Early 2014 rankings have Dawgs in or near the Top 10

Todd Gurley is a big reason early predictions have Georgia ranked fairly high for 2014. (Phil Sears / USA Today)

Todd Gurley is a big reason early predictions have Georgia ranked fairly high for 2014. (Phil Sears / USA Today)

Some of the earliest predictions on college football’s preseason Top 25 have Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs in or just outside the Top 10, which is lower than last season’s Top 5 preseason poll position but a lot better than the Dogs finished the season — unranked.

The highest credible ranking I’ve seen so far comes from Jerry Hinnen of CBSSports.com, who has Georgia at No. 10. Hinnen’s reasoning: “Aaron Murray’s gone, but Todd Gurley isn’t, and the Bulldogs seem to play their best defense when expectations are lower. (Having up to 10 returning starters on that side of the ball should help, too.) If the Bulldogs’ collection of injured receivers can return to full strength in 2014, this is still the likely SEC East favorite.”

ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach puts the Dogs just a notch lower, at No. 11. Says Schlabach: “Nothing seemed to go right for the Bulldogs in the second half of the 2013 season, from myriad injuries to the final minutes of a crushing 43-38 loss to Auburn to a 24-19 loss to Nebraska in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl. But if there’s a silver lining in UGA’s disappointing 8-5 campaign, it’s that a lot of injured players are coming back in 2014. The Bulldogs will have to replace record-setting quarterback Aaron Murray, but rising senior Hutson Mason performed pretty well in two starts after Murray suffered a season-ending knee injury. Georgia might bring back six starters on offense, along with top receivers Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley and tailback Keith Marshall, who suffered season-ending injuries. The Bulldogs will have to replace three starting offensive linemen. UGA might have back 10 starters from its underperforming defense, which started six freshmen and sophomores in 2013. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will be under fire to fix UGA’s problems on that side of the ball. The Bulldogs open the season against Clemson at home and don’t play Alabama, LSU or Texas A&M during SEC play.”

And Athlon Sports pegs Georgia at No. 12 in its early ranking, saying: “The SEC East is the early favorite as the biggest mystery in 2014. Who knows what to expect from Florida, and Missouri and South Carolina both have key pieces to replace. The Bulldogs return a good chunk of their depth chart next year, and Hutson Mason has a two-game showcase to make his case for the starting quarterback spot. Mason won’t have to do it alone, as running back Todd Gurley is one of the best in the nation, and Michael Bennett, Chris Conley and Malcolm Mitchell are a talented trio in the receiving corps. The biggest concern for coach Mark Richt is the defense, which allowed 29.4 points a game in 2013. Will another full offseason help some of the young talent on the Georgia roster? Linebackers Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd could be two of the best pass rushers in the SEC next year, while the secondary returns safety Josh Harvey-Clemons and cornerbacks Damian Swann and Shaq Wiggins.

I have to admit that’s almost enough to lift some of my post-Gator Bowl pessimism about the Dogs’ 2014 prospects. And Gurley alone is a big plus in the Dogs’ favor. But, as I wrote last week, there are quite a few lingering problems that need to be addressed in order for Georgia to get into the College Football Playoff conversation — which at the very least means winning the SEC East.

So what do you think? Are these early rankings overly optimistic, or do you see the 2014 Bulldogs as a legitimate Top 10 to Top 15 team?

Sounds accurate to me. We lost close games in painful ways and too many injuries. We beat some top 10 teams. Things are looking up! How bout we have no one suspended for Clempson as a goal?

I’m tiring of high expectations for this team. I think we should concentrate on what’s wrong rather than crowing about winning the NC. If we underperform again, then it’s time to start looking at the AD and the staff. We have too many good players to be losing to inferior teams, injuries or not.

UGA will be a good team that never reaches their full potential again next year. There is too much talent for them to fall flat on their faces, but there will be some lack lust performances and lack of discipline that will cost them a few games along the way and keep them from reaching their full potential. As much as I want to believe this coaching staff can get it done, history tells me the little things will add up and this team will be decent but not championship caliber.

Love the Blawg Bill. You do an awesome job.

I think those are a bit optimistic. I see UGA maybe in the bottom of the Top 25. One thing I am noticing around the SEC and the rest of the country is that alot of teams are losing key guys to the NFL and that could bode well for GA. The unknown in FL helps but what about Vandy? They seem to be improving. The schedule helps as well. Clemson should have a drop off and that game seems to maybe go our way. They really need to fix the defense and special teams and I think that view is shared by most if not all Dawg fans.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I don’t know if the problem is the coaching, a lack of talent, bad strategy, or what, but unless our defense improves, 2014 is going to look a lot like 2013.

Happy New Year Bill!

I think all the freshmen and sophomores we had to play on defense this year had more to do with the shortcomings than the play calling. There were several instances where Grantham made the right call, but we had defenders either making poor tackles or simply missing assignments. They should play faster with more experience and the game slowing down. That said, I do think his schemes at times can be too complex, so hopefully a year in the system will correct that.

As for the offensive side of the ball, getting all those playmakers back should definitely help. And while our record says who we were, 4 of those 5 losses saw UGA with a chance to win the game late in the 4th qtr. Can’t help but wonder what if we’d been healthy for all those games, but injuries are a part of the game.

Question for you do you think Richt will have an open competition at QB this spring, or will Mason enter spring with the job?

Thanks for the great articles and looking forward to more from you this year.

Go Dawgs!

The Dogs need more fire from Richt & the players, less of T. Grantham(send him packing), & a special teams dedicated coach(do they really need a tight ends coach, they don’t use the tight ends enough now). Too many new coaches & teams in the SEC are passing the Bulldogs by. Long term stability can be good in a lot of professions but complacency in sports is never good.

Talent wise, we have as much if not more than most, but they lack discipline and are not coached well.

Talent can’t carry us all the way. It’s the lack of heart, lack of fight, lack of want to – call it whatever you wish and Richt teams don’t have it for many games. That intangible factor plus getting out coached once or more every season will give us 3-5 losses just about every year.

Bill, hard to share the optimism as much as I would want to do. This year’s average to mediocre OL, combined with mediocre to horrible defensive secondary and Special teams play and mix in a Coaching Staff that doesn’t make the most of the 4 & 5 Star Recruits makes it difficult to impossible to believe better results are on the horizon.

Time for the koolaid. Everyone come get your big glass full. Who else gets suspended the 1st two games besides JSW. Anybody expect Mitchell to stay healthy. Special teams gonna get any better. How can we have continuity if each week we got different starters because of suspended and injured players. Continuity is a good thing maybe in our players but definitely not in these incompetent coaches. Grantham doesn’t know anything about pre snap movement trying to dictate to offense what players are blitzing and what players are not. Grantham and his prevent defense is just that. They prevent us from any chance of winning. Up the middle Bobo with him taking his foot off the gas. Somebody please tell him when a play works you can keep running it. But it will be nice to drink a little koolaid for a few months. Just can’t let myself get caught up in the same ole same ole continuity is a good thing.

UGA football has fallen into mediocrity and there is no work ethic to remedy the situation. It takes guts and huge effort to change coaches and coordinators. Are we really working as hard as the other programs at recruiting and coaching and training our players? I think not.

If you look at programs like MSU and CFU (both of which beat UGA in recent bowls), they are consistently overachieving with less talent. If you listen carefully to HCMR, he always says things like, “we did not kick a field goal b/c there is a risk on the return”, etch. Not – this is a bowl game so we rolled the dice and go for it!

If you look at special team play, there is not even any attempt to return a punt (just don’t fumble the fair catch is a victory), or confidence in the coverage teams. If you look at D, there is no attempt at simplifying an overly complex scheme where play calling is late and the players are confused and out of position since CTG has been here.

You have to step in and make the tough decision with coaches and realignment and adjustments and training but that takes WORK. It is so much easier to just delegate and promote continuity and not rock the boat. The issues on special teams and D have been going on for years… more of the same???

UGA is one of the premier places to recruit and a top ten program by definition. It has become a second tier program on the field and in player development. Sad to observe but there is no real desire to change the culture b/c the work required – from top to bottom – is just too damned hard.

Starting with HCMR who is a fine Man and represent the program well, recruiting is slowly eroding but still in the top ten every year (losing too many in-state players). But the prep work and on the field coaching, especially return teams and secondary play, is just atrocious – how can he say “continuity is good and desirable?”. Answer: too much effort required to change things up…

After watching Auburn and Ala, our special teams were not as bad as I thought.

I wonder if Auburn would’ve won it with Christian Lemay? Good runner, better passer.

1) there are reasons that Hutson Mason was second string

2) Offense should be loaded, but they need to learn to execute, and staff more strategic.

3) Defense needs to fix secondary, and improve line and linebackers

5) Special teams continues to improve. For all the other bs, it was the difference in the MNC BCS game.

6) Coaches need to be always coaching and improving too! No status quo should accepted.

7) We have the talent, schedule, experience to make it to the next level. I’m not sure we have the coaching or desire to get there. Watching some of the games in clutch times, Grantham was the only coach on the sidelines with any enthusiasm, or emotion displayed! Before you guys nail him, look at some of the others acting like zombies on the side lines.

Look for a beatdown from Clemson and Carolina, Fla wakes up and smacks you in the face. This pre season hype about UGA is what we use to call a pipe dream. With the kids today, “pipe” has an all new connotation.

