Saturday night’s alright with Todd Gurley, ‘Free Bird’ and Goooooldberg!

Todd Gurley looks to be nearly back at full speed. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Todd Gurley looks to be nearly back at full speed. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more observations from Saturday night’s bittersweet win over Kentucky and a couple of early thoughts on this week’s game against the erstwhile Golden Tornado …

Shaking off the disappointment over the loss for the rest of the season of Aaron Murray, it was impressive enough that 11 different Bulldogs caught passes Saturday night and nine different players ran the ball. But I especially liked it that, besides placekicker Marshall Morgan, six different Dogs scored against the Wildcats: Rhett McGowan, Todd Gurley (twice), Artie Lynch (twice), Hutson Mason, J.J. Green and Brendan Douglas. Gurley seems to be nearly back at full speed, which is the best news the Bulldog offense has had in weeks. …

The awfulness of Kentucky made it a bit difficult to judge just how much improved the Georgia defense was, but they did manage to hold the Cats to 211 yards of offense, and as Todd Grantham pointed out, 69 of those yards came on one run for a touchdown and the final Kentucky drive for a TD was against Bulldog reserves.

Georgia's defense, with Amarlo Herrera, Jordan Jenkins and Ramik Wilson, had its best game of the season. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Georgia's defense, with Amarlo Herrera, Jordan Jenkins and Ramik Wilson, had its best game of the season. (Jason Getz / AJC)

As usual, Ramik Wilson was everywhere, making nine tackles, but I was really glad to see senior Garrison Smith have a big night in his last game Between the Hedges, making seven stops (including three tackles for loss), two sacks and two forced fumbles. And Josh Harvey-Clemons bounced back nicely from his didn’t-bat-it-down moment against Auburn by making five tackles (two for loss) and getting two fumble recoveries, one of which he forced.

On the other hand, let’s hope whoever was out of position on that long running touchdown by the Wildcats gets it figured out this week before facing Georgia Tech, whose triple-option thrives on such errors. …

This is the sort of night it was for the visitors: In the third quarter with the Wildcats facing a fourth-and-2, Georgia’s defense was again late getting its signal and looked completely disorganized (will that situation ever get cleared up?), only to have Kentucky benevolently call timeout. And then, when play resumed, the Cats got called for a false start. So, on fourth-and-7, the Dogs blitzed, the Wildcats fumbled, and Harvey-Clemons recovered the ball. …

Another thing that impressed me Saturday night was Mike Bobo’s aggressive playcalling, especially in the first half. With Georgia taking the ball rather than deferring their choice to the second half for the first time in six opportunities this season when winning the coin toss, the Dogs came out throwing (after getting great field position thanks to a 41-yard kickoff return by Sheldon Dawson), including the big pass to Gurley, who seems to have become Georgia’s most dangerous receiver.

Hutson Mason after replacing an injured Aaron Murray at quarterback. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Hutson Mason after replacing an injured Aaron Murray at quarterback. (Jason Getz / AJC)

And then, when Kentucky had the ball after Murray’s injury, Georgia used its timeouts to save clock late in the first half for another quick scoring drive led by his replacement, Mason. Well done! …

The choice of pre-game honorary captain for the Dogs brought back fond memories of my son’s junior high days as a pro wrasslin’ fan: Bill Goooooldberg!

Several relatively recent former Dogs were on the sideline and were shown on the video screen to applause, with the biggest ovation for A.J. Green, now of the Cincinnati Bengals. …

Just wondering: Could ESPNU have bunched more TV timeouts together in the first half? …

You know the running bit about somebody at a concert always hollering “Play ‘Free Bird,’” no matter who the act is? Well, the Redcoat Band finally did play “Free Bird” in its Southern rock-themed halftime show. And it sounded pretty great. …

One Bulldog did manage to take the field in a black jersey Saturday night: Russ

The fans at Sanford Stadium say it all ... (Jason Getz / AJC)

The fans at Sanford Stadium say it all ... (Jason Getz / AJC)

And kudos to UGA students for their spirit this past week. They not only were the main boosters of the fan Blackout, they also showed up early and, even more impressively, stayed late. With the game well in hand and the scrubs on the field in the fourth quarter, the stands had largely thinned out — but the student section was still packed tight. Go students! …

Looking ahead, I feel pretty good about Georgia’s offensive chances against the Yellow Jackets with Mason at QB. Basically, I feel good about Georgia’s offensive chances against anyone as long as Gurley and Michael Bennett are in the lineup.

