Dawgs must shake ‘been there, done that’ mindset against Cornhuskers

gator bowl logoA Georgia team that has suffered through extremely slow starts in its past couple of games now must get ready for yet another Florida bowl game against the same team they played on New Year’s Day last year.

They’ll be going up against a Nebraska team that also might not be thrilled with its bowl assignment, but which would like to avenge last year’s loss and end a three-bowl losing streak.

Will that make the Cornhuskers the more motivated team in Jacksonville?

True, the Bulldogs are now all talking the talk like the coaches want about respecting Nebraska and being excited about playing in any bowl game, but you’ve got to wonder how many of them are really thinking like receiver Michael Bennett initially did when he learned of UGA’s bowl opponent and tweeted: “Nebraska again? You kidding me?”

Michael Bennett initially wasn't too rah-rah about a rematch with Nebraska. (Associated Press)

Michael Bennett initially wasn't too rah-rah about a rematch with Nebraska. (Associated Press)

Bennett subsequently pulled that tweet down and now is on the bus, noting that he didn’t play in last year’s bowl game and so it will be “interesting” to play the Cornhuskers and he’s “excited about it.” Even if somewhat belatedly.

Bennett wasn’t the only Dog who would have preferred a different opponent. Georgia’s Chris Burnette admitted at this week’s media day that “I was kind of like the other guys who wanted to play Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, or another team we don’t normally get a shot to play against, but at the same time I wasn’t disappointed. I’m just glad we get to play another football game. This is my last go around so I’m not going to sit here and complain about who we’re playing because this is my last shot.”

Even Mark Richt, who is once again touting his boyhood Nebraska fandom in advance of this game, has allowed that he really hoped Georgia would face his alma mater, Miami — a combination that Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Bowl considered and then passed up for Johnny Autograph.

The old saw in college football is that the team that wants it the most usually wins, and Burnette provided the postseason version of that this week when he said, “The team that wants to be there the most is usually the team that’s going to win.”

Or maybe in this case that should be the team that doesn’t want to be there the least.

The Nebraska fan base definitely seems not very juiced about the postseason this year, with news reports noting that Gator Bowl ticket sales are lagging among them and a travel package to Jacksonville was canceled due to lack of interest.

As for Nebraska’s players, they had hoped to be playing Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Arizona, but whiny Bill Snyder reportedly put the kibosh on that because of a past confrontation with Nebraska’s Bo Pelini, so a Michigan team with with a worse record was moved ahead of the Cornhuskers.

Still, if Huskers are also less than thrilled about a rematch with Georgia, they’re doing a better job of hiding it so far. Mostly, they’ve talked about needing a bowl win and remembering last year’s loss to Georgia. The game was tied 31-31 in the fourth quarter before Nebraska fumbled and Georgia pulled away for a 45-31 win. “They just made more plays than we did offensively and defensively,” Nebraska senior defensive end Jason Ankrah told the Lincoln Journal Star. “We didn’t feel they were tougher than us or outschemed us. They just made more plays than we did.”

And while revenge is usually an overrated motivational tool in college football, it does at least give Nebraska a starting point in getting up for the game.

“They’ll definitely remember what happened last year,” observed UGA receiver Chris Conley, a star of Georgia’s win last year.

While we won’t know until New Year’s Day what sort of mindset the Dogs will have, they’re at least saying the right things now about the rematch with Nebraska.

“I think we will get up for it just because it’s another opportunity to represent the Georgia Bulldogs,” Burnette said. “It’s always fun to play the game regardless of who we’re playing. We play the same teams in the SEC every year so I think it’s just like doing that. I think Nebraska is a good team and there’s a lot of good competition there, so we’ll definitely have to be ready for it.”

“We just want to win,” linebacker Amarlo Herrera said. “We had a good comeback win in the last game of the season and we’re riding high. We just want to keep the momentum up going into next year. We just want to win and build up momentum.”

And, noted cornerback Damian Swann, even though it’s the same bowl opponent as last year, “they played us tough. It’s going to be one of those games where we come in and we have to play our best. It’s just another opportunity to put another win in our column, and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”

Sounds good. Let’s just hope Georgia doesn’t have to play the Cardiac Kids role again, waiting until the fourth quarter to get into the game. We’ve already had too much of that this season.

