxpayers with pre-existing conditions. Rich people can buy health insurance. Poor people & illegals can go to emergency rooms & be hospitalized for free.
If the govt would just STOP, we would be better off. Stop the spending, stop the borrowing, stop printing, stop passing bills, stop the pork. Just go home for a few months & let the economy recover.
Allow companies to start hiring again so more people will have health care.

Kyle, I don’t mean to be disprectful, but Mr. Axelfraud’s writings are almost as good as yours. Don’t censor him. I just had my husband come down here to read some of this stuff & he was rolling in the floor, & since it’s my husband’s birthday, let’s allow Mr. Axelfraud to continue. Also, I think Mr. Axelfraud is kin to Neal Borsch. Doesn’t he sound like at least his third cousin? Neal gets paid for this kind of fun. Mr. Axelfraud has 2 college degrees. I don’t know if they were 2 different colleges or which one or ones they were, but he sounds smart enough to be a Conservative, maybe even a 3 o-clock one, you know, on a clock, that’s as far right as you can get. (I’m about 2 o’clock.) Thanks for your consideration for my request (& birthday boy).

Educating the masses is feared by those in power! If I’m educated and I am enlighten then no politician or leader can make me do what I don’t want to do.

We are an enlighten people. We have institutions of higher learning on every corner but yet when it comes to politics, we lose all sensibility.

We would never believe a lying, cheating, swindling person if they came to our door selling snake oil, but put a necktie on a person, call him a Harvard grad and we will believe anything he dishes out. That goes for Republican and\or Democrats.

People, stop your arguing, stop acting like you live in a third world nation and unite to take back the government. “We the people” Remember those word?

Knowledge is power!!!

Dear Peach Lover, If you think no politician can make you do what you don’t want to do, just wait until this DC bunch passes cap & trade & try to sell your house without bringing it up to their energy-efficient standards.
What gets me the most are seemingly intelligent people who buy organic foods & toxic “green” light bulbs & who believe politicians can alter the climate.

Linda,

Who said “How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.”? for this reason, multitudes will be deceived and never know it.

Don’t look on the surface for true meaning. Why do our leader want socialize health care? It’s not the health care, the answer lies beneath surface.

Never think that politicians are concerned about your well being when they allow millions to die daily by illegal imported drugs and then stand up to say they have declared war on drugs. The truth lies beneath the surface.

Our biggest fear should not be cap & trade, health care, climate or the economy but rather the politicians!!

Ask your elected officials to stop the “war” in Iraq and Afghan. Stop killing our young men and women!!! Bring them home!!

Peace Lover, I agree with you except for stopping the wars. One of the major differences between liberals & conservatives is peace thru appeasement vrs. peace thru strength. Radical muslims have been attacking & killing Americans since the ’70’s. Appeasement has not worked & never will. We all knew they wanted to blow up the World Trade Center because they had ALREADY tried in ‘93. It was just a matter of time before they tried again, which they did & succeeded. Our pres. & congress at the time declared a war on terrorism. Mistakes have been made & the strategy has become political, especially this year, even with the ban of calling it a war on terrorism which it still is.
Let me ask you this. If Islam terrorists from the Middle East had been killing Americans, especially servicemen & women, for 30 yrs. all over the Middle East & then came to the US & killed over 3000 more, what would you do? Is bringing our troops home the answer? Wouldn’t you sit down & try to analyze their motive & how to change it?
I don’t know the answers to the problems in the Middle East but it’s possible that bringing peace to Iraq, one of its largest countries & one with the most potential, surrounded by oppressed countries, could set an example & turn around the entire region.
Our military is comprised of volunteers, brave men & women who are fighting & dying for the freedoms our Constitution represents. They don’t WANT to come home without accomplishing their mission. Right now they don’t even know what their mission is.

The “public option” will NEVER die…even if it was completely removed from the current bill tomorrow. Once the government gets their proverbial foot in the hospital door, they will continue to find “injustices” and pass health care “remedies” until they have complete control.

Once they have control, freedom in this country will be nothing but a memory. After all, who is going to vote or speak out against the people in power when those same people have the authority to make your healthcare decisions…including whether you live or die (and how much you will suffer in the process).

ANSWER: The US Constitution.

Though some problems and shortcomings may exist, recipients under Canadian, British, US Medicare, US Veteran’s Healtcare and other govt healthcare programs like it and would never give it up. They would all argure that they are entitled to it. Of course no one is going to pick a fight with veterans or the elderly so “govt run health care is bad” falls flat. The truth is some people hate all entitlements and they will be darned if they are going to sit back and allow another, probably the biggest ever, to be created. To them entitlements are just socialist redistributions of wealth from the most productive to the least productive. The problem is that under the Constitution, the least productive get the same vote as the most productive. Why stop at secession threats? Viva la revolution!