UGA in 2014 will be what all UGA teams have been lately. They will showcase some real talent here and there but lethargy and lousy player development will lead us again to 7-5, 8-5.

The Dawgs of 2014 will play pretty much the same as the Dawgs of 2012. The secondary played well in 2012 and I expect the more experienced secondary of 2014 to do the same. The rush defense will be better than 2012 and the defense better as a whole. The offense will score points in bunches like they have been. They should win the east and be in the hunt for the four team playoff.

I keep hearing how talented GA players are yet it doesn’t translate on the field. With few exceptions (Gurly being one) I don’t see it. As I watched the NC game it was very clear GA lags behind the AU’s and FSU’s in talent and I dare say coaching as well. They tackle better, block better, defend better, and are always around the ball. If GA is ranked as high as the top 10-15 it won’t be after the first game. I don’t think GA will beat Clemson nor SC. There’s still basically the same D and DC. CTG’s 3-4 D just doesn’t work. The “talent” just isn’t there. There’s no defense on the perimeters and the secondary play is just about as bad as you can get in CFB. I don’t care how young they are after 13 games there was no improvement in those areas. And the offense loses AM and three OL. Mason is still a ? So are the new OL. Not sure if the injured players will be at 100% after those knee surgeries. Then there’s the same coaches. No ST coach, again. We saw what FSU did w/their KO return for a TD. You don’t see that at GA. We have #81 that muffed more punt returns in one season and probably set a record doing it. Yet these coaches still put him back there. No common sense at all. 2014 will be the same disappointing season as 2013 as long as this staff remains there. Recruits are going elsewhere and who can blame them. They see what most GA fans see. Ineptness. many fans have just lost faith in this current staff. They refuse to fix what’s broke. When they leave take the AD with them. He’s part of the problem.

The defense underperformed all year, yet UGA was an unjust targeting call and a miracle play away from a 10-win season. Of course, they were a Pig Howard fumble away from a seven win season too. If they don’t get too banged up and Grantham can bring the defense close to 2011 results, it’ll be a good year.

Every year with Richt is just like ground hog day. The reason we keep losing recruits is because of continuity. When the recruits we get come they all say I came to Uga because Richt is a good man. The tuff questions is when has Richt helped send any coaches to the next step. In 13 years who has Richt helped turn into a head football coach??? In 13 years who has Richt fired??? There is no energy in this program that screams we will become champions. The energy vampire is driving the energy bus and nobody is man enough to strong arm him out of his seat. With the running backs we recruit why can’t we get the linemen we need. Its because we don’t have a coach on our staff that when you look at that describes ferocious leader. So that’s why we don’t recruit or get the big nasties.

1. Richt and staff will underperform in recruiting, letting top talent from GA go elsewhere
2. 2 – 4 key starters suspended for 1 – 4 games during the offseason
3. Defense gets torched in 2 – 4 games = at least 2 losses.
4. Special teams meltdowns = at least 2 losses
5. Uninspired and unemotional effort = loss to a lesser team.
6. Lousy bowl, lousy coaching, and uninspired play = loss.
7. 214 Result = same old unde Richt. 7 -6, bowl loss, unranked.
8. Repeat cycle for 2015

Lets not even discuss rankings until about game 6 of the season. By then we may have an idea if we are going to pretty darn good or just plain horrible. If we spend the entire off season focusing on fundamentals, toss and catch, blocking, tackling, defending the pass, opening a hole, protecting the QB and then concentrate on not beating ourselves with turnovers and stupid penalties, then maybe we have a shot at a good season. Our football program and a few other sports programs at Georgia are fair to just awful.

As one example, Lady Gym Dogs Coach Landers needs to be long retired by now.

Baseball? Please. UGA men’s basketball? UGA needs to boot them too, OR AD McGarity needs to be gone. Championships are his standard for success. Well??

Everyone except for one respondent has missed the biggest issue! Coach Richt doesn’t recruit linemen well! All the four star receivers and running backs in the world cannot overcome the fact that both lines were dominated by Nebraska and now the OL needs to rebuild! Championships are won in the trenches not with creative scheduling and preseason HYPE! The game last night was a prime example, both lines for both teams were outstanding! Until this is fixed the only time uga will be in the top ten is in the preseason! Auburn, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Missouri, Texas AM, Alabama, and LSU are on the rise or maintaining excellence! Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Tennessee are second tier or dropping! Thank God for Kentucky, who is on everyone’s homecoming schedule if they can get them!

Dawgs should do better in ‘14. We have more secondary talent coming in and the whole defense is a year older and back. Mason is the key. I think the rest of the offense will be about as good as ‘13. If he can quickly get better, we could have a good year. What many forget is that 1 year still makes a big difference with 20 year olds. Bill – I agree with the kool-aid comments. You pundits seem to drink it to the extent that you lose all objectivity. UGA may start out as a top 15 team based on talent but it will wind up just like this year – unranked. You can see that 80% of the bloggers believe there is a coaching issue at UGA and that coaching weakness translates into not getting the 4 and 5 star recruits that this State is blessed with. UGA will not win another SEC championship much less a NC until Richt is fired. And because of you Kool-Aid drinking reporters it will not change.

I’m thinking more and more that the AD is the real problem. It appears that CMR signs his checks instead of the other way around. McGarity has done absolutely nothing to improve football or basketball. Just the status quo. We don’t need a warm body in that position, we need someone that will only accept the very best from his staff. Clearly this is not the case.

Georgia’s biggest problems are twofold:

One, our continued medocrity and 60’s style offense makes top recruits not want to come to UGA. That’s why the Auburns and FSU’s will feast on our top talent. These kids want to play for a championship and I don’t think the top prospects see that coming at Ga.

Secondly, the recruits that do come to UGA don’t get coached up. Look at how many guys play just ok at Georgia only to become stars in the NFL. Coaching!!

Richt has no passion. Bobo has great numbers but as long as he’s calling the shots at UGA, we will continue to be a predictable, also ran football team. Murray’s incredible skill is the only thing that kept Bobo from getting more heat the last 2 years. Take the bowl game for example. 4 red zone field goals won’t get it done.

Problems, we got them: Grantham can’t get his guys to understand their position assignments. Try running the ball when you are continuously hit at the line of scrimmage every time. No D line pressure. Our LB’s don’t hit, they just grab and take a ride for 5 yards. D backs have no clue.

How many teams would go 8-5 and not make ONE CHANGE to their coaching staff? Lost to Vandy, should have lost to Tn, should have lost to Tech, could easily have lost to Florida.

Fire the D coordinator, conditioning coach, O line and D line coaches tomorrow!!! Hell, the Falcons fired both line coaches when they weren’t even given the talent to even compete by their GM.

Uh…did anybody watch the BCS CG last night? All you people with your obsession with O-line play… did you notice that the almighty, all powerful FSU line had trouble with Auburn’s D-line for almost exactly the same amount of time it took for our Dawgs (with their supposedly crappy O-line) to get it under control and start having our way with them? LOOK AT IT before you give some knee jerk reaction… if you have ANY objectivity you can see that I am DEAD ON.

No I am not saying I don’t think our O-line can improve… they can but they aren’t nearly as crappy as you bozos seem to think. Everywhere I look I see this panic and it is totally unwarranted. I repeat the line is not as good as it can be but it isn’t nearly as bad as what you people seem to think.

Auburn was all over Winston for the first 25 minutes of the game.. he was in shock. By everyone’s estimation that is a pretty good O-line there. The Dawgs struggled in almost the exact same way But some people can’t look and decide for themselves… they just hear what their friends say and take it as gospel.

Yes we need to get more linemen…but that is true of any program. We have a pretty stout D-line but we need to add more guys for the future too.

Damn.. why do I even bother… no one thinks on these damned blogs anyway..

The answer is that the sample size you are seeing here are a fringe minority of the Bulldog Nation. Hundreds of times more fans believe he can get it done and that is fact. These are the people that just like to complain and have a form of “penis envy” that comes very close to “well Jimmy’s got one!” type whining.

LIsten to Championship coaches and they will tell you that you need a degree of luck to win a National Championship… things have to fall the right way. The tipped pass didn’t fall the right way for the Dawgs last year… otherwise this discussion is about “what do we have to do to get back?” Auburn made it to the CG because they got the right bounces at the right time. Otherwise they don’t even get to the SEC CG and the last BCS CG has a completely different dynamic.

These complainers will never acknowledge that and that is why I don’t give any credence to what they say. They are whiners…nothing more, nothing less. The fools that sit at the breakroom table and complain about everything and thing they can do it better…but never do anything at all BUT complain.

Mark Richt’s New Years Resolutions (Top Ten List):
1. Make “Finish the Drill” more than a slogan on a T-Shirt. Work hard and execute when games are on the line (see end of Auburn game).
2. Hire a Special Teams Coordinator, or coach, or advisor, or whatever you want to call it, but let’s stop the dropped punts, blocked punts, let’s get a real punt returner, let’s not fall for the obligatory fake punts and onside kicks.
3. We will have our corners harrass receivers at the line of scrimmage instead of giving them a five yard head start and momemtum. We will use the five yards legally allowed to hit a player and disrupt their route and the quarterback’s timing.
4. We will have a defense that doesn’t look like a Chinese Fire Drill before every snap.
5. We will not have a penalty coming out of a time out for illegal substitution.
6. We won’t have any more stupid suspensions that keep key players out of critical games (every game is critical)
7. If we kick a player off the team for conduct unbecoming a Bulldawg we will consider that conduct unbecoming the SEC and invoke our priveledge not to allow that player to “transfer” to another SEC team to later come back and haunt us.
8. We will stop teams on third and foreever and quick giving up the big play in prevent defense (see Auburn and Nebraska games)
9. We will teach our defensive players that wrapping up and tackling (yes Virginia) is required not only in the SEC but all throughout the NCAA (see North Texas Game)
10. We will do all of these things and maintain the High Standards of the Bulldawg Nation!