Nebraska has the 4th ranked passing defense in the nation….Gregory their DE is in the top 5 in the big ten with sacks…once again we struggle with another teams best DE.

Well that’s how all of our games have been all season long. Coming into the 4th quarter against Clemson, we were tied 28-28. Coming into the 4th against South Carolina, we led 34-30. Coming into the 3rd quarter against North Texas, we’re tied 21-21. Coming into the 4th against LSU, tied 34-34. Went to OT against Tennessee in Knoxville tied 31-31. Came into the 4th quarter against Mizzou & railed 28-26. Had a 4th quarter collapse against Vanderbilt. Came into the 4th quarter against Florida & had to hold on 23-20. Came into the 3rd quarter against Appalachian State & led 14-6 for a while. Had a 4th quarter collapse against Auburn although we almost had one of the greatest comebacks in UGA history. Tied going into OT against GT 27-27. It’s been a lot of bar-burners, nail-biters, & bizarre finishes this season. A lot of people need to realize that this 2013 season of UGA may have been a disappointment, but we still fought hard through the injuries, the tough schedule, and survived & all the new young defensive players on the backfield. 2013 was not as bad as 2004 or 2008. 2008 there was no excuses, we had players to return from the 2007 team. 2013 was a rebuilding year for UGA if you have a bunch of injuries on offense & have to replace 12 starters on defense. Yet our games were still decided by 7 or less this season. The 2008 UGA team got blown out by Alabama & Florida & collapsed against GT. The 2013 UGA team, had some heart & passion never gave up, never had any blowout losses, they kept fighting!

Bulldawg35,

I agree. The Dawgs will come out flat, play like crap then win the game in the 4th quarter. Seen this one way too many times I guess.

I hate to say this but I am ready for some new blood to come to Athens. CMR is not aggressive enough and the proof is in the 8-4 record and the fact that our recruiting is down plus he can’t keep 85 scholarship players on the team. Fans wonder why our ST’s suck? There is your reason my friends. UGA simply doesn’t have the numbers most teams do. UGA currently has 16 commitments and NSD is in 45 or so days. Tenn has 34 and in a few years will be kicking our asses and UGA will be wondering why.

Not good. I am about ready for the Kirby Smart era to begin. No offense to CMR.

I think the Texas Longhorns search for a new coach is interesting and reveals how the college football world feels about our coaching staff.

They obviously started with Saban, which makes sense. There are about 20 names that are being talked about, most of whom are college coaches today. I have not heard a SINGLE mention of Mark Richt, Bobo, or Grantham for that position. Does anyone else think that this is a problem?

Before you answer with the “Texas isn’t going after Richt because they don’t think they can get him” argument… let’s put that one to rest. They offered Saban the job (he isn’t exactly unemployed or coaching at the little sister’s of the poor”. On their “list” is Les Miles, Malzahn, Urban Meyer, John Gruden, the Harbaugh brothers, etc… all have “dream jobs” so their net is quite wide and they aren’t eliminating people who are unlikely to take the job.

Maybe Richt, Bobo, or Grantham are better coaches than the dozens of candidates that Texas is considering. However, it is obvious, that UT’s PERCEPTION is that Richt and his top two coordinators aren’t worthy of consideration (meaning they aren’t some of the best coaches in college football).

It doesn’t mean that Texas is right or that they are wrong. It does mean that Texas doesn’t think our coaching staff is top notch. There is nobody at ESPN or elsewhere shouting “how can Richt not be considered?” “Texas must be crazy!” Basically, they are nodding their heads and saying “yeah that makes sense, the staff at Georgia including Richt is not among the top 20 candidates.”

I find that very revealing.

A close game in the fourth quarter is likely. The dogs have done it both ways this season: falling behind and then coming back and geting off to a quick start only to give up the lead late.

Not too worried about the recruiting. That bumper class of 33 last year will be the main engine of this team for the next three years. Very dissapointed, however, to see David Sharpe go to Florida. We’re not closing well on those OL recruits. Lost Tunsil to Ole Miss last year after being in the lead for him most of the fall.

I just hope we don’t go into the ‘two down lineman, with two speed rushers standing up on the end and the middle linebackers playing 8 yards deep’ scheme, a.k.a. the Nickel package. When we were in that last year, they racked up 8-10 yards a carry. The RB would be 7 yards up field before we ever laid a hand on him..I’m sure they remember this as well.