My main concerns about the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field (a venue that falls far short of its grandiose appellation) are the defense staying in their gaps and playing assignment football, Grantham calling an aggressive game that disrupts the Tech exchange or pitch in the backfield (where the Jackets have been known to put the ball on the ground a few times) and, most importantly, (let’s all say it together) no special teams mishaps!

We’ll take a closer look at the game with Tech later in the week, but feel free to offer your own thoughts on the upcoming matchup.

Get well soon, Aaron!

Go Dogs! Wreck Tech!

I guess Muschamp and Smart need to start wearing a UGA cap; UGA shirt and red pants and UGA face paint on the sidelines at their current jobs

I think you’re FOS. You can see anything past your distain of Richt and Grantham and that vapid rhetoric you constantly spew. Anything to interrupt that heaven forbid, eh? Muschamp is nothing more than an “okay” coach if he’s that. Look at Texas’s defense when he coached there. He’s lived a charmed life much like Urban Meyer, until; the chickens come home to roost which, HELLO…is now. Foley has prolong the inevitable. Coach Boom exits next year. Florida fans won’t put with him.Look for the “fireBoom.com” to appear anytime.

I’m no big Kirby fan either but, given my druthers I’d take him well before Muschamp. Kirby has done nothing but his job

Yea look at his defense at Texas; yea you’re right it was really bad thats why Foley said lets hire him to Florida where we believe a 3 loss season like UGA is epic

“he’s lived a charmed life” pretty much like Richt at FSU did only to walk in at UGA with at top 10 recruiting class; you might ought to think before you post

I have nothing against Richt; Its comedy hour for me when I read a stupid post like the one you just posted that is continually posted everyday on this blog

UGA had the opportunity to get Muschamp; instead we were more concerned about promoting friends instead advancing the program so save me the turn coat post

Cry me a river. Nobody with the authority or ability at Georgia wanted Muschamp and guess what? They still don’t. If you want him so badly, Florida will take you for a fan.

Boom got the job at Texas from his tenure at Auburn where he actually had a very good defense. How much oif that was Tuberville, I guess we’ll never really know. Again, you can’t get past your hatred for all things Richt to actually view the world as it really is, can you?

Well now there you go attempting to attribute something to me, I didn’t say. Where did I say Muschamp was “really bad”. Quite the opposite. I said he wasn’t a good or great coach and he isn’t. 7-6, 11-2, 4-8 is a good coach in Flat world?

There is nothing to indicate Boom is a good coach. A good DC perhaps and even that is a stretch. You are so very juvenile Flat. You want to dance with every date at the prom except the one you came with. It’s alway better if we “do this” if we “do that”. I will preface that with, on the college level. There is nothing to judge him on but his body on but his body of work. You are crying day in and day out to fire Richt. Now it’s hire Muschamp? LOL….you’re a funny man Flat and a legend in your own mind. Muschamp’s defensive prowess isn’t any better than his head coaching prowess.

I have my personal opinion about him and up until his remarks when taking the FL job, I liked him. Since then, I would water on him if he was on fire. Don’t attempt to justify your remarks on his record or his “works” Neither fare well for you.

Problem I see as long as Richt is here is that he may not be able to get any of the top notch DC to come to Athens. Someone mentioned Manny Diaz the other day, he’s put some good defenses together, some with a whole lot less talent than we have at Georgia. He might be a viable candidate if Richt were interested.