Skokie Dog

January 7th, 2014

Okay, NC, you want something new in one of my posts? Try this.
Besides the limited skills of our coaching staff (not a new point, I know), a key factor that has hampered this team for the past few seasons is lack of leadership on the field.
This is one reason that I have been less impressed with Murray’s passing records than many of our friends here and elsewhere. Great quarterbacks tend to make the players surrounding them better than they would be with someone else taking snaps. I read that somewhere, and it seems to be generally agreed upon by people who write about sports for a living.
Similarly, team leaders call out teammates for making stupid moves, like late hits, excessive celebration, or running out of bounds when bleeding the clock is the goal. One reason I appreciated many of the Dooley-coached squads is that these teams tended to police themselves on the field. Players, usually seniors, but sometimes underclassmen, were in the faces of their teammates when they screwed up or appeared to be giving less than full effort. Dooley’s teams often had star offensive linemen as well, and they made the difference when the pressure was on.
I don’t see this type of leadership on the field when I watch Georgia games these days. I’m not sure if that’s a problem with recruiting, coaching, or simply personal pride and accountability. If that problem were corrected, then I think we’d see some welcome progress with this team. Then again, by your definition, I’m a troll, so I may be wrong.

Dawg fans all seem to be on the extremes… it is always either “we are going to win the NC” or “we will never win a game again with the current coaching staff”, depending on the results of the last game.

@Rooster … I agree that looking at Auburn last night it might seem like UGA won’t beat Auburn while Malzon is there, BUT Malzon was coaching Auburn last Nov, and UGA should have won that game. So, while all the hype is currently how great Malzon is, I don’t see Malzon turning in to a Spurrier or Meyer situation against UGA.

QB holds the key – haven’t seen enough of Mason getting the ball down the field. He’s no Aaron Murray – that’s for sure. Needs to improve his pocket presence and going through his progressions. The OL is a big ? mark. The “D” has to be better. Special teams should be better. Haven’t evaluated the schedule yet but both Clemson and South Carolina have lost their QB’s as well as UGA.

Mason needs to improve – not impressing me yet.

I agree that “a degree of luck” is helpful to teams that win championships. So are having the team prepared to play at a high level for four quarters each and every game, having skilled players, including linemen, who perform well under pressure, and paying attention to details to avoid nasty surprises (or “lucky” plays by the opponent) during games.

gbal

January 7th, 2014

Well this is simply 3 media predictions….If you take this as your expectation…. that’s on you.

The media completely missed the target on UGA his year ranking them in the top 5. And many people bought it; turned these bad predictions into expectations. Our D was just too young to win consistently in shoot outs. Best we could have hoped for going into the regular season was 10-2. Once the injury bug hit our offense, it made winning shootouts even more difficult.

UGA should have expected a 10-2 record going into the season and without high number of injuries, is where the would have been. And then ranked 8-12 depending on the SEC game and bowl.

With what we have coming back, I think we CAN be better than last year. With a little better luck on injuries and good attitude and start, I’d predict 7-10.

The DL ran out of gas and quit putting pressure on the QB. They gave up a ton of yards. Fire the DC. Malzahn went conservative after he got a lead. Fire Malzahn. The QB threw a stupid interception. What was with that unsportsmanlike penalty… should kick #8 off the team for that kind of attitude. Their WR’s dropped passes all over the place and the QB couldn’t hit the side of a barn with a 2×4. Georgia is usually ranked much higher than they end up.

http://www.pollspeak.com/Football-News/the-5-most-overrated-and-underrated-teams-of-the-last-5-years-2013-edition.html

Richt’s record with a 1st year prostyle qb starter is somewhere between 6-7 with Murray, to 8-4 with Greene, Stafford and Cox. DJ won 12 games but had lots of experience prior to taking over.

So, UGA will finish UNRANKED again, going 6-6, or 8-4 in the preseason.

My issue is mainly on special teams, I know we have a bad defense but we have not made any efforts to fix special teams what so ever. We are the worst on punt returns and we never go for the block on punts we always just play it safe, I think we have a good kicker who might hold the ball a little long resulting in some of the blocked punts but we are not a good team for the most part on punt return/coverage. Kick return we are just avg at best JJ had a good return during the bowl game and Gurley returned one for a TD when he was a freshman but outside of that it has been abysmal and for the life of me why we cant just kick it through the end zone on kickoffs is beyond me.

TL;DR Special teams has sucked for too long with the same answers every year to fix and we don’t

I really don’t expect Mason to last all year without getting hurt. He has a average arm and with the way bobo loves play action he want be mobile enough to keep from taking alot of hits. I think Richt should let whoever wins the backup job play a few series a game. You all know the ones where we get the lead by a touchdown and then run the old up the middle. Mobile quarterbacks keep plays alive. Just look at the best teams this year. No reason Richt couldn’t coach the special teams he sure ain’t doing much any way. The fire left Richt when he quit being involved in the offense because he isn’t there with the quarterback in his ear saying come on coach lets go for it. He know has Bobo as a buffer in between them so he isn’t nearly as into the game as before. He acts more like a general manager than the head coach.

From what I’m reading in your blog & the comments section, I totally agree. Tired of saying ‘Next Year’, and I, like most, have come to the realization that ‘Next Year’ will never be UGA’s year as long as the insainity of this coaching staff continues. Basic fundimentals not taking place on the field, so one is to assume that they are not eing taught?? Don’t want to keep kicking a dead horse here, but I still cannot get over the fact that NO ONE mentioned to a group of freshmen defensive players, during a defensive time-out, to bat the ball down on a 4th down play…especially 4th & 18 with 34 seconds left in a game. That one play reminds me of why UGA’s year will ever be ‘Next Year’ as long as we have this coaching staff. Sorry, that’s just the it is. p.s. I could name a slew of other plays, starting with not calling a time-out in the SEC Championship Game last year.

I’m pleased to see the favorable preseason rankings, and a little surprised too. Pollsters were very reluctant to give Georgia the benefit of the doubt after the losing season of 2010. I’m not yet 100% sold myself. With the same coaching staff in place and no significant pressure for change, I think we’ll see the same problems play out again. I was pleased that the routine blowout losses did not happen this year. We lost many games, but they were all competitive. I’m hoping the blowouts don’t start up again next year.

Gurley WAS a beast his freshman year. I can only hope the high ankle injury he got early held him back, as he was clearly NOT the same back as the year before. This coming year is HIS money year and i look for 1200 yards and 15 TD’s. He’s gone. No reason to hang around. Great players don’t hang around to play Nebraska at Noon at year end. They stay to win Championships. Nothing to see here.

After watching several bowl games and assessing talent, Ga is not making good recruiting decisions in either line of scrimmage. Our O lineman are soft and not very athletic. While Hutson will be ready, do you really hang your season on his skills. Where are the other highly recruited QB’s we have landed. Why are some transferring. Did we make mistakes in recruiting them? Our coaching is lacking in almost every area. While I like Richt, I don’t think he has the fire he had years ago and that would be a normal occurrence. No special teams coach? Compare us to Auburn schemes, Alabama, LSU, South Carolina. All have better direction from the coaching staffs. Why are so many top players leaving the State?
I hope I am wrong, but I do not see a huge change coming next fall because the coaching and schemes are holding us back. Can you truthfully say that our coaching staff measures up to the teams I mentioned above?

I-DOG

January 7th, 2014

Not sure the optimism is justified.

Seems like a four loss season in 2014 is about what we can expect. Here is why I see it that way:

We just lost to Nebraska, a team that we were nearly a double digit favorite to. In that game there was once again a game losing type special teams gaffe

The first series defensively was a microcosm of the season. Well played on first down, well played on 2nd down, and then on 3rd and 13 or 14, we give up an easy first down to keep the drive going.

The 3rd and long 99 yard touchdown pass was a result of confusion in the secondary and the kind of horrific play that has become just a little too routine lately for the Dawgs.

I’m not convinced we will be any more physical and consistent along the offensive line next year. I understand that we will have tremendous talent and depth at receiver and the depth at running back will be perhaps the best I can remember if the two recruits sign and play anywhere near their potential. Could rival Worley, Henderson and Hampton. I do think we have the potential to be a good offensive team.

Very concerned about the defense. Will this group be more talented than the 2012 defensive squad? They gave us pretty mediocre results. I think we will be better on defense than we were this year, but that isn’t saying very much. I don’t think we can rise all the way to mediocrity next season defensively.

Biggest concern is that we are hearing there will be NO changes to special teams, offensive line, defense, or strength and conditioning. I’m not a FIRE EVERYONE IN SIGHT kind of guy, but 5 losses is HISTORICALLY poor results for Georgia. How many times in the last 30 years have we suffered that many losses? Really just a handful. Donnan’s first year (and then NEVER again with him), didn’t happen in the last days of Dooley, and happened a few times with Goff (but he inherited a mess and then had to play Hines Ward at QB with a broken wrist). I’d like to hear Richt promise some changes and some improvement in the areas that are obviously bringing the program down.

