A bad day all-round for Georgia’s Bulldogs

Aaron Murray was just one of numerous Bulldogs who had a bad day Saturday against Vandy. (Associaed Press)

Aaron Murray was just one of numerous Bulldogs who had a bad day Saturday against Vandy. (Associaed Press)

The wheels officially came off a once-promising season for Georgia Saturday in Nashville on a day when the Bulldogs failed in just about every facet of the game.

You know the old saw about it being “a team loss”? This is one game where that isn’t just a way of deflecting blame from one or two players. Just about everyone on both sides of the ball plus the coaching staff was to blame in this devastating loss, which probably eliminated Georgia from any chance for another SEC East title.

Running down the Dogs’ sorry performance against the Commodores, we find a familiar litany of problems:

  • Three more special teams meltdowns — including a allowing a fake field goal to turn into a touchdown, a turnover on a fumbled punt reception, and yet another bad snap that went over the punter’s head — led to Vandy points.
  • Damian Swann had another mostly terrible day, getting burned on long passes and, worst of all, mishandling the fumbled punt. He did have one pass breakup late in the game, but in general the junior cornerback has become a liability whenever he’s on the field.
  • With the Vandy defense exerting constant pressure, the offensive line and Aaron Murray both played poorly, with the Dogs basically having no downfield passing game (the longest Georgia pass play for the day went 17 yards and that was on a screen), receivers dropping too many of Murray’s short passes when they weren’t off-target, and Georgia forced to rely in the end on a freshman back who had a key fumble for the second week in a row.
  • Reverting to the worst excesses of the days when fans were calling for his head, Mike Bobo went all ultra-conservative, culminating in one of his worst third-down calls ever with yet another run up the middle stuffed when the game was on the line. (Georgia was a miserable four out of 14 on third down Saturday.)
  • Once again, the defense couldn’t handle an offense being run by a backup quarterback. Vandy scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
  • On this day the even the officiating went badly against Georgia, with two questionable targeting calls, one of which saw Ray Drew, the Dogs’ best defensive player, ejected from the game in the first half.
  • And in an already injury-plagued season, the final play of the game, which resulted in an interception, saw one of Georgia’s few remaining pass-catching threats, Chris Conley, left crumpled on the field.

Am I forgetting anything that went wrong? Probably. It was that terrible a day for the Bulldogs.

What went right? Well, freshman Shaq Wiggins, who shows signs of being a future star, made a great play by successfully anticipating a screen pass and making an interception in the Vandy backfield that he returned for a touchdown.

And that’s about it for highlights.

So what we end up with is a season that saw two big wins over Top 10 teams and talk of a possible shot at the national championship disintegrating amid too many injuries, a vulnerable young defense that hasn’t gotten any better, and continued ineptitude on special teams.

Looks like Georgia and Florida, which lost to sudden juggernaut Missouri Saturday, might be playing for a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl two weeks from now in Jacksonville.

Let’s see. 1. The ONLY UGA football coach in UGA football history to win two Sugar Bowls. What a chump. 2. Recruited and developed Matt Stafford. 3. Recruited and developed David Greene. 4. Recruited and developed Aaron Murray. 5. Murray sets the SEC record for most total yards, let’s see wait for it….you know it’s coming from the Flat Tire and dawgfan team and their merry band of CMR haters…….”He’s a selfish player, always thinking of me, me, me!” There it is! And that CMR let’s him get away with it. What a chump. If only he could recognize talent.

You and your merry band of minions have been right about predicting all sorts of terrible results. The entire Athletic Department and the entire UGA family thank you for that. And our recruits that we are trying to show the school to in the best possible light thank you for that………..not.

What’s so hard about accurately predicting two or more losses for EVERY team other than Alabama?

Yes Lets see

All that talent you mention and………

Has yet to beat every SEC East team in the same year
Back door our way into every SEC championship game
2 or more loss seasons every year except one
11 Straight years of 2 or more loss seasons
2 SEC championships
0 National Title appearances

Then you had Dooley

1 National title
2 national title appearances
6 one loss seasons
6 SEC championships
Never went more than 7 years without winning the SEC championship

All while never having half the talent Richt has had

Couldn’t agree more with UGA Season Ticket 1986.

Just look at how we played BEFORE all the injuries.
I mean at least we played Clemson tough, only losing by 3 at their place, with all that piped in crowd noise where you can hardly get a play off in time.

No way anybody in the country could win in that atmosphere.

Coach Richt won East more than any other coaching. Gaytors Muschump 0, SCAR 1, Tenn 0, kens tuck 0, vandy Commodes 0. Coach Richt won 5 times in 12 years. Before that we had none wins of East.

Dooley had three years of Herschel. The Greatest College football player in the history of the game. Without Herschel = 0 national championships, 0 national championship appearances, 3 one loss seasons, 3 SEC Championships. Actually, without a penalty for a Florida player kicking Herschel in the head trying to jump over him, you miss out on 1 national championship appearance, 1 one loss season, 1 SEC championship even WITH Herschel. ANY NC is ALWAYS a matter of being great but also luck and getting a call or a fumble or an interception or a fluke play at exactly the right time. That’s why one cannot ever EXPECT a NC. Too many strange things can happen over a season.

Tired of hearing fellow fans blame injuries, officials, cheaters, cheap shots, and other fans for the team’s woes and three losses. Blame is a shallow, useless thing unless you can effect some kind of change and the above EXCUSES are not things we can remedy. The CAUSES of our losses can be foiund entirely in the locker room and coaches’ offices. We CAN CHANGE these things and we should.

Dooley had 3 years of Herschel

LOL

Last year……..

Richt had 7 draft picks on Defense

The Best statistical QB in SEC history

Gurley who if you actually gave him the ball as many times as Herschel got it his freshman year would have had the same yards as Herschel his freshman year

Dooley had Herschel………….

Yep 1 player and Dooley won a National Title and played for 2 with one player

I dont think I would compare a coach that could win a national title with one player against a coach that had way more talent and yet still managed to lose 2 games

Thanks

Until we can effect the changes we need to take us to the NC level, we fans need to lower our expectations to an occasional East division championship and an even more rare SEC championship. These things run in cycles…..we’re just hoping that we are in a down cycle now….and that this is NOT as good as it gets. It is clearly time for a change in leadership.

Forida is in worse shape than we are. Auburn will be a handful if they continue improving. We will finish no worse than 8-4, get into an acceptable bowl, and we should enjoy that. Seriously, life is too short. And when we do get the leadership changes we all want, then we’ll have to endure a couple of adjustment seasons most likely. So, embrace the victories, lament the defeats, use both as a rationale to drink too much, and always enjoy the scenery along the way. Especially cheerleaders with wardrobe malfunctions….did anyone else see that yesterday?

No comeback so you want to claim some anti-Christian rant again

Once again since you seem to have the inability to comprehend anything;

Please tell me where and when; have I ever made any anti-Christian remarks about Richt.

I personally am glad to know Richt is a Christian person and have never made any remarks about his faith

As I have posted on here in the past his faith has had nothing to do with his success at coaching

There have been plenty Super Bowls won from Christian coaches; probably more than non Christian coaches

I dont speak for anyone else but for myself; I frankly dont like when people resort to remarks about his faith; his faith has nothing to do with how the football team is performing on the field

Is that more clear for you?

I think McGarity knows the problems……But all truth be known, This bunch EVEN with the lousy defense would probably be undefeated and ranked in the top 10 if we had no injuries.
