The main front for Americans trying to keep our government bound by some reasonable limits has been health care. And with good reason: The Democrats’ health plan would reorganize a giant swath of the economy and could be a tipping point for the size, scope and power of the federal bureaucracy.
But there are other examples of “feds know best” — and not only Democrats are guilty. Here are three from this week’s headlines.
First were the White House’s continuing attacks on Fox News. “Not really a news station” is how it was put by White House adviser David Axelrod, who is fast becoming exactly the kind of figure the left hated in Karl Rove.
It’s telling that the Obama administration hasn’t marshaled any evidence for its claim beyond pointing to the shows of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, which are expressly opinion content. This is just as absurd as saying the Washington Post isn’t a news organization because it publishes opinion columns by Eugene Robinson and E.J. Dionne.
Worse, though, is that the president’s top advisers think it’s their place to try to undermine any news organization.
Fighting back against specific stories or giving greater access to particular news outlets is fair game. But trying to sink a contrarian news organization’s credibility is wholly inappropriate for an administration that is supposed to enforce the nation’s laws, including, last I checked, the First Amendment.
It wouldn’t even matter if Fox News were broadcasting falsehoods 100 percent of the time, which of course it isn’t. It is no more the government’s place to decree, even rhetorically, the illegitimacy of a particular news outlet than it would be to announce that one religious belief is less true than another. Only a government unconcerned about limits on its own power and role would think otherwise.
Second was a story that dates back a couple of months but got national attention this week. The citizens of Kinston, N.C., voted in November by a 2-to-1 margin to make local elections nonpartisan. The U.S. Justice Department reviewed the change pursuant to the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Not only did Acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King rule in August that African-Americans were a minority in Kinston, a city where the population is estimated to be two-thirds black and where blacks represent 65 percent of registered voters. She rejected the referendum result on the grounds that whites would only vote for black candidates if they ran as Democrats.
Again, the most appalling thing here is not the sheer partisanship, nor the fact that King’s justifications pass for logic and justice in today’s Washington. It’s that an unelected bureaucrat would twist the facts of a case and overrule a voter decision that didn’t suit her. Only a government unconcerned with the limits on its own power and role would do such a thing.
Finally, there was the request by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch that the Obama administration look into college football’s Bowl Championship Series for possible antitrust violations. Hatch’s state is home to two schools, the University of Utah and BYU, whose conference champions aren’t guaranteed a spot in the lucrative BCS games.
But this is a situation that the market — here, the major football leagues and TV networks — has been addressing in recent years. Must the government be involved in every conflict? Do even self-professed conservatives like Hatch now subscribe to this idea?
It is the pervasiveness of the big-government mentality that is producing a backlash. It is about more than the big issues or partisanship. The movement against it has too much motivation to do anything but keep moving.

Kyle you almost had me feeling sorry for Fox until I saw how much they are loving this. It’s more that a little scary that like you a considerable percentage of the electorate considers what Fox does to be objective news reporting when they are #1 solely because of their far-right pandering machinery. What’s wrong with pointing that out? It may cause a few to seek a diversity of opinions and in doing so discover that they actually have one that is their own. Now don’t let the fact that that sounds Obama-ish stop you from experiencing a little personal growth and maturity!

Can you honestly say that Fox has not resorted to all manner of dishonesty in order to undermine the legitimacy of Obama’s presidency? When Fox becomes a responsible new outlet, maybe they’ll be treated as such. It is sweet that you guys rush to the defense of po’ wittle Foxy-woxy though.

Nice thoughtful column. Gives us readers something to chew on.
Would I be correct in saying you are less a conservative & more a Republican as far as political ID goes? That is the impression I get from my perspective as a political conservative but not a Republican.
The Fox/White House mutual name calling is not a big deal. Go back & look at the Nixon White House war on the NY Times, the Washington Post, & CBS. In fact, the Republicans have been at the throat of the NY Times since at least the Pentagon Papers publication. This White House/press war has been a recurring theme throughout US history.
You mention “big-government mentality”. And I would agree it has been running rampant through American political thought for the past 75 years. Everybody sees or perceives problems that they want the Federal government to fix. And way too much of the “big government solution” comes from the political right. For example: two hot button issues, same sex marriage & abortion, all have millions calling for a Federal government solution. (I am going to a meeting this AM & there will be a call for Congress to “fix the same sex marriage problem.”)
If I may be allowed to correct Bill Clinton – “the era of small government is, and has been, over”.