Richt to Texas. Nope, they just rid themselves of their Richt. Keep Mack Brown if you would consider Richt. Both have lost that eager, newness of fire and passion. Both great men by the way. Smart football men also. College football is all about motivation and being able to ” out work” the other guys because the talent level of the top 25 is not to far off from being the same. Richt is our Frank Beamer. Good guy, decent coach, gonna have a real good team every now and then and recruit well enough to win 8 or 9 games and go to a warm bowl. 13 years in, what magic have we not seen…….None.

Will that make the Cornhuskers the more motivated team in Jacksonville?

Nebraska is coming off a blow out loss to Iowa, their coach could be fired at any moment, they are playing the same team they played last year, and their fans have only bought 2800 tickets so far. I don’t think there is going to be much motivation on their side of the field. Nebraska also isn’t very good. Barring a complete meltdown, UGA should win this one rather easily, no matter how motivated they are.

Defense will look horrid while Grantham stares at his play sheet and wishes he was somewhere else. Because Georgia’s Defense has overshadowed its Offense Mike Bobo has been overlooked. I think Coach Bobo would bring a new energy to any program as a head coach. He would run a clean program, recruit well, and be there for the long haul. I may be on an island saying I would like to see him become the head coach at UGA when Coach Richt retires. Texas would do well to give Mike Bobo a long hard look.

Since we decided not to re-do the defense, we will all be right back here next year with about the same comments.
“Shoulda done better, but the D just couldn’t consistantly get it done.”
We will make some great plays on d, but from top to bottom we will not be competative enough to be cream-of-the-crop. Our o-line, likewise, will have to play over their heads. For those who pile on Murray, you will realize his accomplishments when he is gone. Mason will be ok, but it will take a game or two to replace a four-year starter.

Nebraska came into the game last year with one of the best pass defenses in the country and we lit them up. Remember? These players need to just enjoy the game, take their free gifts and get ready to watch some games on TV that really matter about who wins.
When you lose to Vanderbilt and NO COACHING CHANGES are announced you have to realize the reality that winning is not the most important outcome at Georgia for McGarity and just enjoy the experience of being in College.

The delusion that CTG’s D will work for us is beyond belief. Jarvis Jones said the D he now plays in in the NFL was much easier to learn..thats a helluva note. We have had NFL players and still could not be consistant. Thinking of a million different possibilities on a play is not good. A “cerebrally-incapacitated” person could tell our guys were lost and out of position much of the time. There is a difference between freshman mistakes, and a lack of knowledge/training etc. It may be the greatest defense in the history of organized athletics, but CTG is unable to teach it and/or get it across. Meanwhile, we are headed towards the bottom of the SEC in defense.

It’s all very troubling if you’re a dawg fan. All the injuries this season, the poor play of the defense and ST’s, questionable play calling and coaching, all add up to lack of confidence in what team will show up to play on game day. This bowl game vs NB reminds me of the rematch w/Mich St. Ga won the first one (all during CRM era) then blew the rematch in OT when our FG kicker just seemed to collapse. He now makes millions w/the Vikings after he got some coaching. That in itself is very revealing. GA will find a way to lose as it has done in all 4 losses this season. NB will be a tough match up as they were last season and now the dawgs face them again w/one of the worst D’s in the SEC. It’ll be another test for Mason as well. He did well vs tech in spite of his D. I suspect GA will be sluggish to start. It may well be another catch up game for the O. You just don’t know what to expect but expect the worst seems to come to mind as revenge is sweet and NB has that edge going for them.

I haven’t exactly been blown away by Mason thus far. Quite frankly, he seemed a little disinterested against Georgia Tech. He just didn’t seem in to it. It’s your first start against a big rival on national television dude. Wake up!!! I get the whole “cool customer” thing that Richt likes to talk up but geez it’s still football. Show a little emotion. Maybe I’m being too hard on the kid. Maybe that’s just his personality. I don’t know. Talent wise I question whether he has the gunslinger ability that is required to run our flag football offense and keep pace with opposing offenses that are running rough shod over our joke D. I mean, Aaron Murray put up video game stats and we still lost almost every big game that we played in. What’s going to happen when we don’t even have that?

