What will it take for 2013 Dawgs to still be considered successful?

Aaron Murray said Georgia finishing with a 9-3 record would be "a great year." Do you agree? (Associated Press)

Last week, after the Missouri game, when the Dogs still had an outside chance at winning the SEC East if they won out and the Tigers lost two, a fellow Bulldog fan and I were discussing various alternative outcomes for the season.

What if Georgia won out, I asked, but didn’t win the SEC East?

The fan said that any season that included wins over South Carolina and LSU (both in the Top 10 at the time) as well as Florida and Tech would have to be considered a really good season.

We revisited that discussion Saturday night after the Vandy game. He said that when he had made the earlier statement, he wasn’t even considering the possibility of the Dawgs losing to the Commodores. His new view? Even with wins over South Carolina, LSU, Florida and Tech, any season that includes a loss to Vanderbilt would have to be considered a disappointment.

OK, I’ll grant that losing to Vandy in the James Franklin era doesn’t carry nearly the shame that it once did, but I can see his point. A great season for the Bulldogs shouldn’t include a loss to any of the teams that normally inhabit the lower half of the SEC East.

Still, you can make a pretty good case that, in a season that’s seen Georgia devastated by a ridiculous string of serious injuries, a 9-3 regular season record and a chance to notch a 10th win in a bowl should be considered a pretty good season.

Shouldn’t it?

Now, let me be clear here: I’m not predicting the Dogs are going to win out; this is my blue sky scenario. I recognize that even an injury-plagued Florida team with the conference’s worst offense is going to be a major challenge. Those games in Jacksonville always are. And, barring vast improvement in the play of the defense and special teams, Auburn right now is looking to be a likely loss.

Georgia no doubt also will play down to Kentucky’s level and make that one tight. And who knows how Todd Grantham’s young charges will react to Tech’s gimmick offense.

But it’s about time the 2013 Dogs got a few breaks going their way, and, if that happens, a 9-3 record wouldn’t be too shabby. As Aaron Murray said this week, “I think we can be proud if we go out there and finish the season strong, go 9-3. Who knows what might happen with Missouri, they still have five very tough conference games to play, who knows what happens. But if not, we’re 9-3 playing in a great bowl game, and 10-3, I think that’d be a great year.”

If the SEC East remains out of reach, what would it take for you to consider the 2013 season a successful one?

Do you agree with him? Can any season when Georgia doesn’t win the SEC East be considered a great year? Or is this season already marked as a disappointment, despite the Dogs having two impressive wins over Top 10 teams? And, if not a great year, what would it take for you to consider the 2013 season a successful one?

I was young, but remember the Lindsay Scott play very well…was actually listening to it on the radio at Tybee. The Dawgs almost had a play like that vs Alabama last year. Murray could be a legend, but it was not to be.

BankerDawg,

1). This year is an anomaly, the injuries are completely to blame for losses to Vandy and Mizz

The injuries have really hurt…you have to admit that in terms of injuries, it is an anomaly.

2). Richt is fully capable and willing to turn things around and will

To say he is fully capable is stretching it I will admit. I missed this.

3). There’s still a chance we can play and win the SECCG this year

There is if SC beats Mizzou and Mizzou loses another SEC game forcing a three way tie should UGA defeat UF, Auburn, Ky. Or easier yet, if Mizzou loses three games…which is not impossible. Like it or not, it is possible.

4). The players are the blame for being ill prepared, not coaching.

The players have to be held accountable to an extent, right?

Each loss this year has hurt me to the core as a Dawg fan, but as I’ve stated on many occasions, I will never completely give up on the season no matter how bleak it looks.

Injuries definitely hurt, no doubt. But the real issue behind the losses is coaching. Let me explain. When you have Gurley, Mitchell, JSW, Conley, and Bennett on the field your basically fielding a Top 5 offense in the nation. Based on what we lost on defense last year, we knew that we were an offensive based team. Fine. I get it. What I don’t get is the other factions that make a complete team – offensive line play (great against SC but that’s about it), the complete chaos on defense, and the special teams debacle. If we know those are glaring issues then why don’t the coaches do something about it? I’ll answer that, they have. They are coaching to the best of their abilities. Their game planning is the best they can come up with. Their in game adjustments are the best they have to offer. The result – losses to a low tier and mid tier SEC team the last two
weeks. My contention is that a solid coaching staff, not masquerading behind 4 and 5 star talent would be able to win those games. That’s harsh, I know, but it is reality. Let me be clear, I never pull for the Dawgs to lose. Hell no. But I’m sick and tired of underachieving.

A Junior, Swain, drops an easy kickoff and the other long snapper proves he needs more practice.
Georgia practices 2 day out of 8 . I think they need more practice not less. I know some are injured and this is a good time for them to heel , but the ones who are making all the mistakes should not get anytime off.
We can’t do anything about the 2 Targeting calls that cost Georgia a win. But, we can do something about very poor execution by our players by not rewarding them with 6 days off.
In six more weeks the entire season will be over. Our last game is November 30TH, unless by miracle we win the East. A bowl game is extremely meaningless if your team has 3 or more losses so whether we end up with only 3 losses or more is immaterial. You get mad not consoling . You prove that you are not as bad as your record shows and you show recruits that we are very close and that having them here will prove a difference next year.

BankerDawg – thanks for the kudos, LOL! Look if you are going to use me as an example at least be accurate when you state things.

1). This year is an anomaly, the injuries are completely to blame for losses to Vandy and Mizz.

Never said that… thanks for the misrepresentation. Typical. The injuries are a large part of it but the defense is more to blame. I have stated that many times and I’ve also said that if we don’t show big improvement over the next 2 games against decidedly weak offenses, that Grantham needs to go. I also said that I would follow along with a torch and pitchfork in my hand as well. Even if they do that, if the defense is again a liability against Auburn…the same hold true.

