Bill King is an Athens native and a graduate of the University of Georgia. A lifelong Bulldogs fan, he sold programs at Sanford Stadium as a teen and has been a football season ticket holder since leaving school. His favorite Dawgs include Fran Tarkenton, Lynn Hughes, Andy Johnson (an Athens High School classmate), Herschel Walker (of course), Hines Ward, David Greene and Mohamed Massaquoi. His favorite coach (to date): Vince Dooley. He has worked at the AJC since college and spent 10 years as the Constitution’s rock music critic before moving into copy editing on the old afternoon Journal. In addition to blogging, he’s now a story editor. He’s married to Leslie, another UGA grad, and has two kids, Bill (who has two degrees from UGA) and Olivia, now a student at UGA. He’s the AJC’s resident Beatles expert and also enjoys “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Mad Men,” “Sherlock,” Al Green, Coldplay (and British rock in general, past and present), R.E.M., Kate Winslet and Dave Letterman.

Bill Don’t know what year you were selling programs at Sanford Stadium, but from the looks of your photo I was inside the Stadium at the same time being an usher. Once we got everybody seated that needed help finding their seat we were allowed to sit in the isles and watch the games. Poss’s BBQ used to cater the games so not only did we get to watch the game for free, we got a free lunch also. That was in the early 70’s. Ushered for 7 years and have had season tickets ever since. Not a better place to be than Athens on Gameday.

Bill,
I enjoy your posts and especially enjoy the responses from the other schools. I really enjoy the envy. Nobody posts on the Tech site. And I checked out an Auburn site on the Montgomery Advertiser the other day and it was just boring, nobody was saying anything, which shouldn’t surprise anyone, I don’t think they’ve mastered the whole subject/verb agreement thing. I mean more Alabama people post on your site than the Auburn sites.
I knew your brother, Jon, when we were Redcoats together. I marched for four years and helped with the Props Crew for two more. Game day mornings were early for the Props Crew; we had to move everything to the practice field for an 8:00 practice and then move everything back to the stadium for the game, which meant getting to the bandroom by 6:00 and we would have doughnuts or something. The Georgettes look a little different at 8:00 as compared to kickoff, but they always put on a good show and they always looked good at halftime. They still do. Jon was never the prankster, but I was. We would play a telephone game a 6:00 in the morning called “Fire Up Man,” and anybody in the phone book or the student locator was a potential victim. I think we called Fred Davison one time, somebody got his number, I don’t remember, but it was a gameday fire up, just to make sure every body was on board for the game.
As a child, we would leave South Georgia (capitalized for a reason) before sunrise on a Saturday morning; in the ’60’s all the games started at 2:00, I think, maybe 1:30 and we’d eat lunch before the game at the old Krystal on Baxter and my father (’51) would tell war stories about Wally Butts and Dean Tate. I remember when the Redcoats played under the upper-deck-overhang and Dooley later moved them down to the field to be closer to the field. My father was never a football fan and my mother went to a Women’s college (captialized for a reason) and she didn’t get football either, but we always had fun in Athens. I remember Poss’ too. Oh gosh, what about Charlie Williams, after a game. What’s better than that????
It was good seeing a post from Jeff Lewis. Talk about a blast from the past. I saw him in The Man of LaMancha at the old Fine Arts Building. He was good actor, but he was a good linebacker, too and I think he rattled a few jaws around. What do they call them now…..a student athlete? Thanks for the memories Jeff, on the field and on the stage. And I think the production was scheduled for Florida week and they had an understudy to do Jeff’s part over the weekend while he was in Jacksonville; I might be wrong. But I’m sure the ‘Dogs won.

Bill, what do you think about this idea?
If the UGA football team wants to wear the black jersey, there needs to be a REQUIREMENT regarding its use. DEFEND ITS INTEGRITY! There should be no limit as to how many times it can be worn during the season,
but it MUST REMAIN UNDEFEATED!
If they keep it undefeated, like the 2007 team did, they get to take it home with them when the season is over. If they fail to keep it undefeated, that seasons black jerseys are to be OFFICIALLY BURNED!!! I think that this would inspire a team commitment to excellence while insuring that the only UGA Black Jerseys IN EXISTENCE
are UNDEFEATED. Can you imagine what kind of bid, at auction, one of these
UNDEFEATED jerseys might bring a few years down the road?
It’s not too late to start this new Tradition. The black jerseys that they wore for the
G-Day game, this past April, are the ones they wore against Alabama in 2008. We
still have time to burn that issue out of existence.
If you think this idea has any merit, Do you have the ability to forward it on to
Coach Richt for his consideration?

Bill,
I love your article and went back and read your original one. Talking to you all these Sundays and I never knew you worked for AJC. I agree with you about Herschel. His record was set in less time and with the bowl games not counting you just can’t compare apples with oranges. He is still one classy guy. He and I were friends in college–I was the tutor and he was the student alone with many of the other players. I still bleed red and black. The old days with Vince and Erk were great. I do have my favorites still–A. Johnson, Jimmy Poulos, Allan Levitt, Don Golden, Ashley Madray, Jim Griffith, Terry Hoage (my old lab partner), David Greene, Ray Goff, Hilton Young, Bill Krug, Phil and Warren Gray, Moonpie, Superfrog, The Termite, and so many more that brought me memories I will never forget. I to can’t bring myself to like the other school in Georgia. In fact I can’t bring myself to even wear yellow and black when it isn’t football season. I have been a season ticket holder for 33 years. Started when I was a student and have continued.

Tebow thanked the Florida fans still in the Dome last night at the end even though it was pretty clear in the 4th quarter that Alabama would win. Reminds me of the UGA fans exodus while the game was still in doubt at UGA vs. Kentucky. Bill you should write something about UGA fans need to hang in there and support the team -we are the 12th man

Kyle was dead on about Erk….you should get Barnhardt involved in that campaign – he has (with all due respect to you, Mark and Jeff) the louest voice out of the AJC from a regional and national perspective. Erk’s National Championship and SEC titles as a coordinator should count for something! Hell, how many other Coaches have you seen with bloody bald heads from firing up their players….any other bloody heads on coaches came from bottles getting busted on their heads for losing ball games.

Bill,
I am surprised you have not even mentioned the name Dennis Hughes. In one year he played every position on the offensive side of the ball with the exception of center. Having posed the question to several Georgia assistants over the years, they all said Dennis was the best all around athlete they ever coached. I nominate Dennis Hughes.

Bill, I was wondering if you could help me out? After the 1980 championship, a record (vinyl) came out about Herschel Walker and the win over Notre Dame. It was to the tune of “The Devil went down to Georgia.” I don’t know if Charlie Daniels Band performed that or not, but I used to listen to it growing up. Unfortunately, the record was destroyed in a house fire and I haven’t been able to find it online or anywhere else. Do you remember that song and where can I find it?
Thanks,
John
