Saturday night’s alright with Todd Gurley, ‘Free Bird’ and Goooooldberg!

Todd Gurley looks to be nearly back at full speed. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Todd Gurley looks to be nearly back at full speed. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more observations from Saturday night’s bittersweet win over Kentucky and a couple of early thoughts on this week’s game against the erstwhile Golden Tornado …

Shaking off the disappointment over the loss for the rest of the season of Aaron Murray, it was impressive enough that 11 different Bulldogs caught passes Saturday night and nine different players ran the ball. But I especially liked it that, besides placekicker Marshall Morgan, six different Dogs scored against the Wildcats: Rhett McGowan, Todd Gurley (twice), Artie Lynch (twice), Hutson Mason, J.J. Green and Brendan Douglas. Gurley seems to be nearly back at full speed, which is the best news the Bulldog offense has had in weeks. …

The awfulness of Kentucky made it a bit difficult to judge just how much improved the Georgia defense was, but they did manage to hold the Cats to 211 yards of offense, and as Todd Grantham pointed out, 69 of those yards came on one run for a touchdown and the final Kentucky drive for a TD was against Bulldog reserves.

Georgia's defense, with Amarlo Herrera, Jordan Jenkins and Ramik Wilson, had its best game of the season. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Georgia's defense, with Amarlo Herrera, Jordan Jenkins and Ramik Wilson, had its best game of the season. (Jason Getz / AJC)

As usual, Ramik Wilson was everywhere, making nine tackles, but I was really glad to see senior Garrison Smith have a big night in his last game Between the Hedges, making seven stops (including three tackles for loss), two sacks and two forced fumbles. And Josh Harvey-Clemons bounced back nicely from his didn’t-bat-it-down moment against Auburn by making five tackles (two for loss) and getting two fumble recoveries, one of which he forced.

On the other hand, let’s hope whoever was out of position on that long running touchdown by the Wildcats gets it figured out this week before facing Georgia Tech, whose triple-option thrives on such errors. …

This is the sort of night it was for the visitors: In the third quarter with the Wildcats facing a fourth-and-2, Georgia’s defense was again late getting its signal and looked completely disorganized (will that situation ever get cleared up?), only to have Kentucky benevolently call timeout. And then, when play resumed, the Cats got called for a false start. So, on fourth-and-7, the Dogs blitzed, the Wildcats fumbled, and Harvey-Clemons recovered the ball. …

Another thing that impressed me Saturday night was Mike Bobo’s aggressive playcalling, especially in the first half. With Georgia taking the ball rather than deferring their choice to the second half for the first time in six opportunities this season when winning the coin toss, the Dogs came out throwing (after getting great field position thanks to a 41-yard kickoff return by Sheldon Dawson), including the big pass to Gurley, who seems to have become Georgia’s most dangerous receiver.

Hutson Mason after replacing an injured Aaron Murray at quarterback. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Hutson Mason after replacing an injured Aaron Murray at quarterback. (Jason Getz / AJC)

And then, when Kentucky had the ball after Murray’s injury, Georgia used its timeouts to save clock late in the first half for another quick scoring drive led by his replacement, Mason. Well done! …

The choice of pre-game honorary captain for the Dogs brought back fond memories of my son’s junior high days as a pro wrasslin’ fan: Bill Goooooldberg!

Several relatively recent former Dogs were on the sideline and were shown on the video screen to applause, with the biggest ovation for A.J. Green, now of the Cincinnati Bengals. …

Just wondering: Could ESPNU have bunched more TV timeouts together in the first half? …

You know the running bit about somebody at a concert always hollering “Play ‘Free Bird,’” no matter who the act is? Well, the Redcoat Band finally did play “Free Bird” in its Southern rock-themed halftime show. And it sounded pretty great. …

One Bulldog did manage to take the field in a black jersey Saturday night: Russ

The fans at Sanford Stadium say it all ... (Jason Getz / AJC)

The fans at Sanford Stadium say it all ... (Jason Getz / AJC)

And kudos to UGA students for their spirit this past week. They not only were the main boosters of the fan Blackout, they also showed up early and, even more impressively, stayed late. With the game well in hand and the scrubs on the field in the fourth quarter, the stands had largely thinned out — but the student section was still packed tight. Go students! …

Looking ahead, I feel pretty good about Georgia’s offensive chances against the Yellow Jackets with Mason at QB. Basically, I feel good about Georgia’s offensive chances against anyone as long as Gurley and Michael Bennett are in the lineup.