So can we expect criticism of republican policies when a republican is in office? Or are you to be just like every other “conservative” and give a free pass to every big government idea that comes from a republican?
We didn’t get to this point in america because libertarians have been in charge. We got here because republicans and democrats have been in charge. Even so-called “conservatives” have pushed for more power and more government.
There is no power the government can have and use in a manner that serves the public. The sooner americans realize that, the sooner we can all peacefully work towards dismantling our oppressor.

There have been instances where repub. administrations have cried foul over certain content reported by the media, but never have they used the office of President to declare an entire news network illigitment. This is clearly an abuse of power. I do watch Fox as well as other channels. As far as pure reporting of the news, which I would guess is at least 75% of their content, I would say there is not much difference. In almost every case where there is a discussion of issues, Fox has well known liberals appearing alongside conservatives. When it comes to opinion, Fox is clearly biased toward conservatism, just as MSNBC is clearly biased toward liberalism. So as far as I’m concerned if Fox is not a legitimate source of news, none of them are, and compared to historical standards, this may be the case.
I think this attack is purely revenge for Fox’s investigative reporting of ACORN. As the former lawyer for Acorn, Obama has close relations with many Acorn leaders, and I think this was a warning shot to warn any News organization against messing with his buddies. Remember the poor auditor in Sacramento who was fired for a bad report on Obama’s buddy.
The issues Kyle mentions today are abuses of power, but only a couple of many abuses by this admin. I personally think the handling of the bondholders in the GM takeover was the worst. The firing of the president of GM, even though it may have been warrented, was right up there as well, and was the first case in history where a president fired the head of a public company.
I predict this abuse will continue, and get worse as time passes. If you are on Obama’s enemy list, you will be harmed. I also predict that once repubs. are back in office, they will return this behavior in kind since the decency standard will have been lowered.

White House protestations against Fox News Channel would hold water if they were not pointing out to FNC’s OPINION shows. Their NEWS coverage is in my opinion, very good, and it doesn’t drip partisanship, as the ‘news’ coverage in MSNBC, CNN, and the other networks.
Now, the White House is walking in very thin ice here, and also giving FNC a ratings boost they do not really need as they are pounding everyone else to the ground as it is already. I think that if they look hard enough, they may be able to find other things in which to spend time more wisely.

The fair and balanced Fox news was the only network that did not air a major speech on
health care reform by President Obama. Fox news chose to keep their viewers dumb and
uninformed. Fair and Balanced should include the opinion of everyone, especially the
President of the United States. I am glad the White House is not dealing with Fox. They
will never be able to present an intelligent unbiased debate if they are only going to present
one side of the argument. Instead of their slogan being “fair and balanced,” it should be
“Fox news, for the dumb, racist and uninformed. Our ratings are high because we are the

Americans are free to watch whatever news channel they prefer (at least for now) & viewers choose to watch Fox more than all the others combined. Fox interviews as many Democrats as Republicans & as many liberals as conservatives. Fox has only 2 opinion-based shows: Beck & Hannity. Hannity’s panel almost always has at least one liberal.
Fox didn’t show O’s major speech on health care reform because we’ve all heard it over & over again for months & it has nothing to do with health, care or reform.
The White House has no business “dealing” with any news stations.

The attack against Fox News this week also included the first time in US history that a president banned an entire network from the White House Press Pool by refusing interviews with officials. The Pool consists of only 5 members: ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox & NBC, organized by the independent White House Correspondents Association which sponsors the costs. The other 4 members realized the absurdity of this attempt to ostracize one of their affiliates & probably the magnitude of the consequences. They have different perspectives but agree on free speech & free press. Admirably, they refused to interview unless Fox was included. The White House relented but reduced the interviews from 5 to 2 minutes each, as retaliation.
Trying to undermine, delegitimize & demonize a major news organization is shameful & reveals intimidation & desperation on the part of the WH. The principals & actions of the Press Pool are commendable.