If I was hearing…we aren’t going to hire a special teams coach, but we ARE VERY CONCERNED with the problems in this area over the past couple of years and we are going to put a TREMENDOUS emphasis on special teams basics this offseason… I would be more optimistic.

If I was hearing …we aren’t going to fire Grantham, but we are going to simplify the defense this Spring and make sure that our athletes can make plays and create turnovers and get off the field on a reasonable number of third or fourth and longs, I’d be optimistic.

I am going to assume that we will have a handful of starters out for the opener due to suspensions against Clemson because year in and year out, that is the norm.

We haven’t played well in openers against good competition the last 5 or 6 years. Okie State, Boise, Clemson, etc… not sure we should expect that to change without something CAUSING it to change.

It is likely Gurley’s last year at Georgia (it goes by quick doesn’t it?). Unfortunately, I think we will look back at his career in a similar manner to AJ Green’s and scratch our heads as to how we didn’t win more with him while we watch him succeed at a very high level in the NFL.

I hope I am wrong, look like a moron if we can get things turned around, and have to eat my words. Nothing would make me happier.

I think the ranking is too high. The favorite in the SEC East has to be South Carolina (which has the best coach) followed by Mizzou, Vandy, then UF and UGA with UT and UK rounding it out. Hope I am wrong, but nothing I have seen from UGA recently make me think otherwise.

What’s interesting to me is the apathy coming from the coaches and lack of pride. They have relived themselves from responsibility of another let down season by telling themselves, and probably the players too, that if it weren’t for injuries we would have done allot better.

UGA football can be summed up this way “consistently underperforming”. The big question is “why”? Many of us fans have already done the examination and come to the same conclusion, it’s coaching. But more specifically, it’s our “system” or way of doing things. We underperform in recruiting, player development, game day coaching, and overall vision:

1). Recruiting: We consistently miss on high profile GA kids where we need to build depth and where it would make the biggest impact – on the lines and in the secondary.

2). Player development: See Damian Swann as an example and see Marlo Brown as another. We consistently hear of ex-UGA players dominating the NFL but they have lackluster careers at GA

3). Game Day coaching: I dont think I need to provide any examples here on poor play calling and game clock management

4). Vision: the eyeball test confirms that we do not have a “identity” as a team. Look at Duke this year. They know that they are not the most athletic or the most talented, but they “are” the most cohesive and determined. It’s afforded them wins in games they shouldnt have competed in and achieved at a higher level than expected.

All of these things are controlled or instituted by coaching. Sorry NCDawg, this is why we pay someone 3MM a year, not just because they know X’s and O’s. It’s apparent to me that our system is broken. Ive said it before, it’s either indifference or Incompetence and neither one is acceptable.

When you can’t even find a guy to return a punt properly, you can forget about any kind of championship talk. Just keep replaying CMR’s post game pressers because they all sound the same. One other question? What’s the over/under on the number of UGA SEC basketball wins this season. I say 2. Meanwhile, McGarity sits in the corner gumming a soft cracker.

Georgia has way too many great players and great new Recruits not to be near the top ten every year. THE PLAYERS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM.
THE PROBLEM IS THE WAY THEY ARE COACHED. No Special teams coach. Special teams lost us 3 games this year. No Coaching changes even though we lost 5 games. Texas lost 4 and fired their head Coach. I don’t want to fire Richt but I want a fair evaluation of his Coaches and McGarity will see that at least 3 Coaches just are not SEC material. A ton of season ending injuries and Richt doesn’t even give it a thought that it may be the S&C or method of practice.

7576DAWG,
Gotta throw in one thing, though; we have not recruited well enough up front. We have to get better o-linemen. Ole Miss, for example, even out-recruited us up there!
On D, I fear that even though our youngsters will have another year under their belt (and I agree with you on this) we just cannot teach/coach or whatever the system we are now in. A couple of good plays, sure, but then the deer-in-headlights looks way to often. To quote an older fellow I know concerning the defense: “What we doin’ ain’t workin’!”
We need to start from the ground up. Our D could not consistently stop my grandaughter in her Barbie-car!

To the whiners and crybabies: you need to go get some koolaid, so you can feel better kids. You have become so negative, nobody listens to you! UGA can improve their special teams a lot. But, Auburn lost because of a missed field goal and kick return. Bama lost because of special teams. Anybody can identify a problem after the fact. So, even if your fit pitching negativity could get Richt fired, you would be whining just as hard over having Saban or Malzahn this year if either was your coach. One team gets to be the champion. It is very hard to be the champion. UGA has been in the hunt, way, way more than the average team. Very astute analysis of next year’s team there. He gets PAID for this?

“the secondary returns safety Josh Harvey-Clemons and cornerbacks Damian Swann and Shaq Wiggins”

Ouch. Hopefully there are players ready to challenge these guys. If they start the same guys it’s hard to see how the undisciplined play will improve much, but I guess we can hope.

I look for Georgia’s offense to be more conservative, fewer downfield shots. Mason is not a double-threat; he’ll need to be effective throwing downfield or it will be a long season.

The biggest thing will be injuries. Will the Bulldogs be able to get Mitchell, Scott-Wesley, and Marshall back at or near 100%? Will Todd Gurley stay healthy all year? Will they avoid any other major injuries? If the answer is Yes, this team will win the East and definitely compete for the playoff.

Lets face it, injuries undid this team in 2013. There really is nothing to read into a Gator bowl featuring Mason in his second start minus Mitchell, Scott-Wesley, and Marshall. The offense clearly underperformed, and with good reason. You can’t take that kind of talent out of the lineup and expect to continue to roll up 40 pts per game. I don’t care how well you think UGA recruits. Murray alone being on the field means UGA wins going away, even if Martinez was also in for Nebraska.

Mason will be better next year as he will now get an entire offseason of preparation with the first team. I don’t think the O Line will be missed much since they really did struggle much of the year. That could be a good thing to have some different guys step in.

Grantham does have work to do on the defense, but I suspect much of that will get worked out with these freshman and sophomores growing up.

Bottom line, 2013 was a bad luck year, but one that often showed how good this team could have been if not for all the injuries. I think they should be pre-season 10-15.

On the subject of a new coach, do we not have enough examples of universities running coaches out only to get stuck with leftovers? They are still trying to pick up the pieces at UT after running Fulmer out.

Auburn may have gotten lucky this year, but they just came off an 0-8 season. They won 4 games in the final 2 minutes. That could just as easily been a 7-5 season for them. Their D has been mostly bad to awful since Tuberville got fired. Lets see what Malzahn does next year before crowning him.

How’s Michigan doing after running off Lloyd Carr?
How about that hot name Will Muschamp? haha While on that subject, anyone heard from Dan Mullen lately?

UT runs off Mack Brown, misses on Saban and Mora, so now they have to hope Charlie Strong can build their team up without the benefit of Florida recruiting.

So please stop trying to pretend the next Urban Meyer and Nick Saban is just waiting to take the UGA job. That’s the only way you step up from Richt, but nearly every other option will be a step down.

Bill, thanks for pulling the different pre-season rankings together for us.

My thoughts today. In order to be ranked 12th or higher at the end of the 2014 season, the following must occur:

- win all home games and defeat Florida
- UGA defense holds SEC opponents to an avg of 13-17ppg
- zero SEC opponent TDs resulting from UGA Special AidAidTeam turnovers
- our offense maintains below average turnover ratio in fumbles/interceptions
- no simultaneous injury loss of two or more starters on either side of the ball for more than two consecutive conference games

NcDawg,
This is a blawg. Which means people are able to voice their opinions. Just because you don’t agree with everyone’s opinion doesn’t make us wrong or you right. All I ask is that we the fans are divided on whether Richt should be coach or not. That doesn’t do us the fans any good or the team. At the end of the day we all want the same thing. That’s for Georgia to win a National title. I believe the best thing is to fire Richt and hire someone new so everyone will become excited and encouraged again. Maybe we don’t hire someone to get us over the hump and maybe we do. Richt has taken us almost over the hump but in 13 years he hasn’t done it. We all just need to stand together and bring new excitement and the only way to do that is to get the trolls and koolaid kids together.

You are right Mike S…8-5 is way better than gettin a new coach. Of coure UF won 2 titles after they fired Zook, Auburn won a MNC after Tubbs left and when they fired Chizik they wound up in another MNC game. Bama won 3 MNCs after firing their coach but then Saban is one of a kind right? Somehow LSU won another MNC with Miles.

The last 4 coaches at Auburn have either had an undefeated season or been in a MNC game or both. We haven’t had either in 31 years (lost one in 82).

I know everyone uses Fulmer’s firing as a cautionary tale but firing coaches who aren’t going anywhere works out pretty well soemtimes.

Losses to Clemon, SC, and Auburn because they have comporable talent and better coaching and at least one loss that is totally unexpected. That makes four losses.

At least one of the losses will be totally attributable to special teams in a close game.