I don’t feel too good about it. Sorry.

The problem with Georgia is continuity!!! No new ideas, no new scheme, and no new energy!!! We get the best talent at all positions but where it counts the most in the trenches. Richt just can’t seem to use all the available scholarships. I would take some 3 stars instead of nobody. Richt has been here to long with no national championship and the recruits really take that into consideration. We get alot of the good ones but its because they come in thinking only of themselves. Only hoping to go to the nfl. Its never about coming in to the program to win championships. Time for a change. Sick of Richt!!!

He played “well” but it was Georgia Tech. He didn’t strike me as a guy that’s going to take us to the promised land. Aaron Murray struck me as that kind of guy and the most we could ever muster with him was a Cap One bowl appearance.

No one thought Tee Martin could take Tennersee to heights beyond Peyton Manning–but he did what Peyton couldn’t do–win a NC. One never knows, that is why we play the game–let’s just hope all those bad breaks fall our way for a change–obviously there is no coaching changes in the que–so we have what we have.

I stand corrected.

Today I heard Collin Cowherd talking about Richt as a theoretical candidate for the Texas job. He said something to the effect of “I like Mark Richt, I think he is undervalued, but I wouldn’t put him in the elite category that Texas wants, I put him in that second tier:”

Hard to say if Richt would have been mentioned at all on the show if the caller hadn’t SPECIFICALLY asked “what do you think of Richt going to Texas as a possibility”. Cowherd gave him about as favorable a rating as one could expect.

Sometimes I wonder why certain skilled QBs come to UGA. 1) It is a read pro style offense–Bobo calls more of the audibles at the line than the QB does–notice how they all look to the side lines. However, a lot of teams do this. 2) The QB must be a true drop back for success in this offenses and must have a good throwing arm–not necessarily excellent but good. 3) must be able to read D and go calmly through progressions. 4) CMR is not going to let Fauta beat out Mason–Mason is a veteran in the style offense and has been a DGD and will play. He is loyal to those loyal to the program (Joe T III, JOe Cox etc…) We shall see.

For the record, Cowherd is a dysfunctional dweeb who thinks his mixed up past somehow gives him better insight than anyone other sports show host–he is to full of himself–several years he also said that CMR and UGA were just reloaders of talent and thatothers could only hope to be as good as Richt–so it depends on the sports winds as to which way Cowherd leans–a true politician.

Q

December 20th, 2013

When Murray had a 160 or worse passer efficiency, we went 1-4 in 2013.
155. Clemson, Loss
122, Mizzou, Loss
84, Vanderbilt, Loss
147, Auburn, Loss
129, Tenn, 3 point Win

Hutson has gone 160, 169, and 143 in his 1st 3 appearances. Projecting out, that means 2 out of 3 of his games (8 games) he’ll put up 160 or worse, which means, the team could lose 67% of those 8 games, 5 losses in 2014 due to his anemic passer efficiency. He is accurate, but he is throwing too many interceptions. Murray had a 3 to 1 td to int ratio in 2013, where Mason’s is 2 to 1 in 2013.

Going to be a 7-5 type of year with Mason, he just throws too many picks. Joe Cox Jr.

Q

December 20th, 2013
8:52 am

When Murray put up poor QBR’s, we always lost the game.
QBR:
61, Clemson
57, Mizzou,
48, Vandy
74, Auburn

Hutson put up a 62 against GT. A guaranteed loss against a better defense.

GT has a 82nd ranked pass defense, but Nebraska is ranked #22 in pass defense. So Hutson will get his 1st loss next week.

Q

December 20th, 2013
9:04 am

I project Mason to end up in 2014 with this statline:
20 td’s, 10 int’s, 62% accurate, 7-5 record

Note: This is simply projecting out what he did in 2013 into 2014. He threw a td every 18 passes, and threw an int every 36 passes and was 61% accurate against the 82nd ranked pass defense. His passer effic and qbr projects out to be 160 or below 8 games, since the UGA team lost 80% of games when Murray went below 160, 2014 will resulting in 5 losses.

Q

December 20th, 2013
9:11 am

Joe Cox ended up with this statline in 2009:
24 td’s, 15 int’s, 331 passes, 55% accurate, 7-5 record

Joe finished #5 in interceptions in the NCAA.