Hi Kyle,
Some especially good cherry picking with regards to Fox.
We both know that Fox is bent on undermining Obama, and that such a mindset is much different thing than actual reporting on an Administration. How could anyone possibly consider the cheerleading that Fox did on behalf of the “tea parties” objective? What if CBS news had orchestrated some faux citizen protests over the Bush Administration’s questionable invasion of a soverign country, then covered those events like a news story? I think Cheney would have gone down there with a gun hisownself.
I’m in agreement with those who think that the President should not have engaged Fox on this matter. But that’s more because the President shouldn’t give them the credit of the debate. There’s really no debate that they’re not a credible news source.
.
What a joke that station is. Their whole editorial principle is based on the old “have you stopped beating your wife” tactic to produce a sensational headline: President Obama Denies That He Has Stopped Beating His Wife. And then Hannity and Beck have something to talk about.
They’re the TMZ if political news.

Audrey, when you say “Fox” disrespects the president, who specifically are you referring to? During the week, there are 10 shows with at least 15 anchors & hundreds of commentators & guests, half of them liberals & Democrats. Who at or on Fox is disrespecting the president? When you say “no one” should be subjected to that type of behavior, who specifically are you referring to, the president or Fox viewers? Rather than “no one” being subjected to that type of behavior, just what did you have in mind? What about free speech & remote controls? Fox does not need to turn over any graves but just observe the woodwork to see what’s coming out. The real questions are: is Fox disrespecting the president or is the president disrespecting the presidency AND is Fox attempting to discredit the president or is the president discrediting himself, his presidency & his promises to the American people?

Has anyone realized the hate and venom which not only is on this blog, but is displayed on the all day news (and I use this term loosely) networks? The intensity of the volume (and using capital letters in your written response) does not mean your response is more intelligent or accurate! No manners, insults, asking a question and then cutting off the responder after a few words, etc. are not a sign of righteousness or correctness! They are a sign of disrespect and stupidity! This goes for both sides.
Are the hosts so worried that someone may think about what is to be said, versus the shock treatment shoved back down their throats? This goes for Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh as well as Oberman, Chris Mathews, and others. While I may not agree with Maddow, she at least has facts and thoughtful questions where she allows the guest (conserve or liberal) to respond.
Yeah, Fox has liberals on, but they rarely allow them to explain their position or thoughts/concerns that they may have. Beck is a melodramatic jerk whose show reminds me of a bad soap opera. Emotion no; pandering yes.

Must the government be involved in every conflict?
The short answer is, NO!
When governance is at its’ best, government should have few conflicts to resolve.
Do even self-professed conservatives like Hatch now subscribe to this idea?
Can’t speak for Senator Hatch but I will say he is wrong.
Kyle, the question you didn’t ask that I believe you should have posed in your blog is the same one essentially asked of President Obama in an ABC interview:
Who determines what is the news or newsworthy?
It certainly isn’t Mr. Obama and those around him nor is it the function of government to say what news is or what the news shall be and what entity or entities shall report it.
Clearly Mr. Obama and his administration have crossed the constitutional line on this one. Rightly, even news outlets considered as liberal have stepped up to the plate – to their credit – in defense of the freedom of the press and the freedom of speech.
It is seldom I have anything kind to say about the liberal media. However, in this evolving case, they have EARNED RESPECTABILITY. Something our President and those of his administration should take special note of in their attempts to depose of their critics and so-called opponents.
It was obvious, at least to me, Bush and those of his administration showed a similar practice of avoiding parts of the press and media that did not favor them. However, even Bush did not go so far as this President and those under him have now gone to muzzle opposing speech and violate the first amendment of the Constitution.
Only the office of the Presidency deserves unmerited respect, a respect for the President MUST BE EARNED!
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
~ Theodore Roosevelt

Now some of you are saying this is not really news worthy, but I recall when the left and the main stream media had so demonized the oil industry that Bush’s association with oil exectutives was worthy of wide spread coverage.

Wow. A lot of hate on this blog. A lot of people from both sides cannot debate without spewing hate.
Re the Fox/White House issue – (is it serious enough to be called an issue?). Fox has a remedy if they feel their 1st Am rights are being violated. I would think they feel the publicity is worth more than the loss of an interview, etc.
Fox has one problem that hurts it in the discussion with the White House. They have about 4 to 4.5 million viewers form their top shows.
The three broadcast news programs get a total of about 24 million viewers daily for their PM news shows. This leaves Fox with very little muscle. But if News Corp does in fact buy NBC Universal it would give News Corp a lot of muscle with any White House.