You would have to be a moronic imbecile to expect Georgia to be anything more than an also-ran. That may mean the Dawgs win the East, which they won’t, but it certainly doesn’t mean that UGA ascends to the SEC elite. UGA will make plenty of money, the brand will play well in Atlanta, and the monied interests will pat the administration on the back for a job well done. CMR is the dean of SEC coaches, and his commitment to a high church brand of football that emphasizes predictable, good, and morally responsible entertainment over hard nosed, kick-ass competitive football will only add to his legacy. Embrace the goodness. You ain’t getting greatness.

Bill, look at the comments on this and every AJC blog about UGA. It’s overwhelmingly an indictment of the coaching staff at UGA. When will you (the media) and your readers (the fans) quit talking amongst yourselves and take your complaints and demands to the University? This is unacceptable. How can this coaching staff and AD be allowed to remain intact? It’s mind-boggling to all outsiders. The truth is that the coaching staff is responsible for the lack of recruiting the best Ga players and the lack of performance on the field. UGA has so many good players and prospects that there is no excuse for not being a perennial national contender.

Someone has really got to go to the University and demand better. The problem? An AD who is an accountant more concerned with the profitability of the program than the performance of its teams. McGarity will not do his job, demand more from the coaches, and spend the money necessary to support the programs and elevate them to elite status. Can anyone argue with this? If so, please enlighten me.

I think it’s gotten to the point that that AD is afraid of a backlash from the media (ESPN), if they fire Richt. If they were to ever fire Richt, you would have Lou Holtz, Herbstreet, Reece Davis, Mark May and every other talking head bashing UGA for firing a man who ran a clean program and won on average 9 games a year or so. They of course will leave out the important things such as his inability to keep up with Bama, LSU, Florida, Auburn in regards to playing for the National Championships. DawginColoroda,

According to your reasoning, in order to love the Bulldogs, we need to be content with three BCS bowls during the Richt years, a good year being a trip to the Capital One, most commonly a trip to a third tier bowl. We need to accept that our SEC competitors fill their rosters with Georgia talent to compete for BCS bowls and national championships. Lastly, we need to overlook the fact that those that don’t go to schools that compete for NCs would prefer to go to Ole Miss, Tennessee, etc. than stay home and have their talent minimized until they go to the NFL.

I guess love is blind!

When I question our S&C program I think it is doing what it takes getting most of the players ready but my question is are the players being monitored. I question whether the way our players work out may be contributing to all the season ending injuries. There is no way all of the torn knee’s this year was just fate or a fluke . I don’t know if it is S&C but they are exhausting their muscle to such a degree that they can’t take the stress. Georgia has got to figure out what caused so many season ending injuries.

He is the hopenest coach in the country and Dawg fans are the hopenest fans in the country. I live in lower Alabama, Mobile, and I know what you mean about Bama. The most smug fans in the country because they have a coach that hopes for nothing.

Saban makes things happen. The state of Alabama has produced only 2.6% of the FCS recruits in the past 5 years and won 3 NCs.

Richt goes to the Capital One and gets a raise and an extension.

UGA fans crow about being 5 yards short of a NC in 2012. Really, we were 500+ yards from a NC. The number of yards allowed by a defense with nine (9) NFL draftees.

One thing that never get mentioned on these blogs is rather people in the state of ga sow more bad seeds than good ones. Reaping what is sown doesn’t just happen to bad people it’s natural divine law (Galatians 6:7,8) Good seeds produces fine fruits bad seeds produces worthless fruits.

If you think race relation in this state is any better since the civil rights movement think again. There are more hate amongst fans on the ga blogs than any blog I’ve visit. Continuing sowing bad seed for bad seed will reap more failures and disappointments.

The real problem starts with the Athletic Board. That’s where pressure starts from. They hear it from friends who donate to the program. No such luck in Athens. They are smug and happy. Texas, Bama, Auburn, LSU, Fla, hell even Tenn don’t suffer fools long.

There’s enough top D-1 talent in the Atlanta area to field a national championship team. We have about as much money as anyone in the nation. Hope and optimism is all we should as for?

Spoken like a true non-supporter! The people who own this football program are the ones that donate to the fund, buy tickets, and actually attend the games. Until the fan base including the junkyard dawg have higher expectations of the Georgia coaching staff, we will continue to get poor work ethic out of the coaching staff and continue to fall in the SEC. This year we’re the lower half to the league and with recruiting continuing to lag, we’re headed for the bottom third. Season ticket purchase for the coming year greatly in question.

Same article, different year. Every year adequate players who are no more than contributors go on to play 10 years in the NFL. Brandon Boykin and Marlon Brown are the most recent examples of this. Neither was a superstar and hardly anything the other team had to be scared of.Every year we waste talent. Every year there is an excuse. The best running back in Athens since Herschel will be wasted. We will have had 2 top 15 picks at the RB position, the #1 pick at QB, and a top 5 pick at WR in the last 5 years with nothing to show for it.

Keep drinking the kool-aid. If Mason is another Joe Cox or JOe T3 and I’ve seen nothing to convince me otherwise the next 2 years (we will have another starting QB in 2015) will be just as frustrating.

Wow hasn’t anyone learned anything about this program. We’re not even a top 25 team much less top 10. Hutson Mason is the next Joe Cox. Grantham’s defense could not stop my sons pop warner team. Our special teams are laughable at best. We have NO offensive line. Our S&C program is bottom tier. Have they forgotten we have Mark Richt as our head coach. Unprepared, turnovers, penalties, poor defense, no special teams, poor O-line play, lack of discipline, lack of focus. I guess to sum it up this program is just LACKING in every phase of the game. Firing the staff and rebuilding is the only answer. Too many talented coaches out there to be stuck with the ones we have now. Everyones worried about rebuilding, we just finished 8-5, it couldn’t be much worse.

Blame his ankle if you want but there’s no way your gasping for air on the sidelines after 2 or 3 plays unless your just plain out of shape. Our strength and conditioning program is a joke and Gurley is proving it .

Georgia will experience an exodus of players come summer. I can feel it coming. Some we already have- bead on, having been benched for “issues”, etc. This is the Georgia way.

Bottom line, Coaching is more than being a nice guy. The guy at the top had better hire tough coaches to manage the players. Another way to manage them is to recruit kids that want to win, instead of what we hear about around the SEC.

2014? UGa will end up 8-5. UGA is not an elite football program anymore than we are in basketball or baseball. Folks LOOK at the record over the last 10?, 20? Years.

Think about it UGA has the talent to be very good next year so why so much pessimism or shaky oppotimism. Simple the coaching isn’t matching the talent and unless there are some major corrections we again will see games lost because of fumbled fair catches, lack of stopping key 3rd down conversions, always some suspensions to key players, poor tackling in key situations and as seen in the bowl game game changing dropped passes just to name some of the obvious.
I like Coach a lot he is a decent man who truly cares about his players and the University and I hope he can Coach next years team to the fullest. But only he can make this happen and if he does he will deserve the credit as Head Coach and if we continue to see the same mistakes and recurring problems then some AD decisions need to be made.

Oh, preseason rankings. Whatever would people on the internet complain about if we didn’t have you?

As my daddy always said, “Opinions are like @$$holes: everybody’s got one.” So here’s mine! My opinion, that is. Not the other … anyway!

I can’t say I’m not disappointed with this season, but I can’t say that we were completely horrible (or even bad), either. We had some great wins (LSU, Carolina), some crap losses (Vandy) some near-misses (Tennessee) and some heartbreakers (Auburn), but our record could have been much worse than 8-5. So for all the adversity faced this year (mainly in terms of key injuries), I won’t complain too much about the results.

Next year, however, I do expect big things. I won’t go so far as to expect a championship (you never know what’ll happen in a season, after all), but I definitely think we’re poised to do very well. We’ve got depth, experience, a manageable schedule and the weight of an underwhelming season driving the team to improve.

At the very least, the rest of the SEC East is losing so much that I think we improve simply by losing less than everyone else.

One area that needs pretty drastic improvement is special teams: outside of Marshall Morgan, they’ve been pretty frikkin’ terrible. The worst I’ve seen in a long, long time, and we used to be really good at special teams! I dunno what has to happen, but something big needs to happen here, or else I fear that it’ll cost us some ballgames.

Still, I’m a glass-half-full kinda guy, so I think we’ll get it fixed (but here’s a tip … take Reggie Davis off punt returns: he sucks at it).

Can’t wait until we tee it up again! Go Dawgs!

JB

Sam. Nice post. All we have is hope. Yes, what you say is true. The returning players and the Schedule tell us things SHOULD be better. We shall see. It’s why they play the games. The trend is not in out favor though, based on the last 5 years….speaking of, there was a report out yesterday I posted about that took all the pre season ranking the last last five years and ran stats on actual results.
Dawgs were the 3rd most overrated team in those 5 years out of 120. What does that tell us. It tells me that results don’t outweigh the hype.

I’m a dillusional dawg fan right now. Watched an uninspired team get their A– handed to them by an average Husker team. I’m tired of missed tackles, fundamental football mistakes and a team that takes on the demeanor of it’s head coach( and I like Coach Richt). We have seen a measurable drop in special teams play over the last two years and we have the athletic ability to turn every offensive special teams place into a scoring opportunity…not to mention the drop off in our punting game. Yes, I will agree we were young on defense but these kids just chose not to tackle. Tackling has been taught since these kids were in “rec” ball and those skills were drilled in middle and high school but it seems every tackle has to be a “kill” shot with no use of arms. The secondary certainly knew that one of the favorite plays for any team standing in the endzone is to take that shot down field…a great and safe offensive play that we scored on this year.
A lotta work to do in the off season because the competition will definitely coach their kids up.

