At least we won’t have any Grantham-on-the-hot-seat talk next season!

Todd Grantham is on his way to Louisville. (AJC file)

Todd Grantham is on his way to Louisville. (AJC file)

You’ve probably seen that UGA has confirmed reports that Todd Grantham is leaving to take the defensive coordinator’s job under Bobby Petrino at Louisville. The words “getting while the getting’s good” immediately come to mind.

Lots of speculation on possible replacements, with former Texas DC Manny Diaz mentioned by a lot of folks. I just hope the search doesn’t drag out like it did when Grantham was hired. With signing day for recruits less than a month away, having someone already on board would be a big plus.

And at least other schools won’t be able to continue telling recruits, “Well, you know Grantham’s likely to be gone next year anyway.”

So, feel free to celebrate, vent, speculate, whatever …

Flat Tire – I said Richt would be here on 2014 and probably Grantham too. Do you need me to give you the definition of “probably”?

Also – like I said I wouldn’t cry if Grantham left…. Narduzzi has been my man for DC since 2009. Richt can save his job with this hire.

Ok, so there was an NFL playoff game (NE/Indy)on TV yesterday…guess what…two defensive (not rookie) leaped in the air to defend…could have fought the ball…but because they did not see each other, after the deflection and non-intercept, the ball fell to the turf. Ok,..b/c the way the ball “bounced” the receiver did not catch it.

My point…even million dollar DBs collide into each other…even when one has a seemingly secure interception…and guess what…the ball / blind side intervened. Are they asking this morning in Boston or Indy if anyone ( after 80% of season is played) whether someone specifically said to bat the ball down….I doubt it.

MAJ, I saw that play. To my recollection, it was not 4th and 18 with less than two minutes remaining and the defensive staff had not burned a TO to set their defense.

LA Dawg, you are correct…. But whether it’s us getting a freak fumble recovery against FLA last year it Tenn this year…I believe some games and championships, regardless of sport, occurs as the ball bounces. We know that…I think. For us, at Auburn, and the way our team fought back…it was TOUGH.

Like Nixon said to the press after losing the Governors race in Calif ( before winning the US presidency twice)….you won’t have ole CTG to kick around anymore….

MAJ, you’re correct. I never doubt the fight in the Dawgs. I do doubt the level of coaching, especially defense and special teams. My point was Richt will hire a DC that will keep the rest of the staff in place. Most A-listers will want to hire their own staff.

I still look for Richt to hire a mid-major coach that wants the bump up in salary. Worked out with Van Gorder. Maybe lightning will strike twice.

Look within? Kirk Olivadotti will get the nod. He coached 11years in the NFL and though the past 2 years the defenses have been porous “last year giving up 29 ppg” Olivadotti`s units were technically sound. Also remember it’s only 3weeks and change until National Signing day and Lorenzo Carter has us listed as co-#1 with FSU.

This hire will tell the tale on whether Richt really wants to continue to coach at UGA. Hiring a Manny Diaz because he’s “out of work” will say that Richt only plans to coach in 2014 and retire. I know for an absolute fact that there was a no nonsense meeting between several elite boosters and McGarity before his “Choppy waters” speech. Now I was told that the boosters were NOT going in demanding coaches be fired, but insisted that lingering problems on defense and special teams be fixed, whatever it takes. They held the notion that just as McGarity said in article that “It is Mark’s job to get it fixed”. I have no way of knowing anything about what is going on at Bama, but I have never seen Saban make the mistakes that he is making now. Kiffin will blow up the Bama program just like he has everything else he has ever touched, you can bet on it. Nobody wants anything to do with that P.O.S. He WILL cause unsettled waters, and now word is Ed O. is going there as well. Nobody knows more about Bama than Finebaum, so his sideways endorsement for Smart leaving Bama may have merit. I could see Diaz as an assistant but if Richt hires him as DC, he will more than likely be gone himself after 2014. That said, I have a feeling that the old home place UGA looks pretty good to Smart about now.

CTG could not get it done here. He may at Louisville, who knows? Sometimes, a person/system just is not a fit at a certain place, and CTG and UGA seem to fit that bill. Our guys were lost too much of the time, and although there was the occasional good play there were way too many “twilight-zone” moments, when nobody on the field or at the game knew what was going on with our defense. We need to get back to hard-nosed SEC defense, and we need a system that we can recruit, teach, and play.

