At least we won’t have any Grantham-on-the-hot-seat talk next season!

Todd Grantham is on his way to Louisville. (AJC file)

Todd Grantham is on his way to Louisville. (AJC file)

You’ve probably seen that UGA has confirmed reports that Todd Grantham is leaving to take the defensive coordinator’s job under Bobby Petrino at Louisville. The words “getting while the getting’s good” immediately come to mind.

Lots of speculation on possible replacements, with former Texas DC Manny Diaz mentioned by a lot of folks. I just hope the search doesn’t drag out like it did when Grantham was hired. With signing day for recruits less than a month away, having someone already on board would be a big plus.

And at least other schools won’t be able to continue telling recruits, “Well, you know Grantham’s likely to be gone next year anyway.”

So, feel free to celebrate, vent, speculate, whatever …

Bear Bryant always said the two most important things in football have not changed: blocking and tackling.
They still have not changed; both are just as important. Both areas are our weakest. Remember, folks, while we are (rightfully) glad CTG is gone, our o-line is middle-of-the-pack on a good day. We need to address that situation as well, and it starts with recruiting. We have fallen behind our SEC breatheren in recruiting o-linemen, and it has shown. Nebraska definitely showed us. We put those points on the board this season by fair at best o-line play and extremely good (at times) skill-player play.
We need a fresh start on defense. We need better recruits on the o-line. Per B.Bryant: “Blocking and tackling!” That part ain’t changed, folks!

Bear could take his players and beat yours or take your players and beat his. And he adapted his schemes to fit his players

even though he had a loaded deck, Gene Chizik has one thing Mark Richt doesn’t have….and you can laugh and say he doesn’t have a job, but he does have one of those shiny national championship rings….

old dog January 13th, 2014 5:08 pm – I am curious as to why people keep saying that both of our lines are the weak spots on our team. The O-line was not very consistent… that is obvious. But our D-line played very well this year and we had lots of different guys playing. They were the strength of the defense. So why the criticism of the D-line?

The o-line

2012, Georgia gave up 29 sacks, ranking it ninth in the SEC in pass protection.
2011, Georgia gave up 33 sacks, ranking eighth in the SEC and 85th nationally.
2010, Georgia gave up 24 sacks, ranking seventh in the SEC and 62nd nationally.”

Mason was sacked 3 times in the Nebraska game; he was sacked 8 times in the 2 1/2 games he played

The d-line did play better I will say

I wouldn’t say the O-line is bad. They were inconsistent… how do you go from dominating SC for the final 8 1/2 minutes of the game to getting harried mercilessly by Vandy? And then turn around and do the same thing to UF for the final 8 1/2+ minutes of that game? Our LT has to be shored up and our backs have to attack incoming rushers instead of trying to just get in their way. Lynch whiffed a couple of times too.

The Galliard kid is said to have gotten tubby this season but if they get him trimmed down and in shape he is supposed to have the best explosion of any of the defensive linemen in this year’s class.

the trick here is to get a guy that can recruit and coach up talent. The Utah St guys can coach but can he recruit? Almost makes you wish you could get 1 guy to coach’em and 1 guy to recruit’em.

I think will friend should of been let go as well! Also I think Richt is going to go with ken Olivadotti! It makes me sick but that’s just what Richt does.

The trick is to find someone to counter Richt’s vanilla soft approach to coaching. Georgia is a notoriously soft and often injured program. Orgeron would bring a tough yet smart approach without being the dirtbag that Grantham was. Richt’s last chance to get this right.

Orgeron has never been a DC…he was a position coach and made the jump to HC. He bombed as a HC. He is a great motivator but can he handle the everyday details? He did well at USC but who knows what he did not oversee during that time.

We need someone that handle the tactical aspects of the job…not just recruiting or motivation.

I can’t believe there is no talk about Jeremy Pruitt. I think he’d be the best hire out there. The FSU DC did a great job in his first year after leaving Alabama, where he was voted the top recruiter in the country by one recruiting service.

Bobo was inherited by Richt. CMR had to hire the others, Van Gorder, Willie Martinez, and Granthom and Scott Lakatoss. . See? Mark Richt has failed in hiring top drawer football coaches.

WHY do any of us expect these next D hires to be wonderful??? Hmm.

I think the measuring stick for dirtbag should be that the USC players were furious that Orgeron didn’t get the HC job while the Georgia players, past and present, were holding the door for Grantham.