My main concerns about the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field (a venue that falls far short of its grandiose appellation) are the defense staying in their gaps and playing assignment football, Grantham calling an aggressive game that disrupts the Tech exchange or pitch in the backfield (where the Jackets have been known to put the ball on the ground a few times) and, most importantly, (let’s all say it together) no special teams mishaps!

We’ll take a closer look at the game with Tech later in the week, but feel free to offer your own thoughts on the upcoming matchup.

Get well soon, Aaron!

Go Dogs! Wreck Tech!

Need someone for next season who can actually kick the ball through the end zone. Morgan is GREAT for field goals, but terrible at kicking the ball off. Need a special teams coach. Need Grantham gone.

After. Nick Fairley, the cheap shot from mongo, that outrageous gator helmet twist, that joker from Alabama in the championship game, some uncalled late body slam from an unsuspecting Kentucky Defensive lineman took away the final days of our Great Aaron Murray! All hail the SEC referees, (we call leaping, but not roughing) a new level is incompetence is eastablised. Regardless of the injury to Murray, on your own minds, or on video, compare the Ray Drew run into with the Aaron Murray body slam,or those uncalled listed above, and tell me that there is no bias against the dogs by the SEC referees!

My favorite thing about Alabama is when they come back 3 or 4 years later and strip them of wins and titles because of repeated cheating! It will happen again as soon as Saban leaves for USC! But then again, there is not much else to do but cheat and go to games! RTR

Bill, I believe the situation you refer to with the Wildcats facing fourth and 2. and our D looking puzzeled and out of position was due to Kentucky having sent in substitutes late, thus the official stood over the ball and gave us enough time to substitute as well………..that’s the rule………while I’ve seen confusion with the Dthis season………….this particular situation, to me was understandable. What impressed you the most was Bobo’s aggressive play calling in the first half. I want to know why we haven’t been doing that every game? If we had done that in the Vanderbilt and Auburn games we would have won both games. I praised Bobo last year for the changes he made and success he had in becoming a decent Offensive Coordinator for the first time.
With the Offensive studs we had this year he should have set up the run by aggressively throwing the ball from the first series. We knew the Offense was going to have to take up the slack of the Defense because they were so young and inexperienced and Bobo’s stubbornness of always establishing the run first cost us 2 of the losses for sure and maybe a third. Very disappointed that Bobo missed his opportunity to show he will adjust to his strengths. Definitely, regressed this year.

As much as I dont like Tidey Trolls on our site. He right that we got to get rid of Adams-Morehead rules that keeps us from signing enough good players each year when some turns out stinkys that needs be cut from team.

But enough on that as it time to smash bugs. They will be paying for Murray being hurt as Dawgs show how much Murray means to team and hope he get well. We make pestky bugs show how bad they play gimmickey football against real men like Dawgs. They more like a high school team from low class ACC and not able competes with Dawgs that have NFL talents and skills of players. Lack of aggressive play calling has killed us in the past. Noting in one article they were considering putting more emphasis on passes to Gurley seems to be taking away from the run. Defenses scout the fact that we pass more and we never use the fb except three times a year to run the ball. We do not have a running qb to include them as other teams use them as runners. I have never understood the lack of using the fb as an option.other than the SC game and the Clemson game. That gives more pressure on the defenses.

bubba4dawgs

It all starts with the OL and DL and I’m not seeing that shape up in the recruiting department. We do well getting rb’s, qb’s and receivers. We need the total package not a half team.

Good luck to Murray! God bless him! We’ve not seen a sounder more complete dawg at Georgia in quite a while. I wish him well with hopes of seeing him play on Sunday. One of the NFL teams will do well to get him!