I still stick by my source that says Richt is seriously thinking about leaving next year. If that’s so all probability points to the exact same staff, unless one of them wants to bail and has an offer.

6-7 the program needed fixing. Going 10-3, 11-2, one play away from a NC game. Yes, one can surmise the program is fixed. By contrast Muschamp goes 7-6, 11-2 and apparently 4-8 and Muschamp is a coach to hire. Warped logic there bruddah

Would it be fair to say that the program still needs fixing ARdawg? One could use the word tweak, but I think that’s a stretch. With the inconsistent OL play, the underperformance of our defense, and sporadic play of the special teams, we have a way to go before we become a team. Richt says we win and lose as a team; I have to question that statement.

Where did I say UGA should hire Muschamp as head coach??

2009… 5 losses
2010….7 losses
2011….4 losses
2012….2 losses
2013….4 looses possibly more

In 8 seasons we have had…..

5 seasons of 4 or more losses
1 season of 3 losses
2 two loss seasons

0 SEC championships

Maybe thats fixed at programs like Ole Miss but not UGA

keep drinking your kool-aid

HCMR needs to begin grooming someone to take over as OC, HC jobs will be open for Bobo if he wants to leave. Mason is going to do good things @ UGA before he leaves the school, yes he is not Aaron Murray but he is a good QB. There are decisions that need to be made with the coaching staff, a special team coach is needed and the ol & dl played poorly at times this year.

People forget that when Muschamp was hired at UF he stated that he was always a Gator fan and that he went to UGA because they offered him a scholarship, why do we want him to come back to Athens when he doesn’t really want to be there. why don’t they try to bring back Van Gorder? his defenses were like the junk yard dawg defense under Russell & Dooley. this is what UGA foot ball is about — a defense that will hit, bend but never break and always makes the big play when it is needed.

I wouldn’t disagree with that, at all. It certainly needs fixing again. I’m not convinced Richt can fix what’s wrong with it now. Could he fix it? Sure, will he? Probably not, history keeps repeating itself in that regard. I had hopes at the beginning of the year that it was all fixed and we would/could win every game. It was evident early on that it wasn’t going to be the case and that was before the injuries.

My point?

ok using your comment “superlative at sending our players to the NFL”

yes we have sent more players to the NFL than any other school in the SEC during Richts tenure

And yet our best seasons are 3 or more loss seasons with an occasional 2 loss season and those have been few; weve had only 1 one loss season and that was over a decade ago with Donnans players and a good DC

I dont know where those “had fine winning records” are

but Auburn can muster 2 undefeated seasons with 2 different coaches
FL can win 2 national titles
LSU can win 2 national titles play for 3 with 2 different coaches
AL can win 3 national titles and possibly 4

Real UGA fans think we’re capable of more whiskeybent. We’re bored with Richt. UGA football is on autopilot. Sure, it’s safe and secure. We probably won’t crash. But we’re ready to take it off autopilot and hand the plane over to someone else to see if they can take the plane as high as it can go.

That’s about the best way I can describe it. You Kool Aiders want safety and security. We have balls and want to take some risks to get to the top. That’s really the difference between you and us.

And I should clarify that I don’t think there’s much risk involved at all. A lot of coaches could win 8-10 games a year at UGA and take us to Outback Bowls. It’s not hard. You Kool Aiders like to throw around Tennessee as some cautionary tale but we aren’t Tennessee. Recruiting is 20 times easier for us.

Even if there is risk involved its risk I’m willing to take. I wouldn’t miss all the Outback an Cap One bowls. They aren’t very exciting.

Au-Barn’s “Cinderella” year is about to meet reality. It’s a complete joke that Au-Barn is rated #5 and UGA is not rated. One lucky bounce, a one in a million shot, gave Au-Barn their “W” against UGA.
Au-Barn’s flaws were exposed in the 4th quarter. No pass defense… as long as you block Dee. Pressure Nick Marshall and he folds – so bring the blitz.