Colorado Dawg:

Agree that injuries hurt the Dawgs this season, but that doesn’t tell the whole story on the 5 loss season and not being ranked at the end of it.

Georgia was reasonably healthy for the Nebraska game and lost to a team that isn’t very good. Consider that Mason had a month to prepare and that he will be the starter next year and that Bennett, Gurley, and Connelly all played and the defense was relatively healthy and this game didn’t inspire much confidence for next season where Nebraska would be about the average team talent wise that we play in 20104. Clemson, S. Carolina, Auburn, TN, and Florida should all be as good or better than the 2013 Cornhuskers. We couldn’t get it done against Nebraska because of poor defense and special teams and that wasn’t due to injuries.

What if TN and Florida start playing like they are capable of next season? Scary thought

Grantham not only called out Swann, he stated that S&C needed to be evaluated. Look guys, don’t think for a minute that these coaches, including MARK RICHT don’t know that improvement on every level is expected. They are all so busy trying to close well for 2014’s class that not much will be heard in terms of what they plan to do about it, but we will hear it after signing day. Personally, I believe MUCH pressure is being brought by McGarity to fix the problems. If anyone would look objectively at the comparable games, they would see that the Dawgs played just about the same quality game against AU as FSU did, and better than Bama did against AU. Getting to where it needs to be is not as far out as many on these blogs think. All of the bobble head pundits are already giving the East to UGA. The West is probably going to be back between Bama and LSU, as Tre Mason will more than likely be in the draft. Auburn has no other difference makers to make up for that loss. Sure the two Columbia trips will be hard games, but very winnable. You would think that UGA has no better outlook than the Lizards for 2014.

Wish, Hope, but don't expect

January 8th, 2014
12:20 pm

Ok, I’ll try again, with brevity…
CTG defense ppg improved every year until this year. No surprise with the inexperience. Half a dozen
playmakers on offense staying healthy would’ve helped. That said, coaches have to fix special teams.
Mason has to step up and continue to improve. Players need to be disciplined, during the games and especially during the week AND offseason. We NEED to go into and through a whole season with no starters being suspended. I’m optimistic about 2014, but realistic, also. Breakdown in discipline costs us every year, this one will be no different, I imagine.

The thing about college ball is that the team’s line-up changes each and every year. Just losing a few critical players to graduation or the league is enough to send any team into a tailspin. Cap that with a slew of injuries and a top 10 team could do well to even end with any bogus ranking at all.

Unfortunately, even with the playoff system just over the horizon, the sports media still owns the sport and who it will be in those playoff games. There’s no guarantee whatsoever that who gets to the top tomorrow, will be much different than those who did during the BCS era.

I like our chances. We had sky high expectations following last year, lost every significant offensive starter for the season or significant stretches, had a defense full of frosh and sophomores playing against the eighth toughest schedule in the country. Even North Texas turned out to be a bowl team. I live in Oregon, so I don’t hear the sports radio or bar stool chatter, but unless Spurrier is going somewhere, or Saban or Mahlzahan (I am not spell checking Mahlzahn) who are we getting better than Richt. We play in the SEC. Unless you are Alabama, you should not expect to win the SEC every year. Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Florida, THE USC, can all say that with their facilities, boosters, tradition, etc… that they should be great year in and out, but that is never the case. I think we will win the SEC east and get bounced by whoever survives the west, be it LSU, Alabama or Auburn. I’d love a chance to get Auburn on a neutral field in a rematch. I also think that its past time that the SEC had one of those seasons where everyone beats everyone and proves the need for an 8-16 team playoff. Its the SEC. I think at this point we see what happens when you fire a proven coach. While I agree with most fans that it is high time we hire a Special Teams coach, unless Richt goes 8-5 four or five years straight, I ain’t pulling a Phil Fullmer. Tennessee still hasn’t recovered. I still haven’t recovered from Ray Goff.

BigWally

Johnnymac, we can’t live in fear as to what happened to Tennessee. If Auburn would have thought that way, they never would have fired Chizek after just one bad year and look what happened to them this year – with a head coach who only was a head coach 1 year (at Arky State).

Oregon proves my point on needing some luck to win a NC. Talk about easy schedules, fair rankings, and media darling buzz–but last time i checked NO MNC. Look at Auburn their luck ran out–Fl Sts almost ran out playing a comparable talented team–Fisher made good adjustments at half–Malzhan didn’t as he didn’t against UGA or Bama–won off freak plays both times. Moreover, he still does not have a championship–and likely not to get one–he didn’t have Cam, he had marshall–big difference.

Yep. I refuse to embrace our mediocrity. I refuse to accept our players partying til 4:00 in the morning before a noon kickoff for a bowl game. I refuse to accept how our young players don’t improve as the season goes on. I refuse to accept how our offensive line was suppose to be a dominating strength this year, but wasn’t. I refuse to accept an incompetent Def. Coordinator who is grossly overpaid for the results he produces. Unfortunately our AD seems willing to accept all of the above.

in case you didnt know

We are in our 3rd 5 loss season in 5 years

5 of the last 8 seasons have had 4 or more losses

6 of the last 8 seasons have had 3 or more losses

As for Fulmer; the only lesson to be learned from that is the importance of having good coordinators under you;

Fulmer went downhill after Cutcliff left;

kind of like Chizik when Malzone left;

kind of like UGA when Vangorder left

kind of like FSU when they lost some well known Asst

For those who are forecasting a much better outcome for 2014, say 11-1, don’t forget that this year’s 8-4 record could easily have been as bad as 4-8. In three of those eight wins (LSU, Tenn., and Fla.), ‘Dogs prevailed by three, and the win over GT (in OT) was only by seven. Of those wins, the victory over UT was the “lucky” one, since their receiver fumbled what would have been the winning catch. That play was offset by Auburn’s “lucky” catch to beat the ‘Dogs a few weeks later.

We will lose one between Clemson and SC for starters. Fragile Mitchell will not make it through four games without an injury. Let the lunacy begin I guess. Georgia will be 7-6 next year, another typical underachieving Mark Richt year. This year he used the injuries and young defense excuses, so next year….. he will probably use the 1st year quarterback and a still gelling Offensive line? Sounds about right. So Mark Richt has now had Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, AJ Green, Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, Brandon Boykin, David Pollack, Odell Thurman, Baccari Rambo, Musa Smith, Verron Haynes, John Jenkins, Sanders Commings, Todd Gurley, Orson Charles, Aaron Murray, and numerous others that I can’t remember right now, and still hasn’t won a National Championship or even played in a BCS title game? I could field an NFL Pro Bowl team with the players off UGA rosters the last 13 years or so, and yet 6-7 and 8-5 seasons have become the norm for this program, and some of these “fans” accept this? Can UGA be ranked 12th or higher after the 2014 season? I think it is possible; however, at a minimum, UGA must:

- win all home games, beat FLA, and beat Mizzou or SC
- dawgs hold opponents to a 13-17 PPG AVG
- zero opponent TDs resulting from UGA Special Team turnovers
- operational depth on the offensive line
- few prolonged injuries exceeding two Conf games

Took 3 quarters to finally get put away North Texas. About let worst Florida team in 2 decades come back to beat them. Took overtime to beat Tech. Lost to Vanderbilt. Stay thirsty my fellow Dawgs.

Rumor is that Lame Kitten has interviewed for the OC job and Saban praised him as a bright offensive mind. Got my fingers crossed that Saban will put another nail in the coffin by bringing in the Lame One. Kiffin could sell a used car to a used car salesman/

Saban screwed up with his OC hire. He knows they had the wrong “O” plan. Instead of throwing medium and deep passes all night they could have controlled the line running the ball and throwing dink and dunk passes. He’s got the best TE in the country and never throws to him. He’s got one of the top 5 RB’s in the nation and all he did until the Bowl game was play special teams. He tried to feature A J McCarron but he’s not NFL elite – just a game manager. He overestimated McCarron and underestimated Derrick Henry and he lost to Okiehoma who’s far less talented. And Miami and Va Tech will be in the top 10 too. The key is to get the rankings out now. Today. Don’t spend 5 minutes thinking about it. Just take last years preseason top10, jiggle it a little, and put it out there. And at the end of the year, all fans can laugh at the absurdity of it. That’s how you get a 2013 preseason top 25 without Michigan State or Central Fla. That would have required thinking and analysis which no respectable sportswriter will do today.

I don’t think it’s a matter of mediocracy, it’s more of a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality.

Put yourself in McGarity’s shoes, the Big Money Alumn are still writing checks, the Hartman Fund is doing fine. No drop off in season ticket sales, or merchandise. College Athletics is all about the money.

You’ve got a bunch of conservative high dollar alumn who are happy with Richt – don’t get me wrong I’m sure there are a few that want a change like a lot of folks, and trolls here do, but certainly not enough to move the needle. They like Richt because, in most years he’s going to have a winning record, he’s going to get the Dawgs to a New Year’s day bowl, and yes there is still hope that everything will fall into place and they will see him hold up the crystal football at the end of the year.

He runs a clean program, quickly gets rid of troublemakers, doesn’t do under handed things. Under Richt we won’t have to worry about a “tattoo-gate” (OSU), letting agents get too close to the program (Miami/UNC), Richt is not going to embarrass himself or the program (Kiffin, Petrino), and by all accounts is the ideal southern gentleman.