Dawgs need to hunker down and take care of the bugs in Atlanta! Finish off strong! Come out aggressive and stay that way all thru the game, mixing Gurley with runs and passes. GO DAWGS!!

Wow, Lack of aggressiveness in play calling has killed us in the past. It amazes me that we only used the fb pass maybe three times all year and one article stated using Gurley more in the passing game. Using the fb in the running game will be a positive to set up passing to the fb. It really seems a waste not to use the FB to run the ball more especially if he is 265.

I’ll say this: as somebody who has been critical of the students participation in the past. They held up their end of the deal this year. And specifically this weekend, have added a lot of interest to the games.

Their choral rendition of Journey, and the orchestrated shaker visual during “in the air” was very entertaining. They have been on time, loud, and stayed till the end all year long. Way to go, students.

The higher up ADM crowd, the Regents, the Professors all the way down to GA AD, desire a “competitive” football team. Frankly, this “new” attitude toward football dates back to the late 80s with UGA President Terry Knapp. His vision, which today is STILL the vision, is to make UGA more akin ACADEMICALLY to UNC and UVA. They do not want to be Alabama or UT. even Florida has moved away from SEC king of football. Vanderbilt is NOW GA’s and Florida’s rival, sadly.

I think Georgia will move the ball and score plenty of points with Mason as the QB and with Gurley and a few healthy receivers now. Not that he will necessarily do better than Murray, but I think he will do just fine and the OL and playmakers will be looking to help him out in his first start.

I’m not worried about that side of the ball especially against tech’s D. Our defense is another story. Will we give up 10-15 play scoring drives and get worn down? That is the part that scares me about this week’s tilt .

One More Time: Academics hindered the program in the late 80’s and early 90’s, but Georgia has figured it out. We get PLENTY of big time players and sure there are some guys that we would want that can’t make it in, but that is the case at a lot of schools and having smart players like Murray, Cox, Ben Watson, the Stinchombs , Keith Marshall etc.. etc… is a good thing.

Early in Goff’s tenure, we had a lot of players flunk out and become ineligible, especially on the defensive side of the ball which was weak to begin with. It didn’t hurt Donnan or Richt at all.

No defense and bad special teams equals no championship. It’s not all about offense. I don’t see either unit being that much better next year.

I disagree that Richt is tired of Coaching. It has just been a long year with all the major injuries. The off season will get Richt perked up again. When my kids were 15 , 17 and 21 years old I had a chance to make a lot more money moving out of State but turned it down because I knew I would be a suitcase Dad. My kids didn’t want to leave all their friends and my wife had a great job . Georgia has the Hope Scholarship which the State I was going too didn’t so my wife would have had to stay to maintain a residence in the State of Georgia to take advantage of that but maintaining two residence would have defeated the purpose of moving for the money.
Richt has a 23 ,19,17 and 16 year old. Richt would definitely not leave and take another Coaching job . He would leave to do mission work or something along those lines. When he leaves he will leave Coaching behind. Richt’s 16 year old will stay with him and his wife or close by for a long time because of her medical problem but the 17 year old will need financial assistance for at least 4 to 7 years depending on if he go’s to Graduate school. As long as they are going to College or school they can stay under Richt’s medical policy until 26 years old. I just don’t see him leaving before 7 years. Too many financial obligations.

Let’s break that down a little. Let’s say he makes 4 Million. He pay’s Social Security, State and Federal tax of approx. 52%. That leaves 1.9 Million. I can’t confirm but I have read he and his wife give away 1 Million a year to Church and many other Charities. That leaves $900,000. He has a lot less disposable money than you think after household expense, Children expenses and Property Tax. I’m sure he max’s out of retirement contributions . After all Expenses and spending I bet he does save more than $500,000 a year , if that. Now to me that would be a ton of money but he and his wife may wan’t to maintain huge give out’s after he retires and pay their own expense concerning Mission projects. 4 Million doesn’t go as far as you think when you are as generous as he and his wife.

Your math is a little off in that a $1,000,000 contribution on $4 million in income would mean their tax liability would be based on $3,000,000 of income, so they should be able to save closer to $1,000,000 per year even if they spent $500,000 per year on living expenses. A $4,000,000 income is a boatload of money, particularly in Athens, GA for a couple that is not very flashy like the Richts. I can’t picture her spending a ton of money on clothes and jewelry like a Kardashian.