Just to set the record straight. At least be somewhat honest.

2). Richt is fully capable and willing to turn things around and will

In 2010 we hit bottom. The next year we went to the SEC CG. We followed that with another trip to the SEC CG and damned near won the game. Only people who have unreasonable expectations would not say that is NOT a turn around. Many sports pundits outside the local radio circles recognize it. Why can’t you? Can you say “unreasonable expectations”?

Now, if the scenarios I laid out in #1 come to pass and nothing is done… then it becomes a different issue. If this defense continues to be a liability as it has been without any sort of tangible progress and Grantham isn’t canned then I will be in the doubting Thomas crew as well.

3). There’s still a chance we can play and win the SECCG this year.

I have not said this at all. There is a possibility but there is also a possibility that an asteroid will hit Washington DC as well. We can hope for it but it isn’t bloody likely.

Again, if you are going to attach my name then at least make an attempt to be honest. You didn’t.

4). The players are the blame for being ill prepared, not coaching.

Have you ever trained someone? If you train 3 people and 2 people do it the way you taught it and 1 does not. Who’s fault is that? My children used to try to blame their teachers when they were not doing well in school. It didn’t fly then and it doesn’t fly now.

As you can see above, the defense is coming to the point where what is being taught is going to have to be questioned. But the totally asinine assertion that muffed punts and high snaps are “coaching related” is beyond the pale. Not every mistake on the football field is coaching related. Sorry, it just isn’t. Sometime people just screw up. You do don’t you? I know I do, and I don’t blame anybody. Sometimes it just happens. What is unreasonable about that? Nothing. Expecting perfection is unreasonable.

I seem to remember that the Dawgs blocked a punt against Bama in the SEC CG. I thought well coached teams don’t allow such things to happen? Isn’t that what you all say? But I guess they do, don’t they?

BTW… Mizzou is not a low or even mid tier team. They were crippled up last year and everybody went to sleep on them. They can be a serious pain in the East for a LONG time… so don’t blow them off.

We should have beaten Vandy. Too many mistakes. The only thing I saw that was directly attributable to coaching is our defense’s continued tendency to collapse when the other team gets a head of steam. Their flagging confidence in those situations disturbs me. Being someone that believes heavily in the power of positive thinking I can’t believe that there isn’t some way to build them up so they can withstand that. If they played as confidently in those situations as they do on 1st and 2nd down early in series then we’d see a different defense. But it isn’t happening.

Those mistakes are not correctable like that. They practice and practice and practice. No sometimes you have to to step back. Have you ever reached a point when you were studying for a test when it all ran together? And the only way to straighten it out was to step away for a while? Physical wear and tear increases MENTAL wear and tear. They practiced but the first order of business was to get right physically.

A successful season would be table running rest of season games. And lost fans that forsaken Dawgs rebuild faith with Coach Richt and repent from wishing harm to Dawgs. Bad fans that not supporting Coach Richt and Dawgs is run off. And get players back healthy to get them experienced for next year. Also havings D grow up and show how they know to play when they learns position. And signing new recruits or Hargrave callups to take place a those that wickedly not displaying talents to then play stinkys.

I guess we could blame the players if this season were an “anomaly” but it isn’t. Many players have come and gone through the program and we’ve still seen the same sloppy inconsistent half azzed uninspired play every single year. The one and only constant has been Mark freaking Richt. You Kool Aiders do the math on that and be sure to take Advil for headaches.

A successful season would be watching the D on one play acting like each and every player on the field knew exactly what he was supposed to do. Also, it would entail NOT HAVEING TO LISTEN TO THAT NASTY DRONING that our band plays when the opponent has third down; it usually needs the other team is fixin’ to get a first down!

Vandybilt didn’t beat UGA:

#1) injuries (9 starters out)
#2 refs ( two calls for “targeting” that were actually WRONG calls & led to TWO Vandybilt TD’s)
#3 turnovers – TWO by the “special” teams – a high hike & dropped punt

UGA & the refs GAVE Vandybilt the game.

Is Mizz-who? really that good or did they get fortunate by taking on UGA & the Reptiles decimated by injuries?

Some of both:

Mizz-who? has a decent veteran defense : 5 SR & 4 Jr starters….. and they have excellent WR’s.
Also, they are well coached. They should give Bummer a decent game – barring injuries. Matt Mauk, backup QB, was the #1 QB recruit in the country in his class. Gonna be a star.

I don’t understand why you guys think you should be an Alabama or even an Auburn. Do you remember the 30 years before Richt? You probably blocked it from your memory. This is as good as it’s going to get for you. You might as well just keep screaming SEC, SEC because your biggest achievement in the last 8 years is that you play in the SEC. Your state’s apparent lack of class does not field good sports teams.

*** I was at that Florida game- most of the 6 turnovers were caused by pressure from UGA’s defense. UGA’s defense dominated that game.
I don’t think Vandy’s “great play” caused the center to hike the ball 4 feet over the kickers head… and the punt was just plain dropped by Swann – untouched.

That’s all I need to say about that. Tired of your whining and crying and never giving Dawgs credit when they do something right. TROLLS go HOME!

You guys continue looking at what you want to see. Some of us see deeper than the surface, we see foundational, root cause problems that have plagued this team for years. These are the issues which keep us from getting to the top and staying close. Our coach doesn’t seem to have a process, a system, to keep the program strong. To use a cliché he works harder on trying to put out fires when he should be working on how to prevent them.

I’m not ignoring injuries but I still pin the loss at Vandy on the OL, special teams, defense, and poor play calling. We should have been able to overcome a couple of penalties against Vandy. If we had no injuries we probably win that game, but even with the injuries we should be able to beat the Dores.
