Power needs to have limits
The main front for Americans trying to keep our government bound by some reasonable limits has been health care. And with good reason: The Democrats’ health plan would reorganize a giant swath of the economy and could be a tipping point for the size, scope and power of the federal bureaucracy.
But there are other examples of “feds know best” — and not only Democrats are guilty. Here are three from this week’s headlines.
First were the White House’s continuing attacks on Fox News. “Not really a news station” is how it was put by White House adviser David Axelrod, who is fast becoming exactly the kind of figure the left hated in Karl Rove.
It’s telling that the Obama administration hasn’t marshaled any evidence for its claim beyond pointing to the shows of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, which are expressly opinion content. This is just as absurd as saying the Washington Post isn’t a news organization because it publishes opinion columns by Eugene Robinson and E.J. Dionne.
Worse, though, is that the president’s top advisers think it’s their place to try to undermine any news organization.
Fighting back against specific stories or giving greater access to particular news outlets is fair game. But trying to sink a contrarian news organization’s credibility is wholly inappropriate for an administration that is supposed to enforce the nation’s laws, including, last I checked, the First Amendment.
It wouldn’t even matter if Fox News were broadcasting falsehoods 100 percent of the time, which of course it isn’t. It is no more the government’s place to decree, even rhetorically, the illegitimacy of a particular news outlet than it would be to announce that one religious belief is less true than another. Only a government unconcerned about limits on its own power and role would think otherwise.
Second was a story that dates back a couple of months but got national attention this week. The citizens of Kinston, N.C., voted in November by a 2-to-1 margin to make local elections nonpartisan. The U.S. Justice Department reviewed the change pursuant to the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Not only did Acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King rule in August that African-Americans were a minority in Kinston, a city where the population is estimated to be two-thirds black and where blacks represent 65 percent of registered voters. She rejected the referendum result on the grounds that whites would only vote for black candidates if they ran as Democrats.
Again, the most appalling thing here is not the sheer partisanship, nor the fact that King’s justifications pass for logic and justice in today’s Washington. It’s that an unelected bureaucrat would twist the facts of a case and overrule a voter decision that didn’t suit her. Only a government unconcerned with the limits on its own power and role would do such a thing.
Finally, there was the request by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch that the Obama administration look into college football’s Bowl Championship Series for possible antitrust violations. Hatch’s state is home to two schools, the University of Utah and BYU, whose conference champions aren’t guaranteed a spot in the lucrative BCS games.
But this is a situation that the market — here, the major football leagues and TV networks — has been addressing in recent years. Must the government be involved in every conflict? Do even self-professed conservatives like Hatch now subscribe to this idea?
It is the pervasiveness of the big-government mentality that is producing a backlash. It is about more than the big issues or partisanship. The movement against it has too much motivation to do anything but keep moving.

Wow. A lot of hate on this blog. A lot of people from both sides cannot debate without spewing hate.
Re the Fox/White House issue – (is it serious enough to be called an issue?). Fox has a remedy if they feel their 1st Am rights are being violated. I would think they feel the publicity is worth more than the loss of an interview, etc.
Fox has one problem that hurts it in the discussion with the White House. They have about 4 to 4.5 million viewers form their top shows.
The three broadcast news programs get a total of about 24 million viewers daily for their PM news shows. This leaves Fox with very little muscle. But if News Corp does in fact buy NBC Universal it would give News Corp a lot of muscle with any White House.

If the BCS were not controlled by such a few people who control the events for personal profits, for their conference, for absolute power over college football, and for announcing a so called legitimate national champion, I would think the government should stay out of private business. However this is not a private business since there are government funds involved. Just like religion in the eyes of the liberals, if one dollar of government funds is involved then you can not have the religion in government public places. You can not have it both ways. The BCS is a sham and is preventing other schools from participating and receiving huge funds. I thought everyone is for everybody to have EQUAL OPPORTUNITY or access.
As for as Fox News, I will watch it until I die. I also watch some CNN. I rather have Fox news than Obama or Cynthia Tucker….what a pair! I get a better representation of whats happening with Fox News. Did not the liberal media get Obama elected? I call that absolute power!