He has been making a lot of money for 13 years, so even if you assume that he wasn’t able to save any money while at FSU… he certainly has been putting away money ever year since becoming a head coach.

If he were to retire from coaching, they certainly couldn’t continue to give away $1,000,000 to charity, but they would be comfortable. He may want to coach 20 more years, I don’t know, but he has to have a nice nest egg built up.

Expectations at UGAmin ANY SPORT, EXCEPT GM DOGS, is to try to do well andnmake a nice run. keep the majority of CONTRIBUTORS happy. All the while, boosting UGA as a research institution. Most of you bloggers are clueless about that aspect of UGA’s ACADEMIC PROWESS. UGA receives TONS and TONS of grant money in many disparate fields. No, I am not talking about dopey loser Obama money.

Football? Gives the boys and girls in the IVORY TOWER in the ADM offices something to get excited about on cool Athens weekends. SEC CG? if it ever happens, they would say great. It is NOT an expectation, so CMR rocks caually along at 8-4, 10-2 and we all eat some bar b q in the tailgate of our Range Rovers.

We had this discussion on a few blogs last week. The crux of those were, 10-2, 9-3 seasons are well more than profitable from a business standpoint thus, those looking to see a coach fired for 10-2, 9-3 or even 8-4 seasons are likely pe-ossing in the wind. Moan and groan about it on blogs or elsewhere all you wish. If the program is profitable, from a management standpoint, it is successful and so is the coach

Some things I just don’t get. When we have a huge lead on Kentucky, the Dawgs will put in 5th string receivers to get experience, but they used the 1st string special teams all the way to the end. Why not try looking at some other people during the opportunity to build up a weak area such as special teams. At least give some people that have worked hard on the scout team and seniors the chance to play. Why not let Gazaway (a senior) snap a PAT on senior night when there is a 40 point lead. I watched Beless kick a 50+ yard FG in warm ups and at least 40 kick offs to the receivers warming up, but they don’t let him do a kick off when Morgan was putting them to the 10 yard line? I think they need a special teams coach that will care about this portion of the game rather than only notice after another mistake.

Folks who watch ball realize the following:
1. Murray played behind a questionable o-line; thats why the big games were tough on him. The better teams knew our line was a weak point and exploited it. Only exceptional skill players (whose injuries decimated us) allowed us to win what we did. We absolutely must do better recruiting up front.
2. The defense just has not been too good. Even when we had NFL caliber players, we gave up too many plays and certainly appeared lost much of the time. Yes, we were young this year, but this system will not work for UGA. Murray was often put in a position that he had to outscore folks. Then, the D did not step up when the o got bitten by the injury bug.
3. Special teams laid an egg……mistake after mistake. Putting folks back there who cannot catch a punt. Terrible snaps on chip-shot field goals and on punts that we needed a good kick badly on.
Point is, it is insane to blame Murray for what he had to work with. While recruiting can help our o-line, our d needs much more than maturity…….. either we do not have the folks to run it, or it is not taught properly. I fear the latter as often as our guys have appeared lost and as many third downs as we have given up. We need to wipe the d-slate clean…and run a defense that plays big-boy football.

I’m glad that Mason will be Quarterbacking the last game and our Bowl game. It will be a good test to see if he can lead our team. With the player s that we have Georgia should beat Georgia Tech by 3 touchdowns and will Probably play a Big 10 team with 3 losses in a Bowl game which we should win by 2 or 3 touchdowns.
Georgia lose to the number 4 team , 5 and number 6 teams in the Nation by least than a touchdown. Actually, 2 touchdowns by Missouri. The only fluke loss was Vanderbilt and a lot of things had to line up to loss that game. We win if the Targeting call is never made on Wilson and after review everybody agrees it should have never been called. It was a perfect tackle and it cost us the win. Yes a lot more contributed but if the other things hadn’t happened we would have won by 4 touchdowns.
Georgia , by far is the best 4 lose team in America and if Mason plays like we all hope he will , Georgia will blow out whoever they match us with .
If Mason lays an egg the last 2 games then I hope that Richt and Bobo will give Park and Ramsey a fair chance as our leader next year. Either way I think Georgia is covered as far as a Quarterback is concerned next year.