If the BCS were not controlled by such a few people who control the events for personal profits, for their conference, for absolute power over college football, and for announcing a so called legitimate national champion, I would think the government should stay out of private business. However this is not a private business since there are government funds involved. Just like religion in the eyes of the liberals, if one dollar of government funds is involved then you can not have the religion in government public places. You can not have it both ways. The BCS is a sham and is preventing other schools from participating and receiving huge funds. I thought everyone is for everybody to have EQUAL OPPORTUNITY or access.
As for as Fox News, I will watch it until I die. I also watch some CNN. I rather have Fox news than Obama or Cynthia Tucker….what a pair! I get a better representation of whats happening with Fox News. Did not the liberal media get Obama elected? I call that absolute power!

When Fox news ACTS like a news organization, they will get treated like one. Fox has nutjob pundits spout absolute nonsense, feeds the BS to Republican politicians as talking points who then repeat the nonsense, allowing Fox to then “cover the story” of this nonsense as if it were really news, and not something they made up in the first place.
There is absolutely no abuse of power by the Obama administration over this one. If the Obama adminstration threatened to arrest reporters, or applied IRS pressure on a news organization, or planted “defense experts” willing to speak only administration talking points on all the networks like a certain previous administration, yes, that would be an abuse of power. Calling BS on a group of liars, not at all. Letting fox get away with repeated unchallenged lies lends the lies a semblance of truth. Better to discredit the whole rotten organization with one preemptive strike.I’m fairly certain thats within Obama’s 1st amendment rights.

Re the media in general/White House issue has been put to rest by the media itself in having served notice to Obama and Company that they of the media are not willing to play ball by White House established rules. Meanwhile Fox News becomes more powerful and profitable all to Obama’s chagrin in his administration’s having crossed constitutional lines of protected freedoms of the press and of speech, as the rest of the nation becomes better informed the more Fox exposes this “unsavory bunch” now in and surrounding White House power. Which is probably more damaging to have the court of public opinion rule against Obama and Company than if the Supreme Court had ruled against it unanimously in a first amendment case.
Quite simply: Barrack Hussein Obama and Company, “done stepped in it”.

Hey Jliberal, your fellow mindless Obamabots on the libtard left have FAILED to explain why the RAT party is after Fox News. Go ahead, bedwet that it’s not real news. We really don’t care. Not anymore than you people on the left and what you think is real “news” from CNN, MSNBC, and the New York Times.
Now that we got a little reality out of the way as per usual from liberal land, let’s see what else is going on:
“A poll released over the weekend shows that only 34 percent of Californians approve of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) job performance, down 14 points from March.”
Uh huh, got moonbat?
“TEL AVIV – President Obama’s presidential campaign focused on “making” the news media cover certain issues while rarely communicating anything to the press unless it was “controlled,” White House Communications Director Anita Dunn disclosed to the Dominican government at a videotaped conference. “We just put that out there and made them write what Plouffe had said as opposed to Plouffe doing an interview with a reporter. So it was very much we controlled it as opposed to the press controlled it,” Dunn said.”
Yeah, but make sure you mindless liberal goons go after Fox News dammit!
“WASHINGTON (AP) – What is $1.42 trillion? It’s more than the total national debt for the first 200 years of the Republic, more than the entire economy of India, almost as much as Canada’s, and more than $4,700 for every man, woman and child in the United States. It’s the federal budget deficit for 2009, more than three times the most red ink ever amassed in a single year.”
Somehow the Chicago political machine will spin this in to Bush’s fault. Bank on it.
“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday new estimates showed a healthcare overhaul drafted by Democrats would reduce the U.S. budget deficit over 10 years and cost less than $900 billion.”
Who ya gonna believe, a San Francisco moonbat or the CBO?
“Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) locked Republicans out of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee room to keep them from meeting when Democrats aren’t present.”
So much for the promise of an open door policy, eh liberals?
“The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove.”
Not that this president has given the nation anything to believe in other than teleprompter- driven words, right? Right.
I’ll let the Chicago Sun Times say what Obama’s pal, CNN, won’t. Aren’t you glad 47 out of 50 states have had nothing but job LOSSES since that BS “stimulus” package was ramrodded through in such a hurry to curtail said job losses? At least that’s what the left told us:
You’d think it’s October 2008, the final month in the Obama presidential candidacy, rather than October 2009, nine months into the Obama presidency. Yet the Obama White House is in full campaign mode — maybe because it needs to mask the shortcomings of the Obama presidency.
Take, for example, all the talk of inheriting the worst economy since the 1930s crisis. That came in response to the news that the federal deficit hit $1.4 trillion.
Yet just a few months ago, the Obama camp was singing a little different tune. It was under criticism for the $787 billion stimulus package it bulldozed through Congress on grounds that massive spending was needed to keep the unemployment rate from breaching 8 percent. When joblessness hit 9.5 percent in June, Vice President Joe Biden said, “We misread how bad the economy was.”