For the big money alumn at UGA those things are every bit as important as winning a NC maybe even more.

Folks we don’t have the knee jerk, stroke as many checks, pay as many recruits as we need to, win at all costs, deal with the fallout if any down the road, kind of boosters. If we did, one of them or a group of them would have stepped up and said , “here’s the money, give coach his indoor practice facility, just make it happen).

The bottom line whether you believe in Richt and his staff or not, want him gone or want him to stay forever, NOTHING you, me, Bill King, Chip Towers, or anyone else even remotely associated with the program thinks or says, is going to make one bit of difference in what happens.

McGarrity is like Foley and every other major program AD, they listen to one thing and one thing only, THE MONEY. If the Money says Richt is gone tomorrow, then he’s gone, if the money says he stays he stays period.

Until the Hartman Fund sees a SIGNIFIGANT drop off and/or enough of the Major Donors say otherwise, Richt will be here as long as he wants.

In Chip’s interview McGarrity spelled it out pretty clearly:

“I get tons of letters. ‘You need to fire (Todd) Grantham, you need to do this, you need to do that.’ Three years ago it was, ‘you need to fire (Mike) Bobo.’ It’s just the soup of the day. But I tell them, I don’t hire assistant coaches. After the LSU game, it was totally different. It’s amazing, the swing of emotions people have. I wish I saved them all. Even during games people are emailing me. Those are the ones I wish I could read back to them because people are so reactionary. There are so many ways of technology to get to people. It’s our world today and we’re living in it. We shouldn’t be surprised what anybody does any more. Sometimes people do irrational things. But it’s our world and nothing surprises me these days. We just have to manage the best we can.” – See more at: http://ugasports.blog.ajc.com/2014/01/08/fans-have-let-georgia-ad-mcgarity-know-how-they-feel/#sthash.ATqcO1FO.dpuf

Big Time Donors don’t write letters, folks, they pick up the phone or ride up to Athens and speak directly with the man.

Btw – Forbes ranked college football’s most valuable programs, UGA came in #8 behind -in order 1-7, Texas, Notre Dame, Bama, LSU, Michigan, Florida, and Oklahoma.

8. Georgia Bulldogs

Team value: $91 million
Revenue: $66 million
Profit: $40 million
Conference: SEC
Head coach: Mark Richt

Last year the Bulldogs collected $22.5 million from ticket sales and another $28 million from contributions, highlighting how important a loyal alumni base can be to a team’s financial success. The athletic department contributed $4 million back to academic programming.

Richt’s teams always wind up lower at the end of the season than their preseason rankings. That’s because he and his coaching staff are probably the most inept in all of major NCAA teams.

This past year we went from preseason #5 to postseason zero–not even an also considered vote. 2014 will be no different. The only difference is last year we had the SEC all-time record holding QB, while this coming year we’ve got Hutson Mason who is really too slow and not mobile enough to survive. Also, next years’ OL will be rookies for the most part…

He’ll just be the guy that coached Georgia along time but didn’t have a damn thing to show for it while his chief competition was winning titles. He’ll be know as a C+ coach at best. It was front page news when Mack Brown retired. It’ll be a little blurb on the ESPN ticker at the bottom of the screen when Richt retires, at best. No one will care.

One week after our disappointing and ( for me) yet unexplainable loss to Nebraska, looking forward to the complete unknown that the 2014 season will present. I completely agree with so may of the posts that suggests the tenet of, ‘…being careful for what you wish for…’ re coaching changes. Bowden, Dooley, Paterno, Dye, Bryant, Carroll, Miles or even Saban never have, nor will win 4 or more Conf championships or NCs in a 10 year stretch.

A lot more parity out there because of what Jax34 eluded…money. Next year, the SeC will have its own tv network….and take a look at the 35-50 colleges / univ that have played live network tv more in the last 2-3 years versus combined previous 50-60 years…that all equals revenue and cash infusion… That makes smaller programs as attractive for both ’student’ athletes as well as those focused on a shot at the pros…obviously along with newer and modern facilities…even if just for a an entire student body of 3-5k

You are more than right. Our o-line recruiting has been pretty bad. Other SEC teams have beat us out in this category, and it will show in the next couple of years. Our o-line is extremely “average” and has been exposed by the better teams. Nebraska, who did not have that good a defense whooped us good up front. We must recruit (and coach) better on the o-line. This is where it starts.

old dog

January 10th, 2014

Our special teams performance was especially bad. Is there a new rule at UGA that you have to put somebody back there who cannot catch a punt? We tried that one out several times. We had some terrible snaps earlier this year, and the long snapper has one and only one job. Our kicker was good, but special teams is much more than an accurate kicker.
I know that nobody can win it all every year, and I do not feel that most folks on this blog think otherwise. But when there are glaring (even to the casual fan) problems that are not being addressed at all it is dis-heartning Some of the long-term problems (poor o-line recruiting, for one) still are not being addressed as well, and this has been common knowlege to all. Folks are going to appreciate Murray later when next year Mason has to perform behind a less-than-stellar group.
On defense, nothing more needs to be said. We are having way too much trouble teaching/coaching the present system. We need to wipe the slate clean here. Even when the team is as young on D as ours was, they should be more well-versed on the fundamentals. We were completely lost too many times to simply call it youth……

old dog,

I agree with everything you have said. One point that I would like to make about ST’s…. If CMR could keep 85 scholarship players on his team year in and year out he could have more bodies that may be able to help there. But he can’t seem to do it. He has to give 10-15 walk-ons scholarships just to make our team look whole. But most simply cannot play.

I never hear anyone ask why CMR can’t keep 85 guys on a team and it seems it doesn’t matter to anyone. We should be recruiting 30 guys this year but we have 16. That is pathetic. Guess how 2 of our best receivers got hurt this year… yep you guessed it…. On punt team. Why are those guys playing punt team? Because we don’t have the numbers that other teams do. ST’s will continue to suffer until we can keep 85 SCHOLARSHIP players on a team.

JaxDawg: Exellent comments. You provided relevant facts, levelheadedness, and justifiable conclusions. Fans, and I’m one, are too caught up in “its just about championships, isn’t it ?”
Well, it isn’t. We need to be reminded of that and you just did it.
A relevant example is the Dallas Cowboys who haven’t sniffed a championship in years. Yet they play in the Taj Mahal of football palaces and are probably still the most valuable franchise in sports.

JaxDawg’s levelheadness is the star entry in this blog. The point is that reality, not emotion, rules
the roost as it should. There are, however, two emotional points that will kill a UGA coach fast and they are these
1. Losing to Tech three or more years in a row
2. Having a non-top 10 recruiting season which just happened. I don’t think this is a big deal but UGA fandom does.

How in the good holy hell is it “levelheaded” to accuse other programs of cheating without a shred of freaking evidence to back it up, which is EXACTLY what JaxDawg did? Since you Kool Aiders are so “levelheaded,” please explain that one for me.

Here is a great stat for all of the UGA Homers out there today….

2.92- Average punt return this year-next to last this year barely in front of Cal.

18.92- Average kick off return this year-dead last in country.

These stats greatly hurt us on both offense and defense.

Since you’ve got such a big mouth on you, maybe you can explain to me how Auburn, LSU, Bama, Florida and FSU can play for titles but we can’t? What am I missing here Mr. Super Fan? Are they better than us? I don’t think they are. Am I wrong about that Mr. Super Fan?

Bama has won titles lately but all the others, nope. We played in a national semifinal 1 year ago with the same coach who you say can’t compete. And I am not making anything up. All you retards have guaranteed that Muschamp, Mullen, Kiffin, Dooley and others, if brought to Athens or to another SEC school, would win a title. Yet none of them have. So you and all the other whiny little turnip brained girls can keep griping and complaining and coming up with all these guaranteed answers that don’t work. ….and lost. National semifinal? We backed in to the SECCG because South Carolina, who beat the snot out of us, had to play at LSU and we then gave up 350 yards rushing to Bama in a game we were only in because of a blocked kick and the heroics of Aaron Murray. This is as close as Richt has come in 13 years. Auburn has went undefeated twice and played in two BCS title games. LSU has played in two since Richt became our coach. FSU has now won one.

Lakotas leaving won’t matter much. It is the scheme and the indecision of Grantham. If you go to a game and pay attention, you see confusion on almost every play–it is frustrating–on TV you do not see all the confusion or not as much. A team mate of mine asked me what in the world was UGA doing that created such a “fire Drill” all the time. Unless Grantham simplifies it will be more frustration–it will appear better because of the talented people we have on D.

Dog4Life – I agree, Grantham’s 3-4 doesnt work for UGA. But I believe UGA’s problems are mainly two fold: 1). Coaching – we’ve all identified the problems here. No need for me to explain. 2). Recruiting – this is where we have really been mislead as a fan base. We all know that we recruit skill players on the offensive side of the ball and line backers. What we dont recruit well is DB’s and Olinemen. These are two areas that need extreme attention and I dont see much hope in this incoming class.

dawgfan, speaking of people embarrassing themselves, try looking in the mirror and then go take a reading comp course. In my post, I never specifically called out any program for cheating, other than the examples that have been outlined and proven. There are numerous accounts of overzealous boosters that have a win at all costs mentality. Look no further than the old Southwest Conference in the days of SMU death penalty. All I said was WE don’t have those types of boosters. But to suggest that no one has, does, or is cheating is simply naive on your part. As for excuses, not making any, but just trying to simply explain to all the folks like you who spend a tremendous amount of time b*tchn’ and moaning why it’s not likely to happen, so MAYBE, just MAYBE we can move these blogs to more productive conversations.