3. You want to talk about turncoat how about looking at our DC, you know; the guy who put the program in limbo the last 2 years interviewing for another job in the NFL.

4. Muschamp is a way better DC than we have had since Russel;

Actually I agree with you about Grantham. His job is to get them ready to play for Georgia and be productive as early as possible WHILE THEY ARE STILL AT GEORGIA. If he stays at Georgia for next year I hope he will simplify everything on the Defense and let the NFL do some of the work when our players get there. We all know where this is going, special teams aren’t going to be perfect either. Defense won’t be shutting down everyone. Problem with our team is we are purely one dimensional, and we are missing the key ingredient to that dimension.

Richt has survived on good skill players beating average to below average opponents. Our coaching staff is just average in their ability to coach their players up, and their strategy and decision making on game day.

Florida is an Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback away from being a great team. They could fix that this year . I hope Muscamp doesn’t think that way because Foley wants him to succeed so badly that he would fork over whatever Myscamp would need to get a top Offensive Coordinator there. Then he would Recruit the entire nation for a top Quarterback , like Spurrier did and then Florida would be back. Something I’m not ready to deal with until Richt realizes that we need some serous changes on Defense. Grantham, Olivadotti and Lakatos have all done sub-par work this year. Grantham leaving may solve Olivadotti and Lakatos’s problem’s but Olivadotti has never been very good at Recruiting so I think we can do better there. On the Offense I think we can do better than Friend as Offensive Line Coach. Standing pat for another year is certainly not the answer.

Problem I see as long as Richt is here is that he may not be able to get any of the top notch DC to come to Athens. Someone mentioned Manny Diaz the other day, he’s put some good defenses together, some with a whole lot less talent than we have at Georgia. He might be a viable candidate if Richt were interested.

I still stick by my source that says Richt is seriously thinking about leaving next year. If that’s so all probability points to the exact same staff, unless one of them wants to bail and has an offer.

HCMR needs to begin grooming someone to take over as OC, HC jobs will be open for Bobo if he wants to leave. Mason is going to do good things @ UGA before he leaves the school, yes he is not Aaron Murray but he is a good QB. There are decisions that need to be made with the coaching staff, a special team coach is needed and the ol & dl played poorly at times this year.

People forget that when Muschamp was hired at UF he stated that he was always a Gator fan and that he went to UGA because they offered him a scholarship, why do we want him to come back to Athens when he doesn’t really want to be there. why don’t they try to bring back Van Gorder? his defenses were like the junk yard dawg defense under Russell & Dooley. this is what UGA foot ball is about — a defense that will hit, bend but never break and always makes the big play when it is needed.

I wouldn’t disagree with that, at all. It certainly needs fixing again. I’m not convinced Richt can fix what’s wrong with it now. Could he fix it? Sure, will he? yes we have sent more players to the NFL than any other school in the SEC during Richts tenure

And yet our best seasons are 3 or more loss seasons with an occasional 2 loss season and those have been few; weve had only 1 one loss season and that was over a decade ago with Donnans players and a good DC

I dont know where those “had fine winning records” are

I am not a Kool Aider, far from it. I have been very disgusted with Richt’s blunders many a time, and have been verbally reprimanded by true hand sitting Kool Aiders in Sanford Stadium for criticizing Richt. I am not a Murray basher either, and I am grateful for his play at QB for UGA. That being said, I think Mason is the best thing to happen to Georgia in a long time. I am also a realist, and I do think the entire coaching staff will return. What I do believe is that everyone wanted this year to be the year so badly after all the five yards short talk ect., and that the fan base wanted to believe so desperately that the defense would some how be better, even though nine starters were gone. Now the run D was better, much better, but a secondary full of freshman does not bode well in the SEC. I think Grantham will return unless offered a pretty decent NFL job, it would take that to match his current salary, but I also think much improvement coming on D in spite of Grantham. There is much talent in the secondary, and they will absolutely have to learn to stay in position in zone, and learn how to tackle. They do pretty well in man. The secondary coach needs to make them all try to tackle Gurley one on one until they learn how to wrap up. The front seven will be the beasts of the SEC in 2014, and L. Floyd will be close to what Jarvis wasin chasing down QB’s. Added weight will help him tremendously.