Gutrake:

That is quite a generalization. You can’t be smart and listen to a particular sports radio show in your car? I’m not saying that Cowherd is the final authority on all things sports, but he is usually well informed and balanced in his views.

The only reason I brought him up is that earlier I had posted that NOBODY was talking about Richt to Texas as a possibility on a national level. Then, a couple of days later, somebody DID. Cowherd is relevant in that he has a successful sports radio program that a lot of people listen to. I agree that he is full of himself, but not as much as Dan Patrick.

He didn’t say Richt is one of the top coaches, he didn’t say that Richt is a bum. Actually, he probably got it about right in my humble opinion.

Q

December 20th, 2013
9:19 am

Looking at the last 2 UGA Qb’s, both struggled their 1st full season as a starter.

Murray’s record was 6-6
Joe Cox went 7-5.

Looking at 6-7 wins for Hutson Mason in his 1st full year as a UGA starter.

Q

December 20th, 2013
9:24 am

As far as the Bowl game goes, who knows, Murray lost his 1st Bowl game, but Joe Cox won his 1st Bowl game, so maybe a 50/50 shot at winning the Bowl game

Murray in his 1st Bowl game:
55%, 0 td’s, 2 int’s, Loss

Cox in his 1st bowl game:
53%, 2 td’s, 1 int, Win

Look for Hutson to put up similar numbers in his 1st Bowl start, it’s the Georgia way.

Q

December 20th, 2013
9:30 am

I see a 5-6 loss regular season for UGA in 2014 like 1st year starters Murray & Cox:

Auburn

Q

December 20th, 2013

Oh yeah, Florida too.
Clemson

Tenn
Vandy
Mizzou
Ark
Florida
Auburn

Tenn, Ark & UF are winnable games, even with an inexperienced 1st year starter at Qb like Hutson Mason. But will likely lose 1-2 of those 3, probably to Tenn or UF. The other 5 above, Clemson, SC, Mizzou, Vandy, Aub, 5 losses.

Mark Dantonio HC at Michigan State (6 years) has been rumored to be on the short list for the Texas job but says he is happy where he is. Texas can double what he is making without
breaking a sweat.

My man Pat Narduzzi (DC) @ Michigan State was just voted the NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year….. and Mike Bobo was voted the OC of the year. Congrats to both.

Pat Narduzzi says he will be back at Michigan State next year and is happy there… said if he was only half happy he would consider a change. Is that putting out feelers? Probably not but sounds like he could be persuaded with the right situation.

One more year at Michigan State would put Narduzzi on the same timeline as Grantham – one more year. Richt needs to pay attention….. and I am sure it has crossed his mind but would Narduzzi come to UGA (for a substantial raise) when Richt is being under attack?

Best chance of getting Narduzzi is getting the guy that hired him as DC …his HC Mark Dantonio.
Still Richt needs to get his ducks in order. Keeping Bobo as OC is a must and he’s being considered as a HC by several schools as we speak. Adding Narduzzi as DC would give Richt the best OC and DC in the SEC. Just food for thought.

I think Vanderbilt and Florida will take advantage of our tendency to ignore the turnover margin, so we’ll lose those 2 also. GT also played us much tougher in 2013, might be a loss there, that’s a sneaky game. Could be at best 7-5 record, most likely 6-6, and at worst, 5-7. Look at other Georgia first year quarterbacks, Cox & Murray, both struggled in year one, won either 6 or 7 games in the regular season.

Based off of talent alone UGA should be an 11 win team easily. Then I look over at our S&C program and our ST’s coach and I bring it back to 8 wins again.

Please note there is NO ST’s coach at UGA. Also note UGA has had the worst ST’s in the country since 2008.

How about a 4th quarter rally against Auburn? They didn’t line it up and blow us off the ball now did they? They lucked out and ESCAPED.

C’mon man… if you are going put that stuff out there you have to back it up. It’s all TALK otherwise. If you are such an INSIDER why are you stating 4 year old stuff? How about somebody telling you last WEEK that the S&C program sucks? Well?

ZZBottom:
Great analysis. You’re onto something there.