America spends many times over what other industrialized countries spend on health care per capita. Our current health care system is bloated and inefficiant to the point of absurdity. The only way to create sustainable health care reform is to spend less money on it, less money that we currently do. Under such a reform plan, there will be less profit. Some business will fail. Others will be less profitable. Meaningful reform is the last thing “the health care industry” wants. The only chance of sustainable, meaningful reform is through a public option. That’s why, regardless of the fearmongering and propaganda to the contrary masquerading as “pro free enterprize”, the public option has not gone away.

States wouldn’t opt out. That fact that there is even an opt out clause is a ruse. It is to confuse those that aren’t really paying attention. It is sleight of hand. And Pelosi rebranding it doesn’t make it less of a govt ran healthcare.
Do not be fooled.

Users like free plans…providers do not. Medicare recipients on the whole really like their plans. Doctors do not. Why, you may ask. Because doctors on the whole are paid 40 cents on the dollar for Medicare filings. Not because Medicare does not provide a fair payment structure, but because they refuse to pay…regularly. If a doctor hires a consultant (read: former employee of The System), he or she may receive around 70 cents on the dollar.

If all the programs are “free” – by this I don’t mean just in costs, but no restrictions such as the ability to buy insurance once you are sick — the quality doctors will leave their practices like rats from a flood. People who spent the first 1/2 of their lives being trained and excelling against the best of the best, will not work for free. Enjoy your online degreed medical care.

Why is it then that despite free public education, there are thriving private schools throughout the country? Why is it that Federal Express, UPS, DHL, etc all exist despite the US Postal service? Most importantly, why do you care if private health insurance companies exist, if they prove to be obsolete or unable to compete? Are you shedding tears over the horse and buggie industry, the type writer industry, the companies that made ditto machines too?

but forgets to mention private insurance companies do the same thing, but more frequently and with less cause. Then, they rescind people from their rolls whom they determine might cost them more in benefits than they bring in premiums. Does Medicare do that?

Good point saywhat? however, with private companies there is recourse via the BBB or the Insurance Commission. Ask any doctor who has filed a complaint with their elected representatives against Medicare/Medicaid how that worked out for them.

And yes, saywhat? Medicare does…they don’t rescind the patient from care, they simply rescind the payments to the providers. In a big city, no problem for some time, in a small town…BIG PROBLEM.

The Godfather speaks. VDH

All Falling Down . . .

Obama’s mega-borrowing is predicated on a rather thin margin of safety. We can service nearly $2 trillion in additional debt this year—on top the of the existing $11 trillion—only because interest rates are so low.

But as a veteran of the near usury of the 1970s and early 1980s, I see no reason why interest rates won’t shoot up to 10% once the economy recovers and the U.S. has to convince lenders to buy our paper in an inflationary spiral. In other words, we could fork out each year about $150-200 billion in interest costs on our annual red ink, in addition to paying annually another trillion dollars to service the existing debt. (We forget that many of us young people in the 1970s and 1980s simply never bought anything new due to high interest: my first new car was not purchased until 1989 when interest was only 7.2% on it; my parents bought a small condo in 1980 for the unbelievably low rate of 8.8%, due only to redevelopment incentives in a bad neighborhood of Fresno. Inflation will be back, even in this quite different age of globalized competition and low wages.)

When Obama talks of a trillion here for health care, a trillion there for cap-and-trade, it has a chilling effect. Does he include the cost of interest? Where will the money came from? Who will pay the interest? Has he ever experienced the wages of such borrowing in his own life? Did he cut-back and save for his college or law school tuition, with part-time jobs? Did he ever run a business and see how hard it was to be $200 ahead at day’s end?

Saywhat, the reason we have private schools is because the government is inefficient & ineffective in almost everything it does. Private schools are considered to be superior in quality of education. Only rich & moderate-income people can afford them & receive no tax rebates. Only 11% of our children attend them.

The post office & the 3 carriers you mentioned are not in the same category. Since DHL, FedX & UPS don’t deliver our mail door to door, they are able to make a profit as global delivery companies. They are also more efficient & effective than the PO. The PO doesn’t even have its own aircraft. Although the PO has started to pick up packages, pickups are made only during normal mail delivery. Prior to that, customers had to wait in line at the PO. The delivery workers at the private companies are paid under an incentive program & don’t close their windows when it’s time for a break. DHL stopped all their domestic shipments 1/09 & laid off thousands of workers.

If there is socialized health care, there will still be a few private health care workers since the legislature, unions & federal employees will probably be exempt, allowing for the rich to also patronize them.

I think we should all care about our fellow Americans being able to keep their jobs. It’s sad when anyone looses a job, worse when a business goes under & devastating to our economy when almost an entire industry shuts down, especially when it’s replaced with more govt. bureaucracy. Personally I believe in capitalism & took an oath in my profession to preserve the free enterprise system.

PS The PO still uses typewriters & ditto machines but thankfully gave up the horse & buggies.

The opt-in plan is essentially how Canada did it. Following the success of the first universal health care plan in one of the provinces, the federal government offered to pay half of the cost (in a block grant) to any province putting together a plan for universal health care. Note that the federal government does not provide the plan itself, only the funding, leaving it up to the provinces to run their respective plans as they see fit.