Yea your right about Deshaun Watson. From my hometown of Gainesville, Ga. (big red elephants). Dabo at Clemson is not good for UGA. He can’t beat SCU, but he is getting a lot of recruits from Ga. Don’t forget if the “mama who wanted $$” hadn’t gotten involved, then that Nkemdiche kid out of Grayson would have ended up in Clemson. He never even thought about UGA, even though he lived just down 316 from Athens.

Maybe McGarity might actually take some of the emails seriously if people actually sounded like they might not be escapees from mental institutions. I bet 99% of all the negative emails he gets make no more sense than the rabid squirrel rants that I’ve seen on these blogs.

When you are trying to get results it is a bad idea to pile every last complaint into a single email, you know? You might actually get his attention if you didn’t use phrases like “Richt will never win a Championship”… that is like screaming “I think you are retarded” right before asking your boss for a raise.

McGarity obviously think that Mark Richt will win a championship so if you want to get through to him it would be better to try a different tact.

There is an argument to be made for bluntness but the wording has to flawlessly logical. Very few of the people on these blogs that think the Georgia Bulldogs would be better off without Mark Richt haven’t done much of a job of stating the argument in anything but “that bot is messed up” mode.

DawginColorado,

It’s no use, I laid out the facts and while a few people understood my points – thanks for the support to those few btw, the vast majority just don’t get it.

Until/unless there is a downturn in big donor checks, a reduction in Hartman Fund revenue, ticket sales or merchandise, nothing is going to change. It’s a FACT not an excuse.

McGarrity sits back and laughs at the letters and emails, however he listens to the people who stroke the checks, and if they’re happy and content then he is too. Hell, he even tells you whinners and complainers in this interview:
“It’s amazing, the swing of emotions people have. We just have to manage the best we can.” In that quote he’s talking about the “dawgfan”, and “crowell”, type bloggers: EMOTIONAL, REACTIONARY and IRRATIONAL – McGarrity said that I didn’t, don’t shoot the messenger.

He may say he cares or “hears” the fans because it’s the PC thing to say, but who’s opinion do you think carries more weight, a few hundred complainers who may spend $2000 each over the course of a year or a single booster who can stroke a 2 million dollar check at any given time, and probably gives the 400-500K a year, every year?

MONEY MONEY MONEY is what rules. All you whinners who REALLY want Richt gone, go on Kickstarter and start raising money.

As I said before, the fans/boosters that McGarrity actually listens to and cares about don’t write letters or send emails, they pick up the phone and call or get in their car and drop by. The phone is answered in no more than 2 rings, and he always has time for the ones that drop by.

BigWally I envision it going like this:

BigWally: “hello may I speak to Mr. McGarrity?”

GM’s Admin: “May I say who’s calling?”

BigWally: “Tell em’ it’s Big Wally.”

Admin: “Hold please….Mr. McGarrity, I have a BigWally on the line.”

McGarrity: “BigWally?!…who the hell is that?! tell him I’m not available and just put him through to voicemail.”

Admin: “I’m sorry, Mr. McGarrity isn’t available, may transfer you to his voicemail?”

BigWally: “I’m sorry, tell Mr. McGarrity, it’s BigWally, last night’s mega millions winner. I’m thinking of making a sizable 7-8 figure donation to the athletic dept, and I’d like to speak with him about that and some ideas I have for the football program”

Admin: “Hold please, I’ll tell him….”

McGarrity: “BIG WALLY!!!! My MAN!! How can I help you?”

BigWally: “Well Mr. McGarrity…”

McGarrity: “Please, Please, call me Greg…”

JaxDawg, in the 6th paragraph of your post you clearly imply that teams that win NCs cheat. That’s what I’m referring to, teams that “win at all cost” as you refer to it. None of the specific examples that you provided have a recent NC. This is a common Kool Aider tactic. You pull some vague BS accusations out your arse about teams “winning at all costs” and then when someone calls you out on it you conveniently claim you weren’t accusing anyone of anything.

Did Auburn, LSU, Florida, Bama, or FSU do anything to “win at all costs?” If so, what evidence do you have of this?

You Kool Aiders are a joke.

I’m sorry to see Franklin go… he made the Vandy game a bit more fun. He’ll do well at Penn St. Maybe he’ll get under Urban’s skin up at OSU. They’ll be competing for some of the same recruits. Urban doesn’t like competition.

I guess no one saw the posts about maybe trying to send emails that sound somewhat sane to McGarity? If you look at these blogs, you can see why he’d use terms like “reactionary”. Most of what I’ve seen here looks like a bunch of supposed men that have taken leave of their senses. If those emails he talks about in that interview are like the ramblings I see on here, I can definitely see why he would not take them seriously.

Anybody ever think about that?

The way I see it, the sun will continue to rise if next year is the same as this year or if it ends in a National Championship. If they fire Mark Richt then I’ll pull for the Dogs just the same as I always have. Is the football team where “I” would like it to be? Does that mean that I like it? Hell no I don’t but I’m not going to pop a vein trying to “will” Mike McGarity into firing Mark Richt either.

Lame Kitten is the new OC at Bummer…… never seen a recruiting rules violation he wouldn’t commit. Pimped out those “hostesses” to the recruits while at Tennessee. Overall arse hole. Predict he and Saban will be at odds some where down the road ’cause Lame Kitten is a back stabber and Saban better watch his back.

DawginColorado

I guess the question to ask yourself is what difference would winning a National Championship make in your life? I mean, really, what difference would it make? In the end it will make about as much difference as it did getting that whatever you asked for for Christmas when you were 10 made in your life. Yeah, it was great for a while but can you even remember that now? So if that’s they case why spend so much energy complaining about something you really can’t do a damned thing about?

Seems a bit off kilter to me.

Coach Saban is going to regret this hire. Kiffin is not a team player. He may be a pretty good offensive mind but he is a calamity in waiting. Hiring Kiffin is a booby trap…. you never know when it’s going to blow.

Bad deal…

That’s funny because Kool Aiders think because Richt is a nice guy and supposedly doesn’t “win at all costs” it makes them better people.

Saban hired Kiffin because he wants to win football games. I know that’s a novel concept for you Kool Aiders. He was a disaster of a head coach but he can call some ball plays. With Bama’s usual great offensive line the sky is the limit on what he can do. This was a big time move by a big time program. While Richt is sitting around on his arse tolerating mediocrity out Grantham Saban is going after the best of the best. Kiffin vs. Grantham would be a laugher. We will get utterly destroyed.

Continuity is a good thing.

The 2009 Tennessee loss might be the worst of the Richt era IMO. It was beyond embarassing. They kept running that same roll out play over an over and over again and we were clueless to stop it. Recall that this was a year after Richt said our defensive coaching was “fine” and there would be no changes. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

Continuity is a good thing.

I’m glad Franklin left vandy……because he had turned the tables on Richt….I think vandy will just hire some other coach to whip up on Richt!! The elite teams in the sec never lose to vandy……like Bama….Lsu Texas a&m…..we are not elite and unlike the kool aiders I have known this for a long time! The kool aiders think that we are elite! I don’t know. Vandy might take a sep back. It looks like Butch Jones might have our number though. It’s always going to be something with Richt. You just have to outwork him which isn’t hard. Alot of teams don’t have our talent but if their coaches put in the hours we’re very beatable. We strike fear in no one anymore.

This is Mark Richt Football.

Mosh

January 11th, 2014

The coaching carousel continues and top tier coaches and those with upside get upgraded to storied programs, while this stale, vanilla program stays pat and folds…Mark Richt is the laughing stock of college football and the fans that still buy into his straight and narrow approach to coaching will get a spot in heavan and Orlando at best during bowl time. Richt had his windows of opportunity from ‘02-’07….if he did screw up that home game at SC, that team would have beat LSU and went on to win the championship…even when he got one brief moment of luck in the six putrid years since then, he failed miserably to manage the last minute of the Bama game…folks, he’s a terrible coach and the posts that state he will remain until the money spigot is turned off are sad but true…how these stakeholders in the program cannot see the forest through the trees is beyond me…all you need to know as the measuring stick is that no one, and I mean no one, ever comes calling and says “yeah, Mark Richt would make us a better program”. Never happen and it never will. It’s over and it’s been over for a real long time…..

and Dawg in Colordo: you are exhibit A amongst the Richt apologists and those that approach the program with indifference. That fake high road that you and a few others take in regards to this is comical. I think fans want consistency, success and a little bit of swagger in their coach and program. What Georgia team in the Richt era was truly feared? The only one I can think of was the second half of the ‘07 team. Yeah, this blog is meaningless and everything people write here is nothing more than a sounding board. I’ve been writing about Richt’s demise since 2008 when everyone jumped on me and told me I was crazy…well, crazy is now the order of the day, and if you think Richt will ever sniff another SEC title, let alone get through the gauntlet of the playoff, that is the new crazy….I wish we had a tenth of the swagger of the Bama program because they expect championships and strive for greatness…Richt strives for mediocrity and the weakness of his product is the laughing stock of college football….