There is an article by Seth Emerson where M. Bennett talks about Mason’s no nonsense approach to football, and how he butted heads with Boss Andrews for not being lined up and ready to roll a couple of times versus Kentucky. It looks like Mason may have more leadership qualities than anyone on the coaching staff. One of the most disgusting things I have ever heard come out of a player’s mouth was the comments by Theus about not thinking that Auburn was for real until they hit the field and began kicking Georgia’s OL around. Mason is not going to put up with that kind of foolishness, and I think he will call out players not giving their all. I for one think that is the proper approach to accountability, not promising ice cream for doing their best like a bunch of preschoolers. It appears that Mason will run a faster offense, and it looks like he knows what his options are a little quicker than Murray when he gets the ball. He is taller, and sees the field better, and is able to read the opposition’s defensive aignments quicker. Many experts, includig Phil Steele said that UGA’s chances were going to be much better in 2014 than 2013, but so many in the fan base “wanted” 2013 to be the year. McGarity will demand that the specil teams get fixed, probably will just shift some responsibilities around to achieve improvement. I just think the energy should be spent getting behind Mason and the new Georgia Bulldogs!

Flat Tire – Facts are facts….. Dawgpoop is a TROLL. I can smell a TROLL for miles. Never said you are a TROLL. You have a right to your OPINION. So do I. I do agree with you on some things but getting rid Richt now is not one of them. You know I have said that Grantham was Richt’s 3rd or 4th choice. He has not impressed me so far but there have been extenuating circumstances. Last year several key players on defense were suspended at the beginning of the year and then they had injuries. This year more of the same. I’m willing to give him one last shot in 2014 as his team in 2011 was pretty good and they were in the top 20 in scoring defense last year. This will be Granthams final contract year in 2014 or is it in 2015? I would not extend his contract.

Bobo I would keep – no one’s perfect but he’s a top 5 recruiter and a good OC.

Are seriously going to say Grantham wasnt looking for another job?

“Saban is loyal to Saban” and so Richt isnt loyal to Richt right?

This is where we continue to disagree

2011 The defense underperformed against every ranked opponent except a 5 loss Auburn team that eventually fell out of the AP and coaches poll that year. the scores in those games we lost 35 45 33 and 42 points

That’s what you sound like Flat. Day after day after day. A little spoiled child that doesn’t get his way. You deserve nothing. Arm chair quarterbacking gives you ZERO to say in the processes of the Georgia Football coach. Get over yourself and try a mature approach to the problem

Botton line……our defense blows one as long as a railroad track, and it will not get better as long as CTG is here. Bad teaching, bad system. Get an SEC d-coordinator!

This season has been crazy for sure and I don’t know which team will show up on Saturday… The team that beat LSU or the team that almost let UF beat them.

I like Mason and I like the energy he brings….

If we win this game we are headed to the Gator Bowl and that is big money so McGarity will be on CMR’s ass to win this game. If we end up in the Music City Bowl McGarity ears may pop off.

McGarity is on CMR’s ass to win this game. A win means the Gator Bowl and a loss means the Music City Bowl. That’s why they were in Flowery Branch practicing yesterday. McGarity had it all set up so there would be NO excuses.

What should be posted when the head coach tells everyone “the defense has turned the corner” after playing one of the worst offenses in college football (Florida) and App St who has won only 4 games this year

then gets embarrassed by Auburn

Richt’s strategy to deal with our defensive woes must be to play 4-7 and FCS teams every week. I think it would work if we could just get the schedule lined up right.

Freebird, the southern rock anthem that never ends, geez! Maybe the Redcoat Band did it in jest? Won’t Get Fooled Again blows that song away and would have been more appropriate since Baba O’Riley is always played to begin the game.