Here is a list of defensive coordinators who have successful careers:

1) Bud Foster Scoring Def – @vt 2007(15.1)…..2008(16.7)….2009(15.6)
2010(13.5)……..2011(17.6)…….2012(22.8)…..2013(19.3) average points
allowed 17.2

2) Pete Kwiatkowski Scoring Def – @boise st 2010(12.8)…….201118.7)
2012(15.8)…..2013(24.8) average points allowed 18.2

3) Lorenzo Ward Scoring Def – @sc 2009(20.1)… 2010(23.1).. 2011(18.4)
2012(18.2)…..2013(20.3) average points allowed 20.0

4) Pat Narduzzi Scoring Def – @msu (2007(26.6)….. 2008(22.1).. 2009(26.3)
2010(22.3)….2011(18.4)….2012(16.3)….2013(13.2) average points allowed 20.7

5) Jeff Casteel Scoring Def – @wv 2007(18.1)…….. 2008(17.0)……. 2009(15.6)
2010(13.5)…..2011(26.8) @arizona 2012(35.3)……… 2013(24.2) average points
allowed 21.5

6) CTG Scoring Def – @uga 2010(22.1)…..2011(20.6)……2012(19.6)……2013(29.0)
average points allowed 22.8

7) Manny Diaz Scoring Def – @miss st 2010(19.8)…. @tex 2011(22.2)…. 2012(29.2)
2013(25.8) average points allowed 24.2

I put CTG on the list because he’s a better DC than Manny Diaz. You can’t blame CTG for everything. CMR never held his offense accountable for anything. REAP WHAT YOU SOW.

Fellow Dawgs in all honesty and to Coach Richt in particular- Narduzzi from Michigan State is a proven defensive coordinator and would make an immediate impact with the Dawgs. I would consider Orgeron but Narduzzi is the better DC and brings in more tangibles in being able to design a great defense and being able to coach the players to perform their very best.

The quetion remains whether Richt is capable or even has the desire to hire a first rate defensive coordinator. So far he has not demonstrated that he is capable of doing so. Foster turned him down once. Why would he not turn him down again? Things haven’t changed. Why would any nationally recognized coodinator want to work for Richt?

Mark Richt will hire a good christian family man who doesn’t smoke, swear or eat red meat. Great qualities for a high school principal but not so much for a big time football coach. He will talk about doing things the Georgia way and believe in the G. I respect CMR for being the good man everyone says he is but his football credability is quite lacking in my humble opinion.

Even the gnome St. Nicks’ and his “, go-fer” Kirby Smart, saw their over hyped “D” go down the crapper – giving up 79 points to Aubarn & Okie.

The big problem with Grantham’s “D” after mid season was that they gave up big plays at inopportune times. They held Nebraska to under 300 yards until that awful 99 yard TD blunder that cost them the game.

They held AuBarn down in the 4th until they got the unlucky bounce. Grantham did some good and some bad…. sometimes you have to lay the broken plays at the feet of the players.

CMR better hire a DC who has a big time name and who can recruit with the best of them and keep the best defensive talent in state. Something we’re not doing . To do so he will probably have to hire someone who could take his job if he is charismatic and can put UGA into a NC game. Sort of a catch 22. Open up the purse Mr. AD.

I’m torn about Grantham leaving. On the one hand he was a joke DC and its good that he’s gone. On the other hand, this will provide the Kool Aiders with yet another excuse for Richt. He’ll need more time for his DC to get rolling.

We’ll see exactly what they come up with but it will be something along those lines.

I would hire Kirk O. From a coordinator perspective, he is very experienced and knows what it takes to succeed in the NFL. He has a great pedigree, with a Dad who wears a SuperBowl ring as a D-Coordinator with the Giants
From a recruiting perspective, he will hold on to what we currently have. The kids like him, and he has done a great job with the current linebackers – taking above average SEC talent and making them NFL draft picks.
If UGA needs to make the big splash, I would go with Orgeron. He is a rah-rah guy who would do an incredible job of recruiting and is a proven coordinator.

hmmmm monty we were down 20 to Auburn and CTG managed (somehow) to stop them all of the 4th quarter and most of the 3rd and let us take the lead…he was not perfect but his D did stop the barn when we needed it. Love all the CMR has to do this or has to do that….he will do what he thinks is best for the program all of these coaches mentioned have up and down sides…Orgeron or Diaz might be good hires ,but with Kiffen headed to Bama I wonder if Kirby might be more inclined to leave now ? I’d ask the question if I was CMR.

DrBull: I totally agree. Narduzzi and Orgeron would be my only outside targets. I think Coach Olividatti would totally surprise a lot of people with his capabilities. Smart would be a major coup, 1st choice but unlikely. Tyrone Nix also available, great coordinator when he was at Carolina.