Here’s how you beat UGA:
1- Get a lead–this forces UGA to abandon the run, which Bobo is quick to do if behind
(Interception turnovers are the best way to jump out to a lead as UGA doesn’t coach turnover margin and as such, consistently rank among the bottom of the SEC in interceptions)
2- force UGA to pass, play strong pass defense schemes, but disguise blitzes
3- Vary pressure from the dline and vary lb coverage
4- Sacks–UGA consistently ranks 7th or worse in sacks allowed–so make them pay for passing the ball–you can sack them with a 3 man or 4 man rush like Missourri did

UGA’s Achilles hill is offensive turnovers and sacks allowed. They don’t coach ball protection so their guys always rank 7th or worse in the SEC in turnovers lost AND sacks allowed.

UGA Qb’s throw a LOT of interceptions, even on their own side of the field (50% of the time).

This 3 step formula results in a passing efficiency rating of below 160, which results in a win 80% of the time vs UGA.

1 step formula for beating UGA:
Render the passer ineffective.

Romper

Another Achilles hill of UGA: SPECIAL TEAMS

They don’t even have a special teams coach. They just don’t coach it. So make them pay. Work on kick off return and punt return and you can get some easy scores (see LSU and South Carolina vs UGA in 2012). They rarely let their punt returner run it, so commit to punt block most of the time if past the 40 yardline.

Dum bass!!

Ahem!…Aside from goosing little 35, I have to say…

You guys are wrong about Mason. In case you missed my words of wisdom last week, I say he is “Ice Water”(Kool-Aid to you doo-doo heads…) You have to look at his eyes and see what I’m talking about. If you had the gift of discerning judgment that I have, you would understand.

Put it this way…by the time he is done next year, you will be pounding on Richt’s inability to recognize a great quarterback earlier! Your red meat will be served to your high-chairs on a silver platter. Greene had the same look in his eyes. Mason will shock you infidels with his composure and sixth sense. Mark these words. For I have spoken!

Romper

December 20th, 2013

Another tip:
UGA defense doesn’t coach stripping the ball. So always use a stiffarm, you don’t need both hands to protect the ball, because they are coached only to make the tackle. They are among the worst in the nation at forcing fumbles. Make them pay.

Romper

December 20th, 2013

Achilles hill of UGA:
Inexperienced Qb

You saw what happened with Joe Cox. Well, believe it or not, Richt made the same mistake twice. He hasn’t gotten Hutson Mason any reps, so he’s inexperienced. Even a Tech pass defense ranked 83rd in the 1st half made Mason look like a Jr high Qb, He’s easy to rattle. Sack him, pressure him, he panics and throws picks. GT sacked him 5x in the 1st half alone. he’s not mobile and UGA doesn’t like their Qb’s to run. You can also disguise defense, he doesn’t have the game experience to handle it.

make UGA pass to beat you. make Hutson Mason win the game. He has no experience. Do not allow Gurley to get yards on the ground.

On Gurley, he’s a 1st half back, out of condition. So commit to him closely in the 1st half, he doesn’t do much in the 3rd and 4th quarters usually.

Watch out for Bennett on 3rd down, double him.

Also, his touchdowns decrease from 5 in quarters 1 and 2 to 3 in quarters 3 and 4.

Thing worries me is Mark Richt has a shoddy record with first year starting quarterbacks. Richt’s team had a record of 7-5 with Joe Cox in 2009, then followed it with a record of 6-6 in 2010 with Aaron Murray.

I don’t see how this is any different. I think Richt’s team goes 7-5 with Hutson Mason in 2014, then 6-6 with another first year starter in 2015, maybe Jacob Park or Faton Bauta.

So, unless your head’s in the sand and you weren’t paying attention in 2009-2010, the next two years don’t look good for Georgia.

There have been 5 times Mark Richt has had a first year starter at Qb. 4 of 5 times it was a terrible year, only exception was DJ and he got a lot of experience the year before and it paid off.

2001, David Greene, 8-4 record
2005, DJ Shokley had a great year and won the SEC but he had a lot of experience coming into the season
2006, Stafford, another terrible year
2009, Cox, terrible season
2010, Murray, terrible season
2014, Mason?
2015, Bauta or Park?

2014 & 2015 will be 6-6, 7-5, or 8-4 seasons. History shows the way.

It’s all down hill from there.