When Fox news ACTS like a news organization, they will get treated like one. Fox has nutjob pundits spout absolute nonsense, feeds the BS to Republican politicians as talking points who then repeat the nonsense, allowing Fox to then “cover the story” of this nonsense as if it were really news, and not something they made up in the first place.
There is absolutely no abuse of power by the Obama administration over this one. If the Obama adminstration threatened to arrest reporters, or applied IRS pressure on a news organization, or planted “defense experts” willing to speak only administration talking points on all the networks like a certain previous administration, yes, that would be an abuse of power. Calling BS on a group of liars, not at all. Letting fox get away with repeated unchallenged lies lends the lies a semblance of truth. Better to discredit the whole rotten organization with one preemptive strike.I’m fairly certain thats within Obama’s 1st amendment rights.

Re the media in general/White House issue has been put to rest by the media itself in having served notice to Obama and Company that they of the media are not willing to play ball by White House established rules. Meanwhile Fox News becomes more powerful and profitable all to Obama’s chagrin in his administration’s having crossed constitutional lines of protected freedoms of the press and of speech, as the rest of the nation becomes better informed the more Fox exposes this “unsavory bunch” now in and surrounding White House power. Which is probably more damaging to have the court of public opinion rule against Obama and Company than if the Supreme Court had ruled against it unanimously in a first amendment case.

Dear Farce, You forgot a few numbers.
$1.42 trillion dollars is the ‘09 deficit (how much more the DC bunch is spending over what they tax us for). This will be added to the almost $12 trillion debt we already have, most of which we borrowed from countries that don’t like us very much, one that reciprocates by sending us lead toys & toxic baby formula, & others who hike up the oil we buy from them because we’re too stupid to drill our own oil. This also does not include the $14 trillion dollars the American people paid to the fed. govt. for their social security which the govt. spent on pet projects. This also does not include the $18 1/2 trillions dollars for the prescription drug program which was unfunded. This also does not include the $73 trillion in medicare liability the American people paid which the govt. also did not place into a secure fund but also spent on pet projects. These last 3 add up to $73 trillion in unfunded liabilities. On top of this $119 trillion that our great, great, great, great grandchildren will have to worry about, they’re getting ready to spend maybe another $2 trillion to socialize our health care system & trillions more to implement Cap & Trade/Tax.
Up until now, only American TAXPAYERS (1/3 of Americans) were concerned about the inevitable tax hikes soon to come. When seniors find out there is no $ for social security or Medicare, there will be hell to pay. Medicare will be bankrupt in 7 yrs. The real problem is that the DC bunch spent even more money than they borrowed. They said, “Let’s just print some!” With no gold to back it up, sky-high inflation is just around the corner. When the price of food, clothing, shelter & transportation doubles, even the folks who don’t pay taxes will suffer.
We know there’s states that are insolvent, but few Americans really understand how much financial trouble our fed. govt. is in. Many Americans are depending on the fed. govt. to take care of their financial costs & health care costs in their golden years & are behind this socialized health care bill. If they only knew what is in store for them…….

KABUL (AP) – A helicopter crash and separate collision involving two other choppers killed 14 Americans on Monday in one of the deadliest days for U.S. troops in the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.

One: I was commenting on someone else’s comment about lies that reporters spread.
Two: Fox News has not had to retract anything because no one at Fox has been accused of lying.

DannyX: No, Obama did not propose a law abolishing free speech – to do so would provoke an immediate and visceral reaction, and would be very stupid on his part. However, the efforts of the White House to demonize Fox News (based solely on two opinion shows on the network) indicate both intent and willingness to eliminate any dissenting voices by any means necessary. Regardless of the method employed, I still see this as an assault on the First Amendment.

4: Europe not listening to him like he said they would.

As I stated above every single politician has an issue with a news organization at some time. Every single one. Governor Perdue has done the EXACT SAME THING. He hates the AJC, and has been very vocal about it. Do some research.