Dear Farce, You forgot a few numbers.
$1.42 trillion dollars is the ‘09 deficit (how much more the DC bunch is spending over what they tax us for). This will be added to the almost $12 trillion debt we already have, most of which we borrowed from countries that don’t like us very much, one that reciprocates by sending us lead toys & toxic baby formula, & others who hike up the oil we buy from them because we’re too stupid to drill our own oil. This also does not include the $14 trillion dollars the American people paid to the fed. govt. for their social security which the govt. spent on pet projects. This also does not include the $18 1/2 trillions dollars for the prescription drug program which was unfunded. This also does not include the $73 trillion in medicare liability the American people paid which the govt. also did not place into a secure fund but also spent on pet projects. These last 3 add up to $73 trillion in unfunded liabilities. On top of this $119 trillion that our great, great, great, great grandchildren will have to worry about, they’re getting ready to spend maybe another $2 trillion to socialize our health care system & trillions more to implement Cap & Trade/Tax.
Up until now, only American TAXPAYERS (1/3 of Americans) were concerned about the inevitable tax hikes soon to come. When seniors find out there is no $ for social security or Medicare, there will be hell to pay. Medicare will be bankrupt in 7 yrs. The real problem is that the DC bunch spent even more money than they borrowed. They said, “Let’s just print some!” With no gold to back it up, sky-high inflation is just around the corner. When the price of food, clothing, shelter & transportation doubles, even the folks who don’t pay taxes will suffer.
We know there’s states that are insolvent, but few Americans really understand how much financial trouble our fed. govt. is in. Many Americans are depending on the fed. govt. to take care of their financial costs & health care costs in their golden years & are behind this socialized health care bill. If they only knew what is in store for them…….

Well libs, explain this………
PRESIDENT OBAMA TIES BUSH ON GOLF.
President Barack Obama has only been in office for just over nine months, but he’s already hit the links as much as President Bush did in over two years.
CBS’ Mark Knoller — an unofficial documentarian and statistician of all things White House-related — wrote on his Twitter feed that, “Today – Obama ties Pres. Bush in the number of rounds of golf played in office: 24.
Took Bush 2 yrs & 10 months.”
This news comes on the heels of today’s news that Obama played golf with a woman — chief domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes — for the first time since taking office.

Conservatives Maintain Edge as Top Ideological Group
Compared with 2008, more Americans “conservative” in general, and on issues
PRINCETON, NJ — Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group.

KABUL (AP) – A helicopter crash and separate collision involving two other choppers killed 14 Americans on Monday in one of the deadliest days for U.S. troops in the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.
In the first crash, a helicopter went down in the west of the country after leaving the scene of a firefight with insurgents, killing 10 Americans – seven troops and three civilians working for the government. Eleven American troops, one U.S. civilian and 14 Afghans were also injured.

That’s only because there’s never been a concerted effort by top politicians on the left to besmirch the term “conservative.”
Had they spent even 1/5th the effort every Republican and every wanking little right wing radio/print/TeeVee/Interweb pundit has put into demonizing the term “liberal” over the past coupla decades, that result would be different.

Annita Dunn: “My two favorite philosophers are Mao Tse-Tung and Mother Teresa.” “You’re going to make choices, you’re going to challenge, you’re going to say why not. You’re going to figure out how to do things that have never been done before. But here’s the deal, these are your choices, they’re no one else’s. In 1947, when Mao Tse Tung was being challenged within his own party on his plan to basically take China over – Chiang Kai Shek and the nationalist Chinese held the cities, they had the army, they had the air force, they had everything on their side, and people said how can you win, how can you do this, how can you do this against all of the odds against you, and Mao Tse Tung said: ‘you’ll fight your war and I’ll fight mine’.
Van Jones (Obama Green Jobs Czar) “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.”

Regardless of the method employed, I still see this as an assault on the First Amendment.
Elimination of free speech is a method historically employed by despots to gain absolute power, presently exhibited by countries such as China, Russia, and Cuba, hence the comparison to Communism.
